The door jingled as three figures huddled through the store together,
“It’s so cold!” One of them — Jeongin, exclaimed, bringing your attention to them from your organising,
“Lucky it’s warm in here. Hey, guys!” You waved as they approached, looking at the display of records and CDs behind you.
“Y/N!” Jisung approached you first, pulling you in for your signature handshake.
The taller boy, Seungmin, scoffed, looking down on the two of you,
“I can’t believe the two of you still do that elaborate greeting.”
“You’re just salty that you haven’t been friends with someone since childhood and had the awesomeness to come up with something like this.” Jisung defended.
Bitterness bubbled in your stomach,
Right. Friends.
The two of you had established your friendship way back in daycare when you lent Jisung your crayons... reluctantly, at that. But you were kind of desperate to make friends, so you accepted his request. What you had underestimated though, were his motives. Jisung had no intention on actually giving your crayons back. Long story short, hair was pulled, paper was thrown, including scissors at one point, all resulting in Jisung eating your crayons so that you would never get them back. You had never been more shocked in your entire life... well you were two-years-old, so there wasn’t much that you had experienced. However, your parents, after hearing of this fight, insisted on taking you to visit Jisung in the hospital (he had just digested crayons, it’d be concerning if he didn’t at least get it checked out), giving him a CD of your favourite songs for him to listen to. How a two-year-old was supposed to appreciate that was beyond you, but when he came back to daycare with a set of colour pencils and drew pictures beside you, the two of you were inseparable since.
However, once you had gotten into university, the two of you had exchanged more than friendly comments, making you reconsider his place as your best friend after all. I mean, did he make your heart flutter? Yes. Did you miss him whenever he wasn’t around, even when he was being a pain? Yes. Was he incredibly talented, handsome and amazing that you couldn’t help but fall for him?... Yes! You had been trying to figure out ways to hint to him what you really thought of him, but he was about as clueless as Cher in the movie Clueless. And seeing as New Years was round the corner, you had resolved to yourself that you’d confess to him as one of your New Years resolutions... It was now just a question of how...
As Jisung pulled you in for the final part - a hug, you inhaled his familiar scent, interrupting your internal monologue, your mind calming from its racing, seconds before.
“How may I help you guys today?” You brushed your clothes, trying to maintain an air of professionalism.
“Jisung dragged us all the way here to get some of your famous ramen.” Jeongin explained, sighing.
“You came all the way to a music store... to try my ramen?” You asked confusedly.
“I don’t understand the logic behind it as well. But we did come all this way, in the snow as well.” Seungmin looked at you pointedly.
“...okay. Wait here, I’ll make it.”
“Oh my god, I love you Y/N,” Jisung called out as you went to the staff room, your heart skipping a beat at his comment.
Sighing, you turned on the kettle,
Why is he like this? How does crayon eating boy have this much power over me?
Tumblr media
“Be careful, it’s hot!” You passed the steaming bowls of ramen and chopsticks to each of the boys, as the four of you sat around the till.
Bowl dangerously balanced on his elevated leg as he tried to pull apart the wooden chopsticks, Jisung flashed you a grateful smile,
“You know, Y/N, one day you’re going to make someone extremely happy with—“ He yelped as he jolted from the force of taking the wooden chopsticks apart, the bowl tipping off his leg and onto the carpeted floor. The red ramen soup soaking into the light carpet, staining it.
“Oh no! Y/N, I’m so sorry!” Jisung exclaimed, frantically grabbing at tissues from the counter, dabbing them on the ground.
You bit back a smile,
Of course, it was Jisung. But ugh it’s going to be a pain to get that dry cleaned...
“I might just have to sue you for that!” You said sarcastically.
Jisung looked at you wide-eyed,
“Oh! I— isn’t there anything else I can do? I can help out at the store for the rest of the break!” Jisung said frantically.
“Ohhh, no I’ll have to have sue you. Company policy.” You hid a smile, deciding to tease him further.
“Oh. Um, okay.” He blinked, unaware, “Let me just get a lawyer to represent me— Seungmin! You’re a lawyer, right? You need to represent me for this case.” Jisung grabbed Seungmin’s arm, looking at him pleadingly,
“I’ve literally only had one class and isn’t this a jo—“ Seungmin broke off as you stared him down, imploring him to partake in the practical joke you were playing on the other boy.
You sighed, “Okay. Seems like it’s sorted. We’ll meet up in two weeks. Hopefully, you’ll have your money ready, because I’m going to win this.”
“It’s Opposite Day. So you won’t, and I will, okay?” Jisung gave you a quick smile, dragging Seungmin towards the door.
“But, my ramen!” Seungmin complained.
“No time, we need to win.” Jisung dragged Seungmin out of the store.
You shared a glance with Jeongin,
This is going to be interesting...
Tumblr media
“You aren’t a parent, nor a teacher, what are you doing here?” Jeongin warily watched you approach, narrowly avoiding the little kids running through your path.
“I need your help.” You said solemnly.
“How did you know I was doing work experience at the daycare?” Jeongin raised an eyebrow sceptically.
“Believe it or not, Seungmin can be extremely candid and direct when Jisung is harassing him on the other side of a phone call. Also, you’re working towards your teaching degree. It doesn’t seem too weird that you’re working at a daycare.” You noted, taking in your surroundings.
“Oh, alright. What can I help you with?” Jeongin said reluctantly.
“I need you to dress up like an old businessman and pretend to be my lawyer.” You said quickly, thrusting a back-rubbing cane into his hands before getting ready to bolt.
“Wait! Why?” Jeongin looked at you sceptically yet again.
You sighed,
“Look, I need Jisung to think it’s the real deal, otherwise...” You stopped, squinting at the two figures attempting to act casual outside the daycare.
“Oh my god, are they spying on us?”
“It was most definitely Jisung’s idea.” Jeongin joined you, staring as Jisung attempted to casually lean against a car, trying to converse with a stony-faced Seungmin, not long before setting off the car alarm and yelling at Seungmin to run.
