so like ima nerd and well i asked my bestfriend/mom/ap lit teacher to send me some ap lit open ended prompts so i can practice essays by writing about stranger things abd well i defnitely did that

Choose a work of recognized literary merit in which a specific inanimate object (e.g. a seashell, a  handkerchief, a painting) is important, and write an essay in which you show how two or three of the purposes  the object serves are related to one another. Do not merely summarize the plot.

In the hit television show Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers present Will Byers’ painting for Mike Wheeler as a symbolic piece of love and future foreshadowing in order to convey how Will and Mike’s relationship is more important to the plot than Mike and El’s, contributing to the overall theme of true love conquering all, which is why the season four finale was inevitably a loss.

The conversation around the painting started with how insignificant Mike feels in El’s life and Will completely shifts his perspective. At this point we know Will is in love with Mike and can’t tell him because he’s sure that Mike loves El. The painting was to be given to someone he likes, as El put it in episode one of season four. Giving Mike the painting is a veiled love confession, due to this. Will speaks from the heart, pretending they’re El’s words, but they’re his. The heart on Mike’s shield is a clear indicator of where Will’s heart lies. Highlighting how Will’s love for Mike will play a role in the future. The bright lighting, the blush, and passion illustrates how emotional this scene is for not only Will but for Mike. This shows pure, true love. He doesn’t care if Mike reciprocates, he knows how he feels and he wouldn’t change it for a thing. Will wants to help Mike to feel better, an example of how selfless he is. When Will says things to Mike that he wants to hear, the fact they’re actually Will’s true feelings and not El’s, hints at a future relationship for the two. The painting also foreshadows more than coming relationships in the show.

The painting depicts the core four as their Dungeons and Dragons characters, facing a three-headed red dragon. As filming for season five has been happening, we know that Dustin, Lucas, Mike, and Will are all together again working as a party. This decidedly shows that the core four will be the ones to save the day, directly or indirectly. Art in general has been a recurring plot device, especially Will’s drawings, further driving home the importance of this painting in season five. As Will explains to Mike that he is specifically leading the party, the camera focuses in on him, clearly exposing the leadership quality Mike will bring back in season 5. This is further shown from the position in frames he holds, centered and in front of everyone else in group settings. Will’s words and painting have caused a shift in Mike’s development, hopefully bringing a light on his true nature and driving the plot. Also showing how deep into the plot Mike and Will’s relationship runs.

If Mike truly believes that painting was from El and they were truly in love, she would have won. Therefore, Mike and El do not have a solid foundation of true love. Mike can only say he loves El with the shove Will gives him. And a lot of this confession is based on a lie. He tells her he can fly and move mountains. She can’t do that. He tells her that he feels like his life started the day he met her in the woods. But, that was never true, he wanted to get rid of her the moment he found her in order to find Will. Most of what Mike says in his speech is false, so it’s easy to say that Mike’s love for El is also false. The moment Mike finds out Will lied to him, will actually fruition a true leader in him again. Like, we saw in seasons one and two. Will and Mike have always had their stories intertwined and since the finale will wrap up this built up arc, Mike and Will’s relationship will grow into something more.

Establishing that a prominent theme of Stranger Things is that true love conquers all, Mike and El do not fulfill that criteria, given Will Byers’ painting indicating an actual pure love for Mike. Will’s words might’ve inspired Mike, but Mike’s words did not inspire El, a clear dissonance shown through how El won’t talk to Mike after her fight with Vecna. The painting as a device also depicts foreshadowing for the core four to work together yet again and for a satisfying ending to the Mike, Will, and El love triangle.
