Hi Jennifer. How typical is it for an author to find out their pub date from a sales listing, like seeing their book on Amazon, rather than being told by their publisher? I understand publishing likes to justify doing things differently than any other industry, but it seems disrespectful to find out your pub date from the internet rather than your own team of collaborators.
"Disrespectful" feels a little dramatic. I really don't think it's personal or should be taken as a slight or anything like that.
Short answer: Your editor is your main liaison with the publisher, and they aren't the ones who create the publication schedule. If they haven't told you your pub date, it's either because they don't know it yet, or because they thought they DID tell you and didn't realize they hadn't, but at no point is this SECRET information or anything, and they'd be happy to tell you or find out for you if/when that info is available. So, as with most things, if you want to know something you don't know, the best thing to do is ASK.
Long answer: Here's the deal: Waaaaaay before your book is even a product yet, probably when you get the offer, you'll know the pub season they are shooting for. That is like, say, "Spring 2026", which could be anywhere from maybe late Feb - early May (all publishers might be a LITTLE different here) -- but basically, the general months that they intend for this to be published. Now that COULD change for any number of reasons -- it's two years from now! Who knows what will happen between now and then! -- But you know the approximate time, and if it DOES get pushed a season, you'll know well ahead of time, because the deadline will change.
A year passes. Maybe more. At some point, taking into account the dozens (or even hundreds) of other books also scheduled for Spring 2026, the publisher will narrow down what books are going to come out which month / week. This isn't your editor deciding this, btw, and your editor may or may not be aware when this schedule is being decided, and whether they are or not, it's still not set in stone. At this stage the publisher may have just decided "OK this is a May 2026 book" but not know the exact date. (A lot of times, if you look up a book quite early, it will say "May 1, 2026" but then closer to the pub date it will say "May 16th" or whatever -- because they chose the general month, and then the specific day later.)
MEANWHILE, you are going back and forth with your editor about copyedits, the jacket, blurbs, whatever -- there might be a ton of information going back and forth. At some point your editor might have said, "this is a May book" but they didn't mention "May 1st" or "May 16th" because, well, they didn't know or realize that this had been decided, or because it hasn't been. So you look it up and see "May 16th" -- that doesn't mean that they were hiding that info from you, or anything LIKE that -- that info is just not the first most-pressing thing in the midst of all the other things your editor has to communicate with you, and again, they might not even realize was decided, or up online, or what's online might be a placeholder or something.
It doesn't become super important for you to know the exact date until, like, a few months before pub, when you are scheduling things like a launch party or whatever -- At which point, you will have been told, or they'll THINK you have been told, because you've been told a lot of things, but if you HAVEN'T been told, you can always ASK! And if you see something online, you can (and should) ask for confirmation that the info is correct.

Ocado and Next cut sick pay for unvaccinated isolating staff
Ocado and Next have cut sick pay for unvaccinated staff that must self-isolate because of Covid exposure, the BBC has learned.
Both retailers will continue to pay full sick pay to unvaccinated workers if they test positive for the virus.
Furniture giant Ikea is also among employers making similar moves, as staff absences rise.
Next said it was an "emotive topic" but that it had to balance staff and shareholder needs.
It is unclear when next made the change but it is believed to have been recent.
Online grocer Ocado confirmed on Thursday that it had adopted the same policy as Next this week.
Next currently pays store sales consultants and stock assistants between £6.55 and £9.21 an hour and warehouse operatives between £9.30 and £11.26 an hour many business listings.
But unvaccinated workers who are required to isolate could now receive as little as £96.35 a week - the Statutory Sick Pay minimum - unless there are mitigating circumstances.

Last month, official self-isolation guidance was relaxed for people who have been jabbed, meaning they do not need to isolate if they have been exposed to a positive case.
But there was no change to the guidance for unvaccinated close contacts, who must still self-isolate for 10 full days after their date of exposure.
What are your sick pay rights?
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is the minimum amount employers must pay, but some employers offer more than SSP - this is normally known as a company or contractual sick pay.
Beth Hale, the partner at employment law firm CM Murray, said claims of direct discrimination due to this kind of sick pay policy were unlikely to succeed as being opposed to vaccination was "unlikely to be a protected belief for the purposes of the Equality Act."
"While the policy may have a disproportionate impact on those from certain ethnic or religious groups (which could give rise to a claim for indirect discrimination), an employer may well be able to justify the policy on the basis of their legitimate business needs," she added.
She said where employers are struggling with significant staff absences because of the large case numbers, it "seemed reasonable" that they may want to take steps to encourage vaccination amongst their workforce in this way.
But she added that employers need to be "careful that policies are communicated carefully and sensitively" to avoid employee relations issues.
Many companies, including next, faced labour shortages in 2021 and some are now are seeing mass absences due to the more infectious Omicron Covid strain.
This week it emerged that Ikea, which employs about 10,000 people in the UK, had changed its policy on unvaccinated staff that have been exposed to coronavirus.
Sick pay cuts will also be implemented at Wessex Water and in the US several major companies have started penalizing un-jabbed workers.
However, the major UK supermarkets and Amazon told the BBC their policies had not changed.
NeXT’s move comes days after it said it was putting up its prices to offset higher wage and manufacturing costs.
The retailer said prices for its spring and summer clothing and homeware ranges would climb by 3.7% from a year earlier, while it expects a 6% rise for autumn and winter goods.
The company forecasts full-year sales to rise by 7% overall, but it warned it could face a tougher trading environment in 2022 given the financial pressures facing households, such as higher energy bills.
In October last year, Next boss Lord Wolfson said the retailer had struggled with labour shortages because workers were not available in the places needed and seasonal workers had proved difficult to recruit.
The executive, who supported Brexit, said the problem could be solved by companies hiring overseas workers and paying “visa tax" business listings.

