One of the fun bits of In the Company of Witches and Slayers as an AU:

The show essentially sets up that much of Sunnydale's coverups of obviously supernatural shenanigans was a Mayoral conspiracy and then the immortal with the demon pacts who kept all that together dies and this seemingly has no impact on Sunnydale's awareness of supernatural events. Well here, starting with Willow's brief first Dark Willow moment of summoning a category 5 stormcloud over Sunnydale and on through this the censorship field wavers and finally disintegrates in Sunnydale, though its overall factor as a price of the Shadowmen's original spell makes it to Season 7.

This means that just in time for the Initiative and Adam to finally move to center stage in the 2001 timeframe (and as they've been background villains for a while the reign of terror is actually fairly short and ends well before the start of 2002) that Sunnydale's capacity to see and sense the supernatural suddenly and abruptly changes and it realizes it's got vampires, demons, werewolves, witches, and Slayers running around.

And then becomes Metropolis from DC comics but vampires.

"What the fuck, man! That tiny blonde was kicking the shit out of some Andre the Giant with horns!"

"Oh it's just the blonde Slayer. You should see what the brunette does. If it wasn't for the idea that vampires would kill me I'd support a vampire rights thing."

"Wait, I thought witches needed broomsticks to fly."

"Evidently not."

Fic or Treat!

Or, damn, there really aren’t a lot of fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving seasonal TAZ fics, huh?

Right, but in all seriousness, I wanted to create a TAZ fic rec list for the fall/Halloween season. Per my aforementioned point, some of these are not strictly speaking related to either of those things, but fit in a more tangential spooky/eerie/supernatural way. But these are all authors I’ve read things from and whose writing I enjoy, so I hope you do to. As always, mind the tags, and kudos and comment to support these folks!

So, without further ado, in no particular order (I am literally rolling a d10 for that):

1. The Robots of Maureen Miller by AlwaysAmused ( @simplyaskeleton )

A little goofy, a little angsty, a whole lot of accidental robot murdery. Featuring disaster scientist Maureen Miller and a battalion of equally disastrous robots. What could go wrong? Really, Baines, what could possibly go wrong? Baines? BAINES? I guess you’re just going to have to read this good good fic and find out!

2. dancing in a swirl of golden memories by everqueen ( @everqueen12 )

So you’re on my page, so I’m assuming you like TAZ. Also a fan of Over the Garden Wall? Here’s Kat’s OTGW AU fic for a Taakitz week of old. If you’re not familiar with Kat’s work, this is one unknown I’ll yeet you into myself, because Kat is a delightful author. A is for awesome which is what Kat is, B is for boys lost in the woods, C is for comments are the best, and D is for dear God I don’t know how to end this bit!

3. Rest for the Wicked by BoPeepWithNoSheep (@thisiswhyidonthaveatumblr)

This is one of the ones that is really not fully on with the Halloween theme, but Bo can write the creepy and the unsettling so delightfully well that... well, my list, my rules. So there. It’s good fic! A particularly creepy look at what happens when a new antagonist pops up after the world has been saved and they have a little too much interest in Lucretia. Hm. HM. (Mind the tags!)

4. Draw Me Forth from the Otherside by TaraHarkon

1880s post-Civil War spiritualism and seances with Barry, Lup, Taako, and more? YES. As it’s Tara, you can of course expect that more to include the Wonderland twins. Ghosts and spookiness abound, and as always, Tara is an excellent writer.

5. The Clone in the Back Room by M_Logolepsy (@lonelyjournal-keeper)

So who was left with questions about Garfield growing a Magnus body? Who DIDN’T want those questions answered? Great! Enjoy Mads’s fic about Garfield through the Balance arc, where she absolutely fucking nails just how unnerving all that is and makes you laugh while doing it!

6. A Chill Wind Blowing by DragonWrites

Jen herself calls this one a ghost story, so fair game for this list. What happens when the crew of the Starblaster dies during the century? Is our dear Captain really haunting Barry’s denim-clad ass? How is Jen still the best Davenport writer out there even when she kills him? HA! Like I’m spoiling this good good fic for you!

7. Not Your Usual Round... by Jairephix

Definitely the shortest fic on the list, but Briar setting Wonderland and Haunted Doll Watch on a collision course made me cackle with laughter. Absolutely nails the sibling energy.

8. (I Put a Spell on You) And Now You’re Mine by ceilingfan5 (@ceilingfan5)

Chances are you’ve seen some of Larissa’s shorter work floating around the taz fic tumblr world, and I am here to assure you that her work is always that good! Hello fluffy Halloween Taakitz goodness - this is probably sweeter than  the whole of that Orange Creme Halloween Oreo display in the Fantasy Target!

9. In This Town (We Call Home) by Hoothootmotherf_ckers (@hoothootmotherf-ckers)

Didn’t ship Ren and Noelle before well guess what now you do because of this good good sweet fluffy Halloween filled fic featuring girlfriends Ren and Noelle celebrating their favorite holiday. This fic has the feel of eating candy while cozy under a blanket on the couch watching a Halloween movie while you’ve got a cinnamon pumpkin candle burning and I love it so much.

10. stepping back to golden days by Hoothootmotherf_ckers

Another fall fic from Shell, this one focuses on Magnus and Lucretia and their good good sibling energy and also just absolutely fucking oneshot my bisexual ass with the image of both Magnus and Lucretia in flannel shirts with rolled up sleeves. It’s so very fluffy and you get to run around and see all your favorite characters happy and enjoying nifty fall activities and this one is like wearing that flannel shirt out to go pick a pumpkin and eating local caramel apples and popcorn.

It's 2021, and I'm watching Buffy for the first time.

The Virgil on my Buffy journey is my long-distance girlfriend, who has loved the show for years. We just finished season 4, and I wanted to write about my favorite episodes so far. I suspect some of my faves are beloved by most fans, but others are weird, personal picks. Buffy fandom, please don't come for me.

I thought this post would be short but I was wrong.

Hono(u)rable Mentions: "Band Candy" S3E6 and "Halloween" S2E6

Both these episodes have fun premises where the Scoobies run around Sunnydale after it was upended by zany, chaotic dark forces. "Band Candy" is fun for devil-may-care teen Giles. "Halloween" is fun for 18th-century-ditz Buffy. These are both very good, and are the sorts of episode I can imagine happily rewatching in the future. I just have more to pontificate upon for the other episodes on this list.

10. "Ted" S2E11

I can’t say I enjoyed this episode, but it did take me for a wild ride. Probably nobody else has strong feelings about this weird story where Buffy's mom dates a stereotypical cheesy family man, who turns out to be a controlling abuser, who turns out to be a robot. I remember shouting at the screen, "Did Buffy just kill a human man?? Is it okay in the moral logic of this show for Buffy to kill a human if he's a direct physical threat to her??" I knew Buffy would have deeper stories than the monster of the week formula we'd seen so far, but this early in season 2, I had no idea when or how that would happen. This was the episode that finally taught me that Buffy is largely not interested in moral ambiguity, or in exploring what it means to be good or bad. Except for season-defining exceptions like Faith and Angel, evil characters are simplistically, essentially evil. But it was wild to believe for a moment that Buffy murdered her mom's abusive boyfriend and would have to live with the consequences.