You watched the two of them take off,
“Looks like we’ll need to up our game, Mr Yang. Or should I say... Prosecutor Yang?” You smiled pleadingly at him.
“Fine...”
Tumblr media
“Let me get this straight, we’re spying on them now even though this whole lawsuit thing isn’t actually going to happen?” Jeongin asked, bringing his jacket closer to him as he entered the University café.
“Well, it’s not like we can’t put any effort in because then we’d be admitting defeat to this... joke? Regardless, we need to win.” You pushed your cap further down after nodding at Chan in acknowledgment.
You sat down in a secluded area of the café, Chan approaching to greet you,
“Why is it always that chaos is brought to this café by this friendship group?” Chan looked pointedly at Jeongin as he shrugged.
“How do you know that shenanigans are to take place? Can’t we just enjoy our coffee in a secluded area of the cafe in our spy clothes without suspicion?” You asked, slightly defensive.
“...no. Anyway, what can I get for your spy mission?” Chan asked, eyes glinting with amusement.
“I’ll have an iced americano.” Jeongin.
“And I’ll have a—“ you broke off as Chan interrupted you,
“New York Cheesecake? I know. Jisung and you come here to get some like every Friday. Speaking of Jisung, why are you sitting over here instead of with them over there?” He pointed to the two boys huddled at the table, Seungmin slightly bored, checking his phone regularly, and Jisung talking animatedly to him. Jisung, noticing Seungmin’s disinterest, grabbed his phone, getting up and placing it in the trash can before heading back to a very much annoyed Seungmin.
“It’s... a long story. Very chaotic! You probably wouldn’t want to hear it.” You ushered Chan away, Jeongin looked at you smugly,
“You and Jisung, huh? It’s almost as if you were... soulmates. Now I think I know why you need my help.”
You scoffed,
“I don’t need your help.”
“Oh really? Then I guess I’ll get going—“ You pulled him back into his seat, the chair scraping as it was pulled erratically from both directions. The commotion caused Jisung and Seungmin to pause, looking at you two, eyes widening in recognition.
You looked at Jeongin, panicked, before throwing the money at a stunned Chan and rushing out of the cafe.
“Don’t give my cheesecake to Jisung! We both know that he’ll eat it instead of giving it to me.”
Tumblr media
[09:38] (Jeongin) Hey, make sure you come on time.
[09:40] (You) Why do we have to go to the shops for this?
[09:41] (Jeongin) sadly the courts were all booked out with proper criminal cases, so the shops will have to do to resolve this fake lawsuit. just get ready and come quickly!
[09:43] (You) fine, fine. I’ll get my finest attire on. See you soon.
You placed your phone on your bed before dressing up to the best of your ability, steeling yourself as you looked in the mirror,
I will tell him how I feel... no matter how complicated this lawsuit thing becomes.
Tumblr media
“Look who finally decided to show.” Jisung drawled, sipping at his soft drink. You looked him up and down appraisingly, ignoring your beating heart... he cleaned up more than nicely.
“Okay, shall we get started?” You clapped your hands, sitting opposite Seungmin and Jisung... and next to a very poorly disguised Jeongin.
“Interesting outfit choice, Jeongin.” Seungmin noted.
“What’s even more interesting is that Y/N selected Jeongin as her representative. He’s not even a lawyer!” Jisung looked at you triumphantly.
“Neither am—“ Seungmin interrupted, Jisung shushing him before he could complete his sentence.
“I thought you were going to dress up like a business man! Not some young mobster. This isn’t a fanfic. You’re not the main character.” You hissed under your breath, leaning slightly towards Jeongin so he could hear.
“And what? You are?” He scoffed, before smiling widely at the two in front of him.
“Right, so Jeongin and I have discussed the case beforehand.” Seungmin nodded at Jeongin.
“We’ve decided that we’ll put together a bunch of trials, and whoever wins those will win this lawsuit.” Seungmin proposed.
“I... feel like this isn’t how lawsuits work.” Jisung said doubtfully.
“This is what I was taught in law school!” Seungmin defended.
“Gotta trust the guy who attended law school.” You pointed out.
“What do you mean attended? He’s still at law—“ Jisung broke off as Seungmin cleared his throat, pointedly.
“The first challenge being, who can make the two of us the best milkshake.”
“Ready to lose, Y/N?” Jisung raised an eyebrow competitively at you.
“You wish, Han Jisung!” You sprinted to the other side of the food court, lining up as Jisung hurried after you, ending up directly behind you.
Tumblr media
[20 minutes later]
You sighed loudly,
This is taking too long.
You politely pushed in front of people to the front of the line,
“Hey, are you guys right or do you need help? Because I can help out if you want. It’ll help you get through this queue a lot faster.” You asked the worker at the register.
“I can too!” Jisung sidled up beside you as you narrowed your eyes at him.
The worker looked at you sceptically before sighing in defeat,
“You know what, you may as well help because we’re so swamped. Grab some gloves and a hairnet and get started.” The worker let you through.
That was easy enough.
Tumblr media
This is not easy.
“Chocolate ice cream thick shake for Sara!” You called out, frantically pushing the lid on the shake before handing it to the customer. Jisung rushed beside you,
“No-fat, non-skim, skinny latte with soy milk, one and a half sugars and a drizzle of vanilla for Jacques?” Jisung called out,
“Actually, can I change my—“ Jacques started.
“No.” Jisung deadpanned.
“Ready to admit defeat?” You smirked.
“Never. We’re yet to make the best milkshakes for Seungmin and Jeongin.” Jisung ran to the blender, chucking in as many ingredients as possible.
“Two can play at that game.” You said resolutely, approaching another blender, using as many ingredients as possible.
This is either going to be a disaster or a five star Michelin dish in the making.
Tumblr media
“Stop. Stealing. The. Caramel. Sauce.” You gave Jisung a death glare as you wrestled the sauce bottle, the manager of the store glaring at the both of you,
“Alright, that’s enough. The two of you need to leave. You basically ditched serving the customers and did this. I don’t even know what this is but you need to stop using our resources for it.”
