The Colorist
God is an Indian---He loves gay color so...
Red, yellow, purple, oranges and blue
Are in the sky at the sunset, at the sunrise, too.
God is Irish--He likes green color best.
All the trees and grasses in green garments oft-times dress.
God is Saxon, stern and cold.
For snow is white and ice is cold.
The downy clouds are white. And a
White moon peeks when lovers pledge their troth.
Cotton is white and snowy lambkin's fleece.
God is African---for night is robed in black.
The twinkling stars are black men's eyes,
The black clouds, tempests tell.
While little seeds of flowers birthed are
Tans and browns and black....

The baby I hold in my arms is a black baby.
Today I set him in the sun and
Sunbeams danced on his head.
The baby I hold in my arms is a black baby.
I toil, and I cannot always cuddle him.
I place him on the ground at my feet.
He presses the warm earth with his hands,
He lifts the sand and laughs to see
It flow through his chubby fingers.
I watch to discern which are his hands,
Which is the sand… .
Lo … the rich loam is black like his hands.
The baby I hold in my arms is a black baby.
Today the coal-man brought me coal.
sixteen dollars a ton is the price I pay for coal.–
Costly fuel … though they say:
– If it is buried deep enough and lies hidden long enough
‘Twill be no longer coal but diamonds… .
My black baby looks at me.
His eyes are like coals,
They shine like diamonds.
― Anita Scott Coleman, Black Baby
Anita Scott Coleman was a relatively unknown but important western contributor to the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico in 1890. Anita Scott Coleman became a published writer who produced more than thirty short stories as the Harlem Renaissance emerged. Though never a resident of Harlem, she epitomized the goals of its writers. Coleman published stories, essays, and poems which appeared in national magazines such as The Half-Century Magazine, The Competitor, The Crisis, The Messenger, and Opportunity: Journal of Negro Life during the 1920s and 1930s. The last three periodicals were major outlets for Harlem Renaissance writers. Her publications emphasize racial pride and issues of import to black women as well as inveighing against white racism, lynching, employment discrimination, and segregation.

Found in the Archives! This rare Yiddish book “Negro Poetry in America” was published in 1936 in Moscow, is from our International Workers Order/ Jewish People’s Fraternal Order collection and contains works of Harlem Renaissance writers including Langston Hughes’ poems, The Negro Speaks of Rivers, Dream Variations, Good Morning Revolution, and Song for a Dark Girl. The IWO commissioned one of Langston Hughes most famous works, his anthem “Let America Be America Again.” This work has been continually performed and is very much part of a contemporary repertoire. Only one of 7 known copies, this edition includes a handwritten dedication by the translator to Itche Goldberg, head of the JPFO's Educational department. Other writers in the volume include Langston Hughes, Thomas T. Fletcher, Joseph S. Cotter, Countee Cullen, Anita Scott Coleman, Richard Wright, Claude McCay, and many more. Thanks to Cornell Jewish Studies Professor Elissa Sampson for this rare and amazing find. * * * #CornellRAD #InternationalWorkersOrder #LangstonHughes @rarecornell @cornell_library @cornellpublichistory @cujewishstudies @cornellilr https://www.instagram.com/p/CbNdjRGrgJP/?utm_medium=tumblr

Black History Month 2020 (2)
Bessie Coleman a.k.a. Queen Bess / Brave Bessie.
Many have heard about Amelia Earhart but not so many have heard about Bessie Coleman, the first African American, and the first Native American woman pilot, who actually got her license two years before Ms Earhart did.
Born in Texas, her mother, Susan Coleman, was an African American maid, and her father George Coleman was a Native American sharecropper. Bessie grew up helping her mother pick cotton and wash laundry to earn extra money.
Before becoming a pilot, Bessie completed one term of college at Langston University. She then went to the Burnham School of Beauty Culture and became a manicurist in a local barbershop in Chicago, where she lived with her brothers. One of her brothers, who had served in the Army in France during World War I often teased Bessie about how her job: “women ain’t never goin’ to fly, not like those women I saw in France,” he said.
Bessie applied to many flight schools across the US, but no school would take her because she was African American, Native American and a woman. So she ended up teaching herself French and applying to a flight school in France. Finally, she was accepted at the Caudron Brothers' School of Aviation in Le Crotoy, France. She received her international pilot’s license on June 15, 1921 from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (this is two years earlier than Amelia Earhart got her license!).
In 1922, she performed the first public flight by an African American woman. She toured the country giving flight lessons, performing in flight shows (under her “stage” names Queen Bess and Brave Bessie), and she encouraged African Americans and women to learn how to fly. She refused to speak or perform anywhere that was segregated or discriminated against African Americans.
Unfortunately, Bessie died at a very young age, on April 30, 1926, during a rehearsal for an aerial show (she was not piloting the plane, but she sat in the passenger seat).
In 1931, the Challenger Pilots’ Association of Chicago began an annual flyover of Coleman’s grave to mark the anniversary of her passing, a tradition that continues today.
About this project
This tweet by @oshinsims made me realise that, unlike other celebrations (such as Pride), there is not much of a celebration of Black History Month around the simblr community (at least that I have seen). So I thought it would be nice to commemorate Black History Month this year by learning and then by spreading knowledge, which is what this celebration should be all about. Anyone who is interested is of course welcome to do this too! I would love to see who inspired you!