9. "Helpless" S3E12

When Buffy tries to be genuinely scary, it succeeds with aplomb. The premise of this episode is dumb and contrived ("Giles has to remove Buffy's powers without her knowledge for a seeeecret test by the Watcher's Council") but the chase and fight in this episode are some of the most tense and spooky scenes of the whole series so far. Buffy's vulnerability makes the stakes feel real in a way few other episodes manage. And Buffy's victory is all the more satisfying because she can't punch her way out of this problem, she has to be smart and creative. The fridge horror, of course, is that Giles would endanger her like this in the first place, but that gets sorted out over the emotional arc of the next few episodes.

8. "I Only Have Eyes For You." S2E19

Another spooky episode, this one a classic ghost story of forbidden love ending in murder - but with the twist that the ghosts possess people's bodies to have them reenact their final moments. I love stories about breaking a doomed-to-repeat cycle. I love weird shit like the snakes manifesting in the cafeteria. And I really loved the choice to have Buffy and Angel come to understand their feelings about their own relationship by embodying these ghosts - especially how they embodied different genders than their own to better fit the "roles" of the haunting story, thus subverting the expected pattern. I found this episode clever, poignant, and effective.

7. "Who Are You?" S4E16

"Faith and Buffy switch bodies" is a wild premise, but the real joy of "Who Are You?" is watching Sarah Michelle Geller being an extremely talented actress for 45 minutes, portraying a totally different character. Watching Faith confronted by kindness and love from Buffy's mom, Riley, and her friends, then getting launched into an existential crisis over it is so great. Also, I just dig a good church fight.

6. "Hush" S4E10

As stated above, love an episode that reminds me that these people are talented actors! Featuring demons that render all of Sunnydale unable to talk, we get to watch great physical comedy right next to tense, silent fight scenes. The visual creepiness of the Gentleman and their straight-jacketed weird little helpers is hard to beat. "Hush" is such a clever episode that it ascends monster of the week status to become almost Twilight Zone-esque. Also, for the first time, Buffy sees Riley doing his Initiative thing, and Riley sees Buffy being the Slayer, but they can't talk about it?? That's good shit.

5. "The Wish" S3E9

Both "Something Blue" and "The Wish" feel like the writers decided to use fanfic premises on their own show... so obviously I like them a lot. But getting to watch a dark timeline AU with interesting world-building and attention to detail, a hilarious and horrifying Cordelia POV, AND a smirking kinky vampire Willow? Hello?? And the fact that the Wishverse comes up again in "Doppelgänger" (another truly fun episode) only improves my opinion. I imagine this is the kind of episode fans simply love coming back to.

4. "Restless" S4E22

This David Lynch-ass dream sequence was a weird choice for a season finale, but an extremely ambitious and cool episode. I should say up front that I love David Lynch-ass dream shit. There were creative and well-executed scene transitions as characters moved seamlessly from one dream room into another. Several memorably neat shots - Willow running between endless curtains as she tries to get onstage, Buffy alone in a vast desert with a weirdly high camera angle. And I got myself all excited thinking that the First Slayer would maybe become a different kind of antagonist - maybe not even fully revealed in this episode, or maybe an Id-like aspect of Buffy herself. But I forgot Whedon gonna Whedon, so the First Slayer had to be someone Buffy could punch in the end. And the First Slayer is sadly yet another primitive-themed, emotionally-stunted character of color for this show. Most of her lines in this episode are literally voiced by a white woman speaking for her, and of all the dumb quips to make, Buffy had a line about her hair being unprofessional? Also, I'm a lesbian, so the fact that the most explicit act of intimacy between Willow and Tara this show has allowed us to see occurs in Xander's horny dream sequence... it’s unforgivable, Joss. This episode was one of my favorites ever, deeply marred by some bad writing choices.

3. "Lovers Walk" S3E8

Spike, perhaps the best non-Willow character in this show, is back in Sunnydale, a hilariously heartbroken mess of a man, hell-bent on getting his former girlfriend Drusilla back. (Drusilla left him for a fungus demon.) So Spike breaks into a magic shop to get ingredients for a love spell, where he runs into Willow, who is getting ingredients for a de-lusting spell, because she is worried she and Xander will be too thirsty to behave appropriately in public with their actual partners, Oz and Cordelia. This is a hilarious moment just to exist. This is all the episode needed to do to satisfy me. But the fact that Spike then kidnaps Willow, and it ends with tragic stakes of everyone's relationships coming apart, not to mention me genuinely thinking Cordelia was dead for a minute there - wow. Chef’s kiss. The episode is balanced shockingly well between Spike being an ominous villain, and being the sort of lovable semi-evil (more gremlin-like) side character he'll become in season 4. What a wild ride.

2. "Graduation Day" S3E21-22

I'm counting this two part season finale as one because it's my list and I'll do what I want. "Graduation Day" feels like a quintessential Buffy episode executed to perfection. It has Buffy reaffirming her position as a moral heroine, sacrificing her own blood to save Angel's life even when she thought she had to kill Faith to save him. It has Buffy and Faith (or Buffy/Faith, as I prefer to think of them) getting to square off in a dramatic, tough fight. It has a lot of Mayor Wilkins, a character I truly adore for some reason. Nothing like a public administrator who plays mini golf in his office, wants you to chew with your mouth closed, and will kill a graduating class of high schoolers to gain immortality. The catharsis of the whole school getting to fight back against evil, instead of just Buffy against the world - a real joy. This episode misses the top spot for two reasons. "A special vampire poison and the only cure is the blood of a Slayer" is too contrived for me to let slide, and also I had to see Cordelia and Wesley kiss.

1. "Becoming" S2E21-22

Buffy’s season finales really do have good stories and satisfying payoff. First off, Buffy starts this episode by punching a cop and fleeing from the law. Later, Spike also punches a cop. A.k.a., Buffy said blue lives don't matter. Second - I haven't gotten a chance to comment on this yet, but all throughout season 2, evil Angel is such a joy to watch. As regular Angel, David Boreanaz makes exactly one face ("I am a kicked, angsty puppy") and bless his heart, it gets so tiresome. As evil Angel, he is so expressive, dynamic and terrifyingly creative in his badness. And I love his weird threesome energy with Spike and Drusilla. But also, it's so hard to watch Buffy suffer as she deals with her evil boyfriend doing evil things. Her ultimate choice in this episode, to kill Angel even as Willow's spell restores his soul, gave me some real big feels! Also, this episode marks the first moment of Willow doing big, plot-shifting magic on her own, solidifying her transformation from computer nerd to witch!

@ellegreenawy : y’all celie and i would be an iconic team because we come up with so many good ideas but our best ideas are always in the middle of the night. so you best know if reid ain’t solving the case, celie and i crack it at 2 am. also, celie is definitely rossi’s favorite. she’s the only person he lets cook with him regularly, and i’m the one who definitely got distracted and forgot to put water in the pasta pot so i ended up setting the pasta on fire so i am banned from the kitchen most of the time (it’s not that i can’t cook, it’s that i got distracted that one time and rossi refuses to believe me). oh and her and i would definitely write a book together the way rossi did. and we’d guest lecture together too.