“Wait but it’s the finishing touch!” Jisung pleaded as the manager shook his head resolutely.
You scoffed,
“Whatever. It’s not like we’re getting paid for this or anything. Which we should! In fact, I have a lawyer friend that could help me sue you. He’s very good and wins about... 100% of his clients’ cases.” You threatened.
The manager pinched the bridge of his nose,
“Half of the orders that you served came back with complaints so you really did nothing.”
“The people really don’t appreciate our talents.” Jisung gasped, offended.
“If you guys think you’re talents are in milkshake making, you really should reevaluate your...um...life choices.” The manager said sheepishly.
“Whatever, be prepared for a lawsuit! Let’s leave, Jisung.” You grabbed your milkshakes, grabbing Jisung’s arm and dragging him out of the store.
“100% track rate, you say? Have you admitted defeat already?” Jisung raised an eyebrow.
“Oh, shut up, Jisung. I was obviously talking about Jeongin.”
“Right...”
Tumblr media
“Um. What is this?” Seungmin scrunched his face in disgust, looking at the... mess of two drinks in front of him and Jeongin.
“Milkshakes!” Jisung said excitedly.
“I know that. But why did it take so long to make... you didn’t poison it, did you?” Seungmin looked at the two of you skeptically.
“Just drink it and tell us who wins.” You sighed as they picked up their drinks, tentatively sipping and then tasting the other,
“We need time to confer, so we’re going to give you the next challenge. You’re going to have to... pick out the best present for each other, and we’ll judge that once we see it.” Jeongin shooed the two of you away, winking at you as Jisung took the lead, striding towards a craft store.
Tumblr media
As you browsed around the store, closely following Jisung, you stopped at the crayons section, exhaling a small laugh.
Jisung turned around, confused, eyes wide, settling on the packet of crayons,
“I dibs getting that for you.”
“You can’t dibs getting a present for someone.” You said incredulously.
“Um, well if it’s a competition, yes I can.” Jisung retorted, hands on hips.
“So you’re telling me, that the best present you could ever get me is crayons? You wouldn’t get that for me normally?” You rolled your eyes, exasperated.
“Why should I?” Jisung said, confused.
“Let me remind you. Twenty or so years ago, a young Jisung eats my crayons in retaliation for getting told to give them back. Young Y/N visits young Jisung in hospital, giving him a free record as a gift. And Jisung never reimburses Y/N with another set of crayons. You know, with your track record, it’s not even accidental. It’s serial. Like serial killing but serial property damage. Honestly, I could extend that to this lawsuit, as well.” You defended.
“Okay one, it’s too late to do that... isn’t it? I don’t have enough money for both! And two, is all you’re saying that your ideal gift is a pack of crayons?!”
“Are you admitting defeat already?” You smirked.
“Pfft no! Give me— that—“ He grabbed the pack of crayons from you, heading to the counter to pay as you grabbed another pack, lining up behind him.
Tumblr media
“You both bought each other the same gift?” Seungmin raised an eyebrow at the two of you.
“Not intentionally! Please don’t disqualify us.” Jisung defended, apologetic.
“You literally went to the same store.” Jeongin deadpanned.
“That’s—“
“Whatever, I don’t have time for this. I need to go to the hospital in a bit. Okay, here’s what you can do. Explain to us why you bought the gift for said person, and we’ll judge based on your response.” Seungmin checked his watch, leaning back in his chair.
“Jisung, you go first.” Jeongin gestured for Jisung to start.
“Okay, well the short story is that Y/N told me that it was their ideal gift. The long story is that Y/N called me a serial property damager, and I really can’t afford that being added to my list of offences and be sued further.” Jisung said a matter-of-factly.
“Oookay... anyway, Y/N! What’s your reasoning?” Seungmin turned to you.
“Hmm... okay well when I was a child, Jisung stole my crayons and ate them, somehow we became friends, and he never bought me crayons to reimburse me, so I decided to be the bigger person and buy him crayons to share. Honestly, you’d think he’d know how to by now.” You tutted as a soft pink colouring flooded Jisung’s cheeks.
“...what?” Jeongin blurted out.
“It doesn’t matter! Jisung and Y/N are both... odd personalities. I mean, no wonder they’re best friends.” Seungmin dismissed.
There was that “f” word again...
“Anyway, I don’t have time for this. We’ll deliberate again as you do another challenge. You’re going to have to race each other around the entire shopping centre. Whoever comes first, wins... that round. Obviously. Otherwise, there would’ve been no point to these other challenges.” Seungmin dismissed the two of you, getting you to start at the same time.
Is this what my life has come to? Racing the literal love of my life to show that I’m serious about a fake lawsuit?... I really need to reconsider my lifestyle choices... and friends.
Tumblr media
You and Jisung were neck and neck, you huffed as you sprinted next to him,
“Why are you so caught up on this whole lawsuit thing? You and I both know that it’s fake.”
Jisung glanced at you through the corner of his eye, “Hff— I— hff— know that but fake lawsuit or not, it was one of my New Years resolutions to win it.”
You stopped,
“You can’t be serious.”
“Dead serious.” He stopped in front of you.
“Well— I... who am I to stop you from achieving your goals? I forfeit.” You stepped back, relieved to be out of it.
“You can’t be serious,” Jisung said, slightly shocked,
“I need you to finish this! I can’t just win by default. That defeats the whole purpose. Actually try.” He challenged.
“This is so stupid, though.” You grumbled.
“You’re the one that proposed it. Why did you, if you don’t want to do it?” Jisung raised an eyebrow expectantly.
“I— ugh. To be honest, it started out as a joke but then I saw how serious you got about it! So, I decided to play along so I wouldn’t let you down.” You sighed.
“You’re right, I paid Seungmin $100 to represent me.” He sighed in sync with you.
“...you really need to stop doing that. First Minho, now Seungmin? Are you going to pay the entirety of your friendship group for being your friend?” You looked at him disappointedly.
He rolled his eyes, “Speaking of friends... why did you play along?” He asked, curious.
You inhaled sharply,
Now or never. No more friend-zoning.
