God this article is an exercise in abuse apologism:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Accusing the accuser of being a goldigger? ✅️
Accusing the accuser of tarnishing someone's reputation? ✅️
Saying that there is no evidence to support the accusation? ✅️
Mentioning mob mentality and cancel culture? ✅️✅️
Saying that someone's (the alleged abuser's mostly) reputation and/or career is at stake? ✅️
Tumblr media
I bet the writer is a White woman.
Tumblr media
Yuppppp. White women supporting abusive White women? The White feminism tracks.

what did mia goth do?
Oh boy.
Allegedly, she almost stepped on an extra and he told the second assistant director to tell her that because he could've gotten hurt, so what did Mia do?
She kicked him in the head, giving him a concussion. She also taunted him and basically mocked him asking what he was going to do about it.
A couple days later he was basically fired because his agency told him production didn't want him for his remaining two days of work.
So he's suing her for battery and Ti West, A24 and Mia again for wrongful termination.
I just don't wanna see a movie that stars a woman who may have assaulted somebody because they didn't want to be hurt. But given who Mia is romantically...

Diverse Stardew Valley 4.0 is officially here!
DSV 4.0 is a pretty different beast than 3.0+, and it’s bigger & better than ever 😆 The biggest difference is that we’re back on NexusMods and we’ve returned to an all-in-one download: the changes we made for 3.0 was the best move for the DSV team at the time, but things have changed in the last couple of years and we’ve updated accordingly.
DSV 4.0 also overhauls the interior of the mod with a shiny new C# engine, DSV Core, coded by the amazing KediDili. This should improve performance and make it much easier to configure DSV to your liking!
It’d take too long to list everything that 4.0 adds or changes, but here’s a quick summary:
Added over 250+ lines of variant-based dialogue
Added new additional variants which can be used alongside other variants:
Nonbinary Abigail, Sebastian, and Emily
Aro-Ace Gus
Jewish Mullners and Elliott
Hard-of-Hearing Haley
Added new small cultural map edits for modded variants
Re-added Marigold, Linus's service dog (this option requires Sprites in Detail, Custom NPC Exclusions, & Anti-Social NPCs) with improved higher-resolution sprites
Added new minor config options:
Mermaid Pendants - Rival Hearts & Canon Couples
Flower Queen's Crown Immersion Mode
Vanilla Beach Style
Enable Variant-Based Dialogue and individual dialogue toggles for each character
Abigail Goth Makeup
Elliott Helix Piercing & Ear Piercing
Penny & Pam Dynamic Outfits
Penny Freckles
Shane Punk Accessories
Marnie Dynamic Outfits
Clint Beard
Reworked character art for modded Pam, Black Haley & Emily, and modded Sikh and non-Sikh Harvey so that they have brighter, more accurate skintones
Clarified cultural backgrounds on the DSV website for several characters:
Romani Haley and Emily are of the Lovari vitsa
Black Haley and Emily have Ghanaian heritage
Indian Sandy is Deccani
Native Leah is of the Haida nation
Black Elliott has Jamaican heritage
Updated many outfits
Added compatibility with many mods
We also have a non-seasonal version for anyone who just wants the diversity edits (although it also contains some small tidbits for vanilla players such as improved beach art) and an add-on pack so that Always Raining in the Valley NPCs Sterling, Mia, and Henry can become Flower Queens through DSV’s Flower Queen’s Crown feature.
The DSV website has also been updated with visual guides to all of the new options, so please check it out! For any translators or mod authors interested in adding compatibility, there's also a new page with detailed instructions to help you out.
