Now I’m having NitW feelings and need to say my piece. So: NitW is a good game that I have fond memories of, but where the gameplay and ending didn’t hit strongly for me, and where no character’s specific angst ever aligned quite closely enough with mine to really attach me to it. HOWEVER: there is a free companion game to it called Lost Constellation. It’s a ~half hour long game framed as a folk story about an astronomer going into a dangerous forest to look for a lost star, which is only visible on the longest night of the year. Thematically, it’s about the things, good and bad and otherwise, that we devote ourselves to, and how we live with what that devotion means for us and the rest of our lives. I've replayed it at least a dozen times. The ending music still makes me tear up. It has all the strengths of the writing in the main game, but in a setting and story that just hits closer to home for me. Whether or not you’ve played NitW, if anything about that sounds interesting or appealing, I can’t recommend it enough.

-i’m thinking about how alice's happiness in this ending depends on deciding for herself that lorina moved on with her life and would in turn forgive alice for moving on with her own life. she needs that guarantee. because as she’s said, she feels a responsibility to *something*, and a feeling of “i must not become happy”... she needs to imagine her sister allowing her to be happy, giving her permission to be happy. 

-"im going to pretend im being actively kept from seeing her cause she lives far away" and this are neck in neck for "REALLY REALLY CLOSE TO THE ROOT CAUSE". lorina is chilling and partying in the golden land, guys, its fine,

-also. i wonder if gowland has been an outsider’s guide before tbh? he seems to know a lot about the subject but speaks in a "you guys-" sort of way so i dont think its his own experience. maybe the previous outsider he met went home at the end...

-or, HUGE brain theory: baby gowland was baby blood's guide. im sure this ones definitely impossible im just saying words right now but it explains why blood knows gowland's deadname and why gowland knows so much about being a guide . but im just saying words i KNOW it cant have happened [telling myself not to get attatched to this one]

-i think the talk below is directly a talk about "escapist fiction enjoyment vs cruel reality". its been a loooong time but its bringing to mind the nitw "just shapes" bit, about mae realizing her favorite characters werent real and meaningless in her depressed state- an alice that chooses to fully throw herself into reality won’t give meaning to a pleasant dream. and he’s almost correct, but not quite- she chooses to wave it away as a dream in the truth ending not because it seems less important to her in comparison, but because she can’t handle that real live people were nice to her of their own free will.

-GHHHGHH SOMEBODY MAKE THIS CHOICE FOR ME SO I CAN NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. i REALLY wish we'd gotten this spelled out so clearly in blood route, actually, it would have made his ending click into thematic place really well (begging for the choice to be taken away from her -> him pressuring her into marriage -> she got her wish, yknow?)

-alice has been unearthing some big future-memories, but she does inevitably hit a point where she can no longer access certain things. she has the emotions all there, but the events they relate to are locked away. OOF. why DOES she feel the need (but not the want) to go home, indeed...

-btw i paid extra attention this time- its still a bit confusing for me, but i BELIEVE her ‘current’ self refers to her repressed/regressed self, and her ‘present’ self is the self that’s been through all of her experiences. obviously this is a matter of translation and i cant speak for the original feeling, but i do like that its ‘current’ and ‘present’ and not ‘past’ and ‘future’.... like, both of these words express being in the here and now. she’s all of them.

-YOU DONT EVEN HAVE ANYBODY WAITING FOR YOU, RIGHT? gowland oh my god. you got it more than you’ll ever know.

-i’m talking about this a lot in terms of what gowland does for alice, emotionally, because it’s her POV, but i think its also important to point out that he’s really attached to her and gains a lot from her!!! he enjoys her personality and is really distressed at the idea that she thinks its all a dream. the idea of “well id never really date you but if im in a zone where its all fake and my consequences don’t matter..... then, okay” is particularly distressing to him, and i totally understand why. he was having a rough time those last few events and i totally empathized ;o;

Okay okay okay, so here's the short of it.

I own a very large bundle of games and haven't explored much of it at all. It's where I played NitW from for instance but that's "roughly" all I've explored.

I went browsing it with the intent of just 'starting' a ton of games and making a short post on em all for fun until I found the motivation to start a serious game for the blog- still plan to do that!- but I IMMEDIATELY had to stop for this one!

UNDERHERO IS SICK!?!?!

I have NEVER heard of this one!

