All Addictions Are Misery, Including The Causes
Tumblr media
Drink, Drugs, Over Eating... and Gambling. The Misery's Always The Same. But so is The Cause  Over the past few months we have all seen the advertisements on TV about Gambling Addiction. Just in case you haven't caught or don't know yet if you have I'll just remind you of the most infamous one. It's the one which is a sort of cheap(ish) knock-off of the first Rocky film that basically consists of the training scenes before eventually going into a freeze frame then having a voice over warning about the dangers of addiction to gambling  Yet before we go on endlessly about the dangers of addiction itself what I have always said, and will always stand by is, what causes it. First and foremost and let's be absolutely honest with ourselves for a minute now, no-one and I mean no-one in their right mind wakes up one day and decides that they ate going to ear constantly, drink themselves into oblivion or take no end of harmful substances  For example, here's a few reasons; mental health, bereavement, peer pressure or just an attempt to escape reality, normally one that we're desperate to get away from. Another one, and I suppose that you could argue in that there's possibly some kind of irony in it.. the ever infamous money woes. According to some recorded statistics around 0.5% of people are known to have experienced gambling addiction in one way or another. That is roughly around 246,000 individuals that suffer from gambling addiction. Around 3.8%, (2.2 Million) are said to be at risk. In some ways you could easily argue that it's down to the individual's own choice when it comes to the issue, others could just as easily argue that it's down to companies advertising gambling itself. I say it's probably half and half. However, let's not kid ourselves when it comes to this. For all any of us know addiction itself is an age old issue that has always been with us in one or another.  You can easily argue has to why this has only just only come to our attention within the last few months but the sad truth is it's been there for decades so it's hardly a new thing. Look back through the years that cases like this have appeared in the public eye therefore you can't say that it's now a phenomenon either  Going back some years now, around my pre-teen teenage years, I remember seeing billboards advertising smoking and gambling. I was fully aware of the potential long-term dangers of smoking. It was only when I was in my later teens when the cigarette advertising boards were still around I began to wonder why they were still here there and everywhere when everyone knew the risks. Yes, I do view smoking as an addiction and why not, some of the behavioural traits for addiction is there. Here's why I think this. During my school and college years there were people who I knew who smoked and whenever they were didn't have any cigarettes and were desperate for one and were unable to get any they'd become bad tempered. After a further few minutes they'd go around pleading for a cigarette, becoming more irritable if they weren't able to get one off anyone. It was basically like this need for a fix. And I do remember on a couple of occasions being asked if I could buy them some.  Well seeing as I'm strictly a Non-Smoker you can guess what my answer was. (the opposite of yes) So you can take from that what you will. But one of the big questions I ask myself is this; if the companies who know that there are people with addictions to gambling, even  those at risk, then why the hell do they still continue to promote themselves? I know that they all carry warnings saying to gamble responsibly or to not do it when you're in certain situations but this is where the hypocrisy can just as easily be argued. In other words you are warned about the potential problems of addiction and further temptation. It's a bit like putting an object in front of you, warning you about the potential risks yet leaving it in front of you and hoping that you will succumb to some form of temptation. Sitting, waiting and not caring if you fall deeper and deeper to the point where you genuinely feel as though you've hit rock bottom. You are completely enticed, hook line and sinker. So yes, we have all looked at addicts and had negative thoughts about them, even myself, sneered at them blaming them for their own stupidity for getting hooked in the first place.  But before we criticise them for where they're going let's look at how they got there and hopefully change the psychological trajectory  Read the full article

This is my first f1 fanfiction so any feedback/suggestions are very welcome or if you just want to add comments, reactions - anything goes!! Thank you for reading and enjoy :)
Chapter one: A staring contest with an attractive stranger ...
It was raining in London. Not that that was out of the ordinary - even in the beginning days of July. Today the weather had decided to imitate that of mid-March, the rain crashing down like the heavens had opened up above and the wind cheekily chasing tourists and commuters indoors then proceeding to race eagerly through the streets, nipping at any ankles of those who were lagging behind the rest.
Lando Norris was out with his trainer when the rain started, enjoying the freedom of a 2 week break before the highly anticipated British Grand Prix. They rushed down the alleyway they had found themselves on; until they came across a little coffee shop tucked away in the corner - 'The Little London Stop.' Jon nodded to confirm to Lando that this would be just fine - as he opened the door, a small bell rang just above his head and instantly they were hit by a comforting warmth and the smell of freshly made coffee.
He quickly slid onto one of the benches, facing out onto the shop. It was typically London, designed with someone's Instagram feed in mind, plants hung precariously from the rafters along with many singular light bulbs that casted at atmospheric glow around the room.
Opposite him, on the other side of the room sat the only other person in the shop, she sat with her back to them. Her messy mousy brown hair tumbled in waves down her back, her gaze on the rain rushing down the alleyway - her chin resting on the heel of her hand.
Georgie had been sitting in that exact spot for longer than she would care to admit. Escaping the pestering grasp of her best friend and roommate Maisie; they were both photographers - partners in an online business they set up when they first left college as they prepared to take on the world. Pre-covid it had flourished and the pair had been travelling up and down the country, from events like weddings to festivals. Post-covid however - this was where their problems had started and why Georgie was currently hiding in a coffee shop. Work had become as dry as her love life, events had been cancelled for another year and wedding guest numbers had been limited. For weeks they had been sending their portfolios to any event organiser they could find and for weeks they kept being turned away.
She tore her eyes from the flooding streets and back to her open laptop - she was completely stuck, where to even start? Georgie nibbled on the on her bottom lip and sighed before rubbing her hands over her face - she was really looking for a miracle to happen.
Lando was completely intrigued by the girl. It wasn't until Jon snapped his fingers in front of Lando's face that he realised he had been staring.
"Right, sorry." Lando mumbled, a red flush creeping up his neck and he moved his gaze to the wooden table, wringing his fingers together. "What were you saying?"
Jon chuckled at his young boy antics and shook his head, "I wasn't, you were staring and it was weird. I picked you up this green smoothie - lots of vitamins and-" But Lando had switched off again, he couldn't help himself as his eyes locked back onto where they had been before. It was like something was drawing him to her - hell, he didn't even know what she looked like.
"Are you going to go and speak to her?" Jon's voice broke his trance yet again.
"Wha-what?" Lando looked up at his trainer, his innocent eyes widening at the thought. "I-I-"
Jon scoffed and rolled his eyes, "You are such a teenager."
"I'm not a teenager." Lando hit back, "I'm 21. I can drink in the US now, you know."
"Then start acting like it." Jon scolded but the corners of his mouth quirked up, he had known Lando for years and he had not changed once. A hopeless romantic at heart but acted like a deer caught in the headlights as soon as anyone of the opposite gender even glanced his way. Any girl would be lucky to have him but unfortunately for Lando he always found himself drawn to the type that would take his heart whole and would leave, shattering it into millions of pieces for Jon to find and piece back together again. It was through no fault of the girls in question, they would make their intentions very clear but Lando - being who he was - would always jump head first without looking ahead or the consequences of his actions.
On the plus side, Lando came back stronger each time but it left him with an even stronger longing for that care and affection that everyone around him seemed to have.
His heart raced as he looked over at Jon, a determined look was set on his face. "Fine. I'll do it." He stood up, legs wobbling slightly as the adrenaline flooded through his veins - he had cleared the table when reality decided to walk through the door. He turned on his heels and sat back down. "Nope. Maybe another day." His voice wavered slightly.
Jon looked at him with sympathy and slight second hand embarrassment - not that Lando needed to know that.
Georgie looked over her shoulder at the commotion happening behind her - there were two young men sitting across the room from her. One was clearly older than the other and was looking at him in utter bemusement - she followed his gaze...
Georgie inhaled sharply, she was met by a pair of crystal blue eyes - of which lit up when he realised that she had looked over. Georgie simply didn't know what to do with herself as she seemed to be stuck in a staring contest with an incredibly attractive stranger. She managed to tear her eyes away to look at him properly; a mop of dark brown curls sat dripping onto the table (still wet from the torrential downpour), an olive complexion and an innocent sparkle in his crystal blue eyes. She offered him a shy smile, a rose tinge coating her cheeks. He gave her a lopsided grin in response.
There was an overwhelming feeling that drew Georgie to this stranger, it wasnt anything she had experienced before - not even when she had been with him.
A cold chilling suddenly rushed down her spine, almost like she had been standing in the rain falling outside. A pang of guilt filled her stomach, she dropped her gaze and bit her lip. How could she ever think of him like that, compare him to a stranger she didnt even know the name of.
A ring broke her train of thought, her phone lit up with Maisie's name. She inhaled slowly to ground her feelings before answering, trying to sound as normal as possible.
"Hey Maise -"
"I've done it." She heard Maisie shout down the phone, followed by a relieved laugh.
"Done what, sorry." Georgie prompted, rubbing her eyes. She could feel the boys' eyes on her, resisting the urge to turn around; she closed the lid of her laptop and placed it in her bag.
"I've only gone and gotten us an event to go to this weekend." Maisie replied as casually as she could muster. Georgie paused. A large grin that would challenge the Cheshire cats'.
"Where and how?" Georgie felt a weight lift from her shoulders, it didn't matter what Maisie had signed them up for, it was a start. A fresh start.
"Look, I have a call with them any minute so I'll have to explain when you get back. It's at the Goodwood festival of speed." Maisie paused.
"Goodwood Festival of speed." Georgie echoed - she could hear ringing in the background.
