now this is the thing im biting my tongue on SO HARD bc it’s my favorite aspect of the world building and the universe and everything involved in it bUTIHDFKJG THERS SO MUCH I WANNA SAYYYYYYYYYY in short that one dream sequence holds more hints and information than ANYTHING from previous chapters, i think that it’s probably the MOST IMPORTANT dream to date. while we’ve seen some crazy ones in the past, this one is both the biggest hint and the biggest window into y/n’s past by FARRRR. even tho that whole scene was dialogue i think there’s so much to pick up on from it and so much to see and learn from it and it’s one of my faves bc there’s so much to unpack from it !!

Like yes the story and the development is freaking ✨yes✨ I love it. Genuinely think moc should be released as books. But I just cannot deal with the emotions rn.

But also now all I'm going to be thinking about how many sirens are actually out there. And if yn knew her parents and wasn't just an orphan the military found in the streets... How the fuck did she end up in the military grasps. What happened to her parents what happened to the community, is it still out there? Guess I gotta go back and reread the galaxies and the backstories, obviously I must have missed or have forgotten something. Ugh how the puzzle pieces are puzzling (or something). Moc is a drug and I'm not going sober anytime soon

releasing moc as books? a dream and a half, i can say that much slkjdlgkjlkf but back to the sirens... how many are out there? we heard early on that hongjoong was looking for ‘the last five’ but then seonghwa debunked that and said that was a mistranslation over time that was passed down and such, but beyond that, we don’t really know much about sirens as a whole? there are some hints in the galaxies and planet descriptions but if that dream sequence is a puzzle, i would say we have a handful of pieces that can be put into place based on what we’ve learned so far!!!!

Okay I lied, I am ready to unpack a little of the ✨emotions✨

When hongjoong explained that hwa tried to stop San only for San to detain him and in a sense make him watch the scene unfold. And then realising hwa had to go through that again, only being even more helpless. I don't doubt hwa loves San, but to see the events happening again, with someone he clearly loves as much as he does yn even if he also loves joong, and to see the desperation and determination must have been just. Horrible. Just absolutely soul breaking horrible. I can imagine him vowing to himself after San that he would never let something like that happen again. That of any of the crew got out of control like that, that he would fight harder to stop them. That he would would do absolutely everything in his power to stop it. And then being helpless as he watched yn do it. Just pure heart wrenching pain. And it must have been beyond terrifying to see someone you love ready and determined to kill themselves partly from rage and partly from desperation. With the backstory, that scene becomes almost as cruel as the warehouse scene with San. The only redeeming quality is no one needing life saving surgery in a time crunch, otherwise they would be the same level of ✨never again✨

honestly i think the two crew members i torture the most are san and hwa bc i just keep putting them thru all this shit and hurting them so much but really this was the defining point of why seonghwa was so afraid. before we kinda just knew he was afraid of yn and hongjoong was mad about it. in this revelation we get to see the source of the trauma and how it was amplified by it being someone he loves as dearly as he loves yn. and for sure when first reading that scene of yn and jisung in the brig, it’s meant to evoke a sense of anger and rage like yn is so angry to a point where she would do this sort of thing, but my hope with that scene was also to show that desperation. that when looking back at it after having already seen the rage and the aftermath, that reading it again shows how desperate and hopeless she was in that moment. which is exactly the same emotion that was evoked back in that warehouse scene with san, except it was relayed differently because the warehouse was a more immediate sense of desperation. this brig scene was meant to emulate that but in a slow burn kinda way where the veil of realization is pulled off after the fact and not in the moment!!!

Just to make sure you don't misunderstand. Those asks were compliments. You are an absolutely incredible writer. And the fact that you aren’t afraid of hurting your characters *cough cough* SHOOTING SAN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!!!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? *CLEARS THROAT AGRESSIVELY* just makes the story much better. No one gets plot armour, making it more realistic (?) and really draws in the writer and sorta imitates the fear and desperation the characters feel

PLS don’t worry, i live for every moment and i live for these open and raw and genuine conversations i didn’t take any as an insult i PROMISE!! i think part of the nature of this whole trope of space pirates and criminals is that hter is no guarantee of safety! i don’t wanna have to cut corners to make sure everyone stays unharmed and undamaged throughout the story when the nature of the world i’ve built thus far is a wildly dangerous one!!! i always say that i try to be as realistic as i can, all things considered, and i think that’s the biggest thing that adds to the ‘realism’ in my mind so im so happy to hear that you see it and appreciate it and enjoy it!!!

JOONG REALISING HE GOT A FULLY FLEDGED HEART RIPPER SIREN WHO CANT CONTROL HER BODY TO MOVE THROUGH A HARMLESS DOOR BUT CAN DEFINITELY KILL IN A HEARTBEAT (OR TWO 👀) ALSO THE CONTRAST OF REMOVING RHE BLOOD COLOURED WHITE OLASTIC AND HAVING A CLEAN HAND UNDERNWATH. truly one of the HIGHLIGHTS of the chapter simply bc of how shocking and sudden it is!! for me, that was one of the easiest scenes to write in the chapter, oddly enough? it was something that when it came time to write it, i knew how i wanted it to be and was able to just sit down and write it out the way its written in the final draft of the chapter. i really love playing with those aspects of fiction and storytelling. tangible to a point, without spelling it out. i think it’s obvious that i really love delayed realization in writing, but i really like playing with how the brain processes information and for me personally, i don’t pick up on things right away! i can realize them in a snap or it can take me a bit to go ‘oh god that’s what happened’, and i like playing with that in y/n’s character a LOT.

