Jackets

He laughed!

He had the fucking audacity to laugh.

The warm breath from his mouth, forming precipitates as his dusky pink lips grinned.

She didn't even bother turning her head to spare him a mere glance. Another car zoomed past them reminding her of the lack of clothing on her arms.

"I will squeeze your knees", she hissed.

This time he threw his head back and laughed. It was so far back that she prolly thought that he would tip over.

She started her March across the now empty road. Just as the signals shifted.

It took a moment for him to realise that he was alone and the evil vixen had crossed over to the other side. His driver approached him, distracting him. It was in that moment he lost where she was.

"Yes felix", he murmured.

"Car's ready sir". He informed.

"Have a spin then", he gestured spinning his finger as he crossed, j walked across the road. Barely missing a car.

Lifting his hands up in apology but a shit eating grin said otherwise.

"Idiot", she cursed. As she watched him risk his life casually strolling across the road. A kid in the small yet packed cafe was mesmerised by her two tier anarkali dress. As her mum waited in the line for a bite to grab. The bangles on her wrist was what had her hooked. She smiled at kid and hoped that her pursuer had fucked off.

"Are you allergic to flowers?", she asked the kid who appeared to be 7 ish. The kid shook her head which was covered by a neon pink cap.

"Here, you can have them", she smiled taking the jasmine and rose bangles off her wrists.

The kid's face lit up with joy. The mother was keeping an eye on her kid. As everyone was busy looking as the woman in traditional Asian festive drab. After a quick polite conversation the mother and daughter duo were out.

She moved in a corner away from the window. Stealing a glance at the clock it was ten past eleven. She had been in here for the last ten minutes. Reaching for strength the battle the cold weather outside. She dived into the reservoir of anger she held against her parents for what they had said to her this evening. She looked outside and rubbed her arms. That had goosebumps but no hair because of lazer. She Took her time release the veil that she had pinned earlier and placed it around her shoulders well aware that it wouldn't offer any protection from the cold. The front door opened, gush of cold wind and an overjoyed "there you are".

He walked up to her putting his phone in the pocket of his bespoke jacket . Every eye followed him. Hoping for drama to unfold and drama did he serve.

"How did you find me?". Voice venomous.

"I just asked followed the breadcrumbs, well in your case the smell of the flowers", he. Smiled tilting his head to the side which only provoked icy glares from her.

"Oh, look at my sweet model throwing tantrums", he teased.

She gave him a puzzled look. A man to her left offered her help if the suit was being bother some. Which she declined with the shake of her head.

" she is my muse. I'd never bother her", his eyes fluttered with mischief. "I was merely hoping that she would return back to me so I could praise and marvel her beauty for the rest of the night", he placed a hand over his chest signet glinting at the faux offence.

" stop it", she warned. Glancing outside.

"Oo. Grumpy. I get it you haven't eaten. I know those pesky photographs dont want you eating during shoots and you dont like to be filmed when eating", he pointed at her. Oozing cheekiness.

"Well, let me rectify that", he murmured turning to the menu being particularly unimpressed. " do you want a chocolate muffin or walnut darling", he inquired keeping his hand on his chin.

He didn't hear a reply.

Someone pointed out to him that she had left. He followed hot on her trail.

"How were you planning on paying?", he called keeping a meter of distance between them.

"I wasn't ordering anything". She called back. He took this as a positive sign and happily walked up to her side.

" really. Not even a coffee?", he was puzzled. "I certainly could use one". He pointed out sliding his hand into his pocket.

" I'm not throwing a tantrum", she spoke.

"Really", he wasn't buying it.

"You have no idea the amount of self control I'm showing not to punch you". She smiled at him. "I deserve a reward". She spoke to herself.

"What time would that be around because I have an invitation for breakfast because I managed to unconsciously impress an uncle of yours",

"Do me a favour and dont go", she commented.

"Only If you invite me to your reward thing". He offered.

"Whatever it's your loss, Probably would want you to invest in a project", she dismissed with the wave of her hand.

"I'll do whatever I see fit", he spoke. Throwing her words from earlier.

"Wow", she mocked. Folding her arms across her front amazed that he would do this.

"Yes you look stunning, dressed in lace and anger. This is definitely working for me". He gestured to her 5'5" hundred pounds frame.

"Why did you come?"

"Because I was invited"

"Next time decline". She hissed. Stroking her arms.

He automatically assumed that she was cold.

"Its amazing how all this anger is keeping you warm. If not hot". He stroked her bare shoulder and unfolded her arms grabbing her hands. Finding them ice cold. He stroked her fingers.

He pulled her closer to him. "Have I mentioned it's working very well for me", he winked. She shivered again. Breaking eye contact.

" next time we will colour coordinate". He grinned.

"There will not be a next time". She clarified.

" there were several of your cousins. I'm pretty sure. One of them could decide." He began.

"I'm next and if not me then Tina", she managed to verbalize as a rush of cold air managed to shake her pin straight hair.

He lost his cheeky edge for a moment. That caused his security to take a step in their direction. She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear and he stared at her.

"I volunteer". He spoke.

Naturally she punched him smack in the middle of his chest. Now his security was standing to his left as he laughed. And she hugged her hand close to her chest.

" Ivon. She is a foot shorter than me do you really think that was necessary", he scolded.

" fuck you", she hissed.

"Ooo role play in public, I just have to figure how to get under that....." he was practically devouring her. That straight hair and braty behaviour entertaining him enticing.

"Run along Ivon". He nodded to his left.

She was clearly embarrassed to have a witness to this behaviour.

"I'll be....", she trailed off walking into an incredibly pricey high end store. Where only 9 articles were on display.

"You know my employees sign an NDA so you dont have to worry about anything", he stood next to her and settled his hand at the base of her spine.

