Cláudia Varejão, 2016 Portugal/Switzerland Japanese with English subtitles 113 minutes

Cláudia Varejão’s intimate documentary focuses on women living in a small town off of Japan’s Shima Peninsula who have carried on the 2,000-year-old tradition of diving for pearls, sea urchins, and abalone. Challenging notions of how Japanese females are supposed to behave, the Ama (“sea women”) dive without scuba gear or oxygen tanks, wearing minimal protection. Like the Ama probing the ocean’s depths, Varejão’s camera examines the minutiae of the women’s day-to-day existence: their hair curlers, the sea salt clinging to their skin, and assorted daily feminine tasks that are all too often taken for granted. Between the early cancellation of Discovery, Seven/Raffi and Mariner/Jenn being erased in their respective shows, and SNW having queer coded characters but not confirming anything on screen, I'm really afraid that we're entering another "No Gays in Trek" era.

For those who don't know, 90s era star trek featured so few queer characters b/c Rick Berman largely held a policy of not wanting any homosexuality in his shows. And yes, we all remember the handful of episodes that slipped through that addressed it but the fact remains that there were no canonically queer main cast members before Into Darkness in 2016 gave us a five second shot that could be cut when whoever was showing the movie found the idea of two men in a loving relationship disgusting.

Then we got Discovery with multiple queer characters that allowed people to feel seen. And people never stopped bitching about them. The amount of times that I've had to listen to people complain that Adira's only character trait is that they're non-binary despite that literally being a single thirty second scene and never brought up again makes me understand that they very likely don't want to like the queer characters in that show. And it's not that there aren't criticisms to be made about the queer representation in Disco: Discovery Buries it's Gays before the end of the first season. Making your trans characters aliens who already have a history of gender fuckery is problematic b/c it somewhat plays into the idea that queerness is unnatural for human beings. But I never hear those complaints. Only the pronouns. Only the "We get it you're gay but don't shove it down our throats." But I don't want to get too off topic.

Now Discovery is being canceled early. And by early I mean, the writers weren't given proper notice that their show was ending. They were halfway through production and allowed to adjust the end episodes of the season to try to give a satisfying ending.

In Picard and Lower Decks, we got two sapphic relationships ("sapphic" meaning a romantic or sexual relationship between two women who aren't necessarily strictly lesbians) and they were pretty good. People had been asking for Seven to be queer and Jeri Ryan had been playing her as such since her introduction (see again: Rick Berman) and to see her finally get to express that was really healing. Mariner got off to rocky feet when the creators tried to pull a "Dumbledore is gay" where they said she was bi but didn't commit to it, but they she actually got a fairly satisfying relationship in season 3.

But in their most recent seasons, both were completely written out. Seven/Raffi gave us no explanation beyond that they "broke up." They went out of their way to keep them from being on screen together for most of the season. Mattis said in a Reddit AMA that he wanted Seven to be captain and Raffi to be first officer at the end of the season and that Starfleet would have regulations against relationships between the two despite the biggest reason Seven was promoted to captain was that she was a rule breaker. We didn't even get that much for Mariner/Jennifer. Jenn just wasn't in this season except for two background appearances.

And in Strange New Worlds there's just… nothing. SNW is the most recent new show and there's no queer representation. They code Ortegas as gay but don't actually confirm it on screen. There's just… nothing.

And this is how you loose the culture war. The bigots make enough noise that the show that is supposed to be a beacon of diversity doesn't necessarily side with them but they just kinda bow out of the conversation. They decide that it's easier to not bother than to take a stand. And so I and many many queer star trek fans are left wondering:

Does the franchise even want us any more?

Weird thing I’ve noticed:

Rachel seems to be deathly afraid of giving her characters facial hair- even tho that was like, a staple for a lot of male Greek gods and deities

Well, except for the “unattractive” ones

In Rachel's defense on that one, I can attest that it's difficult to give these characters facial hair when they're all painted neon colors LMAO like, I LOOOOVE drawing facial hair, but even I haven't really bothered giving the male cast facial hair because they're so ethereal/non-human looking that if you gave them something like a mustache or beard, it would start to tip them more towards the 'human' look and it could clash with the colors and enter uncanny valley territory. Like, the characters would either have to have full stylized cartoon beards-

-or nothing at all.