and in that same vein of thought, there are some layers to that scene as well when compared to the door scene. in the door scene we saw hongjoong clearly tell y/n ‘you need to do this to save san’ yet she wasn’t able to do it despite trying and believing hongjoong. then in the heart scene we saw y/n clearly tell herself ‘you need to do this to save san’ and she did it then. so there’s a lot at play in that parallel alone too. and with that internal monologue she has of im fine vs not fine, then san kissing the hand that touched a literal real actual beating heart for me that was a sort of self indulgent scene and i was really worried about it coming across as too cheesy or something like that, but that is something that’s gonna impact y/n as a character and her relationship with san when they have the conversation of ‘oh hey i put my hand through a man’s chest for you’

i think part of why this chapter was so difficult to construct and write as a whole definitely is because of all the undertones and nuances throughout, and in a lot of ways it’s so so much to even think about that it’s almost too much packed into one chapter alone, but even if you don’t pick up on all the nuances throughout, i’m hoping to revisit them and bring them back around in that delayed realization style again bc that’s one of my favorite things to do ofc :3

My Personal Current Favourite is Scum Villain’s Self Saving System (SVSSS) which is SOOOOOOO FUNNY Like it’s not as popular cause the comic was discontinued, and the anime looks like its from 2005 with the weird 3D animation but its my current comfort media!!! 

Its basically about a spite reading millennial (Shen Yuan) who died after reading a REALLY awful popular cheesy smut harem novel (think like 50 shade series but worse cause the protag had 600 wives) and was forced into the body of a minor but important villain (the protagonist’s teacher, Shen Qingqiu) from the novel who was fated to die with all his limbs cut off and his eyes and tongue plucked out and is told he has to fix the story so its not trash, he reasonably freaks the fuck out and hugs the protagonists (Luo Binghe) thigh so hard he turns him gay without realizing. Sadly, he does have to make sure certain plot points happen, which fucks him over a lot,  and he thinks Luo Binghe still wants to kill him instead of love him cause he has the Emotional Intelligence of a Rock, but its so funny reading about him handling all the awful tropey stuff, like imagine u have to be a character in My Immortal But With Porn?????? without breaking out of character too much?? I wouldn’t be able to handle it ajhakfkfhjfj He also finds out that he’s not the only transmigrator in the novel either, but it doesn’t matter cause theyre both So Fucking Stupid Collectively but everyone would honestly die for the both of them

jailbreak in the heavens 2: dig a tunnel

Sure enough, the moment Ming Yi put pressure on his shovel, a hole opened up before them. With the shovel raised, he burrowed crazily ahead while Shi Qingxuan, in the middle, cheered him on crazily. As the only non-crazy person, Xie Lian brought up the rear. That treasured shovel of the Earth Master was indeed magical, and with only a few strokes, a new tunnel of over ten meters was dug. - anybody remember mulch diggums from the artemis fowl series? this is much more dignified than that but i think this is only the second time ive read a character just starting digging a tunnel as a plot point

okay so much is going on i wish i hadnt spoiled who certain characters actually are for myself but i have no one to blame but me for a) not blacklisting spoilers at all and b) just having a little freefall through the tags. oh well. anyway heavenly college admissions scandal except way worse. the corruption extends to the heavens and the windmaster is having a very bad day

im gonna keep it real im getting tired of how often we get told how handsome hua cheng is. i know its all xie lian’s pov and while im not terribly familiar with it i know what genre we’re working with and im assuming thats pretty typical. its something i dont much care for in general and idk maybe it sounds better in the original but ngl its starting to make me roll my eyes. love you goth king but god okay we get it.

i guess what i will say about hualian so far is that overall i like them and i like how they interact in general they have a lot of nice moments and they just genuinely seem to like each other which is really nice to see EXCEPT for when it actually comes to things that could be romantic or sexual which is a shame bc i dont think it has to be like this. again disclaimer that im only reading a translation and dont know everything might not have all the knowledge necessary to accurately criticize etc etc and im assuming a lot of this is expected from the genre (disclaimer to this disclaimer that i cant say that for sure its just based on things ive picked up about the bl genre over the years) but idk like xie lian was so distressed after their underwater kiss scene. it was kind of uncomfortable to read and maybe im being unfair i know his cultivation is based around abstinence or whatever but idk i dont care for it. and that scene alone doesnt have to be a bad thing like idk i guess its his first kiss ever (?) and it would make sense if he feels weird about it but i just have my doubts thats going to be addressed or resolved in a satisfying way. also im like. dude everyone is like centuries old. xie lian’s been on earth for 800 years. has he really never met or heard of a gay person during all this time? maybe he hasnt idk what he got up to yet maybe that’s actually a thing. also same thing with the reactions from the immortals to xie lian in a dress and characters like the windmaster like again you’re all centuries old and its not uncommon to be able to just completely change gender presentation. why are you all weird about a man wearing a woman’s dress? i just feel like that shouldnt be a big deal to these characters idk

also again not going to lie part of this that im not really a big fan of reading romance in general. yes i am reading this book. yes i do read and write a lot of fanfic that includes or centers romance. im multifaceted. but really what im talking about is the like physical side of it and descriptions im extremely picky about it. ill give an example. early on in the torture pit (or whatever it was called i cant remember lol) when xie lian kind of accidentally felt up hua cheng in the dark when he was being carried. i dont think thats a bad thing to have happen between the two romantic leads i think thats fine and good to include that early but i just did not enjoy reading it when it happened idk maybe it was the wording and i do think that moments like these work better in a visual medium. ive definitely read het romance that reads like this and i wasnt a fan of that either lol same with fanfic i get tired when writers go on and on about how hot one characters finds another character. this isnt a huge criticism of it like i said im picky but again like with the way that hua cheng is described it just makes me roll my eyes sorry kings

okay back to the reading. this whole saving the fishermen thing feels like a big set up for something narrative-wise. hua cheng specifically insisted on coming and i know one of the characters involved ends up dying im wondering if thats now it would be a good time tbh if things get just a bit too unfortunate during this heavenly calamity... and the brothers are notably not having a harmonious time... also tho it feels very likely we’ll just have another Hualian Moment (tm)