@babyblockcolorcat : fabs and i would def be in seasons 8-9 of cm together and we would get nothing done because this girl would not be able to function around alex blake. but also faby would rock a blazer. her and em definitely share a closet. faby around alex is like reid around practically any girl in the early seasons, and it’s kind of adorable but also the rest of us (me and the team) are standing around like “why the fuck is alex so oblivious” (of course this is an au where alex isn’t married). i mean the whole “good morning, faby!” from alex and then faby accidentally walks into a pole and spills her coffee

@reidsemily : bro bekah and i would be an elite partnership. we definitely spend our free time with penny and morgan because i feel like the four of us would be iconic together. also if we’re called in for a case in the middle of the night her and i are definitely the ones that show up and chug five cups of coffee before we can even say a word. and then someone (probably jj) is going to point out that my blazer is inside out and that bekah is wear two different shoes and we’re just going to drink another cup of coffee

@linguinereid : i would love to hear conversations between bee and reid because i’d probably learn more from them than my entire school life. bee is definitely a major part as to why we can solve all these cases, and i feel like her and i interrogating a suspect together would be interesting. i’d probably talk enough to bore the unsub to death, and then bee would just say things and psychoanalyze the suspect until they broke

@ssaemilyprentits : okay so i feel like steph and morgan have been in a prank war since she started working at the bau and somehow i got involved in it and now we’re just this chaotic mess of “ok ani wait you distract morgan and i’ll go mix salt into his coffee” and “steph keep derek busy so i can go and stick this sign that has his phone number and ‘call me for foot massages’ written on it on the back of his car”

@whiskey-fluent and @jenniferxprentiss : i wholeheartedly believe that h and ash would be the most sarcastic and upfront agents. like straight up would make the suspects tremble during interrogation. and they’d always be sent to do stuff together; they’d be the dream team. i know technically i don’t fit into this equation but like their energy together as fbi agents would be immaculate so i needed to talk about it. like that one episode where the unsub is morgan’s cousin’s husband who forced her to marry him and jj and emily walk into the interrogation room and are conversing about will and henry? yeah, that’s h and ash. i’d probably be penny in the trio.

@heat-waveee : ok i think lb and i would honestly be a very productive duo during work. like she’d def keep my procrastination in check on paperwork days and we’d be good at finding info together during cases. and lb would be great at talking to eyewitnesses and friends/family of the victim(s). but when the case is over? we’d be insane. like at dinner parties with the team, nights out at the bar- we’d be going crazy. oh also we’d be crushing on em so much

@apologetically-apologetic : so abbie and i would be great at coming up with theories because in the short amount of time i’ve talked to her we’ve had so many genius ideas. i think we’d observe crime scenes and just piggyback theories onto each other until we figure out a fairly solid one and then use evidence we find later and adjust or expand our theory and then we’d solve cases really well. also, i think if we ever got like trapped with an unsub or like taken together by an unsub we’d definitely come up with a good plan and there’s like an 85% chance that we’d be fine

@reidemandweep : roo and i would just be an organized mess tbh. our desks are for sure next to each other, and whoever comes in first makes coffee for themselves and the other person as well. we’d probably hold off on paperwork till the very last minute but turn it in right on time. i also think roo and i would make a great team when interrogating a suspect. like that one episode where jj and morgan pretend to be a couple and talk to that white supremacist guy? yeah roo and i would be the gay poc couple to annoy the unsub if they were bugged by that. also, we’d definitely be caught trash talking strauss. like “ugh she’s so annoying and messes stuff up for us a lot” and then everyone’s quiet and we’re like “she’s right behind us isn’t she”. we’d also tease rossi about dating her but in the end i don’t think we’d hate her completely because we’re nice enough to understand she’s doing her job but also we’d be like “no <3″ to most of the stuff she says

@eusuntgroot : hj and i would honestly be very nice people together i think. well, hj would be my better half. she’d be really good at talking to families of the victims, because she’s great at being empathetic and she’s so caring. the two of us would probably be sent to speak with victims and eyewitnesses because we’d be good together at calming them down and being there for them and trying to get information. also, hj and i would be great at talking an unsub down together if necessary 

@agenthotchner : honestly i feel like snow and i would be really badass undercover. like i get very “entropy” vibes from the two of us. like tara and morgan vibes in that episode. snow and i would most definitely find an unsub while undercover at a bar, lure him outside, and then threaten to hit him in the face with a pair of heels as we handcuff him and lead him to the cop car

@davidrossi-ismydad : sammy and i would have such chaotic energy during paperwork days- hanging out with penelope, locking jj and emily in a room until they got their sexual tension out of the way, sammy hanging out in hotch’s office doing god knows what. sammy and i would definitely make everyone laugh whenever they needed to but sammy would also come up with some of the most genius ideas that the others wouldn’t think of. he’d would definitely be the character that at the 30 minute mark of the episode is like “maybe we’re thinking this part of the profile wrong” and coming up with the correct profile and we’d be like “yes you’re onto something”

@cinnamon-rroll : okay jemma and i would be great at stakeouts. like we’d have the snacks ready and would have the most interesting conversations while watching our surroundings from the car with binoculars. i also think we’d be good undercover, too

@spideyspencer : listen avery would also be so good at interrogating suspects. like so amazing. she’d just be so good at intimidating them and not taking their shit whatsoever. and when we’d be chasing an unsub i’d definitely chase after them and she’d find an easier route and be standing there waiting for us. she’d be putting handcuffs on the unsub and i’d be wheezing and half out of breath like “how *wheeze* did you *wheeze* get here *wheeze* so *wheeze* fast?”

@prentiss-dinozzo : i feel like noelle and i would probably be like tara together: badass but also good critical thinkers and smart. and i think we’d do similar things to what reid did: go through case files, make geographic profiles, that sort of thing. and i also think we’d be good at guest lecturing together

No One Asked, But (Redux)

Waiting for my nose to decongest so I can (maybe) sleep. So, here are some answers no one asked for. I'm going to throw a smattering of fandoms in here.

what is your absolute favorite ship?

One Tree Hill: Nathan and Haley

In a show that wasn't always the most realistic (i.e. high school kids owning nightclubs...), Nathan and Haley felt like a very genuine relationship that became one of the healthiest in the show (after some work on both sides). I think Nathan makes Haley brave by believing in her and encouraging her when she's uncertain of herself. Haley makes Nathan reflect on himself, makes him empathize and rise above himself. They have their ups and downs, but these two always stick it out and they make each other better people.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow and Oz

These two are almost an OTP for me. I think Tara was a better fit for Willow during season 4 and onward, but I feel like Willow and Oz could also be an OTP under the right circumstances. They were so adorable and genuine with each other, accepting one another - flaws and all. They were very much ride or die. I could nerd about them for hours.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow and Tara

These two are a natural OTP for me. They bring out new sides of one another, and each is more confident with the other. They truly make each other better people. If it hadn't been for Tara's death I think these two would have always found a way back to each other, no matter what. Easily one of the healthiest relationships on the show.

what ship do you hate most?