"Got to go, final things to sort out. I'll see you later." With that she hung up, leaving a delighted Georgie frozen in place, until she found her senses and packed up as fast as she could. All thoughts of the boy across the room - gone.
He sat, puzzled, as he watched her rush out the door and into the rain - calling out a muffled 'thank you' as the door swung shut behind her. His brows drew together as he looked into his lap, before saying quietly to Jon: "It was the Goodwood Festival of Speed she just said, didn't she?"
"Yes." Jon answered shortly, looking down at him in fascination.
"Isn't that where I am this weekend?" Lando looked up, hope swelled in his chest.
"Yes, it is."
Lando looked longingly out of the window, beaming. He knew it was silly to get so hopeful - there were going to be thousands upon thousands swarming around Goodwood. He stood up and turned to Jon - "Lets go."
"But you haven't drank your smoothie -"
Lando was already at the door, bouncing on the balls of his feet. Jon grabbed the smoothie and tittered, following after him.
You only live once, Lando thought. As it turns out he would get another chance this Saturday and this time he wasn't blowing it.

We're going to develop a fan-made Season 4 for H2O: Just Add Water! Here's how you can help.
(For the Google Doc version of this post, click here.)
H2O: Just Add Water: Proposal for Fanmade Season 4
Background on the Series
The 2000’s were an early breeding ground for teen dramas. There are bound to be millions of twenty to thirty year-olds who can recall the rapturous tales of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars, the Gilmore Girls, and a whole slew of live-action, plot-heavy shows that appealed to its adolescent fanbase. And while most of these television series have either been immortalized as cinematic classics or revived for more hijinks, there are a few stories that have slipped under the radar of internet nostalgia, survived only by its compact, yet dedicated fanbases.
The particular show that I am referring to is one that you may or may not be familiar with, as it was passed around a number of networks since its inception in 2006. If you do recall it, odds are that you’ve either repressed the memory of this show altogether up to this point, or you still periodically binge the show to see if it still holds up.
And yeah, it does, as evidenced by the 1,500 members that still frequent its Reddit page and the plethora of posts that you can find on Tumblr. Heck, there’s a thriving Discord server that boasts about 160 active members.
The series that I’m talking about is none other than H2O: Just Add Water, an Australian fantasy drama series that aired from 2006 to 2010.
Now, anyone in the TikTok community will probably recognize the memes that spawned from this show, and in that way, its cultural impact has already been secured. But fans of the series will tell you that H2O: JAW is much more than jokes about condensation or exaggerated Australian accents.
It’s the budding story of three teenage girls who, after a bizarre, chance event, become mermaids whenever they come into contact with water. This presents a number of unique challenges for our female leads as they learn to accept their aquatic developments and grapple with keeping the secret under wraps. Eventually, the girls become closer to one another, combatting new threats using their powers and unravelling the mysteries of Mako Island, the isle where their journey first began.
The second season was supposed to be the final season of the show, but it was brought back for a third season by popular demand, a last minute decision that unfortunately did not work to its benefit. Season 3 did add some interesting lore and character development to the series, but it suffered from the absence of beloved icons and also created unnecessary conflicts between characters to make up for a lack of preplanning. As a result, the conclusion of the series was very bittersweet.
Several fans have taken their grievances online and have voiced their support for a continuation of the original show- one that would ideally resolve some of the core complaints that audiences had with the finale. These desires had not gone unnoticed by the production team who, in 2013, created a spin-off series called Mako: Island of Secrets. The four-season Netflix show featured an entirely new cast of characters and settings and branded the series as a new, separate adventure from the likes of Just Add Water.
Yet, this show didn’t offer the closure that many fans craved. Even though the series was received well, its ending in 2016 didn’t spark the same public response as its predecessor. It wasn’t just a snippet of the universe that the fandom wanted. It was the fantastic array of characters from the 2000’s show that made the series special. A continuation of the original series felt like the most authentic outlet for replicating the magic that was H2O.
The elusive Season 4 that fans have been pining for is seeming less and less likely as the years pass by. 2020 marked the ten year anniversary of the end of Just Add Water, and in that time, the actors and actresses have moved on to do bigger, better things. They have grown up, established families, and pursued much more prospective career ventures that should be celebrated and respected by the fanbase.
Yet, that doesn’t mean that the fans can’t continue the story themselves.
Origin of Concept
Remember the Discord server that I mentioned? Let me properly introduce it to you.
The Fish Girlz server is hosted by a number of avid fans of the show, many of whom are committed to analyzing H2O lore and developing projects based around the show’s premise. (There’s even a game in the works, and it is looking really fricking cool!)
Anyways, in April of 2020, a few server regulars began discussing what they would have wanted to see had the show been renewed for a fourth season. Some great ideas were tossed around, which prompted the user yetAnotherUser and I to consider what it would take to make a fanmade fourth season a reality. Obviously, live-action was out of the question, as it would be way too expensive and unrealistic given that we are all internet strangers without a production budget or professional swimming experience. Then the conversation shifted to animation, which seemed much more plausible.
The Plan
And so began our initiative- recruit other H2O fans with expertise in script writing, voice acting, sound design, storyboarding, animation, visual effects, and editing so that we can make this project possible. We’ve subdivided this project into various phases to ensure that different objectives are met during each key period of development.
If all goes according to plan, the pilot episode of this fan made reboot would enter post-production in September of this year and be published on Youtube sometime in 2022.
The pilot would take place a few months following the original conclusion of the series, with most if not all of the original characters returning for the season to defend against a new threat to Mako Island and its inhabitants. The plot will also focus on granting closure to characters and plot points that were left to collect dust for the past ten years, and will pay close attention to the fanbase’s wants and wishes.
For Phase 1 of the project, we are seeking out scriptwriters, revisionists, and concept artists for the pre-planning stages of development. If you are interested in joining the team or have any questions, feel free to DM me at Quarilaie#3085 or co-creator yetAnotherUser#3117 on Discord. And while you’re at it, be sure to join the Fish Girlz server! It is definitely worth your time if you are really invested in the show.
Deadlines for joining the project will be announced shortly on the r/JustAddWater Reddit and Fish Girlz server.
Thank you for reading, and stay snazzy!

I've surpassed a quarter of a century living here. It felt like an eternity, like I've lived several lives already. I know around each quarter of a century saturn will return to the same place it was when you were born but saturn hasn't made it's return for me just yet.
To be honest almost every year my birthday depresses me. I have been having existential crises since I was 7 years old. I remember one night I was in bed with my mom staring at some old victorian wallpaper and having a moment of awareness that was outside of who I was. I asked her "Why am I here? Why was I born in this time? And also in this place and country when I could have been born to any parents in any place on this earth. Why do I exist?" I could imagine from her perspective to have your child ask you this at 10pm is like overwhelming but that thought and emotion never left me for 19 years.
I never asked to be here.
I often feel like wherever I came from I miss it a lot. I feel like there was some kind of mistake and that I've fallen from some other existence that was nicer and now I am on this dying planet constricted by time and decay with creatures that only care about consuming everything they can. There is so much potential here and so much to be given but it's been spoiled over time, claimed by violence and anyone who tried to change it would get assassinated.
I remember when I was in nursery school (I still have so many vivid childhood memories) and I was graduating with my class into pre-K and we had to do an assembly where we told middle schoolers what we aspired to be when we grew up and I remembered my answer was Jesus and I probably remembered this so vividly cause my teacher had an Episode about it. Like: You can't say that!! Do you know what you said?? Like she wanted me to understand the gravity of my statement but I didn't understand why it was so shocking. I am Obviously not christian, haha if you know me you know that, but as a child I understood that someone like Jesus was selfless and cared about people even if they were outcasted and unloved and cared about fixing the corruption of the government and he was killed for it. I didn't understand much of christianity as a child and I HATED going to church but even when I was 6 I knew what it meant to be selfless and to give unconditional love because sometimes doing acts of kindness can inspire others to heighten their awareness yet I lost respect for religion when I was a teen cause I saw how prophets' simple messages of being thoughtful were weaponized cause nothing on this plane can ever stay uncorrupted for power. Anyway I said I wanted to be a motorcyclist. I mean as a 5 year old I just said it as 'motorcycle guy' and the teacher thought that was good enough. I still think motorcycles are cool haha.
It wasn't until I was an adolescent that I was hyper aware of death in every way. It was the worst time of my life. Everything idealistic I felt about this world was wiped away and I became aware of the realities of racism, sexism, everything -ism that made me feel like I wasn't allowed to enjoy anything. I could go on and on about the effects of racism and sexism and how my gender and sexuality felt like a prison and how once again I never decided on any of these things but it felt like I was out of place and on top of that there were consequences for being out of place. As a girl especially finding a guy to love you was something they brainwash in you early and if you couldn't you wouldn't have value. As a girl, you always looked externally for people to validate you with their love cause you weren't allowed to love yourself. Living in a body that wasn't the right race, gender and sexuality made me feel hopeless and full of hate and that I would never be accepted. I was suicidal and I felt like it wouldn't make a difference if I ended myself then or waited cause I wasn't living life anyway and I knew some inevitable death was coming. Like a huge storm in the horizon. It was the time of my life reoccuring dreams of the apocalypse were coming. Night after night I would have dreams running around in cities avoiding mobs while heat waves burned everything or tsunamis came or some plague effected millions creating some zombie like reality. I never enjoyed being a teenager and it lead into my young adult life. I always wanted to go out and be carefree, do stupid things, get drunk, have a young love and not worry about the world yet there was always some constraint like strict parents or not being the ideal woman to 'deserve' these things and I felt like I was wasting the one part of my life I could enjoy before the global darkness arrived.
