I Saw the Phantom Proshot at the NYPL
Happy 36th birthday to Phantom's first preview on Broadway! I was going to save this post for the actual 36th, but I figure all of us need some more Phantom Broadway "original" content since the official Insta accounts are reminding us today that Phantom is no longer (though it should be) on Broadway. I'm going to post about what I saw, and I'll follow up on January 26 with all my answers!
Tumblr media
Some time ago, @or-what-you-will and I went to the NYPL's Theater on Film and Tape Archive, and viewed the archival pro shot of the Original Broadway Cast of Phantom of the Opera, filmed live on May 25, 1988. There is only one copy, and its purpose is artistic preservation (not commercial distribution--the library owns it). It was kept under lock and key during the show's run. All information about how to access the archive is on the website. I can't really tell you anything more besides what's out there because it will become identifying. You get set up in a room with monitors and can pause and rewind, although you can't touch the media.
This was not my first TOFT proshot, but it was the best-filmed. Some, there's a single camera just parked, or there's some generation loss because of when the tape was transferred to digital. This had absolutely vivid colors, a multi-camera shot, and brilliant and clear soundboard audio. I heard lyrics I have never heard (especially during Notes when everyone is singing over one another), the sound balancing was so good. It was as transformative as seeing it live.
These are all the notes we took while there (apologize if they can seem disjointed) More below the cut.
ACT 1 NOTES:
-Multicam shot
-amazing audio (soundboard), vivid colors
-Raoul/Barton is crying in his voice during the auction
-there’s a “voice” that sounds like a woman singing with the overture (maybe a theramin?) We jumped in shock at this. We've never heard this before, not even on soundboard.
-Sarah Brightman comes on stage during the Hannibal rehearsal, moving across the stage with Meg during “Rome not Roma”--so she dances in the front row during the Hannibal ballet
-Hannibal ballet then has 10 dancers and since Christine is in the whole thing, there is slightly different choreo
-there’s a synth under Meg’s “he’s there, the phantom of the opera”
-Firmin lights a cigarette and Andre (Future Phantom Cris Groenendaal) stops him right before “Think of Me’ which makes the “Defense de Fumer” on the back of the curtain make even more sense
-Think of Me Gala skirt is not as full (but of note, Carlotta’s Elissa costume is much more ornate than we have now or even at the end of Broadway)
-Raoul sings slightly different notes in Think of Me. Steve Barton goes down a few notes on “young and innocent” (it’s not belted) and is clearly wistful.
-The think of me cadenza is absolutely effortless
-The “Bravi, Bravi” is haunting and perfectly sound balanced!
-Meg can actually sing and the Angel of Music harmonies work
-Raoul (Steve Barton) is nervous before going into the dressing room. He taps his fingers on the banister and takes a deep breath before going in
-He’s also nervous inside the dressing room–you can see him going from seeing an old friend to suddenly having feelings, being attracted to her. When he’s standing behind her he has a slight moment when he nearly touches a lock of her hair.
-Raoul is wearing a ring on his right hand (signet?)
-Steve Barton says MY Little Lotte
-Christine (Brightman) is excited about meeting the Angel of music and has a wanting and longing in “Enter at LAST master” (in a way that Lily Kerhoas does now and we haven’t had many Christines who do this)
-The picture is VERY CLEAR and NO WASHOUT when we see Michael Crawford appear in the mirror for Phantom’s entrance. You see everything
-When the door opens for Raoul to the dressing room after they go through the mirror, it opens slowly (vs banging open). It’s the same tempo that Phantom moves to take Christine through the mirror
-1925 Phantom silhouette vibes at the first “sing for me”
-Not a particularly aggressive cape twirl, but def a twirl.
-They get VERY close on “turn your face away”, almost kiss (like, Russians, Panaro/Joseph close)
- he has a nice portcullis sprawl but she does not press against him, there is visible space between them the entire time
-”Caress” and “hear it, feel it” are explicitly seductive, the former in how it’s sung, the latter because he self-caresses on “feel it”
-the “Touch me” in touch me/trust me is half sung/half spoken order, she strokes her hand over the mask and he does not pull away
-He does have a little panic when she faints and he covers her with the cloak. He’s holding her hair when he sings to her there
-At the unmasking, MC holds for a brief moment before covering his face with his hand so the audience gets a peek of the deformity (before “damn you”)
-Vixen not viper
-Crawls on knees, not stomach. We get…lots of crying and whimpering
-Christine sees his face a lot during this sequence. MC lowers his hand as soon as he’s on her side of the stage from “secretly dreams of beauty” to “Oh Christine”, when he turns away–but she is looking at him the entire time. MC is angled right by a mirror shard so we can see a bit of the deformity reflected back
-Right before “come we must return”, MC is about to cup her face with both his hands before changing his mind–she starts to reach for him as well.
-His Mandarin robe is much longer than we have now (ankle length vs calf length)
-This Giry has witch vibes
-Steve Barton is playing eager puppy Raoul and it shows even though he looks older (Barton was 35 at the time)
-The sound balancing is so good that you can hear lines you don’t normally hear during Notes 1 and Prima Donna–including the Managers thinking that Christine has just been off with Raoul all night.
-Sarah Brightman does a different pose on the bed as the pageboy during Il Muto. She crosses her legs vs putting her hands on her hips.
-Firmin yells “the role of Christine Daae” to the proscenium, clearly directed at Phantom
-Barton Raoul’s “There is no Phantom of the Opera” comes off more as “Christine this is just some dude” vs “he doesn’t exist at all.”
-Raoul loves Christine so much. He strokes her hair gently to comfort her right before “No more talk of darkness”--his eyes are soft and he’s genuinely caring and concerned (vs trying to be a hero)
-”All I ask is for one love one lifetime”--different lyrics, she does it twice (This is on soundboards from the time)
-Raoul puts his face to Christine’s hands at the proposal.
-Christine is clearly kissing his cheek right next to his mouth during the kiss (the final lair kiss is a real kiss)
-Christine’s “I must go” is not as playful as we often see it later. She really is trying to go.
-Raoul is nervous at “Christine, I love you”--he lowers his head for a moment worried that he said something wrong. He’s excited when she replies “order your fine horses”
-AIAOY Reprise: Michael Crawford is partially slumped over the angel, he’s holding hands with it to the audience’s right, and arm is slumped over on the left. We get a lot of anguished weeping, and little distressed moans as Christine and Raoul sing, there is rocking and head shaking and then covering his ears. It’s a HUGE difference then when he stands up fully for “You will curse” (he does this again during final lair between “unfeeling scrap of clothing” and “pity comes too late)
-He also roars before standing
-The Phantom laugh/cackle continues well into the chandelier drop into intermission at the light cut out for about 15 seconds.
Act II
-Carlotta masquerade costume has no mesh in the skirt–it’s much more of a see-through skeleton crinoline, so the feature is the purple tights
-Not surprising since Sarah Brightman is a dancer, but Christine does the proper choreography during Masquerade--she's the center of attention. Barton also does quite a bit of dancing.
-There’s an organ (almost like a circus organ) underlying the finale during masquerade
-Red Death double doesn’t run down the stairs, he stays at the top
-Giry/Raoul exchange after masquerade–both holding the lantern and super closeup
-Reyer is clearly gay–coded. Some voice and hand gestures during Sitzprobe
-Wishing–only one “help me say goodbye” (when did the second one get added?)