A platinum blond approached them with glossy smile offering help. She didn't even look at her. He politely told her that they are still looking. She kept her distance.

Stroking the fur of a peach jacket smiled to herself.

"Care to share". His voice floated through the soft notes of the piano.

"Tina always said that stores that display eleven items always over price". He nodded in agreement as he observed the lack of price tags.

" are these all?" Tirza said gesturing to the rack.

"We have more, these are just our best sellers". The attendant smiled.

" what is madam looking for". She asked trying to get an idea.

" a puffer coat perhaps", she said nodded.

" a silk and wool evening coat with a belt, preferably cream". He smiled.

" right this way", the woman turned on her heel.

"How much do you have on you?" Tirza asked. As she fixed her non functional veil for the third time.

"So you're letting me buy you a jacket", he delighted.

"No. I'm buying myself a jacket and am temporarily borrowing money from you", she clarified. "Black", she said as the woman held up two puffer jacket options.

"I dont see silk or wool in that", Oliver commented.

"One moment please", Tirza smiled quickly at the attendant and dragged Oliver away by his arm.

" look I can't accept an over priced jacket from you that I'll wear for just 30 minutes". She explained.

" it takes 15 to get to mine and 25 if you're walking".

Groaning she cried, " why is this fun for you?".

" because I got to spend a lovely evening observing you, looking absolutely delicious and angelic", his lips hovered over her cheek. " also it was my first time at an Asian engagement party, I throughly enjoyed myself".

" that's a first. I didn't know", Tirza hummed.

"Plus the ladies were pretty to look at". He joked.

" ofcourse", she swatted him on his arm.

" tremendously physical aren't we this evening", he murmured huskly grabbing her wrist.

" I'm just annoyed, itchy and cold", she sighed, " but proud" she added.

" because...." his eyebrows raised.

" because I wore flats". She raised the skirt to show her feet.

" cold I can fix, now where is the itch?". He teased eyeing her.

" no just drop me home", she said rubbing her hands on her arms.

" no. You're coming with me", he spoke sternly.

" Oliver", she warned. He raised his eyebrows at her taunting her.

Fine two can play dirty.

" home", she poked at his arm.

" no", he refused to look at her.

" I need to change out of this itchy top I'm pretty sure my boobs are scratched". She stated looking at his face. Waiting for information to click in.

" pardon", he was pretty sure his misheard her. Did she just say boobs out loud?

" Tirza, are you telling me that you haven't got a thing under that?" He pointed to her front.

"Yes. That's why I needed to get a jacket because I'm cold and you...", she was about to say something that would potentially have them kicked out of the store.

" Angi. I want the champagne silk and wool French style coat with a belt". He stared at her challenging her to defy him.

" but she asked for the puffer Oliver". The woman argued.

" I know what she asked for. But get me what I want. You've been dealing with us for ages please dont let your reputation waver", he almost snapped.

" absolutely, right away". She scampered off.

" cool. She knows your name", Tirza pointed out coolly.

" yes" he looked at her briefly and his eyes dipped south. She caught that. " benefit of being non existent" she joked.

" they are plenty enough for me". He groaned.

" did you know?". She smiled wickedly at him.

" no", he spoke after a deep breath.

"Honestly I didn't notice it until you mentioned so", he gestured to her front.

" because darling if I'd known then there would have been no way that I would have let you parade on the streets in this balls freezing cold".

"I kind of like the cold", she commented. " gives me time to think",

" about being an infuriating tease", he remarked.

" whatever". She rolled her eyes.

" shall we?", he offered her his arm.

"Why thank you Sir", she accepted it.

He directed her to the modern glass counter to pay. Like he did on those rare moments when he accompanied his mother.

The duo stopped before a behemoth mirror that was two stories in length approximately.

He readjusted the jacket and tucked at his collar. " you look fine", she patted his hand. A frown had settled on his brow. " mighty fine I may add and its absolutely working for me", she added using his arm, and her tip toes to reach his ear. But missed by a few inches. She looked so cute. Tiny and pratically engulfed by the bottom of her outfit. She met his gaze in the mirror. "Okay. I look good too", she said shyly

"Ah, yes. But we could have matched and it would have been ever better". He murmured scratching the very mild beard on his face. " I wasn't even sure you were going to show up", she sighed.

" or else I would have matched my knickers" she blinked innocently at him.

" ofcourse you would have," he smiled sarcastically.

" Angie," he called the woman was next to him in less than a blink. " I'd like to take the puffer and cream trench coat, do not place that on the family's account but on mine". He slipped his arms from Tirza to pull his wallet out.

" absolutely", she complied giving him a secretive smile.

" baby. we only need one. Tell her to put one away before she tags them". Tirza tried to reason.

" yes. One. You picked and the other I'm buying for you", he spoke placing a kiss on her hair.

" could I please have the bill?", Tirza asked.

The attendee immediately turned to see what Oliver had to say.

With a quick scan of their purchase. Tirza turned on her heal the bottom of her skirt twirling.

" I'm charging this to Tina", Tirza frowned.

" I have a better option", Oliver offered. As he kept her attention on her skin that she wouldn't look at both the articles being packed and halt the process.

" what may that be?", she thought.

"Charge Drew, I'm sure he can handle the damage and I'll tell him I got you something and his Aries ass will want to top that off", his eyes were overflowing with mischief.

"And buy Tina more shite and then they would fight". Tirza completed. Disappointed.

"Thank you Angi", he smiled taking the purchases.

" oh, love do try them on", he offered her the bags.

" everyone is staring at us", she observed.

"So let them", he shrugged taking the cream coat out of its casing.

"Not wearing that",

"But it compliments your dress, that's why I picked it", he explained.

