John’s hero complex with Aaron

I feel there is going to be a development in Aaron and John’s relationship in terms of how he treats Aaron and why Aaron seems to be acting ‘out of character’.

John has a hero complex, there is no way the show is going to tell that story and not show how it affects a relationship. Someone with a hero complex may overextend themselves to help their partner and instead of creating an equal partnership, they create a parent-child dynamic. This can lead to the “hero” feeling unappreciated, burnt out, and resentful, while the partner may feel infantilized or suffocated, we’ve seen Aaron being driven to guilt because John gets insecure and often blames Aaron for it.

The hero/savior dynamic can create a power imbalance where one partner takes on a parental role, which is not conducive to a healthy romantic relationship. John seems to do that a lot with Aaron, telling him to ‘go home’ or to ‘shut up’ or telling him to ‘calm down’, it’s John taking control and giving Aaron orders and Aaron accepts it. This plays a part in control, and we’ve heard John say that he loves control, needing to feel in control.

The “hero” might feel responsible for solving their partner's problems or making them happy, which can lead to them neglecting their own needs and well-being. We know that John immedietly took control of the situation with Anthony right after Aaron told him about it as he thought he was helping/saving Aaron. He also feels like he can and is making Aaron happy by being with him.

A hero complex can stem from underlying trust issues, leading to difficulty trusting others' abilities or intentions. This shows with John’s obsession with Robert and trust issues he feels between Aaron and Robert and Aaron constantly having to reassure him. They also make their partner feel they have to be dependant on them. This is made known all those times where John has said “Aaron knows he’s always got me” “I make him happy” etc. This also counts for the “hero” needing to feel need/wanted by their partner. This is a big dynamic with John and Aaron.

If I’m correct, John feels like Aaron ‘owes’ him. For helping him hide Anthony’s body and for saving Aaron’s life that one time. But we’ve actively seen that possessiveness when John tells Aaron that he’s ‘never letting him go’, he also told Robert that he knows every inch of Aaron ‘what he enjoys, thinks, feels, who he likes and who he dislikes’ which Robert called creepy, because…it is.

I think overtime Aaron has grown to learn to stay quiet to keep John calm and not so angry. The first time we ever saw John lose it with Aaron was outside the pub when they were arguing over a car because of Anthony and John made Aaron jump when he shouted at him to shut up and proceeded to tell Aaron to ‘get a grip’ which can come across as belittling or dismissive. Something else people with a saviour complex sometimes tends to do, that’s an example of narcissistic abuse. Aaron sits quietly and acts like he just agrees with John to keep him happy. The difference in example is when in November 2024, Aaron defended Robert when John badmouthed him, this was before the Anthony stuff started. In tonights episode he stays quiet when John does it again. When John told Aaron to ‘go home’ when Aaron mentions Robert in the shop, Aaron just does it. No arguement, no pushback, he just says ‘okay, fine, alright’ and leaves (it reminded me of a teenager being told off). When Aaron felt amused by Robert being back yesterday, he looked to see if John was looking and immediatly changed his expression like he’s scared to know how he’ll react if he had caught him smiling at Robert. Aaron tiptoes over John’s feelings quite a lot which his over reassurences and excuses to keep John feeling happy and satisfied.

John knowing where Anthony’s body is definitely gives him control over Aaron and I believe he has used that before in the past.

It’s worth the reminded that John HAS in fact harmed a partner in the past and he claimed that he loved his partner more than (Aiden) ever did. Which may play out similar with Aaron loving Robert.

So, I've sort of taken this in a different direction, with John as a witness. Because I can. _____

Robert walked to their bridge, for sentimental reasons. He hadn't expected to find Aaron and John there. He debated walking away, he wasn't in the mood for a fight, when he noticed Aaron had collapsed against the wooden beams of the bridge, panting for breath, gasping. Robert knew the signs. Panic attack. He was still debating whether to approach them or not when he saw the syringe in John's hand. That made up his mind for him.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Robert demanded in horror.

"It's a mild sedative," John said. "It helps get him through it, it's fine."

"You're not touching him," Robert said, elbowing him out the way so he could get to Aaron. He'd deal with John later. Aaron's pupils were blown out and he looked scared, like an animal that wanted to run almost, collapsed on the wood for support. "Hey, it's me," Robert said softly. "Just look at me. It's fine, no pressure, you're safe."

