You and Taka were very close. From the start of this sick, horrible killing game you were forced to play, you two naturally gravitated towards eachother. You formed an extremely tight bond in a very short amount of time.

A bond tight enough to spend almost all of your free time together, sometimes in each other’s dorm rooms or around the school.

Y’all vibed hardcore-

But, with everything going on, Taka started to feel... A bit down.

The school... Wasn’t exactly a school. There were no teachers, no classes no schoolwork or homework. To most students, that would be heaven (if it weren’t for the fact everyone was trapped inside the school for the rest of their time), but for the Ultimate Moral Compass... It was almost torture.

Taka took a lot of pride in his hard work. The countless flawless grades and extra credit (that he didn’t even need, but got anyway), constant praise from his teachers and family for nothing but said work, it warped his sense of self-worth to the point that, if he wasn’t working or being successful, he didn’t matter.

And you took notice of that. You took notice of how he seemed to get more down with each passing day where he couldn’t study or show off his current knowledge.

And Taka started to get self-loathing thoughts about the whole situation. How he was useless, unworthy, or just a bother if he couldn’t work.

He knew this was unhealthy, but he kept it to himself for quite some time, until he couldn’t take having these thoughts anymore. He needed someone to talk to, and he knew you could help.

It was somewhere in the afternoon, around 6-7 PM, you couldn’t bother to look at the exact time. 

You heard a somewhat frantic knock at the door, and went to crack it open. Peeping through the opening, you noticed Taka’s tearful expression. 

You threw open the door, letting your friend inside, “Taka, what’s wrong?! Did something happen?!”, you panicked, closing the door after him.

Taka quickly wiped his eyes with his sleeve, already feeling bad for making you worry over nothing.

“N-no, no! Nothing happened!”, he reassured you, and you let out a relieved sigh. But... What was wrong, then?

“Are you ok, Ishi?”, you grabbed your friend’s hand, leading him to your bed. You both sat down, as you laced your fingers with his, not planning to let go, “Tell me what’s wrong.”

Taka ignored his quick heartbeat, as he told you about how he felt. His voice shook, and his vision was blurred with tears as he rambled about how useless he felt. If he couldn’t study, take tests or answer teachers’ questions, what was he even good for?

You pulled him into a hug, letting him rest his head on your shoulder. You debunked every bad word he said about himself, telling him how his talent and academic achievements didn’t define him as a person. He was a wonderful, caring friend who you were incredibly lucky to have, not some studying machine you expected to be the best at everything.

You knew how much he valued knowledge, so you suggested starting some new hobbies together like... Art, or chess, or sewing... Anything you could think of at the moment that would get you two to learn and expand your horizons.

Your touch and reassuring words comforted him... You were so considerate with your words and found a way to get him out of that low, low state so easily. You even wanted to try those hobbies with him! He never really felt so cared for. Your hand ran through his hair so delicately, he felt like he could melt. He never wanted to let go...

He was so lucky to have you.

 Byakuya Togami :

Byakuya was in the school library, as per usual. Reading a book about who-knows-what and trying to distract himself from the dark fog slowly forming in his head.

He was thinking about everything that was taken away from him. From his success and wealth, to his family’s Corporation, everything that he fought for and righteously owned... Gone. Probably forever.

It messed with him, it really did. He felt like all he went through to get to the top was worthless. That his years of fighting were wasted on nothing.

He tried to push these feelings away. Wallowing over the fact that he was trapped in Hope’s Peak until his damnation wouldn’t help his situation. He even tried to deny his sadness, and practically ran from his emotions, opting to distract himself instead. 

He was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard you call out his name. He loudly slammed his book shut, not even bothering to mark where he stopped at, then turned to your direction, coldly asking: “What do you want?”

Now, your relationship with Togami was strange. At least, from your perspective. He was self-centered, cold and difficult to talk to, but that’s part of the reason why he was so intriguing to you. You always tried to talk to him, even if he responded rudely to you every time. You noticed his very slight shift in nature when he interacted with you. He was still cold, yes, but it was almost toned down.

There was something about you that he found intriguing too. You always  had something to say to him, something to add, a comeback to an insult he may’ve thrown at you once or twice. He found you amusing, and certainly didn’t want to push you away.

You walked into the library, closing the door behind you, “I’m just here to check on you. You don’t have to be so sour about it.”

“I’m fine. Now leave, you’re distracting me.”, Byakuya tried to go back to his reading, planning to ignore you, but you proved that to be difficult by coming up to the desk, and sitting down on it.

