A toast, (NOT a roast) to Stevie Wonder. By: Kari Keillor

Ok, this man, is a walking miracle.

I probably don’t have to introduce him to you, if you can see this photo, but for those of you who are like me, and need glasses, or an assistant to read this post, this, is my favorite singer of songs of all time, one Mr. Steven E. Wonder.

Now, you may be saying to yourself, “hey, this nut ball is writing about a guy who doesn’t know her, and could probably give no hoots about her...” but oh, how you would be soooo wrong that the wrongness would sing in your face and peel your eyelashes back from the force of the wrongness. Steven, let’s call him Stevie for short, is a man who has shown so much love to the world and beyond, that he has superseded human limitations. In this piece, I will support my theory.

I now invite you to look at the above photo of Mr. Wonder. (Aptly named, for he is that...) In the photo he is surrounded by not one, not 2, but 7, yes, 7 synthesizers. Or, synclavios. I learned that term on the Cosby show, where Stevie, blind, was driving a car that ended up running into Theo and Denese Huxtable. He was nice enough, to pay for the damages, and their hospital bills no doubt, and invited the family to a sing along at his studio, where he recorded them, being them, and created a song about it. This man, is a very good judge of talent, as the Huxtable family, is full of it. Talent. Yes....

The mom, Clair, was not only a partner in a law firm, and a fabulous mom, but she was gorgeous, spoke fluent Spanish, had the body of a goddess after pushing out 5 kids, had a million friends and associates, and just also happened to be, a fantastic singer. She makes me sick, in a great way, because she inspired me as a kid, and showed me that I can do a multitude of things if I wanted to in this life. Did I do any of the things she did? Not many. But! I do know how to say, “Hola. Che tal.” Which is pretty ok. And she is fierce, and I am too. And Clair would not be who she is without the lovely and talented Phylicia Rashad. She’s amazing...

Now, back to Stevie.... in the above paragraph I casually mentioned that he was driving. Stevie is seeing impaired, and the man drives a car, because he’s that incredible. Here’s proof just recently, of Stevie driving a Tesla. (See below)

Note the steering wheel. Driving. Yes. Ok, so he had some help. Stevie is a creator of music, yes, but more importantly Stevie is a creator of love. And not just a little love. A whole lotta love, like Led Zeppelin, only no, because they are not him, they are them. Stevie emanates love out of every pour of his body, and in this case, that love has become so great, that it became his copilot, because needs one, because can’t make things happen on his own in this case. Stevie is like all of us in that regard. His copilot, in this case an autopilot, is there to guide him along his way.

And yes, there are other people in the car with him, helping and supporting. We need those people in life to co-create with, and to do more than we ever thought possible. They are, no doubt, also loving in their own right, and also brave, and a lil adventurous too. And no, the man sitting shot gun, is not who I’m referring to as stevie’s co-pilot. But I’m sure he’s cool as well, much like the lady in the back seat. Probably way cooler, than I would be, in that situation. 🙈🤷‍♀️😉 Stevie’s elation from driving was so intense, that it literally punched me in the face, and forced me to write about it. Now that’s some powerful stuff. 🥊 💕😆

On a more general note, Stevie is the creator of so much love it’ll make your head blow off and then, since he’s kind, he’ll help you figure out your feelings to get it back on straight again. But he doesn’t do it alone. He decided, when he was very young, to listen to that very wise co-pilot, who, incidentally, has been co-piloting with Stevie for years. It’s the connection that we all share, but Stevie happens to be better at listening and co-creating with it, then I am. I’m the type of driver, that yells when someone cuts me off, or tries to cross the street while I’m trying to blow the red light. But when my co-pilot kindly reminds me, that maybe that’s not the way to go, I yell at my co-pilot, and tell them all kinds of things I won’t repeat here. But Stevie, isn’t that way. He listens, he feels, and then he co-creates the best vibrational energy through his music and his voice, ever. And for that, we all should be appreciative, and a ton of us are.

Now, I have wondered, much like Stevie has but not, since he is the wonder that I wonder about, since he can do so many miraculous things, if he can also, bake. And yes, he can do that too. (See below)

I’m not sure who Hollie & Craig are, but they were the luckiest recipients ever of this message of happiness because they were born, and also, of this delicious looking cake, that I am envious of. Yes, I ended that sentence in a preposition. And I am, yes, I’m tired of apologizing for my shortcomings. I do it a lot. And Stevie, doesn’t. He takes his life, and rocks it. This man, is not only a musical genius, but he is an inspiration to me, for being me, fully and completely, and not being afraid to try new things, or apologizing for being myself. He’s taught mecthrough example to go beyond my mental limitations, and to become more than I ever thought I could be. I decided to embrace my co-pilot too. Not while I’m driving, because dangerous, but after I get out of the car. I decided, to take love’s advice, and try to create a more complete and fuller me, with education from people like Stevie, that shows us that loving others, and being loving to yourself, is the way to fully realize true happiness.

