oh hey, did you wanna see my digital art?
ID: Digital illustration of an anthro toucan in a 1980s setting. The toucan has a beak striped in unusual colors with purple, red, and yellow, and is wearing 80s business casual clothing with a knit vest and bright red tie. His feet are kicked up onto his rolltop desk and leaned against a 1984 Apple Macintosh computer which is open to a partially finished drawing of a bird. His casual pose suggests he's taking a break from his work to talk, and he has his keyboard resting in his lap.
his name is supershades:
Tumblr media
ID2: Colorful 1980s graphic showing a toucan wearing blue shades and a red tie. The toucan has a yellow, red, and purple beak like the drawing in the previous post. Text reads: SuperShades Scrapbook.

[image description: A tiny Oriole sits cheeping on a branch. But this wee bird has tied a big colorful toucan beak over his own, and added a bright red-orange comb. We see him against a bright green rainforest background. Text reads, “18, YUCAN TU, the small god of faking it until you make it”]
Sometimes education isn’t enough.  Sometimes you can study and study and try and try, and never quite cross the last bridge between where you are and your heart’s desire.
Sometimes you need to tell the perfect little lie to get there.
Once upon a time there was a small god of orioles named Yucan who wanted nothing more in the world than to be a god of toucans, to manifest himself as a big, beautiful, tropical bird that people would stop to ooo and ahh over when they saw it in the trees, something impressive.  It was a good thing to be a god of songbirds.  There weren’t as many of them as there had been before cats became quite so popular as house pets, and the ones remaining needed all the divine intervention they could get their wings on.  He appreciated their attention and their worship, but he wanted, so very badly, to be more than his nature was allowing him to be.
So he hatched, over the course of several slow decades, a plan, and one night, with no warning whatsoever, his faithful woke and found him gone.  He had abandoned his divine duties, flown the coop, left the nest, and no one could find a single feather left behind!  All the little birdies were distraught…but not for very long, as little birdies have short memories, and there were other gods of songbirds around to serve.  If it wasn’t quite the same, well, nothing ever is, not even following the same god from one day to another.  They adjusted.  They adapted.
And far away, a very small god with a very big dream put his plans into action. He donned a false face, he told everyone who met him that he was the god of endangered tropical birds, and if no one had ever seen him before, well, some of those birds were very endangered.  Deforestation and poaching, don’cha know?  So many dangers to evade.  So many fledglings to protect.  So he lied, and lied, and pretended, and did his best to live up to his own lies.  He protected those who came to him, he spread his wings over the nests of species unknown to science, and he tried, and he lied, and he tried.
Until one day, the mask would not come off when he went to go to nest.  One day, he noticed that his wingspan was greater, and he no longer heard the prayers of songbirds, but of the birds he had claimed…and of more than them. Of frightened high school drama students and would-be figure skaters, of novice computer programmers and new-made lawyers.
They had their own lies to tell.
And Yucan Tu would be with them every step along the way, singing goldfinch songs in their ears and spreading his wings to defend them from the risks of their own actions.
He is a god of falsehood, yes, but also of sincerity, and of effort.

Héctor Madrigal
Tumblr media
Inspired by @hannahhook7744's Encanto AU, and her own character headcanons.
Third image made using https://picrew.me/en/image_maker/1558575
Fourth image made using https://www.dolldivine.com/la-colombiana
Fifth image is a model of one of the Encanto kids I edited.
Héctor’s full name is Héctor Gregorio Madrigal.
His first name means “hold fast”, and his middle name means “watchful”.
He is the third adopted child of Camilo Madrigal and Marcos Vasquez.
He has straight dark brown hair, light brown skin, and brown eyes.
He is six years old.
He has two biological brothers, Hugo, older by eight years, and Héctor, older by three.
He is currently uninterested in romance and sex.
His gift is the ability to turn into animals. His powers work similarly to Camilo’s, and he can only hold a shape for so long. He’s in love with his powers, and uses them mostly to turn into different types of birds, so he can fly.
His door portrays him smiling, with his right arm turning into a wing, and his left turning into a furry, clawed arm, while his forehead sprouts horns.
His room can change sizes, depending on what type of animal he becomes. Similar to Antonio’s room, it has a jungle theme, but instead of there being one big tree, it's almost an entire jungle. His bed and other amenities are at the front of the jungle, by a small pond.
His symbol is a jackalope.
Camilo tries to get Héctor out of his shell more than Marcos, and get him involved in theater and helping the community.
Marcos lets him be more shy, believing that he’d be more social when he was ready. Héctor likes to turn into various animals and sleep in Marcos’ lap.
His birth parents died when he was just a baby, so he has no memory of them. According to his brothers, they were very neglectful, so he has a negative opinion of them.