Before Togami could tell you to move, you asked: “You doin’ ok? You seem sad.”

That... Took him aback. It was clear he didn’t expect your question.

He didn’t even know how to reply. Part of him wanted to talk to you, and the other just wanted to get you away from him. 

You hummed at his silence, then said, leaning over to rest your elbows on you knees, chin propped in your hands, “I can tell you how I’m feeling, if that would make you wanna talk about it.”

Byakuya sighed, “Fine, because I know you’ll keep bothering me about it if I don’t listen to you.”

You made him promise to talk about his own feelings btw it was an incredibly long, annoying and difficult process and he actually tried to leave the room several times but yOU CONVINCED HIM AND YOU DID IT GOOD JOB

Byakuya's superiority complex really said "no❤️"

And so, you rambled for a while. About how you felt, what you missed, what you wanted to do, and he listened. He may've looked somewhat disinterested, but it was far from that. He wanted to hear you, he was just too proud to fully admit it.

But when it was his turn to talk, he hesitated. He hesitated a lot, actually, and you had to convince him to speak all over again.

And he did! Of course, adding a lot of "I suppose"s and "maybe"s/"possibly"s to his sentences to distance himself from his emotions. He didn't tell you everything, but he did say a majority of his feelings. And... He really felt better.

Subconsciously, you went to pat the top of his head, telling him you're proud that he opened up to you.

Then you realized what you did.

"Oh, sorry! I probably shouldn't-"

As you went to pull your hand away, Togami quickly snatched your wrist, and put your hand back on his head, saying: "This- stays between us, understand?"

You smiled, seeing his rose-tinted cheeks, as your ran your hand through his hair absentmindedly.

As he went back to his reading, you two sat together in a comfortable silence, and a ghost of a grin appeared on his face.

... He could get used to this.

Okay, this one is going to be long, because I feel the need to overshare. In 2018, a person I know and his friends played a ""harmless"" prank on me , and I ended up drowning quite deep. You know those dramatic movies where everything looks slow-mo? Yeah, that's how it felt like. Anyhow, I got out somehow and a kind stranger pulled me up so I was pretty away from water. I always found that prank weird because they took away everyone including life guards, distracted my buddy, barricaded all the shallow areas, but maybe it was simply harmless.

I didn't swim since then, and I was planning to get over my fear this year, but well, 2020 happened.

But having experienced that, when I die of age 2357754367 years, I'd like to die by drowning. I really really do.

If not, an assassination will do. Just make sure it's for a good cause.

Who doesn’t love bread fresh and hot straight from the oven?… It never lasts long here which means not so much waste … which is always a good thing…isn’t it?

Covid-19 has meant for many like me that they have honed their bread baking and cake making skills which is great…

As it is Homemade Bread Day today I have gathered some of my tried and tested recipes together for you…I hope you enjoy it!

My first recipe is for Pretzel Bread which was a first for me as the method is one I hadn’t tackled before and it came out really well and was a great hit with everyone…

Pretzel Bread.

All I knew about pretzel dough was that like beigels the dough was boiled before baking and this gives it that characteristic deep brown crust and pretzel taste…

It was lovely a little sweet my tester said it tasted like currant bread sweetness not horrible he liked it and the salt was a foil for that methinks but with some ham and mustard in a sandwich it went down a treat…

I have however tweaked the original recipe and would use less sugar…1 tbsp instead of 3 tbsp.

Ingredients:

2 and a quarter tsp of instant yeast.

1 cup of lukewarm water

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp milk…I used full-fat milk

4 tbsp (2 oz) melted butter

1 tsp sea salt

3 cups of all-purpose unbleached flour

Baking Soda Bath:

4 quarts(8 pints) water

Half cup Baking Soda

Pretzel Topping:

2 tbsp butter melted

Coarse salt for topping.

A lined baking tray.

Preheated oven 200 degrees

Let’s bake!

Combine your yeast, water, and brown sugar in a bowl and stir to dissolve sugar.

Melt the butter and then add to the milk then stir into the yeast mixture to combine.

Add the salt and flour 1 cup at a time and stir to combine then once the dough has come together knead until it is a firm but slightly tacky dough. If you need to add more add a little at a time.

Put the dough into a greased bowl and cover with a cloth and allow to rise about an hour and it should have doubled in size.

Once the 60  mins are up put your 4 quarts of water in a large pan and bring to the boil then add your Baking Soda…DO NOT ADD IT ALL AT ONCE OR IT WILL ALLL FIZZ OVER …add a little at a time I added it a tsp at a time.

