If MC was having a flare of her chronic pain...
It's been a while since I've done any headcanons, but I got in a mood today and thought I'd just jot down my thoughts, despite how random they are.
Jake and Lucas would be making whole diets that suit MC's needs – if the flare up is due to inflammation, both men would make meals that are heavy and in anti-inflammatory properties. Jake would find it easier than Lucas would, but Lucas knows how important diet is and would seek out that information where he could.
Lucas would also help MC do some gentle movement. Pain makes everything hard, but his job as a physiotherapist means he knows how important it is and would help put together a plan so MC can take it easy and pace her activities, but also do some gentle exercises.
If Jake knows she's going to have a flare due to symptoms the night before or she's having a multiple day/week flare, he'd be getting up early so he can have everything prepared for the day, especially when he's at work. Meal-prep so she only has to heat up her lunch or dinner, making sure she doesn't have to move too far for essentials, including her laptop if she's working from home, and any mobility aids she needs in arms reach. I think Bobby would be similar, but slightly less prepared than Jake (at first).
Gary would genuinely panic, but do everything he can to help, and would do anything MC asked him to. It might be running her a hot bath, bringing her tea or food, or getting his nan to help them if he hasn't learnt to cook yet.
(I may add more later, but I just wanted to get this out of my head)

The Nutritional Value of Rice Water
Rice water, often overlooked, is the starchy liquid left over after rice is cooked or soaked. It is packed with nutrients, which can provide several health benefits. Let’s delve into what makes rice water a beneficial additive to your diet.
Nutrients Found in Rice Water
Rice water contains vitamins such as B1, B2, B6, and niacin, as well as minerals like potassium, magnesium, and zinc. Additionally, it houses amino acids that promote overall health. The starch in the water acts to facilitate slow sugar release, providing a consistent source of energy without spiking your blood sugar levels. This makes it not only nourishing but also a good hydration source.
Health Benefits of Rice Water
Aside from its potential in weight-management plans, rice water offers various health advantages. It’s known for improving digestion due to its high starch content, which aids in the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. The presence of antioxidants helps combat skin aging while its anti-inflammatory properties can soothe irritated skin and improve hair health. Rice water has also been suggested to boost immunity and improve cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure.
Health Benefits of RICE WATER
Drinking Rice Water and Weight Loss
Moving from general health benefits to weight management, rice water can be an effective component in weight loss strategies. Its properties support metabolic health and offer benefits that range from appetite control to improved digestion.
How Rice Water Aids in Weight Loss
Rice water may contribute to weight loss through several mechanisms:
– Appetite Control: The starch in rice water can provide a feeling of fullness, which helps reduce calorie intake throughout the day.
– Improved Digestion: As rice water aids gut health, better digestion is promoted which can result in more efficient metabolism and weight management.
– Low Calorie Content: Rice water is an excellent drink choice when trying to reduce calorie intake because it contains minimal calories while still being filling.
– Blood Sugar Regulation: The slow release of sugars helps in maintaining steady blood sugar levels, curbing the urge for frequent snacking.
These attributes make rice water a conducive choice for those looking to shed some pounds while ensuring their body is nourished sufficiently.
Incorporating Rice Water into Your Weight Loss Plan
Incorporating rice water into your weight loss strategy is straightforward and versatile:
– Drink Before Meals: Consuming rice water before meals can help reduce hunger, thus decreasing the likelihood of overeating.
– Replace High-Calorie Drinks: Substitute sodas and high-sugar drinks with rice water to reduce calorie intake while still keeping hydrated.
– Meal Prep: Use rice water in the preparation of soups and stews to enhance nutritional value and help control hunger pangs.
These simple steps can significantly enhance your weight management efforts without requiring drastic dietary changes.
Success Stories of Weight Loss with Rice Water
Many individuals attribute part of their weight loss success to incorporating rice water into their diet. For instance, Emily from Wisconsin shares how drinking rice water daily before breakfast helped her lose 20 pounds over six months. She noted feeling fuller throughout the morning and having less desire to snack before lunch. Mark from California found that replacing his afternoon soda with rice water not only reduced his caloric intake but also improved his digestion, contributing to a total weight loss of 15 pounds in three months.
These stories highlight the potential of rice water as a complement to traditional diet and exercise plans for those looking to lose weight. They suggest that with consistency and appropriate integration into one’s diet, rice water can play a significant role in achieving weight loss goals.
Making Rice Water
Making rice water is a straightforward practice that can be added to your daily routine. Whether you opt for traditional brewing methods or quick and easy alternatives, the process essentially involves the extraction of nutrients from rice through soaking or boiling. Below, you’ll find the steps involved in both traditional and speedy methods, allowing you to choose the one best suited to your schedule and preference.