Looking down from above, the entire area was painted in a terrifying black. It was easy to see the collision between the two different-coloured currents. Their fierce battle was what formed this enormous whirlpool. As the eye swallowed the ship whole, the two currents of water separated. However, the battle was far from over. Like two venomous vipers, they continued to snap at each other. okay kiss #2 again its not the kisses themselves its xie lian’s reaction it just bothers me idk im not saying i need him to be super into it and completely unconflicted about it rn but he’s just so freaked out about it and idk i just dont really like it just feels weird i dont care for that aspect of it. also dude hua cheng is a ghost and he did this exact same thing for you before just chill. i wish instead of xie lian literally running away while screaming that hes sorry he was just like “oh haha youre fine thats cool im gonna go look around the woods i dont feel weird about this at all haha” like idk its kind of funny but when its literally our two romantic leads i just feel like its confusing like it kind of makes me feel like they shouldnt be together if one of them freaks out this much again considering the fact that they are both CENTURIES old. i know i know xie lian is an 800 year old virgin but. he hasn’t been like this about anything else so yeah idk like it still could have been awkward and funny i just dont think it needed to be so :/ that being said it was funny that xie lian was then internally like “oh i did it wrong? perhaps i should ask him for more.. instructions....” if that actually happens i might like it bc it would complete this little watery theme

also i do think that oblivious xie lian thinking “wow whoever it is that hua cheng fancies is an idiot for not liking him back theyre totally taking him for granted :/” is kind of funny and sweet. actually the whole conversation they have at the campfire is good and im bookmarking it to think about later

Human Connectivity with Nature Presentation

Below is the text to a presentation I prepared which focused on the connectivity between Humans and Nature. This piece of research increasingly helped me reflect on my physical practice, as i researched how TV, Scientists and Artist’s had theorised ways in which Nature and Man can co-operate together. Despite my work so far focusing on representing our co-existence with the natural world as distant by trying to highlight the differences in the human image and natural image, what I began this project wanting to do was generate a connection with nature, not highlight how distant our relationship is with nature. So with this presentation I researched on how the existence of Humans and Nature have been brought closer together.

Hannibal: Amuse-Bouche

Bodies are buried, alive but unconscious, and heavily fertilized, with mushrooms feeding from their bodies.

“The structure of the fungus mirrors that of the human brain, an intricate web of connections” - Hannibal

“Maybe he admires their ability to connect the way human minds cant?” - Will Graham

“Is that what your farmer is looking for?  Some sort of connection?” - Hannibal

This combined with the previous scene of the discovery of the bodies interested me. It intrigued me to think about the human body physically connecting with nature, being able to somewhat live in symbiosis with it, or to more accurately in this case, provide a platform to ‘give birth’ to nature.  

“he was talking about people having the same properties as a fungus, thoughts leaping from brain to brain, they mutate the evolve”. After talking directly to the killer, we begin to understand more about his interest in the fungi’s ability to connect in comparison to the human brain and establishing connections. The killer goes onto explain, "if you walk through a field of mycelium, they know you are there...their spores reach of you as you walk by, I know who you are reaching for”

This brought me on to consider, what is mycelium and is it our pathway to re-establishing a closer relationship with the natural world.  

Mycelium. What is it?

Mycelium is the vegetative body for a fungus that can produce mushrooms, however there are some species that do not.

How mycelium grows

Mycelium is a root system. Once a spore lands on appropriate substrates where conditions are suitable the spore will germinate; this is the beginning where the  mycelium forms from a single melismatic cell. Mycelium consists of the growing stem cells of the fungus.

Fungi are heterotrophs meaning they gain energy from their surroundings. Just like humans. The mycelium then grows by releasing enzymes from the hyphal tips of the mycelium, these enzyms go on to digest the surroundings and absorb nutrients. The mycelium grows creating a network, embedding itself through every particle of the soil, which can be so thick that hundreds of kilometers of mycelium can exist underneath a single footprint.                

How mycelium networks  

The mycelial network connects and colonizes itself to neighbouring plants and tree roots in order to transport both nutrients and information between them. It is where the fungal cells interact with the roots, that the exchange of nutrients takes place; this exchange not only connects one species but between species.  

This relationship of symbiosis is referred to as mycorrhiza which is a fungus, the reproductive organs are what we know as mushrooms.

Mycelium networks include a multitude of nodes and links like that of the internet, this consists of

The Hub: Hub trees, which are Larger, older, more established trees nurture their young, but also establishes a network to other neighboring trees.

Mother trees have been found to share their excess carbon to seedlings through the mycelial network increasing the seedlings survival.

When mother trees are injured or dying, they send signals of wisdom to their neighboring seedlings, to increase their knowledge and resistance to potential future threats. Thus, increasing their chance of survival.  

In conclusion, the mycelial network, creates conversation between organisms transferring data and nutrients through an intricate web, uniting individual trees to work together and increase survival.

