Y'know, Potion Permit is a cute Stardew-like, it's addictive and its NPCs are mostly charming, but I'm really disappointed in what's supposed to be the primary mechanic, which is treating the sick (i.e diagnosing and concocting medications for the respective injury/illness). It involves banal mini games to diagnose illnesses that are generic and random - not rooted at all in the NPC's background like their job or hobbies or lifestyle.
It immediately makes me think of Alfyn in Octopath Traveler who - detached from the player's help and rightfully so because not everyone is a pharmacist (except that I am :') ) - treated NPCs with discernable illnesses and injuries and created and even discussed potions and treatments with some semblance of real life expertise. That's just one aspect of his arc though - he encounters other apothecaries who, like Big Pharma, capitalize on sicknesses they themselves spread/exacerbate, apothecaries who break their oath by choosing their patients based on some ridiculous "moral high ground," and apothecaries he really admires for their sacrifice and work ethic. As a pharmacist, I can say that shit is real.
I guess I was hoping for more of that from Potion Permit, with the added benefit of Sherlocking diagnoses relevant to specific characters, creating potions, and having to adjust based on side effects, drug interactions, comorbidities, etc. That's a big ask, I know lol but with the pandemic, I think there's a lot that can be said about the state of healthcare currently, and hell, that could have been expressed in a hands off approach akin to Alundra treating the very unique nightmares of his fellow townsfolk.

Not sure how many folks played Alundra for PSX. But I was thinking a lot about this and particularly the character Kline. In some senses, Kline feels like a "minor" character -- in the opening-ish chapter when you're meeting all the townsfolk of Inoa, his house is locked and empty -- he's out and unavailable. The next time you see Kline is when you're investigating another one of the town's dilemmas -- a collapse at the coal mine. He says something like, "If you aren't going to do anything about this, then I will." But you are the hero, the protagonist. So you solve it.
The nightmares affecting the people of Inoa represent an out-of-context problem for Kline. While he probably is very experienced with physical dangers, he can do nothing against the horrors of the mind.
So isn't it fitting that later on, when Kline too falls prey to the same malady that is running through the village, that Kline's Nightmare gets its own theme and of course Kline is one of the first to...uhh...have a very different reaction to the nightmare process that the people of Inoa are succumbing to.

Yoshitaka Tamaki, the artist and character designer behind Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Landstalker and many other classic titles, passed away earlier this year, it has been revealed.
Tamaki passed away on July 13th following a battle with lung cancer. He was just 55 years old. A private service was held in his memory today.
Having initially worked as a freelance artist for Enix, Tamaki would join Hiroyuki Takahashi at the newly-formed Climax Entertainment to create Shining in the Darkness on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. While he is most famous for the art and character designs he produced, Tamaki would also contribute to story and scenario writing on several titles he worked on.

As well as working on the Shining series and the seminal action adventure Landstalker, Tamaki would also work on FEDA: The Emblem of Justice (Super Famicom), Lady Stalker (Super Famicom), FEDA Remake!: The Emblem of Justice (Saturn), Alundra (Playstation), Time Stalkers (Dreamcast), Shining Soul (GBA), Shining Soul II (GBA) and Shining Force Neo (PS2). He is also credited on Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon, a GBA remake of the original game.
Back in 2018, fellow Climax / Camelot Software Planning artist Hiroshi Kajiyama, who also worked on the Shining series, passed away.