Supernatural: Dean and Lisa

I didn't mind Lisa, but this relationship wasn't earned at all. They took a skeletal character, gave her no layers, and expected us to buy that this lady was Dean's happy ending. Cassie or Jo would have made much more sense.

The Walking Dead: Andrea and The Governor

I have a soft spot for Andrea. I hated her in the beginning, but she became one of my favorite characters. It bothered me when she became wrapped up in a man or when her plot became dependent on a man (it bothered me when they paired her with Shane too). She was such a powerhouse character and she grew so much by the time we got to the Governor. It drove me nuts that they backslid her and had her become overly invested in a guy she barely knew. Also, it literally killed her so there's that.

Angel: Connor and "Cordelia"

There was a lot I didn't like about this. First, that they ruined Cordelia by making her a villain, then had her pair up with Connor (who was kind of her surrogate son for a minute there). That pairing then also ruined Connor. Just, ick. So much wrong with it.

Lost: Jack and Kate

Least interesting ship in the show, and it was always the one that got shoved in my face. I didn't really have anything in particular I disliked about it, other than it was made so prominent when there were so many more interesting pairings we could have been focusing on more (i.e. Jack and Ana).

what was your first ship, and what fandom is it from?

Interview with the Vampire: Lestat and Louis

I was pretty young when I saw the movie (Maybe 9 or 10), and I always saw Lestat and Louis as a couple. This was reinforced when I eventually read the novel.

explain why do/don’t ship [pairing]

Angel: Angel and Cordelia

I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd never write them as a couple, but I like Angel and Cordelia so much as friends and colleagues. I just don't see a romantic thing there.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow and Kennedy

This one didn't at all feel earned. Kennedy felt like a rebound, but was treated like an endgame. I just didn't buy it. Kennedy reminded me of high school Cordelia, with her venomous, selfish streak and I didn't see that very prominent trait being attractive to Willow.

One Tree Hill: Lucas and Brooke

These two never made sense to me. Brooke seemed to only like Lucas because Peyton liked him, then she moved in on him knowing that. Not a great start. Then that led to the whole cheating Lucas and Peyton plot and it felt like the whole ship was created as a plot device to make things difficult for Lucas and Peyton.

what’s a ship you like that most people don’t?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy and Riley

This was just a healthy ship for a while, and I really liked seeing Buffy in a relationship that was stable and reliable where she didn't have to worry about the guy deciding to maim one of her friends for shits and giggles. I do wish we'd gotten more time to get to know Riley better as his own character before they paired them. He couldn't really stand on his own. I also think he would have been more interesting if he was just a normal guy trained in combat instead of that whole "Initiative drugs" thing.

Lost: Shannon and Boone

Okay, the thing I liked about these two was that they were basically Kathryn and Sebastian from Cruel Intentions stuck on an island together. Their dynamic had so many twists and kept me hooked. I wish they'd stuck around longer.

what's a ship you hate that most people like?

Friends: Ross and Rachel

I just think these two bring out the worst in each other. I don't think they could have ended up with anyone else because they always seemed to find their way back to each other, but it was such an unhealthy relationship. It makes me cringe.

what is the most underrated ship, in your opinion?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Xander and Cordelia

Normally I don't like it when two characters who can't stand each other end up together. But, I think they helped each other grow. Cordelia became less shallow, choosing Xander over her popularity, and became slightly warmer because of it. Xander became less judgmental and more humble. I think their relationship is an important cornerstone in both of their arcs.

Penny Dreadful: Vanessa and Dorian

These two were just ridiculously hot, for one. But also, Dorian found the darker parts of Vanessa fascinating. He accepted her and wanted to know more about her. Vanessa didn't have to hide who she was around him. I wish they'd done more with them, particularly in later episodes.

why do you think [pairing] is so popular?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy and Spike

Again, these two are hot. Also, Spike sees a side of Buffy no one else does, and he accepts her entirely. We also see a kinder side of Spike in his quiet, intimate moments with Buffy when he's comforting her or giving her advice. Spike also becomes a part of Buffy's family (which includes her friends). He forms a close bond with Dawn in particular. He makes an effort to be a part of her life.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy and Angel

This is a Romeo and Juliet level "forbidden love" story - a classic romance. Angel and Buffy are passionate. They're partners, working together and fighting alongside one another. They're equals. Angel will do anything to help Buffy or to make her happy, and she'd do the same for him. Neither of them parted because they wanted to. Angel wanted to give Buffy a chance at a normal life, and she had no choice but to accept that and try to move on. This left a perpetual "will they, won't they?" vibe for the rest of the series runs.

what’s your favorite canon moment of [pairing]?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy and Faith

My favorite moment for them - one of my favorite scenes in anything ever - is the coma dream at the end of season 3. I believe this reflects Buffy's feelings for Faith. The cat symbolises Faith and Buffy inquires about who's going to take care of "him." Faith corrects that it's a she. I think Buffy wanted to take care of Faith, and felt she'd failed to do that. Faith also gives Buffy everything she has in the dream, and Buffy is overwhelmed, saying she can't use all of it. Faith tells her to take what she needs. This is Buffy acknowledging that Faith gave all she was capable of giving to their friendship/relationship, and that Buffy couldn't accept all of it. Faith tells Buffy how to defeat the Mayor. I think Buffy hopes Faith will eventually come around and join her side of the fight again. I could go on and on about these two.

One Tree Hill: Clay and Quinn

This is morbid, but I loved the episode that was one big coma dream for these two. It was such a well done episode and they had kind of a perfect fantasy day inside this horrible moment.

Penny Dreadful: Vanessa and Ethan

The exorcism when Ethan will not give up, and he's terrified, but he keeps going. He's not leaving that room alive until Vanessa is back. Such a powerful scene.

One Tree Hill: Lucas and Peyton

The school shooting episode when Lucas carries Peyton out of the school. They're not even a couple at this point, but it's such a vulnerable moment for both of them in the midst of one of the show's most raw, powerful episodes.

I'm not sure where this would fit, but I always wondered how these two would have fared.

have you ever written fanfiction/drawn fanart of [pairing]? would you consider it?

I wrote a fanfic ages ago that took place between Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat where Lestat and Louis reunited.

I also wrote a fanfic for David and Michael from The Lost Boys.

I don't typically write for a pairing. I kind of start with a plot and see where it goes. But I'm trying to write for a few pairings. If anything comes out decent I'll post it up.

He swallows and is still trying to puzzle it out when the Santa finishes with the little girl and turns their way.

John Sheppard looks back out at Rodney from behind a fuzzy white Santa beard, his eyes widening almost imperceptibly as they shift from Rodney to Charlie and then back again.

Best story I wrote this year: take me to church, hands down. Coming back to Sterek, after two years away felt like coming home. Stepping back into Stiles and Derek’s world, into their feelings for each other, was an amazing experience. I miss them, and I love them still, and the story that I gave myself the chance to write was dreamy and quiet, and just so entirely conveys the feel that I wanted to achieve this year.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. Probably a toss up between  is this love?,  take me to church, and move the stars for no one. Those were the fics that I felt most at home in, the ones that came easily and quietly, like stepping into a comfy robe.