-”Far-reaching” gaze, Wandering Child is a duet
-Piangi says “conquest” is assured (at some point, this became “congress”)
-Michael Crawford imitates Piangi until “past the point…”
-Sarah as Christine is listening intently to Phantom’s voice and immediately noticed something is off–she doesn’t figure it out right away but she notices something. She is suspicious the entire time. It's not clear when she knows for certain.
-Christine never flees from him, during the first caresses, he hovers over her body, she turns to kiss him, he turns away, her hand lingers on her back, before she gets up to sing her solo part away from the table
-Michael Crawford’s hands are in in his crotch when Christine’s singing on the other side of the stage (“you have come here”)--he’s moving his palms in his lap the whole time, his hands are shaking, we only get glimpses of him, most of this part it’s focused on her
-There is none of the arm waving circling while their hands are held, she takes his hands, he switches his grip to hold one of hers, and they keep them on him
-She figures it out when she reaches down–she’s holding his hands above him and she pushes her left (our right) hand down and he pulls and she notices something–we can only see to his upper waist but her hand disappears and her expression changes, it’s implied he has an erection
-she doesn’t ever feel the mask, either accidentally or on purpose
-She doesn’t actually ever try to escape. It’s not the current West End or the past blocking–but more accurate in that she is aware of the situation and plays along. She keeps going with the blocking
-they both get up and keep singing, neither drags the other to the centre, they move together and keep singing
-The last “return”--he sings it at the unhooding, she doesn’t
-”Say you’ll share with me”--he is really pleading and almost crying on “say you want me”
-The managers don’t come out to try to usher her offstage, she doesn’t signal to them to stay
-When Phantom gives her the ring, she takes it, but doesn’t put it on–she just holds it
-He doesn’t scream at the unmasking, he just looks shocked and sad
-Ratcatcher order is different–it’s after Raoul and Giry’s first lines, that’s the indication that Giry needs to turn around, Giry screams
-Phantom is crying at “flesh” and through “unfeeling scrap of clothing”, he’s also hunched over through this sequence, and then stands to his full height at “Pity comes too late.”
-Phantom makes a big show of raising the portcullis, hands fully raised
-Raoul swats at Erik with one hand (the other is still on the noose) when Phantom grabs Christine on “start a new life”
-Phantom is probably the “minimum” amount of rough as we see Phantoms be with Christine in this sequence, as in, he’s definitely scary and menacing but he’s not harming her. He does grab her and spin her around on “start a new life with me.” There are a few wrist grabs (which is book accurate). He’s realizing more that his plan is absolutely crumbling. We get some shots of him on the organ looking panicked.
-Phantom makes a low growling noise before “you try my patience”, which is delivered quickly and almost casually. It is not menacing as some later Phantoms do.
-”Pitiful creature”..MC’s hand is subtly shaking by his side
-The kiss: the 1st one MC stands with “claw hands” at his side, on the second one, the “claw hands” start shaking
-MC hunches over after he burns the noose
-He stands over the monkey, conducting it with one hand, he is mimicking the symbol clashes, he doesn’t touch it or cover its face
-When Christine returns the ring, his hand shakes as he takes it, he’s hunched over again.
-She does seem conflicted about leaving, but she doesn’t press her hand back around his, she holds out the ring and his hand shakes as she takes it. She doesn’t linger very long.
-He says a second “I love you” after she’s gone.
-He’s about to say it a third time, he says “I love…” and then see the veil, and grabs it and screams into it, and then turns and sees the boat leaving
-He sobs and keens a lot
-Raoul bends in the boat to caress Christine’s face on “say the word”)--this is halfway across the stage as opposed to during the stage right exit.
-Deliberately cracks voice on the "can" in “you alone can make”
-MC Cradling the veil like a baby at the very end

a cool idea for a blurb would be to see the two of them dealing with the lack of attention/jealousy they had towards Liana when she was dating that guy Jake
ps: the best of all is that probably at that time they still didn't really know how they felt about her, so even they didn't understand why they were so bothered by the fact that she had a boyfriend 🤭
I love it sooo much they are soo petty and mean it's WILD
Tumblr media
"Have you spoken with Sarah recently? Liana hasn't come at all since Patrick and I arrived," Art asked his mother casually. Both woke up before everyone else and decided to have coffee together. He tried to make it sound as if it didn't really interest him. As if it wasn't strange that Liana hadn't contacted him for four days, even though they were only two blocks apart.
"Oh yes, I asked her why Liana isn't here at all because she hardly came to visit before, and we usually meet a bit, but she's busy with her new boyfriend," Christine replied, not taking her eyes off her son. Art swallowed and his eyes widened, unable to hide his surprise.
"What boyfriend?" He almost chuckled at the idea. "Someone she studies with at school, but don't worry, I'm sure she'll come on Saturday for your birthday. It's a tradition," she smiled at him, noticing the small crease between his brows and wondering if he even understood why this news bothered him. "I'm not worried. Just surprised," he tried to dismiss it.
When he returned to the room, he woke up Patrick. He shook him so hard that Patrick nearly fell out of bed in response. "What's wrong with you?" he muttered, trying to open his eyes calmly. "Liana has a boyfriend!" Art said dramatically, seeing Patrick wake up in an instant, almost jumping out of bed himself.
"No way." Patrick felt his heart pounding. She would have told him. She would have told him if she had a boyfriend. "My mom just told me. That's why she hasn't come to visit yet," Art's jaw moved slightly uncontrollably as he paced the room, unable to calm down. Patrick rolled his eyes because Art's reaction was ridiculous. "There's no way she has a boyfriend. You know Liana. She's too quiet for a boyfriend. She's too good of a girl," Patrick said, not knowing who he was trying to convince, Art or himself. He couldn't believe this was happening to him; he comes once a year, and Liana doesn't care because of some random guy?
"What's his name?" Patrick asked. "I don't know, why?" Art returned, rolling his eyes. "To look him up on Facebook, duh," Patrick smacked his forehead as if he was an idiot. He didn't have time to explain everything to him. They needed to figure out who Liana was hanging out with instead of hanging out with them. Instead of eating ice cream with them. Instead of lying on an inflatable mattress in Art's pool. "She'll come on Saturday, ask her then." Art rolled his eyes again. He lay down on the bed and bounced a tennis ball, trying to organize his thoughts. It didn't bother him at all. She can do whatever she wants. She wants to play family with some loser from her school? That's her right. She wants not to see them all summer for that? She can do whatever she wants. It didn't bother him. At all.
Turns out it did bother him. Because they came together on Saturday. And if you ask Art, he would say it's rude. Because it's his birthday, and he didn't invite her ugly boyfriend. He doesn't know her boyfriend, who made no effort to introduce himself. He also knows that Patrick thinks the same thing. Art also realized that Patrick and Liana talk on the phone and overall, his birthday was completely ruined. He doesn't understand why it bothers him so much. It shouldn't bother him. He comforts himself with the fact that it definitely bothers Patrick. That he's not crazy. That it's reasonable he doesn't like Liana's boyfriend because, well... Liana should have a nicer boyfriend. One who appreciates who has been her best friend all her life (so he decided. Liana would probably say otherwise).
Patrick considered murdering Jake. Assassinating him. He thought about drowning him in the pool. He tried to find flaws in him all evening and couldn't. The main flaw was that he clung to Liana's hand like a leech. Not letting her move away from him. Possessive bastard. Why does she need such obsessive behavior around her?