Traditional Method
Health Benefits of RICE WATER
The traditional method of making rice water is practiced widely across various cultures, especially in Asia. It requires minimal ingredients—just rice and water. Here’s how to do it:
Start with the Rice: Take half a cup of uncooked rice. The type of rice is not strictly important, but white rice is most commonly used.
Rinse Thoroughly: Wash the rice gently under cold water to remove any dirt or impurities. This step ensures a cleaner rice water.
Soak the Rice: After rinsing, add the rice to a bowl with two to three cups of water. Let it soak for 30 minutes to 4 hours. The longer you soak, the more concentrated the nutrients in the water will be.
Strain and Store: After soaking, strain the rice water into a clean container, discarding the rice (or you can cook it!). Your rice water can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Quick and Easy Recipes
Health Benefits of RICE WATER
For those on a tighter schedule or looking for an even easier method, quick rice water recipes are the way to go. Here’s the simplified version:
Boil the Rice: Use more water than you usually would for cooking rice. For example, if using one cup of rice, use four cups of water.
Let It Simmer: Once the water reaches a boil, turn down the heat and let it simmer until the rice is cooked.
Strain the Water: Strain out the rice, collecting the water in a jar or bottle. This rice water is ready to drink once cooled, or you can store it in the refrigerator to chill.
Rice water made using the boiling method tends to be more concentrated, so you may choose to dilute it with additional water based on your taste preferences.
Precautions and Considerations
Tumblr media
While rice water is generally safe and beneficial for many, there are some precautions and considerations to keep in mind before incorporating it into your diet as a weight loss aid or health supplement.
Potential Side Effects
Health Benefits of RICE WATER
Rice water is high in starch, which can contribute to constipation or bloating in some people. It’s advisable to start with small quantities to see how your body responds. Moreover, excessively drinking rice water in pursuit of weight loss might also lead to nutrient deficiencies if it displaces other nutritious foods from your diet. Moderate consumption is key.
Who Should Avoid Drinking Rice Water
Health Benefits of RICE WATER
Certain individuals should consider avoiding rice water or consulting with a healthcare provider before starting. These include:
– People with Diabetes: The high starch content can cause spikes in blood sugar levels.
– Those with Renal Conditions: Rice water contains minerals that might prove challenging for those with compromised kidney function to process.
– Infants and Young Children: The immature digestive systems of young children might not handle rice water well, potentially leading to nutritional imbalances.
In conclusion, rice water can be a healthy addition to an adult’s diet when used appropriately and in moderation. Always listen to your body and consider any existing health conditions before starting new dietary practices.
Conclusion
In conclusion, drinking rice water may offer a potential supplementary approach for those trying to lose weight, along with various health benefits due to its nutritional content. It’s low in calories, can boost metabolism, and helps in maintaining a feeling of fullness. However, it should not be solely relied upon for weight loss. A balanced diet and regular exercise remain key components of a healthy lifestyle. As always, consult a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet.

I prefer to prepare dinner dinner, nonetheless typically answering the question of what’s for dinner may be anxious—notably all through the week, when deadlines and completely different commitments take priority. And as soon as I’m hungry on the end of the day and don’t have a dinner plan in place, that’s as soon as I’ll raid the fridge for random parts in hopes of throwing one factor collectively shortly, or order takeout. While I’m not a meal prepper, you'll be able to see me batch-cooking enormous pots of soup or casseroles on Sundays (when I've the time and space to learn from the strategy of cooking) and reheating the leftovers on the following days. When we’ve run out of leftovers, my husband and I make sooner, a lot easier meals, like our go-to Friday night time time meal: black beans and rice. I wasn’t on a regular basis an enormous fan of beans, nonetheless I started consuming them generally all through the pandemic since they're low price and shelf-stable. I similar to the consolation of canned beans, which require no prep work other than reheating them. Our beans and rice dish came about by merely throwing our favorite parts proper right into a bowl with some black beans: steamed white rice, sautéed kale, sliced avocado, chopped onion and a squeeze of lime juice. To make it, I start by rinsing some white rice and popping it proper right into a rice cooker. The the rest of the meal comes collectively pretty shortly, so I’ll usually put the rice on about an hour sooner than we have to eat so that it’s cooked and in a position to go. My rice cooker takes 45 minutes to make white rice, and if we have to eat our meal as shortly as a result of the rice is accomplished cooking, I start prepping the alternative parts when there are quarter-hour left on the timer. I chop an onion, slice up an avocado and cut back a lime in half. Next, I dump a can of black beans, liquid and all, in