"It costs more than everything in wearing". She cried moving outside.

"Tirza you're awfully upset, it's just a jacket", he tried to calm her. As she started to walk again.

"Jackets, plural", she corrected.

"Fine. Jackets, you know I like to get you nice things", he said offering her the cream coat once again.

" now you sound like a sugar daddy. An investor, and I sound like a brat kept", she exclaimed. On the verge of cryin on everyone. Including myself", she began. Wiping a tear quickly. "I know I should be reasonable and accept the Jackets because its freezing I may end up catching pneumonia and die", she laughed at the end. Quoting Emerson.

His reaction was glacial at that statement but at least she was talking and he wanted to hear what she had to say.

"I've turned into this over analysing and controlling bitch just by being with them all for a few hours".

" That's enough, stop belittling yourself", he warned.

" why are you yelling at me?", she spoke through the heavy lump in her throat.

" oh luv, I'm not yelling at you. Please come with me". He begged stroking her cheekbones.

"You should leave before their", she paused and laughed. " my madness spoils what we have, I've turned into this controlling freak and telling you not to go places. I mean we are just seeing eachother". She spoke on a sneeze.

" excuseme", she heard him say. In a tone he had never used with her. Which only made her cry more.

"We have been together...we have been exclusively together....", he corrected himself.

"No one asked you to", she rebutted.

That was his limit. He had enough of this outburst.

" you listen to me Tirza", he transferred the bags to his forearm. With a firm grip on her waist he pulled her to him. " I'm aware that you're upset", he stroked her face. " I'm sorry that people say rude things. But, I'm in love with that over analysing brain of yours", he lifted her chin with his finger and placed a firm kiss on her forehead.

"Your family do have an effect on you, because that's how families are. You have had no one except them. And frankly speaking they guilt trip you into doing what you wouldn't possibly want to do", he signed. As she took a cold breath. Nodding. Casuing the remaining tears to slide down her face.

Which he wiped with his thumb.

" I choose to love you and be with you and this isint because of your family bullying me into loving you, it's how I feel towards you, what i feel is so intense that whatever happens when i meet your family. It will always be greater than them",

" I'm afraid of being the controlling woman", she croaked, "and being selfish".

He had silenced her with a kiss. What a sight it was. A woman in a fancy garb experiencing an emotional breakdown while a man consolidated her. As his security watched. She shivered in his embrace as more tears flowed.

She needed to be held. And he held her. Completely understanding her. Slowly pouring strength into her along with warmth from his body.

He was aware that she had issues, so did he. But what they had and his emotions towards her were far too intense to be dismissed away.

The woman in his life was having a breakdown of sorts at eleven thirty-ish. He was honoured to hold her broken pieces until she found the energy to mold them back into a stronger version of herself.

She had shivered twice already. A third one that practically rocked his upper body.

"Tirza", he whispered at her crown. Inhaling the scent of her hair, he smiled because he knew that she had a weird habit of putting a small spray of perfume in her hair.

"Hmmm", she acknowledged, practically melted in her embrace.

"Please put a jacket on?", he requested.

She broke from his embrace. He prepared himself for a protest. He watched her turn around. Her back to him. As she gathered the shimmery barely there veil in one hand.

"Well, hurry up", she spoke as another car passing by caused her hair to whoosh.

"Sorry", he murmured, shoving his hand in the bag and pulling out the puffer jacket.

"Which one?", his hand hovered not daring.

"Cream", she managed inhaling sharply.

"Fucking....", he hurried to get the cream and silk creation out.

"Horse cock", she supplied slipping her arms in the sleeves. As he held her hair.

"Thank you Ivon", he spoke making her face heat up. She stopped and turned around to see that his security was standing two feet away from them. Holding both the bags. He had heard her suggestion.

She didn't dare make eye contact with Ivon or glance in his direction.

Oliver had a bloody grin on his face. Yep. He heard her.

'I hate you', she mouthed at him. Tossing him her crumpled veil. He simply shook his head and smiled at her.

She sneezed. Almost folding in half.

"Here madam", Ivon offered her a wipe.

"Thank you", she said quietly before a sneeze.

"Ivon, car", Oliver hissed as he watched her eyes water. Ivon nodded and rushed off.

Oliver tried to grab her hands but she didn't let him pointing out that there were germs involved.

"Fuck", he hissed. Slipping his hands in the jacket to rub her waist. Only to discover that the inner silk wasn't warm yet.

"Bloody hell', he cursed. Tirza looked at him confused as she was about to sneeze again. He wrestled out of his jacket and was no fighting the no good cream and wool devil off her.

"Ooo strip tease", she teased. As she rubbed her cheek against the warm material of his prized Burberry jacket.

"Now the shirt", she laughed as she watched him fold the jacket she had on formally neatly over his arm.

"You should return that, it's done you no good", she winked.

"Never", he practically growled. Pulling her into his side. Rubbing her arm. In an attempt to provide warmth.

"This is the first time a man has given me his jacket", she murmured as she snuggled him. His heartbeat fast.

"Thank you", she smiled. As she placed a small kiss on the skin right above the collar of his shirt.

"I love you too", he spoke in her hair as he held her closer.

"Madam," Ivon held the door open for her.

"Thank you", she nodded at him as she gracefully slid into the car.

The heated upholstery was a luxury that she moaned with relief.

"Where to Sir?", The driver who's name she couldn't recall asked making eye contact in the rearview mirror.

"Where to?", he asked turing to Tirza.

"Hi and hotel please", she smiled at the driver.

"Absolutely". The driver nodded.

"What floor are you on?", she asked as they entered the lobby.

"7th floor", he answered. As they walked to to counter. She looked at him puzzled.