He and Hugo are both quiet, and get along well. Héctor sometimes feels overprotected by him, but that only happens as he gets older.
José is very loud and hyper compared to him, and so they don’t spend a lot of time together. When they do, José tries to parent him like Hugo and their actual parents do.
He hangs out with Avila, Amada, Tomás, Rómulo, Mariana, and Zoe. He also stays glued to Miranda quite a lot.
He gets along best with Julieta, Antonio, and Miranda.
He and Miranda love to fly together.
Hugo’s service animal, Pepito the toucan, loves Héctor, and will hang out with him when Hugo doesn’t need him.
He loves fútbol, and is very good at it. He and the other Encanto children will play games literally all day.
He always carries a little backpack on him, full of all sorts of different animal food for emergencies.
He’s naturally very good at swimming, even in human form. He and Amada like to swim together.
His favorite colors are light blue, gray, turquoise, and brown.

“Hey you still into bird watching?” - A thread on Betty Grof bird symbolism - crossposted on twitter!!!
Tumblr media
I think about which birds Betty’s magic birds are and a couple come to mind. I’d personally like to think they’d change form to the following:
1.) Canaries- for a multitude of reason 1.) being that they’re some of the most similar in terms of size and shape minus the beak, but i did want to bring up the phrase “canary in a coal mine"
Tumblr media
1a.) “⁃A canary in a coal mine is an advanced warning of some danger. The metaphor originates from the times when miners used to carry caged canaries while at work; if there was any methane or carbon monoxide in the mine, the canary would die before the levels of the gas reached those hazardous to humans.” In terms of interpretation i think thats rather clear about Betty’s fate in terms of being digested with GOLB though its a reach, something something caged within GOLB something something dying with him and becoming rebirthed
1b.) - Extra info. Canaries are song birds and individualists in nature EXCEPT when mating- possibly playing on Betty’s recluse nature with the exception of magic man and Simon/IK.
2.) Nightingales- ANOTHER bird that looks very similar to those animated, this time the beak and tail-feathers match quite well. Matching the color scheme (in terms of their bellies being brighter!) and are overall very similar in nature!
Tumblr media
2a.) Their symbolism- nightingales have been associated with a variety of themes, including "creativity, the muse, nature's purity, and, in Western spiritual tradition, virtue and goodness." the nightingale is deemed to be ”a prime example of poetic invention occurring naturally” Though not intrinsically related to Betty herself, it could be a representation of her usage of magic and how she’s becoming less and less human, and more in tune with the nature of Ooo around her. Though birds are also associated with magic man…
Tumblr media
2b.) “A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square” - who doesn’t love some music symbolism coupled with bird symbolism! The song itself is about the power of love, and how the “whole damned world seemed upside down” - could easily be a representation of Betty’s love for Simon :)
2c.) In more literal interpretations of the nightingale, its seen as a sign of coming striping, it’s song ushering new leaves after the winter. It’s referenced in Homer’s odyssey when a nightingale sings in the woods, spring has just begun (Odyssey 19.519). Spring is often seen as a time of change, "Every one thousand years, the Catalyst Comet mysteriously reincarnates itself and collides with Earth, bringing with it an Agent of Change." It could be interpreted as such, that her nightingales were the first signs of HER change. Though it’s a reach considering the airing date of the episode, unless it was foreshadowed like crazy. Which is totally fucking possible. Also! This next one is just for fun.
3.) Toucans - Though not at all similar in shape or size, toucans have a very interesting meaning, as well as a quote directly from Ice King himself. Also they are quite cute…
Tumblr media
3a.) This clip [season 9, episode 3 “Bespoken For” part 2 of 8 of the elements specials], the SAME episode as “Betty's birds”- as Ice King is going “bird watching” he refers to Betty as a Toucan- as seen in the clip below.
It’s a one off line, because on ice kings bird list, a Toucan is one of the things he needs to check off. Not to mention his later reference to Betty as an exotic bird to life giving magus!
Tumblr media
3b.) Though the Toucan has interesting symbolism, Toucans are regarded as a bird with a sacred eye, they’re seen as conduits between the worlds of the living and the dead. Which could again play into her role as GOLBETTY, because of GOLBETTY’s omnipotent nature. It could easily be implied that she’s a conduit, but less of matters of the living of the dead and more so in regards to the antiverse and the multiverse.
Ok thats all from me ^_^ I might continue this thread, but for now enjoy some bird watching :)

Kellogg's 75th Anniversary Fun Book was a coloring and activity book produced in 1980, featuring all of the cereal mascots they had at the time. Since some of these are now considered obscure, let me tell you who these folks are...
The porcupine is Poppy, who supported Corn Pops, taking up the slack after Big Yella rode into the sunset earlier that year.