Aaron was still fighting to breathe, but his gaze locked on Robert, focusing on him. "You're not wanted here," John chipped in.

"Piss off," Robert said easily, not taking his focus off of Aaron. "I'm going to touch you, okay?" Aaron blinked, a movement that said yes more obviously to him than words could. Robert gently pressed his thumbs to Aaron's temples, drawing soft slow circles. It had always worked before, and his heaving breath came a bit easier, Aaron's beautiful eyes focused on his. "Take it easy. In. Out. Slowly. You've got all the time in the world. I've got you, I won't leave you."

Robert could feel John's eyes boring into his back, but he didn't spare the energy. He wasn't important now. "Robert..."

"Are you back with me?" Robert asked, still drawing comforting circles on his clammy skin. The tension in Aaron's body had increased and he seemed to be more aware. "What happened?" Aaron swallowed thickly and pulled back from him, awareness creeping back in.

"Thanks," Aaron said distantly.

"How often?" Robert asked.

"None of your business," John said.

"Every couple of weeks," Aaron said. Robert was shocked. Aaron did get panic attacks but that was far more frequently than he used to. Before. Before all this. "Just... don't."

"How often are you drugging him through it?" Robert said, whipping around to John.

"I'm not," John said, all innocent.

"I saw the syringe, you freak," Robert said. Then he looked at Aaron. "Forget me, Aaron. Forget everything about me and how I feel. You need to watch out for him, please be careful."

I hope they explore more of Robert’s trauma, not just a one and done thing next week. I’m seeing some people speculate it possibly being sa, which I truly hope that’s not the case because idk, that would make me really sad if they go that route.

I’m assuming it’s physical abuse he endured and had bullies like how Aaron had Jason on his ass when he was inside. I think if that’s where they go, Aaron will be there to help. Just how I mentioned in my predictions before, I would love if Aaron saves Robert at some point and if they really explore this story, I could see that happening.

Aaron really doesn’t know how to hide his facial expressions does he lol. I felt like he was just agreeing with John for the sake of agreeing, I don’t think Aaron is as bothered that Robert is around as much as John is. John was also really annoying today like babes, you’ve literally done way more worse things than Robert and Aaron combined, shut up.

Robert’s scenes were great in this episode and Ryan did amazing. We had quirky, funny, serious Robert all in one today and it was so nice to see. I don’t really know this Caleb a whole lot but I feel once all of this unfolds Caleb will be on Robert’s side, he seems great too!

Props to Vic for clocking there’s something bothering Robert and making an effort to help. Also did you guys notice that Robert didn’t want to be alone when Vic was leaving the house? Ohhh he’s definitely not okay. I don’t blame Vic for telling him to leave once she got hit though, I mean I would tell him to leave too honestly. But where did he run off to? I hope he just stayed outside the door or something and didn’t go all berzerk somewhere else.

Outside of Robron, I liked Sarah and Charity’s scenes too. I like Charity being concerned for her and I also don’t think it was wrong for her to tell Cain even though Sarah said not to. I think it was right for Cain to know considering everything that’s been happening. We’ll see how this unfolds too.

Honestly love Emmerdale are going genuine psychopath with John instead of insane serial killer who just goes around stabbing everyone.

He thinks of Aaron, Victoria, and Harry as his possessions; they are his and don't belong to anyone else. He thinks he is perfection, the man to be adored, the hero that everyone wants to bow to, to look up to, to kiss his feet. John is a saviour - the one to save those that are broken. I don't think he can handle when any of his 'possessions' falter their loyalty to him, so he has to get rid of the problem to ensure he is the only one that matters.

I think part of him wants to save Robert so he will see him as his hero, but the other wants to dispose of him to make sure Aaron doesn't leave him for Robert.

It's very interesting. I genuinely enjoy his character.

In the prison waiting room, Robert tells Aaron he still loves him, but Aaron is adamant that John is the right man for him.

Devastated, Robert agrees to leave Aaron alone.

Later, Robert tells John that if their father was alive, he'd have wanted nothing to do with him. Robert puts the boot in, revealing he and Aaron kissed on Aaron and John's wedding day.

Robert is released from prison again

Aaron and John are shocked when a newly released Robert enters.

Robert is the last person he wanted to see back.

Aaron isn't happy either

He doesn't want Robert to cause problems for his marriage to John.