(that's how I get away with it with Dionysus, because his beard is basically just a big 'ole berry bush, so it's able to color match his face and not be distracting with its stylization).

That said, I've seen some great edits of LO panels where characters have facial hair, so that's not to say it can't be done! I just don't know if it's something that Rachel is capable of doing.

Because straight up, Rachel also just doesn't know how to draw men. Or rather, she only knows how to draw one type of man. Most of her portfolio pre-LO consists of drawings of women, many sharing the same body types (though there are some variations around 2010-2014). And just like with the women, when she does draw men, they've all got the same facial structures and body types:

Like, you've got 6 guys here, six, and not a single one of them has facial hair or any extremely varied hairstyle. Half of them look like Hades. I get the sense that Rachel basically learned how to draw one "type" of male and one "type" of female and has just been drawing from those same templates ever since while swapping out minor details like nose shape and hair type.

Like, that's just a guy from The Doctor Pepper Show. He looks like a mix of Donovan and Shifty Ricky LMAO And it's not like she doesn't have mortals in LO either who aren't colored with highlighter marker, but I don't think she ever really gives them beards either. The only guy I can think of off the top of my head is Psyche's *future husband:

And that has the exact kind of stylization/structure that I was talking about before that Rachel would likely have to do if she gave the gods facial hair to keep it from looking silly. Case in point, that time Hermes grew a mustache:

All that said, I do think it's a combination of Rachel not knowing how to draw men (she's even admitted in past AMA's and interviews that she's bad at drawing men and that doesn't seem like something she's tried to improve judging by how the men look in LO) and LO's art style just not mixing well with more human features like beards and body hair. It could wind up looking like a Barbie doll with marker scribbled on it LMAO

regarding to the question about km’s sexualities. i’d like to share my opinion, if you are not against it, i just wanted to rant, and its totally okay if you are not gonna post this, i just had to get it off of my chest yk, haha

so, imo, jimin is bi and he was silently screaming about it since 2015-2016, and his photofolio is a tiny coming out. but, i think he is a bi with male preference? like yeah, he CAN fall in love with woman, but he prefers men more (especially one particular man). and yeah, there are a lot of bi people craving for “normalcy”, so they try to choose the safest option — opposite sex partner, but. if you are head over heels and madly in love with someone already (which is jimins situation with jungkook, i assume) you won’t change the love of your life for a safety. it reminds me of how troye sivan said “gave up heaven so we could be together” tbh, because i think jimin is willing to take a risk just to be with jungkook and spend his life with him

and if we come to jungkook, then i’m pretty sure he is gay. i told that to a lot of people and usually they say shit like “have you SEEN jungkook?” or “his ideal type is iu”, like how dumb can people be..? first of all, his looks has nothing to do with his sexuality. he can wear black and be gay, or wear pink and be straight. “iu ideal type” thing is just so funny, when we are literally talking about a man, who described his ideal type as someone with muscles. (and correct me if im wrong, but jungkook said that when jimin was all big with muscles, and when jm became more pale, cute and wasn’t into that “masculine looks”, jungkook said his type is someone who is cute, even without an aegyo and some other stuff that literally screamed “jimin is my type”. isn’t this a lil sus, lmao).

and i’m not saying that they are queer just because i’m a jikooker and i’m sure that they have a thing with each other, but because they both have beated straight allegations yeaars ago.

so yeah, in conclusion: jikook are queer and they are the loves of each other’s lives, thanks for coming to my ted talk!!

I don't know where songs like Fool's gold fits in with songs from 1989. Say don't go especially make it seem like HS was the one that couldn't commit and she was wanting forever. It seemed like she wanted commitment early or did I miss something?