Thank you all for supporting DSV! 💖

BLOGTOBER 10/6-7/2023: X, PEARL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ti West is so frustrating. His more successful movies have earned him enough good will that I've been willing to wait for him like some war bride while he turns out things I find unforgivable, assuming that someone with his demonstrated talent will right himself eventually. For this reason I wish I liked X more. I find it very watchable and I don't hate the premise, but I also really object to parts of it. Some of it is just half-baked; like I kind of enjoy the movie's conversation about how pornography inflates or injures people's vanity and shines a light on inner moral conflicts, but it's all kind of gestural, I don't know if any real conclusions are reached. And I really don't appreciate the take on hagsploitation here, with sexy Mia Goth under a hundred pounds of foam rubber reminding us all of how scary aging is--which connects to this questionable tradition in horror where the monster is a human who is alienated due to their looks, and we'd better learn to fear such people because being sexually undesirable is a punishment so cruel that it could make you dangerously insane. I'm really interested in this trope, where the corrupting force is just physical ugliness (and/or the inability to get laid), but in the case of X I would have found it more compelling if the villains were played by actual old people.
Tumblr media
The movies we think of when we hear the terms "hagsploitation" or "psycho biddie" generally star actual older actresses who bring a certain kind of thoughtful, energetic presence to their roles, and that's why they're so effective; when it's just a young person pretending to be old, it requires the viewer to really be afraid of and repulsed by the basic concept of an old person. I've heard some arguments that X is "sex positive" because of its graphic scene of the fake old people doing it, and although I'd agree that some amount of pity is elicited by that (with the husband explicitly pitying his horny, ugly wife), I think it's a big reach to suggest that that content is celebratory or elevating in any way. Again, I might change my tune if it were real old people, but in the meantime the whole production is just young people telling this story about how old people are gross and you might become a crazed killer if you stopped getting laid, and that's just not good enough for me. Maybe if the old people were more like anti-heroes and less like general monstrosities slobbering in the dark, I would have gotten more out of it.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the prequel PEARL tells a compelling story about a real monster who is complex and charismatic enough to make you sympathize with her, even though she is unambiguously villainous. I do think this movie is somewhat overhyped, but I'm not mad about it; I'm happy that this happened for Ti West, who I definitely want to make more good movies, and PEARL has a lot of cool qualities. It stretches its $1mil budget a surprising distance to make a period piece (usually inadvisable for a cheap movie) with a lot of style and class. Ti West has a talent for genre pastiche--the present movie is somehow a cross between THE WIZARD OF OZ and HUSH...HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE--but it doesn't feel like an empty fashion statement, which is the problem I usually have with modern horror productions that do a forced impression of older genre films. Despite whatever is familiar about it, PEARL feels really fresh and original. Tellingly, I don't even feel like enumerating this movie's flaws. It's a charmer and it deserves its success.

I watched Pearl last week and Mia Goth was amazing!! (X is next in the queue.) I’m certain her 3 min smile at the end will haunt me forever 😬 And if I wasn’t already a vegetarian, I’d become one after the image of the maggot infested pig on their dinner table 🤢 In all seriousness, the underlying story was intriguing and I’m curious to know your thoughts on one or both films!
Oh, Lee you poor thing 😅 I'm sorry that you were subjected to that scene! Good thing that you had a nice ride tho 😁
It's been a while since i watched Pearl so my review/thoughts aren't that fresh (and i have a tendency to forget thing very easily, even the ones i love - blame the ADHD) but the impressions that stuck with me are overwhelmingly positive.
I like how the movie doesn't shy away from how problematic Pearl is. Her motivations are relatable and almost paint her as an underdog but the story doesn't try to buy our sympathy with that or redeem her actions. As an audience we aren't blind to her flaws and the fact that she's not as talented as she thinks she is. That's the strongest part of it all for me, alongside Mia's acting of course (i wih some parts of the monologue didn't hit that hard 😅).