You all know Tony The Tiger, who thinks that Frosted Flakes are grrr-eat! He has gotten a bit more attractive over the years. FYI, if Tony sounds like he could sing "You're A Mean One, Mister Grinch", it's because he did... Thurl Ravenscroft was the voice of both.
You should also recognise Snap, Crackle, and Pop, who have been shilling Rice Crispies since 1941 and is one of the longest running cereal mascot campaigns in history.
The elephant is Tusk and he advertised Cocoa Krispies. His life is kind of convoluted because he's still used in Mexico, where his name was changed to Melvin and the cereal name is now Choco Krispis -- meanwhile in the States, Tusk the elephant was replaced by Coco the monkey, and then the name was changed to Coco Pops. If Tusk sounds like he's from your favorite Disney cartoon, that's because he was... he was voiced by Paul Winchell.
One of my favorites is Dig 'Em the frog from Sugar Smacks, now known as Honey Smacks. He was an improvement over Smaxie the seal. [Aside: anyone else here remember when Post's Super Golden Crisp was called Sugar Crisp? Sugar Bear got to keep his name!]
The pencil-drawing kids were from Apple Jacks, and I'm not sure if they had names or were ever animated. Here's an ad or two on YouTube where you see them pictured.
You should all know Toucan Sam and his love of the fruit flavors of Froot Loops. He had been voiced by Mel Blanc earlier (thus him sounding like Bugs Bunny) and then when this book came out it was the more sauve sound of his Mel's friend Paul Frees (thus him sounding like the narrator from Bullwinkle).
And finally, Tony the Tiger had a son -- yeah, we don't know who the mama is but he got custody -- Tony Junior, who roared for Frosted Rice. I guess sugar runs in that family's veins like diabetes. He died tragically from a diffferent kind of 'sugar'.

Animabri
Tumblr media
“Southern ground hornbill” © ArtStation user “Reptile without any name”. Accessed at their ArtStation here
[Animabri appears in the creation myths of the Krachi people of Togo and Ghana; specifically, he is the first creature to kill humans. In Harold Scheub’s A Dictionary of African Mythology, Animabri is referred to as a “giant ground toucan”. Which is not a thing that exists, and if it did, wouldn’t exist in Africa. It’s a hornbill. So this entry pulls in some other ground hornbill lore from throughout Africa to round out what I could only find passing references to.]
Animabri CR 9 CE Magical Beast This great black bird has an oversized beak with a short crest at its base. Colorful patches of bare flesh mark its face, and hang from its neck in a wattle.
The animabris are sinister avian predators that resemble a ground hornbill the size of an elephant. They have powers over death and misfortune, and people where animabris roam are leery of even mundane hornbills. Although they are fully flighted, an animabri is not very agile in the air, so spends most of its time on the ground. Animabris have incredibly keen vision, and ignore invisibility and illusions. They use this in their pursuit of small game. “Small” in this case is proportionate to the animabri, so includes creatures such as antelope, wild pigs and people.
An animabri is shrouded by a perpetual aura of misfortune. Most creatures are cursed by its mere presence, making fighting back against such a beast difficult. This curse of misfortune is temporary, but a well-placed peck or claw can bestow a more permanent curse on an enemy. Victims slain by an animabri have their souls severed from their bodies, making them harder to raise from the dead. Incorporeal undead tend to be more common than usual in animabri country, although the monstrous birds do not associate with such restless spirits.
Most animabris live in social units consisting of a single family—a mated pair and their adult children. These families are insular and clannish. They fight to the death with other animabris over hunting territory. Only when the parents grow old does the family split up, each member trying to find a mate to start its own little clan. Despite their group living, they are more competitive than cooperative when it comes to foraging, and may bicker over a choice meal or trinket. Animabris are interested in treasure, but have little idea of value. Their hoards contain the most brightly colored and shiniest objects they can find, regardless of their actual worth.
An animabri can live around 40-50 years. They can speak Common, which they use primarily to deliver threats and boasts.

This effect lasts for as long as the creature remains within 30 feet of the animabri, and for 1d4+1 rounds thereafter. A creature that succeeds its save is immune to that animabri’s aura of misfortune for the next 24 hours. This is a curse effect, and the save DC is Charisma based. Cursed Critical (Su) If an animabri successfully confirms a critical hit against an opponent, that creature must succeed a DC 17 Will save or be cursed (as per bestow curse—the animabri chooses the effect). The save DC is Charisma based. Sever Life (Su) A creature that is killed by an animabri is difficult to return to life; such a creature can only be raised or resurrected with a successful DC 24 caster level check. This is a curse effect. True Seeing (Su) An animabri gains the constant benefits of a true seeing spell as a supernatural ability.

