Year of Lists
January Books
The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride (ToB Read) *3/5 - there's an ease in the storytelling, it gives you time to luxuriate in the plot. I loved the back-and-forth, the exploration of the past and of characters who were not central to the main goings-on, but just like in life, you can trace their influence through time. Despite the writing talent, and the much promising setup and characters, I had trouble connecting to this novel; most of my joy in reading this came from the observation of McBride's craft in putting this together.
Folklorn by Angela Mi Young Hur *3.2/5 - for a minute there I really thought this would be the great Korean novel I've been looking for. Firstly: one for the great covers list. The marrying of science and folklore/superstition/oral inter-generational storytelling: chef's kiss. I wish it amounted to more than it actually did. The novel opens in dreamy language, otherworldly imagery, beautiful, beautiful world-building. It unfortunately loses its coherence and promise about 30% in. It fizzles into a concept that begs for a better storyline to hold it together. I wish the protagonist's personality amounted to more than self-wallowing in pity and self-othering. There are nuances that could have been explored so deeply; I wanted her to see herself as the wonder I saw her as. Nonetheless, there is magic here, there is familial complexity, and beauty.
Notable quote: “The first generation who come are grateful, certainly. They can endure much, swallow their pride. Their children want more—the freedom not to be grateful, indebted, and beholden.”
The Atlas Complex by Olivie Blake *3/5 - it hasn't even been long since I read this and I can't even remember the plot. Positives: Blake's writing gets better and better, clearly not in the general, book-making sense, but in the pleasant-to-read, I-love-spending-time-with-your-words way. I did enjoy the reading of this, I just don't think this was written because the story was there, but rather, because the trilogy needed to end. I love the characters and I love the illustrations and the elements that make Atlas so exciting: magic, ambition, a sentient, secret, ancient library full of the deepest, darkest knowledge of the world - the dark academia of it all. Better luck with the prequel. We're suckers for it either way.
The Premonition by Banana Yoshimoto *5/5 - a perfect little dream - I LOVE BANANA / Mrs Caliban by Rachel Ingalls *5/5 - superb.
Both of these are 5 stars partially because they're novellas. They're dreamy and otherworldly, tackling their specific subject-matters with dexterity. Mrs Caliban is worth an afternoon, especially for fans of The Shape of Water.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke *4.7/5 - boy oh boy was this a surprise. I don't have much to say, THIS.IS.INCREDIBLE. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, and perhaps wouldn't be mine if it was written by another author. I read this in a day.
The Dark Tower: The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King (audiobook) *4/5 - this is a reread, first read-through was a physical copy; I'm listening to the series now because I'd missed that world. The narrator for this one is better than the first and his work is only improving. By the end of this one you can tell this is a narrator who truly understands King's writing, with all its humour and intricacies.
The Green Mile by Stephen King *4.7/5 - it's as good as you think it is, as good as everyone says it is. In case it wasn't clear I LOVE STEPHEN KING.

August 2022 Book Club Picks
Tumblr media
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman: It all began with a man killing himself after driving a stolen car into a ditch. That’s what the narrator of this story remembers, having returned to his quiet hometown in Sussex to attend a funeral. And with that man’s death, something dark was unleashed. Something that drew the narrator’s neighbors - Lettie Hempstock and her enigmatic mother and grandmother - to him, swearing to protect him from the evil that was about to descend upon him. Even though the narrator hasn’t thought about the Hempstocks in years, he begins to remember, with perfect clarity, the terrible things that followed, that no child should ever have had to endure.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: Alice, bored and sleepy and longing for something interesting to happen, seems to get her wish when she spies a white rabbit in a waistcoat scurry by, looking at a giant pocket-watch and fretting about being late. What follows is the classic story of a young girl wandering through the colorful and ridiculous world of charming and utterly mad inhabitants, an enduring testament to the power of youthful imagination.
Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center by bell hooks: The field of feminism can be thorny, and often muddled by short-shortsightedness and prejudices from all sides. In this book, hooks challenges some long-held beliefs that marginalize women of color and working class women, often left out of feminist activism because of these prejudices. (Also I should definitely have read Ain’t I A Woman first, because this builds on a lot of points expressed there first, I just didn’t think about it, oops)
Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook: Kim is convinced that her world will truly open up once she starts college. After acing her exams and convincing her traditional mother that college is a good idea, she’s ready to find solace from the constant political upheaval common in South Korea’s Fifth Regime and the protests against it. When she’s invited to join an extracurricular book club, Kim’s excitement over potential discussions of The Scarlet Letter and Hamlet quickly dissolve when she learns that the club is devoted to reading and distributing censored or banned Western books and media. And as the regime tightens its grip and begins to close in on Kim’s book club, she and her newfound friends must fight to protect their right to free information.
Mrs. Caliban by Rachel Ingalls: Dorothy lives a quiet, lonely life in the suburbs. Her husband is spending more and more time at work. Her one friend is caught up in the turmoil of her own life. She thinks she can handle it, that it’s nothing she can’t endure, until she hears about a dangerous monster breaking out of a local research institute...and turns around to find that exact monster standing in her kitchen. But she soon learns, like much in her life, there’s more to this mysterious monster than anyone ever realized.

The Great Crusade Café | Concept Design
You can just watch the video which has a detailed description as well as the tour. I used Chinese dubbing with English subtitles, so make sure you have the subtitles turned on while watching.
CAFÉ FOR ASTARTES! | Fan Idle Game: The Great Crusade Café Concept Design
youtube
The Great Crusade Café
Productivity Tool& Idle Game Fanart Project (Concept Design Only)
Concept design: Gameplay
[Intro & Setting]
When a user first opens the web page, the name The Great Crusade Café will appear. After clicking, you can start by naming the café owner, which is the role you will play.
Then, as the owner, you will be asked to choose the tasks you want to undertake in reality for today. The default name here is John.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The purpose of this web page is to provide users with a leisurely and comfortable café white noise. It allows you to enjoy such an atmosphere whether you are reading or translating WH novels. Additionally, café-themed white noise has been proven by studies to increase efficiency for people. Therefore, you can also use it while working or painting miniature models.
Tumblr media
After setting a task, you can officially enter the management of the café within the game. Don't worry, you can change the current task being undertaken at any time, just below the time displayed in the top right corner. And if you feel that the display of time might make you anxious, you can also turn it off in the settings.
[Coffee System]
Tumblr media
After today's business starts, you can choose to make a cup of coffee for yourself first. By clicking on the coffee cup under the coffee machine, you can make a cup of your favorite drink for yourself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recaff is precisely the coffee beverage commonly found in the "Siege of Terra" series of novels. And various other drinks also have their unique origins.
After deciding which type of coffee to make, we can choose options like the milk to use based on our personal preference.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This will result in a steaming hot cup of coffee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After each cup of coffee is made, hovering the mouse over the coffee cup icon will start a 2-hour timer. However, after one hour, the steam on the coffee cup will disappear. And when the timer finally reaches zero, you will know that two hours have passed. Setting a 2-hour timer aligns with the time unit of the Pomodoro Technique. If you want to use the web page as an efficiency tool, you can make good use of this feature.
[Character Visiting]
Tumblr media
After making a cup of coffee for yourself, naturally, various characters will be attracted to the café and its aroma. They usually greet you directly and place their orders. But sometimes, you will need to guess their preferences based on the characters' personalities. If you have read many related novels, you will have a unique advantage in this aspect.
For example, people from Caliban would drink black tea. Commanders stationed on Terra, on the other hand, prefer bitter coffee, among other things. Additionally, some special drink recipes need to be purchased or unlocked through gifts from characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After fulfilling the characters' needs, their Trust will increase.
Subsequently, they often spend some time in the café, and during this period, you can engage in conversation with them. As the Trust increases, the topics they bring up will also vary.
For instance, Loken might talk to you about Mr. Sindermann's lectures, while Argel Tal could bring up his friend Khârn. Ahriman might mention that the café was recommended to him by his human friend Gaumon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This often unlocks more characters. After all, the café's reputation is always spread by word of mouth among friends.
And some rarer characters, I mean, like a Primarch, might require the trust of everyone in the legion.
Tumblr media
After increasing trust levels, besides more conversations and characters, there will also be an important matter.