"Key", he explained as he provided his name to the concierge who immediately provided him with an envelope.

" what's bothering you?", he asked.

"Just wondering who is cashing in on the over night stay?", she admitted.

He looked at her surprised. As he requested a few warm beverages and some fresh fruit for them to nibble on.

"Why, afraid you might run into someone?",

She nodded.

"Coffee or tea?", he asked.

"Tea, chamomile If they have it. Please", she requested. He conved it on.

The concierge informed him that his suitcase had already been delivered to the room.

"When did you get the room?", she asked amazed as they stepped in.

"Ivon did, this afternoon", he answered.

"Bath?", he offered.

"Actually a shower", she declined. Shrugging out of his jacket.

"Sure, I need to make a phone call", he pointed to the jacket that she had taken off.

She quickly showered. Relishing the intensity of the water. Upon leaving the ensuite bathroom she discovered him holding a cup of tea. He was still on the phone. So she busied herself with preparing on herself.

She was halfway done with the tea when he ended the phone call with and walked into the bathroom stripping.

She was surprised to see that the closet was already equipped with his clothes.

"How long are you planning to stay?", she questioned eyeing the contents.

"Two days", he answered startling her.

She jumped and her hand immediately went to the hotel supplied robe. While he wore a towel.

"Oh, God", she huffed. As he opened a closet door to pull out a small black bag.

He looked at her thoughtfully and motioned with his head to follow him to the bathroom.

"You didn't have to pick them up", he commented as he observed that she had picked his clothes from the their designated location on the marble.

"I didn't, house keeping did", explained. "I just handed it to her".

"Ah yes. Claire", he nodded. As he placed the contents of the bag on the double vanity. Which she sat on.

"That's a cute bag", she commented.

He shook his head at her.

"What", she cried dramatically. Getting off the marble.

"Stay", he requested observing his reflection in the massive mirror.

She hoped back on.

"You okay?", she asked tiling her head to the side.

"Yea. I might give up while shaving", he admitted. "If you go". He added.

December Dalliances 2019

It’s over, the holidays are over. Usually that makes me unhappy but this year they felt like the perfect amount of time. I’m crazy ready to start a new year. I remember being a kid and thinking, “In 2020, I’ll be 35… oh no” And now that it’s here, I’m pretty excited about it. I think it’s because there are so many things to look forward to this year (going to a wedding in the Catskills with Nathan & Baby Dog, going to London to see my friend Sarah, going to Barcelona with Gary, seeing where him and his family live in Glasgow, seeing a Euro Cup semi-final game in Amsterdam with my brothers, spending the day in Lisbon, spending quite a bit of time on the coast in Portugal, going on an anniversary trip in August). So. Excited. For. Everything.

But enough about the future, let’s delve into the recent past for a minute. Here’s what happened in December that was notable:

I made these Chickpea Pitas that were very good, I used wholewheat tortillas instead of pita and it still tasted great.

I have so many creams and lotions, please no one ever buy me another one. I just started using this Vichy Collagen cream (that I got two Christmases ago!) as a morning face cream and it’s wonderful. Very soft. Not sticky or greasy. Fully recommend. Especially for winter mornings.

I have no idea how I got them, but I had a stack of Dr. Dennis Gross (terrible name to put on a product) Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peel packets that have been hanging around my beauty box (which is a storage box full of beauty samples and gifts and things I intend to one day use but haven’t yet) - so I just started using them once a week and whoa. They be tingly. Is that a good thing? I guess? I know nothing about skincare. In any case, they feel like they’re doing something magical when I use them but that’s about it. Are they worth $88 American dollars for a pack? God, no. But if you get a chance to use them as a sample or something, go for it. What do these wipes DO exactly? I’m told they’re “anti-aging.” Sidenote: I hate products that only promote that. How could you ever prove something is anti-aging?! You can’t! Unless you use it for 5-10 years and have before & after shots. And no one is going to do that. It’s bullshit. I’d respect the product more if it just said, “We don’t know what it does, but it feels fun on your face. Give a try!”

No one can stop me from loving old-school animation. The giant eyes and heads on today’s animation is horrifying to me and makes me miss the days of the 1992 version of Aladdin and the way kid’s movies used to look. I came across this old made-for-TV-movie Annabelle’s Wish and though it was nothing spectacular, I love the way it looked.

I tried the Japanese cheesecake that I’ve heard so much about: Uncle Tetsu in Square One. Verdict? It’s not cheesecake. But that’s not a bad thing. It really just tasted like a light, cheesy bread - but with none of the fulfillment of being too cheesy.

Looking forward to a new season of Curb on the 17th.

One thing that’s pissed me off this month: PINK (the Victoria’s Secret brand) no longer carries underwear in size XL. They just stopped making them. It happened at some point last year. And I mean, I was already not a fan of regular Victoria’s Secret, but now? This is insane. For a brand that already has existing problems with inclusion, are you fucking kidding me? I’ll never go back into any of their stores. I hate that I’ve supported them for as long as I have.

I watched a couple of the newest SNLs over the Christmas break and the absolute best part of all of them? These performances.

Lizzo, her dancers, her musicians, everything: perfection. Not only are they great performances, but seeing women who have regular fucking bodies? I need it. I need it bad. I’m a 34 year old woman and I still need to see this. I needed this when I was a teenager, I needed this when I was a kid. I could go on and on about why this is needed, but hopefully you just get it.

I rewatched Mean Streets because I genuinely couldn’t remember if I like Scorsese movies or not and… some are good? Best part of this movie:

I tried some wasabi Kit-Kats from Japan and yowza. They good.

This sounds like a broken record but I watched the newest season of Fuller House and I still don’t know why I watch this show when I know it isn’t good. I have a problem. Although it did bring me to this song that I now love.

