#and harry sullivan. not that the doctor cares
took me longer than i expected because uni, but i’ve finished part 3 of that regeneration-except-the-doctor-is-an-extradimensional-insectoid-timesquid-who-literally-moults-off-their-old-body fic! this one’s much less painful than last time, there’s no battles for their companions’ lives or nightmarish political needle-threading, just waking up nice and safe in the tardis with their friends just outside, the walls covered in moulting acid, unit on high alert, everyone on the verge of panic because they exploded into a big ol’ squid... nothing to worry about
today’s deleted scene: there was originally a bit in the doctor’s conversation with sarah jane where she mentioned that when they were flailing through the unit hallways they didn’t seem to know where they were going and they kept bashing into walls and they wouldn’t stop screaming, and it was... honestly about as terrifying as discovering they were secretly an eldritch abomination this whole time. the doctor managed to reassure her through a mix of white lies and sincere thanks, and then they hugged. it didn’t really fit the direction i ended up taking the scene, though - resolved it a bit too neatly - so i cut it. they probably do have a conversation to that effect later in the tardis though

The Third Doctor is so they/them coded to me so here's how I think the UNIT crew would react to them explaining singular they pronouns:
Sergeant Benton: He literally could not care any less. He's already dealing with a person who's way smarter than him, is an alien, and has never told him their name. He does not have the strength to give a shit or question anything the Doctor says anymore. Punches a guy who insults the Doctor's dress sense in a pub a few weeks later.
Captain Yates: Has a gender crisis for about two weeks and is ridiculously proud of himself when he comes out the other side of it with a good grasp on what it means that he's comfortable with he/him pronouns. Absolutely rips on anyone who gets the Doctor's pronouns wrong.
The Brig: Literally nothing changes between them. He'd already been quietly transferring staff who said homophobic things back to the regular military.
Liz Shaw: Figures it out on her own and starts using the right pronouns for them out of the blue. Doesn't ask questions. Once she's left UNIT and gone back to Cambridge, she occasionally gives out the Doctor's phone number to trans students. They always answer the phone.
Jo Grant: Literally all she's ever wanted is a gay best friend to talk about boys with. This is the happiest day of her life.
Sarah Jane Smith: Begs the Doctor for an interview for a queer journal she occasionally writes for. Finally gets one out of Four, who cannot take it seriously to save his life.
Harry Sullivan: Actually incapable of understanding despite being semi-canonically bisexual. He finally gets his head around it after the Doctor regenerates, which doesn't help much because Four alternates between he/him and "I don't remember what a pronoun is"
The Master: Fellow Time Lord, doesn't give a shit. Does relentlessly tease them for getting stuck in the 70s and/or 80s in an incarnation that needs to explain 21st century gender politics to every person they meet.

Rose Tyler And Classic Who
The First Doctor- a fight and flirt relationship. they would fight so much so often, yet strangely Rose would flirt with him and leave him completely flustered
Susan- they would be besties. Rose would introduce her to modern day fashion, and they would end the patriarchy together. all in one day. (because Susan deserved better and we all know she and Rose are both feral wolf raised children)
Ian- they would talk shit about the Doctor together. and he would hold her back from fistfighting a sexist/racist/homophobic dude then punch him in the face immediately so she doesn’t get in trouble. they would totally have a sibling relationship.
Barbara- they would have a love hate relationship. Rose would constantly fight with her, but they would both make up and be girl bosses over everyone else. she would also help Ian and Barbara get together.
Vikki- two words. feral. children. they would physically get into fights with anyone who dared treat other people lesser.
Steven- they would sit together and talk about cute men, while they get thrown in jail on every planet they go to.
Dodo- Rose would definitely treat her like a younger sister, and Dodo would hate and love it. they totally give each other fashion advice and do the other’s hair.
Ben and Polly- Ben would treat her like his sister, and Polly would help her take over the world.
The Second Doctor- joking and singing. These two would sing together everywhere, with the Doctor playing the recorder. they would also be joking and flirting everywhere they go, yet wouldn’t acknowledge it at all.
Jamie- you can’t not tell me they would absolutely joke about the Doctor, make fun of him, and beat people up together.
Victoria- automatic mother/older sister role. doesn’t matter which one, she automatically takes her into her care with a mentor figure affection, and Victoria would be hesitant at first but eventually come to see her as one of the two.
Zoe- they fight a lot, more than Rose and Barbara would, but it’s more of two extremely strong women with similar personalities that, once they stop fighting and finally click, makes everyone wish they kept fighting.
The Third Doctor- would call her “my dear Rose” and take her out on car rides very often. she would love to help him in his lab, singing along with him when he sang. they would flirt, but it’s seems old fashioned, and less joking
Alistair- would fight in a fatherly daughter way, but drink tea together every afternoon no matter what.
Mike- talk about cute men together, and spar together, and are almost tied at the hip whenever she’s at UNIT
John- chills with Mike and Rose, and has a very brotherly relationship with her.
Jo- they flirt with everyone, wear mini skirts and kick ass together all the time. they would absolutely be besties.
Sarah Jane- same with Zoe, except when they do click the entire world shakes in it’s boots.
The Fourth Doctor- they have a very jokingly relationship, flirting and teasing each other almost every time they see each other. she also will constantly wear his scarf whenever they’re out.
Harry Sullivan- he would become the older brother she never had, and she would help him with coming to senses with more modern views. he always tries to sacrifice himself for her, of which she always patches him up afterwards.
Leela- Rose would beg her to teach her some of the fighting skills, just like how Rose would teach her a bit of stuff from her time on earth, and they would have a shit load of fun together.
K9- calls her Rose, with her insistence. best dog/girl duo ever.
Romana- in her first body they would fight. a lot. Rose would think of her as too posh and stuck up, and Romana would think of her as below her. her second body, however, they would slowly start to become friends, and by the time they separate would be extremely close.
Adric- he acts like a brat to her, which she quickly puts a stop to and they become a sibling duo, constantly bickering with each other and driving the Doctor mad. but, they have that true sibling relationship where it’s “only I can insult them and we’ll insult you together”
Tegan- fashion and music buddies. they constantly share and talk about their taste in fashion, music, and women(because nobody in Doctor Who is straight) 100% gossip buddies
Nyssa- like Victoria, Rose becomes an older sister sort of figure to Nyssa after her planet dies. but, Rose also loves to learn about things from Nyssa about science, and Rose also loves to teach her about earth during her time.
The Fifth Doctor- puppy love. that’s what it is. they would have an almost childish love, the type that just gives and gives freely. they would argue very little, yet when they do they make up almost immediately.
Turlough- Rose would definitely figure out what he was doing with the Black Guardian, and change him earlier than cannon. they would have a fun little sibling bond, making fun of each other and making jokes a lot.
Peri- gossip and joke buddies. the two make fun of the Doctor, that random dude who was rude, you name it. they share fashion advice, and Rose beats people up while Peri yells at them. it’s a nice little match.
The Sixth Doctor- they would absolutely have the same relationship as Rose does with the Ninth Doctor, that joking around one with the undertones of something completely serious between the two.
Mel- Rose would definitely eat shit food just to spite her off, then feel bad about it and either do one of her workouts or eat something she made. it’s a daily occurrence.
The Seventh Doctor- they would have a mix of Three and Two, a very old fashioned type of love but the mix of flirting everywhere they go. all the time. it pisses of Ace a lot.
Ace- an older sister type of role, Rose constantly blowing up stuff and beating people up with her. they would take down the government using nothing but their brains, their fists, and Ace’s homemade explosives.
The Eighth Doctor- very flirty-touchy-close romance. he constantly tucks her arm in his, or wraps an arm around her, or hugs her randomly. it’s more of Tenrose with a more innocent tone to it.
Grace- they would be friends. not terribly close, but when the Doctor would do something weird or stupid they would exchange a glance of shared amusement and tiredness.
And I know there’s more, but I haven’t heard the audiobooks yet so I don’t want to make any assumptions.