a saucepan, add lots of the chopped onion (I prefer to order a bit for topping the bowls) and warmth it over medium heat. When the liquid throughout the beans begins effervescent, I flip the heat all the way in which all the way down to low, giving it a mix to verify the onions soften. I don’t rinse the beans on account of I just like the flavour the liquid gives to the dish, nonetheless I do drain them barely when assembling the dish by tilting the serving spoon full of beans alongside the side of the saucepan. If you’re watching your sodium consumption, you can purchase no-salt-added canned beans and/or rinse and drain them. Then on one different burner, I sauté some kale with olive oil and Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning in a frying pan. We really like kale, so I’ll usually sauté two pans value so there’s enough to get pleasure from with any leftovers. To serve, I seize my favorite handmade ceramic pasta bowls and assemble the dish. I spoon some rice into each bowl, then excessive it with the warmed black beans and onions. The sauteéd kale and avocado slices are positioned throughout the beans and rice, and I finish with a sprinkle of raw chopped onion and a squeeze of lime juice. And that’s it! It’s a simple, tasty, budget-friendly dish. There are so many swaps chances are you'll make to suit your preferences or deplete regardless of is in your pantry and fridge. You can swap the white rice with brown rice or a wild rice mix, change the type of beans, veggies and seasonings, or excessive it collectively together with your favorite scorching sauce. I choose to throw an over-easy egg on excessive of leftovers the following day. I like that this complete dish comes collectively in about 45 minutes (a lot much less once you use leftover or precooked rice), and the first parts are pantry staples we practically on a regular basis have available. As far as vitamin goes, this black bean and rice bowl is full of anti-inflammatory parts like avocado and kale. The black beans provide filling fiber, and once you substitute the white rice with brown rice, you probably can enhance the fiber way more. This meal may be good in your gut, due to the resistant starch in black beans and prebiotics in onions. As a whole, it’s a well-rounded dish with carbs, healthful fat and protein. Having go-to meals like this rice and beans bowl takes the pressure off of dinner planning—notably if you happen to protect your kitchen stocked with most (if not all) of the weather you need. If you’re planning on making this dish at residence, I’d recommend procuring spherical for an avocado just some days beforehand or using thought of considered one of these ripening strategies to ensure you have a splendidly ripe avocado by dinnertime. Having a healthful dinner doesn’t require a complicated recipe or hours throughout the kitchen; it might be as simple as putting your favorite nutritious parts proper right into a bowl and digging in. I hope this “recipe” conjures up you to assemble your private quick, healthful and delicious dinners at residence.

You can begin by eating slowly and enjoying each bite. It is important to pay attention to the flavors, textures and smells of the food. Distractions like watching television or using smartphones can lead to mindless overeating. Practicing mindfulness can also help you tune in to your body's hunger and fullness cues, allowing you to eat intuitively and avoid overeating or undereating.
3.    Incorporating Anti-Inflammatory Foods:
Many chronic illnesses are linked to the inflammation in the body. It can exacerbate symptoms and contribute to disease progression. Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods into your diet can help reduce inflammation and support overall health.
Some examples of anti-inflammatory foods include fatty fish like salmon and sardines, leafy greens like spinach and kale, berries, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. These foods are rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.
It is also important to control food contributing to inflammation, like processed meats, refined carbohydrates, and sugary snacks and beverages.
4.    Personalized Nutrition Plans:
It is important to understand that every person is unique with a different internal mechanism. Personalized nutrition plans are essential to help you become healthier and reach your goal. You can also work with a healthcare professional, such as a registered dietitian, to develop a nutrition plan that is tailored to your specific health needs, goals, and preferences.
They can help you identify foods that may exacerbate your symptoms and recommend alternatives that can support your overall well-being. By working on these four strategies, you can take control of your health and better manage your chronic illness through the power of nutrition. Remember, small changes can make a big difference, so start where you are and gradually build upon your progress.

How Suitable is Raw Fish For Dogs?
Have you noticed your pooch go stir-crazy at the smell of fish? Have you been tempted to give them a taste but stop yourself because you’re sure how suitable is raw fish for dogs? Well, what you’re faced with is a common dilemma that many pet parents contend with. The short answer is no. Raw fish consumption exposes your dog to parasite risks that can lead to serious health complications. Many dogs may even experience an allergic reaction after consuming uncooked fish. On the other hand, the nutritional value of fish cannot be overlooked.
