So i was thinking abt your post on light symbolism in Mgsv and i was wondering if you could talk more on the meaning of the blue lighting? In Peacewalker the red=bad and yellow=good is obvious but what are the examples of blue meaning uncertainty other than in the scene of Ocelot confessing? Is it exclusive to V? i can't find the post rn but i thought it was really interesting!!

Okay so there's a lot of ways i can go about this but I'm also going to be extremely upfront and say that mgs1-4+PW are slightly harder to get good quality screenshots of, and I see fewer recordings of them so I fully admit to having a less-than-perfect memory of them.

V is also easier to pick scenes from because it does the most "WTF, where is that weird-colored lens flare even coming from?" cinematic stuff. The other games have more direct integration into scenes and even the narrative.

The most explicit case of blue as dishonesty/unreliable narrator/dramatic irony/facade cracking/whatever you want to call it, is in the MGS4 novel. I don't really know that it's canon as much as a canon-enhancer, like an art book would be. I know that Kojima has said that Itoh got the spirit of what he was going for more than anyone else, so I'm willing to abide by his interpretation of the snake family (snamily?) geneticist surrounded by blue roses:

tl;dr: the blue of the blue roses is what makes them unnatural. Beautiful, but manmade. Snake is also genetically engineered, manmade, "unnatural," and at times considers himself less than human because of it.

This is sort of the explicit culmination of something that's been going on since MGS1, where the whole map is basically this weird, unnatural, unsettling blue color.

Which, for me, even playing the shadow moses smash level when I was younger felt ~weird~ due to the color and lighting. When I got around to playing MGS, the feeling was definitely still there.

I'll even offer grey fox as an example because he and Snake are basically the same color in their concept art, and Snake's definitely blue in-game. Making him this red-and-blue, murdery-but-something's-up figure...

Was it intentional? Honestly, I don't know. I lean towards assuming it was a palette limitation for hardware/performance that happened to play nice thematically. Add in the fact that straight-up black tends to look bad graphically for the same reason that it works well in actual stealth situations and...yeah, using a lot of blue makes sense. No reason that a medium's "limitations" shouldn't be considered just as meaningful and integral as its benefits though.

Maybe the weakest example I have is in 3, where Volgin's lightning turns the whole torture room blue (or at least, as blue as it can get with that piss filer)

Everyone in this room is fucking over everyone else in this room in impossible to comprehend ways. We've walked in on 5D chess that is only about to be made clear at the end of this cutscene, but the only person in this room loyal to Volgin is Volgin.

Consider:

She feels bad for Snake. Kinda obvious I suppose, but she's also planning to triple cross him. I mean, technically at this point she's probably still planning to kill him. Either way, She's definitely planning to fuck over Volgin and either you or the Chinese Philosophers.

The Boss is being The Boss and not telling ANYONE wtf is going on, (also planning to fuck over Volgin)

And THIS WHORE is over here clutching his fucking LOCKET OF YOUR HAIR (read: the bullet he fucked up with while fighting you that he wears around his neck)

...plus he was actually supposed to be fucking over Volgin in the first place as your contact before Eva got in the way. ...which she also does at the end when she cock blocks him ANYWAYS.

Then we get this lovely little quote that I've been thinking about since playing the game. Something about this feels like it's implying that the color of his eyes are unnatural or make him seem dishonest. Ironic, given the current company.

In Peace Walker specifically it's easy to tell when colors are being used for effect, since there's only really three used in the whole game, red, blue, and gold. Blue is used a lot for grief in this game, as it it's a game that deals heavily with the topic. Like, say, in Strangelove's first cutscene, where she's challenging BB to kill her.

And a moment after that we get one of the brightest pops of blue in the game! There aren't very many of them, most of the blues are dull, like on Strangelove's glasses here. But in this scene, not only are Snake's eyes blue, he also has blue highlights on his face. It really brings the two of them together in their grief over the same woman.

Strangelove also refers to the Boss AI as "[her] morpho," the kind of butterfly that BB references in PW.

