The actor Peter Blake was born on December 8th 1948 in Selkirk.
Tumblr media
Unless you are a fan of the John Sullivan comedy, Dear John, you might not have heard of Peter Blake. Peter described himself as “the man who was nearly famous three times”, those occasions being for the sitcoms Dear John and Agony and a series of TV advertisements for Pepsi in the mid-1970s.
Born as John Beattie Dempsey his parents must have been proud Scots, they always referred to him as Ian. For those that are unaware Ian is the Scottish Gaelic term for John in return he termed them “a Border Maiden” and “a Scottish Soldier”.
Although the family moved south to Worcestershire when he was young, they returned home often on visits, most often during the Selkirk Common Riding in June.
After failing to make it as pop star Blake trained at what is now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow, he made his debut in Frank Dunlop’s production of The Winter’s Tale at the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, in 1966). Three years later saw him as a “Stage Manager – not a part!” in strip clubs in Soho, before an Amsterdam production of Hair led to its West End version at the Shaftesbury. Pharaoh in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, followed, he was however most well known on stage for playing Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show over a thousand times between 1975 and 1994.
Tumblr media
While his bread and butter was on the stage Peter made appearances in some well known shows through the years including, in the 70's Minder, Shoestring and Z Cars, he was also in all episodes of the Sitcom Agony as smarmy radio disc jockey Andy Evol. During the 80's he was in Murphy's Mob, Shine on Harvey Moon and Just Good Friends, it was also in the 80's he appeared in one of my fave sitcoms, Dear John as the resplendent Kirk St Moritz, dressed in white suit, big collars and golden medallion.
During the 90's he was in four episodes of the Scottish sitcom City Lights with the late great Gerard Kelly, as well as several episodes of Smith and Jones, in the new millenium, like every other self respected Scottish actor, he was in Taggart as well as the Bill and four episodes of Eastenders. Peter also appeared and sang in an advert for Pepsi Cola.
Peter Blake passed away on July 21st 2018 aged 69.

ECCENTRIVIA: Man killed by own cock, penile routing and Mother's Day
ECCENTRIVIA: Man killed by own cock, penile routing and Mother’s Day
In my last blog, I mentioned that a 9-year-old of my acquaintance in London had adopted a kākāpō called Ralph in New Zealand. These are quirky, large, flightless, nocturnal parrots, not all called Ralph. They have a reported lifespan of up to 100 years. Over that period, they learn a trick or too. My blog mention got this comment from a reader: “I was in New Zealand a few years ago and took a…

Why does it always rain on me? Is it because I lied when I was seventeen? Why does it always rain on me? Even when the sun is shinning I can't avoid the lightning Oh, where did the blue sky go? Oh why is it raining so? It's so cold
When this album came out I was, in fact, seventeen. I can’t remember if I had lied or not, but probably because it kept raining on me. The year was 1999 and even though I wouldn’t discover the band as such until a year later, this album changed my life.
The following decade was the hardest time of my life. Battling major depression, on top another handful of mental disorders that went undiagnosed until many years later, truly made those years hell. Struggling between finding the will to stay alive and trying to find joy in life if I was to continue. I dropped out of school and my social life as I knew it slowly died. Apart from my sweet kitty cat, I had nothing to really live for other than spending my days online and chain smoking. This was long before the days of social media.
Back then they still showed nothing but music videos on MTV (does MTV still exist anyway?) and one day Why Does It Always Rain On Me? came on. I wish I could describe what I felt the first time I heard it and witnessed the beauty of the music video. That song and all of Travis’ music I would slowly discover afterwards changed my life. It made me feel less alone, like I had some constant company with me in Travis’ beautifully haunting melodies and lyrics every time I would listen to them.
Today, The Man Who turns 21. Travis has been in my life for 20 out of those 21 years, and to this day they remain my favorite band who I’ve had the luck to watch live twice and meet in person once (briefly). It’s both unnerving yet comforting that even though a lot of people can recognize some of their songs, unless you’re in the UK most people doesn’t know who they are. Everyone fucking should, but at the same time, I love that they are my little secret, to an extent.
I’m now much older, a tiny bit wiser and in a much better place, but Travis are still a constant in my life. Forever a reminder of things I have been through and also of the way things have gotten better, and I will always love them for giving me the gift of their beautiful music. Something I can listen to during both highs and lows that I still go through.
Happy 21st birthday to this incredibly beautiful album that got me through the toughest years of my life, and continues to make my day, as well as all of Travis’ music ever since. The Girl Who loves you forever.  🎈

Which set of musicians exemplify the period from the late nineties to the noughts the most? Opinions may vary regarding this, though my vote goes to Travis, because The Man Who became a founding docment for a variety of rocke in the era of the noughts. They continue to function as a working unit, yet their latest records don't wallow in an empty nostalgia. For instance, you can tell from their current, Everything At Once, that they do follow up the modern directions of the idiom. However, I fear they suffer the fate of Keane, i.e. no one's willing to check them, they are taken for granted despite the underappreciated greatness of their later pieces. I mean, the tune in the link, which closes the LP, provides us with them at one of their most uplifting.