Laughing helps too. It’s a choice to experience the lighter side of life. Part of life is being open to receiving love from perfect strangers, not the short lived wackaschmoo sitcom from the 80s, although that had its charm, but from people all over the world who, like Stevie, are willing to share the love in the way that they do, and by appreciating and focusing on that, and not the other stuff. Because the other stuff, isn’t love.

People can be cruel sometimes, due to their harsh judgements and beliefs, and their subsequent choice to not allow themselves to fully recognize and experience the love that surrounds them in themselves and in others. I’ve experienced both sides of that coin, and both feel, quite frankly, lousy. Sight, is not the issue. Love, and the lack of it, is. But, I rib with love and admiration for Stevie. I honestly believe that Stevie can see more than most people, because of his choice to love, and to feel love, and to embody the love, and most importantly, to share the love that he creates with the world.

Focusing on feeling good, immersing yourself in positive thoughts and energy, encourages more of the same in return. You become the very thing you entertain internally. And Stevie, entertains Wonder. He is one of many lights that helps us see that we are all love, on the inside.

Be the miracle, that you are. And yes, just in case you were “Wonder”ing, I am the “master blaster, of appreciation. Happy belated birthday to yah, Stevie the WONDER-FUL . Thanks for your birthday gift to us... the love! 😉💕

What is your favorite thing to do on your phone? Fucking around on social media like a true Gen Z-er would, lmao. I have several games that I’d play occasionally, but most of the time I just check the same three apps – Messenger, Facebook, and Twitter. Do you know what you are going to be for Halloween this year? If so, what? I don’t even know if I have plans for the rest of the year. Do you still go trick-or-treating, and if so, how old are you? The last time we did was 2015, when we were 17. Nowadays we just have costume parties. Which Disney princess resembles you the most? At the moment it’s probably Moana, but I heard they’re making a Southeast Asian Disney princess so I’m waiting for her :) What color was your first phone? I’m not sure what the model’s actual color was because it was already in a Winnie the Pooh case when I got it as a present, but the case itself was red.

Was your first phone a flip phone? No, it was one of the Nokia ones with a slightly green screen and the Snake game on it. Have you ever butt dialed someone? I don’t think so. It’s normally the other way around. What is your favorite pizza parlor? We don’t have many of that around here; most places serve a little bit of everything with pizzas usually having its own section on the menu. That said, my favorite place to get pizza is Mama Lou’s if I have some cash on me and want to be fancy, and Yellow Cab if I want fast food pizza but still quality pizza. What is an old website that closed down that you miss? I’m pretty sure Tumblr shut down my old survey blog, the one I’ve had since 2012 or 2013, and I’m very bummed out by it. It’s also weird to me because I have a blog that’s been inactive for much longer and that one is still up... so I don’t know why they would shut down the blog that served as my journal during my teen years. I occasionally look back on it to see how I was doing then and compare it to who I am now, so it sucks that I can’t do that anymore. If you're a girl, have you ever had an embarrassing period story? I guess, but I’ve also reached a point where I’ve stopped seeing period mishaps as embarrassing. Juke Box Hero by Foreigner is also a song I have been listening to near non-stop lately, it just... moves me, pulls at my soul, like I feel it so fervently I cannot sit still!  And also I can very easily see one Billy Hargrove in it.

Vienna by Ben Platt, wonderful piano and his vocal chords are to die for, and the song itself; the lyrics they’re so... reassuring to me, “Vienna waits for you”? Like everything’s going to be ok in the end I know the song is originally by Billy Joel and has an actual backstory to it that is very fascinating in of itself

And lastly I’ll suggest to you A Place With No Name by Michael Jackson, purely because it’s groovy, like I can dance to this!! Not very well, mind you, but there are two critical parts to a song for me: How worthy it is to dance to, and how good it is to sing along to.

You’re very classic by nature and that’s something that initially draws Bucky to you. Mostly because it’s messing with his head as he gets flashbacks to glimpses through the decades he lost to Hydra. He doesn’t remember much of it, but being around you gave him the feeling he might be able to get back what he lost.

