Steph, do you have any "there was only one bed" recs?
Hi Lovely!
Ahhh, not SPECIFICALLY "only one bed" but I do have a LOT of "Bed sharing" fics where the majority of them are "victims of circumstances" so in turn Share A Bed, LOL. And because I need a list for today, I'm using your list to put out the next part that doesn't have much but I did go through my MFL list to pad it out a bit. For those, I whittled down that section to fics specifically tagged with "one bed" LOL, so check that section out to get more closer to what you're looking for.
If anyone has some fics to share that are SPECIFICALLY One Bed, please do!!!! One of these days I will properly sit down and go through all my bookmarks, and then I'll filter those out from these lists.

God, John doesn't need the headache.

My most popular individual recs
I did a list like this 7 years ago and was curious whether the statistics had changed. Short answer: yes. All but one of these recs were made after that last list. I'm not sure what that means, as I would have expected older recs to get more notes just because they've been around longer. Maybe it's that there has been more thirst for fic recs in the last 7 years, or that the reblog culture on tumblr has improved.
The links here go to the recs, which in turn have links to the fics.
Radioactive Trees in a Red Forest by maribor_petrichor (280K, E, Johnlock)
He Was A Friend of Mine by SinceWhenDoYouCallMe_John (38K, E, Johnlock, John/OFC)
Hello You by weeesi (20K, NR, Johnlock)
Oh What A Night by anotherwellkeptsecret (100 panels, M, Johnlock) - Note that this has been deleted from AO3 but the link to the pages on tumblr at the bottom of the rec still works.
A Promise Made to Be Broken by PlantsAreNeat (37K, E, Johnlock) - This was number 1 on the old list, and the only one to remain in the top 10.
(Never) Turn Your Back To The Sea by DiscordantWords (39K, M, Johnlock)
Roommates are for little people by alexxphoenix42 (69K, E, Johnlock)
A Home For Us by sussexbound (30K, M, Johnlock)
The Winter Garden by Callie4180 (31K, T, Johnlock)

Fic Rec Friday #8
Tumblr media
Hell yes, we're doing sex pollen. Where I live this is a sunny and spring-like day, and allergy is already looming even though it's technically still very winter.
I adore sex pollen fics. I think it's a beautifully hilarious trope. Usually. Sometimes it's beautifully angsty, but it naturally lends itself to genuinely fun times.
One of the finest sex pollen fics I've read is
ancientreader: An atypical mating encounter, facilitated by gavur spores, between members of the species H. sapiens
Fandom: Shetland
Pairing: would you believe there's actually none. The characters are Jimmy Perez and Duncan Hunter
Rating: not rated
Okay, so you may find it helpful to have read a sex pollen fic or two with actual sex happening before you read this, because it's a take on the trope that has moved past sexytimes and into an alien scientist POV of applying certain spores on humans. It's a quick and funny read and well worth your time, promise, even if there's no delicious Jimmy/Duncan old man yaoi. Being funny in writing is bloody difficult, but this author can certainly pull that off.