I always felt like I was born at the end of something. Even when I finally had the chance to go out people would tell stories about how great certain places to go out where or places to experience, or urban cultures that could be found in some areas but they 'no longer exist'. 'People don't do that anymore'. "It used to be wild but now it's strict". "The place was torn down for condos". "It got commercialized and tickets are expensive, but the culture isn't even there so it's not worth it". Nothing lasts forever and neither did my adolescence. It was the one time I tried to give what this society have to offer a chance and I accept it wasn't meant for me. I was born in the wrong time when everything was ending.
And though this world has given me constaint restraints I still am trying to make the most of this existence. I've accepted that we live in some kind of hell and it's inevitable for suffering to end. People could give messages of compassion and it would be weaponized to control others or commercialized to sell overharvested crystals and herbs in huge businesses. To live we have to eat other living sentient beings cause that's how energy is transferred unless you are a plant that can do photosynthesis but they can still suck water and minerals from their neighbors for their needs. There is no balance here. I find living exhausting. I still don't know how I got here.
I did ask my mom a year or so ago on my birthday why she had me. She just said 'it was the thing to do'. So I am alive cause it was a thing people do, just have children I guess. I wonder if I am just a product of my body like am I a conscious being because of the energy generated in this sack of flesh or do I also have some element of me that came from a world beyond this one. If I am just a physical being then why do I constantly feel out of place for nearly two decades. I could describe it as a kind of dysphoria for my being, like I don't feel like I am a woman but I definitely don't feel like I was meant to be a human being and that there was a mistake.
I know that time can reveal some truths and I always dream about using my suffering to create some kind of balance here. Maybe it was a good thing that I feel I would never find love so I wouldn't get confined to some relationship where a boy would dictate my life. I stopped caring about being validated by others and I tried to focus on validating myself. It was probably a good thing that I was shut at home and unable to go out because what is conventially seen as a good time is self destructive and I shouldn't be trying to escape reality. Maybe just maybe it is a good thing that I was born into a world that will meet it's end soon because I am already unattached to my life here but maybe I should use my energy to be selfless like the people I looked up to when I was a child and try to bring positive change even if it means being assassinated cause I would either die by the hands of corrupted forces or by mother nature and it's better to try then to wait around to die because that's another form of suffering and being confined.
---
For years I wanted to be an architect and urban planner. If we want to back track after I got shamed for wanting to be jesus at around 8 I was obsessed with being an astronaut. I wanted to see if I could explore other worlds out there and find something beyond earth that was a place that was full of adventure and escape. After learning how literally everything up there can kill you and that it required math I was into robotics in my early teens. I thought creating a reflection of sentient life was amazing and could open up doors to how we understood ourselves but I literally had teachers in my middleschool repeat how it was difficult for women to succeed in science and it was hard and Everything in life was hard for me then and I just wanted to conform and please others so I dropped it and didn't really care about my future until the middle of highschool where they pressure you to start thinking about it to apply for college. I think what made me want to be an urban planner was that my escape was day dreaming and it was in late middleschool I would day dream about my ideal society that resembled absolutely nothing close to this one. I knew it was far fetched so I just pursued something I knew I was good at doing since I did it in my spare time which was game design. It was really an excuse and something fun to study to appease everyone that I was in college so I wouldn't kill myself studying some other boring garbage but it was also a cop out since I was too afraid to pursue urban planning since it's intensely political and I felt like I could never go far. Instead now I am a bartender, another skill I find enjoyable in my free time that's now killing me as a job that I absolutely hate. I am about to go into reception which I know will be worse but it will just pay bills.
I think this year after 25 years of just 'living' I should try to pursue what I care about. I am now in a place where education is cheaper and they care about society and the environment so it could be feasible and less of a risk then in the US where I could end up hundreds of thousands in debt for chasing a dream. I have met so many amazing people that made me feel less alone and have the same drive and passions as me and maybe we can learn and build together. Even if my life feels like some kind of accident or something that was done to consolidate a marriage it doesn't have to be wasted. I still am not a fan of being here but I am happy to say that my 26th birthday was the first after YEARS that I have not woken up depressed and I think it's because its a shift for me and maybe finally I won't be constrained.

Purchasing the Best Mobile Phone for your Young Adults Is Not Easy
In case you have small children and are usually hiding the cellphone throughout your place, and then be spotted by your teenagers minutes later, you are aware how much of an issue it is to wish to offer them a smart phone, just not yours. It could be much worse, I think. A month ago, was his turn to use the cellphone. Right until fairly recently, it was suggested that father and mother avoid showing kids under 2 screens of any sort, including TV, iPads, or phones. In 2016, it slightly eased the guidelines. My husband and I violated this guideline a long time ago. I don't remember whenever we first cradled a cell phone before his eyes, but over the last couple of months, we've watched in horror as my child has developed a full-blown dependence on phones, a long time before he's also old enough to own one. Over the last decade, very much has been written about the great screen time debate: how often should our children be exposed to screens, and at what age? As recently as Oct 2019, a paper published a feature that colored a dark vision of kids and screens, with a quote from a Facebook professional assistant stating that only bad stuff lurks inside our gadgets. After going through the story, my husband and I went into 100 % stress mode and implemented a rule in our house where no one is allowed to give our new son a cell phone. For the moment, this has kept the devil at bay. However, I know there should come a time when I will give in to the inevitable and buy my son his first mobile phone. The potential already makes me stressed. Relating to a 2016 report, 72 percent of children between the ages of 12 and 18 have their own mobile phone, whilst a 2017 survey shows that nearly 45 percent of children get their have cell phone program between the age range of 10 and 13. In linked households those that have more than three products, kids get their first tablet when they are 5 years of age, and their first telephone at age 6. Nowadays, many couples with children are placing tech in kids' hands when they can hold them. However when it involves what kinds of phones parents should purchase their kids, the marketplace offers very few options: There is no iPhone comparative for kids, and there by no means has been. For the most part, children are stuck with their parents' hand-me-down smartphones, and the responsability is on the mother or father to install the necessary parental adjustments. Therefore, why hasn't the market efficiently made a phone for children? And if it do, what would such a device actually appear to be? While couples with children tend to be shamed for using monitors to amuse their students or watch over them by proxy, many adults will agree that presenting their a kid a smart phone is also part and parcel of being a accountable parent in 2019. Ultimately, a smart mobile phone for teens should be as strong as you possibly can, probably it would have some way to text when there is a school crisis or some other type of unforeseen emergency, or not really allow them to turn off their navigation or delete text messages. Others suggest that such a device should be public social media-free. No picture no internet is the point we held hearing from couples. Without a camera or online connectivity, young kids cannot take selfies or engage with social media, two activities parents are desperate to control. Although tablets have already been effectively publicized to kids, efforts to develop mobile phones for young adults have nearly universally failed. We have seen a lot of cell phones for children over the years and they're all junk. In 2014, one teenagers' tech business introduced the Kurio Google android cell phone, which was designed to operate and look just like a grown-up smartphone, although with safety product features and use limits to pay all situations. While pretty bland-looking, the phone had all the things an uneasy parent would have dreamed of: it blocked 415 million internet sites, allowed father and mother to remotely view text messages and call logs, and provided period limits about apps long before Apple introduced similar features. It also included a customizable in case of emergency form, offering the child's allergic reaction information and blood type. And in 2017, VTech, a gadget organization, revealed the KidiBuzz, a smart phone for kids between the age groups of 5 and 11 which allows kids to send and receive texts, photos, and voice messages. The youngsters mobile phone was a marvelous flop and it had been abandoned the same year it had been unveiled. The unit was expensive to produce, but since it was not top quality, it could not really be sold at an effective price, it had been not Apple or Samsung, and the age group the smartphone was aimed at, pre-tweens/tweens, is quite brand and look-conscious. In the mean time, the KidiBuzz offers 32 percent one-star testimonials in Amazon, with a single commenter observing that it doesn't even make a good paperweight. Area of the issue with child-focused phones is functionality: several devices occupy an amorphous grey space among a plaything and tool. The KidiBuzz, for instance, gives features like games and apps, but does not even let users place calls. Couples with children searching for smart smart phones for kids on Amazon may also come across dozens upon a large number of nonfunctional play telephone items, products that look like mobile phones but are actually toys which come equipped with numerous ringtones and blinking lights. An extra added challenge is that products marketed as kid-friendly, have a built-in expiration time. There's very little activity going on in the child-specific space, because it simply doesn't range well. You're discussing a very small segment of it: kids age range 4 to 9 or 8 to 12, etc. And it's really likely even smaller than that, because at a certain age I don't believe kids want the special smart phone. They need the same gadget you are utilizing. More often than not, the reality is the fact that devices people want to use will be the devices from the big producers. Why build something that's purpose-built and an individual model of the device when you could essentially consider any maker's design and work with a parental settings app to help control that? However, there's true anxiety about giving developing kids access to products that are nothing in short supply of addictive to grown adults. And even more research has surfaced linking excessive screen time for you to, among other activities, sadness, reduced sleep, and speech postpone in newborns. All which has pushed a small number of entrepreneurs to generate choice solutions for children. The primary concern with offering kids smart phones, is that, for lack of an improved term, it's such an attractive, glossy device, you want to download games, open the web. That is almost inherent to the phone. I feel it even myself in my own smart phone. It's an extremely effective point. The first iteration from the Light Phone was designed to be used less than possible: it might place telephone calls, and basically nothing more. The forthcoming Light Phone 2 may also allow users text. It is one of a small number of entries in the minimalist, or dumb telephone movement, which was spurred by an evergrowing concern about mobile phone dependency. Although not designed