Not so coincidentally, this is *also* the kind of butterfly that appears at the end of the Paz questline, which disappears in a flash of blue light, in this sort of combined grieving-and-unreality scene that I think makes blue throughout the series so beautiful.

It's not just one thing, it's many things that are intimately woven together. I guess you could more accurately say that it's mental/emotional hurt and old wounds where red is more physical/immediate hurt?

That's not to say that every single time someone is grieving or lying or is dishonest or is something they don't appear to be that they'll be ringed in blue or anything, but rather that it's something to watch for because there's often a sort of color confirmation. Same as how the snakes don't tend to wear red even when they do a lot of killing

I'm also very much still working out the symbolism of blue in the games honestly. These are mostly my working theories but if anyone has anything else to add I'm all ears!

Happy to oblige!

Our model today will be the legendary late Meat Loaf from the ‘I’d do anything for love’ music video! I’m just obsessed with Meat Loaf right now, don’t ask me why. I’ll do my best to describe the thought process as I go on!

Step 1.

Well of course you just start with a circle, nothing else to say. Ya know like the spongebob meme…

Step 2.

So just starting to map out about where the main facial features go. Just eyeballing and keeping it loose. I really never use any of the well known measuring techniques and honestly just draw the features onto a mostly blank head. I don’t really like most face guide techniques. 

Like for example there’s tutorials that say you have to map out the face by lining up the eyes with the edge of the nose or measuring the proper width of a nose bridge with the width of the eye and all these little ‘shortcuts’ and rules. I’m sure we’ve all seen a ‘how to draw a face’ tutorial and while I know these are helpful for some people, I find them a little stifling to expression. They give you a good map to essentially draw a flawless, wooden, conventionally attractive model but not everyone looks the same.  People have bigger noses and different snapped eyes and different length foreheads. Like, just fucking look at Meat Loaf!

Okay, rant over. Just embrace peoples unique beauty is all I’m trying to say and take that into account when you draw.

Step 3.

Starting to actually draw some of the features. As you can see I thought I put my little guideline for his eyes a little high for the shape of Meat Loaf’s face (Which I’d later change back in the line art, haha) I also draw the eyebrow line first before I draw the eyes, I don’t know why.

For noses I tend to draw a few circles for the nostrils and the tip then give a loose line for the bridge up to the brow bone. It works very well for most nose shapes. Keep it loose and tighten up the shapes as you go.

On a specific note, when I draw people with open mouths I almost always first map out the face with the jaw closed then tilt the jaw open as I go on. Something about immediately drawing that long line from the nose to the chin for an open jaw tends to just visually throws me off. Working digital has some very helpful benefits 😅

Step 4.

Okay, now that’s starting to look like a person. (Ignore the prosthetics!)

I think in this stage you can start to see my own style flare coming into play. I tend to exaggerate brow bones, lip shape and nose shape. While it’s not completely accurate to the original I think it adds to the features of whoever I’m drawing without going to a full caricature. I suppose this could be adding more ‘shape’ to something so it doesn’t appear so stiff. Highlight people uniqueness, ya know?

I’ll choose ‘expression’ over ‘accuracy’ any day 😅

Step 5.

Whoa that was a big change! …but actually not really.

Now that I’m confident(ish) I’ve got his features mostly correct I start thinking about shading and how it frames and highlights his face. I put most of my work into the expression of the line work so I’m just mapping out what needs to be highlighted and what needs to be black, essentially. And also very loosely drawing his hair 😅 I never put any thought into drawing hair. Really it’s just a shape they frames the face for me and that how I think about it.

It’s also around this point in the sketch that I spend a little more time ‘sculpting’ out the features a little more. I loosely put in their shape and about where they are then I take a little time to make them a little tighter and more accurate.

Now it’s on to cleaner line Art!

Step 6.

So really at this point it’s just tracing. For me specifically, I put A LOT of emphasis into line weight and I think that’s what makes my work unique. I also put a lot of emphasis into the black space of the piece as well. Most of my shading and shape comes from my line art rather than my colors, and that’s just how I like it. 

Final touches

After I remove the sketch layer underneath i usually add a few little detail lines or more cross hatching to emphasis certain areas. Just really stylizing it more to my liking. 

