Blaseball has been a constant background presence throughout pretty much the entirety of my adulthood life so far, and it feels weird to think the official source is gone.

I never meant to get into blaseball. At most, I figured it'd be a common interest between me and Moss (genusniebla). I picked my team entirely at random. And yet.

It kept me sane all throughout the initial lockdowns, when I didn't leave my house for an entire year. I tuned into the sim on nights I couldn't sleep, watched lore jams and liveshows and listened to podcasts about it while I gardened. Even when I started meandering into the rest of the world again, blaseball was a talisman, a comfort. The first patch on my backpack was a homemade one for the Hellmouth Sunbeams. About half the ones on my crustpunk pants were at least inspired by blaseball.

The music, most of all, has completely changed me. The Garages have been the soundtrack of my life, my number-one listened to artist, since I first discovered them. I skipped my own birthday celebration to watch the premiere of the Discipline album! There was a period of my life where I listened to solely (and I mean solely) the Garages for (at least) six months straight. I am going to continue to listen to the Garages until the day I die.

And the people!! Oh, the people. I've met so many wonderful friends and people because of this game. The community around blaseball has always been such a warm and welcoming environment (not just saying that because my team is the Hellmouth Sunbeams) and I'm truly lucky that this game has let me meet so many amazing people.

I hate to say it, but the game couldn't go on forever. It would lessen the impact of it. As far as I believe— we've won. Our teams have always won. We were always the driving force behind the cultural event of blaseball, the final bosses. It's over. No one has to play anymore.

I love Firewalker as a call sign for Harry, beyond its reference to Twin Peaks. The name evokes for me a phoenix, one who passes through flames that destroy their old form and emerges on the other side reborn anew.

Except Harry is such a shitty phoenix, oh my god. He's not reborn in majesty with plumage spread, ready to take flight. He returns from the edge of death as a hungover naked baby covered in slime and barely able to stand. His bender killed his old self, but his new self struggles to be born. That’s the real trial by fire.

Besides the initial call to Precinct 41 (after which I loved Jules’ beleaguered sigh at the name every time I called in), I only used the name Firewalker one other time. After igniting Cindy's graffiti, I had this exchange with Gaston:

GASTON MARTIN - "*Mon dieu*, you set it on fire!” He looks at the plaza. “What kind of policeman are you?”

YOU - "Firewalker. I walk in the flames."

And at this point – after the tribunal, after another near-death experience, after five days of helping the people of Martinaise – Harry has finally walked through the other side of the flames.

rambles under the cut:

SO what i sorta wanted to do was make. each parker flow into the next while subtly changing in between ,,, something something losing yourself to the game, becoming unrecognizable. so let's cover it parker by parker:

prime: i personally Love the hc that the coin is parker's mom. so prime is a lil ancient roman coded guy. he's SOOOO eldest sibling coded help. like he and his mom have a very strained relationship but also he thinks that if he just does whatever she wants she'll finally be proud of him :P whoops! and yeah v explosive anger (firewalker reference!), leading to ego, leading to. You Know. anyway. oh ALSO the parkers get younger as we progress so :))) they all STARTED at 19 but have varying degrees of age. so prime is in his mid-thirties.

parker ii: AH the most elusive of the parkers. SO: in my personal lore interp, parker ii was created when prime starting to push back against the coin more and more to the point where it was becoming a problem. and prime of course is very destructive and makes a mess when he's angry. so ii came about from me going "...what if parker just. said fuck it and left. didn't give a shit about ego just didn't wanna play the game anymore and found a way out." and that's exactly what my ii did. absolutely fucking vanished and quit the game for good. somehow. which uhhh MIGHT have been what caused prime to go apeshit ("why does ii get to leave and i'm stuck here?") and end prehistory. whoops. so i wanted to make them look very vagabond-y. somehow got even edgier than prime (impressive). also they're abt 30-ish. and have crazy gender stuff going on. possibly transfem. "but how is that possible if you hc the parkers as transmasc-" shhh. i don't know <3

park3r: GOD i loved doing this one. this parker is such a bitch and i love him. the first commissioner parker, created bc "OKAY so we gotta make him more young and impressionable and less unstable AND take him out of this game bc very clearly Bad Things will happen if he stays" so they made. a chronically online teenager and made them commissioner AMDNFM. god yeah i love this design he's sooo. just a 19-year-old trying to fill an impossible role and putting on a cool face about it. tragic, yes. but they're gonna complain the whole time and make everyone else miserable too. fully believe he was just scared and out of his depth the whole trial :( oops why are parkers iii and iiii so sad. i drew him closer to mid-20s here but honestly he could easily be younger

