what my 65yo father has to say about antis:

let me preface this by saying, i literally wish i had what just happened on video to go viral on TikTok. i was shook by this conversation down to my bones; and if you could see my father - a loud old Italian man with dramatic hand gestures - say what he had to say, i think this shit would blow up. but as i was obviously not filming him while we were eating, i will have to relay to you the story with my words.

so i'm sitting eating dinner at the coffee table with my father while watching TV, as Americans often do instead of eating at the dinner table, and since the news was on he started telling me this story that had been recently mentioned on TV once again from maybe ten years ago (it was in 2014, you can read about it here) where these two 12-year-old girls killed one of their friends as a sacrifice to the Slender Man. yeah, real thing. fucked up.

and so my father told me about how they interviewed one of the killer's mothers, and when questioned about where her daughter's motive could've come from, she said something along the lines of: you know, when i was a kid, i was into Stephen King and horror - and so when my kid was into that kind of stuff, i didn’t think it was a big deal.

so, of course, my response was "yeah, being into that stuff isn’t a big deal at all - it's normal - but being a sociopath and murdering someone is not normal; it's fucked up. but there's nothing wrong with being into horror stories - they're just stories meant to entertain - it doesn't make you a murderer to enjoy Halloween - but it would if you put on a Michael Myers mask and went out and stabbed people." and, of course, like any sane person, my father agreed with me.

then, continuing this line of conversation, i started talking about the concept of how "fiction isn’t reality," and how a frightening amount of people don't understand that; and i literally started telling him about antis - people on the internet who attack and harass others over "problematic" or "inappropriate" fictional interests.

i used well-known pop culture examples like: if you're into Game of Thrones and like Jaime and Cersei together or wanted Jon and Daenerys to end up together (i didn't think he would process the term "shipping," but clearly by the end of this conversation i think i was wrong), that people (antis) will say things like "you should die," and that you "support inc*st in real life," and that "you're disgusting."

i also used the examples of "toxic relationships" in pop culture, like the Joker and Harley Quinn, or Kylo Ren and Rey, and how if you’re into those kinds of fictional relationships that people (antis) will say that you "support toxic relationships," and that you are "glorifying abuse," and that it all "must be what you really want and believe is right or good."

and my fucking 65-year-old father literally goes: "I don’t understand. It’s a TV show. Don't they know it’s fake?"

Besides, we (Minuet and I) both find it ridiculous to tell someone who is, under the transmitter's point of view, “uninformed” (someone who, under the point of view of someone who thinks it's a proship, likely doesn't know) to “get their senses together”. That's just plain rude. Even if it was a proship, there is a clear lack of tact in this ask, and articulating it differently could have made a different, likely more positive impact. Going “hey, this ship is problematic jsyk” is less aggressive, and in the case that the person /is/ in fact uninformed, can be taken more lightly and solved more amicably.

(But of course, Tumblr is not always amicable, is it?)

In the second post attached, Justin also says that we as a community should value our own sense of interpretation as long as it doesn't go completely against the canon of the show. Which it doesn't, because Toilet and MePad literally make up in canon! And they are shown to be friends after T&B! Even after MYOB, you've got to accept that if they aren't in good terms, MePad did everything he could to convince MePhone to let Toilet stay. Toilet is very compassionate, and even if they’re stuck in a strange desencuentro, he would definitely know this.

Yes, MePad not helping him definitely would leave a mark in their relationship, but that doesn't make the ship abusive or toxic in any way. They were stuck in the middle of a chain of unhealed generational trauma, but none of them are abusive. It's all a petty one-sided conflict for MePhone4’s attention. Toilet doesn't know how to react to being thrown aside, so he develops a strange unrequited rivalry towards MePad. The thing is though! They make up! They communicate their feelings to one another!

Is Toilet hateable under popular perspective? Probably. He's clumsy, loud, not very bright and made for you to either hate him or laugh at him. But that doesn't mean that he isn't a character worth analyzing. He deserves love, which he never receives, even after 14 episodes of dealing with what he deals with. I know it's silly to sympathize with a fictional toilet, but he really does deserve more development and closure for his arc, and as Minuet has expressed in the past, MePad (character) has what it takes to break the cycle and provide him with the affection that he needs. (We're guiding ourselves based off our own analyses of II S2 and canon itself, btw. Not any theories.)