I wasn’t planning on coloring it but I spent like 5 minutes putting in some loose colors because I thought the contrasting lighting looked interesting... I guess that’s all I have to say about that.

Now I hope you all are filled with the urge to go watch the ‘I’d do anything for love’ music video. It’s... a ride.

I hope this was sooomewhat helpful and nice little glimpse of my process. I want to emphasis again that I personally believe there’s no ‘right way’ to draw a face. There’s no specific cheat code on how to draw expression good. There’s no ‘ideal’ face. I feel like if you adhere to a rigorous guide for every face and expression you draw then it takes away from the feeling in a drawing.

So all the of The Strangers’ episodes are really evocative and well written and I have to say that it was a very, very close call for almost every single season and I still cannot really decide if I truly like Mag 1 more than Mag 34 but I have to say that Mag 1 is so very good at drawing you into the world and works as a stand alone piece.

Honestly Mag 81 is absolutely brilliant and serves to contextualise so much of season 1 and 2 and ends up being incredibly important to the world as a whole.  That plus the delivery and excellent premise gives it a slight edge over Mag 172 that is a pure exploration of the controlling and manipulative nature of addiction

The Vast

So the first half of season 5 does an amazing job of truely fleshing out each fear and the Vast is no exception.  The split between the two protagonists makes it clear that The Vast is not just about big things or empty space but deep existentialism and the fear of the inevitability of life.

Although Mag 164 does have a very particular place in my heart and in the history of literature due to its topic and the precise time it came out, but it does pale compared to just how brilliant Mag 32 is.   As the first real mention of the entities it reveals just little enough to keep the suspense whilst providing just enough answers that it's obvious in hindsight.  But once more none of that matters in the face of “There is a wasps nest in my attic” the shere delivery of this episode has placed it in many people's favourite lists.

Mag 42 is very interesting.  I’ve mentioned in some of my other posts that Im pretty sure that Jonny Sims finds some fears harder to write and the Slaughter is definitely one of them but I’ve only come to this conclusion by looking at how frequently they show up but listening to the show you would never be able to tell and Mag 42 is one brilliant example of this it is a brilliant way to expand on how the Slaughter manifests.

I remember the reaction to Mag 173.  It was so incredibly powerful to watch most of the fanbase (myself included) react in exactly the same way the characters did to the reality of this domain.  First with dawning realisation, then anger followed sudden confusion at where to direct that anger.  It was quite eye opening to say the least.

This part really stood out to me, it’s an attitude I feel like wwx implies with his inner narration a few times but most clearly says here: he’s not one for allowing himself to exaggerate how bad his circumstances are/could be even a little bit - he’s already lived through some extreme low points and found a way to keep going, so he never makes sweeping statements about what he couldn’t live without (Inner JingYi: you’re supposed to say you’d be lost without him here!!!) Instead he seems to accept as a given that being alive doesn’t guarantee him any pleasantness or joy at all, and as a result his feelings toward being in TRUE LOVE are surprisingly pragmatic, but also colored with such gratitude. There are a lot of things in the novel that struck me, like this, as being just a little to the left of familiar tropes/sentiments, and were more touching for it. Whether it be the influence of culture difference as opposed to what I’m used to reading in most western romance stories, or MXTX’s unique outlook, or a combination of both, it was really refreshing and made me pause over it. Not “I can’t imagine living without you” but “I could be living without you, but instead I get to be with you and I think that’s the best thing that could happen.”

ahh... it’s a really good story. JGY is a great character. One of the most interesting differences for me between drama watching vs. novel reading experience is that without an actor to bat his vulnerable doe eyes at you and smile faintly with his cute dimples, the book does not go much out of its way to try to lull the reader into a false sense of security around him or *endear* him to you the way the show does. But just by seeing events through wei wuxian’s POV, its still enough to evoke pity or understanding towards him. The overall impression is a bit more detached though, there’s less emphasis on the spectacle of how he could manipulate everyone closest to him and more of a general feeling of resigned tragedy that everyones the worst on this bitch of an earth.

aaaa the end... final random thoughts? No not final, I would like to please keep discussing at length and exhaustively, all the time please - CQL has gotta be one of the best TV adaptations I’ve seen. ANY adaptation of anything would be lucky to be so good!! reading the novel has just made me appreciate it even more.