As for X... i rewatched recently and it wasn't as exciting as my first watch. It's a tribute to slashers and since those aren't my type of movies, it fell a bit flat for me. Also (mild spoilers) there's a section that tries to be anti-preaching but the way that it's delivered its annoying and ironically preachy, defeating the purpose of their argument (i hope that some of what i wrote makes sense). However, Mia is the highlight of the movie (shoker's i know 🤭) and not as Maxine but as an older Pearl. Bitch is unsettling as fuck 😂
I'm eager for MaXXXine and what kind of genre it will explore! Thank you for asking my opinions on it, darl. I love to ramble 😁 What other movies are on you radar recently? Oh, what did you think of Saltburn 👀

hiiii <3 big ask big answer is what i'm expecting would LOVE to know your top 5/faves across various media that are new(in release or just new to you) this year! so: shows, movies, games, books, songs/albums, new artists you've discovered etc
OMG AAAAA I LOVE THIS ASK
brief comment i wanted to make, but this was the year i finally took control of my mental health and went to go see someone about it so congratulations to me for finally breaking down the wall of "im fine" and allowing myself to admit that i could use some help. that aside, lets get into it! beware, possible spoilers
MOVIES
1. Nope (dir. Jordan Peele) - this movie surprised me so much and reflects a LOT of my views on performative/spectacle-like behavior in front of the Camera and the effects things like hollywood or social media could potentially have on people...not going to get into that but i just liked the movie alot okay
2. X (dir. Ti West) - love me some camp. love mia goth. i also really liked Pearl and cannot WAIT for MaXXXine, i am so ready
3. Cruel Intentions (dir. Roger Kumble) - i dont think 2022 was the first year i watched Cruel Intentions but everytime i watch it, it feels like something brand new...i am so compelled to read the book that its based on like seriously
4. Turning Red (dir. Domee Shi) - this is the only Disney movie that exists to me...the mother-daughter relationship portrayed here is just so personal
5. Kiki’s Delivery Service (dir. Hayao Miyazaki) - yeah im extremely late to watching this lol. i watched literally every other ghibli film growing up but somehow, in some way, skipped over Kiki. so i watched it over the summer as an adult and needless to say...yeah i missed out as a kid asjashd
6. American Psycho (dir. Mary Harron) - this is the funniest film ive seen this whole year. im not even kidding
TV SHOWS
1. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul - never thought id enjoy a show about a middle-aged white male turning to meth production to make ends meet and becoming the most annoying character ever created, but here we are. loved it, and literally EVERYONE around walt deserved so much better (jesse, gus, johnny/saul, mike, skylar, marie, hank)
2. Ranma 1/2 - ive taken a break from watching new anime this year and started diving into older ones. i love ranma simply bc its a bit ahead of its time and is just so easy to digest. just a fun little show!!! a great way to take my mind off of shit
3. The Sandman - just found out recently that this was a DC comic so congrats to DC for successfully infiltrating my anti-superhero visual barrier LOL. anyways i am in dire NEED of the next season
4. You - PENN BADGLEY. thats all im going to say. im a huge fan of Gossip Girl (2007) and as soon as i saw him playing the lead character i RAN to watch the first season when it dropped. was not disappointed
5. The Witcher - ive never played the game lol but the show is so good...im not a fan of GoT (and therefore will never watch HotD) so this show p much fills the dark fantasy void for me
6. Bridgerton - im so glad i got over my weird distaste and finally gave this show a try...i see the hype, i see it!! and the show itself is so beautiful to look at, despite being historically innacurate or whatever
7. Gossip Girl (2007) - ive watched and rewatched this show a grand total of maybe like....20 times in my life total. rewatched it again this year. all six seasons. it never gets old despite being the most ridiculous insipid shit ever. im also currently watching the new version, and while i love the cast and maybe the soundtrack, it doesnt match up to the campy and fun vibe that the first one had. it takes itself way too seriously and the plot is almost nonexistent lol
but anyway, lets move on to music!! im skipping over books bc i have currently finished NONE from the book haul i had back in october.