The 4th Doctor knits---
Every time a companion is about to step a toe out of the TARDIS, they immediately get a multicolored sweater or scarf or beanie or pair of gloves shoved into their arms, because "humans are so dreadfully intolerable of the cold" and he has to take care of them. But he never really asks for them back so the general consensus is "I guess this is mine now??"
Harry Sullivan has more bizarrely-patterned sweaters than he can feasibly wear in the rest of his life
Sarah Jane gets a pretty matching set of a hat and gloves and a sweater with a lopsided owl on it
Leela absolutely loves scarves and once she admits this, she gets a new striped scarf almost every other day
Romana was promptly given a ridiculous hat with two giant pompoms on the top and tassels that nearly reach her knees, but she reluctantly wears it because it's very good at keeping her ears warm
Adric has a large collection of gloves, all a little too big for his hands
Nyssa has a thick hooded cardigan that doesn't quite match with any of her outfits
4 tries to act aloof but is actually very concerned about what they think, and will sulk if they don't wear them, even if he brings them to someplace very warm because he keeps forgetting that humans get warm too

give me a crossover au of the last two media you consumed
iruma and Harry Potter >:D
SO a hogwarts au where iruma is a secret squib.
now. squibs are useless to magical society because they can't do magic. they do, however, hold greater value than common muggles because while they aren't able to use magic, they still have magical blood. therefore:
squibs are like one level above house elves.
squibs are kept secret
if a squib is kept secret, they can die under mysterious circumstances and no one will know or care
killing a squib means less undesirable blood to potentially ruin magical bloodlines
magically powerful blood > no magic blood
blood magic isnt banned
squibs are the ideal human sacrifice.
so iruma is a squib who's been adopted by headmaster sullivan and taken into the school as a means of protecting him, because his parents were about to make a blood sacrifice out of him to encourage eternal life or wealth or something. but they botched the ritual so it releases a large energy flare and sullivan, being a concerned citizen, checks it out and just, snatches iruma away.
sullivan doesn't want to keep this kid a secret his whole life, because that's just an upgrade from when iruma was kept a secret, given some 'kind words' ("please") and treated like a house elf.
sullivan also decides he can't just publicise that iruma is a squib. that's just asking for someone to like, kill the poor boy. not that he isn't powerful enough to stop any attacks, but better safe than sorry amirite
logical course of action: send iruma to babyls (hogwarts), pretend he's a Normal Wizard Child and hope for best teehee
nothing could possibly go wrong, right?
[ iruma manages to get azz on the day he visits diagon alley bc he accidentally beats the shit out of azz who is a puny 11 year old wizard boy easily impressed by physical strength, which the average witch/wizard does not bother to cultivate. clara is a distant relative of the lovegoods who finds herself attached to iruma and azz when they help each other escape the short yet ominous plague doctor who patrols the corridors at night. iruma kicks witch ass and ends up as minister of magic and proves that squibs are cooler than witches by, as a squib, heading his harem of powerful witches to take over the world ]

Genesis of the Daleks (Maybe the Daleks just need a Jelly Baby), Conclusion
[All images are owned by the BBC. Please don’t sue or EXTERMINATE! me]
(All videos are thanks to Doctor Who)
PREVIOUSLY ON…
The Doctor (in his fourth incarnation), along with Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, have been brought to the planet Skaro by the Time Lords to prevent the creation of the Daleks. Skaro has been ravaged by a war between two factions: the Kaleds and he Thals.
Davros, the leader of the Kaled scientific corps, showed what the Kaleds (their genetic makeup mutating due to centuries of chemical, biological, and atomic weapons) would evolve into, a being he called a Dalek. He then manipulated the genetics of the Daleks to remove compassion, pity, and remorse. When the Kaleds attempted to stop him, he gave the Thals the means to destroy them, then set the Daleks on the Thals!
This caused the remaining scientific corps to begin rebelling against Davros. The Doctor, Sarah, and Harry attempt to sneak into Davros's bunker to stop him, but are captured. Davros threatens Sarah and Harry's life unless the Doctor explains how the Daleks are defeated in the future so he can change the Daleks to prevent this!
Now, on with the episode, starting with Part 5! If you would like to watch the episode, it’s available on BritBox or Tubi.
Tumblr media
The Doctor eventually gives in, giving Davros the means to change history. Davros stores the Doctor’s recording and prepares to implement it into the Daleks’ upgrades. As Harry and Sarah are taken to their cells, Davros wants some alone time with the Doctor (ewww…)
Meanwhile, Harry and Sarah are thrown into a cell with Gharman.
Tumblr media
Fortunately for Gharman, one of his allies attacks his guard.
Meanwhile in the interrogation room…
youtube
Nyder then briefs Davros about those speaking against him (they likely outnumber those who are loyal)
Tumblr media
Instead Davros allows the rebellion to continue to grow for some reason and tells Nyder to put the Doctor in a cell with the others. Meanwhile, he has recalled the Daleks wiping out the Thals.
Tumblr media
…that can’t be good.
Nyder gets to the cell, but…
Tumblr media
…Gharman’s cohort was successful. Nyder throws the Doctor at Harry and flees. Gharman prepares to mobilize the resistance, but the Doctor warns him that Davros is ready. Gharman doesn’t seem to care and continues as planned.
Meanwhile, the Doctor, Sarah, and Harry head to the main laboratory to get the Time Ring (remember that?) and the recording.
Meanwhile, Ghaman’s revolution is growing tremendously.
Tumblr media
And what is Davros doing about this?
Tumblr media
He tells Nyder to open negotiations (Surrender doesn’t seem Davros’s style. I wonder what he’s up to?)
Meanwhile, in their search for the Time Ring, the Time Travelling Trio discover…
Tumblr media
Since Davros won’t listen to reason and make the Daleks more peaceful, the Doctor intends to destroy the incubators and end the Daleks before they can truly become a threat!
Later, the rebel leaders meet with Davros. They demand that the Daleks that have been tampered with be destroyed or they will place Davros in custody and do it anyway. Davros asks for time to think it over.
Elsewhere, The Doctor, Harry, and Sarah have reached the incubation chamber. They just need to set the explosives. Just one teeny tiny issue…
Tumblr media
Indeed he is! Goooooood lu-uuuuuuuuck!
In the interrogation room, Davros has agreed under one condition…
Tumblr media
Davros wants to plead his case, and then a vote to be taken on the direction that will be taken. Davros promises to abide by the decision (You think it’s a trap? I think it could be a trap!) The leaders agree to meet with Davros in an hour. After the rebels leave…
Tumblr media
And what of the Doctor?
Tumblr media
OH SHIT!
On that note, Part 5 comes to an end. On to the conclusion!
Harry and Sarah manage to pry the fledgling Daleks from the Doctor’s neck and slam the door. Now all that’s left is to detonate the explosives.
youtube
(It’s funny…he had no issue forcing Davros to order what he was hesitating to do. I guess he didn’t want to get his hands dirty?)
At the meeting, Davros makes his case. As everyone’s attention is on Davros…
Tumblr media
…Sarah nicks the Time Ring and the Doctor’s sonic screwdriver.
Then Davros’s pitch winds down with…
Tumblr media
…a self-destruct button that would destroy the entire bunker except the room they’re all standing in. He urges any member of the rebellion to step forward and press it, if that’s what they truly want. Sadly, no one steps forward.
Then Gharman proposes destroying Davros’s Daleks and starting anew with ones who have not been altered to be without compassion.
Meanwhile, the remains of the Thals (remember them?) slip in and plant explosives around the bunker entrance. Sarah’s Muto friend rushes in to warn her and the others while the charges are planted. He’s warned that they’ll blow the charges regardless when they’re ready.
In the meeting the vote is cast, with those who are loyal to Davros joining him on the other side of the room. Harry then sees Nyder slip out, so the three follow. They catch up to Nyder and overpower him (but the Doctor unknowingly drops the Time Ring) They force Nyder to take them to the recording. They then destroy it, but Nyder gets away, locking them in. Mission accomplished. All they have to do is touch the…
Tumblr media
…oops.
Sarah finds a monitor that shows it’s a good thing they went after Nyder as…
Tumblr media
THE RAT BASTARD!
I’m sure you can guess what happens next.
Tumblr media
Then Sarah’s Muto friend finds them and warns them of the demolition. The Doctor quickly gets the Time Ring, then sends Harry and Sarah to safety with the Time Ring.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately…
Tumblr media
The Doctor has to beat a hasty retreat! However, the Dalek bumps into the wires, touching them together and causing the detonation!
Meanwhile in the conference room…
youtube
[NOTE: Despite all appearances, this is not the last time we see Davros. I have no clue how, but I’m sure they came up with some deus ex timey-wimey bullshit to explain it.]
So with the delay, hopefully the universe will have a bit more time to prepare.
Tumblr media
As an addition, I would like to present what Doctor Who writer and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams may have written about the Daleks if not for copyright laws.