I just bought this incredible throw blanket for the couch from Indigo (that is wildly on sale right now), I suggest you get one.

End of the year posts can get a little cheesy or heavy or preachy, but I absolutely loved this one from Ijeoma Oluo.

After using one Tarte eyeshadow palette for literally all of 2019, I branched out and got two new palettes. This Huda Beauty one (love it, great for going out) and this Colorpop one that is stunning but absolutely does not last throughout the night.

No idea how Sephora had this as a reward, but I got a mini version of a Pat McGrath mascara and I love it. Also, SO IN LOVE with these balms.

While in Mississauga, I went to The Dr. Seuss Experience and oh man, it’s wildly overpriced for what it is. I mean, it’s in an old Sport Chek for christsake. Should’ve cost $5/person, MAX.

Excited to see this movie (below), love a winter horror movie.

I saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and it’s very okay. Definitely not among the best movies I saw in 2019. Also, I think I really don’t like Quentin Tarantino. Gotta remember that next time. Overrated hack.

I love to read about food and I love this “Best Meals Eaten This Decade” list.

There’s this postal store in the East Village that I’m quickly falling in love with. They act like a post office, but they also sell various independent lines of greeting cards and small gifts. Love this place.

I tried a sample of Glossier’s Cloud Paint and I think I might splurge and get one. I’m still not sold on the idea of using my fingers to rub product on my cheeks (I’m totally fine using my fingers on my eyelids though for some reason), but we’ll see. I’m going to go to the flagship store to try on some colours. Will report back.

Absolutely love this piece entitled The Age of The Instagram Face.

Some new recipes that I tried for Christmas: I made this heavenly white wine gravy (must remember to make again), this spinach Christmas tree with marinara sauce on the side for dipping that was a huge hit and these pumpkin cheesecake cups.

I must have mentioned them before, but the roast beef sandwiches at San Remo’s in Etobicoke = heaven on earth.

Keep this in mind.

I went to Lilia for the second time and yes, it’s a very good restaurant. Their bread special is fucking unreal and the agnolotti is stellar, I just wish it weren’t in Brooklyn. I know for sure now that L’Artusi is my favourite place for pasta, but this one is definitely top five.

Some things that I’m looking forward to this month: I’m on the hunt for a new coat (specifically a somewhat-fancy coat, perhaps faux-fur) because I hate not having anything dressy to wear outdoors, I’m really excited to share my resolutions for the year (post coming soon), I’m so interested in getting a lash lift but they’re too expensive so I’ll continue to debate it in my mind, excited about Restaurant Week starting, I finally got Jenny Slate’s new book so I’m looking forward to reading that, and honestly the main thing I want is snow. That’s it. The quietness that comes with it. The bitter air it brings. I want it all and I want it now.

The Letter: Chapter One

Paper fluttered out of her hand down to the floor. That was it one more, and final, letter wrote. Two minutes more. That’s all she needed. Two minutes of pain and sorrow; then everything would finally be still. Eye lids fluttered closed. Her breathing evened out. She smiled.

“Alex!"

She breathed in and out, lost to the world. The last thing she heard is a sob and the sound of a siren in the distance.

He holds Alex in his arms, hugging her as if he let go she would disintegrate. The smell of her hair and the colour of her cheeks seems to simultaneously overwhelm the room and fade away. He heard the door open.

“How long has she been out?” “I need to take a pulse.” “Sir, please move away so we can do our jobs.” “What did she take?” An endless barrage of questions fall on deaf ears as he clings to his friend. Strong hands ease him away from the scene, pulling him to the edge of the room and facing him towards the window. It’s snowing.

He’s unsure how many hours have crawled by before a woman in a uniform ushers him from the now empty attic bedroom. All he can think of is the ashen colour of her skin and the paper crunching under foot. The paper! He grabbed it before the officers arrived. Before he could slip away to read it his train of thought was interrupted by the women, Officer Jennings he remembers, asking him…uh something. Blinking he responds, “Can you repeat that?"

“I understand this must be a traumatising occurrence Mr…” “Elliot, Elliot Norton.” “Mr. Norton. In effort to understand what led to Miss. Braley’s efforts to take her life I must ask you a few questions. Can you handle that Mr. Norton?" “Uh…yeah, I think I can do that.”

“What happened when you arrived at Miss. Braley’s house?”

Elliot shivers. He recalls the events of today. All of the warning signs. Her comments and subtle attempts at distancing herself from the people around her in classes. How she didn’t respond to his phone calls. How he wasn’t fast enough.

“Is Alex going to be okay?” Mind reeling, that was all he could focus on. “Miss. Braley…Alex…should be just fine, thanks to you Elliot. Can you please tell me what happened before you called us?"

“Okay,” Elliot sighs. “We were supposed to study at my house today and she never showed. When she didn’t answer my phone calls,” crap the messages, “I came over. No one was home so I used the spare key, I house sit for their family, to let myself in. She wasn’t in her room. That’s when I called you, because she was either missing or something had happened. I heard something come from upstairs and I ran up her to…to find…she was…” He couldn’t say it. “It’s okay Elliot. We don’t need much more from you. Did Alex give you any clues that she was thinking of self harm?"

“I don’t…no…not that I…” He couldn’t finish.

“It’s okay Elliot. Do you have someone I can contact to take you home?"