Many state the similarity between mycelium and the internet, stating it’s natures underground internet, however I am beginning to think of it more of the earths Brain/central nervous system.

Mycelium networks and the brain

In summary, Neurons are impulse conducting cells that connect the brain, spinal column and nerves that make up the central nervous system in vertebrates. Neurons send electrical impulse signals and messages from one place to another within the central nervous system. This, functions very similarly to that of the Mycelial network. Both transmitting information throughout a network in the aim of survival.  

And just like the complex network of neurons in our brains if a branch of mycelium is broken, quickly, information being transmitted will find alternate ways of channeling due to multitude of routes.  

Not only is there a functional resemblance between both Mycelium and Neural networks, but there appears to be a physical resemblance, for example look at the similarities between the cerebellum and mycelium.

These observations are not a surprise when we realise that we are more closely related to fungi than any other kingdom. Just as we exhale carbon dioxide and inhale oxygen so does mycelium, Mycelium is also sentient and can sense our presence as we walk along the forest floor, it will reach up trying to grab debris from the aftermath of our footsteps.

The unification of Mycelium and Humans.

When we acknowledge how similar we are by design, it is interesting to think of our interconnectivity, existing as separate species and to further explore are we really separate entities from fungi, or has fate bound us to mother nature.

From the Ted talk by Paul Stamets: 6 ways mushrooms can save the world, here are a select few points that explore the benefits of establishing our own exchangeable network between humans and mushrooms.

In an experiment with four piles of substrate contaminated with diesel and other patrolium waste. One pile was a control pile, others were treated with either enzymes, bacteria and finally one inoculated with mushroom mycelium.  

The mycelium absorbs the oil and produces enzymes which break down carbon-hydrogen bonds.  The mycelium becomes saturated with the oil. When returning six weeks later, there were three substrates that were dead, dark in colour and stinky, however the pile that was inoculated with mushroom mycelium had in fact grown hundreds of pounds of oyster mushrooms. The enzymes had transformed the hydrocarbons into carbohydrates, which are fungal sugars that served as the fungus’ food.

Therefore, could mushrooms be the answer for reversing the problem of human chemical pollutants?

After considering the benefits of our collaboration between human and fungi in life, what about in death?

The infinity burial suit  

Artist, Jae Rhim Lee created the Infinity burial project, “an alternative burial system that uses mushrooms to decompose and clean toxins in bodies and deliver nutrients to plant roots”.  

She recalls “A recent study found BPA in 93 % of people 6 and older. But that’s just one chemical. The center of disease control in the U.S says we have around 219 pollutants within our bodies”. She then goes on to talk about how when we die these pollutants will be transferred into our environment, continuing the cycle of toxicity.  To combat this cycle, she proposes the idea of the Infinity burial project. She began exploring feeding her hair/nails/skin to fuel mushrooms, so when she dies the mushrooms will recognize her body and begin to consume her. Through this process she generated the idea of the Mushroom Death Suit which contains mushroom spores within the mycelium inspired crochet design.  

She has stated, “I image the infinity mushroom as a symbol of a new way about thinking about death and the relationship between my body and the environment...it’s a step towards accepting that someday I will die and decay. It’s also a step towards taking responsibility for my own burden on the planet.... Accepting death means accepting that we are physical beings who are intimately connected to the environment... And as the saying goes, we come from dust and will return to dust. And once we understand that we are connected to our environment, we shall see that the survival of our species depends on the survival of our planet. I believe this is the beginning of true environmental responsibility.”

Heterotopia

Heterotopia is a idea that is explained by philosopher Michel Foucault which describes certain Institutional, cultural and digressive spaces that are different somehow usually, disturbing, distorted intense, contradictory of transforming. Heterotopias are worlds that are within worlds which mirrors and also unsettles or distorts what is outside. Examples of heterotopia would be: graveyard, prisons, brothels, ships, bars, garden of antiquity, and many more, these examples are provided by Foucault. 

Etymology

Heretrotopia follows the arrangement created by the concept of utopia and dystopia. The prefix part of the word Hetero- comes from Ancient Greek, (it means “different, other, another”) its is also fused with Greek morpheme τόπος (This means “place”) together they become “other place”. A utopia is a society or community that is imagined, it is the ideal place with high value or almost perfected qualities for the society. The opposite of this would be dystopia, this is a society or community that is low value or unsettling, dystopia translates to “bad place”. to put things simple a utopia is a place where everything is good; Dystopia is a place where everything is bad; Heterotopia is where things are different. 

Foucault’s six principles

Become accepted in all cultures but in diverse forms (mostly as sites of ‘crisis’ or later ‘deviation’)

Mutate and have particular actions at other points in history

Juxtapose in one space many incompatible spatial elements

encapsulate spatio-temporal discontinuities or intensities

presuppose an ambivalent system of opening and closing, enter and exit, distance and penetration

Have a particular action in relation to different spaces as, for example illusion or compensation

Examples 

1: Swimming Pool

-Feels like you are in another world but yet surrounded by the normal world.

-When under the water everything looks and feels different and also looks distorted

-Time feels slower especially when under the water as everything moves slower.

2: Disney Land 

-Mirrors a world within a world, once your in it you the fact that the normal world exists is gone, this is because Disney land is design so that you cant see the outside world.

-Forget about time, you enjoy yourself so much in this new world that time flies by and you don’t realise what is happening outside.

-Has the potential of producing a world as itself.

3: Space Station

-Mirrors a world within a world (The space station is sort of looking down on the earth/world giving the effect of life being beyond just earth in another place.)