In the Intag Valley of Ecuador, at this “most biodiverse hotspot on the planet” (the cloud forests of the tropical Andes), local communities have engaged in 30 years of sustained defense of environment and resistance to multiple mining corporations, including Canada’s Copper Mesa Corporation. The group Defensa y Conservación Ecológica de Intag has helped plant tens of thousands of trees while establishing about 40 different forest reserves. Now the planet’s biggest copper producer company (Codelco) is targeting the Intag region, with wells already drilled and important court cases scheduled for 2023. Among the many unique orchids, moths, hummingbirds, plate-billed mountain toucan, spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, critically endangered brown-headed spider monkey, and other creatures, in Intag Valley there are two species of frog which live nowhere else on Earth, previously thought to be extinct: the longnose harlequin frog and the newly-named “rana cohete resistencia de intag” (”Intag resistance rocket frog”). The frogs now provide “hope” and are the subjects of Intag’s pending court cases.
From January 2023, Mongabay provides a thorough report about Intag’s cloud forest ecosystems, community projects, and resistance to mining. Excerpts from their report below.
---
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For nearly 30 years, communities have worked to conserve, restore and defend the cloud forests of the Intag Valley in Ecuador, in what locals say is the longest continuous resistance movement against mining in Latin America. The tropical Andes are considered the world’s most biodiverse hotspot, ranking first in plant, bird, mammal and amphibian diversity; however, less than 15% of Ecuador’s original cloud forests and only 4% of all forests in northwestern Ecuador remain. Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer from Chile, plans to open a mine in the Intag Valley that would destroy primary forest and lie within the buffer area of Cotacachi Cayapas National Park — a plan that experts say would be ecologically devastating and not worth the cost. Communities are using the presence of two threatened frog species — previously thought to be extinct — at the mining site to challenge the project [...].
In the 1960s, to encourage development, the government deemed forested properties with no human occupants “unproductive” and open to land grabbers. In turn, landowners were forced to clear at least 50% of the land to prove it was in use. These agrarian laws led to a flurry of deforestation that lasted into the 1990s. [...]
Pumas (Puma concolor), spectacled bears (Tremarctos ornatus), mountain tapirs (Tapirus pinchaque), mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata), the critically endangered brown-headed spider monkey (Ateles fusciceps fusciceps), and the colorful plate-billed mountain toucan (Andigena laminirostris) are just a few of the more charismatic threatened species living here. [...]
Our first foray deep into this “terrestrial coral reef” is led by Roberto Castro, a local nature guide, environmental educator, and Zorrilla’s friend and neighbor. [...]
“Here is the Sangre de Drago tree … its red sap [is] a cure for many ailments,” he says. “Here is the Cecropia tree that lives in partnership with the ants.”
He shows us a white flower that shares its nectar with just one bat species and lets go of its seeds in a grand explosion once the nectar is spent. We see the sickle-winged guan (Chamaepetes goudotii), a large ground bird that lays only one, maybe two, precious eggs in a year. The famed Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) cries out, its song somewhere between that of a parrot and a squealing pig. In the cloud forest, a single leaf is a stage for drama: ants farming aphids, lichens making their slow march against the moss. The forest drips with life.
We stop in a grove of massive elephant ear plants, twice as tall as a person. “These plants tell us water is abundant,” Castro says. The water trail leads us to a 10-meter (33-foot) waterfall. Castro stands in the stream below and pulls out a minuscule underwater castle made from pebbles.
“This is the home of moth larvae,” he shows us. [...]
Zorrilla and other community members started the environmental group Defensa y Conservación Ecológica de Intag (DECOIN) in 1995. [...] DECOIN helped communities establish 38 small-scale forest reserves that, altogether, protect almost 12,000 hectares (nearly 30,000 acres) of forest within the buffer zone of Cotacachi Cayapas National Park. [...]
In Intag, communities are self-defined administrative units, whose leader is nominated by its residents. It’s up to each community to decide how to best protect forests. Most include agreements prohibiting activities such as [...] cattle ranching, mining [...]. Bolaños and fellow community members planted more than 60,000 trees on slopes that were originally forests but had been converted to pasture decades ago. Working for six months each year between 2008 and 2013, dozens of community members planted 22 native species [...].
Intag’s richness aboveground is rivaled by a different kind of wealth below: copper. [...]
In 1996, the Japanese mining company Bishimetals, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, found evidence of massive copper deposits in the Intag Valley. [...] In 1997, local communities reacted [...]. No one was harmed in the incident, but it was enough to make the company pull out. [...] After Bishimetals retreated in 1997, things calmed down until the Canadian mining company Copper Mesa Corporation (formally Ascendent Copper) entered the scene in 2004. [...] The company tried for five years to develop the project and used paramilitaries and violent force, Zorrilla tells Mongabay. [...] DECOIN helped residents file a lawsuit against both the mining company and the Toronto Stock Exchange for complicity in human rights violations based on Copper Mesa’s actions. [...] [I]n 2010 the Toronto Stock Exchange delisted Copper Mesa Mining Corporation.