Conclusion: Leave ToiPad and its shippers alone. It is not a problematic ship. Neither of them are abusive, Justin is not uncomfortable with ships of the characters they voice, and it is most definitely Not inc*stuous and/or p*dophilic.

i do not agree with any type of harassment or death threats sent to a person no matter that may have done. if they do something extremely illegal or messed up, i believe it's better to either report to the proper authorities, spread awareness under the notion to warn and protect others, and then stay away from the person.

it is not that hard to block a person, there's no need to spread hate. just simply do the right and decent thing. if people don't agree with me and you're into witch hunting, you're free to stay away from my blog.

so for clarification, i don't support the weird messed up stuff from pr-shippers (if that's what you call them), but i also won't go through extreme lengths such as the antis (the witch hunters and the death threat sendrers lol). i'd rather avoid taking sides and just stay away from content that makes me uncomfortable and i know is wrong.

Something so weird just happened. I was defending SNS by saying that what people might call "toxic" about their relationship was the violent aspect of their relationship, but that in the story it was shown that there’s a reason behind Naruto and Sasuke’s violent dynamic. They’re rivals, but their rivality is portrayed as healthy. Sometimes when they fight the story shows us that it’s because they don’t know better, and that they don’t properly know how to express themselves in another way.

So, all was good, until someone commented that they agreed with me because I "understood that there were times in a story were problematic subjects were considered healthy when the story tells us it’s normal. So it’s stupid when antishippers complain about a story containing big age gape, incest or lollies when it’s said it’s normal in this story’s universe. Same thing with violence in Naruto"

I was so confused. Like, did they seriously compared Naruto and Sasuke’s relationship to inc*st and lollies??

I feel like this kind of person is just insecure with reading stories containing big age gape, inc*st, r*pe etc… So they need the story to tell them "It’s okay in my universe, so you don’t have to feel guilty about it". But Naruto doesn’t just say "Violence is good and completely normalized in my world :)". On the contrary, it tries to make the readers ask question about the violence in the story, to reflects how they can understand violence IRL. Is violence necessary? Is violence justified in some cases? Isn’t talking with your opponents instead of fighting them better?

On the other hand, I don’t see how you can make your readers ask themselves anything about stuff like lollies or p*do couples. Isn’t that obvious tha

To me it sounds like that person is talking about other things entirely and it has nothing to do with ‘Naruto’. Perhaps they personally are annoyed by said ‘anti shippers’ that don’t support their preferences and experienced arguments surrounding those topics... Keep Naruto and Sasuke out of it though... 

Yeah, it makes no sense to compare the Narutoverse to a story that obeys other internal rules of causality (and says certain things are okay). Those aren’t the same thing and shouldn’t be compared then. It is fine to make comparisons when it matters, but with a consistent reality like the Narutoverse (which means the Setting lets the characters interact with the world consistently like Chakra control and values) Kishimoto created discipline and is true to itself. It (story) is a metaphor to reality but not the same thing therefore you can’t really judge it all the same from a realistic standpoint... because it’s not. And if done well, an audience can absorb themselves into a character, their world and decide from their point of view what is best at any given time. Not their own. 

When someone favors one character over the other they decide from that character’s perspective- that’s usually what happens and it is proven by neuroscience. With that, everyone has their own internal framing that happened before that though. (Read: they lived life.) That’s probably why that person made a connection themselves surrounding these topics even though to the rest of humanity... that doesn’t make sense :’) There are of course the people who passive-aggressively comment under everything SNS-related thing something along the lines of: “oh wow look they are soooooo cute, like brothers!! 🥰” And don’t mean it at all apart from wanting to push the brother-narrative that doesn’t exist. 

Then it really isn’t a question whether something is ‘healthy/normal’ or not unless that was the story's intention, but whether a character’s next course of action makes sense, is believable and is something that is supported. Tbh, it is up to the creator to make its world as believable as possible. Combine 'Naruto' with its heavy Shonen-framing where actually the most violent things like child-trafficking, human-testing and mass-murder get glossed over... did any of you remember the thousands of people who died during that first day of war? Or are we all focussed on Neji only? (That’s fair. And makes sense but is not realistic.) 

What did get challenged in ‘Naruto’ over and over again, as you say too, is whether violence was necessary and how do we overcome these struggles? (Shinobi society.) Indeed, what is justified and accepted in that world/what is not? Naruto’s entire quest later is to find ‘peace’ because of it and so is Sasuke. He doesn’t even know how but he tries his best, Sasuke has a plan but it requires sacrifce. Naruto and Sasuke weren’t going to figure anything out by sharing a lemonade and trauma’s on a sunny day and negotiate their intentions moving forward. That’s out of character and doesn’t fit the world. You’ll have to look at the emotional aspect of it and their (Naruto/Sasuke’s) battles always are emotional first. And these emotions are just as, if not more, prominent than the physical battle. Because it matters why they fight.

