A Shamanic Odyssey – Journey Into Ayahuasca Spirituality
Tumblr media
Every now as well as then a great book goes along that not only wows its target market yet sparks movement. Which is just what Aya: A Shamanic Odyssey is.
Here is a passage from guide thanks to the writer as well as author. Enjoy.
Introduction: Candidates of the Mystery
Lima Airport, Peru Wednesday, June 28th, 2006
THE CLEAN WHITE WALLS OF THE WORK AREA ARE TAGGED WITH grafiti: "We that resolve mystery, come to be secret," alchemical knowledge bied far via the ages and also currently in the clean and sterile men's bathrooms at the Lima airport terminal departure lounge. Scrawled, no question, by among the travelers suffering in the food court.
Outside, milling under the common stare of safety and security video cameras are brilliant sprinkles of vivid spirits wearing crystals, grains as well as indigenous American Indian paraphernalia, middle-aged academics with "Erowid" medicine internet site t-shirts, and passengers that provide you that weird conspiratorial smile that claims: yes, we are right here for the conference. And here we are chowing down on McDonalds and also Donut King, getting our last hits of human being before hitting the jungle city of Iquitos and also shamanic boot camp.
It seems like some whacked out truth TV program, a generational photo of a new psychedelic wave just prior to it damages. Bright-eyed Westerners about to die as well as be reborn in the damp jungles of Peru, consuming alcohol the hallucinogenic mixture ayahuasca ...
Ayahuasca is a plant medication that has been used by the aboriginal individuals of South The U.S.A. for centuries to heal physical disorders and, they claim, to cleanse and cleanse the spirit. It was discovered by the West in 1851 when the epic British botanist Richard Spruce checked out the Rio Basin and was presented to the creeping plant by the Tokanoan Indians. Spruce gave the creeping plant its taxonomic name Banisteriopsis caapi, in different locations of South America it is also called yagè or hoasca. For a while in the mid-20th century drug stores that isolated the active residential or commercial properties of the vine called their compound "telepathine."
Research revealed it consisted of different harmala alkaloids which are after that boiled up in a mixture (likewise called ayahuasca) with a plethora of other plants, one being the leafy Psychotria viridis, which consists of the effective hallucinogenic chemical Dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT. On its own the vine is not orally energetic but it does consist of powerful MAO (mono-amine oxidase) inhibitors that subdue the body's very own enzymes as well as allow the DMT to potentiate.
Tumblr media
Science has made mindful ventures into the forest to study the vine in its native setting or, as with the "Hoasca Job" in the 1990s, to study church members of groups like União do Vegetal (UDV) who consume ayahuasca as part of their syncretic Christian-jungle religious beliefs. Exactly what they located was that routine ayahuasca usage purged the mind clean as well as enhanced receptor sites, recommending the vine might be a medical goldmine.
But what science can not explain is the psychic result of this "mother of all plants", the feeling of the numinous and also the spiritual globe it supposedly opens. Those that consume alcohol state that each ayahuasca trip is distinct. They say that the spirit of the vine comes active, it overviews as well as shows as well as on the other side absolutely nothing is ever before the exact same. Approximately they say.
The indigenous males and females that guard the knowledge of the creeping plant and also of the spirits it is stated to reveal are the curanderos and curanderas-- or as the West would call them-- shamans. Their duty has been that of therapist, priest and tourist in between globes, acting as intermediaries between the spiritual dimension as well as this globe in behalf of their patients.
Yet the needs of the work and the surge of Western materialism throughout South America have seen a loss in status-- and also clients-- for the curanderos. The career, generally genetic, was in danger of termination before an unmatched wave of Western gringos began being available in search of ayahuasca and the recovery it could provide.
Over the last twenty years or so a new gringo path-- this a trip of the soul-- has been blossoming in the jungles of South America. Hunters and also thrillseekers alike have actually been coming from the West for a reconnection to the much deeper fact shamanism connects one to-- and restoring amazing tales of hallucinogenic journeys, healing as well as enlightenment.
Indigenous shamanism has quickly come to be the most successful organisation in town and various forest lodges as well as hideaways have emerged across South America to accommodate the influx of abundant visitors. This has actually spilled over into the net as hundreds of ayahuasca internet sites, conversation spaces and also forums have actually arised to crystallize a global subculture engaging with a native spiritual method and also seeding it back into the Western world.