Then punch your dough down to remove the gas and divide it into two portions…Add one portion to the boiling water and turn after 60 seconds and give it 60 seconds on the other side remove with a slotted spoon to drain and make a small cross in the middle and sprinkle with salt. Put on a lined baking tin…

Repeat with your second piece of dough…When cutting the cross I made mine too big as this dough once boiled is easier than a normal risen dough to cut through.

Boiled Pretzel Dough

Sit both pieces of prepared dough on a lined baking tray and put it into your preheated oven…200 degrees.

Cook for 23-25 mins turning the tray around halfway through the cooking…

I was quite amazed at how it coloured up and just looked the colour of a pretzel that lovely deep brown…

Pretzel Bread

When you remove it from the oven brush with the melted butter and enjoy it!

My second recipe is for some lovely finger rolls again a first with a process I hadn’t used before…

Finger Rolls

Round Rolls

This is a lovely easy recipe and I sometimes make finger rolls or round rolls depending on how I feel or what I am cooking they make lovely hot dog rolls.

Although my images show white and use white unbleached flour I do sometimes mix the flour with wholemeal or go the whole hog hubby is getting to like wholewheat bread so now I have stocked up today on my flours the next loaf will not be white…

Let’s Cook! Bread!

  Ingredients:

5 cups of flour. I used unbleached, Bread flour.

2 tbsp of instant yeast

2 tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

2 cups of warm water

1/4 cup of cooking oil. I used Olive oil.

This is so quick and easy.

Add 4 cups of flour with all the other ingredients and mix to combine…just get your hands in there it’s the best way.

It will be sticky but hey ho we are bread making.

Gradually knead in the last cup of flour and knead that dough for 5 minutes.

Put it in a bowl and cover with a damp cloth and leave to prove for 30 minutes(for) me but it is warm here it may be a tad longer for you.

It should double its size, punch it down and divide into two or as I will next time make one large loaf.

Shape both pieces to fit into your oiled bread tins and leave to rise until dough reaches the top of the tin approx 20/30 mins.

Bake at 440F/ 200 C for approx 40 minutes.

Allow the bread to cool slightly then remove from the tin and put on a cooling rack you now have two lovely loaves of fresh bread.

If the crust is too hard then cover with a clean, damp tea towel to soften.

Not all bread contains yeast like this lovely ...Buttermilk Bread…

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups of lukewarm water.

1 cup of Buttermilk.

1 tbsp quick yeast.

1 tbsp salt

1 tbsp sugar

6 1/2 cups of unbleached bread flour.

Let’s Bake!

Mix water, buttermilk, yeast, salt, sugar in a bowl. Add the flour. No need to knead..lol

Just combine all the ingredients together..lightly cover the bowl and leave to rest/rise for 2 hrs.

The bonus of living here is dough rises quickly...I love using yeast now.

You can use the dough immediately, store covered in the fridge for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.

If you are using now preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Dust the dough with flour and very lightly knead, shape into a round. Cover and rest for 90 minutes.

Oh, and I made a cut into the top of my dough just like a cross.

Bake in the middle of the oven for approx 40 minutes until golden brown and delicious.

Remove from the oven and brush the top with melted butter.

Leave to cool before slicing.

Enjoy!

Flat Bread:

Flatbreads

1/2 cup water.

1/4 cup of milk

2 cups flour.

1 tbsp Baking Powder.

2 tbsp oil

1/2 tsp salt.

To make flatbreads.

Sift dry ingredients together. Add liquids and mix thoroughly…I used my food processor and it took literally 2 mins…. if that and formed a ball. If it is too sticky add little more flour. Divide into 8 pieces. Flatten with the heel of the hand and roll out very thin.

My first attempt at this and I didn’t roll mine out thin enough to start with practice makes perfect with all bread but I have never had any which is inedible just maybe a funny shape…lol

Heat pan and cook 2/3 minutes each side turn over with tongs or fish slice and done… finito..ready to fill…easy peasy.

My last bread recipe today is Crock Pot or Dutch Oven Bread…This loaf was cooked in a dutch oven and I was pleasantly surprised how much the crust was like ones I have purchased in bakeries.

Probably from the steam produced using the dutch oven method…

Ingredients:

4 cups of unbleached all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp salt

 2 1/4 tsp of rapid yeast

2 cups of lukewarm water

1 tsp of olive oil.

Let’s Bake!

In a large bowl add the flour and salt whisk to combine.

Make a well and add the raid yeast granules and the lukewarm water then with wet hands bring the mix together. If it is too sticky add a little more flour and likewise if too dry add a little more water a tsp at a time…This will vary as it depends on the flour used.