After all, the high concentration of protein and essential nutrients in fish surely makes it a good contender for a spot in your dog’s food bowl. This is also why it is a common ingredient in ready-to-eat dog food. So, the question you should be asking is: how much and in what form is fresh fish good for dogs? Let’s find out.
Is Fresh Fish Good For Dogs?
If you lean in favor of feeding home-cooked food to your dog, fresh fish is not only good but can also be considered an essential ingredient for a balanced diet. Fresh fish for dogs offers many nutritional benefits, such as:
The Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can contribute to improved coat and skin health and also have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body
Fish are also rich in Vitamin D – a micronutrient rarely found in foods – which can facilitate the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, resulting in better bone and joint health
Zinc, Vitamins B6, B12, and B13, iron, and iodine keep the nervous system healthy, improve immunity and cardiovascular health
These health benefits make it clear as day that fresh fish for dogs is a great dietary choice. That being said, not all fish types are suitable for your canine companion. In fact, some parasite risks, high mercury content, and risk of poisoning make some varieties of fish absolutely unfit for your pooch’s consumption. That’s why, if you’re considering introducing fresh fish to your dog’s diet, it’s crucial to carefully choose variety and source, and understand what’s the best way to incorporate it in your pet’s diet.
What types of fish can dogs eat?
As I said, not all fish varieties are safe for your dog’s consumption. Fish with a larger lifespan, like mackerel, swordfish, shark, and tuna, tend to have a high toxin content such as heavy metals and mercury, which can make your pet extremely sick. Likewise, if the fish you’re feeding your dog hasn’t been sourced and stored correctly, it can expose your dog to parasites that can cause health complications. Not to mention, if it doesn’t sit right with your pooch, fish can also cause a severe case of food poisoning.
Tumblr media
1. Salmon
Nutrient-dense Salmon can be a great addition to your pet’s meal. The omega-3 fatty acids in Salmon work wonders in promoting a shiny coat and good skin health. Its nutritional profile also helps in reducing inflammation and strengthening the immune system. But can dogs eat raw salmon? The answer is no. It not only increases parasite risk but can also put your pet at risk of salmon poisoning, which can prove fatal.
2. Herring
Herring, which is typically found in shallow, temperate waters, is another choice if you’re looking for fresh fish for dogs. It is a great source of vitamin D. Feeding your pooch Herring once a week can help improve teeth, bone, and joint health. For dogs who are allergic to poultry meats, Herring can make a great substitute, as it is cheaper than other fish proteins.
3. Cod
If you’re looking for the best raw fish for dogs, add Cod to the list. Except, it shouldn’t be fed to your dog raw. Being a small fish, it is known to have a low mercury count and fewer toxins. This, along with its nutrient-rich profile, is one of the best fish for dogs’ diet. Even so, it’s crucial to prep it the right way before feeding it to your pet.
4. Flounder
Packed with lean protein, vitamin B, and omega-3s, Flounder is another great addition to your pet’s meal. If you can’t source it fresh, it’s perfectly okay to use the frozen variety. However, this frozen white fish for dogs must be duly poached or steamed before it makes its way to their food bowl.
5. Catfish
Cost-effective and nutrient-rich, the Catfish can make a great addition to your dog’s diet. Its nutrient profile, which includes protein, omega-3s, thiamine, and phosphorus, contributes toward improved cardiovascular health. However, it is also high in fat content, so portion control is crucial.
6. Lake whitefish
A frontrunner for the best fish for dogs to eat, especially if you’re looking for leaner sources of protein to incorporate into your pet’s diet. Belonging to the salmon family, these, too, are extremely rich in protein. But if you’re wondering if you can serve it to your dog uncooked, the answer is the same as can dogs eat raw salmon – NO! Not only is it not a food choice for a raw diet, but it is also extremely important to debone the Lake whitefish before feeding it to your dog to prevent internal injuries, which can often prove fatal.
7. Sardines
Ah, sardines! A favorite among pet parents and dogs alike. These small fish are a great source of protein and also rich in calcium, selenium, coenzyme Q10, vitamin D, and B12, and are known to prevent certain types of cancer as well as gum diseases in dogs.
If you can source raw sardines, and serve them to your dog cooked and deboned, nothing like it. If not, canned variety works just as well. However, when using the canned variety, it’s best to avoid sardines in oils and use ones with water. Alternatively, you can also use frozen sardines for dogs’ meals.
Is Raw Fish Good for Dogs? 5 Hazards to be Mindful Of
Tumblr media
Can I feed my dog raw salmon? Is raw fish good for dogs? Can frozen sprats for dogs be used raw? What about frozen sardines for dogs? So many questions… So much information about what types of fish have high mercury content, which don’t, which are easy to digest, which are not, the nutrient profile of each… It can be hard to find a clear takeaway.