A Meeting of Minds Extended Author's Notes
Spoilers for my fic A Meeting of Minds! Please go read that first.
This fic was an interesting one, since it’s for a corner of Who I haven’t quite touched before: fan Doctors. A Meeting of Minds is based on a pitch for an animated Doctor Who series, drafted up by I.N.J. Culbard during the Wilderness Years but never presented to the BBC. You can read his pitch and the story behind it here; it’s only a couple paragraphs and the rest of these notes will be me talking about how I adapted said ideas, so please do read it.
Okay, now that you’ve read the Culbard pitch, let’s talk about it.
Character fusions are interesting. It’s not made clear in the pitch whether the resultant fusion of the Doctor and Master has one unified personality or both the Doctor and Master’s personalities hanging around, but the comparison to the Fourth Doctor and the Watcher fusing to make the Fifth Doctor makes me think it’s the former. Let’s be honest: he probably meant the latter, but multiple personalities is a sensitive subject I don’t feel qualified to write on and the trope of the Evil Alternate Personality needs to stay dead for a few goddamn centuries at least, so that option was off the table from the start.
So, the Doctor and the Master regenerate together into one body, with one resultant mind. How would that happen? The presence of the Fourth Doctor’s scarf and Harry Sullivan’s jacket implies it happens during, well, the Fourth Doctor’s era. Of course, we know that the Fourth Doctor never met the non-crispy Thirteenth Master on screen due to Roger Delgado’s unfortunate passing, but this is fanfic so I say it can happen. Harry’s jacket doesn’t necessarily imply Harry’s presence- maybe he left it in the TARDIS wardrobe- but I like Harry Sullivan a lot and Four/Sarah/Harry is one of my favorite TARDIS teams so I decided to set it roughly around Terror of the Zygons. Terror, of course, marks the end of the UNIT era (depending how you classify it), and a tipping point in the Doctor’s overarching characterization: he’s sick of running around doing the Brigadier’s bidding… so he takes off, and that’s that.
Harry’s stint as a companion seems very short-lived, with each of his stories leading directly into the next and thus apparently cutting him off from any other adventures with Sarah and the Doctor during the UNIT era, but Scratchman ignores this continuity and thus so can I.
The rest really wrote itself. The Doctor, in his fourth incarnation and traveling with Harry and Sarah Jane, merges with the Master in a freak regeneration accident. How? Because the Master was trying to steal the Doctor’s remaining lives. I didn’t give an explicit reason, just implied that for whatever reason the Master feels the need to get more regenerations, now. Why is the resulting person wearing Harry’s jacket? Because Harry died, of course.
Sorry Harry, I love you, but this was the most interesting way this could go. Harry’s death cuts off the Fourth Doctor’s arc before it can even get off the ground- literally- by giving the Doctor a slap-in-the-face reminder of why he runs around protecting the Earth: because he cares about the people on it.
Just one problem: is this person the Doctor? Or the Master? Or neither?
Of course, the original pitch was for Doctor Who: The Animated Adventures, not The Master: The Animated Adventures. I left it somewhat open-ended for our poor nameless Time Lord who’s not quite sure who he is, but of course he’s the Doctor. At least, mostly. He has the Master’s memories, too, and had the rather ruthless impulse to loot the corpse of a friend- even if I’d say that’s not outside the realm of possible actions for the Doctor.
But ultimately, the probably-Doctor chooses to run towards the Doctor’s TARDIS, not the Master’s. Harry’s death hits him hard. He doesn’t want to show his new face to Sarah Jane and the Brigadier, because he cares about how they think of him, and fears that they’d be revolted by his fusing with the Master. (And perhaps because he doesn’t know if he’s safe to be around, not with how close to the surface his ruthlessness is.)
But why is it the Doctor who had far more influence over the merge than the Master? Well, because he was the one supplying the regeneration energy. The Doctor and the Master got glued together, but the Doctor was also the glue. So if anything, the Doctor absorbed the Master.
…Yeah, okay, can we talk about how that’s kind of horrifying? Character merges always carry a sort of existential horror. There were two people, now there’s one, that implies some kind of death, right?
Yeah. I don’t think it’s just Harry’s death that will have a lasting effect on this Doctor, but also the fact that he essentially killed the Master by accident as well. Sure, he has the Master’s memories and some of his personality, but there’s no one left in the universe running around calling themselves the Master. They are effectively dead.
I don’t plan on writing a follow-up to this, but I can at least imagine the future of this Doctor. The Culbard pitch mentioned a story with Sea Devils in 1960s Brighton; I think this Doctor sticks around Earth, at least spatially, but hopping up and down its timeline as a self-appointed protector, maybe with just the slightest undertones of implied ‘ownership’ as a lingering mindset from the Master. I think it would take him a few adventures to gain the confidence that he’s the Doctor, not the Master, and that it would be safe for him to take a companion. Maybe he reunites with Sarah Jane, or maybe he needs a new friend for a fresh start. That’ll be for y’all to imagine.
Miscellaneous thoughts:
-The shift from past to present tense was originally at the moment where the new incarnation decides to run. I changed it to be at the POV switch to the new incarnation, since that made a lot more sense, and in doing so thought that removing contractions from the prose would fit as a quirk of this serious-faced new incarnation. He doesn’t get any spoken lines, but the implication is that he doesn’t use contractions when speaking.
-I planned to include a line saying that the new incarnation referring to himself with the ‘he’ pronouns was only out of habit, but I don’t think the Doctor or Master thinks about themselves in English, so that pronoun in the prose is due to the the fact that the TARDIS is translating their thoughts for us, the viewers/readers. I felt that they/them would’ve left it ambiguous whether the new incarnation was one personality or two, which is something I did want to definitively settle, so I stuck with “he.”
-This was my first time writing Delgado's Master, hopefully I didn't make him overly hammy. If I did: my bad.
Thanks for reading all through my rambles, I hope you enjoyed this weird little fic!