Cover and leave in a warm spot to double in size again this depends on the temperature where you live it can be anything from a 1hr to 1 1/2 hours…if it is very warm mine takes a little less time.

Once risen using your hand or a dough scraper work the dough loose from the sides and working around the edge bring the sides to the middle.

Cover and leave to double in size again about 1 hour it rises slightly quicker this time.

Once risen transfer to a lightly floured surface sprinkle the top with a little flour and shape and fold the dough under itself several times then pinch the seams together. Coat your bowl with the olive oil and put the dough in the bowl cover and leave the dough to rise once again.

Then put on the oven and set the heat at 230C/450F and put your dutch oven into the oven to heat up for 45-1n hr. By the time this has heated your dough should have risen.

NOW VERY CAREFULLY REMOVE THE HOT DUTCH OVEN ONTO A TRIVETT…It is hot then turn out your dough onto a lightly floured surface and carefully put in the dutch oven.

Put the pot back into the oven and cook for 45 minutes then carefully remove the lid and cook for a further 15-30 minutes …

Remove from the oven and cover with a cloth to cool for about 15 mins before slicing and enjoy…That’s all for today …Happy Bread making..xx

The Keeper of the Grove (Part 33)

At Weiss' insistence, Ruby carried her all the way back to her hammock for a nap.

“But you're still all muddy and sweaty!” Ruby said.

“Don't care, too tired,” Weiss muttered back.

She slept till the middle of the afternoon, woke up famished and sore. Thankfully, Penny was already back by that time, and her “Mender Protocols” included physical therapy.

“How long is this going to take?” Weiss asked as Penny helped turn her over face down in her hammock.

“No more than a few seconds at the worst!” Penny chirped.

Weiss frowned. “What exactly are you going to do?”

“Almost exactly like you humans do in your hospitals: irradiate you with specially charged magic, in this case for stimulating your sore muscle groups,” Penny explained as she held up her hands, already glowing with a lighter shade of the green energy that held them together.

“This isn't going to hurt, is it...?” Weiss asked.

“Possibly, but nothing worse than a tingle!” Penny said, said as she placed her hands on Weiss' back.

Weiss closed her eyes and preemptively cringed.

The energy in Penny's hands discharged, traveling up and down Weiss body like ripples on a pond. Her muscles did tingle, but not any different than what a vibrating massage module would do, and leaving a pleasant warmth afterward, too.

Weiss opened her eyes, blinking in surprise.

“On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your pain?” Penny asked as she took her hands back.

“Zero!” Weiss asked as she climbed out of her hammock, completely free of soreness. “I feel completely fine!” she said as she stretched and moved about. “Better than fine, even!”

Penny smiled. “Response logged.”

Weiss stomach growled—loudly and angrily, from having missed both breakfast and lunch—and the two of them left for the kitchen. To Weiss' dismay, it'd have to be cookies and milk yet again as all the boar meat was reserved as a buffer for all the predators in the house.

“Where is everyone, anyway?” Weiss asked as they walked in the quiet halls.

“Busy with their duties, or otherwise enjoying themselves at the Bastion,” Penny replied as they entered the kitchen. “Fae generally prefer to spend their free time outside of their own homes and interacting with the community at large; even the most sedentary folks who prefer to spend their time indoors come out at least once a week, and attend most if not all major celebrations and events.

“It's just one of the many aspects of Fae culture you'll be learning about during your education!” she continued as she fetched a plate and went off to the cookie jar.

“My education?” Weiss asked as she headed to the fridge.

“Elder Goodwitch has recently authorized myself to be your tutor in all twelve years of basic education, and my protocols have been updated accordingly,” Penny said as she climbed the ladder. “I will be administering a test later, to properly design a curriculum for you.”

“Got it,” Weiss said as she opened the fridge to fetch the milk.

She noticed that Blake's tuna sashimi was right beside the jug, carefully encased in cling wrap, with a little sticky note on it. It had a crudely drawn picture of Weiss' face on it with a giant X over it. She scowled, and reached for it.

Her grandfather's voice echoed in her head, a line from one of his many video interviews: “Pissing someone off out of spite is about the worst investment you can make; very short-term gain for long-term pain.”

Her hand strayed back to the jug, Weiss pulled it out and shut the door. “She caught it, she can decide who gets it,” she thought to herself as she sat down at the table.