-lose sense of time (it also looks as if time isn’t moving as gravity is different and the normal world is far far away.)

-Distorted feeling (it would be difficult to understand sense of direction in a place like this.)

Heterotopia artist research

1: Beksinski

Beksinski was born in 1929 and passed away in the year 2005. He was a great polish artist as you can tell from some of his work shown above. He mainly used techniques such as photography, sculpting and painting, he specialised in dystopian surrealism. Beksinski did his drawings and paintings in a way he called ‘Baroque’ or ‘Gothic’ manner. His creations  were created mostly in 2 sections. The first section would usually consider to have expressionistic colour with a very powerful style of utopian realism also surreal architecture, just like a doomsday setting. 

2. Vincent J. Stoker

Vincent J. Stoker is a French photographer Heterotopia: the end of history is one of his series. He has a interesting style of art in his photographs, the setting in his images are usually shot in an abandon place like building with symmetry, this creates a very pleasing image to look at. His images give off the feel of heterotopia as the abandon places have turned into another world to what they used to be, looking at it you can sort of picture what the building used to look like which reflects the use of heterotopia.

3.Michael Sweerts

Michael Sweerts was born 1618 - 1664, he was a flemish painter/printmaker of the baroque style. he is most known for his figurative and genre portraits, paintings and tronies (tronies is common in dutch golden age in painting that shows overemphasised face expressions usually relating to a common type, or category of types). Michael Sweerts followed a peripatetic life, he worked in many places such as Persia, Rome, Amsterdam, Brussels and India. 

He has learned a lot of his techniques from travelling to different places, for example when spending time in Rome he became connected to the dutch and Flemish painters of low-life scenes commonly known as the Bamboccianti.

Project Model Development

First we had three main ideas we wanted to build, we narrowed it down to a single idea by debating with our group which idea was most interesting and best shows Heterotopia. Me and my group settled on the idea of modelling a space station. We took many different things into account before making our decision, such as how we will create the space station? what materials do we have to work with? how is this a Heterotopia? is it possible? and so on.

After settled on an idea we started to research space stations to see what they looked like on the outside as well as inside. With and idea of how they looked we began to sketch more ideas on how it would look and also work.

We all then look at each others sketch idea and then decided on which best fits what we were looking for, once the vision was there we started getting the process of developing the model, which first need measurement and a scale. Once finding the dimensions that would work well with our vision, we started to sketch out a few more idea such as the details of the space station and thought about how we can use the materials necessary to make our model as good as possible.

Here we have measured and drawn onto the cardboard (which will be used for our model) the back wall window part of our design, this section of the model will be connected to all of the rest so it is a crucial piece. after using this as a guide it was easier to find the correct size for the other pieces.

All of the piece for our models are now cut out and correctly measured, it was just a matter of sticking it all together. First we tried using a glue stick, it work but it didn't have the stability we were looking for so we found a glue gun instead which made things a whole lot easier and strengthened the model. Stick the models together was a bit of a fiddle but helping each other, one holding the pieces one using the glue gun also saved time and made it easier to a line the parts correctly.

Here are some of the smaller details that we have drawn out onto cardboard, theses will be stuck onto the sides of the model, they will be used as the wires and little other pieces that are seen on the outside of a real space station. This will give the model a more realistic feel instead of just having plain sides with no definition.

Here we have the final model, overall the model looks great and turned out just as we wanted, we also added a spaceman character to peak the potential of the model, There we also other ideas that were took into account but however we thought the best decision would be to leave them out. The only con of our design would be a bit of glue is visible on the model, and it would look better with colour.

Other ideas we had:

Stand: We thought about adding a stand to the model, however we though the model would look better without a stand and there would be more and better types of images without one, below you can see the types of images we were able to achieve without the stand that would be possible with the stand.

Background: A space background was another thing we consider but it was shortly decided against it after little development. We thought the background would properly get in the way and it would also require the stand.

Here are some of the images we took during the photo-shooting of our model. I think they all look really cool, we had a bit of trouble sorting the camera, but once the setting were correct and to our liking we were able to create some really nice images. We used dark and lighting to make the environment give a space feel to it. We were able to get a lot of cool and different angles as well, we decided to use different colour lights (colours: blue and pink) to give an even more spacey feel. Other techniques such as composition were also used to enhance the look of the pictures, my opinion of the project would be it was really fun and we were all able to create something we were happy with. If i could do it again i would added more detail and colour. 

Through the process of making this we all took turns doing different activities to contribute to the model, we all research and used references to do our own sketch ideas and discussed them to further improve our project design, we all took part in cutting out the pieces and building the model in some way, i found trying to stick the smaller pieces together a challenge however others in the group were able to do this a lot easier, which made it better for them to focus on doing things they were best at in a result of saving time.

Rune Factory 4 why do you persist in having TOO MANY GOOD CHARACTERS I’ve narrowed it down to two but now i keep changing my damn mind again! I’ve decided I’m gonna see the marriages for the three characters I liked on different save files, but who should I marry first and go with for real on this save file?? i’ve run out of patience for waiting to pick a batchelor as the VERY LAST THING i do before I turn off the game, I need to do it now! I need to do it before I start this final bonus dungeon thing to rescue [spoilery dead character] from the afterlife. I WANT TO SHOW THEM MY CHILD WHEN THEY RETURN. And this game is SO LONG and cos of how semi random the skill levelling is, I dont think I’d have the patience to complete the same 20 so hours three times to complete all the savefiles, and it’d be really frustrating if I couldnt max out all the same skills on them :P SO YEAH GAHHH Need to FINALLY DECIDE between leon and dylas!