You were scared of him at first, and a little shy. You saw enough news coverage of him to know he was bad news. Bucky saw the idea of getting close to you as attoning for what he did. If he could change you perception on him then maybe he wasn’t that bad after all and maybe the man he was forced to be wasn’t really him. He kept “randomly” bumping into you and trying to strike up conversations even through you were nervous at first, eventually you grew used to it and realized maybe he was a victim of it all.

The two of you spend a lot of time outdoors doing various stuff. You enjoy the outdoors and Bucky likes being away from the city and all the noise. It’s an oasis when you guys manage to be out and away from civilization. Stuff like canoeing or rock climbing just puts both of you in a good state of mind.

You’re always on the move trying to do stuff and start new activities and sometimes Bucky struggles to keep up. But he enjoys that quick energy you give off of. His body naturally wants to be lazy but he is much happier when he does get to do stuff so being with you is exciting.

He’s really over protective of you, perhaps a little possessive at times too. He’s had people he loves taken away from him and it’s hard to imagine a world where you’re not in it. You think it’s cute sometimes and annoying other times but you get where he’s coming from and sometimes just let him do what makes him feel safer. Plus it’s kind of hot sometimes.

You have to deal with the occasional person realizing who he is and freaking out in fear. He isn’t that recognizable on the streets but some people still have memories from the time he was.

There was a knock at the door at 10 o’clock at night. This was pretty rare considering that neither of you had any close friends who randomly came over. Steve sometimes but Steve tended to walk right in when he arrived, so something about this was wrong.

Bucky’s arms were wrapped around you as the two of you watched a movie. This was meant to be a nice cuddling session although it was suddenly pulled apart by the knocking. Bucky tensed up immediately, “I’ll get it.” He said, knowing you tended to be shy around strangers.

He headed over to the door and opened it, “Hello?” On the other end appeared to be some nerdy sales rep trying to the two of you to buy a subscription. Who tries to tell stuff at 10 o’cock at night? “We don’t want any—“ he started but was soon cut off by the sound of glass breaking in the other room.

When Bucky turned back the sales rep punched him in the face. He hardly reacted to it as he used hs arm to shove him back hard enough to crack the hallway wall. He soon rushed into the living room to find you being held against your will, a gun to your head.

Bucky started walking over but was stalled when the man spoke up, “uh uh. Take another step closer and I’ll kill her.” Bucky knew better than to just suddenly risk your life. You were one of the few good things he had left in it.

“What do you want.”

You somehow managed to stay silent, afraid of dying but also afraid of Bucky getting hurt. There was few options here and while you trusted him you weren’t sure if anyone could easily get out of this. But you did have something that could help, if only the man would make a mistake.

“I can’t you too—“ the man was cut off as you realized your perfect shot was upon you, you elbowed him hard and he doubled over. You weren’t exactly helpless but he hadn’t given any previous openings. He released you as a reflex and you dove to the side to evade him.

Bucky instantly moved in and knocked him out wirh one quick punch as the man flew across the room and you ran to his arms. “I’m so sorey, I wasn’t paying attention and—“ you began to apologize quickly but he held you tight and shushed you softly.

“It’s my fault too alright, we got too comfortable.” But there was a bigger unspoken problem. That someone wanted him and knew exactly where he lived. “We should head somewhere else for now, those men won’t stay down forever.”

You nodded your head and moved to get ready. “You already know I’m willing to follow you wherever you go. Just lead the way.”

STRANGER THINGS

Jim Hopper

You’re wardrobe fits right in with the era, given that it’s the 70s to early 80s. But you’re appreciation for the early seventies starts to feel really nostalgic for him, especially cause it keeps him centered in a world that just keeps changing drastically at every turn.

At first you thought all the traps around his house were a little excessive but you soon realized he was just extremely prepared, and that his paranoia was justified. You actually learned to get really into helping him eith that, enjoying how they made you think and enjoying being out in the woods.

When he first met you it was for an interrogation. He thought you may have had something to do with a recent disappearance of a missing boy, although that was before he learned the darker truth. You were so shy that he thought you were hiding something. So he changed tactics to get closer in hopes you’d lower your guard.

Needless to say you were pissed when you realized he only got close to you for his case. He owned up to it all when he realized that you had nothing to do with it, and especially when he learned about the monsters. You thought it was less reassuring, and you stormed off. That was how you first encountered the supernatural.

You became El’s advocate. You supported her wanting some freedom and felt bad that she was cooped up for so long, especially since you knew that you could never handle sitting still for as long as she had to.

You both have similar taste in music and love driving down the road jamming out to classic rock, or at the time just rock. You’d go on long drives to take a weekend getaway off in another cabin by a lake. Sometimes to help ease the tension of the real danger back in town.