p4rker: LOVE this guy's lore so my hc is that after the trial that killed park3r it was like "uhhhh FUCK we need a new one of those. stat." so. they just. took park3r's incin'd body (ik it's not really Canon that park3r was incin'd he just Died but. let me have this) and like. stitched it back together. so p4rker is covered in burns and stitched together like frankenstein all over, and they just threw a mask on them like "see!!! new guy!!" the result of this being they didn't have. a whole ton of time to add shit like Personality, so p4rker is the outlier in that they're very naive and even polite? they don't understand what all the fuss is about them and just wants to be. nice? shame he didn't stick around long :/ the drippy bits are a little percolation nod! in this particular drawing he's like 20 :(

pvrker is. obviously the least human. park3r was more of a prototype of a commissioner, p4rker was a temporary placeholder at best, pvrker... was well and truly made For The Game. and his appearance reflects that. kinda a combination of iii's bluntness and 4's naivety. in-universe some people think he's the most sinister or whatever bc he's so directly Controlled By ILB Shit and that's not NOT true but like. give him a break guys he's like 6 days old he's new at this :(

ANYWAY that's so long holy shit. here are my rambles i hope u like them. im So Bad at blaseball lore so someone yell at me if something i put in there isn't accurate but. yeag :)

 got brain rot abut this idea and have to get it out- but firewalker being the one to infect windarcher. Specifically because I think it’s funny if the one cookie wind archer tried to desperately keep away from y/n cookie pre-infection was the one to reunite windarcher with y/nwalker during the infection.  Since we know wind has tension with fire, and probably was the most vocal of the legendarys about y/n not interacting with him.

Also because i think it’s funny as shit to imagine when windwalker finally comes too after being infected for the first time and first thing it sees other than y/n walker cooing over him is just firewalker leering behind them ominously scowling at windwalker the entire time bc of the special treatment hes getting. 

The tension is still there, but since the legendary walkers are kinda scarily possessive, it’s probably abit more reciprocated on firewalkers end this time.  

Heart Amongst Legends

(This does give me the opportunity to elaborate on the legendaries! Even if this did end up being an entire length fic. Hope that’s all good with ya!)

Legendaries who originally had not much reason to loathe Fire Spirit, now do so when the topic of you came up. When it wasn’t Sea Fairy that he had to compete against, to which she did an annoying job of butting in into time between the two of you she had no reason to be in, Moonlight can also prove to be an annoyance as well when she can also pop in unannounced when the other two couldn’t.

However, it was Windarcher that Fire Spirit considered his main rival. That no good protector of the forest would not hesitate to slander Fire Spirit by labeling him a fallen spirit that had no chance of purification, a cookie like you shouldn’t be seen with him.

Windarcher will make it a significant point among the other legendaries that it was for the best that you stick with them and just drop FS. It didn’t take much for Moonlight and Sea Fairy to be convinced if it meant more time would be open for them to spend time with you.

Sea Fairy wanted to gaze into the ocean waves as she leaned onto you, so she can feel the warmth of your heart. She had this feeling of security with you, like she knew she wouldn’t freeze anymore if she had you by her side. She didn’t want to suppress these feelings she had and wanted to express them as much as possible. She really would look at your face until dawn, she really does believe fate brought the two of you together. It was this that she steadily grew irritated with how much she would spot you AND Fire Spirit together 75% of the time. That SHOULD’VE BEEN time spent with her instead..

Moonlight was more willing to be patient and wait out her opportunities to take up ANY free time you have to be spent with her. But GOD did it hurt that many chances were quickly taken away by one of the three others, she didn’t want to intrude on their time spent with you and she thought they felt the same. If she ever did heard that the three others do in fact barge in on each other, yep, all bets are off. She could see you in her dreams, but she wanted those dreams to be a reality, where it was just the two of you. If this competition ramps up, she doesn’t think she can hold back her patience any longer.

Fire Spirit saw the competition he had with the others, but he didn’t mind it, he knew he had your heart in the bag. You were there for him at a time where he truly believed that he couldn’t find a soul that cared about him as much as you did, hence why he’s not keen to letting you go anytime soon. However, this meant drawing the attention and ire of the other legendaries, who were surprised to be seeing YOU, a cookie that they cherished with all their hearts, to be fond of Fire Spirit of all cookies. Windarcher was especially bothered with this news, why HIM?! Just when it seemed he had no further business with this cookie, he managed to crawl back into his life by meeting you. You really did see the beauty in every cookie if you were friends with FS, and that’s what they love about you~.