---
Now, the communities face the world’s largest copper producer, Chile’s Codelco, which has partnered with Empresa Nacional Minera (ENAMI EP), Ecuador’s state-owned mining company, and invested millions into advanced mining explorations across Intag — in particular within the 5,000-hectare (12,400-acre) mining concession known as Llurimagua. [...]
According to several community members Mongabay spoke to, around 400 military and police officers used force to ensure the presence of Codelco and ENAMI in the mining concession. [...] Javier Ramirez was the president of the Junín community in 2014 when he was arrested for “sabotage and rebellion against the state.” [...] Codelco persisted and set up camp in the Junín Community Reserve, a patch of primary, old-growth forest [...].
Codelco has installed at least 90 drilling platforms within the reserve, digging down to depths of 1,200 meters (3,900 feet). [...]
The U.S. nonprofit Earth Economics [...] valued ecosystem services in Intag, such as water, food, climate regulation, soil retention, pollination, waste treatment, recreation, and scientific research, at $447 million per year in 2011. That’s higher than the projected revenue from copper mining in the region [...].
At the base of a waterfall, we stop to catch our breath, and Zorrilla steps forward. “This is close to where they found the frogs,” he says.
And here enters hope.
Among the dozens of threatened species in the tropical Andes, two have been found in this reserve and nowhere else on Earth: the longnose harlequin toad (Atelopus longirostris) and the Intag resistance rocket frog whose name was chosen through a contest. Both were presumed extinct until they were recently found again in the Junín Community Reserve. [...]
Finding these frogs has given the community a strong argument to try to legally stop mining development [...].
In September 2020, the Intag communities won one of the few cases upholding the rights of nature in the lower court. But the case was overturned in the higher provincial appeals court due to a procedural error. [...] The case is now before a three-member appeals court. After months of delay, a new judge was appointed in December. The new judge wants to have all of the evidence presented again, essentially starting the process over. The next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 23 [2023]. [...]
We speak with Norma Bolаños about Mujer y Medio Ambiente (Women and the Environment), a group of nearly 50 women in Intag who make products out of cabuya, a fiber they produce from the agave plant, and color with natural dyes. [...]
In Cotacachi, we visit the home of Cenaida Guachagmira. She’s 28, the same age as the resistance movement, and has known this fight her whole life. [...] “The companies have their weapons and we have our dignity,” Guachagmira told Re:wild in an interview earlier this year.

I would like to thank @karamatsusquirrel for commissioning me and allowing me to bring such a very lovely prompt to life for her. She was sweet enough to allow me to post it here for you all to read. Researcher!Erin x Naga!Karamatsu, under the cut:
To say she had been counting down the days until this next trip was an understatement. Originally she was meant to only explore the area once; gathering photos of the local wildlife and a few carefully collected samples of plants to return back to her homebase site. It was referred to as the Akatsuka Wilds - an uninhabited, unexplored section of rainforest that many explorers knew little to nothing about. Rumor had it that each expedition there had left the active crew completely frightened and unable to finish the tasks at hand…and when questioned about it, refused to even speak on the matter. As a result, the Akatsuka Wilds remained an enigma to all. Erin had been researching with Professor Dekapan and his team for only a couple of years, a true asset in her willingness to assist in projects and her keen eye for spotting details undetectable to even some of her seniors. However, there was more she wanted to learn - and with her knowledge and experience thus far, she offered to take on a project no one else would: exploring the Akatsuka Wilds. There was heavy reluctance in Professor Dekapan at her request, but seeing her bright eyes and excitement for a challenge, he couldn’t say no.
That’s how she began traversing the depths of the rainforest. She was properly armed with a flare gun, an emergency radio, and a machete as she made her way through the greenery on her own. Recollecting her first visit, the foliage seemed typical of what was expected: plenty of orchids, bromeliads, and even a few trees with pitcher plants. The animals nearby weren’t uncommon either: a flock of toucans, a tapir (with which Erin safely kept her distance), and quite a few red tree frogs. She had notes from previous trips that the area always seemed to bustle with life, sounds and smells captivating her senses at each expedition. A feeling she swore she would never get tired of. The young researcher smiled to herself, rereading some of her older entries in her logbook. When she returned from her very first voyage, there were questions galore: “What happened to you?” “Did you find anything new?” “Did you see the unspoken horrors that befell the other crews?”
Erin remembered the excitement in her voice, “Even better! I made contact with a Naga tribe!”