Which could get a bit annoying since its just a character model swap and its a bit glitchy sometimes, but I like both genders of protagonist equally much anyway. i just feel slightly guilty thinking im somehow being disloyal to the one I picked at the beginning, but then again i literally only picked the girl because you cant romance dylas unless you’re the girl and GAHHH I was so happy to know you could cheat and have cheat mode gay marriage so IMMA GONNA DO IT * seriously its an option so i cant NOT take it * make up for lack of doug x dylas route by doing dylas x male protag * also dylas was the one I wanted to pick since before i knew anything about the game, he was my fave based on design alone and then his personality in his first scene was amazing and aaaa * also dylas’s romance route is REALLY TERRIBLE which is maybe a pro and maybe a con?? like.. i wanna marry him cos he had no plot and i wanna make it up to him, but i also DONT wanna marry him cos his route wasnt my favourite plot and aaaa why does my brain not make sense * also a pro: PORCOLINE * i get to officially marry into the restaurant fam! * i have literally got porcoline in my party right now while im holding the engagement ring, he needs to be there to see me pop the question! i just love this dad so much, i have to marry one of his kids * also I can pretend that arthur is still my friend and he isnt mad that i picked his brother over him and we can all be the best family ever

Leon:

* has the best and saddest romance route backstory thing that makes me feel so guilty if I dont marry him * is also my favourite design! like, dylas is the best monster but leon has the best human form design, i have no lil niggling complaints about how he looks like a wolf for no damn reason. * is the only bara character * ended up being surprisingly cute and genuine about his love and i actually really like the archetype of the flirty fake-playboy type guy who isnt the jerky playboy archetype but instead secretly adorable and shy when he falls in love for real! And its even better cos he’s a snarky overconfident trickster guy so its EVEN MORE CUTE when he drops his big facade and lets himself admit his emotions! * BUT admiteddly I still feel rather uncomfortable doing overly flirty innuendoy dating sims because I’m way too asexual to relate. I’ve had a few moments with leon where its just like... killed the moment kinda, and made me feel bad that im not the intended audience. This game makes me care about the characters so i feel just as awkward as when I’ve accidentally ‘led people on’ in real life in high school and had to super anxiously let them down. I just feel awkward even though I know that the character in-universe that I’m playing at probably isnt asexual, im still like ‘noooo i dont wanna trick him into a sexless marriage he wouldnt be happy aaaa’ * but also aaa he has the most chemistry with the female main character I think, he’s like the only one I think looks like a cuter couple with her, while I wanna ship dylas with the male mc. i just really liked a fanart I saw of them described as ‘fox and bunny’! thats totally it, her hairstyle just matches so well with an animal ears dude, and their colours have a good appeal together and stuff~ * Also i have more headcanons about what it would be like when they had kids and stuff! so thats a big appeal because getting to see the kid characters is the big reason i wanna marry a charrie * ALSO, its kinda... uhh... to put it lightly... well, Leon is literally the only dark skinned man in the entire world. SERIOUSLY. Rune Factory rarely ever has more than one character of a different race, and I just feel like if you’re gonna be so limited in your options I wanna pick that option like... maybe if they see they’re the popular ones then they’ll realise theyre making a dumb decision and add more racial diversity in future games?? or at least npcs?? seriously??? He’s not just the only dark skinned batchelor but THE ONLY CHARACTER IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. At least rune factory oceans had the whole dark elf race. (Tho that was weird that there’s apparantly no black humans in this world...)

Post C: Textual Analysis Draft.

The films I have chosen are Wes Anderson’s ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ (2014) and Luc Besson’s ‘The Family’ (2013).

 I have chosen the two of these films as I saw similarities in terms of the colours used in both the films along with sound and lighting, all of which I plan to incorporate in my own film. Although the editing techniques differ within both of the films, I plan to marry my favourite elements from both of them to make a final product that has aspects of editing techniques from them both.

 ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ revolves around the idea of a concierge who teams up with one of his employees (Zero, played by Tony Revolori) to prove his innocence after he is framed for the murder of Madame D, a woman, very dear to his heart. ‘The Family’ is based off the idea of a Mafia family under the witness protection program that want to change their lives for the better, despite the Manzoni family perhaps not being too fond of this change. Although the narratives of these films are not too similar, (one protagonist is trying to prove that they are not guilty, whereas the other is almost blind to the feeling of guilt) the styles of the two are surprisingly similar. Despite the lack of similarity within the morals of both of the protagonists, both of the narratives revolve around the idea of sudden deaths, whether they were caused by the protagonist like in The Family or not like in The Grand Budapest Hotel. An important aspect of both films is that both protagonists, (Robert De Niro, who plays Giovanni Manzoni, a father, who kills individuals he ‘needs to’ with no mercy and M. Gustave played by Ralph Fiennes, a simple minded, intelligent, humble man who faces his issues, rather than creating them.) share a like-minded way of thinking, in the sense that they’re both quite reserved, calm people despite being in quite peculiar situations a lot of the time. The both of them remain collected individuals, which is what is played up in both of the films for comedic effect as, generally, if one is getting arrested or perhaps their house is getting blown up, it is hard to stay calm and reserved. I plan to include this idea of a calm, reserved protagonist whilst a ridiculous situation is happening around them, within my own film.

 As the macro concept that i chose to discuss was ‘style’, It is detrimental that the two films have similarities in terms of Mise en scene, which they do. Both of the films use muted colours which help create a sombre scene, almost contradictory to the comedy in the film yet managing to still play up the idea of a frightening situation, in which someone would generally panic in, being a funny one.