“Do you know what my New Years resolution was?” You asked.
He shook his head, clueless,
“It was to confess my feelings for you. I’m not as great with words as you are, but Han Jisung, I like you. A lot. Even if you do crazy things like eating my crayons.” You closed your eyes, unwilling to view his reaction... only for a slight pressure to meet your lips.
Your eyes fluttered open, only to meet Jisung’s as he kissed you softly.
He pulled back, bringing you into a hug,
“You’re always going to hold that against me, aren’t you?” He chuckled, whispering that to you.
“We just kissed and that’s what you’re concerned about?” You lightly smacked his chest.
“Well, what else am I supposed to say? I kissed you. I don’t think that best friends do that. Do I need to say it explicitly? Okay then, I like you too!” He said, confused.
You rolled your eyes,
“Whatever. We better get going if we want to finish this race, and help you achieve your life goals!”
“Oh my gosh, Y/N. You’re such a supportive... lover? We’ll figure it out.” He held out your hand, dodging past people as you both sprinted down the mall.
You slowed as you approached Seungmin and Jeongin, dropping your hand from his grasp. Jisung turned back to you, confused.
You ushered him forward, smiling encouragingly,
“Go! Finish first. Achieve your goals.”
He paused, before taking your hand again, dragging you over to Seungmin and Jeongin, they looked up, equally as confused as you.
“We both forfeit.” He said, in between catching his breath.
“What? Why?” Jeongin started, as Seungmin groaned,
“You’re telling me, that I spent the time that I could’ve been sleeping, only for you to forfeit. You know what? It’s fine. Neither of you won anyway because drinking your milkshakes was the worst thing we had to suffer through since the time you both made us cake!”
You reeled back in mock offence, Seungmin sighed,
“I’m sorry if that was harsh. I’m working nights at the hospital.”
“Wait. What does a lawyer have to do at a hospital?” Jisung questioned, confused.
“Do— do you guys even listen to the things I say? I quit law school after one lesson and went back to medical school.” Seungmin said, exasperated.
“And no! You can’t have your money back. We’re leaving now anyway, so bye!” He grabbed Jeongin, running away from the two of you as fast as possible.
“You know, I lied about my New Years resolution.” Jisung spun you around to face him, your hand meeting his bicep.
“Oh no! How could I ever trust you again?” You sighed dramatically.
“Y/N— I was trying to be sentimental and tell you that our resolutions were the same but you ruined the moment!” He pouted, annoyed.
You laughed, grabbing his cheeks (jeekies ahhhhhhhhh they’re so cute right—),
“I’ll sue you if you don’t stop being so cute!”
“Ha! I’d like to see you try.”

No one knew how to react. It’s hard to dictate what to do when you stumble upon a slumbering super soldier when you were sneaking into the Avenger’s Tower because your healer’s down. The teens looked between each other before Jo made eye contact with Tanner. He nodded and got Andy from Rowland’s arms, the speedster going to get him to the medical bay while the three left tried to think over their best options.
“Something seems off about this.” Peter whispered and the two nodded.
“Friday, how long has he been here?” Rowland asked the AI softly, noticing that Steve wasn’t waking.
“Nearly two hours sir, the others left the tower and I’ve been unable to contact them.” She explained and Jo moved closer. She placed a hand on his cheek, frowning deeply.
“He’s burning up. What’s his temperature Friday?” She questioned as a rag floated from one side of the kitchen to the other, it soaked in cool water from her magic.
“104.7.” Jo’s eyes widened.
“Rowland, we need to get him to the infirmary now, and Peter?” The boy jumped at the sound of his own name. “Call Stark, Strange, Banner, whoever you can and tell them that we need someone else down here to help.” Peter nodded, taking out his phone while the other two started to lug the mass of Steve Rogers down the hall. “Who needs weight lifting when you have a sick super soldier?” She joked and Rowland rolled his eyes.
“I’d rather lift a car or two.” She pouted as they made it to the door, Tanner outside it arguing with Friday.
“We’ve been with the team for nearly three months; what do you mean we don’t have clearance to get in here?!” Tanner looked pissed and distressed, Andy getting more pale as the seconds ticked on. The man had taken a few shots during the emergency mission the five went on on their way home from a trip Peter went on with school, it now looking much worse. The injuries he tried to hide during battle were biting back.
“I’m sorry sir, none of your names have a high enough access code to allow you in. Mr. Happy recently enforced this new coding system.” Jo looked up, anger in her eyes.
“So, out of us four who are awake, none of us can get in to get medical help that we need?” The AI buzzed in approval of her words. “Well, at least it makes sense now why I had to teleport us in.” Jo shook her head, looking over the group before her eyes stopped on the youngest of them. “Any luck Peter?”
“No, Mr. Stark has a meeting and must have turned off his phone, Dr. Strange and Dr. Banner aren’t picking up either.” Jo frowned before an idea popped into her head. She grabbed her phone and tossed it to Peter, motioning for the other boys to lay down the sick and injured.
“Call Bucky, he might get here quicker than the others. And if he doesn’t, call Sam. They should have the clearance we need.” Peter nodded, looking a bit panicked as he took off his mask to start making more calls. “Tanner, go run and get me more clean rags, a bowl of cold water, another of warm and see if we have a medical kit lying around.” The man nodded, quickly running off. “Rowland, apply pressure to Andy’s wounds. The bonds I put on are going to be breaking soon; they aren’t made to last long and you know how I am with healing.”
“Yeah; you’re basically a doctor who got their license revoked who has the same radiation poisoning as the Hulk.” Rowland pointed out and her brows knitted together.
“Hey, just cause I can only revive people when angry does not mean…” She paused. “Well, you aren’t fully wrong, but live matters more than jokes right now.” ******************************************************************************************* Peter paced as he heard Jo command Rowland on where to apply the pressure, the sound of a dial tone bound to haunt him at this point. Friday was right, no one had been responding no matter how many times he tried to ca-
“Hello?” Bucky’s voice interrupted Peter’s thoughts and the boy nearly shouted for joy.