for kids, the Light Telephone has gotten significant amounts of curiosity from adults. Parents have a problem with this dilemma: they need a smart phone therefore the youngster can contact them within an emergency, but Snapchat really scares them. The Jitterbug, which features a large display screen and larger type, is one more dumb mobile phone usually cited as a good option for teenagers - even though it was developed for seniors. The Jitterbug can make calls and send and receive text messages; at less than $50 for the flip cellphone version, it's also substantially cheaper than the Light Telephone 2, which has not shipped out however but happens to be priced at $280. Some manufacturers are bypassing mobile phones altogether by getting into the wearables marketplace. GizmoWatch, for instance, allows parents to monitor their kids' specific location and alerts when they business outside a specific radius; it also lets young adults textual content and make calls to up to 10 friends on the preprogrammed contact list, enabling parents in which to stay touch using their kids while curbing their display screen time. Without technically a wearable (though you can hook it to clothes with a carabiner-like item), the Relay, an identical to walkie-talkie device, can be an additional access in the kids' tech space. The device presents itself being a middle floor for less tech-savvy parents who are concerned about display time, but don't want to navigate the complicated world of parental control apps. There is no way to watch a bad YouTube video or seek out something unacceptable with the phone, because there is no display. Though devices just like the Relay and the GizmoWatch also appear to be exactly what these are: products for children. And that may be a issue. There's always some chance with wearables, yet I am a little reluctant to state they are gonna be a big vendor. The requirements in comparison to choice options is such that the influence tends to be fairly limited. I can get my kid a kid smartwatch, which they may or might not wear, or I can give them a phone. Smart watches, are not going to replace phones for young kids. Kids want more. They are swamped with messaging to remain connected continuously. This is the world kids are developing up in. Without a lot better answers, parents are mainly stuck passing off their worn out Androids or iPhones or buying an old cellphone, that still is priced at a huge selection of dollars. There is just a certain comfort and ease there because that is what father and mother have always used. Passing down our aged cellphones is certainly low-cost as well as the parental handles work fairly well. Children aren't some special animal that want special tools with regards to smart phones. They are little human beings, and I favor to respect them with regards to tech. And instead of creating services, producers have begun developing product features to create their adult-oriented products more youth-friendly. Apple's new iOS 12 parental settings include a Display Time feature, which allows you to set time limits for particular apps and track how much time they're spending on their cell phones. Google has announced Google Family Link, a free app which allows couples with children to monitor their kids' screen period as well seeing that remotely lock their devices if they are spending a lot of time using them. These types of software work-arounds aren't perfect - children are reportedly hacking Apple's Screen Time simply by changing enough time setting on their device, but they're a recognition that kids of a certain age want to possess a similar thing everyone else has. And if everybody else has an iPhone or an Android, many won't settle for anything less. But eventually the stress parents feel around what sorts of devices to buy their teens and when can also be a means of projecting anxieties about our very own complicated relationships with phones. The solution may possibly not be discovering the right device for our children, but wrangling our own impulses, especially because a few analysts claim that adults who are far too sidetracked by their devices are creating behavioral issues in their teens. Young Children will do what you do, not what you tell them to do. You must model good digital habits. Actually, a 2016 study found that although 76 percent of parents thought they were modeling great screen habits because of their kids, these were spending an average of nine hours each day with their displays, a lot more time than their teenagers were.
Tumblr media
When I pointed out that I had been spending a lot more period scrolling throughout my e-mail and Twitter than I used to be playing on the floor with my boy, I noticed that the concern wasn't with displays warping his fragile mind. It had been that I'd already allowed my telephone to bend mine. So nowadays, we try not to use our mobile phones at all in front of our son. This is a habit that can be easily shaped for old age and really depends upon the couples with children to keep our children away from smart phones until these people grasp responsibility.

How to Find the Perfect Smartphone for your Teens
My toddler is 2 years old, and his favorite plaything is usually my iPhone 7. We stash it almost everywhere: in back of fluffy teddies, among magazines, behind furniture. He finds it each time and toddles up to me, clutching it in his tiny fist and moans the minute I said no, he collapses onto the floor and complains. Maybe it's more painful, I think. A month ago, was his turn to tuck away the cellphone. There's very little activity going on in the child-specific space, because it just doesn't range well. You're talking about a very little segment of it: children ages 4 to 10 or 7 to 14, etc. And it's really potentially even smaller sized than that, because at a certain age I don't believe kids want the particular phone. They want the same device you are using. By and large, the reality is that the devices people desire to use are the devices coming from the big manufacturers. So why build anything that is motive-built and an individual model of these devices when you could essentially take any maker's style and use a parental handles app to greatly help control that? Still, there's true anxiousness around giving developing kids access to products that are nothing short of addictive to grown adults. And even more research has surfaced linking unnecessary display screen time for you to, among other things, unhappiness, reduced sleep, and speech postpone in newborns. All which has pushed a small number of entrepreneurs to create substitute solutions for children. The main problem with offering little children cell phones, is that, for insufficient an improved term, it's such a sexy, glossy device, you intend to download games, open the web. That's almost natural to the phone. Personally i think it even myself in my mobile phone. It is a very effective thing. The earliest version from the Light Phone was designed to be used as little as possible: it could place calls, and ultimately nothing else. The impending Light Phone 2 will also allow users textual content. It is among a small number of entries in the smart, or dumb mobile phone movement, which was spurred by a growing concern about phone addiction. While not designed for children, the Light Phone has gotten significant amounts of curiosity from parents. Couples with children struggle with this problem: they need a smartphone therefore the youngster can contact them in an emergency, but Snapchat really scares these people. find more information , which includes a substantial screen and larger type, is another dumb smart phone generally cited as an excellent choice for young kids - even though it was developed for elderly people. The Jitterbug can make telephone calls and receive and send text messages; at significantly less than $50 for the turn mobile phone version, it's also considerably cheaper compared to the Light Phone 2, which has not shipped out yet but is currently coming in at $300. Some producers are bypassing phones altogether by getting into the wearables marketplace. GizmoWatch, for instance, allows adults to monitor their children' location and alerts if they opportunity outside a particular radius; in addition, it lets young kids textual content and make calls to up to 10 friends on a preprogrammed contact list, enabling parents in which to stay touch with their kids while curbing their screen time. While not technically a wearable (if you can hook it to clothes having a carabiner-like item), the Relay, an identical to walkie-talkie gadget, can be an additional admittance in the kids' technology space. The device presents itself like a middle floor for much less tech-savvy parents who are concerned about display screen period, but don't wish to navigate the complex globe of parental control apps. There is no way to watch a poor YouTube video or search for something unacceptable using the phone, because there is no screen. But devices like the Relay and the GizmoWatch also look like exactly what these are: items for kids. And that may be a problem. Almost always there is some chance with wearables, but I'm just a little reluctant to say they're gonna be considered a big seller. The marketplace demand in comparison to choice options is in a way that the impact tends to be fairly limited. I can get my child a child smartwatch, that they may or might not use, or I can provide them with a phone. Smart watches, are not gonna substitute cell phones for young children. Children want more. They are inundated with messaging to stay connected constantly. This is actually the world kids are growing up in. With out a lot better alternatives, couples with children are largely caught up passing off their exhausted Androids or iPhones or buying a vintage smart phone, that still will cost hundreds of dollars. There's only a certain comfort level there because that's what mom and dad have always utilized. Handing down our old smart phones is usually low-cost as well as the parental handles work fairly well. Children aren't some unique animal that require special tools when it comes to phones. They are little humans, and I favor to respect them when it comes to tech. And instead of creating new products, producers have started adding features to create their adult-driven items more kids-friendly. Apple's new iOS 12 parental adjustments include a Screen Time feature, that allows you to set period limits for particular apps and monitor how much period they're spending on their cell phones. Google has launched Google Family members Link, a free of charge app which allows parents to monitor their children' screen time as well while wirelessly secure their products if they are spending a lot of time using them. All these program work-arounds aren't ideal - children are apparently hacking Apple's Screen Time simply by changing the time setting on the device, but they're a recognition that children of a certain age want to own a similar thing everyone else has. And if everyone else has an iPhone or an Android, many won't accept anything less. Yet ultimately the anxiety parents experience around what sorts of devices to get their teenagers and when may also be a way of projecting fears about our very own complicated interactions with phones. The answer may not be discovering the right device for our children, but wrangling our own impulses, especially because a few researchers say that parents who are excessively sidetracked by their gadgets are establishing behavioral issues in their teenagers. Kids will do what you do, not what you inform them to do. You have to model good digital habits. In fact, a 2015 study found that although 78 percent of parents thought these were modeling good screen habits for their kids, they were spending typically nine hours per day with their displays, far more time than their children were. When I pointed out that I used to be spending a lot more period scrolling throughout my e-mail and Twitter than I was playing on to the floor with my son, I understood that the concern was not with displays warping his delicate mind. It had been that I'd currently allowed my telephone to warp mine. So nowadays, we do not use our mobile phones at all in front of our son. That is a habit that may be easily designed for old age and really depends on the parents to keep our teens away from smart phones until these individuals understand responsibility.

The JUUL Industry: Why Such A Tiny Device Is Causing Such A Massive Ripple Across The Country
By Shaniya Raheja, University Of California San Diego Class of 2022
September 27, 2019
Tumblr media
Every generation has had a whirlwind of trends that have changed the social dynamic and today that trend is none other than e-cigarettes. A vape or JUUL is a popular smoking device that has recently captivated the e-cigarette market by branding itself as a “safer alternative to smoking”, when in reality the FDA has confirmed that there is no proof linking JUUL to be a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes.