Weiss' life quickly settled into a routine:

Mornings, she'd do farm work, tending to her crops, hacking back a little bit more of the overgrowth to clear space for more plants in the future. She was careful not to exert herself too much as there would be more exercise in the afternoon—weight lifting, running, and even weapons training with all the many varieties of armaments the Fae produced.

Weiss dubiously held up a blade whose hilt could shoot out, connected by a razor wire and an automatic reel system. “How does someone even use this?” she asked, touching the wire and flinching as she cut herself almost immediately afterward.

“Very carefully!” Ruby replied. “If you're fast, have great reflexes, and get up high places easy like Blake, a Breakneck's a great weapon to use!”

“I'm going to regret this, but why's it called a Breakneck?”

“Because we use it a lot for catching fast prey like chickens,” Ruby replied. “You just piss them off with a repeater or a crossbow, run through some trees, tie the wire taught between them, and make them run straight into the wire. Run around so the weighted end loops around their neck, and pull the switch.”

She mimed tugging an invisible rope, and violently jerked her head to the side. “Violin! Roast chicken for everyone. Sometimes you can cut the head clean off and save a whole lot of prep-time!”

Weiss turned green and slowly put the Breakneck down. “I think I'll just leave this to Blake...”

After cooling down with the Fae's version of yoga and meditation, she'd spent the rest of the day studying with Penny. It was mostly focused on learning Actaeon and how Fae society worked, as math, economics, science, and so on were essentially the same as humans.

About the only thing she had a problem with was her learning materials:

“Are these children's books?” Weiss asked as she held up worn, much-loved physical copies of simple, colourful books—some of them with Ruby's name scrawled inside, most of them with her many ancestors'.

“They are,” Penny replied. “The Chroniclers recommended that we use these, as they are both designed to help total beginners learn the language, and contain simplified versions of a lot of the cultural concepts and history that you will be learning later.”

Weiss sighed. “Can't argue with that… what do we start with?”

“This one!” Penny said, holding up a book with the cartoon of a generic-looking Fae on it. “The title translates to 'I Am Fae,' though I recommend you read it all out loud in Actaeon to help you with you with your pronunciation.”

She opened it and laid it down before Weiss. “Now, repeat after me...”

They repeated it several times; Weiss struggled to speak it properly, as Actaeon sounded like animal growls and noises, not sounds that humans made normally, to say the least.

“So this is basically Fae religion?” Weiss asked as they took a break.

“It's actually much closer to a constitution or a guiding philosophy,” Penny replied. “Religion is a belief in a higher power or powers, and the effects of Avalon are very real and easily proven, no faith necessary.”

“How so?” Weiss asked.

Penny smiled. “That'd be for a much later lesson. For now, let's start with the basics...”

The days in-between training were followed by even more education, though this time in practical skills.

“Though most Fae tend to have one specialized role as their main career, it's not unusual for them to have a second job to complement the first or serve as a back-up, such as Watchers also working as Makers to maintain their own equipment and serve as insurance should they be crippled or otherwise rendered unfit for duty,” Penny explained. “Some even switch careers several times over the course of their lives, following personal interest or necessity.”

Ruby helped teach her how to maintain her tools, and construct a fence for her garden, using the wood and materials from the overgrowth she'd already cleared. With the help of the Codex and supplies permitting, Penny guided her in making common home remedies and useful products, like “multi-paste,” an incredibly powerful and sticky adhesive that had a nearly limitless amount of uses, from patching up walls, repairing clothes, and even serving as a durable temporary fix to a broken weapon until you could find a more permanent solution. And though Blake was unwilling to teach her how to sew and work leather, Qrow was teaching her how to cook and butcher meat, though Weiss had her reservations as he insisted on doing both only while he was sufficiently drunk.

“I'll have you know I do my best cooking while I'm wasted!” Qrow said as he reheated some stew over the stove, one hand on a wooden spoon, the other holding his flask of “jungle juice.” “Granted, I've also done my worst while I was wasted, but I hit more than I miss!”

Weiss groaned as she cut some carrots to throw in. “Qrow, we're both going to be handling sharp objects, fire, and things that might be both sharp and flammable, I'll learn a LOT better and faster if I know you'll be completely sober if something goes wrong! Or at least MOSTLY sober...”

Qrow groaned as he lifted the spoon out. “Princess, I have done way harder things in much more dangerous conditions while I was even more drunk than I usually am—I've got the footage from my Chronicle to prove it, too!”

“Good for you, but my point still stands!” Weiss said as she slid the carrots into the pot.

Qrow sighed. “Fine. But I decide what we cook, alright?”

“Deal.”

