save me mid-century pulp romance illustrations...save me... I liked the pose on Walter Skor's illustration for The Dear Friends and i thought that a composition with "friends" right there was fitting for buddie

An observation: despite there being an implied sizable time gap between the Empty Child/the Doctor Dances and Boom Town (and then Bad Wolf/Parting of The Ways immediately following), Jack does not know about the Doctor's background with the Time War until it comes up in Parting of The Ways:
ROSE: You said they were extinct. How comes they're still alive? JACK: One minute they're the greatest threat in the Universe, the next minute they vanished out of time and space. DOCTOR: They went off to fight a bigger war. The Time War. JACK: I thought that was just a legend. DOCTOR: I was there. The war between the Daleks and the Time Lords, with the whole of creation at stake. My people were destroyed, but they took the Daleks with them. I almost thought it was worth it. Now it turns out they died for nothing.
So if I don’t discard this as just being for the purpose of providing exposition/refresher for the audience (which if it was there are ways to do that while also establishing that Jack already knows this information), I gotta chew on this for a bit in terms of what it means for my understanding of their dynamic
Because obviously the Time War is a major part of Nine’s backstory and character, and for Rose it was like, day two knowledge. So, even though I recognize that it’s something that the doctor doesn’t like to talk about much, it’s a bit surprising to me that it hasn’t come up at all before this point
(My assumption is that there’s a gap of a few weeks or months before Boom Town (let’s say 4 or 5 months on the outside) due to how much more comfortable and familiar the three of them seem with each other, particularly Nine and Jack. I suppose it’s possible - though I don’t want this to be the case, I want them to have as much time with each other as possible- that less time has passed than I thought, and I’m starting to lean toward that being the case)
And the thing is, it's usually pretty typical for companions to start asking who the Doctor is, where he's from pretty soon after they join, and asking those kind of questions quickly leads to the Time War. And I *think* Nine would probably answer if asked, so this leads me to believe that Jack didn't ask a lot of questions (and also, less surprisingly, that the Doctor didn't offer any information on his own).
And I have some thoughts and headcanons why, but more to the point, it kinda highlights for me that Jack’s time on the Tardis as this brief, whirlwind period for him. Where it’s very impactful and meaningful for him (made him want to be a hero and believe in good again, etc), but he doesn’t actually know the Doctor all that well (even by Doctor standards) just due to not being with him for all that long.

I thought it might be fun to do a little behind the scenes for the last story post! You guys might be surprised how little actual editing was involved. I mainly just crop, add brightness and saturation, clean up any small bits of clipping or weirdness that bother me, and then add captions! Do you want to know what actually took me the longest?

This hair had some problem areas that showed up in live mode but not CAS. It's such a tiny thing, but it annoyed me, so I had to touch it up in nearly every screenshot. Luckily, the darkness of her hair means I didn't have to do a perfect job.

The effects were all done in-game. Lilith has the alluring visage vampire perk, which creates the red haze and mind control spiral. Unfortunately, Helena crossed her path too closely, and rather than set the shot up again I used the clone brush in Photoshop to edit out the effects around her head (vampires who can successfully do mind control on other vampires are exceedingly rare). By the way, I later figured out a quick and dirty method for dispelling unwanted visual effects on a Sim is to remove buffs in MCCC.

As I've mentioned, I had to shoot the attack scene twice. The first attempt was too dark, the location wasn't very visually interesting, I was in an area of San My where I had less camera control, and I used the Effects Player, which ended up being less eye-catching (hey, sometimes vanilla is the best option!). They would have worked to get the point across, but I think you can really see how I learned and improved upon my vision!
These comparison shots are all uncropped and unedited, by the way. Reshade/Relight truly does the heavy lifting. I've also gotten better at finding an angle I like and sticking with it, even if that's only because I don't want to adjust Relight all over again, lol! Speaking of angles, that last shot was done using the Dutch angle trick I learned in this tutorial by @surely-sims! First-person camera is actually super useful for storytelling. If you don't already know about this head-turning trick, it'll change your life. It comes in clutch for changing the eye line of a posed Sim since I'm not always great at getting that right in Blender.
Anyway, I don't know if anyone will find this super helpful or interesting, but I'm always open to questions about taking and editing screenshots, even though I feel like most of what I know has just been absorbed through osmosis and trial and error!