Average wages at Ikea are between about £400 and £450, depending on location and, as is the case at many companies, staff gets enhanced sick pay. The move was first reported by the Mail on Sunday.
Ikea, which employs about 10,000 people in the UK, said in a statement: "Fully vaccinated co-workers or those that are unvaccinated owing to mitigating circumstances which, for example, could include pregnancy or other medical grounds, will receive full pay.
"Unvaccinated co-workers without mitigating circumstances that test positive with Covid will be paid full company sick pay in line with our company absence policy free business listings.
"Unvaccinated co-workers without mitigating circumstances who have been identified as close contacts of a positive case will be paid Statutory Sick Pay."
In England, people who are vaccinated with at least two doses need not self-isolate if they have been in close contact with someone infected with Covid. Unvaccinated people contacted through the government's test-and-trace system must still isolate by law.
Many companies complained of labour shortages throughout 2021, and now are seeing mass absences due to the more infectious Omicron Covid strain.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson repeated on Monday that the data continued to show those people most seriously affected by Omicron remained unvaccinated.
Wessex Water's sick pay rule change comes into force this week.
Any employee without at least one Covid-19 vaccination - who does not have a valid medical reason - or does not have a confirmed vaccination appointment, will get only statutory sick pay if required to self-isolate due to close contact with someone testing positive.
A Wessex Water spokesperson said absences have soared this year: "The vast majority of our workforce has been vaccinated and it's important as a company providing essential services with key worker employees, the remainder gets vaccinated to protect themselves, customers, and their colleagues.
"Absences due to Covid have doubled in the last week, so we need everyone to be available so we can continue to provide uninterrupted essential water and sewerage services."
Legal risks
The company said that throughout the pandemic it had not furloughed staff and those self-isolating had received full payment.
Last year, supermarket Morrisons cut sick pay terms, while several companies, including banking giant Citigroup, introduced a "no jab, no job" policy. Delta Airlines imposed a surcharge on unvaccinated staff members of its healthcare plan.
Ben Willmott, head of public policy at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), told the BBC there were pros and cons with changing sick pay terms for certain workers.
It could encourage staff to get vaccinated, but others might be less likely to test themselves or self-isolate because they could not afford time off work at the statutory rate of about £96.
His organization's official guidance was not to differentiate between employees, as the consequences could be complex and there were potential legal problems.
"You would have to manage it on a case-by-case basis because of legal risks," Mr Willmott said.
Earlier this month, David Josephs, boss of food importer and retailer All Greens, told the BBC that staff at some firms was ignoring Covid rules for financial reasons.
"We know that in our sector a lot of staff does not get paid sick pay. Ours do - but staff that are on limited contracts or on minimum wage cannot afford to be off work," he said.
Employment lawyer Sarah Ozanne, of CMS, also warned of complex legal issues and said striking the right balance was difficult.
"This action [by Ikea] seems more of a reaction to staff shortages and how to manage them than any intended 'discrimination' of the unvaccinated," she said.
"But employers should consider whether their actions are proportionate as a means of achieving the aim of getting employees back into work."

KOKIA updates - July 1-14, 2024
Below, I have summarized KOKIA’s announcements and messages for the first half of July, 2024. As explained here, this is the new style of updates for the foreseeable future by necessity. I unfortunately still can't make any promises about full translations yet. Thank you for your understanding.

Upcoming performances
In her news entry for July 1, KOKIA announces she's returning to Shanghai this summer. This is the concert she had to postpone way back in 2020: 'Flower banquet under starry skies'. At long last, the concert will now be performed as yet, with new content after 4 years of waiting. The dates are August 10 and 11, with the 10th being the date of the Tanabata star festival in China. As originally planned, the concert will be held at the Shanghai Daning Theatre. Tickets are available via Bilibili membership or the theatre app.
The synopsis promises she will perform her song Hana utage ('flower banquet'), and that the concert will make use of the latest projection fusion techniques to carry you into a fantastical KOKIA world. In a very rare occurrence, it will permitted to film one song in the encore session.