- I don’t think I can do justice to what I find most fascinating about comparing the two versions briefly, to do that I need to get drunk and ramble at my friends for hours but... the condensed version is something like this. Really all the significant differences between the two versions (besides the ones which can be attributed to censorship and therefore aren’t worth discussing) are a side effect of the structure of how the story is told - there’s barely anything changed arbitrarily. Aside from having a cold opening, the drama sticks to a very linear version of the story, and I think for a TV show or film, that’s probably the best way to do it. We see everything, we get shocked and tricked and betrayed and surprised along with the characters, we feel the biggest impact at the climactic scenes having experienced all the build-up. The novel on the other hand is not only much more non-linear in WHEN we learn bits and pieces of information, but that information is also obfuscated under wei wuxian’s multiple layers of Unreliable Narratoritis, which are as follows: 1) difficulty remembering things because of personality/avoiding painful memories/actual memory loss, 2) No Homo Goggles still on, and 3) a wry sense of humor that makes the reader unsure of how much they can trust his attitude toward things, especially near the beginning. The experience of reading is a puzzle the reader has to mentally piece together through all of the above listed camouflage, and the puzzle itself is a three-sided mystery: One - How Bad of a guy was Wei WuXian really, and how exactly did all the bad stuff in his life go down; Two - wangxian epic pride & prejudice gambits; Three - political murder mystery. (I love stories like this btw... though I fully admit I’m glad I watched first this time bc it might have taken me a long time to tackle otherwise.) Because of this, where the drama wants to pull you in and submerge you in all the most potent emotional parts, the novel in direct contrast deliberately side-steps around these things and asks that you hurt yourself by filling in the blanks. In fact the more intense emotions and painful memories involved, whether it be his relationship with jiang yanli, his DEATH, the darkest days of war times etc, the more the novel evasively withholds details. I actually really like both styles of storytelling but each one is obviously way better suited to its medium. ANYWAY.... THATS BASICALLY WHERE MY BRAINS AT WHILE IM READING GAY SWORD WIZARD BOOKS

- The extras are so saturated with domestic married bliss that it’s a good thing I stopped taking pictures because I’d just take a picture of every page. this is too much for me to take... I did jump the gun a few times and read a few fanfics while I was still mid-read of the book (I tried to hold out but alas I am mortal) and at one point after finishing I was like “wow what fic was it in where lwj says something cute and wwx kisses him in public but they’re in the corner of the restaurant so no one really sees... OH NO WAIT that was actually in there.” and ... and that’s the LEAST OF IT... *stares into the distance* theyre married wow

- I ofc couldn’t help but see a few vague blogs beforehand so honestly I was braced for something like, wildly ooc for the sake of porn to happen in the extras... “Run Away” - THEORY

"YEONJUN : RESIDENT OF A DIFFERENT WORLD"

TXT Storyline - Part 2 of ???

(a/n: I rewatched the Run Away mv and im confused. I will literally sacrifice my brain for TXT fhkdjcdk. This is the second part of my theory series for TXT's mvs and im pretty sure it will not end early since there are more mvs to come and more migraines to attack me.)

(another a/n: I will clarify things in here better than my theory before because I theorized that thirty minutes after I woke up lmao help.)

0:08 - 0:22 - In the first scene, we see Beomgyu looking all troubled. His facial expression showed a mixture of being confused, lost, and frustrated. As I stated in the previous summary, Beomgyu is a sociopath but he also has the real side of him that rarely ever showed up. In this scene, he shows that side (lonely, regretful, lost, etc.).

0:22 - 0:28 - In this scene, Yeonjun is cutting up a square-shaped hole in his notebook. It also shows that he has a cut on his thumb and he also owns a small stuffed toy that was lying beside his notebook.

This particular scene honestly made me confused but in my understanding, I think the toy was like a symbol of his youth.