“My sister. Ros. Her number is…it’s ahhh…I can call her, it’s in my phone.” Elliot removes the hideous shock blanket someone must have bestowed on him when he was ushered out of the attic. Pushing through the officers he manages to escape into the kitchen, trying to breathe. How many times is this now? Six? Seven? He doesn’t have a clue. At least his shocked facade was growing more believable. The police didn’t even do a second round of questions. He doesn’t want Alex to suffer more than she already does. It's always hard, seeing your girl, no your friend-just friend-in that situation. You’d think the teen boy would be desensitised a bit by now. He thought that Alex was getting better. It had been over a year since her last attempt, an attempt that shook Elliot to his very core. He found Alex on the bridge—the one that he crossed everyday on his way home from downtown. An old stone thing, ivy growing everywhere, he and Alex would sit there sometimes watching the water and talking for hours. He found her passed out, blood spilling everywhere, on the far end of the north pillar. The place they always sat, hidden from the road if you didn’t know it was there. That one had been hard to handle. Sometimes the boy had to stop and wonder if this was supposed to be a normal pat of life. Is one supposed need more than one hand to count the number of times he’s written a letter or found a friend?

He opens his phone, the smooth glass is warm from his back pocket, and dials Ros.

“Ros here.” Her bell tones were rough, she must still be at work.

“Ros, it’s Eli. I have a situation…” His voice was a whisper. “

Did you get arrested?” “No.” “Are you in the hospital?” “No.” “Are you hurt?” “NO.” Are you in immediate danger?” “No, Ros shut up for a second. I’m fine. It’s Alex. She tried again,” he explained.

“Oh…Did you find her this time?” Her voice filled with concern for her little brother.

“Yeah, the police won’t let me walk home so I need you to come get me."

“El, my shift doesn’t end for another 30 minutes. What happened?"

“She slit her wrists this time. She left a note."

“Okay, let me get Kelly to cover my sections.” She hangs up without waiting for a response. She’ll be there in 20 minutes. Elliot returns to the living room where the last two officers are whispering over their pads with intense looks on their faces. Shit. They turn towards the teen as he edges in and towards the couch. Elliot knows they have probably figured out that this is a common occurrence for Alex. There hasn’t been a year since her 13th birthday when Alex hasn’t been hospitalised at least once for self destructive behaviour. She’s always been on the edge of going over into that place—you know, the one that causes its victims to drown in the sun and collapse under the unseen boulder crushing their lungs; the place right on the edge of not being able to turn back. That’s where she has lingered for the past five years.

“Mr. Norton, were you aware of Miss. Braley’s history of self harm?” The male officer steps towards Elliot, the click of his boots echoing off of the stark walls in the Braley residence, “She has a record of suicide attempts spanning almost six years and hospitalisations littering that time due to severe self harm. Were you aware of this history?”

“Yes officer, but I did not know she was declining. The last time I saw her she seemed completely fine and exhibited no symptoms of her depression worsening.” He never once looked away from the officer, if there was one thing Elliot knows like no one else it is how to lie.

The past few weeks had been incredibly dicey with Alex. She was irritable to say the least. Eli had noticed her wearing longer shorts than normal and her eye makeup has been much heavier. What she had told him was disheartening to say the least. A memory stirs.

“Eli, can I be honest with you?” Alex curls up next to him as the opening tones of Star Wars ring through the empty house. “I know you mean well,” she cooed and ruffles his hair, “but can we not talk about my sessions any more? I already have to deal with them once, and that’s enough for me.” Her eye pleaded for a relief. She’s crying out silently for help; Elliot could see it plainly. The thought of ‘you can lead a horse to water’ comes to his mind. He knew Alex would come to him if she really needed help. The past has taught him that words don’t always speak their meanings clearly especially where Alex is concerned.

“Okay A. I only wanted to be here for you.”

“I know Eli. I know. You are, but I need something different right now. Can we just watch the movie?"

“Sure.” They turned back to screen and only the score and the crunch of popcorn accompanied the thoughts screaming in Elliot’s mind.

The officers were packing up as Ros pulls up in her black chariot of junk as Eli calls it, her Dodge Neon. Without checking Elliot bolts to the car, through the living room and out the front door, faster than he though possible at, was it 11:30 already? Ros takes off before he even has his seatbelt fastened. She was still wearing her uniform, the fabric barely enough to cover her, and wrapped in the faux-fur coat she wears for show. She doesn’t say a word until they pull up to the house just across the neighbourhood, a subdivision with two divisions—the rich and the not so rich. Keeping up with the Jones is a real syndrome in Willow Brooks Acres, the peaceful smell of neighbourly rivals and seared skin from pruning bushes for three days straight a common occurrence as neighbours try to top each other’s lives. Both siblings hate the bull pen they live in, but know that it is not permanent. Ros shuts the car off and turns to her brother. “Okay. Dad is home so we need to talk now. What happened?"

“I’m not sure. She’s been bad for a while. I told you about last weekend right?” His sister nods and encourages Elliot to continue. “Well, I had texted her to see if she wanted to avoid her dad by coming over to work on her radio. She didn’t respond until I was already out walking to her house. Her text was robotic so I ran over. She had already slit her wrists, but I think she took some pills too. I’ll visit the hospital in the morning. I’m probably not going to sleep anyways.”

“Do you want me to cover for you tonight instead?” His sister offers as Elliot shakes his head.

“Nah. She’s not going to be awake anyways. Besides, they won’t let me in until tomorrow, she looked pretty bad.” He trailed off, the image of his best friend rising to the forefront of his mind. “I’m going to read her letter anyways; that should keep me busy for a while. It looks like a big one.” The two stiffly end their conversation and hurry inside to find their father sprawled on the couch and mother no where to be seen. A usual Wednesday night. The kitchen is a mess, also fitting within status quo, and the mud closet looks as if a heard of elephants had trampled through it, knocking over the shoes and recycling bin that was only one third filled with beer bottles and coke cans. The stairs are just to the left of the entrance and the pair tiptoes up to their respective rooms. It may only be eleven but waking their father after what looks to be a night of drinking and a sizeable row with their mother is not the way they want to end the day. Ros slides into the first door, black and covered with chalk writing, and locks it behind her. Elliot’s door is third. He whispers a goodnight to his sister and closes his normal white door behind him.