!! SEEKING FOR A RP PARTNER !!
Marvel, Star Wars...
~•~
[ Hello, I am currently in quest of finding a serious, open minded and invested roleplay partner who would be willing to entertain double rps depending on my mood ( I won’t necessarily ask you for a rp if I’m not feeling like handling two of them ). If interested, make sure to check the infos below and read one of my fics to get a peek of my writing style! ]

Classic Who Whumptober 2021 #17: “Please Don’t Move!”
Harry
“Well, there are supposed to be injured people here…” Harry muttered to himself as he carefully walked through the factory. He didn’t hear or see anyone, other than the UNIT soldiers who had come with him. They had spread out to find people more quickly.
“Hello?” he called out, hoping to hear a response. He didn’t, which meant one of three things. There was no one here, they were dead, or they were unconscious. If it was the first option, then why were they called here to assist in the first place? Not that he preferred injured or possibly dead people, but those options wouldn’t mean anything obviously shady was going on.
“Hello?” Harry called again. Again, he received no answer.
He entered another room, a large office. “Anyone here?” He sighed at the silence, and moved to the door at the other side, no doubt leading to another corridor or part of the factory.
Harry froze at the loud click under his feet. He slowly looked down, seeing a pressure plate under his right foot. “Oh no… what kind of trap?” He glanced around, taking care to not even lift his heel a centimeter off the pressure plate.
“Why is it always me who puts a foot in it?” Harry took a deep breath as he looked for whatever the trap could be. Hidden automatic firearms? Poison blowdarts or deadly arrows, like some ridiculous adventure film? Or a good old-fashioned explosive tripwire? Option one or three were far more likely, but he couldn’t see any set-up guns, which really left option three.
Harry very slowly turned to the door he had come through and picked the radio from his pocket. He was about to speak into it when he saw a soldier round the corner to come into the office. “Don’t come in!”
“Sullivan?” the soldier responded, though he did immediately stop.
“Just… please, don’t move!” Harry sighed deeply. “I’m standing on a pressure plate. No doubt a trap set for us.”
The soldier nodded, and radioed for a couple other to come to their position.
“I wouldn’t come in here yet.” Harry glanced down. “I didn’t see it until I stepped on it. I heard the click.”
“Does rather blend in with the floor,” the soldier noted.
“Exactly. There might be others in here. Maybe even elsewhere in this place, too.” Harry grimaced at the thought. But if one room was booby-trapped, it was just as likely others were, too. “I certainly hope not.”
Two more soldiers stopped outside the office door.
Harry informed, “I don’t see any guns that could be wired to this plate, so I expect it’s an explosive device somewhere.” He shook his head, remembering his, Sarah, and the Doctor’s time on Skaro, where shortly after arriving, the Timelord had stepped on a landmine. It had been heart-racing then, with him helping the Timelord off of it, and now that it was him on a similar device, his heart absolutely pounded in his chest. “What to do, what to do…”
“Don’t worry, Sullivan, we’ll find the source and disarm it.”
“I’ll do my best to just… stand here and not move, then.”