Okay, NOW your most popular story. hard and heavy, dirty and mean comes in first at 992 kudos, 12,356 hits, and 228 bookmarks. I had the good fortune of posting it right after Stranger Things 2 came out, so it got nearly as much traffic as the fic that I wrote last year for the Stranger Things fandom. It is entirely filthy locker room porn between Steve and the latest asshole to be introduced to the high school, and basically exactly the itch that I needed scratched after watching the season. Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I’m, um. Maybe a little bit put out that I published the first chapter of  The Yawning Grave, and it’s only gotten seven kudos. I mean, it’s a prologue, and I made it abundantly clear that I wasn’t sure when the next three chapters would be out, but it was still a little bit of a downer, considering how long I’ve been fretting about the fic itself.

Most fun story to write: jewel of the south was super fun to write, but I tend to have fun with all of my crossover prompts. Imagining Rey in the Dishonored universe (twice!) was great fun, and I would totally do it again. I’m going to pretend that this isn’t tickling the portion of my brain that wants to write a Reylo AU where Rey is the street orphan in Karnaca that Empress Ben Organa runs into when he’s on the run. Don’t think that way, Heather.

Story that could have been better? I think that all of my fics could be better in certain ways, and the day that I don’t feel that way I’ll have gotten too conceited to live. I think the one that bugs me the most is one that I haven’t even published yet. Because I hit a snag with the plot and can’t decide if I feel like going back and changing everything or if there’s a handy work around. If we aren’t counting this one, caught off guard by you was the Prompto/Noctis tragic love story that was supposed to be two or three times as large as it is now, and also feature tent sex.

Story I wrote to fix things: take me to church and Bifurcation Theory. The first I wrote because I received a prompt regarding Derek and Stiles around the time that the first episode of the last season aired. I didn’t watch it, but I did see the scene where Stiles does a literal spit-take upon seeing a shirtless Derek on screen in his FBI class. My brain basically went, ‘huh, they’re gonna fuck it up’ and so I just went for it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s canon.

The second I wrote after I’d reluctantly let myself watch season 6. 6A? Whatever. I was pretty intrigued by the idea of Stiles being taken and forgotten, and I don’t mind Stydia, so I watched it and Bifurcation Theory is basically what I wanted to happen.

Longest completed fic this year: Bifurcation Theory, at 7k. So, you know. Not particularly long at all.

Fandom you enjoyed writing for most this year: I actually had a lot of fun dipping my toes into the Stargate Atlantis fandom this year. The people are all really great, and I wish that I’d been around for the old days. Alas, I was up to my eyeballs in anime and Kingdom Hearts.

Favorite character you wrote this year: Toss up between Lydia and Rodney. I like both of their brains, for - weirdly - a lot of the same reasons. Lydia in Bifurcation Theory felt comfortable. A lot of the fic itself is full of tropes that I love. Angst, road trips, little food places that are entirely based off of cafes that I frequent, two people having sex because they’re pining after a third. And Lydia herself is strong and soft and just. I really like writing girls, and Lydia is one of my favorites.

Rodney is just easy.

Most memorable comment this year: Basically every comment that I got on take me to church? Some people welcomed me back to the fandom, others made comments on exactly what I wanted them to feel about the fic - slow, sleepy, and according to one reviewer, tired, but hopeful. I wanted them to be able to feel the atmosphere of the fic above all else, from the quiet echo of the church to that southern sun shower to the shitty apartment. I even had someone comment on the little town in North Carolina that I used as the setting, so all of them were a delight.

Also, I feel the need to say that @popkin16 has some of the best comments and every time I publish a Mcshep fic I eagerly wait in the hopes of a comment from her. They make me really happy.

Fics you wanted to write but didn’t:

Okay, but I’ve written so little compared to what I’ve wanted to. The Sabriel AU is definitely at the top of this list, though I’m hoping to fix that soon. I have the SGA fic where John is a wraith, the SGA fic where John is dead and Rodney is raising his kid, the Enjolras/Grantaire fic, the roadtrip/beach fic that never got written because I couldn’t figure out if I wanted it to be Voltron, Kingdom Hearts, or SGA, the long ass Dishonored fic that spans all three games and basically centers around the idea that the Outsider, Corvo, and Emily come together as the most dysfunctional family ever, the prompt-fics that I started but never finished, the Beetlejuice AU, the girl Cisco AU, the bodyswapping Reylo fic... and those are just ones that I liked enough to jot a sentence or two down somewhere.

Oddest story: Probably move the stars for no one. I mean... it is a fic where John Sheppard is the goblin king. Though   I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus was a little crackier than I usually get. Hardest story to do: Hah, my answer to this question last year was the Sabriel AU. That... is still at least slightly true, though the wraith John AU has been a pain in my ass and isn’t even out yet. Of those that I did actually publish this year, caught off guard by you which gave me so much trouble that I eventually just published it as is. Fortunately, a lot of the fic that I wrote this year were little things that niggled their way into my brain, so they came naturally. I didn’t do any challenges or secret santas or big bangs, so I didn’t have to force myself to write anything. Easiest story to write? Again, a lot of them sort of wrote themselves since they came out of my brain mostly formed already. can’t deny your appetite was probably one of the easiest, as were all of the ones that I’ve already mentioned on here. take me to church was pretty high up there.

Most mining of your own history in one story: take me to church and Bifurcation Theory, probably. For the first one, I spent a lot of time in chuches as a kid, a lot of time in cars, and well, the entirety of my childhood in the south. Stiles’ apartment is also completely based off of my last apartment. Well. The building anyway. I had two other roommates and a lot more furniture in my actual apartment, but the layout is all the same.

The vegan cafe that Lydia and Derek stop at is based off of Cornerstone Cafe in Columbus, right down to the probably-gay teal haired kid and the pretty college girl who checks out Lydia. I’m pretty sure there are other bits I’ve borrowed, but that’s the one that stands out.

Oh! Also, it’s good to be in love, it really does suit you. There’s... a whole lot of domestic mumbo jumbo in that. Also, weed smoking on what is an exact replica of my back porch. Actually, scratch that, upon rereading this I realize that it is also an exact replica of my house, minus the weird clock. The table holding Riku’s moon flowers holds my bougainvillea and a couple of my coffee plants in real life. Mickey-the-cat is not mine, but he is based off of BMO, who is. Looking back on it, I’m actually 100% sure that what inspired this entire fic was coming home from work and watching the fireflies with Nick on our back deck. We have a really dense knot of trees surrounding our backyard, and the fireflies are NUTS in the summer. It’s really gorgeous back there.

Themes, or absence thereof: Atmosphere. Feeling-the-fic. Slow, quiet love and burn-you-up passion. Where did you publish/archive your stories? Ao3, as per usual. Story I haven’t yet written, but intend to: Sigh. Fingers crossed that I’ll get the Sabriel AU out at least. Though this question has reminded me that I wanted to finish the Carmilla AU as well.

Sexiest moment (excerpt): “Did he ever fuck you?”

