Sunny days are creeping back to the Midwest. I didn't really realize how much I missed daily sunshine until I didn't have it! But Amber is like having sunshine in your pocket. And this amber even more so. Chiapas Amber just waiting to be shaped and set into talismans. This is the amber of the ancient Maya. It was used in ceremony, as jewelry, in trade, and as decoration. It is from resin from an extinct tree species in the genus Hymenaec. That resin was antiseptic and protected the tree from disease and insects. It is estimated to be 22 to 28 Million years old. Just like the resin protects the tree, amber protects us. Being a product of a tree, amber grounds us. The Mayan temple called “El Castillo” is the center of the Chichen Itza archaeological site in Yucatán, Mexico. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries AD, the temple is dedicated to feathered serpent deity Kukulcan. At the spring and autumn equinox, shadows cast by the temple look like a snake crawling up its facade.

Repost from @simonnorfolkstudio Uxmal (Yucatec Mayan: Óoxmáal) is an ancient Maya city of the Classical period in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Mayan culture. Most of the city’s major construction took place while Uxmal was the capital of a Late Classic Maya state around 850-925 AD. Here photographed the “Temple of the Doves”, named by nineteenth century explorer John Lloyd Stephens for its ornate fretwork and roof combs. To Stephens, the top of the temple looked like a dovecote. The structure, once part of a quadrangle, has a richly decorated lower storey, unlike other buildings at Uxmal, and is thought to date to the earliest phase of the site. This image was used amongst others for an article on the ancient Maya in National Geographic Magazine.