It took Professor Dekapan a multitude of meetings to convince her cohorts to allow her to continue this expedition alone. Their curiosities were piqued - but seeing as how Erin had all of the proficiency and clear capability to hold her own in uncharted territory, she was made the sole researcher for the area. In her logs she’d made mention of accidentally running into a ‘large yellow snake-man hybrid’, a subdivision of mythical serpentine creatures that she would later find out were referred to as nagas. This specific naga had caught her off guard one day as she was uprooting a specimen of flora never seen before. Its movements were sudden, the noise of its slithering only catching her ears at the very last second. Erin remembered letting out a startled scream and ducking for cover upon sight of it, but nothing wound up actually happening. When she felt it safe to look up, she was face to face with the beast. An obtusely wide grin that held sharp fangs and large yellow eyes greeted her. “Ha…you didn’t run away or try to hurt me like the rest of them, you’re brave!” it exclaimed, pulling back from her slowly. She blinked, stunned by its sudden speech. Upon closer inspection, this creature not only had a long canary colored tail, but held the musculature and frame of a man from the navel and up. Seeing as how it distanced itself, Erin took this opportunity to spill the first question biting at her, “What…are you?” The snake-man tilted its head in thought before perking up with a more cheerful grin, “I’m Jyushimatsu! I’m a naga!” And thus was her first contact with the Nagamatsu tribe of the Akatsuka Wilds. Detailed in her logs were several instances of her visiting him since. She’d made a pact with her new naga friend - he would bring her plants or show her signs of wildlife specific only to the region, and she would bring artifacts, teach him skill sets, or bring him goods from the world outside. Under this agreement, Erin found herself learning so much about the tribe solely through Jyushimatsu - a relationship that allowed for her to expound her comprehension on a once mysterious terrain. She came to find the more she absorbed, the more she wanted to know if there were others like Jyushimatsu. When the question arose, she was met with, “Of course! Next time you come visit, I’ll introduce you to my nii-sans!”
So here she was, back once more on a new expedition with the promise of new meetings. Jyushimatsu led Erin deeper than she’d scouted before, through moss covered grounds and low hanging leaves until finally they came to a halt in front of a large mass of mixed foliage. A simple, “ho!” and Jyushimatu’s tail had taken hold of a large branch, moving it out of his way and holding it at bay. He gestured for her to step through the pathway first; what sight befell her was breathtaking. Large reeded huts, each adorned with a specific splotch of color! There were several trees, molded and shaped almost like lounge chairs. The sheer craftsmanship of all of the surrounding homegoods was so spellbinding that she failed to see the other five nagas staring directly at her. “Oi! Everyone! Meet my friend, Erin! She’s a human!” he waved giddily, hurrying her along to approach them. It made sense why the huts were color-coded - so was each brother! “Oh! She’s cute! Good job, Jyushimatsu, you think she’ll let me kiss-” said the crimson naga, before promptly being smacked by the jade one. “Idiot! That’s not how you introduce yourself to anybody, let alone a human!” He turned to Erin, “Forgive Osomatsu-niisan, he’s incredibly stupid,” his hand came to his chest, “I’m Choromatsu, the one behind me is Ichimatsu” as he pointed to a violet colored naga that was carefully observing you at a distance. Popping up suddenly came a naga in a more fuschia tone, “I’m Todomatsu! You’re really pretty! And your hair reminds me of oatmeal,” he giggled (she would put a pin in that to ask him how he knew what oatmeal was later). Finally, the last brother, shaded a deep cerulean, slid up to her, taking her tinier hand in his clawed one, “Heh, not everyday a bipedal princess makes her way to our humble abode” he leaned forward to brush his lips against her knuckles, “You can call me Karamatsu.” His overly flirtatious greeting had her blushing, but she held her composure enough to return the pleasantry. Erin would find that they were actually a rather socialized bunch - aware of the world outside while also remaining untethered from it. Questions of her past, what she did ‘to survive’ and how she met Jyushimatsu of course all arose. She was thankful to be able to ask as much about them as she wanted in return. Nagas had the capability to hypnotize prey, could shapeshift, and even once had regular contact with human society before industrialism destroyed a mass amount of the forest. Erin felt her heart sink at that last bit, taking note of their saddened expressions and reminding herself to speak to Professor Dekapan about a possible conservationist/restorationist effort. She was given the opportunity to capture a few photos of the native avifauna with the help of the brothers, and even collected a few petals and stems of a new bioluminescent flower that grew nearby. In exchange, she brought them sweet rice cakes that she made herself as well as some colorful, ethically sourced geodes from her past geology