Other than the blatant lies that the JUUL industry has been feeding us, much of the public backlash comes from the industry’s large influence over younger generations, specifically pre-teens and young teens. With its sleek features and mouth-watering flavors, it is no wonder teenagers are instantly drawn in to the device. In fact, JUUL advertisements and marketing campaigns look to target teens by drawing them in with mouth-watering flavors ranging from cool cumber to crèmebrûlée. This leads us to the question of whether these marketing campaigns are intentional, creating the question of their legality. Under Federal Law, the marketing to minors is prohibited, however JUUL Labs claims that their product is in fact intended for adults who are trying to quit smoking rather than trying to hook pre-teens into smoking. However their colorful youthful advertisements send a different message to the mass public.
Under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act also known as RICO, the JUUL Company is subjected to the term “enterprise” therefore making it unlawful for them to misrepresent their product to a wide audience and market to a youthful demographic. The concern of marketing to children also treads on the toes of the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC Statutory Authority prohibits “any form of deceptive or unfair practices leading to the consumer’s detriment”. Therefore the JUUL industry is being sued not just on accounts of fraudulent claims to be “healthy” but also on their large teen demographic.
To add, JUUL Labs is also being sued on counts of negligence, failure to warn and design defect. As a mass corporation, it is the responsibility of JUUL to keep the mass public well aware of the dangers of their product and make sure such a product does not draw in a younger audience. Furthermore, JUUL contains nicotine as well as other aerosolized constituents, which they knew would cause grave harm on whoever ingested their product was even defective in nature by releasing much more nicotine than what was advertised on the packaging.
All across America, teenagers are fighting back the JUUL industry after mysteriously developing life-threatening diseases and breathing problems after being regular JUUL smokers. Most cases have many of the same claims mainly being that the teenagers felt deceived when they began vaping and not long after developed an addiction to nicotine. In a particular case involving the District Court of Kansas, plaintiff Issac Gant claims he began vaping as a high school senior after seeing their colorful ads all over the city and social media, and was not at all aware that JUULS even contained nicotine. Gant claimed that the false marketing tactics put forth by the JUUL industry caused his addiction, which has now led him to severe life long respiratory problems. Now millions of teenagers all across the United States bring forth similar accusations against JUUL Labs.
Tumblr media
Another example of such a case is in Florida, where JUUL labs violate individual state laws as well as general Federal law. The public is outraged not only by the fact that JUUL’s products is causing such massive harm to their children, but by the fact that the company was completely aware of the dangers of their products and was aware they were targeting an underage audience, yet chose to do nothing about it.
Tumblr media
However the outrage doesn’t just end there, studies by the Stanford School of Medicine found close similarities linking JUUL marketing strategies to old tobacco advertisements in message, theme and overall purpose. And just like these old advertisements, JUUL ads fail to mention warning messages especially since many of their ads feature a youthful demographic. Even after 2018 when JUUL was forced to advertise nicotine warnings on their packages, they still failed to mention additives and fraudulently concealed materials within their pods that could lead to additional side effects.
The case against JUUL labs keeps piling on and raises the question of whether or not JUUL truly did engage in illegal activities. In terms of a legal standpoint, the answer is yes. JUUL labs unlawfully marketed their products in a deceptive manner, and even used their framework of ads and social media platforms to target a young vulnerable demographic. Moreover, JUUL attempted to mimic the same unlawful strategies used by “Big Tobacco” companies, and even used their litigation strategies to learn how to target minors.
While JUUL is finally facing the consequences of their actions, it raises a question of why did it take us all these years and so many teens across the United States to develop life threatening diseases, in order for us to realize what they are doing is wrong?

Degrassi Next Class Season 4 Reaction Post
Hi guys. I know I’ve been absent, but I really needed to come out of “hiatus” to share my feelings about DNC Season 4. I’m coming up on 30 at the end of the month and this season moved me more than any fiction has in the past couple years. So perhaps it’s fitting to write a sort of farewell to characters who’ve been with me since my mid-twenties. I know we all have a tendency to sort of insert ourselves into fiction, but this...was something else. Cheesy? Maybe.
 Saad // Belgium storyline
===================
I mean honestly the fact that a show, especially a show for teens, is using the words: Syria, Istanbul, ISIS, refugee, at all is mind blowing to me. And unlike most television willing to broach the issue, DNC is actually humanizing its characters who have been touched by war. I feel like far too often, we’d rather just pretend everything is fine and half of an entire country’s population hasn’t been displaced. Half a million people haven’t been killed. I’ll be the first to admit I often do.
As some of you may know, I live in Istanbul and up until very recently, was working as a journalist. A majority of our energy was spent focusing on the Syrian refugee crisis and the country’s civil war. We live at the border of the war and yes, we take in more Syrian refugees than any other country in the world, but many are shoved into camps in the middle of nowhere or living in big cities, begging on the streets. There’s no infrastructure to handle them and most can’t move westward. Add to that the low-key security issues in the country (About 20 significant terror attacks in two years + an attempted coup. Hey-o!)
But even at our news station, when a terror attack hit Europe, versus somewhere in the Middle East, Africa, or even Turkey, we’d spend days dissecting it. But then, then, we’d run packages similar to Saad’s speech posing the question, Why doesn’t anyone care when it happens to brown people? Do people just expect brown people will be blown up? I agree with the sentiment, but when we, as the “brown” media perpetuate it? Internalised hate turned into greed.
We can’t normalise death, but I don’t think more Facebook flag filters are the answer, because there could never be enough to encompass the death and destruction occurring every day. The “Western” lack of interest in death in the Middle East does nothing but perpetuate the cycle of terror. I’ve seen Anti-Western sentiment grow after every terror attack in this country and I believe part of it can be attributed to the blase attitude shown by “Western” media toward “brown” death.
What does this have to do with Degrassi? I think they’ve done a pretty remarkable job tempering reality with what Canada [and the pre-Trump US] looks like on the surface. Canada is at an interesting crossroads in that it has one of the best policies for refugees in the world, but it’s far from perfect (not that anything can be). And there are Lolas and there are people like the asshat who ripped off Goldi’s hijab.  Teenagers People have never been kind so it’s no surprise that people were suspicious of Saad. It was disturbing and heartbreaking, but never surprising, to watch his story. Also not surprising: Goldi’s foray into respectability politics.
Being welcomed into a “free society” is more than being given a chance to live. Yes, newcomers are given the freedom to worship as they chose (or not). And I am in no way undervaluing that. It’s a fundamental human right. People need to be welcomed, folded into the fabric, not made to feel like they must be grateful, or always apologizing for people who don’t speak for them. Or you know, in the case of Goldi, reminding people that they’re Canadian by birth.
Goldi // Winston
===============
The Muslim voices on DNC are strong, clear, and super diverse- just like- wait for it- people in real life.
I especially love Goldi’s relationship with Winston and how she tries to reconcile her personal morals to her feelings, desires, and the world around her. I was pleased with the show for never judging her or making her decisions “wrong.” We could see how big her decision to hold Winston’s hand was and it wasn’t played for laughs. Likewise, he didn’t push her, was always respectful of the boundaries of their friendship/flirtation. Checking that the dessert was halal, that it was OK for them to be alone together, etc. Of course, he blundered: Maybe you should just take it off. That felt as realistic as the sweetness, as did the fact that he did physically fight the guy. Goldi’s guilt about the whole thing felt spot on. Her father’s reaction felt right for the moment and character DNC created.
Bisexual !!!11!!!
==============
*I’m totally down with people who don’t label themselves. This is about a general TV problem and more so, this specific character*
How is it that after 30 years on this planet...every time I hear a character on television say the words I am bisexual, I still feel like something has opened up inside and I can finally exhale?
I do have to laugh, though, having read that post going around about imagining the classroom diversity exercise through a third party’s perspective. On one hand, I completely agree. On another, the attitude is part of why Miles has struggled. He can’t- and should never- deny the amazing privilege he has in his life. But he is bisexual, dammit, and we are real, and we are discriminated against, and we deserve validation, and acknowledgment of the fact that it puts us at high risk, even if we’re rich, white, Canadian men. // rant over.
Miles’s rejection to the “diversity” spot was a great segue into a total acceptance of himself. Aside from one throwaway line to Maya in season 14, we’ve never seen any outward acknowledgement that he has any issues with his sexuality. But he’s never put a label on it, nor has he referenced acting on it, or being aware of it, before Tristan. He was instantly cool with Tristan being gay and didn’t seem to mind helping Zoë figure herself out. But sometimes when we label something, it becomes real. It feels like no take-backs.
Miles finally admitting that he did, in fact, struggle with his identity, and wasn’t just someone “not into labels,” made me want to cry. This acknowledgement rounds out his entire story arc in a way leaving him as someone who loves the person, not the gender wouldn’t. IMHO. It seems to confirm a lot of head canon. And it seems like something that had been planned, rather than just fanservice. But what do I know?
=============================
So. I’ll miss these characters.
That’s it. I think. <3
P.S.
Hijab moments: There are now just random extras in hijab (though why it took Syrian refugees for this to happen, idk). Also Goldi wrapping a loose scarf around her head to Facetime Winston.
Such a random and small thing, but there was a scene where Saad was chopping up cucumber and tomatoes and it was such an amazing touch. Small, but so, so, accurate. Kudos. Season was filled with them. Another was Rasha commenting about the horror of her ex not removing her shoes upon entering the house!
Connecting Lola’s parents fleeing Argentina to Saad fleeing Syria? Brava!