As well as being utilized by hundreds of thousands, maybe countless indigenous individuals throughout South The U.S.A., ayahuasca has also ended up being one of the globe's fastest expanding religions, with branches of Brazilian churches like Santo Daime as well as União do Vegetal emerging in Europe, Britain, Australasia, The U.S.A., Japan as well as elsewhere. In January 2006 the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of a New Mexico branch of the UDV, saying they had a constitutional right to be permitted to lawfully practise their ayahuasca ceremonies under the liberty of religion law. The US government promptly appealed, however the genie ran out the bottle.
The secret of ayahuasca had left the jungle and also entered the cities, by means of religious beliefs, media and the web. And here I was, a thirty-six-year-old freelance reporter, a gonzo reporter in the classic Hunter S. Thomson as well as Tom Wolfe style, freelancing for Australian Penthouse on an academic-style seminar with a pronounced spin: it was everything about Amazonian shamanism, with a hands-on component.
Strange, to believe that in the first years of the 21st century I would certainly be going to the Peruvian jungles in search of a link to the primitive consciousness that aboriginal knowledge exposed. Yet in a globe of global warming and also environmental collapse it seemed even more urgent to reconnect with the earth in a visceral means. And also in this age of fact television, blog writing as well as city monitoring, being an embedded journalist was par for the program. Nowadays we're all part of the story-- and getting down-and-dirty in the far abyss of awareness was a possibility I was relishing.
Despite cultural diffidence back in the standard world of battle, home mortgages as well as climate adjustment, Australian Penthouse was willing to have a peek under the covers of reality as well as welcome the tale I was going after-- to comprehend the mythic pull of shamanism-- one of the last worldwide archetypes that connects to a numinous "Various other." At the very same time it's also one of the most appropriated, glorified and also repackaged brand names embedded in the worldwide consciousness. So a lot so that it now attracts thousands of Westerners yearly back to the going away forests as well as the plant medications they provide.
But what was the company of spirituality doing to all these backpacking ayahuasca tourists that dared to trip into the enigmas of creation? And what did it say regarding the expanding Western demand for a genuine reconnection to the planet?
' Margaret ... Shane?' I detect a number of acquainted faces sitting at a table in the McDonalds food court, surrounded by their travel luggage and that homogenized glaze that global vacationers give off when they've remained in flight terminal separation lounges for also long and their inner body clocks have actually gone crazy. Margaret's furiously filling electronic images from their video camera into an iBook while Shane stops briefly over the keyboard and also searches for with a smile. With his stocky broad shoulders and also close-shaven head he resembles a cop, but nothing might be additionally from the truth.
' Dr Razam, I presume,' Shane jokes, trembling my hand as well as grinning extensively. 'I'm grateful you might make it.' 'Consuming hallucinogenic brews with the medicine men of the Amazon? I wouldn't miss this for the globe.' 'Rak? Just how are you beloved?' Margaret cries, standing up as well as offering me a hug filled with unconditional love.

Unpacking my Library • Once Upon a Time in the West • Christopher Frayling • 2019
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can resist anything but temptation...especially in relation to interesting and beautifully designed books. Indeed, I’ve always judged a book by its cover, and I was very happy to buy a copy of Christopher Frayling’s new book about Once Upon a Time in the West.
We listened to Christopher, a brilliant performer, speak about the film at the NFT last week. Over the years, Christopher has interviewed almost everybody involved in the making of this film, and the new book collects all of this research, along with stories and pictures, into one place. The author is also an expert in the history of the cinema western genre, and in the Italian film industry too. So, the book has both a depth of detail about the film, and a breadth of context.
Actually, that’s just like the film itself.
The book reminded me that I have a big poster for the film.
I’ve posted before about the film, back in 2011...
There are lots of films about the history of the wild west and many of those films include railway trains. Usually, the train is high-jacked or robbed, or chased by Indians. It’s unusual for the railway system to be structurally embedded in the plot; so as to draw out issues of land-grab, profiteering and social progress. This is post about Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).
The western genre has been a staple of the film industry from the very beginning. Of course, it took a view from outside Hollywood to see what “the Western” could be…
The European Western
During the 1960s, the Italian film industry re-invented the American western film. The genre was attractive for a variety of reasons. The first was that, for many Europeans and because of familiarity, the western was widely acknowledged as a quintessentially American form of film storytelling. Secondly, the pared-down circumstances of the American west allowed for a heightened, or operatic, intensity of drama. Finally, the films were attractive to producers in terms of costs because of their relative economy. These films became identified, because of their Italian origins, as spaghetti westerns.