“Yes,” Derek gasps, a ragged catch to his voice. Her smile grows and then carefully, she crawls off of him, leaving him blinking at her blankly.

“Good,” she whispers, and hitches her knee invitingly. “So you can fuck me how he fucked you.”

He blinks at her and for a moment she thinks that she may have broken him, but then he’s surging into motion, pinning her to the bed, and sliding home in one smooth movement. She gasps, head thrown back against the pillows, and wraps her legs around his waist. They hold like that, both trembling, sweat on their skin and the smell of sex heavy in the air. His lips hover over hers, so close that if either of them moved even an inch they would drag together, his breath hot against her lips. His eyes dart down to her lips before they jerk back up to her eyes.

“Does that mean I should kiss you how he kissed me?” Derek asks, his voice wrecked, and she whimpers, high and desperate.

“Yes,” she breathes, wetting her lips. “Please.”

“Who else has been touching you like that, Harrington?” Billy whispers, his lips catching on the curve of Steve’s ear. He licks his lips, tongue flicking out like a snake, like he’s tasting Steve. Like he wants to eat him. “Was it your daddy?”

Steve’s heart is pounding, adrenaline singing in his veins. He’s let this go on too long, has all but given Billy the advantage here - Steve's let himself be backed up against the shower, the handle digging into his lower back.

With a sigh, Steve finally opens his eyes and looks at him.

Billy is standing too close, fully clothed and soaked to the bone, his own hair damp from the spray. The only thing he seems to have thought to take off is his jean jacket, which has been flung thoughtlessly at the benches behind them. His shirt is near translucent against his chest. When he sees Steve looking, he grins, touching the purpling bruise that hasn’t quite faded from Steve’s lower lip.

“Now this one I remember giving you,” he remarks, pressing in closer, until his head is under the spray too, tilted towards Steve.

Steve’s breath hitches and he tries to backpedal, going up on his tiptoes when he finds that there’s no more ground to give. The handle digs painfully into his lower back, but he can’t be bothered to care. He gasps as the hand cups his jaw, Billy’s fingers lingering over another bruise before they begin to skitter down the column of his throat.

Billy grins at him and leans down, pressing a strangely gentle kiss to a fist-shaped bruise at the base of his throat.

“You wear them well,” he whispers, lips slick against Steve’s skin.

Crackiest moment (excerpt): “Dinner should be ready around then,” he says with a shrug, and realizes with an abrupt, sinking sensation that Charlie is going to think that he’s inviting Santa Claus to dinner with them. “I’m uh, shit, here.”

His cheeks go ruddy with embarrassment as he rummages through his bag and comes up with an uncapped green pen and a pad of crinkled yellow paper. He quickly scrawls their address across it before tearing it off the pad and shoving it John’s way. Jesus fucking Christ, the entire food court just watched him set up a date with Santa.

“I, um,” Rodney says, becoming increasingly aware of the surge of noise coming from the disgruntled soccer moms waiting in line. He cringes, dragging Charlie down a few steps. “I’ll just see you later. Maybe.”

He trips on the rug once he reaches the landing, but catches himself on a reindeer before he can go sprawling into the nearby fountain. His face is on fire, but when he looks back up, John Sheppard is smiling down at him, fond and horribly, achingly familiar.

Favorite dialogue (excerpt): “Come on,” Stiles says, pushing to his feet. He turns once he’s up and grabs Derek’s hand, yanking him upright before Derek can think to protest. “I’ve got a place.”

Derek looks at him, his nose wrinkling dubiously. “You have a place in Murfreesboro?”

Stiles raises an eyebrow back, refusing to give ground. “I have a place in Virginia. It’s like, a three hour drive, tops. Less if I speed.”

Derek scoffs. “You want to take me back to Quantico.”

“I’m an intern, Derek. Pretty sure they’re not going to go looking for you under my mattress. Come on,” he coaxes, jostling Derek with his elbow. “You know how this works, we’ve done it before. Safest place to be is right under their nose.”

“This is a little bigger than hiding in the closet every once in awhile so your father doesn’t notice that you're harboring a fugitive, Stiles,” Derek tells him. He shuffles backwards, but Stiles follows him, always a little too close. When Stiles refuses to look chastised Derek reaches out and grabs hold of his wrist, stopping him at arm’s length. He swallows. “We aren’t talking about you getting kicked out of your program if they find me. You’ll go to prison.”

Stiles watches him, his eyes dark. Knowing. He takes a pointed step forward, always pushing, and turns his wrist in Derek’s grip. He’s still watching as he threads their fingers together carefully, his palm a dry rasp against Derek’s.

“I know,” he whispers, and leans in to press their mouths together.

“You have no power over me,” Rodney whispers, just to see the way that the Goblin King’s eyes narrow - how he steps closer, until his narrow hips are pressed up against the footboard. He reaches out, curling long, elegant fingers around the cold metal rungs between them, and though he hisses out low through his teeth when he finds the sting of iron waiting for him, he does not look away.

John is a looming figure in the shadows, a slash of moonlight thrown across his face illuminating the smirk that sits there. He slouches in towards Rodney, sways toward him, his clever eyes hooded, and smiles like he’s won something. Asks, “You sure about that?”

“No,” Rodney admits and pushes himself up. The cracked saucer is in John’s hand, empty. Rodney licks his lips. “Not at all.”

“I love you,” he offers quietly. It’s the only secret he has left.

John cocks his head, letting go of the bars and coming around the side of the bed. He is human enough, save the glint of gold in his collar and the slight sharpness of his teeth. He smells real, and absurdly, Rodney wants to dance with him.

“Nothing is freely given,” John says, but it sounds like a question. There isn’t an apology in his eyes, but Rodney hadn’t expected there to be one. The empty saucer in his hand was proof enough.

Rodney shrugs. “Your rules, not mine.”

Favorite lines (excerpt): It’s raining when they leave the church, a warm downpour that leaves everything smelling of green things and wet earth. The sun is still shining, giving the parking lot a strange, otherworldly air. Stiles squints out into the glare, mashing the button on his key fob until an anonymous black sedan honks back at them, the tail lights flashing red.

Stiles bounds across the parking lot, holding a hand over his head to ward off the rain. A hint of ankle winks back at Derek as he scrambles gracelessly into the driver’s seat. Derek follows at a more sedate pace, swinging by the car that he’d bought for a couple hundred bucks from a local hick’s junkyard. He grabs his bag from the back and the picture of Laura that he’s got pinned under the visor, but leaves the rest to rot in the parking lot. Someone will find it eventually.

When he climbs into the passenger seat he’s uncomfortably damp, but can’t bring himself to be troubled over it. He feels lighter than he has in months. Maybe years.

“What happened to the jeep?” Derek asks, dragging a careless hand across the unfamiliar dashboard. The jeep had reeked of Stiles, of junk food and sweat and a little like the cheap cherry-scented pine tree he had looped over the rear-view mirror. This car still smells new, fake leather and plastic, with the faintest undercurrent of boy.

“Left it with Scott,” Stiles says easily, sliding the key home and turning the ignition. It doesn’t even fight him for it. “It wouldn’t have made the trip.”