For all that Ms. Grell is up in everyone’s business and noticing that Yael is binding their breasts, you’d think she’d be checking in with Saad and the other refugees, though? I mean they’re all so worried about him being radicalized and a terrorist and yet aren’t doing mental health check-ins. Ridiculous.
Yay! A genderqueer/fluid character!
I don’t think Hunter has an obligation to stay with Yael. He likes girls. They’re not a girl. Hunter does, however, have an obligation not to be an asshole.

Recession, Girl Child And 2017 Budget
Taiwo Alimi reports that Nigeria may lose more teenage girls to unwanted pregnancies, as lip service is paid to healthcare by Nigeria government.
The figures are mind-boggling, yet they are true.
Tumblr media
“Every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-five year olds and
145 women of childbearing age. This makes the country the second largest contributor to the under–five and maternal mortality rate in the world.”
“Preventable or treatable infectious diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles and HIV/AIDS account for more than 70 per cent of the estimated one million under-five deaths in Nigeria.”
“Malnutrition is the cause of death of a large proportion of children under-5 in Nigeria, as it accounts for more than 50 per cent of deaths of children in this age bracket.”
“The deaths of newborn babies in Nigeria represent a quarter of the total number of deaths of children under-five. The majority of these occur within the first week of life, mainly due to complications during pregnancy and delivery.”
“Similarly, a woman’s chance of dying from pregnancy and childbirth in Nigeria is 1 in 13.”
“Although many of these deaths are preventable, the coverage and quality of health care services in Nigeria continue to fail women and children.
Presently, less than 20 per cent of health facilities offer emergency obstetric care and only 35 per cent of skilled birth attendants attend deliveries.”
The facts above were presented by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to explain better the pitiable healthcare of Nigerians.
UNICEF concludes that efforts by Nigeria government to cut down on, “infant and under-five mortality rates, still remains too slow to achieve the Millennium Development Goals of reducing child mortality by a third by 2015.”
Reality starring us in the face
Sadly, realities abound all around us. From the Northern rural to the Western urban of the country, the stark reality stares at us in the face.
In the course of verifying UNICEF claims, I met some teenagers who have left school to becoming child bride, some are carrying unwanted pregnancies, and some have gone through difficult deliveries.
I met Silifatu (not real name) at the reserved wing of University Teaching Hospital Ibadan (UCH), where she had joined a long list of underage girls suffering from fistula, a common disease among child mothers.
It occurs when the womb ruptures caused by prolonged childbirth leading to leakage of urine.
Growing up in Damaturu, Yobe State, under the care of peasant parents, she is accustomed to hard work and life.
The family owns three farms and all year round, there is a farm to be cultivated, harvested, or prepared for the rainy season.
“I was always with my mother,” she recalled, “and if we were not preparing food for the family of nine, we would be on the farm harvesting.”
Thin and disheveled, she looks older than her official 16 year-old.
She was married off at 15 to a man old enough to be his father and was put in family way almost immediately.
“Four of my friends also left school to get married at the same time I did,” she mourned.
What mother told me!
Silifatu got pregnant the second month she joined her husband’s harem and her health challenge began almost immediately.
“My mother did not tell me that sex or child bearing would be difficult. I observe basic hygiene but I did not know much about delivery,” she said.
“She told me it could be painful, but it would go away quickly. That I must be brave and I can cry if I want to.”
Silifatu suffered multiple tears leading to fistula after prolonged labour and her husband sent her to the health center when the traditional birth attendant methods did not mitigate her suffering.
“The midwives in my village took care of my delivery. It was painful and thereafter my husband noticed that I was suffering and took me to the local clinic, but they did not have the basic equipment to treat my case. Therefore, I was referred to Kebbi VVF center. From there I was sent to the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan where free surgery is available,” explained Silifatu, who has undergone two surgeries and now in rehabilitation.
Mariama was married off to 45-year-old local guard, Kabiru Mohammed, at 14 and had her baby a month short of her 15th birthday.
I had called their home at Mowe, Ogun State, under the guise of gifting the baby money.
Mariama was barely 12 when her parents accepted Mohammed’s proposal.
Two years later, she parked in to become a full house-wife.
 Religion, custom, and tradition
Mohammed does not see Mariama as a child. “My mother had me at the age of 13,” he announced.
“In my tradition and religion, as soon as a girl starts menstruating she is ready for marriage.”
That Mariama did not suffer a rupture or vestico vagina fistula (VVF) at delivery was a miracle to Dr Demola Adewusi, the lead doctor at Broadland Hospital Ogun state, who took delivery of her baby.
She also got help from their landlord and the private hospital.
“My Oga (master) tried for us. When my wife got pregnant, he took us to the hospital his family uses and handed her to the doctor. He used to give us money too so that she could go for antenatal all the time and so, when she was due, the baby came and her delivery was not complicated,” explained Mohammed.
Dr Adewusi called Mariama’s case a special one from the time, she was brought in by their landlord.
Teen pregnancy upsurge
While Mariama and Silifatu have been hounded to early marriage by a combination of tradition and hard time, the latter appears to be the root cause of teen pregnancy in urban cities and towns.
Mrs. Florence Sunday, an administrator in a private school, said more parents are withdrawing female children from schools since the country officially went into recession.
Girl child discrimination
Her words: “In my school, we have lost three girls from JJS 1 and JJS 2. They did not return for the second term in January. Their parents said they could not cope with the high fees because they lost their jobs and business was bad.
“I see those children going wayward and getting pregnant in sooner than later.
Stella falls into this group mentioned by Mrs. Sunday.
Her father took to okada (motorcyclist) riding after losing his white-collar job last year. Her mother – a petty trader- also closed down her shop due to low funding.
“I had to stop schooling because my parents said I should allow them concentrate on my two brothers, who are also in school,” Stella complained in a vacant tone.
It is not uncommon in many parts of the country for poor and often uneducated parents to withdraw their female children from school during lean periods, while male children continue.
The decision, though unpopular with Stella, became her undoing as she sought compassion outside her home and today, at 16, is in the family way by a 25-year- old artisan.
Biola, 17, is five months pregnant. She attends antenatal on Thursdays at Oke Afa Health Center Ogun State. She was a student of a private secondary school at Oke Afa until she dropped out a year ago to join her mother at her restaurant at Magboro market.
“My father said he had lost many customers in his welding business. He said he was not getting new jobs and so we had to manage,” she recalled.
Biola was managing the food joint whenever her mum was away.
“That is how I met my husband. He owns a danfo (commercial bus), and promised to take care of me. I’m pregnant for him and we are making plans for marriage, but he wants me to have the baby first.”
Biola and company would have feared better given a better healthcare system, but they live to report their health struggle. Thousands of young girls in Nigeria are six feet under the ground.
Fatal statistics
“Statistic derived from World Health Organisation, (WHO) states that about 16 million girls between 15 and 19 years of age and two million girls under the age of 15 give birth annually and Nigeria alone account for 10 percent of global maternal mortality.”
It means that Nigeria will lose more than 50,000 teenagers during childbirth this year unless our healthcare system changes for better.
Medical challenges
Dr Opeyemi Akinajo, a consultant and specialist in maternal medicine has surplus concern for the girl child, a passion that makes her voice reverberate and quake when she talks about it. Due to the delicate nature of a girl child and the complexity of child bearing, she said, teenage pregnancy is a risky and costly business.
“There is a time that the body of a woman is matured enough and the organs are ready to go through the stress of pregnancy and delivery, but a child or teenage girl is still developing these organs. They are still under formation. They are exposed to laceration of the vagina even during sexual intercourse.”
Dr Akinajo recollected the case of a girl child that suffered severe tears during sex. “She was brought in bleeding profusely and too late. The girl bled to death.”
Emotional trauma
There is also emotional trauma, physical trauma and abuse. “A child cannot think well.” During pregnancy, she added, “such a girl would not even know when to go for antenatal or where to go to and cannot talk to her husband about it, so, throughout she may not go to hospital. Due to poor feeding, nutritional disorder arises, leading to anaemia; shortage of blood. This problem would affect the baby too because, the baby depends on her for blood too and so would be affected since mother has blood shortage. Also, pelvic region is not developed and so she has problem during labour.”
The risk of  death is also high in teen pregnancy, Dr Adewusi stressed. “A pregnant teen  is prone to pre-eclampsia; high blood pressure, sometimes with fluid  retention. This condition can lead to eclampsia; seizure or convulsion, and  can lead to coma and death.”
“It is one of the top five causes of maternal death.”
Even after delivery, she is not out of danger.
Dr Akinajo’s tone rose in fervent distress as she delivered this part: “Fistula occurs, she smells, and has rashes on the thighs and vagina, infections and deprivation and isolation, stigmatisation can lead to death.”
Access to Healthcare
Because teenage pregnancy in Nigeria is associated with poor and illiterates in rural and urban homes, accessing Nigeria’s costly and unorganized heath care system is a bigger problem.
On the average, a fee of N150, 000 is charged for surgery in a government hospital while it is higher in private hospitals.
“How do you expect these people to get access to adequate health care? Dr Adewusi asked rhetorically.” Realistically the families of Mariama, Silifatu, Stella, and Biola cannot afford the humongous fee.
What is the way out of this logjam? “Put your money where your mouth is.” Dr Adewusi advises that it has come to a tragic point where “Government should take healthcare more seriously, and devote its resources to it.”
He wondered why the 2017 health budget is 4.17 per cent of the annual budget.