So the epic arguments began. Windarcher started the Fire Spirit slander, two can okay this game as time spent with you Fire Spirit would use to poke fun at Windarcher. Sea Fairy and Moonlight would take their shots in between the two, which aggravated both of them. This was their fight, a fight Windarcher felt like he wanted to end permanently.

Just when things were getting, they were going to get way worse…

Windarcher could only stumble backwards as the power of Firewalker was too much for him. He and several other cookies had engaged a group of walkers, this horde not proving much difficulty. Their objective was to clear the area of walkers, but in Windarcher’s, and he believed in the other legendaries’ minds too, their own personal objective was to hopefully find you amongst this apocalypse. Hopefully safe and sound as they obliterate any Walker who dared to try and touch you.

There was even this unofficial bet on who got the most vanquishes in the end. Winner gets a whole day with you. You better believe they’re just instantly vibe checking any Walker they can attack. Fire Spirit giving Windarcher a smirk as he lit some walkers on fire. He responded by shooting down a group of them with his arrows. The hunt was on.

“Feel the wrath of the sea!” “Ha, is that all?! Time to heat this place up!”

They cleared the first area with success as they made their way to the second. It was not good…

A horde with more familiar cookies who were a hell of a lot more dangerous then the last group, there was even a god damn Jellied Mandragora with them. The situation turned critical when the attack started, the power of this horde was far more substantial then anticipated. They almost seemed enraged.

As if they were guarding something, or someone, from danger.

“Something terrible is coming! I can sense it in the wind!” “Aaaah! Where did they call come from!?” “That mandragora is gigantic!” “This dream is a terrible nightmare! Something evil is coming…”

Windarcher couldn’t fall now, he had to find you! He shot down as many walkers as his bow would allow, which seemed to further anger the horde. He lost track of the other cookies, not paying attention as they were overwhelmed one by one. Windarcher felt like he was the last one standing as the walkers came at him with a much higher rate. Dodging, shooting, ducking. The horde slowly closed in as Windarcher felt himself slow and tire out, the horde just kept coming at him, it felt like there was no end to their numbers.

His efforts would be halted as he felt the area around him suddenly cast alight. He quickly moved out of the away and gazed upon his attacker.

He gazed into the eyes of his now infected adversary whom he was just fighting alongside with mere minutes ago, he saw..nothing. Jellywalkers and their immunity to pain meant none of Windarcher’s attacks fazed the fire wielding cookie much, if at all. He only watch as infected cookie set him ablaze with an infectious fire, Windarcher could only fall to the ground as he felt the virus consume him, thoughts of the forest and you being his last thoughts as he felt his vision go dark…

Even in his now Windwalker state, he could recognize the feeling of a certain someone shaking him awake as they cooed at him. The infected cookie opened his now jellybean eyes to see..you. Infected. Just like him. He leaned to the side a bit to see a familiar face scowling at him in annoyance as Y/N Cookie gave their attention to him. It was only right of them to introduce Windwalker to the horde where he saw more familiar faces.

If you thought things were bad before, they’re about to be here. Windwalker was treated warmly by Y/N Cookie for a while, which resonated with his past memories with you. All the more reason to stick by you and protect you with all his might, something that Firewalker now more openly objects to with growls and yells from him.

The immunity to pain meant they could get more physical with each other by punches and shoves, they’re stopped there before the incoming fight disrupts the horde.

Seawalker is also far more vocal with her Firewalker protests as well, but not to the level with Windwalker, she usually just keeps screaming and yelling at him. No way that even in jellification that she as gonna allow this moronic cookie take you away from her.

Moonwalker bides her time until all 3 are occupied until she swoops you up and away. Her infection meant she became more bold with her feelings as she would like to float you around to places in her arms. Sometimes she wished the horde left you alone for the night if it meant gazing upon the night sky aimlessly alongside you.

You could only hope they get along soon and learn to share amongst themselves, but when will that ever happen?

I have a question for you about me2, how did you feel about the firewalker missions? Because those missions had me damn near ripping my hair out because of them. I hated driving that stupid flying cars because I was always getting lost and it was so hard to jump 😫, even the David Archer mission which had a good story felt ruined to me because navigation in that car felt like a nightmare.

(I don't think this about the Liara mission, however. That chase sequence was fun)

I enjoyed them, didn't have much difficulty. I didn't know they were dlc bc I got the leg edition. To me, they were "those fun minigame missions :)" I played when I needed breaks from the story going too fast

I got the best of my pictures in those missions! The jumping shuttle allowed for neat angles.

