I love your metas so much, you have no idea. I read that 3-part tanuma/natsume analysis about their animexmanga interactions twice already. It's just so good. Also, I was wondering what's your insight on Matoba Seiji. You think he mirrors a part of Natsume as well?

Hi! Sorry for the long wait. And thank you for reading my meta! I’m glad you enjoyed it. :)

To be honest, I don’t really think of Matoba as a foil or mirror for Natsume. Aside from the fact that they’re both powerful, I don’t really think there’s much to go on? He’s certainly a foil in terms of the way he uses his power—his violence and force versus Natsume’s empathy and diplomacy. But they have nothing else in common in terms of upbringing and political power, for example. I suppose they do both share a sense of responsibility for their powers, though that’s expressed in a very different way. (And insofar as this is Matoba being a foil for Natsume, it’s also Matoba being a foil for Natori. And Natori being a foil for Natsume, haha.) Also Matoba is clearly happy to have his powers, whereas Natsume was very much not. Natsume’s feelings have become more complex, though, whereas Matoba’s seem pretty static.

If there are other ways that Matoba is meant to be a foil to Natsume, it’s hard to see through the blinding obviousness of Natori being a foil. There’s so much Natori has in common with Natsume, to the point that it seems to be the theme of Natori’s introductory story. Their background of emotional neglect (especially by family), their tendency to withdraw as a means of protecting those around them, their struggle with figuring out how to have powers and do good, and so on. And since Matoba is so strongly associated with Natori, he’s generally just… right there. Distracting me from Matoba.

In fact, I tend to see Matoba more as a foil for Tanuma. I used to think this only in a half-serious way—why does baby Matoba have to look like Tanuma with a bratty smirk?—but at this point it’s sort of suspiciously apt. Matoba is to Natori what Tanuma is to Natsume, except that they are in many ways reversed.

It goes like this:

Matoba was the first (possibly only) person Natori met of his own age to be involved in yokai or the yokai world. Matoba takes an immediate and strong interest in him.

Tanuma is the first person Natsume met, and the first his own age, to be involved in yokai or the yokai world. Tanuma takes an immediate and strong interest in him. [Note: (a) Taki came later and (b) it’s implied that Taki wouldn’t have had any involvement in the yokai world without her grandfather’s and her own actions. This is not true for Tanuma.]

Both Natori/Matoba and Natsume/Tanuma are protective of each other.

Matoba is noticeably more powerful than Natori. This makes Natori insecure, and distrustful of Matoba’s interest.

Tanuma is noticeably less powerful than Natsume. This makes Tanuma insecure, and he often minimizes himself in his relationship with Natsume.

Matoba is overly forceful and brash, and his attempts to connect to Natori backfire as Natori reads his actions as condescending and controlling.

Tanuma is overly passive and shy, and this makes it harder for Natsume to correctly interpret his actions as acts of love and not merely kindness.

Matoba and Natori are both rigid thinkers who fail to understand each other even when they try.

Tanuma and Natsume are both empathetic thinkers, with Tanuma in particular being able to see the other’s perspective with relative ease.

Matoba and Natori are too proud to talk about how they feel, which makes it even harder for them to understand each other.

Tanuma and Natsume lack social experience, which arguably makes them more willing to talk about their feelings. It also makes it harder for them to understand their own feelings.

Matoba and Tanuma represent the same opportunity, except that Tanuma succeeds where the former fails, precisely because their personalities are so different.

In other words, Natori/Matoba has become a foil for Natsume/Tanuma, with the former’s dysfunction contrasting the latter’s success. And that’s the thing I’m most interested in, now!