Quoting figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr Adewusi noted that the United States of America (U.S.A), a developed country with far lower maternal fatality rate, spends $9bn dollars (N4.5tn) annually to fight teen pregnancy. “If the U.S government can spend $9 billion dollars to attend to teen pregnancy every year, we should ask Nigerian government how much it is spending on this scourge taking away our girls every day,” he queried,
It is more than the entire 2017 health budget of Nigeria.
Tragic allocation to healthcare
The 2017 allocation is N304bn, which is 4.17 per cent of the annual budget of N7.298tn. It is also in continuance of healthcare neglect in Nigeria.
From 2015 to 2017, the health sector budget was N259bn, N250bn, and N304bn respectively. However, due to inflation, the figures: $1.4m, $1.3m, and $0.997m, meaning that Nigeria spends less as the year goes back.
Meanwhile, at the Abuja Declaration of 2001, stakeholders recommended a minimum of 15 percent of the total annual budget to be dedicated to health and some African countries have followed suit.
In 2016, Rwanda allocated 18 per cent of its total budget to healthcare. Botswana budgeted 17.8 per cent to health; Malawi, 17.1 per cent, Zambia, 16.4 per cent and Burkina Faso, 15.8 per cent.
This is in consonance with what operates in developed countries. For example, United States allocated 20.7 per cent of its annual budget for health, Germany 19.4 per cent, and China 12.6 per cent.
Yet, Nigeria government has refused to comply.
A closer look at Nigeria’s allocation shows that 60 per cent of the money will go to paying health personnel, whereas the public health issues such as preventive and promotive healthcare among the vulnerable like children and women are given just a little fraction of the entire amount.
Buttressing, Africa health, Human & Social Development Information Service (AFri-Dev) reveals a close linkage between development, girl child education, and healthcare.
It records that eight states in Nigeria have the worst record of female illiteracy and healthcare: Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Katsina and Gombe, little wonder they are among the least developed states in Nigeria. Health, they say, is wealth.
Primary health centre
If the 15 per cent of annual budget allocation to health is, implemented Dr Akinajo explained that Nigeria stands to gain a lot. “Prevention is better than cure. Hundreds of health centres will be activated across the country. They are closer to the people and easily accessible. Then, the health-workers can be trained to recognise child pregnancy problems and quickly refer sufferers to hospitals nearby. It means we will have less sufferers of VVF.”
Qualified Medical Personnel
Then, the incessant issue over qualified medical personnel, spokesperson of National Association of Resident Doctors, (NARD) Ugoeze Asinobi said, would be outdated.
“We need to be trained and retrained. Doctors are leaving the country in droves because they believed that things are not working here. It is like a doctor to 500 patients in Nigeria. If the right thing is done, doctors would return to hospitals and we would have a healthier and more virile nation. Then, we can begin to talk about development. No nation can develop without its people,” added Dr. Asinobi.

The SF (Quarantine) TV & Takeout Guide added to Google Docs
The SF (Quarantine) TV & Takeout Guide
We’ve all been watching a lot of TV lately (thanks to our ex who still hasn’t changed their Hulu password). But if you’re over combing through Netflix’s “Critically-Acclaimed Witty Sitcoms” category every night, only to end up half-watching The Office and half-scrolling through Twitter, it might be time to switch things up. Let us help you. Here are 10 great TV shows you can stream right now, and what to eat while you watch.
All restaurants featured on The Infatuation are selected by our editorial team. The SF (Quarantine) TV And Takeout Guide is presented by Uber Eats. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, supporting our local restaurant community has never been more important. Uber Eats customers can now give directly to the restaurants they love at checkout. 100% will go to the restaurant. Order now to support. See app for details.
Featured In The Ultimate San Francisco Delivery & Takeout Guide See all our guides THE SPOTS Yung Kee Restaurant $$$$ 888 Webster St
TV Pairing: Pen15 (Hulu)
“Pen15 is a reminder that kids who came of age in the late ’90s were too obsessed with making friends on AOL Instant Messenger and choosing AIM screen names (mine was surfsup7up). Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle play 13-year-old versions of themselves and deal with crushes, nosy siblings, and newfound urges to sit on a washing machine. This cringe comedy makes you constantly reminiscence about your early teen years - both the awkward and the great. For me, one of those great growing-up memories were the frequent family dinners at Yung Kee, a Chinese restaurant in Oakland Chinatown. We always got the large bowls of wonton soup (I still get it to this day). It comes with egg noodles and chives, and you should absolutely get it with the barbecued pork.” -LC
 Beit Rima $ $ $ $ Middle Eastern  in  Castro ,  Mission $$$$ 138 Church St 8.2 /10
TV Pairing: Veep (Hulu)
“I once had a dream where Julia Louis-Dreyfus came to me, laid a hand on my cheek, and told me I was ‘cute and small.’ Best night of my life. But this isn’t about me. It’s about Veep, a brilliant comedy that follows hot mess Vice President Selina Meyer (played by the hilarious, absolutely perfect JLD) and her misguided efforts to become president. It’s also almost unfair how great the cast is - if we harnessed their collective comedic abilities it could probably power a 10-car BART train. So what to order while you watch this satirical masterpiece? Definitely Beit Rima’s mezze platter with delicious labneh and muhammara, and hand-kneaded pita covered in za’atar - you’re going to need something that won’t get cold while you inevitably watch the entire first season in one sitting. If you need further convincing, watch this.” -JC
 Golden Boy Pizza $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  North Beach $$$$ 542 Green St 7.5 /10
TV Pairing: Monk (Prime)
“I have an inherent fondness for TV shows that are set in the Bay Area (Silicon Valley, The OA, Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper) mainly because there aren’t many of them, and I get a kick out of seeing my hometown on-screen. I recently started rewatching Monk, the police procedural with Tony Shalhoub. It takes place in San Francisco. And in the memorable opening sequence, Tony walks across a North Beach street at night. The scene gives me cravings for my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood - Golden Boy Pizza. Their Sicilian-style slices are the best in the city - they have a fluffy crust and a lightly crispy bottom, and are topped with a thick layer of cheese. You’ll think all other pizzas are inferior after ordering takeout from here.” -LC
Order delivery  Boichik Bagels $$$$ 3170 College Ave
TV Pairing: Survivor (CBS)
“I know what you’re thinking. Survivor is still on? Yes, the reality competition series just finished its 40th season, and it’s one of the best shows on TV. Nothing is more fascinating than watching strangers battle for $1 million through a glorious clusterf*ck of social, strategic, and physical gameplay - you’ve got iconic blindsides, 11-hour immunity challenges, and Jeff Probst in khakis yelling “Come on in, guys!” every episode, without fail. There’s no way to be a casual fan of Survivor - you either have no idea it exists, or watching it religiously is your most prominent personality trait. Boichik Bagels has a similar cult following (which I’m also a part of). In pre-quarantine times, people lined up on College Ave. at 7am to snag a dozen of their New York-style bagels, which usually sold out within hours. Now, you can pre-order online for pick-up. And since Survivor’s new season just wrapped, you can start your thorough rewatch of seasons 16, 20, or 28 (the best ones) over an everything bagel, lox, and scallion schmear.” -JC
 Top Dog $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food  in  Berkeley $$$$ 2534 Durant Ave 8.0 /10
TV Pairing: The League (Hulu)
“I love a challenge and friendly competition - especially when it’s over something as time-consuming and stupid as Fantasy Football. Full disclosure: I’ve made the playoffs in my league for the last three years, and take great pride in this fact. My life as a casual Fantasy Football player is also why I find this comedy series about adult friends who’ll lie, cheat, and sacrifice the well-being of their children to win wildly entertaining. One running joke involves Jason Mantzoukas randomly pulling hot dogs out of his pocket (don’t ask). So, naturally, I’ll pair this with the excellent hot link or the kielbasa from Top Dog. The stand near the Cal campus serves it on a warm sesame-seed bun and tops it with sauerkraut and mustard.” -LC
Order delivery  Dumpling Specialist $$$$ 1123 Taraval St
TV Pairing: Kim’s Convenience (Netflix)
“Kim’s Convenience is a fantastic sitcom about a Korean-Canadian family that runs - yep, you guessed it - a convenience store. It’s a refreshing and much-needed depiction of first-generation Asian families, done justice by a hilarious cast of lovable, complex characters. And like my family (a plate of cut fruit, anyone?), one of Mrs. Kim’s love languages is food: she often shows up in her kids’ apartments to stock their fridges with containers full of leftover kimbap. For me, love is a plate of hand-folded steamed pork dumplings, which I’d order from Dumpling Specialist, along with their delicate, juicy xiao long bao and wontons doused in spicy chili oil.” -JC
 Nari $ $ $ $ Thai  in  Japantown $$$$ 1625 Post St 9.1 /10
TV Pairing: Casa De Las Flores (Netflix)
“Without spoiling anything (OK, fine, there’s a flashy dance sequence involving Thalia’s “A Quien Le Importa”), Casa De Las Flores is a Mexican soap opera about a family who owns a flower shop. It’s fantastic, refreshing, and you will stream all three seasons in one weekend. At its core, it’s really a dark comedy about a family that’s complicated (in the very best way). If you like your meals to be complex, order from Nari. Their Thai dishes are like fireworks in your mouth - they’re sweet, salty, and so spicy you’ll need a firehose to put out the burn. Nari is offering dinner sets for two to-go. Their menu changes frequently, but the meals usually include curry, soup, jasmine rice, and dessert.” -LC
 Farmhouse Kitchen $ $ $ $ Thai  in  Mission $$$$ 710 Florida St 8.4 /10
TV Pairing: Elite (Netflix)
“If you took Gossip Girl, set it in a small mountain town in Spain, and threw in way more sex and murder, you’d get Elite. The teen drama is chaotic and thrilling. And watching ridiculously attractive teenagers cover up crimes in between lavish mansion parties and super complicated relationships (yes, there’s a thrupple) makes me want to eat something equally as exhilarating: the Little Lao set from Farmhouse Kitchen. It’s a massive platter that comes with an overwhelming amount of dishes - there’s the hat yai fried chicken, spicy papaya salad, panang neua short rib, and lots more. Choosing which delicious bite to take next is like trying to keep track of the back-and-forth drama and figuring out who actually killed who - a near-impossible task.” -JC
Order delivery  Acme Bar $$$$ 2115 San Pablo Ave
TV Pairing: Lucifer (Netflix)
“Let’s get this out of the way: Lucifer is absurd and makes no sense, and yet it’s somehow one of my favorite shows. It’s a supernatural dramedy and a police procedural about the devil (dressed as a dapper British man named Lucifer Morningstar) who leaves hell, moves to Los Angeles, and helps the LAPD solve crimes. Oh, and he owns a nightclub and drinks lots of dark liquor. (This is the only part that makes sense). In honor of Lucifer’s beverage of choice, order from Acme Bar & Company. It’s a fantastic bar in Berkeley with an extensive whiskey selection, and right now you can get Old-Fashioneds, and bottles of bourbon, scotch, rum, and brandy for takeout and delivery. Trust me, you’ll need a drink to get through all the bad devil puns.” -LC
Celia Catalino Belcampo Meat Co. $$$$ 60 Morris Street, Suite 27
TV Pairing: Gilmore Girls (Netflix)
“There’s never been a better time to revisit one of the most wholesome on-screen mother-daughter relationships ever. Lorelai and Rory see each other through graduations, almost-weddings, and heartbreak - and since Lorelai can’t cook to save her life, they usually end up ordering three years’ worth of Chinese takeout for dinner, or grabbing a burger at Luke’s Diner. So when you watch, it’s only logical to brew yourself a pot of coffee and order a huge Belcampo Burger, which comes stuffed with caramelized onions, aioli, and white cheddar, and a side of fries - perfect to eat while sitting on the couch and debating the pros and cons of Team Dean vs. Team Jess.” -JC

Must-Reads Of The Week From Brianna Labuskes
The Friday Breeze
Newsletter editor Brianna Labuskes, who reads everything on health care to compile our daily Morning Briefing, offers the best and most provocative stories for the weekend.