 Cinematography:

Low key lighting is used in order to create an almost good cop, bad cop mood, as if he’s contemplating and weighing out his good decisions vs. his bad one. All of this is done with lighting that only affects half of the face, leaving the other half dark and mysterious. I plan to incorporate this technique within my own film.  

A Medium close up shot is used whilst M.Gustave is rapidly asking Zero about whether he has ever been questioned by the authorities, to which Zero replies that he had been arrested and tortured in the past. An expected reaction from anybody would be that M.Gustave would feel, some what, sympathetic towards Zero and his tragic past however, his reaction to that statement was what seemed to be, relief as he could trust that Zero had been in a situation involving the authorities and that he knew what to do in such a situation. The comedy in this scene lies in the whole concept of something ridiculous, (getting tortured) being understood as just the norm (M.Gustave’s reaction). I plan to recreate these ideas within my film.

 Many Medium long shots were used during both of the films. In this scene, the rest of the family is getting confronted by the father and all 3 of the members look at him in sync and reply with the same thing. The high key lighting seems to have been used in order to create an alert scene that represents the fact that they are all very aware of the bad things they did but are making a hard effort to not look guilty, the shadows within this scene could represent the bad, dark things they did that day which they’re trying to almost repress, although they all know what they did.

 Mise En Scene:

Bright walls in yellow and blue could also represent the internal conflict between good and bad in Warren’s mind. Here, he is getting confronted by almost all of the staff team at his school about the crimes he had committed. The fact that the majority of the walls in this scene are yellow could mean that Warren doesn’t believe that anything he did during his time at the school was bad. Warren is portrayed as a very smart, cunning 14yr old, the books behind the teachers could represent how packed his mind is with information, information that, even the teachers, will not know. This could all represent how ahead he is of everybody in his life, despite his age.

In this scene Agatha is sat up in her single bed with white sheets which could symbolize purity. The single bed is clearly used to represent her relationship status, a single bed for a single woman. Above her there is a small light, which Anderson could’ve placed there to represent Agatha’s very last hope to achieve happiness, the light is somehow managing to light up the whole room, which means this hope she has, could be a positive one.

 Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest, has many pink tones which could all mean things like love, innocence, health, happiness and romance. Luc Besson’s The Family, uses almost none of those tones but, instead uses many yellow and blue tones as seen in these screenshots. As previously mentioned, as yellow and blue are on almost opposite sides of the colour scale, it could all represent an internal conflict between good and bad within all of the family member’s minds. In this scene, Giovanni had just opened the door to greet Robert (who is essentially trying to save this family from assassination). In this shot the contrast between the yellow and blue is very prominent, and the door he had just opened is battered and not in a very good state overall which could symbolize what is going on in Gio’s mind, perhaps he is tired of the lifestyle that he lives, but in the other hand doesn't want to change a single thing about it, which is why he didn’t change the old door to a new one, because he doesn’t want a fresh start although it would be best for him, just like changing the door to a new one would also probably benefit the house that they’re residing in.

In this scene, Maggie is smoking a cigarette whilst laid back on the couch. cigarettes are bad for you, but the lack of care shown on Maggie’s face during this scene symbolizes that, she, is also probable sick and tired of the lifestyle that she lives, so much so that she no longer cares for her own health. When one is lacking care for things, they are usually in a calm state of mind, which the low key lighting could suggest. Despite, once again getting confronted by her husband, she remains in a calm, careless state of mind. She is wearing all grey in this scene, which also represent, carelessness, bore and possibly even depression as when the phrase “feeling grey” usually indicates said feelings.

 In this scene, again, the blue and yellow contrasting colours are being used, this time in the form of low key lighting for the yellow tones and high key lighting being used for the blue. The fact that the majority of this scene is blue, could symbolize that bad things are on the horizon for the family, which they were, the assassins were coming.

 In both of these scenes, Both characters are running however one is running away from the thing that they essentially created for themselves, whereas the other is running from something they didn’t do, but something they are getting accused for. In The Family, Belle, is almost exaggerating the way she runs, exaggerating the fear on her face and taking short, feminine like, leaps as she runs. This is definitely played up in this scene for comedic purposes, mocking the majority of crime/horror movies as their narrative is overall, the same. The character gets into a scary situation, in which they have to protect themselves, so they run away but always end up getting caught and killed. I think that Luc Besson must have recognized this and decided to slightly mock these common narratives by over exaggerating the way Belle runs away from an assonant. This is also played up in The Grand Budapest and I plan to recreate this idea of an over exaggerated reaction or an under-exaggerated reaction, in my own film.

In these scenes the low key lighting used in The Family could represent that she is running away into yet another bad situation whereas, In the Grand Budapest, the high key, Bright lighting could mean the opposite. Despite this however, Bella survives and the film finishes with an, expected, happy ending but M. Gustave, ends up in prison.

 Bella is wearing a white dress which represents innocence and purity, very contradictory to her character, a reckless, yet smart, teenager who also commits crimes along with the rest of her family. The closed doors within every corner shop in this scene could represent the fact that, she cant run away into a closed, safe space, like a corner shop just like she cant get away from the issues her and her family have created for themselves.

 In the scene where M.Gustave is running away, there are multiple sets of stairs which could mean that, he in fact can run away from his issues (that he did not create) into a situation where he is safe however, as previously mentioned, Belle gets away and M.Gustave, gets caught.