He reveals that he's back to spend time with his family, so Aaron and John will be seeing much more of him.

Aaron truly didn’t mind keeping your relationship a secret.

He thought it was a good idea considering you two were only a few months in. As much as Aaron loved you, and you loved him, hiding it was a necessity. 

Right now? Aaron wanted to walk right up to you and kiss you so hard that the officer speaking to you finally got the message. The officer, John Davis had his hands on you, he kept talking to you, asking you dumb questions. Aaron could tell you were getting irritated, if he did what we wanted, he would be sure you wouldn’t mind. Though, workplace conduct also held him back. He was the unit chief after all. 

But what happened next shocked him. Shy little Spencer Reid walked up to you, wrapped and arm around your waist, and kissed you. 

What?

You were taken by surprise, but the officer just walked away feeling dejected. Spencer pulled back with an apologetic smile and cleared his throat, his face beet red.

“He wouldn’t leave you alone,” he shrugged, explaining his motivation behind kissing you. You just nodded, shocked that your best friend just kissed you.

“Spencer!” Aaron’s voice rang out through the room. Spencer’s head turned, a sickly feeling settling in his stomach. “Outside, now,” Aaron demanded. You sent Aaron a stern glance, silently asking him to not go too hard on Spencer. He didn’t return it.

“Hotch, he wouldn’t leave her alone- I- what was I supposed to do?” Spencer attempted to add reasoning onto the sudden display, though a part of him deep down knew that he liked you as more than just a friend. 

“Get. Me,” Aaron deadpanned. “If you have an issue with the officers or anyone on a case you need to get me or Jj, she’s our liaison, I’m the Unit Chief,” he growled. “I thought you’d remember that, Spencer.”

“Hotch please, you know that guy wouldn’t have went away-” 

“Do I really have to babysit you?” Aaron was just being mean now. You were walking outside to them both anyways, Penelope had another break in the case. 

“Aaron,” you sighed, standing beside Spencer. “Stop being mean.”

Aaron’s body language changed immediately. He shut up. 

“Penelope has something, you head in Spencer, yeah?” You smiled at Spencer and he nodded and went inside. “What the fuck are you playing at Aaron?”

Aaron sighed, then grabbed your waist and pulled you in to kiss him. This wasn’t like any kiss before. It was heavy, passionate and all-consuming. You smiled into it.

“No one,” a kiss to your lips. “Should,” another kiss. “Kiss,” another kiss. “My,” another kiss. “Girlfriend,” he finished it off with a longer kiss, allowing his hands to travel and squeeze your ass, knowing it usually makes you open your mouth in surprise. Your gasp was swallowed by his lips as he pushed his tongue into your mouth, every attempt you made at pulling away was stopped by his large hands. 

“Baby-” breathed in between kisses as his lips latched onto your neck. “The team, they’ll see us-” 

“Fuck the team,” he said breathlessly. It clicked.

“It doesn’t take a genius to figure that one out,” he tried to capture your lips again but you stopped him.

“You have nothing to be jealous of. Spencer is my friend, that's it,” You smiled, pressing a soft kiss on his cheek. 

“Honey-”

“Let’s go back inside, yeah?” You smiled and he grabbed your hand, reluctantly following behind you. You dropped his hand as you walked into the conference room with the rest of the team, but Aaron felt better. 

You were his. He was yours.

I got on the train to work and started rewatching the whole robron storyline, and there are so many romantic casualties to these two idiots in love and some of them I'd completely forgotten. So, here is a comprehensive list of all the people who have been hit by the freight train that is robert and aaron's relationship, in preparation for the next addition...

Chrissie. The OG casualty of robron, the trophy wife who wanted it all and wanted the hot shot husband except the one person who never really wanted that was robert. The woman who wanted to marry a version of Robert that didn't exist and live a perfect life where she could be beautiful on the arms of a beautiful man who adored her. Well, RIP. I will forever love Chrissie for giving us lines such as "I promise, I won't ever cheat on you with another woman" from robert (really relying on that technicality robbo), "you had an affair with a man" and "there's only one person in my marriage sleeping with another man and it's not me!". She really drew the short straw, ending up dead at the hands of her own son...