As usual, Liana and her parents stayed after everyone left, causing Liana to go to the guest house, where Patrick and Art usually hung out when Patrick arrived, and they wanted to smoke. "What's up?" she asked with a wide smile, happy to have a moment to say hello to Patrick properly. She wouldn't say it out loud, but she could even tolerate Art's presence now. She missed him a bit too. "Whoa, it's not a bird, it's not a plane, it's Liana Levy," Patrick tried to be amused, but he was angry at her. "In the flesh," she sat down, unaware that neither of them was in their usual mood. "Your boyfriend seems charming..." Patrick said, trying to keep it light. "Why are you lying to her?" Art said sharply, looking at her with a piercing gaze.
"Excuse me?" she replied, raising an eyebrow. "He kissed you in front of your dad, and I heard what your dad thought about it," Art lied. It was a white lie in his eyes because he knew what her dad thought about it. Unlike the little shit she was dating, he really knew her dad.
"What is your problem?" she asked. "There's no problem, Liana, you found new friends, so why are you here?" Art stood up. "You coming?" he asked Patrick, who was in shock. Liana was also in shock. Art had never talked to her like this. Even when they were little kids and fought, it was always with a tone of amusement and words they could easily take back.
Art was trying to hurt her. Art was trying to make her feel what she made him feel that evening when he found out she was talking to Patrick on the phone occasionally, that she had a boyfriend, that she preferred to be in touch with everyone but, well...him. "In a bit..." Patrick replied, swallowing.
While Art didn't understand why he was reacting the way he was, Patrick understood perfectly. They both felt in jail right now. They both felt like Liana cut them off from receiving attention for a complete stranger who allowed himself to kiss her in front of her dad. Who behaves like that?! for God's sake. "What's his deal? Why is he more of an idiot than usual?" she asked, furrowing her brows as Art walked away from them. "His birthday didn't go as planned..." Patrick replied, trying to maintain his usual composure. Indifference with a touch of humor. That's what Liana liked about him; he was easygoing and nice. He wouldn't lose that over her without a visible reason. "He should take the stick out of his ass, and maybe it would go as planned," she said louder, hoping Art would hear.
"How are you, Li? I haven’t seen you at all since I got here," Patrick tried to change the subject, giving her a light smack on the shoulder, trying to make her feel a bit guilty. "I'm sorry. With all the arrangements for Stanford and Jake, I just haven't found time to say hi," she smiled, a genuine smile. "Hi," he said, keeping a sincere smile. Truly happy to see her. Really wanting her to stay a bit longer. "Hi, how’s your summer?" she replied. "Not as good as yours, that's for sure," he said with a smirk on his face. "Oh, fuck off," she rolled her eyes.
"No, seriously. You have a boyfriend now. You’re all serious and mature," Patrick continued. "What's his name?" he asked as if he didn't know. "Jake. His name is Jake. Can you leave him alone?" she started to lose patience with the two boys she was used to spending every summer with, but this time they were acting terribly. "He has a very impressive smile, I see what you find in him," he said. Patrick hated his smile. He smiled too much and it looked insincere. "Thanks, I'll make sure he adds a line about his smile to his resume," she rolled her eyes and stood up, officially done with this conversation. "Also tell him that the polite thing to do is to say hello to the birthday boy," Patrick said, knowing he sounded petty. "I didn't know you had a birthday, Pat. I'll remember for next year." She started to walk away from him, and he didn't try to stop her. Feeling his summer slipping away and ruined even before her and Art's move to Stanford.
"Aren't you going to apologize?" she asked Art, who just sat cross-legged by the pool. "For what?" he asked, slowly shifting his gaze to her. "For being a jerk, for instance?" she replied. Not knowing why it bothered her so much and why she was reacting like this to these stupid boys. "Liana, you brought a complete stranger to my birthday and ignored me all evening. Now you care about how I behave? By the way, stop calling my best friend for no reason, it's pathetic," he looked at her with a raised eyebrow, not looking away for a moment. Shooting words without thinking. "I didn't ignore you all even-" she started, seeing his gaze darken. "You know what? Go to hell, Art. Really." She rolled her eyes. "Great, at least there I won't see your face." he retorted, not looking away. "Wow, Art. Happy birthday. You’re an asshole, and I hope that for your birthday, you choke on cake to death, and I’ll have the chance to write that on your grave." She walked away from him too, just wanting to get home.
A week later, she broke up with Jake. She didn’t talk to Patrick and Art until the end of the summer, no matter how much they tried to get in touch. She decided to forgive them only two weeks into the school year at Stanford when she had no choice and felt lonely.
Rebecca once told her that boys will be boys, Right?
Send me more requests, it's really fun to write those. anything you wish to fiil the gap about my fav trio is more than welcome in my inbox <3

Christine’s Malpractice Case
Every year, there are thousands of medical malpractice cases reported in the United States. Ranging from surgical or procedural errors, to misdiagnosis, to anesthesia errors, and many other possible factors not listed. We all have a certain level of trust in medical professionals because of their many years of training and education. However, these professionals are people too, and are prone to making mistakes from time to time. Unfortunately when medical professionals make a mistake, it can have major consequences for their patient- leading to further injury, disability, or even death. Sadly, one such case took place at our hospital recently.
The patient was Christine Rossi. She was 47 years old and stood at only 5 feet tall, but her big personality made up for her lack of height. She had a pleasantly plump figure, beautiful brown eyes, shoulder length brown hair, was olive skinned since she was of Italian descent, and always had a fresh mani+pedi. She looked good for her age since she never had kids, and she was never married- but definitely married to her career as a medical malpractice attorney.
Christine’s case began when she was brought into our emergency department one evening straight from her office. She was wheeled into trauma 1 sitting up on the gurney, stripped down to just her bra and underwear. She was wearing an oxygen mask, had EKG electrodes all over her chest, and had IVs going in both arms. “hi, I’m Dr Lindsay. Can you tell me what’s wrong?” Dr Lindsay, the ER attending from that evening asked Christine in a calm, inviting tone. Christine was gasping for air and had one hand on her chest. Her eyes were absolutely bugging out at times, and she was visibly uncomfortable. “my chest…” Christine utters to Lindsay. “your chest hurts? How long has it been hurting you?” Dr Lindsay asks in response. “since yesterday… but it got worse- a lot worse just now…” Christine tells Dr Lindsay.
On the heart monitors, Dr Lindsay saw that Christine was tachycardic, hypotensive, and had an abnormal EKG. The EKG showed unifocal PVCs with ST elevation. The doctor ordered some blood tests: a CBC, BMP, tox screen, and a stat cardiac enzyme test. An echocardiogram and chest x ray were also ordered while the blood was being drawn for the labs.
While the blood samples were sent off to the lab, the chest x ray was performed first. The only thing that was abnormal was some swelling and irritation in both lungs. This can be caused in part by Christine’s rapid, labored breathing, but it can also be associated with blood clots in the lungs, heart attacks, or fluid buildup in the lungs (for example, from pneumonia, covid, and sometimes severe bronchitis). The chest x ray definitely provided some good information, but it didn’t give Dr Lindsay the whole picture, so an echocardiogram was ordered. The echo showed right ventricular hypertrophy. Basically, the right side of her heart was enlarged and working much harder than it should. With the stat cardiac enzyme lab still pending, a dose of nitro was given for chest pain, and cardiology was called for consultation.