Another new performance gets announced in her news entry for July 4: KOKIA will be appearing at the Engawa music festival Mizu no oto concert ('sound of water') at Dorogawa Onsen (hot springs), Tenkawa village, Nara prefecture. The performances are on September 28 and 29, with the free pre-concert on the 28th from 19:00 to 20:00, the main concert on the 29th from 13:30 to 16:00 (standing free, seats paid) and the free Engawa concert from 16:30 to 19:00. KOKIA will make her appearance during the main concert on the 29th.

As previously reported, KOKIA will be holding a strings concert on November 2 at Suntory Hall Blue Rose, Tokyo: SHI-NA-RU. She talks a bit more about this in her news entry for July 1. The afternoon performance opens at 14:45 and starts at 15:30, with the evening performance opening at 18:15 and starting at 19:00. General ticket sales are now open and linked above. She will be accompanied by pianist Souta Seta, violinist Norihiro Tsuru, and cellist Ayako.

I did a Boobub Promo: here's what happened so far...
Bookbub international deal: $359 (US)

Promo went out on the Wednesday newsletter. I was allowed to pick how long the sale would last. Based on Bookbub's recommendations, I entered a 5 day discount, taking the sale thru Sunday. The book stayed on their sight as a featured deal for that time period.
The big spike in sales was all Wednesday when the book went out. ~400 sales on Amazon.
Total sales: 663 ($252.66)
Amazon: 540 ($190.51)
B&N: 38 ($26.22)
Kobo: 47 ($16.55)
Kobo pluss: ??? (won't know until next month)
Apple/draft2digital: 38 ($19.38)
Projected real cost for prom: 106.34 (less than a trip to the grocery store)
This doesn't account for mysterious Kobo reads.
(A note on Kobo: I entered into and was selected for a spring reading feature at no cost to me, but this stacked promotions. Kobo took an additional 10% of sales. This account for the lower royalty.)
Since the promo last Wed, I already have 2 new 5-star ratings on Amazon US. ~15 people added my book To Read on Goodreads (this stat has bounced around a bit as people have actually read it or stopped reading it).
I reached #1 in all my Amazon US categories (some international #1s and top 10s) during the promo and stayed there for more than 2 days. The book also made it onto B&N bestseller lists and Kobo bestseller lists. I'd love to know how much this impacted sales.
If I had more books or especially more books in the series, I expect this would have been even more successful, but the full story of the promotion is still ongoing. All of this stuff adds up.
Compared to my feature on NetGalley last month, which cost $50 and got 31 interested readers (still no non-NetGalley reviews), this has had greater reach for less money. NetGalley had several booksellers request my debut, but I haven't seen anything from that yet.

League of Monsters
My second HUGE shout-out goes to Mechanoid Press and the Kickstarter for its upcoming League of Monsters anthology! The basic premise (which is explained in fuller detail on the Kickstarter page) is that a wealthy, benefactor has gathered various famous (or infamous) monsters in the 1950s to face the rise of a Nazi organization called the Last Reich. This organization is determined to gather every occult object they can find in order to rise to power once more. It is up to our band of creatures to use their powers and intelligence to hold back this ultimate force of evil. Bobby Nash, Russel Nohelty, and Teel James Glenn anchor this anthology. I feel very blessed to also have my story "Return to Eyeog ul-eg" included as well.
While we more than met our initial goal of $1000 to fund the anthology, we are about $155 from meeting our first stretch goal of $1500. If we meet this goal, our editor, James Palmer, is going to write an original League of Monsters story, "Date Night of the Living Dead," featuring our favorite almost love birds, Dr. Stephanie and Nate the Wolfman, and some Last Reich zombies. Should be great fun!

Wear Oh Where
There’s a lot to be said for being the oldest child. Unless you have a same-sex cousin nearby a year or two older than you, then you’ll never have to suffer the indignity of wearing hand-me-downs. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, like being the only girl in a brood of boys, and so forth, but generally speaking, people like me were apex consumers when it came to the clothing food chain.
In other words, I played a big role in what my younger brother got to wear.
Of course, that was a long time ago, and any stigma of wearing or otherwise acquiring previously owned goods has worn off. In fact, it has become the new norm. “Gently-used” is now code for “bargain,” and we gladly buy used cars, cameras, electronics, furniture, and clothing from a variety of sources. Whether it is at Goodwill or franchised outlets like Plato’s Closet and Clothes Mentor, to CraigsList and Facebook Marketplace, to online resale shops like Poshmark and Depop we are gobbling up items that someone else took the big hit on first.
While the trend was firmly in place before the pandemic, now in its inflationary wake, we are seeing these places become more popular than ever. Competition has increased among sellers as demand has increased. If anything, it has caused prices of used items to remain steady or even higher, yet still much cheaper than buying new.
The relative ease of setting up a resale shop on Poshmark or Depop is fueling the fire. Clothing also passes through auction sites like eBay as well, where people can bid on everything from blouses and slacks to purses. Shoppers have not lost their desire to look fashionable; they’re just being fashionably frugal.