The door is about the only normal thing in Elliot’s room, or cave as he calls it. It’s littered with books and posters and post it notes stuck to any surface flat enough to hold them. His desk is a mass of paper and note books with just a large enough space clear for a laptop. Eliot slides into his bed after changing, wrapping himself in the thready Shakespeare bedspread Alex made him at camp when she was 14. He clutches her letter, daring himself not to open it. The rip of paper is louder than Elliot expected. Gingerly he unfolds the pages, five of them this time, and thumbs them before adjusting his bedside lamp and adjusting his glasses.

Hey Eli. Listen if you haven’t already, don’t cry. We’ve been through this a lot. I’ve been through this a lot. I’ve put you through this a lot. That’s why I’m making this one last. No person is worth the pain I cause. You’re the only person I have and that’s why this letter is only addressed to you. I never know what to write in these things. Just don’t waste my memory okay? Don’t put me on the shelf in a little box like everyone else will. You know there’s more to me than that. And for fucks sake please don’t tell your sister anything I put in this letter.

Elliot puts the pages down. He can’t read this tonight. Not without knowing if she will be okay. He may put on an act when he has to deal with adults, but no one understands what it is like to see your closest friend like that unless they have experienced that feeling themselves. There is only one picture in Elliot’s room. It’s tacked to the wall right above his head. He plucks it off the wall, the wrinkled edges smoothing out under his fingers as he flatness it for the hundredth time. Alex smiling up Elliot wipes some ice cream onto her nose. He remembers that day like it was yesterday. They were 14. He calls that day the last good day. Tonight Elliot would dream of her face on that day.

Foxxyfurends

This post was originally Ecco the dolphin but I thought this more relevant seeing as this person actually inspired my project.

Foxxyfurends is a canadian artist who specialises in ‘handmade, wearable art’ including incredibly intricate animal ears and half face masks - as shown below. It was her creations that helped to inspire me to give Echo’s model ears, as opposed to just making the mask by itself.

Her work is very clean and professional looking, and she uses a lot of very eye-catching colours that fur well together. The fur on all of her products is fake and hand trimmed with a pair of scissors, which I really applaud as it’s very easy to mess up. The ears she makes are also poseable, which I believe is due to the fact that they are made with easily bendable wire-rigid enough to keep its shape but flexible enough to bend without snapping.

Each piece of hers is really beautiful - they are all airbrushed very carefully to give extra depth and add patterns that would be almost impossible with regulalr faux fur - such as gradients and intricate markings (like the tiger stripes)

On top of this, her designs are very original - as seen below- she has a lot of creativity and comes up with unorthodox shapes that still have that realistic appearance. I would love to be able to make such delicate creations with faux fur in the future as I think they would really enhance any sculptures I make. Unfortunately she (or many people who create these type of items) doesn’t disclose many details about how they are so poseable/thin but i’m sure experimenting with different methods in the future would help me get a better idea.

A final thing that she does that I really like is how she trims the fur in a specific way to reflect an actual animal ear- leaving it long on the inside edge and down by the base - which is a really nice touch and adds to the aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Eskinol Fasial Cleanser : The only products I use before bed is my face wash and Eskinol Facial Toner. This toner has done more for my skin this month than any other toner i’ve used ever. The alcohol concentrate is pretty high and not many people may agree with that but it literally leaves your skin squeaky clean and I absolutely LOVE that. I have not had a single breakout or spot this month because of how amazing this product is. Must try!

Bottega Veneta Knott : I very rarely pick up a new perfume i’ve never used before and actually like it. Bottega Veneta Knott has officially become my favourite scent this year. I can’t exactly describe the scent but its citrussyy and fresh but NOT SWEET (unisex) and lovely.

NYX Lip Lingerie : NYX here had 50% off the entire store so ya girl went a bit insane. I had already seen a gajjiillionn videos of reviews and tutorials on the NYX Lip Lingerie so I did not hesitate at all before picking some up. Seduction, Push Up and Teddy are my favourites!

NYX Cosmic Metals : So I did not even know NYX came out with Metallic Lip Creams but I spotted them at the sale and I picked up Retro Harmony and Metropolitan Night but only actually use Retro Harmony, such a pretty metallic champagne shade!! Love wearing this over my lipstick for a little POP and even on it’s own. The reason this has made it into my favourites its because it ALSO happens to be an amazing highlight!!! The shimmer is incredible and the cream is so easy to blend and who doesn't love a cheeky 2in1?

Sunsilk Green Tea & Lemon Detox : I really appreciate brand that are with the trends and what what people are loving for their hair. They have recently come out with 3 different Shampoos and Conditioners. Green Tea and Lemon, Almond and Honey and Coconut. All 4 being amazing for your hair! Smells great and really hydrates you hair making it look really bouncy and healthy. The next best thing about this product is that it’s SUNSILK (affordable af). Love!

Maybelline (Push Up Angel) Mascara : Pretty much the only mascara I was using last(and this) month, it’s one of the only mascaras i’ve used that doesn't require me to curl my lashes first. I’m honestly a bit speechless about this mascara, it’s AMAZING! No smudge, no clumps, and completely water/sweat proof. The only thing I have a problem with is removing it is a bit of a pain so you NEED to use makeup wipes or cleansers. I bought 2 as back up because i’m so afraid to run out (it’s always sold out at boots and watsons!!!)

FASHION

Shirts : My love affair with plaid and striped shirts rekindled this summer and I have absolutely no regrets. H&M and Zara has a variety for colours and patterns.

