A rainbow shirt at Target won't turn your kids gay, but crash-landing on a desolate ice moon with your sworn enemy and being forced to huddle together for warmth while fending off attacks by giant alien monsters and reluctantly sharing heartfelt confessions will.

Star Wars OC - Nikolaj Kallus, Imperial Ace Pilot turned Defector and Alexsandr Kallus’s douchbag brother.
Tumblr media
“I'm sorry for your loss.” Draven muttered as he watched Kallus drink.
“I’m sorry for your gain.” Kallus sighed, gesturing to the two-way mirror that looked into the interrogation room. Nick was nonchalantly rocking back on his chair, and he started calling out for a beer or for something interesting to do in that smug entailed way of his. Draven swiftly muted the microphone.
“So, is he really your brother?” Draven asked and he couldn‘t hide the disappointment in his voice. Kallus nodded sadly and Draven muttered a curse under his breath. “Sorry, I know he’s family, he’s just-”
“He’s an asshole.” Kallus agreed, sneering at his brother through the mirror and wondering how he ended up in this situation.
“I don't know, war makes assholes of us all and-”
“But he’s a real asshole.” Kallus interrupted and Draven sighed in resignation.
“Yeah, he’s the worst. He’s xenophobic. He’s homophobic, and misogynistic. I mean...” Draven looked around, as if someone could possibly be listening to them here in the safety of the interrogation room console space and whispered. “We can just dump him on a trash planet if you like?”
“Tempting, but we need him.” Kallus sighed, and he was honestly surprised by how easy it would be to just abandon his brother. And how tempted by the idea he was. “He had a tattoo on his hand, a sign of elite pilots in the Empire. He knows too many inside secrets to just throw away.”
“So, we’re stuck with him.” Draven groaned resting his head on the two-way mirror in despair.
“At least you just have to work with him, he's my brother.” Kallus said, holding his head in his hands and sinking down in the broken old office chair in the room, not caring about the way it groaned and wheezed under his weight. “He’s my homophobic, xenophobic brother.”
“About that...” Draven said tentatively, looking at Kallus with a nervous trepidation that Kallus had never seen on the man before. “You know I don't like to pry in the private lives of my team, if anything I take great pride in the fact I haven't even learned half your names but, I am curious about how you’ll explain that furry purple boyfriend of yours to him?”

A little comparison of Lieutenant Lyste's voice in the English and German dub (+ a little bit of Kallus too); because I find languages interesting and this made me really think about how a voice actor can influence how a character is perceived.
First of all, I've watched Rebels primarily in German so far (though I've seen a good amount of scenes in English as well), partly for nostalgia reasons (I was in my teens, probably around 14 when I first watched the series and my English wasn't that good at the time to just casually watch an entire series, plus I was watching it with my younger sister), but also because I think the voice actors especially for the main and recurring characters are genuinely doing a really good job. Heck, for some characters I might actually prefer their German voice because it is that good! Kallus might actually be a good example for this if he's already here, I think he has such a pleasant roughness in his voice. For Thrawn it's also a pretty close match, he sounds wonderful in both variants but I might prefer his German voice just by a teeny tiny bit.
Who I actually wanted to talk about is Lieutenant Lyste though. I'm mainly familiar with his German voice, and as he's a fictional crush of mine, this is also the voice of his that I've fallen in love with. When I imagine him talking - regardless in which language - the sound is that of his German voice. Personally, I feel like that voice makes him seem a little younger and more naive compared to his English voice. I've always headcanoned him to be fairly young, in his early to mid twenties, and that by the start of the series he had just completed his military training recently (his position as supply master might have been the first one where he had to bear more responsibility). I've always seen him as a guy who's motivated and just trying his best, but at the same time he's lacking experience, plus, if we're being honest, when it comes to his military career he's a pretty average guy. I think he'd learn and improve over the years, but he isn't the "best of his academy year" or "promising young talent with innovative ideas" kind of guy, and he's far from a mastermind like Thrawn. He's literally Just A Guy, and personally, that's actually something I really like about him and that makes him endearing to me.
In contrast, I think his voice in the English dub makes his age a bit more ambiguous (I still wouldn't guess him older than 30, also based on his appearance but I feel he seems less "boyish" than in the German dub). I think it also gives him a bit more of an arrogant tinge and less of the playfulness that at least I hear in his German voice. He still conveys that dutifulness, but he seems a bit more uptight as well. I wouldn't go so far to say that that's bad, and I still like his English voice as well, but I think for me it won't come close to the charm that his German voice has to me.
Towards the end I want to point out though, that the voice, while being an important aspect, is not everything that makes a character. Appearance, behaviour, body language, actions and decisions contribute to that as well. What I found interesting is that most headcanons that I read about Lyste actually still overlap closely with my own as well, even though I heavily assume that not all people who wrote them are familiar with his German voice. I would say that this is a good thing, because his core personality is still conveyed across language barriers, even though the way that different actors voice him may emphasise different aspects of his character more or less.

I don't love Alexsandr Kallus because he's some precious, perfect paragon of a man; that's not what he is. I love Alexsandr Kallus because he was absolutely horrible and he changed. He made amends. He uprooted literally his entire life out of remorse for what he'd done in the past and determination to do better in the future. He sacrificed everything he'd ever built because it was built on the pain and death of others and he didn't want that to be the sum of his life anymore. He went into a future where all he knew he could expect was to be hunted because he was once the hunter and he wanted to make up for it. He opened his damn eyes and he looked at what he'd done and he said this isn't right, I'm going to be different from now on if it kills me. I love Alexsandr Kallus because he changed.

thinking about alexsander kallus who starts off being a passionate servant to the empire and proud destroyer of lasan who has a strong mutual hatred for zeb
alexsander kallus who never really sat well with the massacre on lasan after it happened, because it was never supposed to happen that way, who starts to question things after being trapped on bahryn with zeb, who actually gets to talk with his enemy and come to a shaky, shaky truce
alexsander kallus who helps sabine escape even before he's officially fulcrum, just because he knows he owes zeb, and he knows how important sabine is to him
alexsander kallus who becomes fulcrum because he knows it's the right thing to do, because he knows that the events on lasan have happened to so many other planets, and he realizes how wrong he was, and how he's been changed
"heart of a rebel" alexsander kallus who fights against thrawn and manages to escape and becomes an unofficial spector as he gets folded into the rebels
alexsander kallus who, after feeling guilty and twisted for so long because of the lasan massacre, who has atoned for so many mistakes, who has struggled for so long to find his place, is shown to the planet where the lasat people are thriving, who is welcomed into their home, forgiven and seen as one of them
just... alexsander kallus