The two members of our cardio team to arrive were Dr Rachel, one of our cardiothoracic surgeons, and her cardio resident Dr Sarah. “hey guys, I appreciate you coming down. I think she’s having an acute STEMI and needs the cath lab, just waiting on the cardiac enzyme test to come back to confirm. What do you think?” Dr Lindsay says to the 2 cardio doctors. Dr Sarah looks at Dr Rachel, waiting for her to do the talking. “don’t look at me! What do you think of Dr Lindsay’s assessment?” Dr Rachel told Sarah, trying to get her resident to take some initiative. “I um… I agree.” The resident replies hesitantly. “why do you agree? Go on!” Dr Rachel tells Sarah. “well… um… the EKG shows ST elevation. And uh…. The patient has angina pectoris and shortness of breath.” The resident replies, nervously, and without confidence.
Nurse Nancy walks into the room with a few pieces of paper. “labs are back.” She says, handing the papers to Dr Lindsay. “Cardiac enzymes are high. This is definitely a STEMI.” Dr Lindsay says thinking out loud. “ok, let’s get her to the cath lab. We need to start a central line and get a stent in her.” Dr Rachel called out to the rest of the ER team. “what… what’s going on?” a nervous Christine asked, still breathing heavily. “you’re having a heart attack and we have to put a stent in, ok?’” Dr Lindsay tells the nervous lawyer. “a heart attack?!” Christine asks in response, surprised at what she’s heard. “am I going to die?!” Christine continued. “you’re in great hands! We’ve seen plenty of heart attacks like this. We’re going to place a stent, keep you here for a day or two, and you should be good to go.” Dr Lindsay replies with relative confidence, oblivious to the fact of what was to come. “Can you call my mom? I’m scared…” Christine asks Lindsay, still short of breath, visibly in pain from the crushing pressure she felt in her chest. “of course! We’ll have one of the nurses reach out to her, ok?” Lindsay replies, reassuring.
Over the following few minutes, Christine is taken up to the cardiac catheterization lab. She’s laid flat on the table and her bra is removed, allowing her large, D cup breasts to spill out. “alright Christine, our resident Dr Sarah will place the line and the stent. We’ll be getting started shortly.” Dr Rachel tells the nervous attorney. “the resident? I don’t want her to practice on me…” Christine protests, having a gut feeling against having the resident perform the catheterization and stent placement. “don’t worry ma’am, me and Dr Lindsay have done these plenty of times. Sarah will have plenty of adult supervision!” Dr Rachel tells Christine, attempting to add a little comedic relief to the urgent situation. Christine still had a bad feeling about it, but ultimately agreed to let Sarah perform the procedure.
The upper right portion of Christine’s chest was splashed with betadine to sterilize the area. The resident identifies the superior midpoint of the clavicle, and moves down a few centimeters. This is the location of the subclavian vein, so it’s important that the correct location be identified in the early stages of the procedure. Next, a local anesthetic is injected into Christine’s chest to numb the skin and some of the underlying tissues. She winced in pain, feeling a pinch and a burn from the injection. It normally takes 45-60 seconds for the local anesthetic to numb the area effectively, so in the meantime, an ultrasound was set up. This is to further confirm the location of the subclavian vein, and to follow the catheter’s path once placed. Next, a hollow needle was advanced through the skin. Christine could feel the pressure of the needle being inserted, but no pain. The resident Sarah advanced the needle slowly into the beautiful attorney’s chest, looking at the ultrasound monitor. Eventually, the needle was in the correct depth and blood was aspirated. The needle was held in place for a moment while the blunt guide wire was maneuvered through the needle and into the subclavian vein. While inserting the guide wire, Sarah pulled it out and inserted it again quickly, unnoticed by Rachel or Lindsay. However, everything seemed fine at the time. But in that moment, unbeknownst to everyone, Sarah introduced an air bubble into the central line, which would now become a ticking time bomb.
Eventually, the guide wire and catheter were sent to the correct location, and the occluded coronary artery was identified. A small stent was navigated into the central line and carefully and methodically navigated to the correct location. Once the stent was in place, it was placed and opened, restoring blood flow to the previously blocked artery. After confirming the placement of the stent via ultrasound and x ray, the guide wire was removed and a port was left in the initial site to leave the central line open for the duration of Christine’s hospital stay.
After the procedure was completed, Christine was brought back to an exam room in the ER to wait until a bed opened up in the recovery area. “how’re you feeling?” Dr Lindsay asked. “I definitely notice a difference. Thank you…” Christine replied, no longer breathing heavily, and seemed a lot more calm than earlier. “look who’s here!” nurse Nancy says excited, bringing Christine’s 70 year old mother Marie into the room. Marie hurries over to the bed as fast as her 70 year old body can, and gives her daughter a hug and a kiss. “How are you doing sweetie? They said you had a heart attack!” the concerned mother asks. “I’m doing a lot better mom! Thanks for coming.” She replies, with a smile on her face. “we’ll leave you two alone. It’s been quite a day, right?” Dr Lindsay said, exiting the room with nurse Nancy.
Approximately 2 hours go by. “something’s wrong! Come in, quick!” 70 year old Marie shouts to the ER team while scurrying out of the exam room, visibly worried. Dr Lindsay, nurse Heather, and nurse Nancy head into the room. The heart monitors are chirping loudly, showing that Christine is severely hypotensive and tachycardic. Christine’s eyes are shut, but she’s groaning. “christine? What’s wrong?” Dr Lindsay asks, doing a gentle sternal rub, to which Christine doesn’t respond. “she passed out and won’t wake up! What happened?!” Marie asks in a panicked tone. “We’re gonna get to the bottom of this, ok?” Dr Lindsay replied. Heather shined a pen light into Christine’s eyes and both pupils were fixed and dilated. “Pupils blown Linds” Heather tells Lindsay, shaking her head. “lets get her intubated! Get cardio back down here NOW!” Lindsay shouts, wondering what the hell just happened. “christine? Can you squeeze my hand?” Lindsay asks, receiving no response. Marie was holding her daughter’s other hand and talking to her while chaos ensued. “get me a 7.0 ET tube!” Lindsay shouted.
The ET tube was being navigated carefully into the woman’s airway by Lindsay. “no pulse, starting compressions!” Heather called out. “damn it!” Lindsay said frustrated, finishing her rapid sequence intubation. Heather delivered deep, violent chest compressions on Christine while her 70 year old mother continued to hold her hand and stroke her hair. “she’s in PEA. Push epi and atropine. And where the hell’s cardio?!” Dr Lindsay shouted again, frustrated. While Lindsay ambu bagged and lead the code, Heather continued delivering CPR. Christine’s chest caved in, and her belly jiggled outwards. Her breasts shook and trembled from the residual force of the compressions being received.
Dr Rachel and Sarah enter the room and are shocked, seeing their seemingly stable patient having her chest pumped violently. “what happened?!” Rachel asked, stunned. “I figured you two might try to figure that out for us. Any ideas?” Lindsay replied sternly. “what do you mean? She was fine a little while ago!” Rachel replied. “sarah even did a good job on her first stent placement and central line.” Rachel continued. “wait! This was the first time she ever operated on someone?!” Marie shouted, overhearing what was said. “ma’am… believe me, she is absolutely qualified. And every procedure has its risks.” Rachel replied, jumping to Sarah’s immediate defense. “did she kill my baby girl?!” Marie asked, becoming teary eyed. “Ma’am, why don’t we bring you to a private waiting room while the doctors work.” Nurse Nancy suggested, trying to gently direct the 70 year old woman out of the room. “no no no, I’m not going anywhere! That’s my daughter!” Marie shouted, tears running down her face, still holding her daughter’s hand as her chest was being absolutely pummeled.