Slides : I practically live in Sliders now tbh. So comfortable and of course, goes with (pretty much) any outfit. My favourite ones in particular are the faux fur, I have 2 Puma Fenti replicas I bought from local markets here in Thailand and a couple from Nike. H&M has a pretty good collection too. Dainty Chokers : Still very much into my chokers but switching it up a bit with some less-in-your-face ones. Cute dainty jewellery is a very easy way to make your casual outfit more put together. I very rarely wear proper necklaces “statement jewellery” so these small pieces allow me to easily layer and mix it up with fabric and metals and different lengths.

Is it a plane? Is it a bird? No it’s just me, actually back on justauniform.com doing what I love. I have absolutely no idea what I have been doing for all this time. I wish I had a really epic excuse, like, “I’ve been hibernating and I have just woken up for Christmas.” But the truth is, I haven’t really seen much sleep, life has been crazy, good crazy! There is a little life update coming your way, which will explain what has been occurring over the last month or so. For now though, let me just tell you that during my absence I have been curating a winter wardrobe. It is blamin’ marvellous, even if I do say myself.

It is my personal belief that winter is the most depressing season of all time (stay with me here), quite controversial I know, especially with the big day right around the corner. But let’s face it, take Christmas out of the mix, and it is a season of cold, darkness and for many, rather dull clothes. It is a well know fact that the colour of winter is black, but not anymore I tell you! Over the past few month I have found lots of colour, especially in the knit department. I have actually been getting excited about winter dressing, it’s a Christmas miracle.

I am really proud to say that I have finally ventured into the world of trousers. Yes after years of avoiding them, I have to admit that they are the only way to go now that the cold weather is here. This is particularly important to note if you have an aversion to tights, just like this person I met once. The main reason I have steered clear of them in the past is because they’ve always been so boring, but not anymore. I am absolutely loving all the prints that are out there right now. You all probably know by now that I am a humongous fan of the hat, well let me just tell you, this has turned into an obsession, a beret obsession to be precise. This scarf is basically a brilliant blanket, which I am completely happy about, it comes in a number of excellent colours, which are guaranteed to brighten up even the dullest of winter days.

At this time of year I think it is so easy to forget about jewellery, It’s probably got something to do with bundling under layers (just a thought). Anyhow, if I was only allowed to wear one piece of jewellery for the rest of my life, it would be a watch, I’d be lost without one. My watch of the moment has to go to the City Sparkling by ICE watch. I love a bit of sparkle all year round but the festive period is when I deem it compulsory. Yup that’s right you have to wear something sparkly, It’s the festive law. This watch does just that to this colourful ensemble, it makes it sparkle.

If you’ve read my beginners guide to being a maxamilist you’ll know that every outfit should have a talking point. I usually do this in the form of a bag and today is no exception. I behold the bag that nobody thinks is a bag, I swear I could get away with taking it on an Easy Jet flight with another piece of hand luggage. Not only does it hold my life in it, it also gives great snuggles for when Sox isn’t about.

Kristy King, designer of Kayleighs Fashion. Kristy is based in Nunavut and will be showing a full collection at Startup Fashion Week Runway on Oct 25 where she will be showcasing her unique winter apparel. Her pieces are inspired by Inuit tradition and are combined with modern looks to create unique piece. She is an incredibly talented designer, she has leaned the trade from her mother. Lets have a conversation with her.

ARE YOU SELF-TAUGHT OR DID YOU STUDY FASHION DESIGN?

I am self-taught, with the guidance from my Mom early in the field.

DO YOU DESIGN YOUR OWN CLOTHES, OR YOU HAVE GO TO LABEL?

Own designs

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALIZE YOU WANTED TO PURSUE A CAREER AS A DESIGNER?

It was my Moms beautiful pieces that inspired me to take on the skill and drive for fashion.

WHAT OTHER SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT?

Precision in the production of each piece. Marketing experience and background, branding and customer service.

WHAT ARE YOU BIGGEST FEAR WHEN GOING OUT AND STARTING YOUR OWN LINE?

Each piece is unique, and with each line- I strive to provide warm and fashionable garments. Keeping in mind to hope for customer satisfaction in both ways.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A DESIGNER?

My favourite part about being a designer is that I take in the skill passed down from a family of many seamstresses and designers - that I now use for my own lines; designing each piece is different every time and this is where my passion hits home run. I love designing.

COULD YOU GIVE ME A DETAILED BREAKDOWN OF THE STEPS IN PRODUCING A COLLECTION...(FROM CONCEPTION TO THE RUNWAY)?

It all starts with an image in thought. Once I know how a garment will be designed and which style/pattern to use, I start by selecting the type of fabric for the cover and lining, and on to choosing the solid colours & design - collecting all material required for this piece (incl threads, trims, prints, etc).

The fun part comes next. Sewing. The lining is sewn first then the designing of the cover; the exciting part! These are then sewn together and finished with fur. Each piece is inspected prior to Runway to ensure quality, precision and showcase ready.

ARE THE PATTERNS AND COLORS ARE UNIQUE TO YOUR TRIBE OR YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATIONS FROM OTHER TRIBES TOO?

My patterns and colours come from my own picks, some of the designs come from part of my Inuit culture.

IN YOUR DESIGNS; DO YOU USE FAUX FUR OR REAL?

We use real dyed fox fur obtained from an ethical and environmentally friendly Canadian fur and leather house. We ensure to use economically sourced fur that sustain moral usage and production.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND?

One of a kind, unique pieces. All our garments are designed in combination of traditional and modern elements that bring a stunning, elegant and bold look.

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR INSPIRATION?

My background; Inuit traditional pieces are my favorite inspiration to creating these designs, in modern contemporary styles