But the novelty wore off quickly after the third stage, and it became another chore. They should've stuck with the fast and bouncy exploration aspect, but no0o0o0o0o, they just had to go and introduce precise platforming.

Throwing us in the most unpleasant locations known to mankind, the asscrack of the galaxy. Pit after pit after pit! I'm getting tired of pits. Oh my god, someone get me out.

I wanted to soar through a grassy field, not struggle to climb a mountain while operating a shuttle-shaped butterstick!

It reminded me of controlling the Mako in ME, which I missed a lot :( I've chalked up all the wobbly movement for every vehicle ingame to Shepard being a bad driver. Just a full-on hopeless case no matter how many training programs the alliance enrolls them in, It comes hand it hand with being a bad dancer, maybe.

I, however, never paid attention to the story plot in it–I just waddled along to wherever they sent me.

The ME2 mission I struggled with the most and had to replay so much bc I kept failing was the helping Tali's investigation one. The stage where you had to stay in the shadows because the sun was too luminous & radioactive–I kept failing and dying.

I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out where the explosives were and how to activate them once you got them. That mission really humbled me.

hehe... excellent... the short answer is it was an absurdist horror baseball simulator which ran near constantly during the onseason. i cannot summon a coherent explanation of it for the life of me so i'll put some assorted fun facts under the cut. i also tried to explain what my last post involving my ocs meant down at the bottom !

umpires can go rogue and incinerate players, but only during solar eclipses

names are completely randomly generated based on a pool of names. so while there were characters with very normal names there were also characters named like... jaylen hotdogfingers. boyfriend monreal. freemium seraph. you get the point

there were an assortment of fun weather games could be played in, such as birds, peanuts, solar eclipse, feedback, salmon, sun 2, and three separate coffee weathers. this is not all of them i just cannot be bothered to pull up a list

said weathers had unique effects. my personal favorite is salmon weather which made everyone time travel

none of the players had a shred of canon lore so a lot of the fun was coming together as a community to make shit up for them. a whole lot of this has been recorded on the wiki if that interests you!

there WAS a story going on, separated into two eras, discipline and expansion. i cant tell you much about discipline because i wasnt there but expansion featured a god named The Boss buying the league and destroying it in pursuit of making it marketable. it ended with everyone killing her. as she was represented by a png of a coin, when we killed her, all of the ingame currency was completely removed from the website. after that the league was slowly destroyed by a black hole (games continued during this)

one time los angeles got split into infinite separate versions of los angeles. i am not sure how it worked because this concerned a team that was not mine. they called these the infinite los angeli

during. i think it was that same event? every player on the los angeles team got renamed to wyatt mason. there was a whole thing trying to get everyones names changed back. several players names were never fully corrected. this was named the wyatt masoning

then there was the time multiple teams across the leaves got their own little clones of wyatt mason. there wereee 14 i think? this was named the second wyatt masoning. i personally like the seventh mason a lot

there was one time a team got reduced to one(1) active batter and the game continued like normal. that one active batter was just. in several places at once. ze hit a triple at one point. all by hirself

necromancy was a thing. oh necromancy was very much so a thing. the first time we necromancied someone she came back with a debt to fill and killed many people

then you had the time someone necromancied themself with zero consequences. they got incinerated but they had a modification (attribute) that gave them a chance to change teams at the end of every season and fucking apparently dying didn't turn this off? so they just walked out of the hall of flame (the afterlife) and onto a random team. they proceeded to die again that season (i believe), and then they walked out of hall again

there was lore about the Before Times. in these Before Times, a guy was given a modification called firewalker that was essentially Super Debt. he left a team? whole team became unstable. he got many players killed. there's a song about this!

speaking of music! a lot of fans came together to write blaseball themed music. if music about this game interests you, check out the garages (the band)! they have a LOT of music. some songs i recommend are bones to ohio, fight gods, ur too slow, free space, mike townsend (knows what he's gotta do), and dead ringer. i also like your favorite one to break a lot. zakri song.

ok thats enough fun facts for now this is a c.ob blog not a blaseball blog. BUT i will now explain what my post from earlier means!!

kelzil is an alternate. getting alt'd in the actual sim essentially just means your stats get rerolled, but a very common interpretation of getting alt'd is outright getting swapped out for an alternate universe version of yourself. this is the interpretation i like! getting alt'd early specifically means they've had time to get used to it, so they're mostly just hanging out.

zakri's deal is like... i already explained the incineration thing in the post so i don't think i need to say more on that. flickering means he's more succeptible to the effect of feedback weather, which is two players on opposing teams getting swapped mid-game. this usually results in getting moved around from team to team a lot. he then gets shadowed, which pretty much just means he's taken out of active play. i don't have a solid interpretation of what the shadows Are so i don't have much to say on that.

