Gelebor reading the Falmer stone for us.
For the first time (I suppose), here's Gelebor speaking in his own mother tongue.
----------
I did my best with the UESP wiki to put commas and periods, and this was the third of fourth attempt. Each attempt is unique, so in the others, he said "t" instead of "th" on one word, and sadly one had to be thrown because he said "arcaten" instead of "arcten".

Once again, I was drinking cheap wine and staring at Calcelmo’s Stone when I read and re-read this phrase:
Nu frey sepa sye arcta varlor denai, cullei noue staneia.
For those of you who are sane and don’t have the translation memorized, here it is:
We only request you partake of the symbol of our bond, the fruit of the stones around us.
As I’ve gone over in a previous NCGttFT, Nu is of course “we”, and in another I glanced on arcta, which shares a common root with the previously used arcten, which means “thanks”. And Imperial Library states that cullei noue staneia means “fruit of our stones” and I’m running with that.
Which means so far, this is the word-for-word translation:
[We] frey sepa [you (objective)] [thanks] varlor denai, [fruit our stones]
Not exactly the most imaginative grammar for conlang, but beggars can’t be choosers here.
From here, we can extrapolate that frey means “only”, but only in the context of humility or simplicity. You wouldn’t use frey to say you’re the only one, but you could use it to say you’re only human. If that makes sense. We can also assume that sepa here means “request/ask”, because again, I don’t think Bethesda did anything crazy with the grammar if the previous phrases on the Stone are of any indication.
And for the sake of simplicity, I’m also going to assume that arca here can also mean something akin to thanksgiving, ie an expression of gratitude.
So!
[We] [humbly] [ask] [you (objective)] [express your thanks] varlor denai, [fruit our stones].
And already we’re seeing a more.. kind of condescending take on this phrase. If you ask me, this is one of the subtle phrases that speak volumes on the Dwarven-Falmer alliance, but again: Non Canon.
Now we’re left with Varlor Denai, which is supposed to convey “[partake in] the symbol of our bond”. Dena in Ayleidoon simply means “treaty”, which could be the closest term the Falmer had to an oath, promise, a partaking of a union, so on and so forth. So we’ll roll with that. That leaves only Varlor now, which so far only seems to share a root with Varla, meaning “star” in Ayleidoon. I’m chalking this up to happy coincidence. Interestingly, even the Tolkein dictionary on which Bethesda has historically leaned on came up empty for varlon; the closest we get is varne, which means ”protection” or “brown”.
And there is the Symbol, no doubt laden with meaning and promise and what have you. Varlor, by my wild conjecture anyway, means to perform an action laden with symbolic meaning. In the context of the phrase on the Stone, that action is to be performed on the stone-fruit that would doom the Snow Elves to slavery.
And now we’ve gone from here:
Nu frey sepa sye arcta varlor denai, cullei noue staneia.
To here (with some flair):
We humbly ask that you thankfully participate in oath-binding, with the fruit of the stones around us.
... Which sounds a little more insidious I think.