Taylor worked on Red and 1989 for much longer than the One Direction albums, she put out 2 in the time they put out 3. So although 1989 and Four came out close together (and do overlap) 1989 started earlier and Four was finished later.

Say Don't Go was written and recorded on New Years Day 2014. Harry was skiing with Kendall at the time.

Clean and Style were written in February, with Style the last song for 1989. They then seemed to be dating from Valentine's Day 2014. Stockholm Syndrome on Four was written soon after Style while they were together. He also wrote I love you for Alex and Sierra then, so Say Don't Go was definitely resolved.

by September, in the lead up to 1989's release Taylor started doing media that minimised the relationship. In particular on 8 September 2014 this Rolling Stone interview and on 11 September 2014 this '22 things I learned from Taylor' with this quote:

“I think the way I used to approach relationships was very idealistic,” she says. “I used to go into them thinking, ‘Maybe this is the one — we’ll get married and have a family, this could be forever.’ Whereas now I go in thinking, ‘How long do we have on the clock — before something comes along and puts a wrench in it, or your publicist calls and says this isn’t a good idea?'”

Fools Gold was seemingly written a few days later on 14 September. 💔 They were seen together again around the AMAs and VS show (So It Goes), but it was properly over by around 6 January 2015.

Things seemed OK in June, August 2014 - They were both MIA for the week that article came out and both went from LA to London. Then his Insta went black and white until 2016 except when they were in the same place.

That they maybe ended whatever happened in 2023 before 1989 TV was released is not lost on me.

I think it was hard but fun to be back as creative director for this album. Stress is among the things I ignore. Let's try and meditate. BABY: How did you feel when you were filming for NUMB? I'm afraid of heights. Seeing you near the edge of the cliff scared me 😅 I think NUMB will be my favorite ❤️

Ailem o parayı güzel bi yemek yemem için vermişti, ısrarla "mutlaka İskender ye" gibi bi baskı yapılmıştı. He tm deyip geçmiştim çünkü ben oraya kitap almaya gidiyordum. Ailem ısrarla çok kitap almamam gerektiğini, beni gezmeye yolladıklarını söylemişlerdi. Paramız pek yok diye böyle dediklerini biliyorum ama parası olmayan evladı ısrarla pahalı(?) bi şeyler yemeye teşvik edip kitap almaktan uzaklaştırmak baya tatsız bi davranış bence. Ben he deyip geçtikten sonra tüm paramla kitap almıştım (yüz liraya on iki kitap alabilmiştim...) Arkadaşlarımla acıkınca ucuz bi kafe aramaya başladık ama açlıktan gözümüz çok fena dönmüştü. Sürüne sürüne yolda giderken bim bulunca sandviç ekmeği ve üçgen peynir ve le kola aldık. Bizi doyurabilecek ve en ucuz seçenek buydu, çeşitli şeylerin fiyatlarına bakarak buna kadar vermiştik. Marketten çıkınca bi apartmanın girişindeki merdivenlere çöküp aldıklarımızı yemeye başladık. Gözü dönmeyen arkadaşım yaptığımız şeyin rezalet ve çok saçma olduğundan yakınsa da ben çok keyifliydim. Tabii istediğim kitapları almanın verdiği mutluluk da vardı. O gün iskender yesek eminim ki o kadar keyif alamazdım. Eve döndüğümde herkes uyuyordu ve ben kitaplarımı yattığım kanepenin altına yerleştirdim. Aileme de tüm paramla kitap aldığımı söylemedim. Haftalar içinde yavaş yavaş çıkartıp kitaplığa yerleştiriyordum kitapları fark edilmesin diye. Arada öğlen yemeği yemeyip ve toplu taşımaya para vermeyip kitap aldığımı bildikleri için yeni kitapları öyle geliyor sanıyorlardı ve bunu da onaylamasalar da çok bir şey diyemiyorlardı. Yıllar sonra bu yaptığımı anlattığımda çok gülmüşlerdi ama aslında baya tatsız bi durum bence. Bi gencin kitap alması bile bu kadar baskılanıyorsa nasıl kendi olabilir, nasıl ilgi alanlarına rahatça değer verebilir ve bu konuda çalışabilir? Hele şimdi bir kitabın yüz lira tuttuğunu düşünürsek liseli çocuklar ne yapıyor, nasıl yaşıyor, en azından pdfleri rahat bulabiliyorlar mı diye merak ediyorum, endişeleniyorum. Bir de param olsaydı pek çok açıdan çok daha farklı bir insan olabilirdim düşüncesi içimi kemiriyor