Alfie and Dr. Harris Pt. 2
Pt. 1
He lay on the edge of consciousness in a light green room for a long time. At one point his thoughts began to coalesce into words again and the memories returned prompted by the stinging of the cuts on his face from the struggle. They had pushed his head so hard into the gravel. Instantly he felt sickening shame when he thought about the way those men had held him down and drugged him but then that familiar sense of dread began to pool in his stomach. A mental inventory registered that leather straps held his limbs to the bed. He tugged on the straps a few times before recognizing the futility. He humphed into the mattress in bitter frustration only to look up and see a face looking in on him from the window in the door.
His cheeks flushed red with embarrassment as the door unlocked and the man let himself in without knocking. How long had he been watching him?
It was the doctor from the entrance. He remembered this. A man in his forties or fifties, it was hard to tell because he had bright features but lines around his eyes and grey emanated from the edges of his hairline. His suit was well-tailored and his shoes were unscuffed. He was meticulously dressed.
Alfie had never been meticulously dressed. He was careful and his clothes were always clean but well worn and mended. For his entire life, it seemed his pants were always just a touch too short as he grew through the foster system. He never fixated on it. He just did the best he could, combed his hair, darned the newest holes, and went on with his life.
Now his eyes flicked down at his prone figure. He had been changed into light blue cotton pajamas, the thought of being dressed like a doll while he was blacked out unnerved him and again that plummeting feeling took his stomach.
“Hello again, Alfred. I trust you have calmed down now?” The man raised his eyebrows in question.
He managed a small nod in response, his cheeks still burning from being observed as he struggled with the restraints. Such a little act felt so… invasive?
“Well then, I am glad we can proceed. I didn’t have the chance to introduce myself before. I am Dr. Harris. I am one of the head psychiatric physicians here at Woodford Psychiatric Hospital.”
He pulled up a chair from beneath the window to be a few feet from the bedside in Alfie’s line of view.
“Um, these-” Alfie tugged slightly at his wrists, “-Aren’t necessary. Can you take them off?”
Dr. Harris looked down at the restraints and then slowly back up to his face. A chill ran up Alfie’s spine as he couldn’t help but feel like he was being studied still.
“Let’s see how this session goes and then we can decide. You had quite a rough start, I don’t want to give you something you can’t handle right now.”
Alfie looked at him quizzically, he could handle being not tied to his bed, he wasn’t raving mad or helpless, “I’m fine really, I won’t do anything.”
Dr. Harris looked at him for a moment as if to convey his annoyance before dismissing the comment and continuing, “So, this is an introductory meeting. I want to get to know you, Alfred,” He flipped open a manilla colored file on his lap and skimmed for a moment before looking up, “So let’s talk about why you are here, shall we? I see you have been remanded into our care for the murder of Delano Sullivan... You were friends with him?”
“He was my best friend.” Alfie paused, “And I didn’t kill him.”
The doctor clicked his tongue, “It says here it was a pretty airtight case, no alibi, roommates and your history of mental illness documented by social services as a child… Why don’t you tell me about that?” he smiled genially at the end of his sentence in a unnatural way.
“What? The mental illness?” Alfie glared at him, he was treating his tragedy like he was describing the trivial plot of a children’s book, no concern whatsoever that they were discussing the death of the only living person that cared for him.
The doctor nodded in response with another pleasant smile.
He sighed, “I’m not sick. I haven’t- I haven’t seen anything for years. That was only a few times when I was fifteen. The people I was living with- my foster parents at the time- overreacted. They made it worse.”
“But you admit you have a history of mental illness?”
“I- I don’t know. The things I saw felt so real. But they went away. Like I said- I haven’t seen them in years.”
“What did you see then? The notes from the child services doctor don’t say.”
Alfie didn’t want to tell this man. He didn’t want to let him into his head. He looked away to the light from the paned window cascading across the floor in shapes.
“Alfred, if you don’t cooperate you will not lose those restraints any time soon.” Dr. Harris intoned, “I hate for us to get off to a bad start however there are consequences for misbehaving here. But also rewards. If you speak with me and submit to treatment your life could be very comfortable, even happy. But you must cooperate.”
The vague threats were more effective than Alfie would have liked to admit. For the second time since the conversation began, he felt an inexplicable chill.
But he wasn’t just going to unravel for this man.
“I don’t remember,” He responded stone-faced.
The pleasant facade the doctor had kept for the conversation tugged a little bit as his smile dissolved.
“Alfred, are you refusing to cooperate again?” His tone dried out into something sharp and brittle.
“I told you, I. Don’t. Remember.”
“We aren’t going to get very far if your memory fails you like this.” He took off his wire-rimmed glasses and polished them slowly with his handkerchief before speaking again, “Since you don’t remember. I am going to end our first session today. Give you some time to think about it. These details are important in proceeding with your treatment. When I return tomorrow I expect you to have something to tell me.”
He stood and put his chair back as Alfred watched in sullen silence. Before he knocked on the door to be let out by the orderly Dr. Harris looked back at him still tethered to the bed, “And I don’t think we should take the restraints off just yet. Don’t want to take any chances this early.”
Alfie watched him speak with the nurse and orderly outside before striding off. To his surprise, the nurse and orderly reentered the room.
The nurse held a tray but neither of them greeted him as they came to his bed.
“Um, what is that?” Alfie strained against the leather ties slightly to create more space between him and them.
“The doctor thinks you need a little more time to calm down before your next session, this will help,” the nurse replied impassively as she prepared a familiar-looking syringe.
“I- I don’t need that- really.” He tried to move again but the large orderly grabbed his arm to pin to the bed.
“Don’t worry buddy, this will make you feel better.” The orderly spoke in a miscalculated low tone as if he was trying to soothe a spooked animal.
The nurse rolled up his sleeve and administered the contents of the small glass vial. Alfie slowed to stare in horror. He hadn’t even done anything.
Before the nurse closed the door she looked back at him and said, “You all start out the same, in denial. Give it time. And one day you’ll realize why they put you here and not prison.”

Biggest Movie Traitors and Backstabbers in Cinema
https://ift.tt/3u8zB6p
Last week, as part of the streaming service’s ongoing plan to bring Warner Brothers’ slate of theatrical releases to audiences at home HBO Max premiered Judas and the Black Messiah on the same day it opened in theaters. Directed by Shaka King, the incendiary historical drama centers on the rise of Fred Hampton, the charismatic Black Panther Party leader, and his tragic betrayal at the hands of FBI informant William O’Neal.  Daniel Kaluuya stars as Hampton, a scorched-earth performance that attempts to recreate the magnetism and magma-like intensity of the revolutionary figure, but Kaluuya is somehow not the star of the film.
The film’s true protagonist is O’Neal, played by LaKeith Stanfield. After getting himself into some hot water, O’Neal is propositioned by FBI agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) to either infiltrate the Black Panther Party and report back on his findings or face jail time. At first O’Neal seems to luxuriate in the kickbacks he’s given by Mitchell for his intel but he quickly learns how dangerous it is to lead a double life. O’Neal also has to try to reconcile betraying the very movement he’s spent real time and energy trying to build.
Stanfield’s performance is filled with queasy anxiety and paranoia but also cockroach-like survival tics. It’s an all-time great turncoat performance, worthy of the biblical reference in the film’s title. To honor Stanfield’s turn as “Wild” Bill O’Neil, heres a countdown of some of cinema’s greatest backstabbers.
Fredo Corleone – The Godfather Part II (1974)
Fredo Corleone, the least intelligent and most ineffectual of Don Vito’s children, has become something of a pejorative term used against anyone deemed to be the lesser sibling in a famous family. Played with a sense of melancholy and knowing pity by esteemed character actor John Cazale, Fredo’s betrayal of his brother Michael is due more to petty jealousy than it is to Machiavellian scheming or dreams of leading the Corelone Crime Family.
As the character pathetically rages, “‘Send Fredo off to do this. Send Fredo off to do that. Let Fredo take care of some Mickey Mouse night club somewhere’… I can handle things! I’m smart! Not like everybody says!” The worst part about Fredo’s actions against his family is that it’s unclear if Fredo actually knew what was being planned against his brother or whether he was just blindly jumping at the opportunity to be important and have something for himself.
Lando Calrissian – Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Perhaps the most lovable backstabber on the list, Lando at least shows some backbone and tries to make up for his nearly unforgivable alliance with the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader. While serving as Baron Administrator of Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, Lando is visited by Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett and told to help trap his old friend Han Solo and the Rebels seeking sanctuary in Cloud City in exchange for the safety of the city’s citizens.
After selling his friend out, Lando has a change of heart when he overhears Han being tortured and realizes that Vader and the Empire were already reneging on their promises. He helps Leia and Chewbacca escape, and is able to evacuate Cloud City before the Empire is able to retaliate. Later he participates in the near-incompressible plot to rescue Han Solo and serves as a key general in the Rebel Alliance. Still, even back when he’s on the wrong side of the fight, Billy Dee Williams is able to turn Lando an appealing character, making his eventual redemption that much sweeter.
Henry Hill – Goodfellas (1990)
Ray Liotta plays the ultimate rat. After a long and fruitful career as a capo for local boss Paulie Cicero, Henry Hill’s mafia lifestyle comes to a final, screeching halt after he’s arrested by narcotics agents while trying to facilitate unapproved drug deals with his Pittsburgh associates. Henry’s good friend Tommy jokingly posits that Henry would crack under questioning earlier in the film, but Henry’s damning testimony against his associates Jimmy Conway and Paulie is all about survival: Henry knows that if he doesn’t cover his own ass, Jimmy will have him and his wife killed.