a chance encounter
(inktober day 19! featuring the return of a certain falmer mage, and her adventures after tazril’s sudden disappearence... i had to take some liberties with falmeris, like i had to dwemeris. i just wish these funky elves had fully fleshed out, translatable languages :( )
Of all the places Eltys imagined her journey would take her, traveling side-by-side with a human to find the bow of Auri-El himself wasn’t somewhere she imagined.
She told Serana her name was Tys, that she was an Altmer, and that she just didn’t get out much - hence her skin. And to her immense surprise, Serana believed her!
Well.
Not so much as ‘believe’ but more ‘didn’t prod’.
For that, Eltys was grateful.
They were trudging along in some rank cave. The Elder Scrolls had pointed them here, showed this as the location of Auri-El’s bow, and yet there were no signs of any sort of sentient life, but then -
A lit basin, there, in the distance. “Someone’s here,” Eltys whispered, instinctually preparing a spell. Frost coated her fingertips as she and Serana approached. Sure enough, there was a figure, and a -
A shrine. A shrine to Auri-El.
Eltys dispelled her magic with a quiet, sharp intake of breath. The figure heard this, and said - with a voice, an accent she hadn’t heard in thousands of years -
“Come forward. You have nothing to fear here.”
Serana and Eltys moved closer to the figure, close enough to make out details. Sure enough, he had the same pale skin, the same snow-colored hair, the same icy eyes, and - Auri-El preserve her, he was wearing the traditional armor, and -
“What’s that?” Serana eyed the shrine, suspicious as always. “I can feel some sort of power from it...”
The Falmer smiled, and Eltys sank back further into her hood. “I am Knight-Paladin Gelebor. Welcome to the Great Chantry of Auri-El.”
“This cave is a temple to Auriel?” Serana glanced to Eltys with an ‘I-Told-You-So’ smile, though it fell when she saw how... odd Tys was acting.
Then the Knight-Paladin spoke again, “Auriel, Auri-El, Alkosh, Akatosh... so many different names for the sovereign of the Snow Elves.” His voice was as warm as the sun and as clear as ice.
“...You’re a Falmer,” Tys all but whispered. Auri-El help her. Phynaster help her. Trinimac help her. Gods, please help her --
He seemed to hesitate as he turned towards her. “I ...prefer Snow Elf. The name ‘Falmer’ usually holds a negative meaning to most travelers.” His brow furrowed, just a bit. “May I ask that you take off -”
Eltys pulled back her hood with shaking hands and spoke,
“Arcten granda, Gelebor, nu nemalauta... Nu fey nema Auri-Eli -”
“I know,” Gelebor spoke quietly, a nearly watery smile on his features. “It has been long since I heard our tongue. You are welcome here. Please, sit - Tell me how you survived, if you wish, tell me what tides of fate brought you here.”
“I - I will, someday, but I’m afraid the doom of Auri-El’s influence is on a rather tight deadline.”

Non Canon Guide to the Falmer Tongue: Hecta
As I mentioned in my previous NCGttFT, hecta is an interesting word. The official translation we have for hecta in relation to the Falmer language is simply “do not [verb]”, as seen in Calcelmo’s stone:
Nu hecta sou arcten, rias nu nemalauta ge. Nu hecta sou epegandra, rias ne nemalauta ge.
Translated: “We do not desire thanks, for we do not believe in it. We do not ask for gratitude, for we do not believe in it.”
Side note: I do like how Falmeri takes the German route of forming words. Just look at how seamlessly they smash epe (”to speak”) and gandra (grace) together! It’s gorgeous!
I say this is interesting as the Ayleidoon word for hecta, which much of Falmeris shares a language with, is closer to “exile” than “do no want for”.
So naturally, I’m going to analyze this far more than Betheda ever intended.
Let’s begin with the common thread that ties all Mer-tongue together: Tolkien, the OG Elvish conlang man. Hecta appears to be lifted directly from Tolkien’s Telerin language, which means “to abandon, reject, or forsake”. The Ayleids appear to hold the Tolkien translation closer to heart with their use of the word; to be hecta in ancient Cyrodill surely meant you’ve done something to even make the flesh-crafters side eye you, and that is no small feat.
Unless, of course, hecta carried a very similar tone in Falmeri, and the stone translation is simply the best Tamrielic has to offer. The English tongue still doesn’t have a suitable translation for toska, after all, and so with that in mind the Dwemer slab takes on a more interesting glean.
It’s one thing to say “we do not desire your thanks”. It’s a whole other to say “we will not accept your thanks”, or even “we abandon entirely your gratitude”.
Simply put, words of gratitude or grace were outright refused. Not politely declined, but something that wasn’t even an option because gratitude was so incompatible and wrong to the Dwemer. They not only denied whatever thanks the Falmer had, but did so with disgust. Hecta is on par with “leave, and never come back”, and so the Falmer were told to never say thanks, and to perish any thought that it would ever be enough.
Simply because the Deep Elves did not believe in such sentiment.
And this, at least to me, speaks volumes, not only for Dwemer culture, but for the culture of the ancient Falmer.