Finn, the second casualty, a very short-lived romantic interest who was used by Aaron to make Robert jealous in the early days. He suffered an atrocious date with Aaron while Robert watched, after which Aaron ruined Robert's car mirrors and then they fucked. We appreciate your sacrifice, Finn, as you gave us one of the most iconic robron kisses, including two wall shoves.

Rebecca. The other beautiful White woman who looked upon robert and thought "I can fix him" and then realised she absolutely couldn't. Try as she might, and she really tried, there truly was "no one else" for our dear insane robert and she got the shortest straw of them all, coming 2nd in Robert's mind to both Chrissie and Aaron. The mother of Robert's son then left Emmerdale and died off-screen of "complications" iirc.

Lawrence, the THIRD White to see Robert and think "I can fix him" (what is up with this family and wanting to bang robert)... okay not technically a casualty of robron but definitely a casualty of how insane Rob became while he and Aaron were apart... I also couldn't leave him off the list, the storyline was too insane, especially as I had completely repressed all memories of it happening until my darling claudia reminded me and I burst out laughing while on public transportation.

Alex, oh Alex... Dr Hair, the most boring man to watch on screen. The chemistry between him and Aaron really wasn't there and he was more of a palate cleanser until he realised that he truly does just want to be with Robert. Aaron was ready to break up but then Alex accidentally killed a man so Aaron felt bad. Gave us iconic moments such as Robert's iconic "I hope my husband makes you very happy" and being dumped in a gay bar while "crazy in love" plays in the background.

Mike the Chef, aka the hot irish gay guy Bernice tries to set Robert up with on their night out to forget Aaron. Had a pug named Gary, and also tried to pull Robert in a ploy to make Aaron jealous. And it almost worked!! He had to go home alone after Robert bailed on fucking him because he loved Aaron too much, giving us the most perfect reunion ever while Aaron declares his love and cries.

John, you'll be in mediocre company!

Also I've omitted all the actual casualties of them, the people who actually or almost died as a result of robron... that might be another list...

So, I don't think we're going to get this, but that just means someone needs to write it! So here goes.

It had been on the mat when they'd got back from their weekend. John hadn't noticed, too happy after their weekend in Rhyl to notice anything, but Aaron knew what it was and stuffed it in his pocket. He'd decide what to do with it later.

"You alright?" John slides a hand around his waist.

"Just tired. Shouldn't you be getting ready for work." He turned to face him, trying to keep the smile on his face and not think about the prison letter burning a hole in his pocket. "Unless you want to stay home with me all day."

"Can't let Liam down, he needs me. How about instead you meet me for lunch in the pub. My treat."

"You really want to spend time with my mother the day we come back from honeymoon?"

"I like your mum. Come on, it'll save cooking." He nods and then he's gone, slamming the door as he goes.

He doesn't open it right away, tells himself to just ignore it, that Robert had known what he was doing, and what the consequences were, and he wasn't Aaron's problem anymore. So why couldn't he throw it away, why did he keep looking at it.

He's still doing it when he's waiting for John in the garden at the back of the pub, looking at Grace's garden that he and Robert helped to build. Sometimes he wishes he'd stayed away, where there were no memories to hit him at every turn. But then he would never have met John.

"You don't look like a man who just came back from his honeymoon." He rolls his eyes as Mack sits down beside him, beer slopping out of his glass onto the table. "Ooh, a letter, anything interesting?"

"Just junk."

"Always carry your junk mail around with you, do you."

"Anyone ever tell you you're annoying."

"Many many people. So, go on, what is it."

"A prison visiting order, or at least I think so." He glances behind him, the last thing he needs is his Mum earwigging and telling the whole village.

"Right..."

"From Robert."

"Ah. Well I guess he doesn't have many people to send them to."

"After what he did, why does he think I want this?"

"So chuck it and forget about him. Unless...you don't want to."

"Of course I do. I married John didn't I."

"Sadly yes." He doesn't even have to look over at him. "Sorry sorry. I'm just messing. Still doesn't answer my question about why you're fondling that envelope like it's a long lost lover."

"And to think you were meant to be my best man."

"Says more about you than me." He sips at his beer, sighing. "I'm guessing you haven't told hubby."

"He had to rush to work."

"Sure. Well you've got two choices. You can throw it away, forget all about Robert Sugden which will be hard as you're married to his brother and all, or you can mope about for days before finally deciding to visit him and see what he wants."