(Now I intended to post a song from the game here as BGM to the post and an example of what's going on in the game but I realized I don't own the OST and can't post a video since I'm using a video in this post already so just check out a random song like Ghost Party which I found by looking at their bandcamp, it's nice stuff)

It's got a fun bit of humor going for it that was willing to be more "This isn't rated E" than I expected lol. That's on me, I really haven't been playing a lot of indie games beyond ridiculously large ones people shout at me to try (which often clearly and immediately say "This game is violent" "This game is 100% cheery" or what not) but yeah, there's some blood from a murder that I did in the intro cutscene.

But yeah it's got this charming humor to it, spent the bulk of my first hour just talking with people and enjoying the little bits here and there.

You're some minion for a big bad in a world where big bads rise and fall to new heroes every other week- it's normal and expected and kinda just the run of the mill of things.

But you kill a hero and their mythical talking weapon says it's your job to do the dead hero's work now and you're more or less just a push over who does what you're told so you're down (kinda, the promise of money helps).

Our boss is fun.

And he sends us out to return the hero's gems (and kills our witness). I'm lead to believe he's setting things up so a new hero can come, I mean he releases the princess too? It feels like some "The world runs like this, and I'm part of the clockwork around here!" deals which is fun in its own way (especially since he seems wild enough for this to be some eccentric plan?).

BUT WHO CARES ABOUT ANY OF THAT (I jest)

But seriously, there's more to the game than some charm- and if that was all the game had I probably wouldn't be talking about it because the beginning wasn't like 900% geared to my interests charm, it was just 'good charm'.

WHAT HAS ME INTERESTED IS THIS GAMEPLAY HOLY HECK!!!!

It's a hybrid of a lot of neat ideas and feels so GOOD!

Strangely, despite being so different, it scratches my paper mario itch most of all.

It somehow 'feels' like I'm playing that old timed hit gameplay, but with enough new and unique combinations of mechanics on top that it also doesn't feel remotely boring or samey as that?

Like, it feels entirely different, yet it scratches THAT itch in particular.

I mean look at this level up and tell me that doesn't scream Paper Mario lol.

To quickly run down some of the ideas going on in combat (this far in at least):

The game page describes it as a turn based RPG without the turns and they are right about that.

Instead you have stamina and dodging enemy attacks speeds up your stamina regen.

On top of that you can block and parry instead of dodging, there is bribery to skip fights, there's talking to enemies to get tips, it's neat from the word go to be honest.

So I spent an hour in Underhero, which is about how long I planned on playing each of the games in this 'rampage of my backlog' but uh.

I think we're one game in and we found a winner?

Like I think I might just play this through to completion as my next game lol.

It's REALLY good.

I've only just gotten to the first dungeon and saved the game and I'm already thinking of just cutting this expedition through my backlog short with a surprise home run.

Regardless of what *I* do, I say give Underhero a look. This game is SICK. It's 15 bucks on itch.io and isn't too hard to find.

I think it's pretty safe to say we'll be seeing more of this on the blog. Instead of making my next game be something predictable like the next Yakuza or a DQ game, maybe I'll toss this indie game I'd never heard of to the top of the list :P

It's so cool to hear you played Celeste haha, it's pastel shadeless artstyle reminded me of yours sometimes, and overall seems like a game you would enjoy Got any favorite chapter?

Ooooh that’s actually a pretty tough one cause honestly I absolutely adore all of the chapters aside from the celestial resort.

But if I had to say it’d probably have to be Chapter 6, reflection. It nails everything from the atmosphere to the storytelling and music, and the overall themes this chapter tackles hit really close to home for me. 

The Badeline fight section actually got me chills. Like, I’d never been as invested in a story as this since nitw and undertale, and that’s saying something considering these two are among my favorite videogames of all times

Chapter 2 (Old site) and Chapter 7 (The summit) come pretty close to being my favorites as well, because they comes with amazing music and visuals, too. And there’s nothing more motivating than the progressive countdown of the checkpoint flags in the final area

Thanks to working from home nowadays, I had a lot of time to overthink this, lol. It was fun at least! In no particular order:

1) Furiosa (Mad Max: Fury Road) Icon.

2) Aeryn Sun (Farscape) A lot of what I love in Furiosa, expanded through a TV show. What can I say, I love a no-nonsense badass with an ‘all I thought I could be is X, but what if I could be more?’ character arc.

3) Molly Grue (The Last Unicorn) Speaking of which. I will always love that when Molly Grue at last meets a beautiful, ethereal unicorn, her reaction is just openly indignant and bitter. Also, holy crap the bitterness of Molly Grue has never been more relatable in these times. When millennials are finally hitting goals or milestones older generations reached in their 20s, we will all be Molly Grue, middle aged and shaking these milestones shouting ‘How dare you come to me now? Where were you when I was new?’