trips. Before she knew it, sundown would come. “Ah, I promise I’ll be back real soon to visit again, okay?” she waved goodbye to the brothers. It would be Karamatsu this time that would lead her out. He was cautious of wildlife that awoke at dusk, and though she didn’t see it - his tail would form a loose surrounding barrier around her. She felt oddly safe around the second son, and he made her more relaxed through his pleasant conversation about his parents and the things he’s seen in his lifetime (nagas also had an impressively long lifespan!). When the time came for them to part ways, Erin found Karamatsu shielding his eyes. “Oh the goddess that is the sun…she truly pains me around this time of day.” The analyst reacted as if a lightbulb had gone off, reaching suddenly into her knapsack. “Here,” she offered, pressing an object into Karamatsu’s hand. He studied the thing, black and shaped angularly, he wasn’t sure what to make of it. There were questions swimming in his expression. “They’re called sunglasses,” she said through a bubbly smile, “They help dim sunlight so you can see better, you just have to put them on over your eyes.” Karamatsu seemed unsure of what to do despite her description, though this allowed Erin to gently take the sunglasses from him and carefully placed them on his face. He blinked once. Twice. Even a third time, until it finally dawned on him that she was right - the sun was a lot less harsh in his peripheral vision! “A marvel!” he exclaimed, hands holding onto the temples in curiosity, “I never knew my eyes could be shielded so easily from her daunting rays!” A soft laugh escaped Erin, “They make you look pretty cool too, Karamatsu.” His eyes grew wide with emotion, her comment going straight to his heart, “I look…cool?” She nodded, “A hundred percent. And feel free to keep them please, if it helps you see better with the sun out, I’m glad I could be of use to you.” Karamatsu shook his head vigorously, his words failing him as he felt sheer joy overcome him. Erin said her goodbyes for the evening, reiterating her promise to visit again soon. As she walked back to her vehicle, she felt a flutter followed by a pang in her chest from that interaction just then. Karamatsu, he decided, would never take the sunglasses off again.
Each visit she returned, Karamatsu found himself growing ever closer to her. She was unbelievably kind - not only to him, but to his brothers to boot. Jyushimatsu had told them all about her the first time they’d met - and he couldn’t lie, his interest was piqued when the younger brother mentioned she wasn’t violent or scared of him. Little did he know how truly brilliant she was. Sandy brown locks that framed her ever-smiling face; a voice that spoke of the joys of life and the importance of using knowledge to give back and protect the planet. But her eyes…oh those dazzling orbs were what drew him in the most. They weren’t quite as green as Choromatsu’s scales, but they reminded him of the lush earth that was his home. Yet when they hit the sunlight just right, he swore he saw flecks of his signature color in them. The good nature she carried and her ever intelligent mind took a python’s hold on him. She was a beauty all her own. Her visits, no matter how frequent, began to feel too short to the second eldest. Karamatsu struggled with not being able to see Erin on a daily basis like he wanted. When confronting himself with these thoughts and feelings, he was only able to recognize them as emotions his mother used to talk about often when referring to her marriage. It didn’t really hit him in full until her last visit, when his scales had begun to shimmer upon seeing her. At that moment, Karamatsu would make up his mind for their next meeting. He walked her down their normal route to exit the rainforest at first, with him thanking her for showing all of his brothers how to plant and care for a garden of tomatoes. “Ah, darling, if you’ll wait a second” he stopped suddenly, shifting his body to the right, “There was one thing I wanted to show you quickly before you headed off for the evening, if you’ll follow me.” He guided her off of the path - an interference that would make a lesser person nervous, but Erin trusted Karamatsu wholeheartedly, she knew he’d never bring her to harm. Curiosity wracked her brain however, “Where are we going, Kara?” His grin was unnoticeably bashful, but he slowly parted a covering of vines to show her just where they’d headed: a small lake, crystalline blue and surrounded by the same bioluminescent flowers she’d gathered months ago. Her gasp was audible, “Oh my goodness, is it safe to swim in? Karamatsu, this is beautiful!” As soon as he confirmed so, the need to dive right in overcame her, and she quickly removed her shoes, running to the bank and submerging herself up to her elbows in a minute’s time. “C’mon you silly snake, come in with me!” she giggled as she waved him over. He followed suit, his tail propelling him into the water with serpentine grace. He circled around her, their laughter being shared as he was splashed at as a moving target. Karamatsu felt his scales shimmer again, the overwhelming need to hold her close to him settling in while his buoyant tail reflected the sunlight in gorgeous golden hues. Erin marveled at the sight, “I didn’t know you could do that! Is that an aquatic response?”