“Bucky!” He couldn’t help but call it, a smile on his face before he returned to the reality of his call.
“Peter? Why are you using Jo’s phone? Where is-”
“Andy got shot and Steve’s sick. Happy added clearance codes to get into the infirmary and none of us can get in and no one else has answered my calls and-” In his rambling, he dropped formalities, his fear easily making him forget in favor of getting out all the information.
“Easy kid, Sam and I are on the way.” Peter could hear shuffling on the other side of the phone. “How is everyone doing?” Peter glanced back over to the group on the floor, Tanner dabbing at Steve’s forehead with a damp rag while Jo was investigating Andy’s wounds with Rowland keeping pressure on the other ones.
“I, I can’t fully tell and don’t want to bother them because they’re all doing things.” Peter said and he could hear Bucky nod.
“Sam and I are getting ready to drive over, we’ll be there in-” A long beat sounded from Friday and Jo panicked, knocking aside Rowland’s hands as she started to chant.
“Gotta go!” Peter yelled, hanging up as he moved to help. Rowland moved to lunge towards his brother, Peter webbing him back so that Jo could focus. “Give her space Rowland! She’s got this; she won’t let him die!” He tried to calm him, having to use more webs to keep him from breaking them.
A bright light shined behind them as Jo finished her spell, the light fading to show Andy without wounds and Jo looking as pale as Steve did. Tanner scrambled to catch her, his eyes still a bit blinded by the light of the spell when he caught her around the shoulders. He looked like a dancer with his pose, his body facing away from the three on the ground as he balanced on one hand and one leg between her and Steve with the other to catch her, his other in the air.
Both Peter and Rowland moved to help, Peter laying Jo down as Rowland clung to his brother. Tanner sighed, looking up to the air again.
“Call Tony. And if he doesn’t pick up, call the people in the meeting he’s in.” Tanner looked down to the group, taking them in. Steve was sick as hell, Peter was scared as hell, Andrew was hurt as hell, Rowland was crying like hell and Jo was weak as hell. “Because I need to talk to him.” ******************************************************************************************* Tony was in the middle of explaining a point for his newest business move when someone’s phone went off, the janitor quickly excusing himself with multiple apologies. Tony had just gotten back into it when the cleaner interrupted him again. “The girl says her name is Friday and she needs to talk to you?” He seemed creeped out that someone called his phone to get to Tony, but held it out to him nonetheless. “She said it was an emergency and to not take no for an answer.” Tony grabbed the phone, glancing to the group.
“Just one moment.” He sent them a charming smile, quickly moving out of the room to figure out why his AI was so desperate to contact him. “Friday, what do you-”
“Open the damn infirmary Stark.” He was quite confused when he heard Tanner instead of Friday when he was expecting the lovely AI instead of an angry twenty year old.
“What do you-”
“Steve’s out cold on the ground sick with something we don’t know of and has for a few hours, Andy just had to be revived and Jo is out cold from the revival and I swear to everything holy Stark, if you do not open this door within the next ten seconds, there will be no one to continue the Stark line.” He threatened.
“Friday, open the doors.” Tony moved his sleeve, watching the scene from his watch instead of just hearing. Tanner picked up Steve as best he could, carrying him in while Rowland took his brother and Peter picked up Jo. “Why did the doors not open?” It took Tanner a few seconds to respond, him getting Steve situated in one of the beds.
“We don’t have clearance apparently. Happy didn’t put us at a proper code to get in here, so Andy died outside the doors and if Jo hadn’t been here…” Tanner trailed off, shaking his head as he started to gather Steve’s vitals. “Bucky and Sam are on their way now, but trust me when I say no one is too happy with the situation.”
“Neither am I - I told Happy I’d handle any system like that to make sure that none of the workers could get into a room without knowing a code for safety reasons. Someone’s been stealing from the infirmary and we wanted to make it stop.” Tony sounded as pissed as Tanner looked. “I’ll be having a long talk with him very soon. Do you kids need me there or are you guys good?” Tony asked and Tanner shook his head. “We’ll be good. And make sure you inform Happy that it’s a good thing you’re talking to him instead of us because we wouldn’t be as nice.” ******************************************************************************************* Sam flew them towards the tower, looking to Bucky. “Are you sure this is our best route?” He asked as the tower got closer.
“They wouldn’t let us in, we need a way in and the magic user’s down.” Bucky held onto Sam’s arm, dead set on this. “Besides, I didn’t climb onto that rocket for the hell of it; I live a life of bad choices and this just happens to be one of them.” Sam rolled his eyes, but went along with it anyway.
“Ready?” Sam sounded like he had many doubts.
“Do it now before I change my mind!” Bucky called and Sam sighed, throwing Bucky at the window. It shattered and he rolled, moving to rest on a knee as he looked out to Sam. Sam had a big smile on his face, about to talk about what just happened, but Bucky held up a hand. “Save the amazement for later; someone flatlined, remember?” Back to business, the two started for the infirmary.
“Had to make an entrance, huh?” Tanner called down the hall before they made it to the room. A chair was keeping the doors open, the sound of someone coughing filling the air. Three were on the bed, Peter was sitting beside Jo with a panicked look in his eyes and Rowland was sleeping with his head on the mattress by Andy. “Tony finally opened the door.” He double checked the IV he had on Steve, sighing softly as he looked over to the two. “Sorry for the flatline scare, Andy took a turn for the worse and-”
“It’s alright T,” Sam started, walking over to him. “You don’t need to explain right now, just tell us what to do.” Tanner nodded, scanning the three beds.
“I need to do a check on Jo and Andy; can one of you grab a blanket for Rowland and the other stay here with Steve?” The duo nodded and they all split, Sam going for the blanket while Bucky stayed with the barely awake Steve.
“Friday, what’s his temperature?” Bucky asked, sitting on the chair beside his bed.
“103.7, it’s been going down since the team found him.” Bucky nodded, grabbing the rag that was left in the bowl of ice water. He dipped it in and gently dabbed at his face, Steve stirring at the contact.
“James?” He mumbled and Bucky couldn’t help but smile.
