NEMESIS AMBITION SPOILERS

[So I've been thinking of an alternate ending for Oswald's Nemesis quest because while I Do think bringing back your loved one should have horrible consequences, I didn't find the "but they don't remember you" plot twist very satisfying.

I think that after using all that Hesperidean cider, Oswald's father would still come back wrong. More specifically, he would come back bearing the same kind of injuries that Oswald and his accomplices have inflicted upon Cups. Half of his body burnt and marred, suffering from constant pain. He would be scared and confused and surprised to see his little girl, now a young man with blood on his hands and weighed down by a lot more than just the passage of time. But he would understand.

(Better than most, in fact. I always liked the idea of Oswald's father transitioning as an adult, back when they emigrated to England while Oswald was still a baby. It would also make a little more sense that Oswald would be staying with the working class, single parent who gave birth to him. I specifically didn't want Oswald's story to include any kind of tragedy regarding a hypothetical mother. He was exceedingly happy as the child of his single father.)

Anyway, he would try so hard to adjust to this new environment, the chronic pain, the constant worried looks Oswald would be giving him. Eventually though, he would realise that he's living on borrowed time; around the same time that Oswald would realise that this was another one of Cups' cruel lessons. The life he's given back to his father was just a cruel reflection of existence — the same kind of miserable existence he has purposefully left Cups to wallow in.

So I would imagine that on an agreed date (not very far in the future at all) Oswald would escort his father back to the Surface — up until a certain point, at least. There is only so far he could go, after all. And they would stand there and say the kind of goodbyes they never got to say before. And then Oswald would watch the person he loves more than life itself walk into the sunlight and be gone from him, forever.]

Failure, Mistake, and Secret

failure: What's your OC's greatest failure? Have they been able to move past it? Does anyone else know about it?

mistake: What's the worst mistake your OC ever made? What led to them making it? Have they been able to fix it? How have they moved on?

I'm wrapping these two into one answer, because for Maiserel, it's nearly the same thing. Their greatest failure, as they see it, was allowing their daughter to be taken - to die. They'd spent twenty years protecting her, on their own, and all it took was a moment's oversight to destroy everything.

They were arguing with their ex-spouse - not at their own home, but at their ex's, not wanting their daughter to hear them fighting. They'd ignored their daughter's signs of distress when they'd left, lost in their own problems, and when they came back, she was gone.

Nobody but Maiserel knows precisely what allowed their daughter, Amalia, to go missing. They've never forgotten, though, and they've never forgiven themself nor their ex-spouse - and given their ambition, Nemesis, they didn't quite move on, either. That leads us to...

secret: What's one secret your OC never wants anyone to know about them?

More than any of their messing about with the Discordance, one secret they truly will take to the grave is the very reason for their Discordant experimentation. At the crux of everything, they had their daughter's killer in their grasp; they heard its offer to resurrect Amalia, to bring her back, if only they would spare its life.

Maiserel did not. They did not trust it, they did not want to allow themself to hope again, they did not forgive it for what it had done, and they did not allow it to live. They exacted vengeance, and Amalia remained dead.

Could they have made another choice? Of course, but they didn't.

@uniquezombiedestiny You’re very close there! Their fear of queen bee definitely stemmed from that story, since this is where their fear of bees originally came in in Fallen London.

I’ll put this under a cut since this is technically spoilers for the Nemesis ambition.

The honey bit in that post is pretty close to why they’re afraid of bees! There’s a section in nemesis that requires you to go to a cage garden, literally a garden prison full of people in cages whom are being tortured by having their dreams and memories harvested by hell bees. All to make a type of drug honey.

When Merry came to this place they were horrified that this was the way the honey was made. And they made the decision to free as many people as they could from the cages. It was awful. In reality I kept failing the checks over and over so they kept getting injured and stung. They were utterly terrified and just desperate to save everyone they could from this fate.

And that’s why they’re scared of bees :)

as a mr cards player i agree with people saying it should lock me out of things. if we ever have a major storyline directly dealing with revolutionaries or a similar anti-bazaar faction the devs should make my job specifically harder because im a master of the bazaar while meanwhile the guys who actively went against and/or murdered one of them get bonuses in my place. it would be just as much enrichment to me as it would other people who did other ambitions i prommy

A mini pencil sketched comic about one of my Fallen London characters, Gracie, during the Nemesis ambition! She's a bit zee monster-y due to Reasons but more importantly, she's Angry! Also The comic is based off of (and contains lyrics from) the song Ship in a Bottle by Fin Argus.

I very rarely make comics but was suddenly struck by artistic muse and I'm very proud of how it turned out!
