Synopsis:

Osamu Hirota is an ordinary high school student. That is, until Soichi, a student from the next town over, takes him to a mysterious mansion with promises of meeting a seductress. Out walks a voluptuous woman named Miwako, who, as she undresses, reaches inside of Soichi and rips out his heart! The next day, Hirota awakens. Was it all a dream? Or have we just started to pull back the curtains on this dark and suspenseful story?

I just finished this manga and wow, I was so engaged until the end. It’s definitely one of those stories that sticks with you, and I’ll be thinking about it for hours. The writing is sharp, and there were so many moments where I had no idea where it was headed.

Spoilers below.

At first, I assumed it would follow that predictable path where the MC, after gaining some supernatural powers, would evolve into a typical shounen hero, fighting for good. Thankfully, it veered far from that trope and instead leaned into its tragic and horrifying elements right until the end, which is exactly the kind of manga I enjoy.

One twist that caught me off guard was Chika’s transformation - not just the physical change, but her true nature. She ended up being far more sinister than Miwako, which was unexpected. She initially came off as the kind of character who would just worsen the protagonist's situation by being overly “nice” and somewhat annoying, but she turned out to be much darker than I ever anticipated.

As for Miwako, I hated her at the start, but as the story unfolded, my feelings got complicated. She’s a villain through and through, but her presence kept the story moving in unpredictable directions.

Soichi’s character left me with mixed feelings, especially with the questionable dynamics in the story. Then again, it’s a horror manga, so moral grayness and discomfort are part of the package. The artwork, though, was absolutely stunning - it's hard to believe I’d never heard of this author before.

Overall, it's a great manga and is definitely worth checking out.

Eleventh Fleet AU - Admiral Karyn Faro

This was supposed to be an art post in honor of the anniversary of the release of the Thrawn Trilogy from Legends, but I'm only on the second book, so my opinion on the story has not yet been fully formed.

It was still the May weekend and after such a good cold I wanted a banal, basic rest.

However, I discovered such a thing as photobashes in concept art… And I decided to make a “sketch” for screenshots from the game. It turned out to be a very strange experiment, but the experience was really interesting…

Disclaimer: such a game does not exist… It is unlikely that it will exist.

An expression of a general sentiment that's finally coalesced into words during a discussion with my siblings:

I am an absolute sucker for liminal spaces, dreamcore, whatever you call that whole 'aesthetic'. The very specific yet vague childhood nostalgia it draws on, the loneliness, the emptiness, combined with a creeping sense that something isn't quite right here. I love it, and I eat it right up.

The millisecond you show what isn't right- add actual horror elements, or God forbid some sort of entity- the entire specific vibe that draws me in just evaporates. Endless empty corridors? Hell yes. But throw a blood splatter on the wall, and you've completely lost me and completely changed the overall tone.

AKA, that feeling when your sister professes her undying love for 'the backrooms', you get excited, but it turns out she just enjoys playing rainbow reskinned Slender The Eight Pages that coincidentally happens to be set in the poolrooms.

#that pool is eerie because it's totally empty and there's no clear exit! not because some neon creature is chasing me around!#this isn't to say that horror elements can't work well in that sort of setting #my belief is that horror is versatile enough to slot in just about anywhere in any genre #but for me the draw of liminal spaces is not horror and horror is not at all inherent to the 'aesthetic'#especially when it comes in the form of a hostile entity randomly chucked in. completely breaks the dreamlike immersion #stuff

#actually really difficult to find english language info about it. it seems they had like #a system where each performance had a different ending for the different boys LOL #so if you wanted to see kents ending youd have to come on a specific day etc #there was a dvd release which appears to have all the endings included which is neat. another reason to practice my japanese #id definitely like to check out the songs specifically. you know im already tracking down the cd. you KNOW #i do love amnesia. not the greatest game. theres complications with the artist too LOL #but it was a WILD ass game. especially for my first full otome game i had ever played #i still havent played anything else with this intense genre whiplash between routes #i didnt care much for shins romance but i loved his route because it was straight up just a mystery thriller #tomas was a horror and it was awesome obvs #kents was like a sweet and nice little romantic drama #ikki was like a normal showbiz drama complete with darker elements but also hes an accountant for some reason instead of a celebrity #which is really funny to me HKJDSHJKLDADSd and ukyos his own thing going on. his own intensely otome game-ass thing <3 #it was awesome. i need to play more otome games again so many have been released in the past couple years #i need my tonal and genre whiplash. i neeeeeeeeeed it

i believe all video games are art, but there is something special about the really short ones that feel like one person made it from home over a weekend, that don't have "good" gameplay as a focus, but have something to say or an emotion to convey that is best done through an interactive medium

i gotta say, 13 hours into omori, i don't get why people call it a horror game

#omori #like there's been occasional creepy scenes but they're usually quite short especially compared to the broader tone of the game #it does have a serious story. about like. trauma and failing friendships? that i'm really intrigued by as it slowly uncovers #like maybe it leans further into horror elements as the game goes on but i gotta say the elements that do exist aren't enough for me #to explicitly call it 'horror'#don't get me wrong i love this game and i love the spooky moments they're really fun!#i just went thru the train ride bit which was pretty fun i liked how the shadow at the end says the name of ur real-world character #even though ur playing as omori in the dream world #also no spoilers but it's unclear to me as of now if omori is just haunted by the memory of his sister's death #or if her spirit is Actually haunting him #also i had flowers and i thought maybe i cld put them on her grave but it didn't give me the option #also i loved the moment where kel talks about hero's depression and the way he himself was overlooked by h #their parents #man. i love all these characters so much #god the scene where aubrey fights you in the church and the whole time all the churchgoers are whispering about how terrible she is #i felt so bad for her man #also her design in the real world is cool as hell #also i actually lost to aubrey during the church scene but i didn't get a game over she just let me be and left #omori spoilers #i know the game is old-ish but my wording may have implied i wasn't going to spoil and i totally did #what i meant was don't tell me abt the future story of the game i'm only on 'three days left'

i can just never take any complaints about media like hannibal or whatever “normalising/romanticising cannibalism” too seriously. like yeah sure this practice that has an EXTREMELY strong taboo against it in many cultures throughout most of human history is gonna be brought into vogue by uh. gay horror enjoyers on tumblr. sure. big risk we should all be worried about.