As it turned out, it would be sweet potato fries, as “Nothing tastes better when you're completely fucked up at 3 AM than some nice, greasy sweet potato fries!”

Weiss couldn't match Qrow in precision or knife work, but frying them was easy, and only some of them got burnt. No one really minded the extra crunch, though, especially Zwei who had been kept on hand in case everything went horribly, horribly wrong.

“Man, I really should have fried up some fish or grilled hamburgers for this, these are pretty good!” Qrow said as he ate them. “A lot cheaper than what the fast food joints around here charge, too.”

“Yeah, Weiss, looks like the farming life might really be for you after all!” Ruby said through the fistful of fries she had shoved into her mouth.

Weiss smiled. “Thanks,” she said as she picked up the last plate of fries.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Blake looking in from the doorway, her nose twitching, her expression conflicted.

Weiss frowned, a memory of the now long-gone sashimi and the sticky note flashing through her mind.

Then, her grandfather's voice echoed through her head again, the second part of that quote: “Extending the olive branch to someone you hate, though? Much better choice.”

She walked up to her. Blake looked ready to bolt, before Weiss held up her plate and smiled

Blake looked worriedly at her, caught between the delicious aroma of the sweet potato fries, and who was offering them. In the end, the allure of greasy, hot snacks won out and she carefully picked up one of the smaller wedges.

Blake nibbled on it daintily, her expression brightened. “Is good!” she said in Nivian, struggling with the words.

“Get 'em while they last!” Weiss said, inviting her in.

<Thanks,> Blake replied as she did, a smile on her face now too.

A week later, and thanks to Elder Goodwitch's surprisingly enthusiastic support for Weiss' gardening, she'd expanded her crops to include more vegetables like tomatoes, green peas, and even some herbs for medical and cooking purposes.

Unfortunately, the local wildlife had taken notice, and though insects were foiled easily enough by planting a protective row of pest control plants, the birds were still a problem. Ruby had built a very basic scarecrow out of wood and weeds, even drew an angry face on it, but the animals weren't the least bit fooled or intimidated.

“We need to make him look scarier!” Weiss said. “Do you have any clothes we could use?”

Ruby shook her head. “Sorry, Weiss, clothes are expensive here because we make them to last; we don't throw them away soon as they stop being fashionable, we just take them to a maker and have them changed up.”

Weiss sighed. “Do you have anything we can use, then?”

“I think we can use some of Zwei's old blankets, but I don't think the birds will be scared by this guy wearing a sheet,” Ruby said, gesturing at her skeletal creation.

“We're going to need to hire a maker for this, then...” Weiss said as she headed back inside, shooting a glare at the birds eying her crops from the trees.

Penny was sent to stand out and shoo the birds while Weiss and Ruby scavenged some materials, and began to search for a tailor they could hire on their limited budget.

As she headed back from the bathroom, Blake noticed the naked scarecrow outside, the pile of old blankets and popped buttons on the living room floor, and Ruby and Weiss busy with a comm-crystal, clearly looking through the magical version of the Job Board.

She quietly stole some of the them, and took them back to her room.

Later, Weiss closed her comm-crystal in frustration. “Ugh! This is impossible! Isn't there ANY maker willing to do a job on the cheap?”

“It's highly doubtful,” Penny said as she walked up. “A Makers' products are their living, their pride, and their reputation; if word gets around they did a lackluster job just to make a handful of easy Shinies, there will be serious monetary, societal, and personal costs.”

Weiss sighed. “Never have I thought I would ever regret someone putting quality over profit...” she stopped. “Wait, Penny, what are you doing here? Weren't you watching my crops?!” she asked as she scrambled up.

“I was, but Blake took care of that problem!” Penny smiled. “Look out the window.”

Weiss and Ruby did.

Standing guard over her crops was a scarecrow styled after Jacques Schnee, wearing a white jacket complete with buttons and a red handkerchief in the breast pocket, his arms stiffly held by his sides, his bushy eyebrows and mustache making him look very, very angry indeed.

It wasn't the finest craftsmanship, but it scared the birds, which was what mattered.

Weiss and Ruby turned away from the window as they heard the elevator coming back up.

Blake waved and smiled as she walked on past, her pouch full of sewing tools under her arm.