So, let me simplify it for you. The answer to all these questions is no. Using raw fish for dogs’ diet is never a good idea. Yes, freshly sourced fish can be a rich and healthy addition to your pooch’s diet, safe sourcing of raw fish and proper preparation techniques are both critical in ensuring that they contribute toward making your furry baby healthier and not put them at unwarranted health risks. And why is that? Let’s take a look at the top hazards of feeding raw fish to dogs:
1. Parasites
As I’ve already mentioned, among the risks and considerations of feeding raw fish, parasites are the front runner. All raw fish can have parasites, among which tapeworms, roundworms, and flukes are the most dangerous to dogs.
It is a variant of flukes found in salmon and other fish native to the Pacific Northwest region that causes Salmon poisoning – the symptoms of which can range from vomiting and diarrhea to swollen lymph nodes, dehydration, extreme weakness, and death if not treated in time. I hope you’re now clear on why the answer to, “Can I feed my dog raw salmon?”, will always be a resounding NO!
2. Bacteria
Whether it is raw sardines, cod, flounder, or frozen sprats for dogs served raw, all fish can carry potentially harmful bacteria such as listeria and salmonella. While not all dogs may become sick after exposure to these bacteria – in part due to their short digestive systems and in part, depending on how strong a dog’s immune system is – it is not worth the risk to try and find out how your pet will respond to being fed raw fish that carries harmful bacteria.
3. Bones in raw fish
The tiny bones in raw fish can not only prove to be a choking hazard for dogs but can also cause injury to the esophagus and stomach, sometimes causing the internal organs in the digestive tract to rupture – which, needless to say, can lead to serious health complications. While the gastric acids in a dog’s digestive system are equipped to soften bones, they may have trouble breaking down fish bones.
4. Presence of mercury
All fish contain some amount of mercury. The bacteria in water convert atmospheric mercury into organic mercury compounds, which get absorbed into fish’s tissue. Excessive mercury exposure can be toxic to dogs, leading to health complications such as:
Loss of body movements
Convulsions
Blindness
Tremors
Abnormal behavior
Risk of lead poisoning
Raw fish also contains other heavy metals such as lead, too much exposure to which can lead to serious consequences such as:
Anemia
Gastrointestinal disorders
Lethargy and anorexia
Neurological changes
The bottom line is, there is no such thing as the best raw fish for dogs. The American Veterinary Medical Association does not recommend raw fish for dogs (or even undercooked fish, for that matter) in any form or at any life stage.
My dog ate raw fish, what do I do?
Tumblr media
After learning of the potential risks of raw fish for dogs, it’s natural to worry about what would happen if your dog consumes it inadvertently. “My dog ate raw fish, what do I do?” is a common frantic query of pet parents. Well, first of all, breathe!
Unless your dog has ingested a large quantity of raw fish in a go under some circumstance – as a pet parent, I know the possibility is not far-fetched – it’s unlikely that a one-off incident will hurt their health (barring, of course, the risk of injury or choking due to fish bones). Even so, it helps to be vigilant. Here’s what you can do if your dog consumes raw fish:
Monitor your dog’s health for any symptoms or unusual changes in mannerisms/behavior
If you notice something out of the ordinary, consult your veterinarian
Get all the tests your vet recommends
Follow through the entire course of treatment
The Right Way To Prep And Cook Fish For Dogs
You may have noticed that I’ve been talking a lot about prepping fish the right way before feeding it to your dog. But what is the right way? Let’s find out:
Safe handling of raw fish is paramount. This is equally important whether you’re using frozen fish or freshly sourced. You can follow the FDA guidelines for proper storage of raw fish for humans
Cook, poach, or steam the fish until you reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. If the entire batch is not used immediately, it’s important to store the leftovers correctly
Freshly sourced fish should be consumed within two days, so decide the quantity to buy accordingly
Some of the acceptable ways of cooking fish are boiling, roasting, grilling, poaching, steaming, braising, air frying
If left unconsumed at room temperature for over two hours, the portion must be discarded
When introducing fish to your dog’s diet, monitor your dog for any symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort such as refusing to eat, diarrhea, vomiting
Making informed decisions about your dog’s diet is a crucial aspect of ensuring their well-being and good health. I hope this article offered you relevant insights about whether or not fish would be right for your pooch’s diet, and if so, how to incorporate it for optimal benefits. As with any new food item, start with small portions and build up gradually. And don’t overlook the importance of moderation in feeding fish to your dog. Overdoing it can do more harm than good.