Bugün tesettürü hayatıma katalı 7 yıl olmuş.

2016 yılının Ramazan ayının 27'nci gününde örtünmüştüm, 1 Temmuz Cuma gününe denk geliyordu ama her Ramazan ayında o yıl Kadir hangi güne denk geliyorsa o gün kutluyorum.

Öyle sabah uyanmıştım, ilk tesettür kıyafetlerimi giyip dışarıya çıkmıştım. Rahat, özgür ve mutlu hissediyordum. O günkü o his karmaşasını hep hatırlarım.

Ailem ve yakın çevrem 28 Şubat'ı yakından tanırdı. Maalesef bu yaranın hep konuşulduğu bir ortamda büyüdüm ancak beni en etkileyen yara, bir tanıdığımın sokakta yürürken başından başörtüsünün çekilmesiydi. İlk örtündüğümde normalde üç iğneyle yapabileceğim şalımı olur da sokakta birisi başımdan çeker diye altı iğneyle yapardım ki başımdan çıkmasın. 15 Temmuz gecesi de "Ya darbe başarılı olursa ve ben okumak için başımı açmak zorunda bırakılırsam? Psikoloji okumaktan vazgeçmek zorunda kalırım." diye sabaha kadar ağlamıştım. Bu travma bana işte böyle aktarıldı.

Lisede okulda ferace giyen tek kişi bendim. Neredeyse herkes dalga geçti, en başarılı öğrencilerden biriydim ama artık adımı anmamaya başladılar çünkü beynime nefes aldırmayan bu kararı verdiğime göre aslında ben zeki değilmişim. Çok ağladım, çok üzüldüm. Mescitte namaz kıldıktan sonra ağlarken derslere geç kalmışlığım çoktur.

7 yılımın en güzel tarafı çevremi İslam'a ısındırmak oldu. Bir arkadaşım "Dini o dine inananlardan değil de o dinin kitabından öğrenmek gerek." derdi. Benimle sohbet ederken "Dini senden öğrenmek bana çok keyif veriyor Ebrar'ım." demişti. Eve gelince ağlayarak babama anlatmıştım. Benden sonra örtünen çok arkadaşım oldu. Din derslerinde İslam'a saldıran tüm tepkilere cevap olsun diye durmadan okurdum. Ferace giydiğim için benimle dalga geçenler liseden mezun olurken benden helallik istemişlerdi. E çünkü.

Lisemin önündeki otobüs durağının mini kütüphanesine kiliseden İncil gelirdi. İnsanlar otobüsü beklerken İncil okurdu. Dedim ki "Neden Kur'an da okumasınlar?" Babamla bir sürü Kur'an alıp o kütüphaneye koymuştuk. Okul çıkışında otobüsü beklerken Kur'an'ı inceleyen insanları görmek 17 yaşındaki Ebrar'ın o dönemki en büyük başarısıydı. Sonrasında İncil'i ve Tevrat'ı detaylıca okudum. Kur'an en güzeliydi. En şaşmaz, en güzel dil, en hayata uygun olanı. Emindim.