Starting off, I don't ship Graylu or Grayza (Nalu and Jerza ftw!) but I believe Gray had crush on both Lucy and Erza once. Gemini revealed in Oracion Seis arc that Lucy is Gray's type. And if we try to find similarities in Erza and Lucy, there are quite a few :

Both are level-headed and mature while also being absolute dorks at times. Of course, they're the prettiest too. They both have what it takes to keep the team in check, they're passionate about their friends and lastly, they both respect the boundaries of their respective lovers(Natsu and Jellal) despite both having been shown to have clear crush them. They are willing to wait for the right time.

That's Gray's type. Lucy and Erza are everything Juvia isn't nor can she ever be. She isn't Gray's type at all. She has been forced upon him. She doesn't have many friends, she doesn't respect personal boundaries, she is over possessive to the extent of attacking and wishing bad for others, she's even jealous of Wendy, a kid who happens to be like Gray's younger sibling, Frosch, an exceed even. Anyway, the thing you're looking at objectively here is that Gray seems to canonically have had a crush on both Lucy and Erza, and I agree, despite also not shipping Grayza! Gray thought both were strong and beautiful. It shows us hints at a crush on Erza in that one episode where Gray thought she looked beautiful while she was sleeping, and maybe the flashback one where Gray kinda blushed as kids when Erza idr cried or something. And then yeah, you mention it right, Gemini showed how highly Gray views Lucy and how she's the "whole package". And then throughout the show, Gray shows how hot he finds Lucy, and blushes several times, like the time he was looking for her in her house, or in the Tower of Heaven, or in the Key of the Starry Heaven arc where he imagined her in an outfit made of paper etc. Anyway, those were just some supporting examples of what you were saying.

I totally agree with you about the similarities Erza and Lucy share! Oh wow, every point is just so perfect. They're both smart, hard-working, lively and fun, they're strong, and they're loving. And you're darn right that they're the prettiest of them all! I especially love how you bring attention to how they are both willing to wait for the right time for their respective partners! That's such a good point: they put their love interest above their own desires.

And yeah, that's the exact opposite of what juvia is. she puts what she wants first, disregarding anyone it hurts, namely most of all Gray, the fricking object of her affection. That goes against all the morals the whole story of Fairy Tail tries to extol onto its watchers and readers, where you should be giving it all for your friends, that you'll put them first. But Mashima decided to completely dump that moral when it comes to juvia and make selfish, jealous, delusional, obsessive romantic "love" a virtue.

I agree, there is no reason juvia exists. she shouldn't in the first place. she doesn't make Gray's life better (she's literally ruining him), she doesn't make Fairy Tail a better place (she antagonizes all the women, even literal children and creatures of other species like you mention, Anon), and she certainly doesn't make her own life better through being a horrible person and manipulating and forcing an unwilling man to be her lover (not that I care that she's ruining her own life, it just goes to show that she's helping no one out).

Something I don’t understand is what these anti-pro shipping people expect the rest of us to do. I went straight to the source to look it up for myself, trust me, most of them are just people who are like "I give a f*ck what you ship", that's the entire jist of it. Some pro-shippers are even super uncomfortable with the whole toxic/inc*st/p*do ships that people accuse them of liking. A lot of these people are also children who are being outright targeted by s*ic*de baiters and other which by the way ISN'T OK THEY'RE LITERALLY KIDS. Some of which are using pro-ship as like their so-called "personal therapy" for things that have happened to them, which I'm not sure actually helps but those people claim it does. /nbr

There are people who don't even identify as pro-ship that write things related to "dead dove" content (if you don't know what that is don't worry about and DONT look it up, seriously it can be some seriously messed up stuff) who don't get the same response as pro-shipping does.

I'm not even defending anyone here because like the people who ship the toxic/inc*st/p*do shit, and even the negative stigma seriously triggers me due to the research I've done on the subject. People on both sides are like super negative and it's really just not something to get mixed up into because no matter what side you're on you're going to get some hate for it.

I'm going to send this in under anon bc someone I look up to was hostile about this subject and I aint about to be put on some hate list for going against the "popular" opinion. Sorry if I sounded super hostile/negative or something. I've asked this same question before and received the same negative responses, but I still scrolled around to see what pro-shippers are bc I didn't want to trust the first source I came to because there are different sides to this.

I love your Steve/Bucky/Stucky opinions and your entire blog because you are 100% correct. Everything about Endgame was awful, especially Steve’s ending. It was a disservice to the characters, the fans and the story as a whole. Nothing made sense. And the entire MCU is crap, too. It has been since Age of Ultron.

I’ve shipped Stony since Avengers 2012. I think there’s def a middle ground between Tony stans and Steve stans as far as Civil War is concerned but I’m not trying to get into discourse. I just want you to know that not all Stony shippers suck and your opinions about Imposter Steve and the greater MCU are perfect. Please don’t hate me lol.