“I’m here punk.” He moved so that he was closer to Steve, a smile pulling at the blond’s face.
“I missed you.” Bucky rolled his eyes. “How was the fair?” Bucky arched an eyebrow.
“What fair?” Steve yawned, looking more delirious than before to Bucky. “What fair Stevie?”
“The science one.” He mumbled before drifting off, Bucky looking far past concerned and bewildered. Tanner sighed as he jotted down a few notes, making eye contact with the other soldier.
“You guys good over there?” He called and Bucky shook his head.
“I don’t think Steve knows what…” He paused before continuing. “I don’t think he knows what time he’s in.” Tanner frowned.
“He had remembered last time he was awake.” He stood with a slight stumble, but shook it off as he walked over. “When he first woke up, he thought that I was Howard Stark who had let his hair grow long; quite the act to put up when you don’t know the man, but he was out again before he could get some real strength behind his punches.”
“He punched you?” Sam piped up, looking concerned.
“He thought I was impersonating Howard Stark and kidnapped him; I’d be punching and kicking too if I thought that.” He flipped through a couple pages on a notepad he had, Steve’s name scrawled across the top. “Especially because I never met Howard Stark and probably didn’t impersonate him well. Anyway, he woke up a few minutes before you guys got in and remembered me and where he was.”
“Could be Aseptic Meningitis, but that doesn’t make sense.” Tanner couldn’t help it; his fist seconds from Doctor Strange’s face, the man panting as he stopped himself in time.
“A warning would be nice Doc.” He straightened out, shaking his head a bit to clear it.
“Avoiding a fist to the face is nice too, but you don’t hear me complaining.” He spoke back as he approached Steve. He grabbed the notebook from Tanner, glancing over the notes he jotted down. “Chills, stomach pain, head and body ache, and fatigue fit Aseptic Meningitis perfectly and mental confusion is another symptom on the drastic side, but with how Steve’s system is, he should get sick to something this… menial? Not the right word, but this shouldn’t be the sickness to take down Steve Rogers unless - Friday, get me a blood sample from the captain and let me know his white blood cell number.”
“Captain Rogers has 2,819 white blood cells in his body.” Stephen frowned at that.
“It should easily be over 5,000.” Tanner said and the trio of adults looked up at him. “What, Andy sometimes rambles in his sleep. Either way,” He said, bringing his attention back to Steve. “His count is way too low, so something is happening that’s wrong. Once Andy wakes up, we should get a better knowledge of it, but that won’t be till morning from how it looks.”
“Then what do we do?” Bucky asked, resting his jacket over Peter’s sleeping form.
“Watch Steve like a hawk. Pray that Andy wakes up earlier than my estimate. Give him fluids, keep his temperature down; we treat it like we would anyone else being sick. While we have to keep a closer eye on his WBC count, it shouldn’t be that hard with more than one set of eyes on him.” Tanner pointed out and they nodded.
“I’m needed back in the sanctorum, but I’ll be keeping an eye on you all from there.” Tanner nodded, shaking Stephen’s hand.
“Thanks Doc.”
“And get some sleep, you’re looking drained.” ******************************************************************************************* Tanner listened not to Stephen, staying up all night to watch the trio of heroes to make sure that no one got worse. The night went over smoothly, Sam forcing both Tanner and Bucky to eat at some point in the night before they both went back in the room to fret. The moment that Andy woke up, Tanner brought him up to speed and had him heal Steve so they could figure out what happened.
“Someone messed with his cell count through a gas; it took down a lot of them, but the healing should have helped.” He checked over the notes and then Steve, frowning. “And we’ll have to inform Doctor Strange that that wasn’t just Aseptic Meningitis, there was something enhancing the virus to make it that extreme.”
Steve opened his eyes, looking around the faces in confusion as he tried to sit up, but his arm was restrained down. “Why am I strapped to a table?”
“Because even sick, you have one hell of a right hook.” Tanner said, moving to untie him from the makeshift restraint. “I had others to look after and didn’t want to have someone restrain you all night.” Bucky explained what happened to Steve as Andy looked over Tanner.
“Did you even sleep last night?” Andy asked and Tanner smiled.
“Course I did Row, I’m not Jo-Jo.”
“And I’m not Rowland.” Tanner looked confused for a second before mumbling a curse, rubbing at his eyes. “And you’re going to sleep. Steve’s healed and Jo just needs sleep, just like you do.” He led the speedster to one of the free beds, making him lay down. “It’s time for you to go to bed Dr. Lee; we’ve got this.”
Tanner wanted to fight, but knew he had no chance. He closed his eyes, enjoying the warmth of the blanket. “Sleep well, sweet prince.”
Tanner laughed at Andy’s words, cracking open an eye. “If I wasn’t this tired, I’d beat you up And-ratio.” He joked.
“Shut up and sleep Prince Tan-let.”

2 Episodes! (submission)
Kail: While I agree that it would be scary to have Javi say he’s coming over to talk etc., I think she got the PFA to avoid having a conversation with him about the pregnancy at all. He found out and texted her ten times. Some may see that as creepy. I see it as a guy who just discovered something huge and wants to discuss it. And, as the father of her child and only very recent ex-husband, he’s entitled to a conversation. Anyone would have questions. Kail thinks she’s above having to explain herself to anyone, ever. It’s only her business? So how this baby and this man effects her other kids and their fathers and families is none of their business? She avoided telling him because she wanted to avoid the questions. Good for Vee. She spoke out and seems to be refusing to be fake and film with Kail. She and Jo deserve 50/50 because they are the most stable parental figures in Isaac’s life and Kail had some nerve acting as though Vee was a bad stepmom for not attending every one of Isaac’s soccer games. That’s the best she could come up with while she admittedly lived a double life. Like Vee, I feel like if I were going through a divorce the last thing I’d be thinking about was having a baby with a 3rd man. I’d be focusing on my kids. I used to love that about Kail. Now she seems happy enough to drop them with Jo and Javi. On a positive note, Lincoln and his ‘I’m a genius’ thing is beyond adorable. He’s SO funny and cute. And Isaac is so sweet and sensitive. Kail’s decisions seem to really be effecting him and I hope it doesn’t continue. She never seems to learn though. Supposedly she got chlamydia once and she still thinks protection is only for preventing pregnancy? No, she wanted to get pregnant. Even after her rambling explanation, we still don’t know if the father actively tried or not.