The heartbreaking scene was interrupted by Dr Lindsay announcing that v-fib was on the monitors. “alright, charge the paddles to 200.” Lindsay called out. Nancy gently made Marie back away from the table because of the impending shock. The paddles were pressed up against Marie’s bare chest, the ambu bag was temporarily detached, and the shock was delivered. Marie’s body flopped on the table while a KA-THUNK was heard in the room. “still no change, charge to 250.” Lindsay called out, shaking her head a bit. After a cycle of compressions, the next shock was delivered. The electricity ran through the 47 year old’s limp, lifeless body, causing her to twitch sharply in response. “no pulse, let’s hit her again at 300.” Lindsay responded, looking at the monitors. “please… save my baby! That’s my little girl!” Marie begged the team while living every parent’s worst nightmare. “paddles charged.” Heather called out. The defibs were placed back onto Christine’s chest, and shock #3 was promptly delivered. Christine’s feet kicked up above the table and slammed back down half a second later, showing off the deep, soft, silky, prominent wrinkles throughout the soles of her size 7 feet. “still nothing doc.” Heather said, having 2 fingers placed on Christine’s neck for a carotid pulse. The paddles were recharged, and in a moment’s notice, Christine was shocked at 360j. Her body reacted more violently to the stronger shock, with her eyes opening up halfway, staring blankly up above. “PEA, resuming compressions.” Dr Lindsay said, taking over CPR for Heather.
More meds were pushed while CPR went on. However, it took another 6 minutes to produce another shockable rhythm. Nonetheless, when v-fib appeared on the monitors again, the paddles were recharged to 360 joules, and Christine was shocked again. Marie’s lifeless body twitched abruptly in reaction to the shock while her eyes remained open, staring blankly at the ceiling above. After another cycle of chest compressions, the next shock was delivered, causing Christine’s toes to curl, once again showing off the deep, soft wrinkles in the soles of her feet. But unfortunately at that point, the code started to become more redundant: CPR, shock, meds, repeat.
It was now 24 minutes into the code and Christine was still in v-fib. Her complexion was a ghastly pale color, her skin was ice cold to the touch, and there was a huge bruise on the center of her chest from all the CPR she’d received. At that point it was Dr Rachel doing CPR while Lindsay still ran the code. Lindsay looked around the room, eventually making eye contact with Rachel. Lindsay shook her head at Rachel, knowing Christine wasn’t coming back. Dr Rachel backed off, and nurse Heather detached the ambu bag. “what’s going on? Why are you stopping?” Marie asked the team, still holding her daughter’s hand. “I’m so sorry ma’am…” Dr Lindsay said, before Marie interrupted, “no no no! Shock her again! Keep pounding her chest! There’s gotta be SOMETHING you can do, right?!” Dr Lindsay paused for a moment, then said “I’m so sorry ma’am. We did everything we could. Your daughter’s heart won’t restart, and her brain has been deprived of oxygen for so long.” Marie started to cry at the point, practically crumbling to the floor. “time of death, 8:45pm.” Dr Lindsay said, peeling her gloves off. “no no no!” Marie wept. Nurse Nancy scurried over to try and console the woman while Heather began basic postmortem care.
The monitors were switched off, the EKG electrodes were disconnected, and the ambu bag was detached. A toe tag was filled out and placed on the big toe of Christine’s left foot, dangling in front of her beautiful, wrinkly soles. Her body was covered up, but Heather lowered the blanket down to Christine’s shoulders so Marie could have as much time as she needed to grieve her daughter’s tragic passing.
Since the exact cause of Christine’s death was unknown, an autopsy was ordered. The results of said autopsy concluded that Christine died from an air embolism that traveled to her brain. Essentially, air was introduced in the central line by Sarah, and it eventually traveled to the brain and got stuck in the smaller, more delicate vessels there. With these findings in mind, Marie was able to sue the hospital for Malpractice and received a hefty settlement payment. It was an absolute tragedy that Marie witnessed the death of her own daughter, and it was also a bit ironic that a medical malpractice attorney died from medical malpractice.

The Blue Castle, Chapter 40
Aaaand, we’re back on Elm St. Symbolic rosebush is in bud (but not, at the moment, blossoming).
This description of the living room couldn’t be more different from the cabin: everything’s useless decoration: fussy, stuffy, and nonfunctional (the pitcher, the clock). The gaudy, nonworking clock particularly caught my attention in contrast to the jolly clock of the cabin.
I know Valancy’s too upset to let any Stirling nonsense bother her, but I’m still taking off for Amelia & Cousin Stickles not wanting her back. And another for “I don’t forgive you.” And one from Uncle Benjamin for rejoicing at Valancy’s misfortune/his perceived power over her.
Look, I don’t know 1920s Canadian law on divorce, but Uncle Benjamin’s line of questioning is precisely the sort of thing that would prevent her from being eligible for a divorce in England. I know we want her to stay with Barney, but at this exact moment Uncle Benjamin is gathering evidence to undermine Valancy’s stated goal (divorce so Barney can be free again), so he’s getting another -1.
Uncle Benjamin turning on Amelia and Christine ought to be delicious, but at this point I’m just sick of the whole family’s mercenary hypocrisy. I wish Valancy had gone back to Abel Gay’s instead.
“She did not even remind Valancy that her plight was the outcome of her own lack of daughterly respect and obedience.” Such forebearance!
It’s time for an updated scoreboard!
Mrs. Stirling: -50
Cousin Stickles: -18
Uncle Benjamin: -15
Aunt Wellington: -11
Uncle James: -11

Aunt Mildred: -1
Second Cousin Sarah Taylor: -1

I've noticed that the most famous christines have very similar features especially the quirky nose and eyes like rachel barrell, sierra, gina beck a little, etc... kinda like in the 80s and 90s when they would cast actresses that looked like sarah brightman. Did it became a requirement in the 2000s to play christine? to have a quirky side profile?
SCENE: Some auditioning room in Random City, USA. A casting director sits at a long desk; in front of him stands an eager young actress, slightly out of breath but exhilarated.
DIRECTOR: "Well I must say, Ms. Christine McChristinie, I am very impressed by your audition! Your voice is exquisite. Your acting is incredible. You bring a fresh new take to this 35-year-old role. Your chemistry with all your potential co-actors is off the charts. And you have ballet experience!"
EAGER YOUNG ACTRESS: "Thank you, thank you so much! Christine Daae has just been my dream role, I feel so lucky just to get the chance to try out for her."
D: "Yes, I can certainly see that. Well, before we get you signed for the role, I need you to do one last thing for me."
EYA: "Of course, anything!"
D: "Turn a bit to the right."
EYA: "Oh... o...kay?"
D: "Good. Now to the left."
EYA: "...."
D: "Mmm... yeah, sorry, it's not going to work."
EYA: "What?! What do you mean? You said I did wonderful!"
D: "Oh yes, sure, voice, acting, chemistry, all A plus... but you're missing that quirky side profile."
EYA: "The what?"
D: "Quirky side profile, pay attention. Right, see, your nose there? About an inch too long. And your cheeks? The shapely roundness is off by half an inch. And your eyes are just a touch too far apart. No, apologies, but we can't give you the role."
EYA: "I'm losing the role because of that?!"
D: "Yep, didn't you read the audition requirements? Quirky side profile, eyes like Rachel Barrell, Gina Beck, Sierra Boggess, etc., right there in print."