I know you're pretty involved in the australian writing scene, do you have any recommendations of aborginal authors? particularly any who write sci fi or fantasy, but i'll check out most genres
Oh my gosh! Yes, anon! I have so many incredible Aboriginal authors and works to recommend! I was actually pretty lucky – I worked at a writers centre for five years, and we shared our office with black&write, so I was surrounded by incredible First Nations writers and authors on a daily basis.
I’ve compiled a list of recommendations for you below, and where publicly available, have included the names of their communities in brackets, because Australia after all should look like this, and not like this.
Also full heads up, most of these authors are women or non-binary. There’s no particular reason for this! Just I gravitate more towards women’s books and stories, so am in a better position to recommend them.
Melissa Lucashenko (of Goorie and European heritage) wrote what is probably one of my favourite books of the last couple of years, Too Much Lip. It’s a family drama that focuses around intergenerational trauma (among many other things!) and is generally pretty fabulous. Her other novel, Mullumbimby, is also great and worth checking out!
I grew up with Alexis Wright’s (Waanyi Nation) Carpentaria, so have forever had a pretty huge softspot for it. Her recently released The Swan Book is also beautiful, but go in prepared. It’s a very harrowing read focused on a rape survivor, and it can be complicated to read if you’re not really familiar with Aboriginal mythology and spirituality. It is sci-fi / fantasy though, so it could be right up your alley. :-)
You should definitely check out Claire G. Coleman (Wirlomin Noongar). Her book Terra Nullius, is an awesome dystopian novel about Australia getting re-colonised in a mysterious future, and while I haven’t read her second book, The Old Lie, yet, I’ve heard it’s similarly terrific sci-fi! She’s also a great op-ed writer and essayist, so I’ll link to that page on her website too.
Other great books I’ve read:
- Ellen van Neerven’s (Mununjali Yugambeh) poetry collection Comfort Food is really, really special, and I’ve actually just ordered her second collection, Throat which came out a few weeks ago. Her short story collection, Heat and Light is also very good.
- Anything by Tony Birch, but partictularly The White Girl, which is a brilliant fiction novel which takes place during the very real era where fair-skinned Aboriginal children were being taken from their families in the 1960s.
- Grace Beside Me by Sue McPherson (Wiradjuri) is a wonderful magical realism YA novel.
- Anita Heiss (Wiradjuri) writes a range of really strong commentary and op-eds, which I highly recommend, but she also writes a delightful Aboriginal-focused contemporary women’s fiction series in the vein of Sex and the City. Paris Dreaming is the first one in the series, and it’s a mega fun beach read.
- And finally, another fave - The Yield by Tara June Winch (Wiradjuri) which is a stunning novel centred around family, culture and language.
Other writers:
- Nayuka Gorrie (Kurnai/Gunai, Gunditjmara, Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta) is an excellent journalist and op ed writer. You can read some of their stuff over at The Guardian Australia. They’ve also written for TV, particularly Black Comedy which is an awesome sketch show
- Nakkiah Lui (Gamillaroi and Torres Strait Islander) is an activist, journalist, playwright and comedian. She also co-hosted Buzzfeed Australia’s podcast, Pretty for an Aboriginal, which was / is an A+ listen!
- Leah Purcell (Goa, Gunggari, Wakka Wakka Murri) is a playwright, actress, screenwriter and director. She directed a lot of the Aborginal sci-fi series Clever Man, but also has written a range of terrific plays, including the fab The Drover’s Wife which is currently being adapted into a feature film she’s directing (and my sister worked on, so there’s a bit of a shameless plug there too, haha).
Also books I’ve had recommended to me, but haven’t read yet:
- That Dead Man’s Dance by Kim Scott (Noongar)
- Salt by Bruce Pascoe
- Sand Talk: How Indigenous Thinking Can Save the World by Tyson Yunkaporta (Apalech)
- Ruby Moonlight by Ali Cobby Eckermann (Yankunytjatjara Kokatha)
Hope that gets you started! And please let me know if there are any First Nations authors you love! I’d love to read them. :-)