İyi bir Müslüman olmak için elimden geleni yapıyorum. İslam'ı iyi temsil eden, iyi kalpli ve güvenilir olarak tanınan, "O diyorsa doğrudur." denilen ve hem iyi anne olan hem de iyi bir kariyer peşinde koşturan Müslüman bir kadın olmanın mücadelesini sürdürüyorum. Elbette iyi niyetinden emin olduğum diğer kadınların da haklarını savunarak. Kıyafetlerine ve inançlarına bakmaksızın.

gerard way on style, authenticity, gender, british music from the 70s and 90s... and COSTUMES. that was just a primer on the topic i actually want to talk about, which is how different the outfits this past tour have been stylistically from anything gerard has PULLED FROM or DONE.

this entire run, 2022-23, the closest gerard ever got to wearing something he would've worn during the first period (01-13) was the when we were young shows. part making fun: the second night (the first was cancelled) they wore a replica of their revenge album run outfit with HEAVY old age makeup. part homage: night three, they wore something so reminiscent of colleen atwood's work that in conjunction with gerard's tour designer (marina toybina) saying atwood worked with gerard on something not specified and toybina not claiming this outfit as she usually would, led people to believe this was the work of atwood. which is significant because she designed the original black parade costumes!

every single other show was unique in some way. from the tshirts to loose jeans to short shorts to tight skirts to a nurse uniform to a full joan of arc get-up. this isnt to say they didnt divert from the "uniform" back in the day with other outfits -- but the new stuff either became the new regular or they were rare. they were always on theme. even beyond that, the wwwy looks are what people know them for. it's part anti-marketing -- no defintion, no statement. they just performed and people loved it. the only person to even publicize it is toybina, who just talked about the craft.

it's also part anti-glam aesthetically. for a decade, the same figures informed gerard's performance style. in evolving past The Past, he moves away from those figures. never entirely, especially not in artistic ideology. like you can see traces of ferry's idea of the authentic self interrupting expectations or bowie's evolution into softer adaptations of past selves -- but not as much as the hesitant alien look which was explicitly about that. looking at original glam rock style like bowie as ziggy stardust, there is an accentuation, drama, and single vision which defined mcr's revenge and early black parade aesthetics. those periods were gerard's biggest dedication to hair and make up until hesitant alien, which he describes as a return to glam.

looking at the tour vision today, it has none of these qualities. ive talked about how the outfits (mostly) arent highly dramatic or highly gendered, which is why i dont think calling it drag fits. esp on the drama point, that's a key aspect of glam missed. there's no makeup, no accentuation, no BIGNESS. the tour is marked by its long-range simplicity. when the drama comes, it's in the dirty and off-putting, not style. it's interesting that when way does act as a character, like the office worker or dracula, it's entirely physical like a stage actor not a singer. though those are just sparks. he doesnt "break" because it's just gerard as we know him.

one final thread to address here is the gender sphere. if gerard explicitly pulled from glam rock mcr 1.0 into hesitant alien, and he's mostly divorced from glam now... where is all this newfound gender presentation exploration coming from? from female archetypes (cheerleader, jackie-o) to theatrical gender neutrality (any of the body suits) to what wouldve been called "metrosexual" in 2006 (atlanta, nj2) to just a general feminine outfit (firefly, 8/9 of the 2023 leg) -- the artist has their source, meaning, motivation, sure. this step back from talking about anything is sooooooo genius for getting people to take what they want from the tour's artistic output. interpretation fuels discussion. people keep talking about the possible narratives of the albums. people keep talking about the constructed interpersonal narratives. people will keep talking about the mysterious narrative of this tour.

what people have taken from the looks of this tour is that they are a recontextualization of symbols gerard has always connected to -- one example is how cheerleaders went from an old failed pitch to the im not okay mv to revenge photoshoots to the blood and teenagers mvs. but unlike the wwwy outfits, he isnt using the symbols in the same way. it's entirely new that he becomes the exploited female figure he's attached to. the inspiration is the self. there's no avoidance. i think "foundations" had a lot do with the direction of the tour -- its self-reflection forming a new image, in both lyrics and sound, is exactly what the tour looks have been about. not Glam, not Post Glam... not mcr 1.0, not not mcr 1.0... making up new words for an old language to write stories not possible with just the old