Or for some reason, it made me think that the toy was representing either him or Beomgyu.

0:29 - 0:37 - Hueningkai is vandalizing the school road with a yellow and blue chalk = representation of his youth. The sketch somewhat represents a lightning.

My dumb ass knows that yellow and blue are like TXT's colors for that album but I JUST HAD TO RESEARCH WHAT DOES THE TWO COLORS MEAN? (I'm an overthinker, I know)

Yellow = mind, intellect, optimism, and cheerfulness. But it also meant impatience, criticism, and cowardice.

Blue = trust, peace, loyalty, and integrity. But also means conservatism and frigidity.

The meaning of the colors reflects to Hueningkai's character in the "Can't You See Me?" MV perfectly.

0:37 - 0:44 - Soobin (like in the CYSM MV) is alone in the classroom (probably with Yeonjun). I took a long ass glance at the whiteboard Soobin was drawing on.

We see the stuffed toy = Yeonjun (or Beomgyu dhcbjcb) Cats = reference to previous song "Cat and Dog" A shark = ??? A door = the concept lmao Fire = The thing that will happen later on (or BTS jvfhj)

So UM- hELLO??? THERE'S THE WORD FIRE ON THE WHITEBOARD???

Something tells me that Soobin knows what's about to happen...

lmao back to the topic, Taehyun takes off his airpods and stands in the middle of the school halls. He closes his eyes as if he was vibing to music or he sees a vision...

Could it be a vision from the future?

0:56 - 0:59 - Soobin takes a look at his drawing and puts on red filtered glasses. He, then, sees symbols that move around his sketch of the "door".

It's either Soobin knows the other world or Soobin knows what the future beholds.

1:15 - 1:21 - We see Beomgyu putting a band-aid over Yeonjun's cut.

mHm- This was Beomgyu's pretentious act of kindness towards Yeonjun since this clearly connects with the idea of Beomgyu's sociopathic intentions.

It is said that when a person is manipulative, they most likely don't physically appear scary.

They appear as the nicest and softest people.

Very much alike with Beomgyu's character. (ARE WE SURE HE SOCIOPATH THO???)

1:25 - 1:29 - In this scene, Taehyun stares at the camera all the way up until Yeonjun and the others came.

If you took this the "mETapHOriCal" way, Taehyun is staring into the eyes of something that cannot be seen by others.

1:32 - 1:37 - Yeonjun's glasses caused the fire in the room. The other boys noticed but they did nothing until Beomgyu came with a fire extinguisher. How did Beomgyu know about the fire when he was floors away from their classroom? Yeonjun looked worried and hopeless like it was all his fault.

Why does he looked so panicked? Why does it feel like he knows what's about to happen and what he was doing?

1:52 - 1:53 - In this scene, Beomgyu failed to stop the fire from burning Yeonjun's notebook EVEN with the fire extinguisher. Beomgyu gives that same look he gave Taehyun in the "CYSM" MV (Time stamp: 2:14 - 2:16//CYSM MV) and also from the start of the this MV (Time stamp: 0:08 - 0:22)

2:09 - 2:17 - In this shot we see the boys hanging out in the school's balcony, the symbols outside the school, and a magical fire extinguisher.

Symbols outside the school = also the symbols Soobin saw with his red filtered glasses.

The fire extinguisher Beomgyu brought was the reason why the fire was never prevented. The fire extinguisher had something to do with the world Soobin saw with his glasses, the world Taehyun saw in his vision, or the future that Beomgyu wanted to prevent from happening.

2:21 - 2:28 - Here we see Taehyun reading a book titled "Put Out The Fire" while Soobin and Hueningkai were trying to help Taehyun. In this scene, the lighting changed to red again as we see Beomgyu resting his head on a sleeping Yeonjun.

This scene showed that Beomgyu was trying to distract Yeonjun from helping the three find a solution to stop the fire from spreading throughout the school.

This is a sign of manipulation as he is forming a deep connection with Yeonjun throughout this MV.

2:38 - 2:59 - Yeonjun finally wakes up from his sleep as the fire started spreading more quickly. The five of them ran outside of the library, clearly failing to put out the fire.