Wednesday Reading Meme: Bathroom Grinding Edition
Sadly, "bathroom grinding" isn't half so naughty as it sounds.  Whatever the remodelers are doing downstairs, it sounds like they're vibrating the whole damn room apart.  But!  We're three days in and they've been consistently on time, our project manager has been communicative, and (to my admittedly untrained eye) they appear to be doing excellent work.  And they've been super courteous about wearing masks, too.  So really, I can't complain. What I've just finished reading Angels & Insects, by A.S. Byatt.  Confession time: I noped out about a third of the way through The Conjugial Angel.  There was some interesting cultural examination of the various social forces that gave rise to spiritualism (and the ways it allowed women of a certain age/lack of marital status to participate in society in a culturally-sanctioned way), but the farcical characters and lack of anything resembling a plot just Did Not Do It for me, especially when combined with Byatt's heavily-Victorian-esque writing style.  It didn't even have Morpho Eugenia's implied-incest subplot to add spice.   The Trouble With Peace, by Joe Abercrombie.  I forgot to write about this last week because I didn't think about audiobooks, and also because I'd been taking a bit of a break from it.  Joe Abercrombie is absolutely masterful at that style of writing where the bulk of the story involves setting up all the individual characters and their histories, connections, abilities, and motivations (overt and covert)—and then, in the third act, flicking one of the dominoes and watching everything fall.  It's satisfying as heck in the end, but can sometimes be a little long in the windup.  Still, Peace definitely fulfills its promises, and ends on that perfect kind of cliffhanger that I both kicking myself for not seeing coming and absolutely get why I didn't see it coming.  Related, I note that his major themes for this trilogy include the shifting of norms in the face of new technology, the breakdown of social institutions in the wake of increasing wealth stratification, and the dangers of fanaticism directly related to increasing polarization—definitely none of which have any resonance with current events whatsoever.  Definitely looking forward to the third book, and (at the risk of repeating myself) Steven Pacey continues to do an absolutely phenomenal job performing these books. What I'm currently reading One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich, by Aleksander Solzhenitsyn.  Straightforward almost to a fault, I'm not sure I have a whole lot to say about the story yet.  I get that it was a huge deal in its time, since it was one of the first truly honest portrayals of life in a Soviet gulag that was allowed to be published, but given that my previous exposure to Solzhenitsyn had been in the context of his more philosophical work, I guess I was expecting a little more philosophizing?  Still, there's some reflection around the edges; I note the recurring theme of "the guards are just as trapped in their roles as the prisoners are in theirs, and subject to many of the same privations", which feels very Russian.  Bureaucracy dehumanizes us all. I did note a passage in the Yevgeny Yevtushenko's foreword where he talks of Solzhenitsyn's disdainful attitude towards liberals, artists, and the intelligentsia, as none of their ideals or pretensions are of any use in the camps.  He goes on to note that without the aid of the intelligentsia, who rallied under its banner, Ivan Denisovich would likely never have been published, but appears to dismiss this as a "complicated relationship" without going much further into it.  Which struck me as more than a little odd; presumably, Solzhenitsyn had some artistic pretensions—you don't generally write a book, otherwise!—even if it was only to portray harsh realities that had been hidden from the general public.  I wonder if this is a Soviet cultural thing, wanting to prove Solzhenitsyn's bona fides at writing working-class characters by separating him out from the pretentious elites?  I should ask Ksenia about it. Gideon the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir.  I nabbed this audiobook entirely on the basis of some chatter about it in my writing group, and so far it hasn't lead me astray—I've only really listened to the first sequence and a bit of the following backstory, but I really like the two major characters we've introduced so far.  (I'm not sure you're supposed to like Harrowhawk, but given that her name is the title of the second book, I don't think you're supposed to not like her.  And I admire her absolute ruthlessness.)  I admit that I'm a little concerned about the extensive Dramatis Personae listed at the start of the book—I have a mixed track record with high fantasy/sci-fi stories with large casts that I often lose track of—but if the book can keep up the strength of Gideon's voice, that'll do a lot to keep my interest. What I plan to read next Still looking forward to Tender Morsels!  After that, it occurs to me that I have the sequel to Naomi Novik's Uprooted, which I enjoyed immensely, sitting on my to-be-read pile...we'll see! Fanfiction Spotlight ancientreader's "Riddle Me This, Mr. Holmes" is a complete delight, both in its concept and in its execution.   Watson, traveling to visit family but concerned about his friend and lover's somewhat fragile mental health, takes to sending him lines of a riddle via telegram and urchin-enacted charade each day.  It's precisely the sort of thing you could see Watson doing for Holmes (no matter how you view their relationship); understated, thoughtful, and introducing just that little bit of extra chaos into the buttoned-up detective's life.  I was completely and utterly charmed, all the more so by their banter-via-telegram once Holmes cottons on.

KANSAS IS SENDING AN INDIGENOUS LESBIAN TO CONGRESS I AM PROUD IN A WAY I SO RARELY GET TO BE ABOUT KANSAS.
Kansas did really good! I am so excited! I celebrated this morning by watching one of her MMA victories. :-D

Flipped the House, a few governorships, passed #4 in Florida which is a whoooooooole lot of re-enfranchised African Americans we're talking about -- yeah, not the worst possible day.
I’m so pleased about Florida’s restoration of voting rights! And Florida also passed a measure allowing retroactive application of criminal justice reforms! And Colorado got rid of slave prison labor, and Louisiana got rid of a Jim Crow jury law! And Massachusetts protected trans rights!
We were mostly fighting a defensive battle in Oregon this round, but we won those: we got to keep our sanctuary law and our abortion rights, as well as our governor, hooray! These were all things I had been very stressed about.
We didn’t make our stretch goals (damn, but it would have been fine to flip the Senate!), but there is a lot to celebrate this morning.

ancientreader replied to your post: Hey, IR Tumblr! Here’s a question. I need a 500...
Must it be from AJ? Because I would pick the passage where Breq loses her leg & when she’s rescued her team asks whether she was trying to sing.
It doesn’t have to be from AJ--the composer suggested something from AJ and I think that’s a good suggestion. I could consider the scene where Breq loses her leg--the one thing, though, is that I’m thinking I want a scene with dialogue, since what I’m trying to, um, fake I guess, what the samples are supposed to show, is my work as an opera librettist. Granted, large swathes of the trilogy that aren’t dialogues could easily be arias....