4) Terra (Final Fantasy VI) Okay, so seeing a female character struggling with the idea of love and discovering it through non-hetero, non-romantic means was really novel and resonated a lot for younger-me still figuring out my gay asexual self. Terra also has green hair, amazing theme music and can transform into a pink haired magic creature to wreck shit up. What’s not to love, I ask.

5) Rose Quartz (Steven Universe) Not my favourite character from SU but the most interesting. I’ve never seen a character quite like Rose, or the way we see her archetype deconstructed and her character growth revealed in a backward fashion. I find her character deeply sad, and the fact that her strange, grim death-but-not-death is how we get our protagonist in Steven ... it strikes such a melancholy note in an otherwise optimistic series and that fascinates me to no end.

6) Mae Borowski (Night in the Woods) NitW was the first time I felt really truly seen in the media I consumed. The game came to me after the worst of my uni years, but playing through Mae’s story helped me to admit/recognise that those times were Not Okay and also made me feel less alone about feeling stuck and not having my life “together”. I love this trash mammal a lot.

7) Chihiro (Spirited Away) It was really hard deciding between Studio Ghibli’s many amazing female characters but Chihiro’s character growth is so lovely and peak “emotional ghibli wholesomeness” for me.

8) Emily Fields (Pretty Little Liars) You always remember the first character you saw on TV and noticed the hints they weren’t straight and desperately hoped you weren’t reading into things and then holy shit turns they canonically ARE gay (with a side of “why do I feel so extremely invested in this??”). what a time to be alive that was

9) Miss Honey (Matilda) Matilda was such a cathartic movie for me growing up. I watched it semi-recently as a grown adult and can confirm: still cathartic. And now that I’m older I appreciate the narrative of Miss Honey’s adulthood trauma more and more. Miss Honey and her quiet kindness and bravery are also just #goals in so many ways.

10) Princess Zelda (Legend of Zelda) Specifically Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild Zelda. I’m always drawn to the mystic character in an ensemble (not that this list actually reflects that, haha), and OoT Zelda gives us not only a mystic but also a genderbending ninja hero with amazing theme music!! With BotW Zelda, it was so, so cool and exciting to see a Zelda struggle and not be innately competent. And to express bitterness and anxiety about her life. And she’s a nerd. And her story is fabulously tragic. I just ... I love herrrrrr!

your opinion on night in the woods

nitw kicked me right in the emotions several times, and still does occasionally when i get to thinking about it. it’s probably the game that’s had the most emotional impact on me in terms of story and characters.

it just like.... nitw gets it. it GETS it, ya know? its setting makes the story feel oddly related to aspects of my own life in a shitty midwestern town, where everything feels a little run-down and outdated, but then the people stick around and have a hard time escaping it. they work average jobs where they aren’t treated the best but they don’t really have the ability to get out and go somewhere better. parents try hard for their kids but it’s hard to climb a hill when it’s steep and muddy and everyone’s caught in a rut, i mean fuck, possum springs didn’t even have cell service most of the time.

and then the characters are all around my age and like... they’re weirdly realistic. and relatable. particularly around the time i played nitw for the first time i was still kinda recovering from the abrupt end of a couple of my most important friendships, so mae’s conflicts with bea and gregg hit close to home. gregg and mae being best goddamn friends but recognizing that they both need to allow the other to grow and not drag each other down, and also reconciling with the fact that they aren’t gonna be together forever since gregg and angus are planning on moving away... holy shit? and then mae and bea? oh my god?? the scene where they’re in bea’s room, listening to her mom’s old records, trying to be friends again but there’s just......... NO good option for mae to go with in that conversation. every choice is bad. there is no easy or soft way out, no matter how much mae wanted to help, it just sucked. i felt that. i don’t play a lot of games that don’t give you the ideal way out, that don’t offer you any good choices, so that stood out to me. mae and bea’s relationship isn’t easy or ideal, it’s like.... it has sharp jagged edges, but they still clearly really care for one another. idk, i just like that.

in general the game is just raw, i guess is the word. it hurts. but it hurts so good.

I played nitw back in summer 2017 and was slightly disappointed, but apparently that was because I didn’t play bea’s route because now it’s really hit home

Recently played nitw, and I honestly loved it so so much. It hit really close to home for me, like really close. The characters and the music and just everything about it it's such an amazing game I just had to draw my character in the style. It was really relaxing too.