MUSIC
just gonna list out a bunch of songs that have carried me thru the last half of this year :]
ass like that victoria monet / bang (my body) chase icon / meta angel fka twigs / wish i never kehlani / king for a day pierce the veil, kellin quinn / pass the nirvana pierce the veil / antagonist nova twins / gibson girl ethel cain / like a tattoo sade / the perfect pair beabadoobee / so it goes tamino / daybreak’s bell l’arc-en-ciel / colors flow / distant tevomxntana, cayo / grapefruit tove lo
sorry if this is extremely long. thanks for asking!!!!!! ❤️

It's All in the Execution
Hello again!
Today is the Trans Day of Remembrance. It caps off Trans Awareness Week. It's a somber occasion. And, content warning for gun violence, hate crimes, injury, and death, this year it is particularly somber as we're reeling from the tragedy at Club Q. It is doubtless that these two incidents are connected. And so today we remember Daniel Aston, as well as the others who were killed. We remember the countless other trans lives that've been ended prematurely. This is going out awfully late into the evening, but please take some time to mourn and grieve and hope for peace and justice for those we've lost.
In terms of practical action, tell a trans person you love them. Maybe send them some money. You can also donate to the Colorado Healing Fund. Or Trans Lifeline. Or the Transgender Law Center. Share this map of informed consent HRT facilities. Follow up with your representatives on any anti-trans legislation in your area. Advocate for your communities and be willing to protect the people in them, by force if necessary.
To get the other serious matters out of the way up top, there are a few comics creators who could really use your help right now. My friend Jeffrey Veregge was diagnosed with Lupus last year and is still hospitalized and his family needs assistance. Tess Fowler and Chris Gutierrez are currently dealing with their own medical emergency. And those are just the ones directly on my radar.
And, finally, our attention turns to Owasso, Oklahoma, where a public school library did one of the dumbest things I can remember hearing about in recent memory: at one parent's complaint about one book, Blankets by Craig Thompson, the school pulled ALL the graphic novels from the shelves for two months and are planning on returning them and adding new ones, but only after every single book is examined page-by-page by an adult who can flag any possibility of sexual or other offensive material. I can only hope that Tim Reiland's daughter grows up to be a more thoughtful individual than he is and that the people in charge of this library are reminded of their duty to present challenging material.
With that all said, I'd also still like to talk a bit about the execution of thematic goals in your work, but if you're too drained, I get it. You can come back later.
This year, Becca and I have been seeing a lot of horror movies. In college, I started getting more into horror and now it's probably the genre most likely to get me into a theater. So far, the two best horror movies we've seen this year are neck-in-neck: Pearl and Barbarian (with X, the other movie in Ti West and Mia Goth's trilogy landing as a solid 3rd, and TBH, we still haven't seen Nope though that's on the agenda for the coming week). I could and will gush about Pearl and X at some point soon. I'll also throw in a good word for House of the Devil, which I feel is a very closely related movie, also by Ti West. Sorry, getting distracted already! Anyway, the point is that A LOT of the movies we've seen this year have been thematically very similar, including those two. But the other three perfectly illustrate a sort of Goldilocks scale of execution of an idea.
The Poppa Bear of the group is Men. I know this movie's very divisive. Some people quite like it for reasons I can't explain. Like Poppa Bear's soup which was too hot or his bed which was too hard, Men was an unpleasant experience. The premise is Alex Garland read a couple articles about feminism and decided he should make a movie about how scary men are to women, forgetting that he already made that movie, Ex Machina. A traumatized woman working through a violent incident in her life goes out to a small English town and all the men in town are portrayed by one actor (an actually impressive feat, but not so much so as to outweigh the movie's flaws) and she thinks she's going crazy because they're all one guy and then the last third gets supernatural, but more importantly, super stupid. "Men are scary" is a really simple theme to build a story on and a worthy one because they are (see above). But one of the things that makes men scary is that they are capable of so much in the real world. That's what Men forgets. Sure, it recognizes that men abuse women physically and emotionally, particularly through gaslighting, but one of it's biggest failings is that as the story continues, the horror becomes removed from that reality. Is it gaslighting if all the men look the same because they're actually played by one guy and also are after you personally? What's the deal with the big "horror set piece" of the story being all the men who are the same guy birthing each other out of the mouth and other assorted made-up holes? It's clearly chosen because there're historically strong connections of womanhood and childbearing (reinforced by the ultimate arrival of the pregnant friend), but uhh... other than her friend being pregnant, it has no bearing on the main character's lived experience. It's just seeing a man do a "womanly" thing like giving birth that's "scary". And that's not scary, nor is it particularly smart commentary because it doesn't actually have anything to do with why men are scary. Anyway, do yourself a favor and don't watch Men. It's the pits. You can watch Ex Machina instead. Or maybe you could watch...