The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone Proves a Little Less is Infinitely More
By Tony Sokol
Becoming the very thing that mafioso’s hate most of all, Henry turns on his friends and is forced into the witness protection program. All Henry ever wanted was to be a gangster, but in the protection program, he’s reduced to “an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook.” It’s a fate that may be worse than death for him.
Mr. Orange – Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Arguably the villain of the story, depending on who’s side you’re on, Mr. Orange is actually L.A.P.D. undercover cop Freddy Newandyke. Looking to bring down crime boss Joe Cabot, Mr. Orange infiltrates his crew and takes part in diamond heist gone bad. In the ensuing chaos, Mr. Orange is shot and ends up killing an innocent civilian in retaliation. Played by Tim Roth, Mr. Orange screams and cries as he believes he’s fatally wounded, but it’s also possible that he’s airing out the guilt he feels in letting his undercover operation get so out of hand.
Without going into all of the bloodshed in the conclusion of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, Mr. Orange’s double agent status is so sound that it eventually leads to the demise of almost all of Cabot’s colorful crew, and Orange then feels compelled to confess his deception, resulting in an ambiguous ending that most believe concludes with his death.
Dennis Nedry – Jurassic Park (1993)
Wayne Knight’s Dennis Nedry is probably the most cartoonish Benedict Arnold of the bunch, and if you think about it, the only human antagonist in the original Jurassic Park film, if you’re not counting short-sighted, megalomaniacal John Hammond. The slovenly Nedry is chief architect of the computer system at the fledgling Jurassic Park theme park, and he’s miffed by perceived low pay. So he decides to take an offer from Lewis Dodgson (“DODGSON, WE GOT DODGSON HERE!) of rival biotech company Biosyn to steal embryos of 15 dinosaur species in exchange for $61,500,000.
To make his grand escape with the embryos, Nedry shuts down the park’s security systems, including the electric fences surrounding the dinosaur paddocks. He also uploads a self-aggrandizing computer virus to prevent the systems from being quickly turned back on. However, a perfect combination of his own harebrained scheme and a nasty storm leaves Nedry stranded and at the mercy of a young Dilophosaurus. It does not end well.
Cypher – The Matrix (1999)
Cypher’s betrayal of the Nebuchadnezzar crew in The Matrix is pretty easy to see coming, and not just because the character is played by Joe Pantoliano, who’s portrayed many malcontents throughout his career. Cypher being a red pill dabbler and wishes he had taken the blue pill instead. He also outwardly makes his disapproval of Morpheus known throughout the movie. Using “ignorance is bliss” as his mantra, he strikes a deal with Agent Smith to return him to the Matrix and erase his memory of ever awakening from it in exchange for selling Morpheus out.

After tipping Smith off to a meeting with the Oracle, Cypher goes full villain and unflinchingly kills Dozer, Apoc, and Switch before finally being stopped and killed. At least he’s free from the reality he hated so much.
“Mad Eye Moody” (aka Barty Crouch Jr.) – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
What’s a bigger betrayal: Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr. revealing that he’s been impersonating Alator “Mad Eye” Moody for the entirety of Harry Potter’s fourth year at Hogwarts, or Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling revealing herself to be a transphobe, betraying many of the themes of her beloved book series? We’ll leave that one to you, dear reader.
However, Barty Crouch Jr. (David Tennant before he was the Doctor) memorably betrays Harry Potter and the Hogwarts community by using the Polyjuice Potion to impersonate the former Auror and ensure that Harry would get into the Triwizard Tournament and ascend to the Third Task, which was a trap to help Lord Voldemort return to a body of his own. At least the real Mad Eye didn’t actually turn his back on those that revered him (like Rowling).
Colin Sullivan – The Departed (2006)
The biggest rat in a film full of “gnawing, cheese-eating fucking rats,” Sgt. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is the criminal counterpoint to Leonardo DiCaprio’s undercover cop Billy Costigan, an undercover gangster who serves as the personal mole to Irish mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson).
Played with smarm and cowardice by Damon, Sullivan eventually double crosses the police and Costello when he discovers that Costello is an FBI informant—a rat leading rats. Scared but trying to retain his high-ranking job, Sullivan misguidedly tries to position himself as a hero and tie up all loose ends, resulting in a shocking, bloody finale that finds cocky Colin Sullivan miraculously as the last man standing. Or at least the last man standing for the moment, as a final, forgotten loose end returns to give the audience what they want; another dead rat.
Robert Ford – The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
Well, it’s all right there in the title, innit? Played with a jealous, insecure bent by a creepy (in multiple ways) Casey Affleck, Robert Ford starts off as a Jesse James fanboy, desperate to join the outlaw’s gang with his brother Charlie (Sam Rockwell). When he finally gets close to the mythical criminal (a shadowy Brad Pitt), Bob begins to resent the man, eventually brokering a deal with the Governor of Missouri to either capture or kill Jesse James in exchange for a substantial bounty and full pardon.

Bob Ford cozies up to Jesse James even further, eventually earning the man’s complete trust, before cowardly shooting the man in the back—although in the film both carry an air of expectation that it needs to happen. Ford then lives out the rest of his days known as the coward punk that betrayed Jesse James until his eventual murder.
Aaron Burr – Hamilton (2020)
Close knit allies but ideological opposites, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton both fought in the Continental Army for independence from the British. However, when it came time to actual govern the new country that they fought to begin, the men drifted apart.
It’s unfair to call Burr the only backstabber in this relationship, because both men betray their former friend. Burr (Leslie Odom Jr.) becomes jealous that Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) constantly has George Washington’s ear, and switches political parties to defeat Hamilton’s father-in-law in an election, ending their mutual admiration.
Burr also inadvertently pressures Hamilton to publicly reveal an affair, which strains the rivals’ relationships even further. However, when Hamilton endorses Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) in the third presidential election, a man that he doesn’t even like, to block Burr’s political malleability from the presidency, it becomes the final straw for Burr, who challenges Hamilton to a duel. In the ensuing gunfight, Hamilton throws away his shot, and Burr seals his fate to be remembered as the villain who killed Alexander Hamilton.