Happy Friday! In news that is technically really good and exciting but is also kind of icky: yarn made from human skin could eventually be used to stitch up surgical wounds as a way to cut down on detrimental reactions from patients. As CNN reports, “The researchers say their ‘human textile,’ which they developed from skin cells, can be used for knitting, sewing and even crochet.” My face has been stuck in the scream emoji since I read this story, so please join me. (Also for those who think neat!, make sure to check out Philadelphia’s Mutter Museum, which has a journal bound with human skin and is actually very cool.)
Now on to what you may have missed this week.
It’s that time of year! President Donald Trump gave his State of the Union address to Congress, where he declared the nation’s future to be “blazing bright.” During his speech he promised to “never let socialism destroy American health care,” encouraged Congress to send him a bill on drug pricing (to which Democrats began chanting the name of the legislation the House has already passed), and touted his administration’s push for price transparency in health care.
He also said that Democrats were trying to provide health coverage for immigrants who are in the country illegally; called for a ban on abortions that are late in term; promised to always protect Medicare; said more than 7 million people have been shifted off food stamps during his term; and took credit for a drop in health insurance premiums. Various outlets fact checked these statements — which range from completely false to misleading to true — so I’ll link to a collection of them.

And now for the coronavirus roundup, where I sifted through hundreds of stories so you don’t have to. Before we dive in, just a reminder that there are still only 12 confirmed cases in the U.S.
— As coronavirus cases in China skyrocket past 30,000 (with 636 deaths), Chinese officials are now performing house-to-house searches in Wuhan, collecting the sick and warehousing them in quarantine centers. In the city, there’s a growing sense that the residents are being sacrificed for the good of the rest of the country. “There must be no deserters, or they will be nailed to the pillar of historical shame forever,” said Vice Premier Sun Chunlan.
The New York Times: China Tightens Wuhan Lockdown In ‘Wartime’ Battle With Coronavirus
— The death of one of the first Chinese doctors to warn about a coronavirus outbreak sent waves of grief and anger through a nation that’s growing more and more frustrated with how its government is handling the outbreak.
The New York Times: A Rare Online Revolt Emerges In China Over Death Of Coronavirus Whistle-Blower
— After a week of cases jumping by double-digit percentages, health officials still say it’s too early to declare that the virus has peaked.
The Wall Street Journal: World Health Authorities Warn Virus Hasn’t Peaked After China’s Deadliest Day
— Hundreds more Americans were evacuated from China and will be quarantined by the U.S. government. But the outrageous fact I learned this week is that those people (and their insurers) are on the hook for any medical costs that arise from being quarantined. For those who are deemed unable to afford health insurance, the government will pick up the tab but it might outsource some of those costs to programs like Medicaid when possible. The evacuees also have to pay for their flight out of China and the cost to get to their final destination when the quarantine is over.
CNN: What It Means To Be Under The Coronavirus Federal Quarantine In The US
— In what seems a bit like the start of a dystopian reality TV show, thousands of cruise passengers are being quarantined on two ships off the coast of Japan and Hong Kong. A third cruise has been turned away from multiple ports.
The Washington Post: Trapped On Coronavirus-Ravaged Cruise Ship, Diamond Princess Passengers Struggle To Keep Spirits Up
— This story is an interesting look at how the first case in the U.S. was discovered, and more broadly showcases local public health officials who are often the ones on the front lines of a new outbreak.
The New York Times: Inside The Race To Contain America’s First Coronavirus Case
— The majority of human diseases, including the coronavirus, are zoonotic, or passed from animals to humans. If you want a brief summary of some notable ones throughout history, check out this piece from WSJ that includes a shout-out to a 5,300 mummified man who, before he died from an arrow, suffered from Lyme disease.
The Wall Street Journal: Plagues From The Animal Kingdom
— Not to be all doom and gloom, it seems to be humans’ lot in life to constantly be at war with pathogens. That means even if we contain the coronavirus, there’s just another deadly pathogen waiting in the wings.
Bloomberg: Man Vs. Microbe: We’re Not Ready For The Next Global Virus Outbreak
Meanwhile, this year’s strain of the flu is hitting children particularly hard. More than half of the positive flu tests from public health labs this season have been in children and adults under the age of 25.
The Wall Street Journal: The Flu Is Hitting Children Especially Hard This Season
It might be hard to focus on anything but the results snafu at the Iowa caucuses, but advocates for disabled voters are also reporting back on how the efforts to expand access played out. The Iowa Democratic Party took strides this year to better help disabled voters participate, and for some the experience was positive. Others, however, said that reality looked a lot different than what the party’s messaging promised.

In theory, employers pay their workers less because part of their benefits package includes health insurance. But if the country moved toward a “Medicare for All” model, would workers see their wages increase dollar-by-dollar of what was being spent on coverage? Not necessarily.
The New York Times: Would Your Wages Rise Under ‘Medicare For All’?
Although the Trump administration’s roll-out of the “Healthy Adult Opportunity” program that would encourage states to shift toward a block-grant style of funding drew lots of attention, a little-noticed change that could lead to big cuts flew somewhat under the radar. Governors of both parties, however, are sounding the alarm that an arcane fiscal accountability rule could lead to cuts up to $49 billion a year.
The Associated Press: Trump Rule Could Lead To Big Medicaid Cuts, Governors Warn
As is often the case with bans, teenagers are already finding a way around the e-cigarette flavor restrictions that went into effect this week. The FDA only regulated reusable vaping products, but disposable pods (with flavors like pink lemonade) are widely available at gas stations and the like.
The Associated Press: FDA Crackdown On Vaping Flavors Has Blind Spot: Disposables
VA Secretary Robert Wilkie abruptly fired his undersecretary, James Byrne, this week in what he called a “simple business decision.” Wilkie was forced to defend the decision because Byrne was well-liked by the veterans community, and the loss was just the latest in a long string of turnovers at the top of the troubled agency. Some also questioned if the dismissal had anything to do with the investigation of sexual assault allegations by Navy veteran Andrea Goldstein.
The New York Times: Deputy Secretary Of Veterans Affairs Is Abruptly Dismissed
And in the miscellaneous file for the week:
— Following the recent deaths of 15 inmates, the Justice Department has opened a civil rights investigation into the Mississippi prison system, which seems to be in the grips of a violent crisis.
The New York Times: Justice Dept. Opens Civil Rights Investigation Into Mississippi Prisons
— Anonymous reporting systems that have been set up to help prevent school shootings have actually been helping combat the epidemic of suicides in teens. Schools and local officials are pouring billions of dollars into preventing the next mass attack, and yet self-harm and suicidal ideation are what students are reporting far more often than any kind of suspicious activity. Public health officials say this should be a wake-up call about the real threat to young people.
NBC News: School Tip Lines Were Meant To Stop Shootings, But Uncovered A Teen Suicide Crisis
— How do you raise kids to prepare them for the projected negative effects of climate change without causing more trauma, anxiety and depression in a generation that’s already struggling to cope with such mental health issues? It’s a fine line to walk, experts say.
The Washington Post: Eco-Anxiety Is Overwhelming Kids. Where’s The Line Between Education And Alarmism?