The Momma Bear of the group is Don't Worry Darling. Another divisive movie. This one's debatably a "horror", it's more psychological thriller, but I think those're inter-related enough to count. Like Momma Bear's bed, it's not firm enough. The premise is Harry Styles and Florence Pugh live an idyllic 1950s-esque planned community, organized by the mysterious Chris Pine. While Harry, Chris, and the other men go off every day to work on a mysterious project, the women are restricted to the community and to lives as housewives. But all is not what it seems... Spoilers: The men? Slightly scary. Unlike Men (BTW, hate that as a title because it makes talking about other men in the same analysis so hard), rather than turning the systemic oppression of women into a tête-à-tête between one woman and one many-man, it actually explores things on the levels of real communities and the power dynamics that men have both historically exercised and that many men seem to still fantasize about. Genuinely, the highest praise I can give this movie is that the female-gazed horror is a male-power fantasy. It indulges in the reasons why men act the way they do and in doing so actually gives it a reason to be scary. In terms of it not being firm enough, it's a bit unevenly paced and toned, so the stakes don't really feel material for most of the movie--there's too much mystery about what's going on that even when the audience knows something is wrong, they don't feel that the danger is imminent. It's a solid 6.5 or 7 out of 10, but again, you'd probably be better off watching the director's other movie, Booksmart. Or, you could watch...
Barbarian is a movie you should go into with very little knowledge. The Baby Bear of the group all you need to know is that it is just right. Nah, but like, if you usually check content warnings before horror movies, do that, otherwise, the only description you're getting from me is a woman of color shows up at her AirB&B only to find that it's already occupied by a man claiming he rented it who invites her in to sort things out and from there things happen. And, hey, that premise--already more realistically scary than either of the other two because that's shit that could actually happen. It is a complex movie that manages to actually have something to say--and was written and directed by one of the Whitest Kids U' Know (which I just found out, the twists keep coming with this one!). But, suffice to say, by the end of the movie, you'll get that men are scary and why and have that layered with so much more. It's a masterpiece of filmmaking and of using your story--the location, the cast, the pacing, the plot elements--to tell a cohesive story that not only covers the thematic message you want to convey, but embodies it and grows into something more as it continues.
This is going awfully long again, so let me conclude with two last things.
1. The live reenactment of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip by Alec Robbins, Grace Freud, and friends was AMAZING. Some of the funniest comedy I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live. If the TV show had been half as good as this one-off reenactment, I actually think it would've lasted more than a season. I don't know that anyone will ever be able to see it if you weren't there, but it was magical!
2. Becca's got their last artist's alley of the year on Tuesday. It's NiteNite Night with Biz Baz Club and New Motion Brewery. There'll be artists selling cool stuff just in time for the holidays and karaoke! Becca's going to have some new merch debuting! It'll be a good time! I'll be there too, but only to help Becca. More info in the image! Hope to see you there!

Pic of the Week #2: As promised with the other post this week, here's a not great picture I took of Tiansheng and I cuddled on the couch when Becca was out of town earlier in the week. He's cute!