Tumblr media
Once trust levels reach their peak, characters will give you a variety of gifts, including decorative items. For example, members of the Thousand Sons always like to give you various books, regardless of whether you can understand them or not.
But you can use some of them as decorations inside the café.
This can sometimes be key to unlocking rare characters. Of course, you can also purchase various decorations and drink recipes at any time from the itinerant merchant in the upper left corner of the screen.
And if you complete the current task setting and change the task, most of the characters present will express encouragement and approval towards you.
Tumblr media
[Bulletin Board & Character Book]
Each character stays for a different amount of time. Many of them are very busy with numerous affairs. However, you can find clues of their visits on the bulletin board.
Almost every customer who has visited the café leaves something behind on this bulletin board. For example, stickers, messages, or even advertisements.
Tumblr media
Hovering the mouse over specific items will display detailed explanations and descriptions.
Tumblr media
You can also find information about the visitors in the customer notes, where all guest information is recorded.
However, characters that have not yet been unlocked will be displayed as "unsigned".
[Weather System]
Additionally, some sufficiently important characters, if they are very satisfied with your café, they will grant you access rights.
This privilege allows you to open cafés in different areas, such as on battleships, Terra, the Hive cities, and various other places.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As time passes, the ambient light in the café will also change.
Tumblr media
This also means that some special characters will only be unlocked at specific times. If you go from noon to night, you can see the nighttime view of the Hive city outside the window. As time progresses from afternoon to night, you can see the nighttime view of the Hive city from the window. And when midnight arrives, the starry sea above the deck will leave you in awe. In the central area of Terra, mornings always face the unchanging snowy mountains.
[Vinyl Records Player]
While running the café, you can always spin your vinyl records. This allows you to change the background music and even import your own favorite tracks. If you don't like the ambient chatter or the sounds of the coffee machine and cups, you can also turn them off here.
Tumblr media
The above is a brief instruction for using "The Great Crusade Café".
The project is a purely conceptual design. As Games Workshop does not allow fanart creators to engage in programming or development. It is currently only presented in this form to everyone. It's worth mentioning that this design was inspired by a series of excellent projects, including VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk, I Miss My Cafe, and Neko Atsume, etc. That's also why I chose to use a pixel art style in the project.
At the same time, I'd like to thank the pixel art artists who collaborated with me. Without you, this demo video wouldn't have been possible.
Finally, thank you for watching. If you enjoy research and artistic creations related to the Warhammer theme, feel free to follow my Youtube channel and X.
May your day always start with a great cup of coffee : )

the more i think about the ‘thursday is widdershins-miranda is mrs. widdershins’ theory, the more i go ‘hmm’ at it, especially when looking at the miranda is mrs. widdershins angle of the theory.
in tgg, the baudelaires find a family photo of the widdershins. it’s an old photo. and it’s crumple, so no doubt it took damage. but there wasn’t much damage done, for the baudelaires recognize the hook-handed man as a teenager, a younger captain widdershins, and a baby fiona.
it’s weird to bring something else up, but it connects to this i swear. i remembered watching a film several years back, miss pettigrew lives for a day. at the beginning of the film, someone sees the titular miss pettigrew from afar for like, a minute or less, and at night (pretty sure it was night?). the character shows up again, and when meeting miss pettigrew again she was more or less ‘i’m pretty sure we met before i can’t forget a face’, and she eventually recalls where she saw miss pettigrew before as the film goes on.
and let me tell you that part of the film stuck to me because the conditions, despite being ripe to pretty much forget a face, never happened. so, it stands to me that the baudelaires, when having the theory in mind, could have eventually recognize miranda as mrs. widdershins after thinking of her as someone with a familiar face who shares a story of their spouse dying of a manatee accident had things in the end not happened that lead to the end.
there is the possibility the baudelaires could have truly forgotten what mrs. widdershins look like. everything they went through/learned in tpp was so much she got process out of their mind, and considering the exposure to the island, she could look very different from herself from the last ~16 years, so anything they could have vaguely remember could be gone. but if on the possibility they could have vaguely remember her as a familiar face, could the island exposure change a person look that much alongside the aging?
not sure how to end this post, but i had to get this thought out.