Delighted in her amazement, Karamatsu forgot himself, “Not quite, dear Erin, it’s a courting resp-” and his voice caught in his throat when he realized what he was saying. The terror that plagued him was indescribable, his heart thrashing in his chest. He didn’t plan on telling her so soon. Erin looked up at him with softened doe eyes, “Karamatsu…?” The blue naga swallowed thickly. “I-It’s a courting response…” he stammered, eyes darting everywhere but her face now, “I…I-I like you, Erin.” It was silent for a moment. Karamatsu snapped his eyes shut, unable to face any potential rejection she gave him…only to feel the gentle touch of hands on his face. A question posed at his lips, but they would die on the pair that silenced them. Erin draped her arms around his neck, leaning into the kiss a bit more. Karamatsu instinctively encased his arms around her waist, pulling her even closer. His tongue flitted into her mouth, wrapping around her own in a playful manner. A clawed hand tangled itself in her hair, before finally pulling himself from her lips. “Erin, I…” Karamatsu paused, feeling unsure of what to say. With warmth and adoration tucked in her voice, Erin filled the silence, “I knew what I felt for you was different, Karamatsu…I’m so happy that you feel the same.” “I had no idea…” came his subdued response. Her smile turned to a playful smirk, “I wasn’t exactly subtle about it, Karamatsu…” and her fingers tapped his sunglasses. Flushed at her words, Karamatsu drew her in for a warm embrace. His chin slotted onto her shoulder blade, he whispered, “You were wrong, my flower, it’s I that should be happy you feel the same about me.” Erin pressed her hands firmly into his back, her head leaning on his shoulder, a wave of tenderness blanketing her. For learning so much as she had about nagas, she knew had far more to wonder about their courtship practices. But this discovery, she was thrilled to uncover, was one she would lovingly explore with the very blue naga that shared her affections.

Note
Um. The latest small god (Yucan Tu) has an image description that is fairly accurate. But when it describes the beak tied over his own, the description calls it a macaw beak? Macaws have beaks that are sharply pointed down with a big round bump, like most parrots. From the length, girth, and color patterns of the big beak, as well as the story, I’m fairly certain it should be described as a toucan beak.
Absolutely! When first posted, these images did not have image tags. In adding them, Lee (who named him Yucan Tu as a Spoonerism for Toucan You) was so distracted that he used the wrong name (and feels like a dunce). That said, the tag has been corrected. Thank you for caring enough to let us know. <3

Hugo Madrigal
Tumblr media
Inspired by @hannahhook7744's Encanto AU, and her own character headcanons.
Third image made using https://picrew.me/en/image_maker/1558575
Fourth image made using https://www.dolldivine.com/la-colombiana
Fifth image made in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Hugo’s full name is Hugo Diego Madrigal.
His first name means “mind”, and his middle name means “teaching”.
He is the first adopted child of Camilo Madrigal and Marcos Vasquez.
He has slightly curly black hair, brown skin, and brown eyes. He has a tiny mustache that he worked very hard for, and will never shave.
He is fourteen years old.
He has two younger biological brothers, José, younger by five years, and Héctor, younger by eight.
He likes girls, but is single.
His gift is the ability to manipulate insects. He acts as the queen bee or ant of any insect he sees, and is able to control them that way. He personally loves his gift, and the Encanto has no problems with it either…it’s him they dislike.
His door portrays him smiling, with his arms stretched out on either side of him in a t-pose. Various flying insects swarm around him.
His room looks like an entomologist’s dreamhouse. The floors and walls are wood, and the walls are covered in informational posters about insects and bugs, as well as dead (of natural causes) ones pinned up in glass cases. His bed has bug-patterned sheets. He has potted plants everywhere, and on every available flat surface are his pet bugs in terrariums. Pepito’s perch sits by his bed.
His symbol is a horned beetle, mid flight.
Hugo is very quiet, and Camilo is very loud. They don’t always see eye to eye, but Camilo never makes Hugo feel lesser for his oddities.
Marcos and Hugo are both quiet, and they seem to understand each other more than Camilo. As Marcos was an orphan too, he can also connect to him through that experience.
His birth parents were very neglectful of him and his brothers before they died when he was eight. Hugo was essentially the only parent José and Héctor had, and he rarely ever saw their actual parents. Hugo doesn’t hold them in very high regard.
José, like Camilo, is loud and eccentric, compared to Hugo’s calm quiet. They get along better though, because they lived with their birth parents for the longest, and Hugo basically had to raise José.
Héctor was much too young to remember their parents, but Hugo still acts like a surrogate parent to him. They both are more quiet, and so get along better. Pepito the toucan also loves Héctor.
He ends up hanging out with the other “outcast” cousins: Sofía, Fuega, Andrés, Zoe, and Óscar, not because of his gift, but because of ableism.
He gets along best with Bruno, Dolores, and Zoe.
He is autistic and selectively mute. This is the reason why so many townspeople shun him.
His Tio Antonio gave him a service animal, in the form of Pepito the toucan. Pepito helps him stim, and negates his anxiety.
His favorite bugs are butterflies, beetles, bees, and ants.
Despite the fact that he barely talks, he gives the best advice, and is very wise for his age.
He doesn’t like large crowds, and prefers to stick with his cousins when they go into town.
His favorite colors are yellow, red, pink, and orange.
