Ghostbusters Game Theory: Venkman fully didn't believe in ghosts at the start of the movie and had no idea any of their stuff actually worked. When it turned out ghosts were real he just kinda played along because fuck man what else are you gonna do

I know I joked about DVDs but in all seriousness, I'm really glad that there's an option for watching VODs that isn't on Twitch and YouTube. It's been mentioned a few times today, but both of the interfaces of these platforms have been increasingly enshittified. I simply do not use YouTube anymore because of how horrid the interface is. I caught up on campaign 2 entirely on YouTube (and sometimes via podcast) in 2019 with no issues, but it is straight up maddening trying to use it now, and I don't know that I would have made it through the campaign if I was trying to catch up today.
I absolutely understand being tired of additional streaming services and I am absolutely in the same boat, but I also don't know how many people really recognize how gutted media distribution has become in the last ten years in the name of convenience. We all kind of realize it, but it's hard to grasp just how extensive it is. We can talk about independent business choices separately, and we should, but when the only platforms on which you have the option to distribute your work are at best frustrating to use and at worst hostile to human life, when monetization services can censor anyone they please with little explanation and have been cracking down on any content they arbitrarily deem inappropriate, when it is not clear that centralized conglomerate social media sites will continue to exist in the next year let alone decade, it is genuinely crucial for independent creators to start building alternative avenues of distribution that they control now.

I do want to talk about sharing art online from the perspective of a hobby freelancer but before that I'll just toss this tidbit I mentioned on my main
Reblogs are not numbers. Reblogs are meant to share and pass on artwork that someone may like. NO ONE is forced to reblog anything BUT it is a core of engagement in a space like tumblr. Engagement is what brings in interest after all and it's one piece of what makes it important for freelance artists here.
When you look at the numbers and the notes, we need to stop viewing them and comparing them with likes (me included) or total in general. It doesn't help.
Artists do self rebloging to both show or remind folks they've done some work as well as to nudge people to reblog their stuff. Tags are nice and comments in them are a nice way to engage too but passing on the work, especially to help someone to get noticed, is a good way to just work the site as intended.
It will always be about luck because we can't guess who wants to engage with what online. You also can't blame yourselves for this. Don't use the internet mentality of "content" (eugh!) and "flopping" and go about it that way. People find stuff I drew years back and find ways to engage with it now. It's really about luck.
There are things that can help but I'll go about it in another post.
One more thing. Don't be shy about "shilling". Advertise your open commissions, your patreons or ko-fis. I promise it has nothing to do with how big of an artist you are. Remember that you're doing that within your own zone so "bothering" followers is hardly the case, it's your house. Make a tag for it if it helps your mind. I say as someone with social anxiety.

Listen. every time I rewatch Starstruck (especially the scene between Margaret and Auma) I become convinced of 3 things
Auma tried flirting with Margaret back in college but Margaret never even noticed because she was so hung up on Lucienne
Margaret and Lucienne will NOT last. I don't think Lucienne's quarter-life crisis will end with her developing the same heroic values as Margaret. That and Margaret's role in ruining Lucienne's life will eventually drive a wedge between them once the honeymoon phase ends
Sid will hear that her Mommy and her Aunt Margaret could have been a thing once and will want to Parent Trap them
What I'm saying is, Margaret/Auma is the real sleeper ship of Starstruck and I need more people to understand this

genre savvy total drama contestant who, in their infinite genius, orchestrates their own enemies-to-lovers plotline in an attempt to stay plot relevant enough to make it to the finals.
they spend the first couple of challenges picking out their 'enemy' from the crowd, then approach them quietly to avoid the others' suspicions (and the cameras too) suggesting their plan.
"listen, the two most popular total drama couples? duncney and aleheather. both enemies to lovers, and both couples made it super far into the competition. this is a reality tv show, as long as we're entertaining enough we're guaranteed a spot in the merge at least, and nothing engages the viewers more than a 'will they won't they' dynamic. we'll be ratings gold!"
"alright, but why me? i don't hate you."
"i don't hate you either. in fact, i think you're pretty cool. it doesn't have to be a real rivalry, it's all an act. but if we can keep up the act for long enough, our 'rivalry' can evolve into something more, if you catch my drift. the plotline practically writes itself... plus, it'd be pretty funny to pretend to hate each other, right?"
"hmm. you make a good point. how can you guarantee we'll both make it to the merge?"
"that's down to the network. and, i guess, how well we sell ourselves to the audience. that's why i'm thinking enemies-to-lovers; it's compelling and marketable and people eat it up every time. the execs would never let two of their biggest audience retention generators leave the show too early."
"what about the lovers part? i barely even know you, and you want us to pretend to fall in love?"
"eh, semantics. how hard could it be? holding hands, long romantic walks across the beach. i know how to stage kiss, if that's an issue!"
also the genre savvy character is aroace, but their commitment to the plan overshadows their personal misgivings in faking their enamourment.