EYA: "Well, I - I demand to speak to someone! Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, or-"
D: "Lady, unless you are the walking, talking clone of Sarah Brightman herself, Sir Andy wants nothing to do with you."
EYA: "But I-"
D: "We're done here. NEXT!"

poto rewritten short stories 2/6: erik's very happy birthday
in honor of read an e-book week, i'll be sharing sneak peeks of the rewrite's first short story collection (which will be an e-book exclusive out this spring)! next up is eristine being quite suspicious... ;)
...
Erik sighed as he paced near his piano the next morning. The clock on the wall ticked to nine-fifteen.
"Lessons should be well underway by now," he noted. "Where do you think Christine is?"
Ayesha meowed and pawed at the door.
"Alright, I'll let you out," Erik said with a chuckle as he opened the door. "Be sure to look for Christine!" He sighed as Ayesha trotted down the pathway to the dreamery. "…Or not."
Just as Erik was about to close the door, he heard someone run across the wooden platform outside his house.
"Christine!" Erik exclaimed. "You're late!"
"I know. I'm terribly sorry," Christine apologized. "I was-" She pursed her lips. "I overslept."
Doesn't seem likely if that face is any indication. Erik thought as she stepped inside the house.
Christine acted odd throughout lessons. Her eyes wandered to the floor, she missed her cue to start singing and her voice often trailed off during long notes. Erik inquired about it a few times, but she just gave vague answers.
After lessons, Christine didn't show up at ballet practice. She usually sang for the second half of rehearsals, giving Madame Giry a break from playing the viola. Even stranger than Christine's disappearance was Meg being gone too!
They're definitely up to something, Erik thought. And I'm going to find out what.
...
It was mid-evening when Erik returned home. He had been observing Faust rehearsals…
And now he would be observing Christine. Spying on people as The Opera Ghost was perfectly fine, but spying on Christine as himself? That was unheard of!
It's an invasion of privacy, but I need to know why they're acting so strange! Erik thought.
He took a deep breath, hoped that Christine would be in her dressing room and switched on the mirror. He pressed the silver and white buttons on the control box so he could watch and hear without being seen or heard. Lo and behold, there Christine was with Meg! She was wrapping something… but what?
"What do you think his address is?" Meg asked. "Palais Garnier Water Cellar?"
"We're not mailing this, remember?" Christine reminded her.
"Oh, right!" Meg remembered before giggling.
They must have gotten Sarah Bernhardt's book! Erik thought, his heart lifting. They're acting strange because of my birthday!
"Azizam?"
Erik gasped and switched the mirror off. Nadir was standing in the doorway!

18+ MINORS AND THOSE WITHOUT AGE IN BIO DNI
requested by @onedirectionlovers2014
request: Well see I was Watching Ross's wedding with Emily and I thought, what if we change that and have Dan get married to somebody and he accidentally says the readers name instead but instead of the wedding happening, Dan walks away to find the reader instead. Like Dan knows it didn't work out with the reader because of how he used to be so he tried to be different for Sarah but realized at the altar as he's saying the vows that he's still in love with the reader
tags: @illiana-mystery, @eclecticwildflowers
Warnings: idk what to call it but Dan says the wrong name at the alter, swearing, yelling
“repeat after me please. I, Dan.” The priest said. Dan nodded and squeezed Sarah’s hands.
“I Dan.” He said.
“take thee Sarah.” The priest continued.
“Take thee (Y/N).” A collective gasp went up in the audience and my jaw dropped. Harry and Christine looked over at me as Dan turned to look at me. It was almost in slow motion as he dropped Sarah’s hands and she stared at him in shock. He brushed down the front of his tux before ducking his head, trying to hide the mumbled apology to Sarah and the priest.
“you should…” Harry whispered as Dan took off back up the aisle. I nodded and got up, quickly following him without anyone seeing. The audience had mostly converged on Sarah making it easy.
“(Y/N)!” Dan called in the foyer. “(Y/N)!” I ran into the room, stopping to look at Dan as he turned in a circle. “Come on! Please (Y/N)! I know you’re here!”
“I’m right here Dan.” He stopped and turned to look at me. “Dan, why did you…it didn’t work out between us…Sarah’s…” Dan shook his head and ran over to hug me.
“I know it didn’t work out between us. That’s on me.” He whispered into my hair.
“I’ll say that’s on you.” I muttered, digging my fingers into his jacket.
“When we broke up, I knew I fucked up. So when I started dating Sarah, I made sure not to make the mistakes I made with you. It was fine. It worked. But baby, there’s just something about her.” Dan pulled back to look at me.
“yeah? What?” I asked, stilling holding onto him like my life depended on it.
“she ain’t you.” He whispered before leaning in to kiss me. I hummed against his lips as I tugged him closer. “I still love you. I always have.” Dan whispered as he pressed his forehead against mine. “I’m so so sorry for everything I’ve put you through. Including…all that.” Dan waved his hand in the direction of the ceremony.
“I don’t care.” I laughed. “Although you should have seen the look on her face when you ran out.” Dan chuckled as he kissed me again.
“that I could care less about. I mean I feel bad. That must be heartbreaking to hear another persons name at your wedding and then be left at the alter.” Dan shrugged. “But right now all I can think about is the fact that it somehow ended up working out. At least a little bit.” I shook my head as I took his offered hand, sparing a glance at the door where I could hear voices getting louder just beyond it.
“they’re about to bust in here to scream at you fielding.” I teased slightly. “Harry and Christine can only do so much for you darling.” Dan shrugged as he kissed me. The doors burst open and Sarah’s family marched into the entryway.
“time to go!” Dan laughed as we took off running into the limo that was waiting for the happy couple.

Eric Albert Forman (born March 18, 1960), the Familial Lore...
He's the son of Reginald "Red" (born 1927) and Katherine "Kitty" (born 1931). He has one sister, Laurie (born 1958).
From his father's side, he's a mix of Irish and English. On his paternal grandfather Albert's side, his Irish ancestors fled from the potato famine. On his paternal grandmother Bernice's side, his Irish side was firmly for "home rule," and Bernice's parents left Ireland due to "political disagreements" (ie, her English father fell in love with her Irish mother). Here, the English side were protestant Northern Ireland colonists. And on Albert's side, his (young, he was literally a child) servant Irish father fell for an English student. So, lots of intermingling here, early on. :)
From his mother's side, he's all Swedish. Both sides came to Wisconsin around the same time, in the 1840s/50s, when Scandinavians settled in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Sigurdsons are a pillar of the community, whereas the Holms (Bea's family) are not. They're petty criminals, and the Sigurdsons take in Bea and her younger sister Eva (a Laurie type), much like the Formans took in Hyde.
******
Now, more on to the relatively recent stuff.
His Father's Side:
Eric's great-grandpa John (the Irish servant boy) lost his father when he was really young. John and Albert didn't get along, at all. John was far more of a pacifist, and disagreed with WWI. Albert literally ratted him out. John outlives Albert by a few years (the heart attacks run on Albert's mother's side of the family), and is around long enough to influence Eric. To sprinkle in the first seedlings of rebellion, where Eric questions the Vietnam War.
His grandparents:
Albert John Forman (1897-1963): Red's hardass father, and Eric's paternal grandfather. He's a WWI vet, scarred from the trenches with some obvious PTSD (back then, it was called shellshock). He's worked at the car plant, a Ford assembly line, for most of his life. He thinks college education is just for elitists who have nothing better to do than twiddle their thumbs and discuss some crazy theories, and encourages his children to go into the workforce instead of wasting time at school. Yet, he "wastes time" as an amateur photographer, and has his own dark room. Even when money is tight.