"I know what he wants. Me."

"Man obviously has no taste. You already know what you're going to do so I say get it over with."

"I'm meant to be meeting John." There was never really a question, he could fight it as much as he liked, he would never leave Robert alone in prison and wasn't that the whole sticking point in the first place.

"I'll tell him you got called out on an emergency scrap run."

"Just that, none of your dramatics. Tell him I'll meet him for tea instead." He insists as he gets up from the stool.

"You're doing the right thing you know."

"You don't even know Robert."

"For you, idiot. Now go on, before you change your mind and we have to do this all over again. You're making my pint go flat."

He doesn't think twice, gets in the car before he can change his mind.

Whumptober Masterlist/Overview

Hey guys! I'm going to be attempting to participate in Whumptober this year (though admittedly I did kind of mash together a few different prompt lists). I have about 20 days planned out right now, and I really hope to get through them, but no guarantees unfortunately, because I do have other stuff going on in my life. Also most of these are in fact just going to be hurt/comfort because I am a weak man. Also yes I am aware that the variation in these characters is kind of insane, don't come at me.

Day Two - Migraines - Darry Curtis - Juggling a migraine and the Curtis gang is not the easiest thing in the world. Luckily, Darry is there to come to your rescue and tell the others off

Day Three - Overstimulation - Diego Hargreeves - (1960s, autistic Reader) - Between the prison break, Diego's strange brother, and home movie footage showing the assassination of the president, your not sure how much more you can take.

Day Four- Field medicine/"Hang on, we're going to have to improvise." - Fili - Even with the battle beginning to turn in your favor, there are still many losses to come, no matter how hard you work to prevent them.

Day Five - "You don't need to earn this." - Tommy Shelby - When your surprises and gentle treatment catch Tommy by surprise, he questions what he'd done to deserve it.

Day Six - Hostile environment/"I don't know how anyone could survive that." - Alfie Solomons - (War Era, Male Reader) - A poorly planned attack leaves you stuck in no mans land. Even if you make it back to the so called "safety" of the English trenches, nothing will ever be the same.

Day Seven - Needles/Stitching - John Shelby - After being sent on another needless errand by his brother, John returns late, exhausted and bloody.

Day Eight - Panic Attack - Aaron Hotchner - When a case that hits too close to home has too many missing pieces, and seemingly no end, you can't help but fall prey to a growing sense of panic.

Day Nine - Falling Asleep in a hospital room - Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw - When a training incident gone wrong lands Bradley in the hospital, you take it upon yourself to stay with him.

Day Ten - "Shhh, I've got you now, I'm here." - Alfie Solomons - Sabini's men kidnap you in a desperate attempt to get a leg up on your husband. When Alfie finds out, he's ready to burn the world down to get to you.

Day Eleven - Chronic pain - Boromir - The first day of a cold spell causes your pain to flare up, but you're determined to grit your teeth through the pain. Boromir however, is determined to get you to rest.

Days Twelve - Fourteen Break Days

Day Fifteen - Hiding an Injury - Aragorn - Somewhere in the thicket of Helms Deep, you're injured, but in the chaos that follows, doing anything about it seems to slip your mind.

Day Sixteen - "I did good, right?" - Umbrella Academy Unit - A mission gone wrong forces you to over use your powers, pushing you too far.

Day Seventeen - Bleeding Through Bandages - Kili - After being injured in escaping the Orcs, Oin does his best to heal you, but miles down the road, it doesn't seem to be enough.

Day Eighteen - Nightmare - Alfie Solomons - Night after night, you are plagued with nightmares, and Alfie seems to be the only thing that can cure them.

Day Nineteen - Scars - Diego Hargreeves - While patching Diego up after a fight, you see his scars for the first time.

Day Twenty - "Who did this to you?" - Dallas Winston - You get jumped, Dally plots revenge.

Day Twenty One - "You haven't done anything wrong." - Aaron Hotchner - (Autistic reader) - After a particularly long day, you find yourself overwhelmed and unsure. Luckily Aaron is there to help you calm down, no matter how much you protest.

Day Twenty Two - Chronic Pain (again) - Alife Solomons - Getting Alfie to take a day off when his sciatica is bothering him is a full time job.

Day Twenty Three - Exhaustion - Darry Curtis - Darry has been working himself to the utter bone. You take it upon yourself to make him rest.