Post J-Initial Ideas

Macro elements:

In terms of narrative, I will be linking all of my chosen focal films and creating my own film with small areas of my focal films. For example, I would like to use the idea of an outcast- I would like my protagonist to seem to have a boring life, and to not seem to have many friends, when in reality it is quite the opposite. I feel that this is an effective technique because it adheres to the stereotype of “don’t judge a book by its cover”. I am going to utilise most of the aspects of Todorov’s equilibrium (stages 1, 2, 3 and 4) because Tim Burton also tends to adhere to these, however, in stage 5 of the equilibrium, I am going to have a resolution, but it will not be a happy resolution, as this is also something that Tim Burton tends to do throughout his films, particularly the ones that I have chosen to focus on. The narrative in my film will be predominantly linear, because this is how Tim Burton tends to structure his films. I will not be adhering to Prop’s character types very much, as Tim Burton tends to stray away from this. I am going to be using the character types of the villain and the heroine, however, the heroine in my short film will have to save herself from the villain, rather than the hero being a separate character. I am planning to have a voice over of a monologue from my protagonist at one point, however, I am not sure how this would work when it came to editing my film together, and I am not sure when it would fit in. 

In regards to themes, I am going to focus on the idea of ‘man vs himself’ with my protagonist. As I have previously said, my heroine will have to save herself from her abusive relationship, however, she is conflicted with herself because she feels that she loves him, and she does not have many friends, and therefore constantly has to play ‘Devil’s advocate’. 

When it comes to representation, I am trying to portray the representation of ‘escape’ in a way that is coherent and understandable, whilst still not being the main motif of the film. I am doing this because this is something that is prominent in Tim Burton films, particularly the ones that I have chosen to focus on. I have chosen to conform to the stereotype of the antagonist being a male because I feel that it would have the largest effect on my audience. I feel that because the male in my film is going to be abusing his girlfriend, it is a representation that is widely stereotyped. I would like to create contrasting film to this one, and have the gender roles reversed, as I feel that this would also have a large effect on the audience. 

I would like my audience to take away a variety of different messages from my film, my main message would be that abusive relationships can have an incredibly negative effect on a person, and that if there is somebody in my audience that would relate to this, I would like them to seek help. There are a number of people in my life that have been through something similar to the concept in my film, and I feel that it would have helped them by seeing something similar to this.

My film will be influenced by the style of Tim Burton, who has been influenced by a variety of different directors throughout his life, and his films are largely influenced by German Expressionism. German Expressionism is prominent in many of Tim Burton’s films, particularly the idea of playing on size and using shadows. This is something that is shown in films such as Metropolis (Fritz Lang: 1927). Burton’s play on size and shadows is something that I am going to utilise in my short film as I feel that it is an incredibly effective technique. 

In terms of authorship, I am the most influenced by the screenwriters of my chosen focal films. This is something that I have tried to reflect when writing my own short film, because I have tried to use the same narrative structure and the same themes within my film. I have also been influenced by the cinematographer as I am going to try and make use of some similar shots that are in my focal films. 

Micro technical elements:

In terms of cinematography, I am going to use a lot of similar camera angles and techniques as the ones that Tim Burton has chosen to use in my chosen focal films. For example, I am going to use canted angles because it is a camera angle that Tim Burton tends to use, and I feel that this will help my audience to make the connection as to who my chosen director was. I would also like to use tracks and pans because this is also a technique that Tim Burton tends to sue, and I feel that it effective. In addition to this, I will also use lighting in a way that gives my film a dark atmosphere and is effective in achieving my messages and values. Tim Burton plays with lighting incredibly well, and it has an immense effect on the audience. 

In regards to mise en scene, I am going to use a variety of different techniques that will portray my messages and values in the most effective way possible. For example, I am going to film the happy parts of my film outside, and the sad/distressing parts of my film indoors. I feel that this will be effective because it will be clear to the audience that a bad scene is coming if my characters are indoors. This is also something that Tim Burton uses in a way, for example, in Alice in Wonderland, Burton uses colours and location to signify the difference between fantasy and reality. I am going to use costume in a way that signifies the difference between my two characters, and that represents the moods that both the protagonist and antagonist are in. I have played on size when it came to casting, as this is something that Tim Burton tends to do. When it came to casting roles for my film, I wanted to have my antagonist be a tall male, and therefore intimidating. I wanted to have my protagonist to be a relatively short female, so that in contrast to the male, they seemed to be towered over. I am going to keep the colours of my set relatively dull, as I feel that this will aid my film in terms of creating a negative atmosphere. 

When it comes to editing, I am going to try and make my short film run as smoothly as I possibly can. I am going to use several different editing techniques that will be effective in portraying my key messages and values. For example, I am planning to use the idea of the ‘voices inside of your head’ and physicalise it. I am going to do this by filming several people in front of a green screen and edit it so that all we can see is their faces. I will put the heads of these characters in the background of a shot of my protagonist, and have their voices represent the voices inside of my protagonist’s head. I feel that this would be effective because it makes the film non-naturalistic, which is something that Tim Burton would do. 

I would like to use examples of both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds as this is something that Tim Burton does. I would also like to exaggerate the diegetic sounds that I am going to use (e.g. if a door slams, make the sound of it appear louder than it actually is). The reason that I would do this is because I feel that it is a subtle but effective technique to use when trying to disassociate a scene with reality. I have also thought about using a voice-over during my short film, however, I do not know where I would put it. I feel that it would be effective and help my audience to make the association with my film and my chosen focal films depending on how I went about it, however, I do not know if it would fit in my script.