“Dance with me!” You said suddenly. You had been holed up in the house for several days and there was only so many puzzles, games, and television that could occupy you. So you turned up the radio and started poorly your dancing your way to Hopper.

He felt bad that he couldn’t do more for your right now. But he was under heavy surveillance and going outside at the moment was a recipe for disaster. He just wished you didn’t have to get stuck with him. “Oh I don’t know.” He rested his head to the side. “Dancing isn’t really my thing,” he admitted.

“Please! It’s the least you can do.” Once you flashed your puppy dog eyes at him, Hopper knew it was over. You grabbed his hands and pulled him to his feet as you started to dance to the rhythm, forcing him along with you.

As he started to get into it you let go and began to move in bouncing circles to the rock song, letting your hair have it’s fun as you went wild enjoying the moment. Hopper never quite got on your level as his dancing slowly came to a stop. He was mesmerized by the way your body moved to the song. How free you managed to be even here.

Soon you stopped as you realized he wasn’t playing along. “Whats wrong?” You were panting and a little out of breath due to your intensity. You brushed your hair to the side and just behind your ear to see him better.

“You just— well you’re breath taking.” Hopper smiles at you, finally releasing a breath he just realized he was holding. “Besides, you’re a lot quicker than me.” He then chuckled.

Your face flushed red in response and you felt he place heat up. “Well you have that affect on me too.” You confessed.

Just then, a snapping sound was heard outside in the woods. A trap was just set off and something was caught. Animal? Human? Who knows, but it meant that you guys had to find out and more importantly that you got to go outside!

“We caught something!”

Top 10 Albums of 2018 (So Far. . . )

Ok, so I’ve decided I’m not going to do a top 10 singles list just because it’s too hard to cull it down, so I’m finishing albums and then going to write up Odette - To A Stranger review. This list is from albums between January and the end of June, so anything released last week isn’t included. This took me a while to cut to 10 and there’s a couple of albums that were late inclusions from albums I didn’t expect to like so much until last weekend. To be honest, this year has been kinda of average for albums, with most albums being in the B- to B+ range and only a couple reaching into the A’s. At the same time, a lot of the releases which were anticipated for me have still been enjoyable. Anyway, here’s the list.

10. Pusha T - Daytona (US)

I’ll be honest when I say I haven’t always been a fan of Pusha T, mainly because I’ve never got into the timbre of his voice. On Daytona though, his flaws (almost) disappear, delivering a short but brilliant album. The touch of Kanye (you’ll be hearing a lot of him on this list) in the production is obvious, with Pusha’s voice being moulded around strong instrumentation. Lyrically is where the album finds its success though, Pusha T. flexing his ability with the pen and delivering those words with confidence.

9. Gorillaz - The Now Now (UK)

Squeezing just into the cut-off date, the sixth album by cartoon band, Gorillaz, is exactly what the year needed. Relaxed, low-key and contained, especially compared to last years saturated Humanz, The Now Now sees Damon Albarn bring his side-project back under his control, allowing his voice to balance delicately over dreamy synth instrumentals. Although the album does feel a bit like fan service, especially after the complaints surrounding Humanz not having enough 2-D vocals, Albarn is able to utilise his voice to create the bands most soothing album yet.

8. Ocean Alley - Chiaroscuro (AUS)

From when I first listened to Chiaroscuro to now, I can say that the album has grown on me a lot. Ocean Alley have seemed to really layered a lot of brilliant moments on this album, often very subtly. Baden Donegal’s voice is a pleasure to listen to, his development as a lyricist and vocalist fully on show on this release. I was really unsure where Ocean Alley would go last year, ‘The Comedown’ being a track which suggest great but different things were coming up. Chiaroscuro sees them evolve as a band whilst also redefining their dub and reggae influences, becoming on of Australia’s best releases this year.

7. The Presets - Hi Viz (AUS)

And with the filthiest album of the year. . . The Presets seemed to be going in an opposite direction when they released Pacifica back in 2012. After popping up at nearly every festival in Australia since, their return to albums with Hi Viz is nothing short of exciting. And with this album they go completely batshit crazy, and it works. With big choruses, heavy instrumentation and a couple of good features, they release their best album in a decade and return to the top of the Australian dance scene.