They arrived at the school's gym pool and if you look closely...

there's an art of a shark deep down in one of the pools.

I think this is proof that either Beomgyu or Soobin knows about the future events or the other world.

3:06 - 3:13 - The five boys are playing together again, clearly distracted from the fire that's spreading through campus. Then, we see a shot of Taehyun and Soobin doing a handshake together.

Taehyun = seeing the future (???) Soobin = seeing a different dimension (???)

3:27 - 3:35 - Soobin watches the other members play together lovingly as he finds out there is a door in the pool. He wondered who in the world could've put a door in the pool?

Then, he realizes that he is near it.

3:37 - 4:16 - The five of them went underwater, discovering a new world and the door Soobin has been sketching.

I forgot to mention earlier that the sketch that Yeonjun was cutting up on his notebook was the exact same door Soobin drew on the whiteboard.

Does this mean all of them know that there's a new world/dimension?

Yeonjun pulls out the same glasses that caused the fire earlier and guess what? The door was on fire again.

4:18 - 4:20 - They started to have fun while Beomgyu gives the look of victory, knowing that he won and that he distracted them from the fire that was occuring outside the world/dimension they were in.

4:20 - 4:27 - It showed Taehyun and Soobin staring at the camera during different times = they have visions.

It also showed a glimpse of Yeonjun's keychain/stuffed toy as it transitions to them running from the fire.

Lastly, it shows that Hueningkai is still in the water. Hueningkai's face expressed both confusion and worry.

There is definitely something off.

4:31 - 4:35 - This scene showed glimpses of the past events

~Yeonjun causing a fire ~Taehyun reading the "Put Out The Fire" book ~Them arriving at the gymnasium pool ~Yeonjun cutting the sketch of the door in the notebook ~Them seeing the fire spread as the notebook Yeonjun drew on continued to burn

4:39 - 4:51 - The five of them looked at the burning door in amazement since they discovered a whole new world underwater. Yeonjun looked at it like he's seen this door before and HE WASN'T EVEN SURPRISED. Then, he removed the band-aid and the cut he had earlier was completely gone.

How?

4:54 - 5:16 - The five of them decided to leave. Weird thing? It was like they were just casually leaving a place and not A WHOLE NEW WORLD. The MV ends with Taehyun being left with Yeonjun's stuffed toy.

Summary/What I found out through listing every scene with details:

Soobin and Taehyun were the only members who were seeing visions about the different world. However, Soobin sees visions of future events while Taehyun only sees visions about the other world.

Beomgyu, on the other hand, turns into a NEUTRAL CHARACTER. A different creature? Could be. A good person? Could be. For me, his character is very hard to read and understand due to MY LACK OF SOURCE. He is either protecting Yeonjun from the different world or he is trying to blind Yeonjun from seeing the truth. Also, Beomgyu clearly knows what goes on in the future so we don't really know who's the bad guy here.

Yeonjun is a resident of the other world. HOW DID I CONCLUDE THIS? The last part really got me, okay? The four other members were amazed but he was just keeping up this blank face... like he has already seen it before. He was also the one who lead the members to the gymnasium pool like he knows what's there.

If you think Hueningkai is the only one who doesn't know anything, you're wrong. (Time stamp 4:20 - 4:27) In my guess, I think Hueningkai either has telepathic abilities...

or he sees visions, too.

What was the first piece of art you can remember making as a child?

My mom is an artist, so she was always encouraging me to do artwork. i remember drawing a chickadee at around 7 years old that ended up being framed and sold at a charity auction. My mom had handed it the charity organizer and they decided to put it up for auction....it was pretty cool

Have you ever been able to sense the spirits around you? (ie house hobs & brownies, kobolds, domovoy, nisse, or even if you’re in the right area nymphs or court fae & plant/tree spirits and such)

When i was Wiccan, it was to not curse, not work with demons...so forth. i broke those, because i found out the Wicca path is...well not for me but also inherently biased towards magick and i do not like the idea that the only real magick is light magick, on top of the threefold law, their classification of deities alongside demons being viewed as evil (plus uh...the guy who created Wicca was a disgusting man. Wicca is 75 years old.) Broke that off and became pagan and luciferian which makes me feel much much better.