Hello. I have a specific enquiry. I suspect there is nothing that fits the bill but I thought I’d ask the fount of all knowledge. Do you know of any fics where Sherlock or John has a bad neck or back? Either through injury or chronic illness. I’ve checked out the sick fic lists and done a search on AO3. So if it exists it’s likely not obvious. I’ve read the fantastic Scar Tissue by JBaillier. Owing to some personal issues I’d really like to read some more in similar vein. Thank you so much.
Reply: First of all, here is the one you mention, in case others don't know it:
Scar Tissue by 7PercentSolution, J_Baillier (192K, M, Johnlock) Part of a longer AU doctors series, Sherlock breaks a bone in his neck, necessitating a long recovery.
These are 3 I've found in my bookmarks that are closest to your request:
Breakable Not Broken series by MissDavis (227K, E, Johnlock) John is paraplegic after a fall.
The Ground Beneath Your Feet by Chryse (68K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock has a back injury from being tortured in Serbia.
Care and Companionship series by elldotsee, J_Baillier (209K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock is tetraplegic following a car accident.
Then I have these which are somewhat related:
The Beginning of Knowledge by ancientreader (106K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock has post-polio syndrome.
On Pins and Needles series by J_Baillier (588K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock has Guillain-Barré syndrome.

@ancientreader replied to your photo: I happened upon this book at work yesterday. I...
I read it too, also decades ago, and also remember not a damn thing about it. I think it might reflect a particular literary sensibility that doesn’t – oh, say, sparkle enough? But it’s late and I’m tired and that doesn’t really get at what I want to say, and also may well be unjust given I don’t remember the book to begin with.
No, it doesn’t sparkle. It seems to fall in that category of post-war women’s fiction that prides itself on its drabness. Barbara Pym, Sylvia Townsend-Warner, Anita Brookner et al. What I like about that crowd is, in the quest to be understated, they all make great use of dialogue. Here’s a bit I liked from Ingalls (on the subject of strong coffee):
“I don’t know why it doesn’t have any effect on you. I love it, but two cups makes me feel dizzy. And like my scalp might suddenly rise up and fly away. Then there’s something over here--here, is that where the liver is?” “Dorothy, that’s where the imagination is.”
I like this joke, but I love that she doesn’t ruin it with prose. If I was trying to write this same gag, I’m sure I’d be tempted to put something like “she said, holding her hand against her side” in the emdashes. But she doesn’t, and you certainly don’t need it to get what’s happening. BUT, I will say against this book, that there is something very... for lack of a better phrase, very ‘70s about it. ‘Yes, my depressed housewife is going to have sex with this fish monster in the living room, AND the kitchen, AND the bathtub, also he thinks she’s prettiest in her nightie with her hair a mess’. Not that I’m not here for it, but it is a little Fear of Flying/erotica-as-unnuanced-wish-fulfillment.