Italian film-makers drew on their familiarity with the western genre to re-cast the western in a more cynical light than their American contemporaries. Film-makers in America had generally mythologised the west in terms of the harsh, but fair, binary moral certainties of biblical teaching.
The ironic re-invention of the genre became a global phenomenon through the success of Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy. Clint Eastwood was cast as the man-with-no-name bounty hunter, Blondie, and was launched toward global superstardom.
The success of these films encouraged the producers to give the director, Sergio Leone, carte blanche for his next project. That project became Once Upon a Time in the West. In the beginning, the film was elaborated by Leone, Dario Argento and Bernardo Bertolucci. The collaboration between these three produced a story with a conceptual and philosophical sophistication that is unusual for cinema. Argento and Bertolucci both went on to have important careers as film directors.
Marx in the West
The story of Once Upon a Time is set against the land-grab associated with the building of the trans-continental railway. So the drama is played out, against the background of money (capital) and technology (the railway and guns) that provides the determining forces for their actions. The foregrounding of these powerful determinants informs the film with a historical, sociological and psychological realism.
In the 1960s, the critical understanding of human behaviour was advanced through the development of social-science methodologies. The revelation, in detail, of the complex workings of modern society was generally understood as informed by Marxist theory and the pop culture sensibility of the Frankfurt School intellectuals. So, the film provides a watershed by acknowledging and foregrounding, in part at least, the complexity of the systems that determine our behaviour.
Every child is familiar with the railway as a system of interconnected mechanical parts. The model railway layout provides for a perfect representation, in miniature and in simplified terms, of the complex original. It was entirely appropriate that the scriptwriters of Once Upon a Time in the West should focus on the railway as signifier of a specific form of social, political and economic organisation.
The Opening (The Train Arrives)
The title sequence of the film is almost half an hour long. Three men, wearing trademark dusters, await the train and form an intimidating welcoming committee. After a long wait, the train arrives. The men are surprised when no one appears. It is only as the train departs that they become aware of the visitor. After some discussion, a gunfight takes place and the newcomer rides away.
The duster coats are recognised as belonging to a local gang. In fact the agents of railway speculator, Morton, wear the coats as a form of disguise. The ruthlessness of Morton is based on a number of personalities associated with the American railway boom and its associated frauds, scandals and mayhem.
The underhand and double-dealing of the railway speculator provides the framework for a film about violence, duplicity, and revenge.
The duster is a long, loose work coat made of canvas or linen. It was designed to be worn by horsemen and to fit over their normal clothing and to protect it from trail dust. For practical purposes the coat had an exaggerated vent that allowed the coat to be worn comfortably whilst riding. On foot, the coats had a particular flapping gait. In addition the long, loose, coats allowed a variety of guns and weapons to be concealed. Just like the poncho, the coats allowed for the ready and speedy use of firearms. So the flapping duster was associated in the popular imagination, and from its very beginning, with violent and itinerant groups of horsemen.
These specific associations help explain why the duster was rarely seen in the traditional western. The hero, individually isolated, could ride long distances without requiring special clothing except in the most difficult circumstances. Furthermore, the moral integrity of the hero would be fatally compromised by the use of a coat to hide a gun. Lastly, the action of most westerns is played out against the civilised backdrop of town and community. Even the saloon bar setting of many westerns required the protagonists to fight it out in their Sunday best.
At the same time as the first train, and the visitor, is arriving a terrible massacre is occurring. Over at the Sweetwater Ranch, Morton’s gangsters have murdered an entire family, including the children; the McBains. They are gunned down as they prepare to welcome their new stepmother to the home. The arrival of this woman into the family is a sign of better things. After years of struggle and isolation, the railway is coming and the water, at the eponymous Sweetwater, will bring people, wealth and excitement. Sweetwater will become a whole town and community. McBain’s prescience will have been vindicated.
The Ending (The Railway Arrives)
At the end of the film, the railway is shown arriving at Sweetwater. The new Mrs McBain is shown welcoming workers to a feast and with great pitchers of refreshment. So, notwithstanding all the violence and mayhem, the railway is acknowledged to be an instrument of social progress…
The film starred Charles Bronson, Jason Robards and, cast against type, Henry Fonda. The female lead was Claudia Cardinale. The film has a remarkable musical score by Ennio Morricone.
This is my all time favourite film. I’ve watched it many times and I’m still amazed by it. It’s big, and clever, and beautiful. If you watch the film and like it, give Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate (1980) a go.