He dies when Eric is really young (the heart problems come from his mother, who also died of a heart attack at a relatively young age), and his father John (a bookstore owner, amateur photographer, and occasional librarian and writer) outlives him by several years. John makes far more of an impact on Eric's young mind, and the stories he hears about Albert are more horror stories than anything.
Bernice Ann Forman (nee Larson) (1898-1976): Red's mother, and Eric's paternal grandmother. She's a lot like Albert, but she's a touch softer. She was the one who first called Red "Red," for example. She loves fishing, boating, and sailing, as does Red; Albert was in the army, but Red ultimately chose the Navy.
His uncles:
John Patrick "Jerry" Forman (born 1925): Red's "perfect" older brother. He's a lot like Red, but he's far more socially adept. He's the chief of the Brookfield Police Department (a suburb of Milwaukee), and makes a lot more money than Red. He and his wife Evelyn have three daughters; Ellen, Christine, and Rachel. And they also had a son, John, who died young from leukemia.
Paul Lawrence Forman (born 1936): Red's younger brother. Unscarred from the perils of war and privileged for being part of the younger duo (who were treated less harshly, by comparison), Paul becomes an engineer. Like Red always wanted, but his father never let him become. He's married to his childhood sweetheart Bev, and they have one daughter, Sarah.
Martin "Marty" James Forman (born 1939): Red's youngest brother. He escaped from the stranglehold of the Forman family, but he's still battling with himself. He's gay, and for most of his life, he's still firmly in the closet. In the mid-1970s, his recent divorce from his wife Denise pushes him further back. Into denial, before finally coming to terms with himself in the early-mid 1980s. And accepting himself, even though most of the world will not.
His Mother's Side:
His maternal grandparents, Albert "Burt" (yes, there are two Alberts) and Beatrice "Bea" were never really in love. Burt lost his first wife to breast cancer, and he was still hurting when he married Bea, who is a manipulative control freak. When the writing's on the wall and divorce is in the air, Bea threatens that he'll never see the girls again. Bea yells, and when Burt can't find the personal happiness he desires, he drinks.
When the girls are old enough to not be mere pawns in Bea's games, they both almost always side with Burt. In turn, Burt almost always sides with his daughters, instead of his nasty wife.
Albert "Burt" Eric Sigurdson (1901-1978): Kitty's father, and Eric's grandfather. After his brother Oscar died in WWI, he was set to inherit the family farm. But he didn't want that life, and chose to become a teacher instead (and an amateur social worker, like his mother). He constantly houses local misfits, and although he is often quiet, he's more than willing to lend a helping hand.
His soulmate was definitely his first wife Leila, and not Bea, but his close "friend" and co-worker Iris is more of his soulmate than Bea will ever be. When Burt is quick to admit that he's in love with Iris and wants a divorce, Bea nips that in the bud. Fast.
Beatrice "Bea" Lorraine Sigurdson (nee Holm) (1904-1989): Kitty's mother, and Eric's grandmother. Her parents were petty criminals, making a ruckus for the hell of it, and although she didn't choose that life, she's still a horrible person. She constantly puts her daughters down, and tries to control the world around her. Maybe it's a result of having no control over her terrible, unruly childhood, but either way? She reeks of bitterness, and maybe Burt once felt bad for her, but she puts it on herself.
His uncle and aunt:
Oscar Albert Sigurdson (born 1922): Burt and Leila's son, Kitty's half-brother, and Penny's father. He's a scientist and chemist. He's rumored to have some really, really vague involvement with the Manhattan Project.
Paula Lorraine Sigurdson (born 1934): Burt and Bea's daughter, and Kitty's sister. She's Princess Margaret, and Kitty's Princess Elizabeth. Kitty's perfect, and Paula seems to be the loser of the bunch. In high school, she's in a turbulent on-off relationship with the "loser" Bradley brother Ronnie. Her first and only child Clark, born when she was sixteen, is put up for an open (ish) adoption, and a second pregnancy and a subsequent botched abortion render her infertile. Her luck improves when she moves to Indianapolis, after a long time of wallowing in Chicago (and continuing to have an on-off relationship with Ronnie).

Loki Friggason is the Keeper of the Lighthouse in Salt Rock Maine of Mar-vel County. He haws made a nice quite life free of the constant rejection by the adoptive father that never wanted him and the crushing break of past relationships. His last Love nearly broke him to where he closed of himself to new relationships. He is content to hide away in his village gathering the locals as family and friends who would never hurt him or his heart. That is until two Mysterious Brothers take to port and dock their boat called the Iron Man into the harbor. No one really knows why they settled here and opened up a crabbing business but it looks like they're here to stay. One of the brothers has taken a liking to the lighthouse keeper and could pose a threat to that peaceful life Loki has been living. On the other hand Loki see something in those brown eyes that speak of a guarded heart and painful past underneath the charm and smiles. Is it worth the risk for something more or will it lead to heart ache and despair

“I’m afraid you have lost me Mrs. Harkness.”
“That new fisherman Tony, that moved here five months ago. He’s been drawing the attention of almost every woman and even some men in town. He is a handsome piece of eye candy.” The older woman winked causing Wanda to roll her eyes.
“Yes Agnes so you have said. We’ll see you later I need to talk to Loki about next farmers market, we’re in charge of the stall placements.” Wanda hooked her arm with the Raven and pulled him into the store.