#i just do not think this is a serious concern!#survival cannibalism incidents are pretty rare these days. funerary and ritual cannibalism are incredibly uncommon practices.#it's something that's widely considered immoral and viscerally repulsive #and the sort of social pressure needed to reverse that attitude would be pretty immense!#many of us on here enjoy a good romantic cannibalism metaphor #or appreciate it as a horror element or a plot device #and it’s not that uncommon as a fetish! especially if you consider vore under the same umbrella #but the people who are at all seriously interested in doing it irl as opposed to just having it as a fantasy #make up a such a small proportion of that group #with such a limited opportunity to ever actually follow through on it #that i really don't think this is something that the people pearl-clutching over cannibalism movies need to worry about

#in case it wasn’t clear my point here is that its really annoying to find an intriguing piece of horror media and see that all anyone really #wants to talk about is how good it is because it doesn’t use jumpscares or other such ‘cheap tricks’ to frighten/unnerve you #is it true that some horror movies/franchises overuse jumpscares(& such) to the point where they lower the value of the film?#yes. especially when mainstream corporations try to capitalize off horror.#are there jumpscares that add to the film and fit the tone of the movie? yes. especially in horror comedies (which i’ve noticed tend to get #taken less seriously than films with little to no comedic elements. but that’s not the point right now)#so to summarize #a horror medias usage of jumpscares is not a black-and-white indicator or the films worth because not all jumpscares are created equal and #pointing out that a piece of horror media you like doesn’t use jumpscares(and using that to show how ‘good’ it is) doesn’t make you sound #smart- you sound like a snob and i no longer want to converse with you #marble shoot #horror #horror movies

SO MANY things ghfg #Even being aware of my particular-ness I was still surprised to see how many were in the 'dislike' and 'not care' categories lol #Also it is so so so hard being an Action and Romance genre hater YET being a Fantasy and Historical genre lover ghhjb #EVERY fantasy story is also an action romance.. every historical story is a romance.. ouch oof taking psychic damage always #KIND of like how I LOOOOVE point and click mystery puzzle games but I also generally dislike the horror genre #but many point and click puzzle games I used to see would have horror elements or be 'scary' in some way #and it's like HHRgghh.. I just want to navigate a creepy old dilapidated mansion collecting secret codes from books but NOT in a scary way!#just like I want fantasy & historical content but NOT in an action romance way!!#Also.. NEOPETS.. I think my two favorites are both one of the most common choices and also one of the least lol #like EVERYONE loves aishas pretty much. I think they even won a favorite neopets poll on tumblr. But then nobody talks about vandagyres #or even cares about them (seemingly) and they have like so few clothes or good options because they're just irrelevant apparently #also I know it seems very uncharacteristic for the neopet that's basically A Cat to not be in my favorites but I just gjhjhbj #the eyebrows of the wocky bother me. it doesn't match everything else. Even in different paintrbsuh colors it will be #nice and cohesive and pastel or something and then two big dark lines. I aesthetically love thick dark eyebrows on people it just looks wei #rd on a cartoon cat. ANYWAY.. fun to think about #I love ranking things always #also curious to know if anyone has similar opinions... my fellow vandagyre lovers.. and action movie haters.. cutthroat kitchen fans.. :0c #AND as someone tired of romance in general & ESPECIALLY cardboard cutout cishet romances. yes I would of course like to see more lgbtq+#stories in media etc. The genre is just not placed higher because so much seems to be Modern Young Adult Romance which of course I hate #those themes lol.. NOT 'is immortal bt still acts like an irrational 15yr old bc plot'. what abt jaded eccentric elder romance? hmM? lol) ANYWAY #always manifesting a 'high fantasy historical mystery comedy drama satire psychological character study (with vampires)' into existence lol #if I could make a tv show set in my world... the sheer power I would have.. and nobody would watch it because it would have NO action or #romance (at least none that was serious/was not framed as lame/goofy/comedic) & would have intricate complicated worldbuilding and be very #VERY broadly unmarketable.. but I would finally have a show that meets my tastes lol

Okay ultimate opinion on Cowboys & Aliens - better than i remember it being Favreau gave us a great time with a fun ensemble Daniel plays a great queer gunslingers feral little meow meow haunted by his past, there is a lot of potential SO MUCH POTENTIAL but like so many films in 2011 it's absolutely not smart enough to say what it wants to so I'm gonna sit here with my secret better version that isn't just Daniel Craig being incredibly attractive and exasperated for 2 hours in leather while putting up with Harrison Ford.

#it had so many great potential commentary moments on what happens when the colonizers get colonized but obvs #its a cheesy sci-fi film so #but!! the use of practical and digitial effects was great the uncanny valley aspects were chefs kiss the touch of horror elements #and the hauntology of it that being a western naturally adds was fantastic the ideas of aliens giving rise to a whole mythos #and the whole archetype of the gunslinger/cowboy was honored very well by Daniel's character and most of them tbh #but Daniel's especially he was the perfect balance of tough masculine we exterior but compassionate and trusted by the weak #also very queer textual which i loved #and it didn't become a steampunk movie either it stayed very truly a western with aliens which i loved #and when favreau promises aliens he means ALIENS thrown at you like a pie to the face its so much fun