THEN he gets elsewhere'd, which entails getting swept [vague gestures] elsewhere by flooding. this also takes you out of active play but this time it's for a random amount of time - a player might be gone for a day, a player might be gone for multiple seasons. zakri is gone for multiple seasons. i personally think of elsewhere as very foggy and very wet and very lonely, especially when you're there for a while. zakri will not be having a very good time !

now, for unnamed kiv. so the rising stars are a team that were introduced at the end of expansion. long story short, there was a big special game between two teams made specifically for the game - the good team (the rising stars) and the evil team (the vault legends). the vault legends were, specifically, the boss' team. we didn't really get to pick who got put on what team, players were drafted through a specific process. if you got too popular you got put on the legends and if you were popular but not too popular you got put on the stars, iirc. so because i imagine unnamed kiv to be a generally good player, they get forced onto the stars. after this is when the sun exploded and the league was destroyed by a black hole btw. so like. unnamed kiv is having a great time i'm sure

Top 5 episodes of TXF that you dislike

Thanks for asking @scullys-scalpel! I had to go through the episode list to remind myself of the ones I didn't like, and there were more than I was aware of (looking at you seasons 9 and 11...). BUT I was asked for my top 5 dislikes, so I went with the ones I have a visceral negative reaction to.

1. #Gender Bender (#s1e14)

I first watched this episode when I very, very young (like we're talking 10 years old) and I just thought it was so fucked up on so many levels LOL. Not only did the whole sex-pheromone/handing touching thing weird me out but I was also very unsettled by Scully throwing up after escaping Brother Andrew's seduction (I mean, I get it). I have a weird phobia around vomiting and combined with this ep's weirdness my anxiety was ratcheted up, so it's not one that I have revisited.

2. #The Gift (#s8e11)

Which brings me to this ep lol. I just can't. I could barely get through the first airing and haven't watched it since.

3. #Firewalker (#s2e09)

I am putting this ep on my list because of how much it terrified me as a kid. I was about 11 years old when it aired and it gave me such nightmares LOL. I had built it up so much in my mind that I avoided it in syndication and hadn't watched it since its first airing. That is, until I was showing the series to my husband and he made me watch it. Now, as an adult, it is much-less scary than I remembered but I nevertheless still turned my head when the spores burst through people's necks. The scene that absolutely terrifies me (still to this day) is when Scully finds an infected Jesse who is making those inhuman gasping sounds. It's a shame that this episode resides in my fear-centre as I completely missed the fact that Bradley Whitford played Trepkos until this most recent viewing.

4. #Roadrunners (#s8e04)

The saving grace of this episode is, of course, Gillan's acting but that's really about it. I remember thinking "what the hell did I just watch?" after it aired. The concept is just so bizarre and I thought it was ill-timed what with Scully's pregnancy. I'm sure that the writers thought that it only enhanced the urgency of the storyline by putting her and her unborn child's life in peril, but after having just come off the nail-biting season premiere, I thought it was too much, too soon to put Scully through that trauma. Not to mention that such physical trauma would likely put her pregnancy in serious jeopardy. It was just such an ill-conceived episode.

5. #En Ami (#s7e15)

I immediately disliked this episode from the first time it aired as it raised very serious questions about Scully's consent and bodily autonomy, that weren't really dealt with (until that infamous, completely inappropriate, retcon job in season 11, which was such a cop-out IMO). I was well into highschool when this aired and even then I remember being so disturbed by the implications that Scully was drugged and later undressed (and god knows what else) by CSM while she was unconscious. Not only that, but I thought the whole 'adventure' was completely out of character for her and such a slap in the face to Mulder. Sure, he's ditched her countless times before without rhyme or reason, but what she did was beyond the pale: no matter her so-called 'for humanity' motivation, she went off with the ONE PERSON who has SINGLE-HANDEDLY orchestrated so much destruction in Mulder's life. Obviously this created some very serious tension between them (that, I have to admit, is handled so deliciously in fanfic), but I found it jarring that there could be this level of betrayal in one episode (so shortly after Mulder lost his mother and put the mystery of his sister to rest) and a (presumed) consummation of their relationship a mere two episodes later. It just doesn't compute for me. I understand that the impetus for this episode was Bill Davis wanting an opportunity to work more with Gillian, and kudos to that I guess, but the storyline and its implications are so problematic that I just can't respect it.