That was true enough. Derek watches the parking lot disappear from view, relaxing into his seat more and more as the minutes pass. Derek is tired. It's been days since he's felt safe enough to catch more than a few hours of sleep in his shitty car, head propped uncomfortably against the window. Here, with Stiles next to him, Derek’s body is finally beginning to cave in to the need for sleep.

He makes himself stay awake for awhile, long enough for Stiles to flick the radio over to some generic top 40’s station. He keeps it quiet, occasionally mouthing along to the words, but never once getting loud enough to be offensive. The third time that Derek jerks himself out of a light doze, Stiles turns to him incredulously and says, “For god’s sake, just go to sleep. I knew what I was signing up for when I saw those bags under your eyes.”

The first time that Rey sees her brother practice the art, she is being fitted for her wedding dress.

He is not strictly speaking supposed to be in the room with them, but none of the servants have quite worked out how to tell him to leave, and Rey doesn’t care one way or another herself. From her understanding, seeing the bride before the wedding makes for a bad match. It brings misfortune on the future household. Bad crops. Dead cattle. Some tales even say that it leads to an empty womb.

Let them be unlucky, Rey thinks with a sniff.

Her brother is reading, half-reclined on the settee to the left of the door, his leg crossed at the knee. It’s been well over an hour since he’s moved to do anything more strenuous than turn a page. Whatever lies within the book's pages has captivated him thoroughly, his mouth having gone ever so slightly slack as he mouths words to himself, black eyes intent.

The sun is beginning to set, the room growing long with shadows around them.

Rey is watching him when her brother flicks his wrist lazily, still absorbed in his book, and calls a ribbon of scarlet flame to the palm of his hand. It winds itself lovingly between his fingers, circling around and around his wrists, like some lazy beast.

Startled, Rey’s breath catches in her chest. Blinking, her brother looks up, catching her eye over the flame, the red glow casting him in a devilish light.

He cocks his head, and she wonders at his expression, the curiosity there as he unravels the flame outward, letting it find the wicks of the fat, ivory candles on the desk next to him. He quirks an eyebrow at her.

The room is still half in darkness, the last of the fading sunlight leaving them.

Rey licks her lips and steels her expression, flexing her fingers nervously before she raises her hands and cups them together. She doesn’t look away from him as she calls on her oldest friend, the familiar blue flame licking first over her knuckles and wrists, teasing, before it settles between her palms. She lights the rest of the room like that, and doesn’t pay any attention to the way the seamstress is fretting about Rey scorching the sleeves.

Her brother’s eyes are dark and intent on her, his book forgotten.

Rodney’s mark started out small, elegant slashes of color splashed across the meatiest part of his bicep. At the time, Rodney was six years old and didn’t much care for the idea of soulmates. There were cooler things than a bunch of blue paint on his arm, like black holes and the crowded, complicated mess of wiring inside his dad’s alarm clock. He’s going on nine when his mark changes, the familiar blues and greens and whites of sea and foam now a backdrop for the gleaming ferris wheel laid over top the waves, black lines on cool colors. He stares at it, lips pursed, and can’t for the life of him decide if he actually likes the new addition. When he’s thirteen the dark silhouette of a sleek, dangerous looking airplane is added to the mess. The plane itself is larger than the waves, larger than the ferris wheel, so long that the tip of it’s pointed nose touches the inside of his elbow. He grimaces at it, touching the curve of its broad back with one finger. It takes an hour of hunting through books at the library before he recognizes the shape of the SR-71 “Blackbird.” By the time Rodney’s fifteen, two more things have been added - a horse made out of shadows and edges, indistinct black smoke licking up the insides of his forearms and the mandelbrot set that sits neatly underneath it, an expanse of beautiful lines and inky dark that go clear down to his wrist. At fifteen years old, Rodney is significantly more interested in his soulmate than he was when he was six years old. He’s moved to America and is the top of his class at one of the most prestigious colleges in North America. He doesn’t like the majority of his peers and is beginning to realize that it’s entirely possible that he just doesn’t like people in general. He’s prickly, bad-tempered, and his ego has swelled to be the size of a small city. Whoever his soulmate is, she apparently likes the ocean, ferris wheels, planes, horses, and math. Rodney, who enjoys exactly one of those things, doesn’t have very high hopes.

Fic goals: I’m going to carefully not say anything about finishing the Sabriel AU, because that way lies madness. Instead I will say that in 2018 I would like to a) write something novel-length, b) write something original, and c) focus more on original characters. ....Additional goal: write over 60k.

Aliciaverse Masterpost

The Aliciaverse is a Buffyverse continuity set after my Iron Coin Chronicles fic series, it is a ‘2nd Generation’ verse, centering on the character Alicia Lehane, daughter of Faith Lehane and Amy Lehane née Madison as she goes to college at UC Berkeley, starting in Freshman year, in 2027. Apart from Alicia, the main other characters are Kathryn Lockley, Daniel Chase-Harris, Jacobo “Jack” Rosado, Talia McDermott and Dr. Carter Williams. Technically, there are two other OCs in this verse, but they aren’t part of the semi-planned Aliciaverse stories - Jennifer Joyce “JJ” Chase-Harris and Iris Alonna Gunn. They exist off to the side, and are not present in Berkeley at all.

The technical divergence, of course, is the events of the Iron Coin Chronicles starting in Season 3 Buffy, which are still being written. However, for the purposes of understanding the Aliciaverse, you don’t need to know all the intricate details about every in and out of the ICC. What you do need to know is as follows:

Xander and Cordelia never break up, Cordelia manages (with Willow’s help) to secure enough of her money to go to UC Sunnydale for two years until, in the aftermath if Glory’s defeat, Xander and Cordelia move to Sacremento (Cordelia transfers to UC Sacremento, Xander transfers to the Sacremento branch of the construction company) because its finally time to move off the Hellmouth. They of course stay in touch with their friends and help with major crises when needed. They get married and have two children: Daniel Chase-Harris and Jennifer Joyce “JJ” Chase Harris.

Amy Madison never gets turned into a rat, joins up with the Scoobies, and becomes friends with, and eventually falls in love with (and gets fallen in love with by) Faith Lehane. Faith, for a number of reasons, doesn’t go Evil, doesn’t end up in a coma, and sticks around in Sunnydale helping Buffy until she too moves out of Sunnydale shortly after Glory’s defeat, when she gets a Slayer Dream that suggests she needs to move to L.A. Eventually, Amy and Faith get married, and Amy gets pregnant with (thanks to an accident involving a stolen fertility idol) their child, Alicia Lehane

Oz dies during Willow’s freshman year in a freak accident. While it takes longer than in canon due to Willow’s grieving and mourning, Willow and Tara do eventually get together, WIllow realizes she’s gay (though she never believes she didn’t love Oz), etc. They stay on the Hellmouth and eventually become foster parents. I have yet to decide if they have or adopt children of their own at some point. Oh, and Oz bit Willow by accident some time before he died, so Willow is a werewolf.

Spike and Drusilla are given souls during the fight against Adam, as they were working for him, and Buffy & Co. needed a way to find out what Adam had planned (and torture was rejected as a plan). They flit in and out of the Sunnydale/L.A. Area, but are often off on their own, fighting demons and vamps in other parts of the country.