rewatched last night of the proms today mainly because of that gifset of brian lol and i do honestly think it's one of the most interesting in9 from a political standpoint and it's not rly surprising to me that it's one of the most divisive... (also probs because it's a very british(tm) episode so i think perhaps some stuff doesn't translate as well internationally???)
coming off the back of brexit and just how much it divided families (hell, it divided MY family for yrs when my mum told us she voted to leave...) & i think it was a stroke of genius to make it set in the west country because, chagrin as i am to admit it, it really fucking stinks of conservatism around here smhsmh (except bristol lol... bristol is practical a lefty paradise in comparison to the rest of the sw pfft... i digress tho...)
it's interesting to me that yusuf is purely symbolic, not really a character so much as a plot device, and that's kinda the point right? the way that the different sides of the political spectrum talk about immigrants isn't in terms of them being actual people... people(politicians) talk about them as numbers on boats, as low paid workers, as 'strangers'...
i think it also plays into sexualisation and dehumanisation of non-white people, even penny (who is arguably the only person who treats him like a person, especially at the end) violates him and lies to protect her own skin...
and brian... oh brian... suchhh a fascinating character! his liberal minded hypocrisy, his anger and repression, his fear, his defeatism at the end... (also smth i never noticed before was where he pushes penny when he's drunk... the first hints of violence in him that explodes when he lands the final blow on yusuf)
& as much as oliver being on his phone did feel very 'kids these days always on they mobile telephones watching they ticked tocks', i think it perhaps was playing with the idea that a lot of young people feel disenfranchised by the political system, feeling like whatever they do never makes a difference...
there's also a part that i really liked when dawn is looking around at all the chintzy decor and family photographs with pride, music swelling... the peak of this lower middle class family's mundane achievements lol... this + the later moment when she yells at brian that she doesn't care about the dna results since she's adamant that knows she's english, that she belongs there...
idkkk my brain isn't working rn but i rly think there's a lot of interesting (sorry i've said interesting so much it's the only adjective i have in me at the mo soz lol) stuff going on here and i think perhaps a portion of the regular in9 viewership maybe just... didn't get it for whatever reason lol!?!?

rewatching 911 s3 and the buddie argument parallels with the figure skating couple fighting in 3x08 Malfunction is sooooo i'm sure the fandom was sick over that. "exhausting" and "we used to be partners" and arguing about leaving and the rest of the cast having such a read on how the couple's messy feelings manifest.

Unpopular opinion by a lot, but Naruto's feelings for Hinata always felt more brotherly to me than his feelings for Sakura.
I like them together, I think the pairing could have worked beautifully, I think the development was there from the beginning... However, I don't think the story made it work for Naruto per se.
Hinata is someone who from the beginning saw beyond Naruto's reputation. She admired him as a hardworking person, she found him attractive as a boy when no one else did, all that. Naruto in turn finds her creepy at first, but he respects her and admires her immediately when he sees her fight for the first time.
They see each other for who they are and that's so cool! That's a great love trope!
The problem is that they didn't make Naruto go beyond that initial respect for a fellow ninja. To the end of Shippuden, they don't convince you that Hinata is special to Naruto's eyes. Naruto cares about her, comforts her when she needs it and reacts to her suffering, right? But it doesn't feel like he does that because he cares about her in particular. His first promise to her turned out to be about the entire Hyuga clan, not something he did solely for her. When Pain almost kills her and she confesses, the context of the invasion to his homeland and a comrade sacrificing herself for him engulfed the meaning of the moment. Then at war Neji dies in front of her and once more, it's not just about her but about the whole war.
Hinata goes out of her way to support Naruto. She does things for him that she doesn't do for other people and she reacts to him in ways that she doesn't react to others. It's clear that what she feels is romantic and sexual attraction. No one has to try and convince you of that.
Naruto just doesn't notice her like that.
It's even worse when the manga insists on putting Naruto's reactions to Sasuke and Sakura almost next to any Hinata moment with him. They would show you an instance of Hinata trying to reach him, just to immediately put on display how much Naruto feels for his team and how special they are to him. Naruto swearing on Hinata's blood to take revenge, just to later on the classic to make the "promise of a lifetime" to both Sasuke and Sakura. Hinata confesses her love and almost dies to save him, but the one who gets the intimate moment with him after the invasion is over is Sakura (the crowd literally parts to put Naruto and Sakura's weird hug in the spotlight). They did a horrendous job rushing to kill Neji and at least we get Hinata holding his hand and going to fight together (sort of?), but then they make a show of Naruto saying that Sakura is kind of his girlfriend and return to the Team 7 obsession agenda like it's nothing.
Naruto is always too focused on his team to think of Hinata. He doesn't try to reach for her in return until The Last. Even then, we get Sakura pushing him to Hinata. We get Sakura having to verbally undermine his feelings. Naruto has to go under genjutsu to think of their memories. It's a mess, made worse by the fact that Naruto was sexually and romantically attracted to other people since he was a kid, but they play the fool card.
Maybe if they had made Naruto slowly start to see her differently. If they had shown Naruto not understanding why he's suddenly more aware or worried about Hinata. If she had become more of an individual in his mind— he going where is she? or being inspired by her in a certain life or death situation, having flashbacks of her, etc...
That's why for me it feels more like brotherly love from his side. He didn't want her to suffer or to be badly treated. He wanted to cheer her up and for her to be recognized. It never occurred to him to date her or go out with her.
You see what I mean?

Billy Talent - Ghost Ship of Cannibal Rats
I really wanted to make a Kaiji / Billy Talent AMV, there are a lot of songs that could go well for it but I decided it'd be fun to just make this one for Espoir. Y'know. The ghost ship of cannibal rats.
It was fun limiting myself to just one arc of the show, especially because usually I end up focusing a lot on brave man road.