They fought slavery, prejudice, and injustice — and changed the face of medicine in America. They invented modern blood-banking, served in the highest ranks of the U.S. government, and much more. In honor of Black History Month, read the inspiring stories of 10 pioneering black physicians.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD (1831 — 1895)
In 1864, after years as a nurse, Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first black woman in the United States to receive an MD degree. She earned that distinction at the New England Female Medical College in Boston, Massachusetts — where she also was the institution’s only black graduate. After the Civil War, Crumpler moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with other black doctors who were caring for formerly enslaved people in the Freedmen’s Bureau. While she faced sexism and other forms of harassment, Crumpler ultimately found the experience transformative. "I returned to my former home, Boston, where I entered into the work with renewed vigor, practicing outside, and receiving children in the house for treatment; regardless, in a measure, of remuneration," she wrote.
Crumpler also wrote A Book of Medical Discourses: In Two Parts. Published in 1883, the book addresses children’s and women’s health and is written for “mothers, nurses, and all who may desire to mitigate the afflictions of the human race.”
Note: No photos of Rebecca Lee Crumpler are known to exist.
James McCune Smith, MD (1813 — 1865)
James McCune Smith, MD, was a man of firsts. In 1837, he became the first black American to receive a medical degree — although he had to enroll at the University of Glasgow Medical School because of racist admissions practices at U.S. medical schools. And that was far from his only groundbreaking accomplishment. He was also the first black person to own and operate a pharmacy in the United States and the first black physician to be published in U.S. medical journals.
Smith used his writing talents to challenge shoddy science, including racist notions of African-Americans. Most notably, he debunked such theories in Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia. Smith was a staunch abolitionist and friend of Frederick Douglass. He contributed to Douglass’ newspaper and wrote the introduction to his book, My Bondage and My Freedom.
Leonidas Harris Berry, MD (1902 — 1995)
Even as a renowned gastroenterologist, Leonidas Harris Berry, MD, faced racism in the workplace. Berry was the first black doctor on staff at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, in 1946, but he had to fight for an attending position there for years. “I have spent many years of crushing disappointment at the threshold of opportunity,” he wrote to the hospital’s trustee board committee in his final plea, “keeping my lamps trimmed and bright for a bride that never came.” He was finally named to the attending staff in 1963 and remained a senior attending physician for the rest of his medical career.
In the 1950s, Berry chaired a Chicago commission that worked to make hospitals more inclusive for black physicians and to increase facilities in underserved parts of the city. But his dedication to equity reached far beyond the clinical setting: He was active in a civil rights group called the United Front that provided protection, monetary support, and other assistance to black residents of Cairo, Illinois, who had been victims of racist attacks. In 1970, he helped organize the Flying Black Medics, a group of practitioners who flew from Chicago to Cairo to bring medical care and health education to members of the remote community.
Charles Richard Drew, MD (1904 — 1950)
Known as the “father of blood banking,” Charles Richard Drew, MD, pioneered blood preservation techniques that led to thousands of lifesaving blood donations. Drew’s doctoral research explored best practices for banking and transfusions, and its insights helped him establish the first large-scale blood banks. Drew directed the Blood for Britain project, which shipped much-needed plasma to England during World War II. Drew then led the first American Red Cross Blood Bank and created mobile blood donation stations that are now known as bloodmobiles. But Drew’s work was not without struggle. He protested the American Red Cross’ policy of segregating blood by race and ultimately resigned from the organization.
Despite his renown for blood preservation, Drew’s true passion was surgery. He was appointed chairman of the department of surgery and chief of surgery at Freedmen’s Hospital (now known as Howard University Hospital) in Washington, D.C. During his time there, he went to great lengths to support young African-Americans pursuing careers in the discipline.
Louis Wade Sullivan, MD (b. 1933)
Louis Wade Sullivan, MD, grew up in the racially segregated rural South in the 1930s. There, he was inspired by his doctor, Joseph Griffin. “He was the only black physician in a radius of 100 miles,” Sullivan said. “I saw that Dr. Griffin was really doing something important and he was highly respected in the community.”
Over the decades, Sullivan became an equally profound source of inspiration. The only black student in his class at Boston University School of Medicine, he would later serve on the faculty from 1966 to 1975. In 1975, he became the founding dean of what became the Morehouse School of Medicine — the first predominantly black medical school opened in the United States in the 20th century. Later, Sullivan was tapped to serve as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he directed the creation of the Office of Minority Programs in the National Institutes of Health’s Office of the Director.
Sullivan has chaired numerous influential groups and institutions, from the President’s Advisory Council on Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the National Health Museum. He is CEO and chair of the Sullivan Alliance, an organization he created in 2005 to increase racial and ethnic minority representation in health care.
Marilyn Hughes Gaston, MD (b. 1939)
In a pivotal experience while working as an intern at Philadelphia General Hospital in 1964, Marilyn Hughes Gaston, MD, admitted a baby with a swollen, infected hand. The baby suffered from sickle cell disease, which hadn’t occurred to Gaston until her supervisor suggested the possibility. Gaston quickly committed herself to learning more about it, and eventually became a leading researcher on the disease, which affects millions of people around the world. She became deputy branch chief of the Sickle Cell Disease Branch at the National Institutes of Health, and her groundbreaking 1986 study led to a national sickle cell disease screening program for newborns. Her research showed both the benefits of screening for sickle cell disease at birth and the effectiveness of penicillin to prevent infection from sepsis, which can be fatal in children with the disease.
In 1990, Gaston became the first black female physician to be appointed director of the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care. She was also the second black woman to serve as assistant surgeon general as well as achieve the rank of rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service. Gaston has been honored with every award that the Public Health Service bestows.
Patricia Era Bath, MD (b. 1942)
Interning in New York City in the 1960s sparked a revelation for Patricia Era Bath, MD. Bath, the first African-American to complete an ophthalmology residency, noticed that rates of blindness and visual impairment were much higher at the Harlem Hospital’s eye clinic, which served many black patients, than at the eye clinic at Columbia University, which mostly served whites. That observation spurred her to conduct a study that found twice the rate of blindness among African-Americans compared with whites. Throughout the rest of her career, Bath explored inequities in vision care. She created the discipline of community ophthalmology, which approaches vision care from the perspectives of community medicine and public health.
Bath blazed trails in other ways as well, co-founding the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in 1976, which supports programs that protect, preserve, and restore eyesight. Bath was also the first woman appointed chair of ophthalmology at a U.S. medical school, at the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine in 1983. And she was the first black female physician to receive a medical patent in 1988 for the Laserphaco Probe, a device used in cataract surgery.
Herbert W. Nickens, MD (1947 — 1999)
As the first director of the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 1986, Herbert W. Nickens, MD, set the foundation for promoting improved health among racial and ethnic minority populations across the country. When he left the HHS, Nickens moved to the AAMC, where he was the founding vice president of the AAMC Division of Community and Minority Programs, now known as Diversity Policy and Programs. He led Project 3000 by 2000, which the AAMC launched in 1991 to achieve the goal of enrolling 3,000 students from underrepresented minority groups in U.S. medical schools annually by the year 2000.
“No one in recent memory did more than Herbert Nickens to bridge the painful and persistent diversity gap in medicine," said then-AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, MD, after Nickens’ death in 1999. The AAMC continues to remember Nickens’ legacy with three namesake awards, honoring outstanding medical students, junior faculty, and individuals who have made significant contributions toward social justice in academic medicine and health care equity.
Alexa Irene Canady, MD (b. 1950)
Alexa Irene Canady, MD, nearly dropped out of college due to a crisis of self-confidence but ultimately went on to achieve dramatic success in medicine. In 1981, she became the first black neurosurgeon in the United States, and just a few years later, she rose to the ranks of chief of neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
Canady worked for decades as a successful pediatric neurosurgeon and was ready to retire in Florida in 2001. But she donned her surgical scrubs once again to practice part time at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, where there was a dearth of pediatric neurosurgery services. Canady has been lauded for her patient-centered approach to care, which she said was a boon to her career. “I was worried that because I was a black woman, any practice opportunities would be limited.” But, she noted, “by being patient-centered, the practice growth was exponential.”
Regina Marcia Benjamin, MD, MBA (b. 1956)
Regina Marcia Benjamin, MD, MBA, may be best known for her tenure as the 18th U.S. Surgeon General, during which she served as first chair of the National Prevention Council. The group of 17 federal agencies was responsible for developing the National Prevention Strategy, which outlined plans to improve health and well-being in the United States.
But it’s not just her work at the highest levels of public health that earned her praise. Long before she was appointed “the nation’s doctor” in 2009, Benjamin worked extensively with rural communities in the South. She is the founder and CEO of BayouClinic in Bayou La Batre, Louisiana, which provides clinical care, social services, and health education to residents of the small Gulf Coast town. Benjamin helped rebuild the clinic several more times, including after damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and a fire in 2006. Of the clinic, she said she hopes that she is “making a difference in my community by providing a clinic where patients can come and receive health care with dignity.”