Supplemental Sunday 21st August 2011
The film is routinely described as “epic.” It’s certainly got big themes played out against the big spaces of the mid-west. Amongst the cruel brutality there are passages of amazing beauty. One of these, my favourite, is the scene when Mrs McBain (Claudia Cardinale) arrives at Flagstone Station. The train pulls up, she gets off, and is a bit surprised that there is no one to meet her (she doesn’t know that the entire McBain family have been murdered). She moves along the platform and arrives at the ticket office. The camera moves vertically over the building to reveal the town beyond.
The whole scene is touched by the terrible pathos of what we know to have happened. The amazing music by Ennio Morricone adds the finishing touch.
I’ve watched the film loads of times and have payed the opening sequence over and over. Even after all these years, and notwithstanding this familiarity, the sequence of Mrs McBain arriving still amazes me. The combination of pathos, sadness, and beauty; all combined in image, movement and music, is heartbreakingly moving.

Mona Singh, who is playing the role of a scientist (Moshmi) in an interview with DNA said, “I have never played a scientist before. And to add to it, I play a Bengali lady in the series, for which I had to work on my dialect too. It was something that was new to me. I had no past references that could be put to use. It was quite a challenge for me which was why I wanted to take this up.”
Sakshi Tanwar, who also plays a disciplined Mission Coordinator shares, “M.O.M is an impressive web series completely dominant with women-centric content. I am extremely overwhelmed that ALTBalaji gave me the character of Nandita Hariprasad, which is a senior scientist at ISA (Indian Space Agency). This series completely reiterates the fact that women today can achieve the impossible and work at any position in their workspace.”

The Many Women of Many Indias.
Exploring India as a female solo. A cautionary tale that invites challenges, sacrifices and serious balls!
Tumblr media
Abroad Alone
All zipped up and strapped in, I feel the weight of my 19kg backpack sitting neatly on my hips as I await the long journey to Delhi ahead of me. With my mum unconvinced by my detailed itinerary and multiple friends’ raised eyebrows, I board my flight to uncover the diverse and ever evolving many places and spaces of India.
A journey through India is impossible to summarise. My first destination of many being New Delhi; home to over 21.7 million people and taking first place as the worst city to be a woman. With zero expectations but my prior research, I quickly came to learn the larger differences between city-bred foreign girl and local Indian women of the same age. Lost in a sea of chaotic crowds, I am quickly collected by a unimpressionable docile woman who I soon become passenger to en-route to my accommodation. ‘Taxi’s for women by women’. My first encounter of India’s efforts to make their country a safer, more secure and inviting places for female travellers. Unsurprisingly, I was immediately put to ease, however my curiosity to engage with local women invited a conversation I will never forget. Nega is a woman who drives women to their destination everyday. She is one of the rare few who now no longer fears leaving the house with her employment giving her a newfound sense of independence.
Curtseying through a heated traffic jam, Nega told of her previous experience with India’s transport services which are said to favour female safety with train compartments reserved specifically for female passengers. That apart, she relented that a woman can never fully relax on the roads, buses or trains once out of the house. With an average of 91 rape victims per day, it is no surprise “vigilance, precautions and always looking out for unwanted attention is a normal part of everyday life here in India”. Nega’s words didn’t simply apply to local women; they would be a mantra I followed closely throughout the course of my adventure.
Tumblr media
Solo Woman Shelter
A solo exploration is nothing without unexpected chance conversation. At a stand still trying to contemplate how one crosses the heavily populated streets in front of me, I am inundated with the smell of burnt buttered chapati bread as stale oils glaze the gravel ridden road and the deafening sound of horns form a blur. Perspiring from my cracked upper lip, I can’t help but grapple with the uneasy feeling that I should be inside, away from the hustle, hassle and exhausting unknown that awaits me. How? In a country that prices itself so heavily on being the world’s largest democracy does a white woman become the primary subject of attention over holy temples, monuments and ancient artefacts that grace this place. Seeking shelter, I wound up a local cafe called ‘Sheroes Hangout’, Agra. With a ‘pay at your will’ model, this easily hidden nook stands for a great deal more than the flavourful okra, dahl and roti bread it plates up.
The women who served me have all fought a battle of survival after a life changing alteration to their appearance. Acid attack survival is only the beginning of the larger social and societal change these women are determined to cultivate. With it’s sole purpose to empower acid attack victims; the courage, intelligence and resilience of these women is nothing short of an inspiration. By now, I have come to learn the value of female community and employment opportunity that this organisation has managed to manifest. “Previously I was sifting wheat crop in a field and I was ostracised to the outskirts of my hometown because of my appearance.” As I nurse my rotund stomach into a state of indigestion, I muse on the very real fact that large parts of India remain predominately patriarchal and yet despite the indescribable battle these women have already fought, they continue to fight a larger war. This war being one that is facilitating a slow but steady mindset shift for gender equality and acceptance in India. I am immensely proud in this moment to be a female.