#JamesDonaldson On #MentalHealth – #Parents See Own Health Spiral As Their Kids’ #MentalIllnesses Worsen
Tumblr media
by Megan Craig, M.Sc. If you or someone you know may be experiencing a #mentalhealthcrisis, contact the #988Suicide&CrisisLifeline by dialing "#988," or the #CrisisTextLine by texting "HOME" to 741741. After her #teenage daughter attempted #suicide and began to cycle through emergency rooms and #mentalhealthprograms during the past three years, Sarah Delarosa noticed her own health also declined. She suffered from mini strokes and stomach bleeding, the mother of four in Corpus Christi, Texas, said. To make things worse, her daughter's failing behavioral and #mentalhealth caused Delarosa to miss hours from her job as a home health aide, losing out on income needed to support her family. "Access to help, when it's needed, it's not available," said Delarosa, about the #hopelessness she felt as she sought support for Amanda, 16, who has been diagnosed with #bipolardisorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Amanda has at times lashed out in anger or shattered light bulbs and used the broken glass to cut herself. Delarosa often feels overwhelmed, and she has noticed her youngest son acting out. "Now we have a whole family that needs help," she said. A national shortage of #mentalhealthcareproviders, and the search for affordable care, has exacerbated strain on parents, often the primary caregivers who maintain the health and well-being of their children. Their day-to-day struggle has led to its own health crisis, say #psychologists, researchers, and advocates for families. As #parents navigate the #mentalhealth care system's shortcomings, #stress can start to take a physical and #mentalhealth toll that disrupts their ability to continue providing care, said Christine Crawford, the associate medical director at the #NationalAllianceonMentalIllness, an advocacy group that helps families find care. #Parents pour their energy into helping their #kids, often at the expense of their own health, Crawford said. "When you are worrying about whether or not your #child is going to survive the day, you are constantly living on edge," she said. "Your fight-or-flight is constantly activated." And the number of parents in crisis is greater than it seems. Recent reports from the #CentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention, the surgeon general's office, and medical providers all show an alarming number of #kids in the U.S. are experiencing severe #mentalhealthchallenges. About 40% of U.S. #parents with #children younger than 18 say they are extremely or very worried their #children might struggle with #anxiety or #depression at some point, according to a January study from the Pew Research Center. Evidence-based therapies to address a child's #mentalhealth should include the #parents, say researchers and #pediatric #mentalhealthspecialists. But the focus on the adult caregivers and their anxiety and stress too often falls short. For example, parent-child interaction therapy coaches parents to manage their young child's #behavior to prevent more severe problems in the child later on. While this may help the #child, it doesn't directly support the parent's health. "I have so many parents sit across from me on the couch and cry," said Danielle Martinez, a #behavioralhealthspecialist at Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi. The hospital is creating peer support groups, to launch by the fall, for family members whose #children are under the facility's care. "They felt so alone, felt like bad parents, felt like giving up," Martinez said, "and then felt guilty for wanting to give up." When the parent's mental and physical health deteriorates, it complicates their ability to prevent the child's condition from getting worse, said Mary Ann McCabe, a member of the board of directors at the #AmericanPsychologicalAssociation, an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine, and a psychologist in independent clinical practice. Parents are a kid's most important resource and need to be a concern, she said. Delarosa said many residential treatment centers cited a shortage of providers in refusing to admit her daughter. Amanda, who is covered through Medicaid, would be on weeks-long waiting lists while she "spiraled out of control," running away from home and disappearing for days, said her mom. In April, Amanda was admitted to an inpatient residential treatment facility nearly 200 miles away, in San Marcos, Texas. With Amanda away, Delarosa said, she had a "chance to breathe," but the reprieve would be temporary. She wants to see a #therapist but hasn't had time amid the demands of caring for Amanda and her youngest #child, a son. Before Amanda left for treatment, her 7-year-old brother started cussing, throwing and breaking objects in the home, and saying things like he wished he weren’t alive, though his #behaviors settled down while his sister was away. Other #parents also said they are feeling the strain on their mental and physical health. "The #children are in crisis. But the families are also in crisis," said Robin Gurwitch, a professor in psychiatry and #behavioral sciences at Duke University. "They are struggling to figure out how best to help their #children in a system that doesn't come with a manual." Brandon Masters, a #middleschool principal in San Antonio, developed a rash on the back of his arms and neck last year that he says his #doctor told him was connected to #stress. Even though he is insured through his job, Masters estimates he paid about $22,000 last year on care for his #teenage son Braylon, who spent 60 days in residential treatment centers in Texas and California following a diagnosis of #bipolardisorder. Braylon spent an additional month in juvenile detention later in 2022 after he bit his dad and brandished a knife. So far this year, Braylon, now 17, has attempted #suicide twice, but Masters has been unable to find a residential treatment center he can afford and that will admit Braylon. "There is this huge wave of #anxiety that comes over me that makes it difficult to be around him," Masters said. Anne Grady's 20-year-old son has autism, severe #mooddisorder, developmental delays, and other conditions. For nearly 17 years he has been on a Texas waiting list to receive full-time care. Grady, who lives in a suburb of Austin, Texas, developed a tumor in her salivary glands and temporary facial paralysis, which added to the #stress she faced navigating care for her son. "It's mentally exhausting for families," Grady said. The lack of care is "punishing the #kids and punishing for families," she said. #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.  #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleFind out more about the work I do on my 501c3 non-profit foundationwebsite www.yourgiftoflife.org Order your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife: From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com Medicaid is the state-federal program that pays medical and other health-related bills for low-income and disabled people. Yet while many state Medicaid programs pay for family therapy and parenting programs, they don't address the #parent as an individual #patient affected by their child's health under a child's plan, said Elisabeth Burak, a senior fellow at Georgetown University's Center for Children and Families. #Parents who live in one of the 10 states that haven't expanded Medicaid, including Texas, face an additional challenge getting care for their own #mentalhealth. Still, states are starting to recognize that caregivers need more support. Many states allow Medicaid to cover services from certified family peer specialists or navigators, who have experience raising a #child with #mentalillness and additional training to guide other families. In July, California awarded money to support #parents as part of a #child #mentalhealth initiative. "The most important thing that we should give families is a sense of hope that things will get better," said Gurwitch. Instead, the lack of quality #mentalhealthcare services for #youth exacerbates their risk for illnesses. Without appropriate help, these conditions follow a #child — and their #parents — for years, she said. With Amanda returning home from the residential treatment program this month, Delarosa worries she won't be equipped to manage her daughter's bouts of #depression. "It's the same thing over and over, nonstop," Delarosa said. "I have driven myself crazy." When Grady's son turned 18, she acquired continued guardianship so she could continue arranging his care outside their home. "I love him more than anything in the world, but I can't protect him," she said. Masters, whose skin conditions have worsened, is just trying to get Braylon through his final year of #highschool, which starts this month. He's also renewing his search for a residential treatment center, because Braylon's negative #behaviors have escalated. "When they are born, you have all these dreams for your #kids," said Masters. Instead, health professionals who have cared for Braylon told Masters, he needs to be prepared to look after his son even after he finishes high #school. "No #parent wants to hear that," he said. Last night's dream: I don't remember. Lately, I've been so tired I don't record my dream right after waking up.
Where I went: Res, school - painting, prof studies, contemporary illustration and commentary
What I ate: I ate a piece of whole wheat bread before school. I also brought a coffee to school. Between prof studies and contemporary illust, I had 1 chicken ramen and 1 egg. For dinner, Carrie, Maddy, Sarah, and I had sushi and rose. Maybe it'll be a tradition to feast after a crazy Tuesday.
What I did: So, this night I only had 2 hours of sleep because I was trying to finish prof studies. And I was actually on time for painting. Today when we woke up it was funny lol. Because Carrie and I opened the door at the same time, but Carrie went back into her room, and so I went to the washroom. And after prepping my toothbrush, I told Carrie she could use the washroom and brushed my teeth on my bed. Then, I went off to painting, and I painted. I didn't do much - we had Jeffrey today and he was wearing a top hat. He looked pretty cool haha. And then, we had Lynn's class!!! We had our critique for the forest project. And I think I did okay! It looked really cute, like an animated show. I made a storyboard. And that group of girls that are friends with Ashley didn't do amazingly! Including that girl Joyce. Who said my painting looked funny. I will do well in my classes just in spite of her insulting my work. And Ashley not defending me and agreeing with her. And then, I talked to Lynn a bit, and Sarah and I went back to our rooms. I ate my late lunch and rushed off to Marco's class after. The class was pretty fun today. We had a discussion on the time podcast, and I was falling asleep. But after the break, we went to the library and played a game where we couldn't talk to anyone. And had to check out 2 books within the hour. I got a book called What They Don't Teach You in Film School, and a book about storyboarding. I want to go back and check out that book about animation from screenwriting to film, or something like that. I got to talk to Chantal and Christine! And I lowkey kept making eye contact with Chantelle throughout class. I can't believe this is my only class with her. After, Maddy and Sarah came over to have dinner! It was fun and the packaging looked very nice.
Media: What They Don't Teach You In Film School by Camille Landeau and Tiare White
Things I worked on: I read a book!
Grateful for: my friends!!
Closing thoughts: I'm so goddamn tired. I slept for two hours and I have been up for 17 hours.
