DeVore Fidelity O/Reference Speakers Now On Demo as Part of our New Flagship System!

Hi Everyone,

It was a big day last Friday as we finally got to unpack and setup our new 4 box DeVore Fidelity O/Reference speakers as part of our new Highend Room setup which basically meant spinning the room round so we now run our sources and preamp at the rear of the room to give centre stage to the speakers and amps, this is something I have wanted to do for a while so it is a great job done, there is still plenty of work to do sorting out all the cabling and I really need to get a turntable in the system asap but even straight out the box it is all sounding so good that I just wanted to share some pictures on the system.

For anyone who knows me they will know that I have become a big fan of DeVore Fidelity's range of speakers so I took the plunge at the beginning of last year to order a pair of their Reference speakers, these are priced around £120,000 so it was certainly a big decision, then began the journey of putting a system together to really show them off which I feel we have really achieved with some of the best equipment on sale in the world today and I have to say even straight out the box it is sounding incredible.

It's no lie that on first listening it actually bought me to tears, really wasn't expecting that and I wasn't thinking about how much it all cost, honest, it was due to the pure emotion this system can convey, it is totally engaging and lifelike, it just makes you want to listen to all your favourite music again as it is like you are hearing it for the 1st time, it really is everything I was hoping it would be, and more to be honest, now I just want anyone who loves music to come in for a listen anytime as the room will be setup like it is now for many years to come to be enjoyed by all our customers, it's going to be a struggle to home in the evenings to be honest.

Erect-crested penguin It turns out that sympathetic yawning is a cross-species phenomenon. I’ve noticed it with dogs, and now also penguins and albatrosses. They yawn, I yawn. It doesn’t seem to work the other way around, but I guess I do lack a beak to make it obvious to them that I’m yawning.

Anne Herbauts - parce que parce que parce que. Marion Canevascini - Notre frère

Dans un article de fond publié il y a presque dix ans et enrichi entre temps de nouveaux livres, il était question d'enfants porteurs d'un handicap mental. Anne Herbauts et Marion Canevascini en parlent également, du point de vue de la fratrie.

On ne sait pas grand chose de la famille qui vit ici. Elle est suggérée par quelques objets, une tasse sur la table, des autocollants sur la fenêtre. C’est un chat qui nous mène, page après page, au gré de ses déambulations, même si parfois il s’en absente. De la maison au jardin; du jardin où poussent des herbes folles et des ronces à la maison, la narratrice, en voix off, utilise le même procédé que le chat pour raconter sa soeur.

Des herbes folles, apprend-on, il en pousse justement dans sa tête. Et pas que. Il y a aussi « des branches en colère, un jardin en pente, très en pente ». Ainsi va le livre. Le lecteur ignore qui, du chat, de la narratrice, des illustrations, mène la danse. Les pages défilent, réchauffées par un jaune lumineux, entrecoupé de végétation, de chaises de jardin en plastique blanc, comme abandonnées, d’un treillis dont les mailles se défont.

Dans les livres d’Anne Herbauts, la poésie jaillit de toutes parts, aussi bien du texte que du dessin. Elle prend des libertés dans les mots et les phrases; et dans son dessin, libre lui aussi de migrer d’un lieu à l’autre, elle passe d’un plan serré à un plan large, d’une double page presque vide et à une autre pleine. Dans cet album en particulier, les séquences se suivent qu’on pourrait presque déplacer. C’est à se demander si Anne n’est pas un peu chat.

Comment expliquer le handicap mental ? « parce que parce que parce que », il n’y a pas à raisonner, rien à expliquer, mais juste à accepter, comme le fait la narratrice, les hauts et les bas, la force et la faiblesse, tout ce qu’on ne comprend pas.

Marion vit dans une une famille « normale », avec son père, sa mère, son grand frère et sa petite soeur. Quand le frère se met à dire des choses étranges, les parents expliquent qu’il est malade, qu’il ne guérira pas complètement, mais que les médicaments l’aideront.

Ce n’est pas contagieux et il ne faut pas avoir peur. Les fillettes sont témoins de ses hallucinations. A l’âge de dix-sept ans, un diagnostic est posé: la schizophrénie. Les soeurs se rapprochent de plus en plus, le frère s’isole. Leur enfance se déroule entre tristesse et moments heureux.

Le jour où elles sont envoyées seules en vacances, la maladie s’éloigne et elles se sentent enfin grandes car malgré tout, c’est le frère qui a toujours été le grand. Quand il quitte la maison pour s’installer ailleurs, elles peuvent commencer à vivre leur propre vie dans une famille comme les autres et atteindre, elles aussi, l’âge de dix-sept ans.

Marion Canevascini a puisé dans ses souvenirs et ceux de sa soeur pour tenter de restituer leurs sensations et faire un bilan de leur enfance… à hauteur d’enfants. Elle relate également les tentatives des parents pour protéger leurs filles en les laissant le plus possible en dehors de leurs soucis. Elle cherche et trie afin de faire ressortir des bribes d’enfance normale, mais ce n’est vraiment qu’au départ du grand frère qu’elles peuvent se mettre à exister, riches du lien exceptionnel qui les unit.

Après avoir relu ce court roman graphique paru en 2020, mon esprit a glissé vers les deux autres livres de Marion Canevascini, Sables mouvants (2022) et Masterkrep (2023). Il m’a semblé que ce travail sur l’enfance, à l’origine de Notre frère, a offert à l’auteure des clés qui lui ont permis de poursuivre sa voie. Sa sensibilité l’amène à s’exprimer dans des récits intimes et sincères qui conservent une forme de légèreté, parce que simples, à fleur de mots et de descriptions.

On Boxing Day 1973 Lindsay May stepped aboard Onya of Gosford to compete in his first Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. A bright-eyed 24-year-old, he had no idea what he was getting himself into.

Fifty years on, he is still bright-eyed and eager as he approaches his 50th consecutive race where he will sail with Antipodes. May will be the first person to reach the milestone.

“In ’73, my first race, I never thought I’d get to 50, and I had no idea what I was in for. I’d done very little racing, it was my first [race] really offshore,” May said.

“It’s just one of those things, you get on and if you do a good job, people to say to you ‘do you want to come along next year?’, and that’s just what’s happened year after year.”

In the 49 races he has done so far, the 74-year-old has seen it all. He won the race three times, first in 1984 with Indian Pacific, again in 1991 with Atara, and most recently in 2006 with Love and War.

He was part of the 1998 race, the deadliest in the event’s history, when five yachts sank, six people died and just 44 of 115 yachts finished the race. May, aboard Brindabella, was one of them.