I’ve read like almost all the angsty stucky fics (i’ve been doing this for years), so I just want to know if there’s anything new? Thank you so much.
Hello there!
(1) You've read almost ALL the angsty Stucky fics out there? HOW? I've been diligently working on that goal for years and I'm nowhere near close to achieving it (also it's kind of a moving target, so you know...). Do you ever sleep? Eat? 😜 (2) How new is 'new'? Any particular preferences? What level of angst are we talking here? Give me all the information, please, so I can find you the perfect fic!
Anyway, as always, I tried my best. Here we go:
Tumblr media
All of these are fics that were either completed in 2022 or are so fresh out of the oven, they are currently being posted.
Prisoner One by ancientreader | E, 134K
Author's summary: Captain Steve Rogers is assigned to evaluate the security arrangements for an unusually dangerous prisoner. Of course, nothing is what it seems.
A truly original AU in which almost everything is the same: Steve is Captain America, Bucky is the Winter Soldier, they were both born in the 1910s & grew up in Brooklyn. Everything is the same, well, except for the fact that they never knew each other before the war. What happens when they both meet for the first time in the 21st Century, where everyone has an agenda and seemingly no one can be trusted? This is one of those fics that, even while your heart is hurting for the characters, makes you squeal with delight because it is so full of smart ideas, little details, and bits of characterization that subvert both canon and fanon interpretations.
You are here by dharmashark | M, 22K
Author's summary: Did he mean to—did Steve know, during that long march back from Azzano, that he slept the whole night with a hand through the open neckline of Bucky’s shirt? Each time Bucky woke, heart racing, he felt that heavy, certain weight against his chest and remembered who he was, and where he was supposed to be.
Bucky wanders between DC and Bucharest trying to understand himself, outrun his ghosts, and hide Steve from both. Steve won’t let him. And certain ghosts won’t let up.
A "classic" post-TWS Recovery/Up All Night to Get Bucky fic--and I mean that in the BEST way possible. Gorgeous writing, intense emotions, and a great understanding of the characters and their dynamic. The first part in particular floored me in a way that I didn't think could still happen to me after reading millions of words of Stucky fanfic. This story looked me in the eye and said "oh, so you think you've seen everything? You think you've become immune? Well, watch me as I tear your heart right out of your chest." To be fair, it then proceeded to slowly, gently put it back in again.
then a small thing happened by BeaArthurPendragon | E, 41K
Author's summary: After a Russian bomb in Ukraine ends combat photographer Bucky Barnes’ career several decades ahead of schedule, he returns to the lake house he hasn’t visited since his parents died to put the pieces back together over the long, lonely winter. He’s got no idea what his life is supposed to look like now that he’s not constantly on the move and facing danger every day, but an unexpected friendship with his elderly neighbor—and then her astronaut son—leads to the kind of connection he never thought he’d get to have.
Bea is one of my top 3 all-time favorite writers for this ship and a self-described "peddler of smut and hard-won joy", and that's exactly it. Like all of her works, this is a smart, mature and empathicly written story about people who've endured horrific things, but who've persisted and kept a tight grip on their own humanity even in the face of unspeakable atrocities. It's also funny, and tender, and hot. An incredibly satisfying read that reminds you to never lose your sense of wonder in the world.
Nothing Said by theemdash | M, 8K
Author's summary: There’s always been another war, another reason for Steve to keep his feelings to himself and keep moving on. For all his wishes to do things differently, he never figured out how. Which is why following Fury to the moon, passing on the shield, and leaving Bucky to discover himself seemed like the right answer. When Steve gets caught in a force field surrounding a crumbling civilization, he starts to realize everything he thought was wrong.
A beautiful, introspective story about Steve's state of mind post-Endgame. So quiet and yet so intense, with a lovely, soft ending. Featuring a Steve who has to figure out himself and how to be brave enough to truly live, and a Bucky who knows him, has always known him, and ultimately helps Steve to save himself and find happiness.
WIPs
better to speak or die by emilywithoutY | M, currently 14K (Chapter 2/13 Ch), updates every Thursday & Sunday
Do you think Jonathan understood what happened that day David first stepped into his father’s court?
All James wants is to play his part well enough that his mother stops looking at him with that twist of regret in her smile.
Summers in C. are as endless and hazy as when they were kids. The only thing to break the sun-soaked monotony is the arrival of the new summer intern. While the rest of the household—and half the village—fawn over Steve Rogers’ movie star looks and understated charm, James finds him aloof and his polite interest near unbearable. But as they collide in vulnerable moments, the sparks of frustration ignite something neither has the power to stop.
Does this sound like a beautiful, passionate, sun-drenched summer romance in Italy, with great 80s period details, exquisite writing, and the bittersweet sting of childhood nostalgia? Why yes it does--and it is all that! Until it pulls out the rug from under you. A spectacularly good No-Powers AU, loosely based on Call Me By Your Name.*
*(full disclosure I beta-read this so I might be biased, but it also means that I can say with full confidence that this insanely good all the way through.)
Still Running by TessaBennet | Part 4 in  What I'm Looking For series | M, currently 16K (Chapter 5/30), updates every Friday
Author's summary: Steve Rogers is, against his wishes and intentions, still alive in the 21st century. There's aliens in New York, there's an intelligence agency in his name, there's more new faces than old ones. And Steve? He's reluctant about it, but he's going to have to try to get by. Finding his footing isn't a job he wants to tackle; but then, when's the last time he got what he wanted?
Do you want to go on a canon-compliant (currently) 290K journey of Suffering, Pining, and Pain? Here you go! This is the 4th part in the author's ongoing and awe-inspiring project of 'Let's Try to Make Sense of the MCU & Ultimately Fix It'. It's full of beautiful character insights, historical details, and original ideas to fill out the parts we didn't get to see on screen. The installments can be read as standalones, but I really recommend that you start from the beginning if you have the time & willingness to cry A WHOLE LOT.