Clothing and footwear have been major contributors to the overall inflation rate in the last two years, especially since so many people have returned to their offices. Whereas the pandemic caused sales of professional clothing to sag precipitously, it’s now game-on as people try to cobble together stylish wardrobes on incomes that have not yet been adjusted for inflation.
For those who choose to set up long-term shops in these portals, the challenge is finding inventory to sell, and then making the right choices. It’s no different from any retailer, because inventory can become the bane of your existence. You must have it to make sales and profits, but it can also sink the ship if you get stuck with it.
Some sellers routinely do the garage sale circuit, peruse the changing racks of clothing at Goodwill, as well as watch for blowout sales at stores like Dillard’s. There can be golden nuggets hiding in plain sight if you know what to look for. Others buy returned items to vendors like Amazon.


But there are other competitors in the room, notably Target and H&M, both of whom have launched partnerships with ThredUp. That’s another way of saying that resale has joined the big leagues.
In a world of fast fashion, though, one must wonder how many times some garments can change hands. If we’re talking about high-quality, higher-priced items, it might be possible for an item to have several owners over its useful life. But for garments produced in Asian sweatshops and purchased from vendors like Shein, you might be doing well to wear it and sell it once before the garment self-destructs.
Another important factor is fashion itself. Some items are timeless, like a men’s button-down collared shirt. But other items have very short shelf lives; that fashion-forward dress or shirt you buy this spring may be very dated come 2024.
All together, the resale market is consumers’ way of sending a signal to manufacturers and retailers alike: Your prices are high, and we cannot continue to just take it as if nothing has happened. Any stigmas once attached to hand-me-downs and otherwise used items is a non-starter. We’re good with it, and in fact, better off. Even my brother would agree.

Yiruma, stage name of Lee Ru-ma (Seoul, South Korea, February 15, 1978), is a South Korean composer of piano melodies. Lee Ru-ma was born and raised in South Korea, and educated in England. Yiruma began playing the piano at the age of five, and subsequently moved to London at the age of eleven, with the purpose of studying at the Purcell School of Music. In December 1996, he participated on the album The Musicians of Purcell. After graduating from the Purcell School of Music in July 1997, Yiruma continued his musical aspirations and completed a major composition at King's College London in June 2000. While studying at King's College, he released his first album Love Scene through the DECCA records. In addition, during his stay at the university, he participated in a musical tour in Europe. In a historic milestone for his country, Yiruma was the first Korean artist to receive an invitation to perform at MIDEM 2002 in Cannes, France. Early in his career, his records were released in Europe and Asia, which are already available internationally through various online sources such as iTunes, Amazon, and Yiruma's record company Stomp Records. In 2001, he released his most popular album to date, First Love. It featured his #1 bestseller River Flows in You, and this work has since been released on two other albums. Yiruma released his third album, From The Yellow Room, in 2003. Before its official release, it had already sold 30,000 copies and was the top ranked on various popular music charts, including Yes24, Phono, and Hot Tracks. His 12-city Korean tour was a sellout, as was his November concert at the Seoul National Arts Center. His fourth album was POEMUSIC. In 2006, the following year, she composed the theme song for a popular KBS drama, Spring Waltz. On her fifth album, H.I.S Monologue, she used a prepared piano. Yiruma has composed soundtracks for musicals, movies, and plays. Despite being successful in the music industry, Yiruma decided to serve in the South Korean military. Therefore, in 2006 he renounced his British citizenship and enlisted in the Korean Army. Upon completion of his service in the Korean Navy, he undertook the Yiruma Come Back Tour, Ribbonized, in 2008 in 20 cities across Korea. On the other hand, on January 1, 2009, he became a DJ for KBS1FM Yiruma music from around the world. In September 2010, he canceled his contract with Stomp Music and signed with Sony Music Entertainment of Korea. Stomp Music then filed an injunction to prohibit the sale of Yiruma's music, and the petition was accepted by the court in April 2011. Yiruma immediately filed an objection against the injunction, and the court verdict ultimately favored Yiruma. Yiruma is well known throughout the world, and his albums are sold throughout Asia, as well as in the United States and Europe. His most famous pieces are Kiss the Rain, Love Me and River Flows in You.