I cannot stay silent

I opened my tumblr feed today to find something that I am heartbroken and appalled to see. How could things have gotten so far off track so fast? How have we let so much hate fill our lives? Do I believe that the media is biased? Absolutely. But does that negate what I am seeing? No. I am not easily offended into action, but this has me so concerned that it brings me to tears. I want to point out some things. I never intended to reveal this much about my personal beliefs in the electronic world, because there is so much hate waiting to come out, but I feel the need to speak. Just like it feels that our government is labeling everyone who is Muslim as potential terrorists, it is easy for us to pigeon hole everyone who claims a certain belief system, nationality, race, etc, and to not listen to the truth of their words. Let me be clear as I go into this. I am not anti-Christian. I consider myself a Christian. And to all those who join in my claim to be Christian out there, this is reminder for you as well. 

Romans 3:23 (NIV)

In what I am assuming was an attempt to prevent ‘anti-US’ terrorists from entering the country, President Trump signed into being a piece of legislation that scares me. And if this statement is in truth, then I am doubly concerned:

“Trump said the goal is to screen out “radical Islamic terrorists” and to give priority for admission to Christians. .....

In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network earlier Friday, Trump was asked whether he would prioritize persecuted Christians in the Middle East for admission as refugees, and he replied, “Yes.”

“They’ve been horribly treated,” he said. “Do you know if you were a Christian in Syria it was impossible, at least very tough, to get into the United States? If you were a Muslim you could come in, but if you were a Christian it was almost impossible. And the reason that was so unfair — everybody was persecuted, in all fairness — but they were chopping off the heads of everybody, but more so the Christians. And I thought it was very, very unfair.”

It may be a noble goal to give preference to those who are persecuted, but it can be a slippery slope. Let’s start with my first concern: religious preference. There is a blanket ban on entry to people from specific countries, even those who already have their paperwork in order to enter the country. The fact that these are highly Muslim countries, and that priority is being considered for Christians? I give you the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition.  It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices.  It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely.  It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government.  

Now I am doing a lot of copying and pasting here, because it is important that I am not skewing this to my personal opinions. I understand that these people are not yet citizens of the United States. I understand that there are threats and that we need to evaluate those who want to come into our country. But to openly admit preference of one religion over another? To make it clear that there is a bias towards one religion when making decisions? Especially when we have already given them permission to be here? This flies in the face of the engravers of the Constitution! THIS WAS THEIR FIRST AMENDMENT!! The fact that this was the FIRST thing that came up indicates how important these men felt it was that the government needed to STAY OUT of religion! I often hear separation of church and state argued from the opposite perspective: that the church should keep their beliefs and fingers out of the government. But that isn’t what is written in the constitution. What is written is that the GOVERNMENT needs to keep their grubby hands out of a person’s religious beliefs. It is essentially NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. Is the safety of the nation their business? Absolutely. Are their sects within the Islamic religion that want to see us destroyed? Definitely. But just as those extremists do not represent the entirety of the Islamic faith, the same can be said for every other religion, including Christianity.

I do not want what Trump is doing to be considered reflective of what I believe to be Christian ideals and beliefs because I believe this is so far from what it means to be a Christian, and I am appalled! The same can be said for all of the other racist and bigoted actions being claimed in the name of Christianity. It flies in the face of what is written in the bible and words spoken by Jesus himself!

Mark 12:28-35 (NIV)

The Greatest Commandment

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[b] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c]There is no commandment greater than these.”

For all those who claim to be Christian, Jesus summed up what he felt to be the point of all God’s Laws into two. And both of them start with love. This hate? That is NOT in line with Christian beliefs. I am not talking about anger, because I believe we have the right, and even the responsibility to be angry! It is what we do with that anger that is important. We fight for truth. We fight for what is right. We speak up for those who do not have a voice. We love. And then there is the second part: who is our neighbor? Jesus answers that question as well:

Is the G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series a Reliable Storage Option?

There comes a time in every working filmmakers life where at the end of the day, they have to dump all the footage they shot onto a couple hard drives for delivery and backup. Quite often, this happens on-location or in the field, which is one of the reasons so many people have tried to perfect their backup strategy. The perfect backup strategy isn’t an exact science though, and I’ve seen far too many people who are wrapped on set begin this process as if they were performing some sort of ritual. They’ll place their drives ever-so-gently into a pelican case, and then into another case, just praying that their process ensures a devastating jostle doesn’t occur in transit and ruin their transfer, or potentially corrupt their files. Usually, that means a transfer to one of the orange rugged drives from Lacie and then transferred to trusty G-Drives back at home base.