as summer turns into fall you make more friends but you mostly hang out with the boys because they’re funny and nice to you and also Mark is there and we love our boy

my cat has recently taken to peeing on textiles in the house. now she's in vacation (during the summer she stays with my aunt) but im dreading her return. i love her more than anything, but its becoming very hard for me to cope with the extra stress. and the smell is very hard to get rid of :( idk what happened, she used to be the cleanest cat and she doesnt even act like we pissed her off! any tips for helping her please?

Absolutely! 

So the first thing to do while she’s gone is get yourself a good enzyme remover and get rid of all the smell in the house. Nature’s miracle is the one I use but the key thing is ‘enzyme remover.’ That will actually break down the ammonia and get rid of that smell. 

The next step is to try to determine the root cause of the behavior. If she used to pee in the litter box and now she doesn’t, something has changed to set that behavior in motion. We just need to find out what. 

Some common reasons for cats to pee outside the litter box are 1) medical reasons (if the litter box is uncomfortable to her she will not use it), 2) cleanliness reasons (if the litter box is too smelly she won’t use it), and 3) territorial insecurities. Let’s look at each of these possibilities. 

1) Medical reasons: is your cat declawed? I’ll spare you my lecture on why I’m so opposed to declawing cats, and suffice it to say that if she IS declawed, then the kind of litter you’re using could have begun to hurt her paws. Declawed cats have lots of problems with arthritis as they get older, and boxes with coarse or grainy litter are going to be hard for them to use. If this is the case, try getting a softer litter. They make them the consistency of sawdust pellets; those are pretty good. Also, make sure she is easily able to get into and out of the box itself. It should be open and low to the ground (no ramps or covers, etc.) in an easily accessible part of the house. 

2) Cleanliness. Cats are fastidious and like their litter boxes to be cleaned on a regular basis. If she shares the house with other cats, there should be at least 1 litter box per animal, plus one extra (cats are very territorial, so forcing them to share space can start causing territory marking issues). Additionally they should ideally be scooped at least once a day, and changed out completely once every week or two. The litter box should again be open–closed litter boxes tend to get incredibly smelly over time, making them very unfavorable to the cats–and easy to access, and plenty big. 

3) Let’s get into the last and most likely reason for her sudden fondness of fabrics: territorial insecurity. 

I’ll add a brief disclaimer that I’m not 100% sure what you mean by ‘textiles’ but in case you mean ‘clothes,’ that sounds VERY much like territorial insecurity. Cats mark their territory by scent–it’s why they rub up against us, why they rub their mouths on everything, why they spray. (And yes, even female cats scent spray). When they start spraying on things we use a lot–our clothes, our furniture, our bedding, what have you–what they’re trying to do is overlay their scent with ours. It’s a way of reassuring themselves that yes, they belong here too, because here is their scent. It’s a way of trying to say, “I’m here I’m here notice me please I’m here hey!!! Hey!! I matter! I’m part of this family too!!” 

Now, figuring out the cause of this insecurity is what might be tricky, but honestly addressing the litter box concerns could take care of a lot of it. Making sure she has her own space to go to the bathroom (especially if there’s another animal in the house, maybe a new cat or a dog that wasn’t there before) and a place to retreat that’s hers (places up high are ideal, and if they look out a window even better!) will help a lot. Look into getting catwalk shelves so she can retreat up high and survey her territory. 

You might also make sure there aren’t strays around your house. But if that were the case I’d expect to see her marking along walls rather than on clothes. So I’m guessing we’re looking at territorial insecurity here. 

The biggest takeaway here should be the litter box. Make sure it’s clean, that there are plenty of them, that it’s accessible to her easily and that she’s physically comfortable when inside it. If you combine that with the good enzyme cleaner, then hopefully she’ll remember where she’s supposed to go. 

If she persists with the odd behavior though, then please get her checked out by the vet. Cats are creatures of habit; they don’t dramatically change behavior without some kind of root cause.