Leah: Much, MUCH better. She’s got her hands full, especially with Gracie. She’s 8 going on 18. I thought Leah handled it very well, telling her how rude she was being. She was so rude refusing to tell Addie Happy Birthday too. Leah and Corey are going to have to battle it out every step of the way with that one lol, but she’s a sweet kid when she wants to be. Reminds me of my oldest. Is Jeremy really that dumb? Addie never knows when she’s going to see him again! Of course she’s going to be upset when her brief periods of time with him come to an end. Maybe if he came around more, or had a more stable visitation schedule, it’d be easier on her. It does still drive me crazy the way Leah (and most of the girls) say things like 'supposebly’, 'I seen’ etc. It’s just irritating that someone who can’t speak basic English makes a 6 figure salary.
Brianna: As much as I love Brittany, all the funny things she says need to be said outside the presence of Nova. They sit there and talk about Everything and then some on front of her as if she’s a dog. She’s hearing every word, believe me. I can’t believe they’re all acting so shocked that Luis 'cheated’, as if he and Bri had been together for so long. I’d feel really bad if I were Stella watching this back later. And Bri seriously needs to drop the innocent girl act. She wanted a baby, she got pregnant on purpose, and her family acts like none of those things were ever said on Twitter. It’s all the evil man’s fault. Nova was so cute saying, I’d tell them no, get out of our house! Anyway, it’s been 5 years or more and Brianna has made zero progress in life. No schooling, no job, no life. For those saying why can’t she just sign the baby over to Luis: a, he never offered, and b, she’d have to pay him child support. Not that she ever really considered adoption anyway. I just hope she never actually got some poor couple’s hopes up.
Chelsea: I think she’s right about Aubree making up the ghost thing. It’s been just Aubree and Chelsea for so long, it’s an adjustment. She was accepting enough of Cole because he’s so laid back and wasn’t much of a diversion from her mother. The baby on the other hand..he’s taking some getting used to. She’s not used to sharing her Mom. She’s used to being the cute little baby in the house. It’s just going to take some time and patience. She said she’s laying in bed listening to them basically be a family without her and I can see how a kid would feel bad. But she has to understand she’s a child who has to have a certain amount of rest and get up for school so there’s nothing to be done there. I loved the ghost spray idea but I’d imagine Chelsea is just going to have to put her foot down and endure some crying for a few nights to get her back out of their bed. I’m sure once Watson gets older and she can be more involved playing with him, she’ll be happier and feel more secure. Loved all their dance moves :)
Jenelle: Ensley is a gorgeous baby. Kai was so sweet with her and so funny with his pants. David saying there’s no reason for her to speak to Babs, that he’s the mediator, is SO controlling. It’s her mother, not Nathan. At least Jenelle doesn’t let him stop her. That’s one reason I worry she’s met her match. She’s not going to back down; if the blind is to be believed, she even swung on him. Nevermind that he’s twice her size. Jenelle will pick a fight and take a real beating from this one. It’s a good sign that he just walked out though. I’m sure he’s heard plenty about how she’s always making accusations and didn’t fall into that trap but who knows if he’ll always be able to hold his temper. Nathan’s so stupid. He gave up a weekend, gave up Thursday-Sunday for Friday-Sunday, and it was made into supervised visit. But there was 'no change, I’m not giving up any custodies’. Okkkk.

Man. Where to even begin this week. Well. I will start by saying my reading achievements were next to none. Not quite none. But near enough. Work has been very demanding, I have been very tired and my heart just was not in it. No reflection on the books, more a reflection on my weary and rapidly ageing bones and brain telling me to take a break. In fact I am writing this post in stages as I know where my head is currently at so it if makes no sense come the end … well nowt new there really but this time there is an excuse at least 🙂
So, anyway. Aside from being generally ancient (turned 42 this past week don’t you know) I was preoccupied with something else. Lordy 42. Do you remember being a kid and thinking that people in their forties were ancient? Well I’ll let you into a secret – when you finally reach your forties you bloody feel it too. Just kidding. Age is just a number. Like my chest, mine is just larger than some, that’s all. But back to my point (wandering mind comes with age too…) I was away from home from Thursday until Sunday this week because I took the plunge, packed my backbone in a small holdall and made my way to Harrogate for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Festival.
It’s an interesting festival, very different in tone to Crimefest, geared very much to a social atmosphere but encouraging and enticing readers with a healthy and steady supply of books. I say healthy with my tongue in my cheek (not easy to do without biting said tongue – don’t believe me try it), as carrying around the dang things all day has knackered my shoulder but hey ho.
As book hauls go, this week was mega. It was also rather big in terms of meeting people. I met a whole host of bloggers this weekend who I’m not going to try and name for fear of missing someone and causing great upset, but it was a pleasure to meet you all either finally or again (and you super lovely ones already know who you are 😉 ). I also met quite a few authors that I admire, including Robert Byrndza and the lovely Jan, Caroline Mitchell and Mel Sherratt, Graham Smith, Sarah Wray, Claire Seeber and also got to meet Keshini Naidoo (yes – a small Bookouture bias in this post I think).
It was also lovely to catch up with Kim Nash, Karen Sullivan, Steph Broadribb, Amanda Jennings, Lucy V Hay, Amer Anwar, Felicia Yap, Patricia Gibney, Bernie Steadman and Fiona Cummins again, and to get to say hi to Paul Burston as I absolutely loved his book The Black Path. I even remembered to take pictures of some of them (but not many as I suck at that). Oh yes, and it was nice to see Rod Reynolds again even if he did show Jo and Emma the terrible selfie he took at Crimefest (terrible because I was in it). And lovely to finally meet Graeme Cumming and have a catch up chat with Gabriela Harding in the quiet times. I’m just hoping I haven’t missed anyone and if I have I’m sorry and I do love you too. (Well at least like and admire – love is such a strong word 😉 ).