Film Rec: High Life (2018) dir. Claire Denis
Tumblr media
Medium: Film
Genre: Fuckbox in Space (but make it Art)
Tags/Content Warnings: major character death (in spades), graphic depictions of rape, graphic depiction of sexual assault, murder, nonconsensual drugging, nonconsensual somnophilia, abuse of incarcerated people, forced pregnancy, medical abuse, medical experimentation, racism between characters, anti-Blackness (between characters), infant death, animal death, death of a pet, death of dogs, brief somewhat mild gore, voyeurism, the cutest damn baby you’ve ever seen
tl;dr: I would not recommend this movie if you are uncomfortable with depictions of rape or violence.
Are you ever in the mood to watch something that will fuck you up for a week or more? High Life (2018) will deliver. Featuring mumblecore Robert Pattinson (before The Batman made it cool), a superlatively terrifying and electric performance from Juliette Binoche (mark me down as scared and horny), and a very literal fuck machine in space, High Life is one you won’t soon forget.
The film follows death row inmates who have agreed to an experimental suicide mission to space under the guise of advancing science, namely to record data on the galaxy’s nearest black hole. The film follows Monte (Pattinson) as he raises his infant and then teenage daughter Willow (Jessie Ross, Scarlett Lindsey) alone in deep space cut off from human civilization, slowly revealing what transpired with the mission, the ship crew and leader (Binoche), and Willow’s mother (Mia Goth). The relationship between a father and a daughter who has known nothing but the derelict ship and her silent yet devoted guardian is the terse, prickly vehicle.
Denis is an unorthodox and immensely visionary director, crafting a narrative that layers unflinching horrors with unsentimental moments of unexpected tenderness. High Life reveals the worst of humanity in a way that is more matter-of-fact than didactic. Denis’ conceit is daring and demanding, and the script, performances, and cinematography rise to the challenge. Churning with conflict, exploding into violence, revelling in quiet beauty and brutalities alike, the camera lingers in a voyeuristic fashion over it all, never bogged down in a single moment or allowing the viewer more than a moment’s respite.
Denis is uncompromising in her pursuit of her vision, responding to a question during the film’s screening about why she does not portray more strong female characters with a succinct (and very French) response: “I’m not a social worker.” High Life marks her English language debut and is distributed in the US by A24.
High Life is available to stream on Netflix (US, Canada, possibly others) or uh, wherever you get movies.

X (2022, dir. Ti West) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
I've always been interested in Ti West as a director. I saw The Sacrament a few years ago and absolutely loved it, and his other films (namely House of the Devil and In a Valley of Violence) made their way on my "to watch" list as a result. I'm also a huge fan of early slashers like Texas Chainsaw and that bunch. So, I'll admit, I'm acknowledging a slight bias here, but I genuinely really liked X. It's not a perfect movie, by any stretch: the subtext is at times too on the nose and at other times not quite clear enough, and the story itself isn't anything to necessarily write home about, but the wonderfully talented cast (particularly Mia Goth, whose performances I can't praise enough), its anti-societal norm, sex positive stance, and its willingness to take the genre away from its traditionally outdated moral code when it comes to promiscuous female characters and sex all elevate the film above other modern slashers and allow it to stand on its own as a valuable and entertaining horror film.
Score: 8/10 (for full transparency I have re-evaluated and raised my score to a 10/10 on subsequent viewings, but I will leave my rating here as it was when I wrote the review back in March.)
Currently available for streaming on Showtime.
As a side-note, I love this sort of Renaissance slasher movies are starting to go through. We had Candyman last year standing out as not only the greatest horror film of 2021, but also one of the greatest films of 2021 period (incoming Top 20 list coming soon). Now, this year, we have a new installment of Scream that managed to live up to and outdo most of the rest of its franchise, and now X. It's great to see fresh, new ideas in a subgenre normally bogged down with rehashes and dead air.

querido amigo,