6. Hockey Dad - Blend Inn (AUS)

Hockey Dad’s rise in the Australian music scene over the last few years has been nothing short of exciting. From their humble beginnings, Blend Inn combines all their influences and builds on what their debut Boronia started. Zach Stephenson’s vocals are crisp and he writes some of the best melodies of his career, whilst their music has become thicker, louder and better. The band fully explores their influences, with shoegaze, grunge, pub-rock, and surf-rock all being on show. Blend Inn suggests they are going to be bigger and better and the product definitely proves this.

5. Kamasi Washington - Heaven and Earth (US)

I’m not too familiar with Kamasi Washington’s work, mainly because I’ve never been a Jazz man. The only album I’ve heard was 2015′s The Epic, which I came too late and was really impressed. Despite this, I am familiar with his collaborations, with Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat and Flying Lotus being among the names I’ve heard him collaborate with. So this is why Heaven & Earth stunned me so much. The two and a half hour, two sided album is just a wondrous piece of music, combining Jazz, Blues, Soul, Funk and Neo music with political undertones. The saxophonist isn’t someone I normally end up listening to, as I said, I’m not a Jazz man. Heaven & Earth though is great and I can’t deny a great album when I hear it. Definitely my biggest and most pleasant musical surprise this year.

Favourite track: ‘Street Fighter Mas’

4. Kanye West - Ye (US)

Ye is the oddball of the Kanye discography. Like all of the other recent G.O.O.D Music, it’s seven tracks, and that both is an advantage and a disadvantage. The disadvantage though is just that it’s so short. It’s advantage is that there is no filler, all seven tracks being at least good. It also has some of Kanye’s best phrasings, especially in tracks like ‘I Thought About Killing You’, ‘Wouldn’t Leave’, and ‘Violent Crimes’. Like all of the recent releases though, the production is where the album succeeds. ‘Ghost Town’ is flawless when it comes to the instrumental and all throughout the album, it’s hard to go past how good the mixing and instrumentals are. It may not be Kanye’s best, but it continues the consistency of his discography.

3. DMA’s - For Now (AUS)

It was always going to be hard to top Hill’s End, DMA’s brilliant 2016 debut. The singles weren’t spectacular and a sophomore slump wouldn’t have been too surprising. For Now exceeded all expectations though. With a more 80s feel to it, the three piece have crafted another solid, Brit-pop inspired release. The instrumentals are thicker, with synths added to a few tracks, and the vocals and lyrics have improved, Tommy O’Dell really letting his voice shine. For Now might not have as many big moments as Hill’s End, but it’s a more consistent and mature release for the Newtown three piece.

2. Lily Allen - No Shame (UK)

I remember sitting around one June 8th, just after midnight, checking to see if an album (soon to be mentioned) was released yet, only to see Lily Allen sitting there. I remembered the lead single ‘Trigger Bang’ (featuring Giggs) was pretty good and I frothed Lily Allen’s 2009 album It’s Not Me, It’s You when I was younger, so I checked it out. I wasn’t ready for the level of depth that the album reached, especially considering I always thought of her as this sarcastic, cynic that just ripped on anything popular. No Shame contains some of her best material, and definitely her most personal, with songs like ‘Family Man’, ‘Three’, and ‘Apples’ criticising her role as a wife, mother and person. The production is brilliant as well, with a rich, pop, sometimes dancehall soundscape which gives her voice a chance to shine, delivering her best vocal performances of her career. Although Allen does sound broken (despite the positive latter tracks), she also sounds better than ever.

1. Kids See Ghosts - Kids See Ghosts (US)

This was the album I was waiting for on June 8th. To say I didn’t have very high expectations would be badly lying. A Kanye/Cudi album has been something I always wanted to hear but never thought I would, with the two artists collaborating many times since 2008′s ‘Welcome to Heartbreak’ (off Kanye’s fourth album 808s & Heartbreak). The album didn’t disappoint either. Rich with beautiful production, especially on tracks like ‘4th Dimension’ and ‘Reborn’, and some of Kanye’s and Cudi’s finest lyrical moments, Kids See Ghosts was such a pleasure to listen to. With a lot of themes detailing personal demons, both artists discussing their own mental illnesses and setbacks in their career, the album is surprisingly energetic and upbeat. At times, especially on ‘Freeeee (Ghost Town Pt.2)’ and ‘Reborn’, it’s celebrating both artist’s ability to survive and defeat their demons, and despite the darker two tracks at the end, ‘Kids See Ghosts’ and ‘Cudi Montage’, there is still this sense of rejoice and victory. From the insane “Grrrat-gat-gat-gat-gat-gat”, to Cudi’s infectious humming in the chorus of ‘Cudi Montage’, the album has a bit of everything, not only becoming one of both’s best albums, but also my number one album of the year so far.