Buffy and Riley still break up (Angel still goes to L.A.) and admittedly, what Buffy’s relationship status in 2027 looks like remains undecided. Buffy stays on the Hellmouth, and indeed, is still on the Hellmouth, in 2027. By then it’s a lot calmer and more controlled than her High School and college days. Buffy never died defeating Glory, and the First never tried to destroy the Slayer Line.

Wesley never gets fired, stays Faith’s watcher, and eventually he works out a fairly solid rapport and Watcher-slayer relationship with Faith, albeit not one remotely like what he’d been trained to expect. He is Alicia’s ‘Uncle Wesley’ he’s the reason Alicia has the bad habit of drinking tea. He goes to L.A. with Faith when she gets her slayer dreams, but not before, and never really joins ‘Team Angel’ formally. (he’s on Team Faith, which works with Team Angel a lot, but they are separate) His relationship status remains undecided.

Angel went to L.A. and meets up with Doyle, who doesn’t die against the Scourge. Harriet Abrahams (formerly Harriet Doyle), Doyle’s ethnodemonologist ex, also joins up with Angel to help him on the demon front, and she and Doyle eventually reconnect and get back together.

Kate Lockley and Angel manage a better working partnership, and after one too many instance of police procedure getting in the way of solving/fighting supernatural crime, Kate Lockley quits the police and forms Lockley Investigations as a PI firm, which Angel nominally becomes an employee of (Angel Investigations was never formed in this AU) as useful cover for his activities. Eventually, Kate and Angel get together. No ‘perfect happiness’.

Darla still comes back, and Angel still goes overboard because of her. She is still turned into a vampire, Angel sleeps with her. I’m torn on if she gets ensouled at some point. Darla ends up skipping town on Angel regardless, only coming back when she is 9 months pregnant. In the end, she gives her life for her daughter,  who is named Kathryn after Angel’s baby sister (much as canon Connor was named for Angel’s dad). Kate ends up formally adoping Kathryn when the girl is two (by that point she was already ‘mommy’ to the girl) since Angel still kind of doesn’t exist, legally speaking.

Gunn and Fred still join Team Angel, more or less as they did in canon, and they get together, eventually having a daughter, Iris Alonna Gunn

Kathryn eventually moves to Seattle after graduating college to become a Champion and Supernatural PI there - but a run in with an Evil Cult will see her come to UC Berkely. 

Though not for lack of trying on Holtz’s part, Kathryn doesn’t get kidnapped (not for long anyway) and doesn’t go to a Hell Dimension. She is raised in L.A. alongside (in time) Alicia and Iris, viewing both as little sisters/cousins (and she saw Daniel and JJ a lot growing up too, since there were a lot of visits between all the extended Angel and Scooby Gangs over the years)

Talia McDermott (Alicia’s Roommate), Jacobo “Jack” Rosado (Initially Daniel’s Boyfriend) and Dr. Carter Williams (an ethnodemonologist who worked with Kathryn in Seattle) are also characters in the storyline’s centered on Alicia’s adventures at UC Berkeley.

The glib answer to this question is that I’m a queer woman myself, of course I write/read female characters and especially romance between them. I’ve gravitated to stories about girls my whole life, because I was an outlandishly femme little girl and a literary misandrist to boot. I didn’t have many male friends (still don’t, honestly) and I didn’t like many “boy” things and I honestly didn’t care much for most of the boys I knew personally, so I wasn’t interested in “boy” books mostly by default. I’d read them for class sometimes and just get bored out of my mind. The first book about a boy that I voluntarily remember reading for fun was Harry Potter, and that was actually only because of an extenuating circumstance where it as the only thing I had to do and I was bored, and I damn sure wouldn’t have kept going with it if it hadn’t been for Hermione. I never wrote stories about boys as a kid because so many people were already doing that, and boys just weren’t as interesting. (I come from the Sailor Moon school of thought: 1-2 male protagonists are all you need, even in a group of 10+ people [or in that case cats].)

That’s still more the rule than the exception for me, especially as far as fic is concerned. There are guys I like writing (my beloved asshole Eric Northman, for example) but I don’t think I’ve ever written a story that wasn’t at least mostly about girls. And in fandom, that’s honestly mostly because - let’s face it, male characters get 1000x more attention and f/f relationships are so underplayed it makes me scream. (In the AO3 division of my pet fandom of the moment, MCU, there are 72752 m/m fics, 55251 f/m fics, and... 9150 f/f fics. Nearly half the fics in the fandom are m/m, while f/f is about 5% of the fandom. [Additionally, there’s only one POC character in the 10 most popular m/m pairings, whose relationship is one of exactly four I consider canonically viable and also potentially healthy, and the third most popular is two white male characters who exchange all of two sentences’ worth of dialogue. Once. There are two WOC in the f/f pairings, which isn’t much better but considering one of them ranks in at #2 whereas the MOC is #9 on the list it’s something, and every single relationship is potentially healthy, while eight of them are explicitly canonically viable.)

So the answer here is, I mostly write and read female characters and femslash relationships because it’s what’s most relevant to my interests but also because a lot of the time I feel like if I don’t, nobody will. (I’ve also written in a majority of the popular f/f relationship tags, while I’ve written in a whole two of the popular m/m ones.) I’m consistently unsatisfied with how little there is to read for what I’m into (healthy f/f relationships with a variety of variables, including elaborate AUs an pleasantly kinky sex) so I write it myself. My wife and I write together to fill this need. It’s what we do. She actually was the very first one to post in the second most popular f/f relationship in the MCU fandom, and we’ve both been regular contributors. That tag is ours. That ship is ours. We go out of our way to create new f/f relationship tags that are just as random as some of the m/m we see but, in our opinions work much better and also to contribute quality to as many as possible; in the MCU alone we’ve created no less than 26 f/f relationship tags and contributed to 29 others (not counting crossover pairs or poly configurations). We do this because we like to, but also because nobody else (or very few people) are giving us the fic we want. We figure if we want it, at least some others might, and it seems to be that way (we have some fans, although we’ve also had a hilarious incident with someone angry that our fic was “too political” and also that it didn’t feature enough canon [white heterosexual] relationships). But mostly we do it because it’s important to us.

Additionally, we do go out of our way to highlight and make up for canonical and fandom treatment of POC characters and relationships they’re in. In contrast to the above MCU stats, we write less than 10 m/m relationships but only one of them is two white boys, while at least 22 of our multitude of f/f relationships feature WOC. We make sure characters’ races and ethnicities are not forgotten or erased (reattributing forgotten Jewishness, for example) and we will bend over backward to both celebrate the POC characters who deserve as much love as ur white favs of equal or lesser canonical screentime (Daisy Johnson, Claire Temple, etc.) and avenge the POC characters whose canons did them wrong (the AOS season 2 trifecta of Kara Palamas-Jiaying-Raina, etc., poor Tara Thornton in my solo stuff). We do this, again, because most of canon just doesn’t seem to give a shit and that’s really unfortunate, because it’s worth telling. These are good, important stories.
