Merthur Astronaut Au: Merlin and Arthur are on a space ship heading out on a ten year mission. 

Arthur has Gwen but this has been his dream since he was young. She insisted she would be ok. He knew it broke her heart to see him leave and it broke his to go but he tells her not to wait on him. The guilt kills him a lot and he tries not to think about it, but he does. He can’t help but look out at the stars and feel the same wonder he’d felt as a child. 

Merlin didn’t think he’d miss anything going out to live w the rest of nothing. He’s always had the worst luck and the worst friends and he wants to disappear but he figures maybe ten years in the emptiness of space is close enough. The ache in his chest is different from Arthur’s. It’s the ache of having no one to miss, of having no recent memories to look on fondly. 

They drive each other crazy with not-quite-toothpaste food and get completely sick of tortillas and maybe sometimes they hear each other crying or singing or dreaming and maybe sometimes that leads to some hand drifting to find each other across the empty space between cots but in ten years it’s all over and they can go home. Wherever that is.