While those drives (and ones like it) are quite rugged, what if you wanted another option? What if you’ve got no room to spare in your bag and you’d rather have the peace of mind that your work is safe instead of hoping and praying nothing went wrong with your transfer or with the drives themselves? The G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series from G-Technology solves all of the aforementioned problems. As a Solid State Drive, there’s no needle to jostle, the speed far outpaces an HDD, and its’ size means you don’t need to make special space considerations when bringing it from here to there. That’s all well and good, but if we’re being honest, it’s not that hard to evaluate whether or not a drive works. The big thing I wanted to test was whether or not I could actually trust it to not corrupt my footage under pressure. So, after two weeks of filming between my Canon C100mkII and Sony X3000, I loaded all of that footage on to the drive and did a perfectly normal, middle-of-the-road durability test: I took it back-country snowboarding.

With no fanfare or padding, I chucked the drive into my Snoblast Camelback along with my phone, X3000, and two Moment cell phone lenses (all in the same compartment) and took to the slopes of Steamboat Colorado. Guarded from the elements only through a thin layer of ripstop, I took it from 6,900ft to somewhere around 10,000ft where the temperature difference was around 20°, dropping from 33° to 11°. 

That drive saw a relatively full day of riding with me taking laps up and down the mountain and around the Morningside run on the back-side between 9am and 3pm. I even went into a very warm mid-mountain lodge for lunch, a temperature and atmosphere difference which could be death for electronics. My beard was completely frozen. Throughout the day I crashed, sat in snow for a while and  even cracked a rib (I think, it might just be bruised). Through all of that, the little pocket-sized SSD was bouncing around the top compartment of my backpack among the other hard chunks of half-frozen metal and plastic I had in there. The test was on: would this drive be destroyed, or would it safely transfer the goods to my boss’ aforementioned “traditional” LaCie drive? Would there be water damage? Impact damage? Would it even boot up? Did I ruin a review copy of borrowed hardware? It worked flawlessly.

When loading the footage on to the drive from the SD cards, I used my boss’ mid-2014 15″ Macbook Pro running OS Sierra 10.12.6 with a 2.5GHz Intel i7 processor. It transferred the 129.56GB package via USB2 in 28min and 58sec. My computer at home is a custom built Windows PC running an Intel i7-7700K 4.20GHz processor. When transferring from the GDrive to my Media Drive (a 5TB Toshiba 7200 RPM SATA drive) via USB 3 it took 15min 50secs at a consistent speed of 125MB/s. When transferring to my SSD (my main one, a MyDigital 1TB BP5e 2.5″ SATA drive) it shaved off 5 minutes and clocked in at 10min 42sec. Interestingly, the SSD-to-SSD transfer rate fluctuated where the HDD transfer was rock solid, albeit slower.

  As you can see, it was almost twice as fast as the HDD download, fluctuating between around 350MB/s and 250ish. Definitely shy of their stated max rate of 560MB/s, but there are a ton of factors that go into transfer speeds. I’m sure if I uploaded the package from the SD cards to the GDrive using my PC and the USB3 ports, I would see a similar uptick. Overall, it was quite impressive considering how small and genuinely robust the drive is. I would happily chuck this thing into my pocket and go about my day with zero fear. Especially since I already did.

BONUS ROUND:

I got to thinking: what if you don’t have a laptop but need to get those files saved? How mobile is the Mobile SSD?

Well, if you have an Android phone and way too much time on your hands, you’re in luck! I do have to say though, this is overly-complicated and you’ll have to spend $4 on an app that has a horrible UX. That being said, it works. The problem lies in formatting: the Pixel XL (my phone) formats drives in FAT32 and my Canon C100mkII and Sony X3000 format in exFAT. You don’t need to know what that means, but the Pixel can’t read exFAT. Microsoft owns that format and it’s a long story. Moving on.

First, I bought a cheap $10 USB-C SD card reader with an extra USB port on the side. After that, and with some expert Googling, I found an app called Total Commander that has easily the worst user interface I’ve ever experienced, but maybe that’s just a raw Linux thing. In any case, it allows you to access and transfer files to exFAT drives after you pay them a modest $4. Licensing is fun, isn’t it? From there I plugged in the GDrive, the SD card, haphazardly discovered how to Copy/Paste between the two and voila, we had movement.

    Pretty cool right? I don’t know how useful that is to you, but it’s doable. If saving bag space is absolutely critical, then this would technically work. After all, a cellphone is just a small computer.

So, overall, how great is the G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series? In my book, it’s totally worth the price point at the 500MB and even 1TB mark. For $800, I might wait on the 2TB version. Now, this small of a drive probably only works from a practical sense for filmmakers still shooting in HD or for smaller single or two-day shoots, but that’s still a ton of us. For photographers it’s an easy choice.