For the ask: 001: Doctor Who; 002: Wodehouse ship of your choice; 003: character of your choice from Psych.
Thank you!
Doctor Who
Favorite character: ...I mean, it has to be the Doctor. He’s the embodiment of Chaotic Good, and he’s so entertaining and absurd and so deeply good at the same time. Even if there are regenerations I like less than others, I always love the Doctor.
Least Favorite character: ...Rose Freaking Tyler. I don’t talk about her much, because I don’t want to inadvertently start something with anyone who feels differently, but this is not a Rose-friendly space.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Canon-ish: Ben/Polly, Amy/Rory, Martha/Mickey. Non-canon: Harry/Victoria, Jenny/the son of Kate Stewart (he only barely exists in EU, but the idea of the Doctor’s daughter marrying the Brigadier’s grandson is just really cute to me)
Character I find most attractive: ...Hm. The Eighth Doctor, maybe?
Character I would marry: Harry Sullivan. He’s a sweet, gentlemanly dork of a Naval surgeon with traditional values--what’s not to love?
Character I would be best friends with: The Doctor. Not so much because he’s the character most like me, but because he’s very good at Being Friends With People.
a random thought: One thing I really love about the New Series is the increasingly consistent trend--especially in Moffat’s era, I think?--of explicitly treating the TARDIS as another character. It’s been there implicitly for a long time, but they made it much more canon and I appreciate that.
An unpopular opinion: Missy is not the Master, and I’ll never believe she is. This isn’t even about her gender, but about her whole personality.
My Canon OTP: Ian/Barbara, from the First Doctor’s era. This isn’t exactly controversial--I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything, in fandom or EU, where they weren’t happily together--but I love them.
My Non-canon OTP: Master/Clara... Which is entirely the fault of my sister’s fics. I wasn’t expecting to ship them!!
Most Badass Character: ...There’s so many to choose from. Aside from the Doctor, maybe Sarah Jane? Aside from being one of the greatest companions, she got her own spinoff show in which it was established that she’s been regularly saving the world on her own, she adopted two children and began mentoring three more in her fifties, and she was generally amazing for five seasons.
Most Epic Villain: ...The Master gets highest points for Presentation (as Megamind would say), and the Daleks are the most consistently menacing... But I think Rassilon scares me the most. He’s the founder of Time Lord society, and he’s evil.
Pairing I am not a fan of: The Doctor/anyone other than River, honestly. (Well, or his Gallifreyan wife from pre-canon days--I assume they were a good match, from what canon evidence we have)
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): ...A lot. Today, though, I’m going to say Sarah again. As said above, she’s a hero in her own right, and there’s no force in the universe that could stop her from having adventures. Reducing her to “female character pining after the Doctor and unable to get over losing him,” as they did in “School Reunion”, was a massive injustice to her character. (ESPECIALLY since their Classic relationship was not romantic. I mean, they’ve been shipped, of course, but their was nothing romantic in the writing or--IMHO--even the acting.)
Favourite Friendship: I think I’ve said this before, but the Doctor and the Brigadier. I love constant their friendship is, how much they’ve done for each other and respect each other, and how easily they fit back together every time they reunite.
Character I most identify with: ...I honestly don’t know. I love almost all of them, but I don’t think any of them click in quite that way, you know?
Character I wish I could be: Romana, maybe? She’s a Time Lady who traveled with the Doctor--that’s a pretty good deal!
Wodehouse Ship: I’m going to go with Mike/Eve here, for fun
When I started shipping them: As soon as the name “Jackson” appeared in Leave it to Psmith, I think. I trust and support Mike’s judgement. :P
My thoughts: I wish we’d, you know, seen them together. But I like that Mike has a wife he can take care of! I think that suits them both. (I also have a headcanon that Psmith went off--to the Drones, maybe?--and dug up dirt on Rollo, and that these discoveries were what pushed Mike to propose. Because he’s an honorable boy, and I think getting him to propose to an engaged woman would take some intervention from Psmith... Also I don’t like what we’ve heard of Rollo.)
What makes me happy about them: That they exist. That they got their farm, and that their best friends married each other, so the two couples can look after each other when they need to!
What makes me sad about them: No content. :(
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: ...I’ve never read any fic of them that wasn’t written by myself or one of this Tumblr microfandom, so... Nothing, really!
Things I look for in fanfic: Anything of them interacting with Psmith/Eve is especially fun. (Someday I’d like to try the scene where they find out Psmith and Eve are engaged. Because A) if they’re told soon enough, it would be the same meeting where they share the news that they got the farm, which sounds delightfully chaotic B) last they knew, Psmith and Eve hadn’t even met, and C) the second Mike heard they’d met at Blandings, he’d know Psmith was behind getting them the money. Somehow.)
My wishlist:
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: ...I’m sure there are other Wodehouse Protagonists who would suit them, but none come to mind. They’re good with each other.
My happily ever after for them: Hmm... For them to have lots of kids, and the Psmiths as neighbors, and play cricket with their combined families every summer. Margery can visit and be the fun aunt, and since they’re doing well financially maybe the Jackson parents will come live with them at some point? (I’d also like them to have a chance to help Psimth and Eve out of some significant trouble, since it’s usually the other way around... I don’t know what, though.)
Psych character: ...I’ll pick Henry, since I’ve been talking about him a lot lately
How I feel about this character: Good! He’s a good, though flawed, dad, and a good cop. (One of the few Lawful Goods in this cast, in my opinion.) He’s solid, and principled, and one of the few people who can really, truly keep up with/keep a hold of Shawn.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: His wife, I suppose? I don’t remember being a big fan of her, but he clearly still loves her, and I’m a sucker for “divorced couple reconciles” anyway... So yeah, Maddie.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Shawn, of course. Henry just... he built his whole life around raising his son, and it shows with him and with Shawn. They’ve both affected each other so much, and I love that the show just shows them being more openly important to each other as it goes on.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I’m not sure what’s “unpopular” here... But I think his training of Shawn was less about wanting him to be a cop, and more about giving Shawn A) something halfway constructive to do with his racing brain, and B) the tools to survive whatever trouble he'd get into in the future. Because, even then, Henry knew Shawn was never going to stay out of trouble.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish Shawn had told him he loved him out loud, to his face, which I don’t think quite happened. I’m pretty content with Henry’s content overall, though, I think.
Favorite friendship for this character: I’m going to cheat slightly and say Gus. It’s not exactly a friendship, but I love the implicit history there, and the way that Gus is practically his second kid and they both relate to each other as such. (I am also highly indignant that the “Henry & Gus” tag apparently doesn’t even exist on AO3... Distressing.)
My crossover ship: ...I got nothin. However, I have decided that in a Star Trek fusion AU (sort of a crossover!) Shawn’s mom would be a Vulcan. That’s the closest I’ve got.