Tumblr media
Lost and found: Intelligence
Like a deer in the headlights, I watch the dirty ceiling fan make a slow and swooping cycle as it shifts the already unrelenting hot air around my room. Now in Tordi Garg, a small village, 3 and little hours from Jaipur, away from the golden triangle of illustrious sights, I experience what it really feels to live local in India. With an obligatory cast system etiquette and a population where most live below the poverty line, I am greeted with welcoming waves, smiles and conversation as I begin to tackle the uneven alleyways before me. Soaking in my surroundings, I admire the innovative drainage system operations while grey pigeons circulate the streets in search of left over grains fed to ever wandering cow that roams. It is next to said cow, that I meet Dabu, a wide cheeked and exuberantly energetic boy, backpack in hand on his morning walk to school. Dabu was proud to talk on the Indian school system in his town and the active assistance his government provides.
No older than seven, Dabu told me life as a boy at school is fairly fun, “in my class, we have the same number of girls and boys, the government makes sure both girls and boys come and learn.” I proceeded to learn that the Indian government takes little more seriously than a good education to all it’s citizens. With laws that ensure a school is located within 5km from every Indian rural village and that those living below the poverty line have access to transport and culinary services whilst to and fro from school, I am pleasantly surprised to learn the value of education in India regardless of ones gender or financial position. With a school system governed on performance over age, it is no surprise that India forms some of the most intelligent, innovative and disciplined individuals both on a national and International scale. “We are incentivised with a bike we can ride to school if we perform well in class, so the girls are often very competitive with the boys, it’s very fun!”
While I struggled to understand where the shift in equal employment opportunity begins as adults, I remain impressed by India’s ‘work from the ground up’ approach, teaching boys and girls the value of education from an early age; irrespective if that education leads to work in local trade or international business. Like many visitors to the villages of India before me, I am in awe of the simple way of life that make up the maze of streets in Tordi, and I choose to remain hopeful that with a respectable education structure, simple towns such as Tordi, will continue to foster smart and stronger women who will continue to fight for their right to employment they have equally earned.

One night, One club
As my tuck tuck rolls up to what resembles a cave fit for a pack of lions, I observe the baron night scape that surrounds and momentarily question what I’ve gotten myself into and how in the world I will ever get home. With free entry and drinks all night, not surprisingly I already have my hesitations when it comes to the sanctity of the establishment for females. Oh how wrong I was! While the human size fan that circles the ceiling creates unintentional vibrations below my feet and deafening EDM music fills the room, I quickly seek solace outside at the bar and subsequently wind up in conversation with the owner of the club. A confident and outspoken she-man herself, I quickly learnt her focus in opening her own club. “My passion was to create a safe and equally fun clubbing environment for females.” With rules such as: No men allowed in the facility without the accompaniment of their girlfriend or partner and further single men entry age restrictions, “the number of inappropriate incidents has drastically reduced.” “I saw so many women leaving the clubs crying or uncomfortable from their time; it should be fun y’know, happy and relaxed, yes, that’s my goal.”
With enough room to perform my uncoordinated attempt at dancing and not one unwanted call of attention or further action, my guard dropped and it was a female free for all; with some truely lifelong friends made. One of the most liberating experiences as a female, I couldn’t but make comparison to other parts of the world. Of course, in no way am I saying that my clubbing experience was exclusive to the entirety of India, that would simply be false. However, it did give me a glimpse of hope that such places are popping up to pave the way forward for women in India, both as a local and visitor. This unique and bizarre experience is something I take with me home and should be shared in an effort to establish a new normal towards Indian expectations for future travellers.

Indian is hard. It is not an easy place to live, commute, or visit. India is enthralling, overwhelming. Never will you feel so many different emotions in one day. From amazement, to exasperation, to satisfaction, to frustration, it is a complex beast. If you’re going to go, which you absolutely should, my recommendation is simply to do your research. Nothing about Indian travel is easy. It is a cluster of mixed emotions, experiences and if you know what to expect and you are looking to throw yourself into a completely different way of life, then this is the place for you. Don’t expect it to be fun, because that is simply not a term you can use for the many cities and villages of India. However, do expect the most colourful, historically inviting, challenging and rewarding experience of a lifetime.