Have to give credit to Abbie Osborne for the selfies as I would totally not take those 😀
As well as generally milling about I did attend a couple of panels, though not as many as I perhaps would have liked so I’ll try better next time. The Friday night panel chaired by Sarah Millican and featuring Lee Child, Mark Billingham and Val McDermid was hilarious as you would expect. And I totally agree with Sarah Hilary’s shout out for Chris Whitaker as a totally brilliant writing talent. I also went to a blogger/author event organised by Orion where we met Mari Hannah, Emma Kavanagh, Stephanie Marland (aka Steph Broadribb, aka Crime Thriller Girl) and Lara Dearman, a forensics talk in which I learned many important things to include in ‘Killer’, and a quick start talk on writing crime fiction with Isabel Ashdown and Sam Eades.
And I had two lovely evenings out, firstly with Abigail Osborne, Leah and Jill of Jills Book Cafe, and then with Tracy Fenton and the guy and gals from TBC. Thanks for the company all.
And then there were the books… So. Many. Books.
I got the following:
The Devils Claw by Lara Dearman (Kindle pre order 7/9/17);
My Little Eye by Stephanie Marland (Kindle pre order 2/11/17) Happy dance moment :D;

Did I mention I love that book? I do. I was so excited I may have actually started reading this in bed instead of the books I should have been reading. Oops. (Sorry – not sorry). All the eeeeeeeeeks and squeeeeeeeeals.
The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (pre order January 2018);
Consent by Leo Benedictus (pre order 1/2/18);
Perfect Remains by Helen Fields;
Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughn (Kindle pre order 11/1/18);
Strange Magic by Syd Moore
So all in all a great book haul of a weekend. And I visited Betty’s and treated myself to a belated birthday cake. Go me.
Now the weekend wasn’t without it’s down moments too but least said, soonest mended so lets move on.
Now as if all that wasn’t brilliant enough, before I left for Harrogate I received some absolutely stonkingly fantabulous book post from the wonderful Louise Ross (LJ Ross). Now I knew I’d be getting the signed book as I won it in a charity auction, as well as the chance to be a named character. But I wasn’t expecting to receive a DCI Ryan series mug as well. I actually collect mugs as well as books so this couldn’t have been a better gift for me and will take pride of place in the collection.
And, totally not book related but my new cushions and mugs turned up. How fab are these?
The McMoos by Jennifer Hogwood – You totally need to check out the website.
Just the one book order this week (just as well) which was Bad Sister by Sam Carrington. It’s due out on 5th October and I can’t wait to get my mitts on a copy.
Just the one Netgalley this week too (just as well) which was The Good Sister by Jess Ryder. It’s due for release on 16th August.
I see a theme here. Kind of reminiscent of my life. I have one of each. I’ll let them fight over which is which 😉
I also received an ARC of I Know A Secret by Tess Gerritsen, the brand new Rizzoli and Isles novel which is due out on 10th August.
Now I am hoping that all of these exciting things I’ve been rambling about above will distract you from my reading tally which stands at the grand total of 2. Lorraine at The Book Review Cafe will be laughing at me this week given her mammoth reading achievements and rightly so. If only I’d saved the bloody Mr Men books… When I say reading tally it was one read, one listen as I only completed one book and then listened to an audio on the way too and from Harrogate. Failed blogger I am then (this is not news but now we have evidence).
Books I have read
Red Is The Colour by Mark L. Fowler
A GRIPPING NEW POLICE THRILLER Bullying. Corruption. Murder.
It is the summer of 2002. The corpse of a 15 year old boy, who has been missing for thirty years, is discovered in Stoke-on-Trent. The city is on the cusp of change and Chief Superintendent Berkins wants the case solved quickly.
DCI Jim Tyler has arrived from London under a cloud, moving to Staffordshire to escape his past. He is teamed up with DS Danny Mills to investigate the case, but there is tension between the detectives.
When the dead boy’s sister comes forward, describing a bright, solitary child, she points a finger at the school bullies, which puts important careers at stake.
Then one of the bullies is found brutally murdered and when Tyler and Mills dig deeper they start to suspect a cover-up.
What is the connection between the death of a schoolboy in 1972 and this latest killing?
With the pressure building, and the past catching up with DCI Tyler, will he and DS Mills be able to put aside their differences in order to catch a cold-blooded killer?
I’m reviewing this for the blog tour next Monday but I have to be honest and say that this was a really well observed look at childhood bullying an the people who were involved, both directly and indirectly. With a thirty year old victim it is a tough ask for newly transferred DCI Jim Tyler to bring the killer to justice in this new police procedural from Mark L. Fowler and Bloodhound Books. It is released tomorrow, 25th July, and you can buy a copy here.
You Don’t Know Me by Imran Mahmood
It’s easy to judge between right and wrong – isn’t it?
Not until you hear a convincing truth.
Now it’s up to you to decide…
An unnamed defendant stands accused of murder. Just before the Closing Speeches, the young man sacks his lawyer, and decides to give his own defence speech.
He tells us that his barrister told him to leave some things out. Sometimes, the truth can be too difficult to explain, or believe. But he thinks that if he’s going to go down for life, he might as well go down telling the truth.
There are eight pieces of evidence against him. As he talks us through them one by one, his life is in our hands. We, the reader – member of the jury – must keep an open mind till we hear the end of his story. His defence raises many questions… but at the end of the speeches, only one matters:
Did he do it?
Oh my life. What an intriguing novel. Taking courtroom drama to brand new heights this is a story which will not only challenge your idea of right and wrong but also the whole idea of how courtroom dramas should be. Set as a series of court transcripts and told in the defendants voice the author takes you on a journey and you as reader are set to act as jury. I listened to the Audio book of this and I have to say it was absolutely perfect in this format. My review will follow but you can order a copy of the book here.
That is all. Thankfully I was fully prepared on the blogging front so I had posts everyday.
