In fact, he took such great pains to keep others out of the loop that people started to speculate (Dick, mostly, and Barbara, and then all the others — it just made sense at the time). So, when Batman dies, and Gotham city is in chaos, Nightwing decides to use an unlikely ally to fight the good fight. There's no way Red Hood won't agree to help, being in love with Batman as he was.

Sunday Snippets, May 21st, 2017

A bit over 6k written this week, so far anyway, I might work a bit more still tonight. Also I spent some time enjoying the spring that decided to finally arrive. The trees only got leaves this week, which is ridiculous. But it was pretty good finally.

I worked on two fics this week; I wrote another section for At This Distance You’re a Mirage, just plodding along with it, adding scenes to the draft, so it keeps growing. Getting into more juicy character dynamics so it’s fun.

The other thing I did was work more on Dream of Home Tonight, which is the sequel to The Platform of Surrender and Looking for the Answer, also the final part of that series. The first two were both all told in one POV, and this third will be divided between the two of them, three sections for both, and not overlapping. So far I’ve written one for each, about 5k in total, so it’ll most likely be a bit longer than the first two. I’m hoping to get the first draft done over the next week, and then it could be ready for AO3 the weekend after that. I do have a bit of life stuff next week too, so we’ll see. This week’s excerpt is also from this fic.

Last week I said it was still a bit vague in my head, happily not anymore, now it feels solid enough. As I mentioned earlier this week, I like the part of writing process where you only really know how something is going to turn out when the actual writing is done. Even when I’ve got bits of dialogue in my drafts I only end up using the exact line only about a quarter of time, otherwise I have the spirit but the words are different.

This is a few weeks after the hospital where the first two fics end:

Bucky says he can’t sleep due to nightmares, and Steve sends him back an address and instruction to meet him there. A quick search lets Bucky know it’s a gym, apparently an old fashioned boxing gym, which sounds like the kind of place Steve would go to, despite all the facilities the Avengers have at their disposal.

When Bucky arrives, he finds the door unlocked and some of the lights on, but not enough to make it bright. Steve is in the middle of the boxing ring, stretching. 

“I’m guessing you didn’t break in here?” Bucky says by way of greeting.

“I pay for a special membership, so Archie has given me a key.”

“A special Captain America membership? I seem to remember you not liking to make a big deal about it.” Bucky feels lighter already, more settled.

“I’m willing to make an exception for not being stared at in the gym. Get in.”

Steve waves Bucky into the ring, and after a moment’s hesitation he complies, stripping out of his coat, hoodie and boots. He’s wearing sweatpants, since he couldn’t be bothered to put on anything else, so he’s all ready to go. Still, he’d hesitate, except there is a stubborn look in Steve’s eyes, and Bucky knows that either he’ll do as Steve ask or they’ll argue, and sparring will be a good way to release energy. There are still the memories from the helicarrier, but he’s got his head all for himself now, so he can do it.

They start lightly, just moving around each other, slight jabs and feints, and Bucky settles in it, finds the balance in his stance, the strength in his feet. They slowly add the intensity and bit by bit Bucky finds he can’t think of anything else but moving, punching, and blocking, and it feels good, it’s easy. Not physically; he’s having to strain all out to keep up with Steve, but it’s easy for his head.

They keep at it for better part of two hours, until they finally tumble down on the floor. Bucky lies on his back staring at the ceiling, in peace, the nightmare shaken away. Steve is sitting next to him, looking at him with curious eyes.

“You know you’re rusty, right? Last time we fought you we’re much bigger challenge. And I don’t think it’s all to do with you lacking inhibitions back then.”

Bucky keeps staring at the ceiling, knowing it’s true. Replaying the last couple of hours in his head, he knows Steve adjusted to him instead of going all out. Bucky feels his face split with a grin. “Yeah, I know.”

Truth is, he hadn’t really trained at all during his year in Canada, or over the weeks he’s been back in New York. After DC, on the run and while in Bucharest he’d kept up with a program, but after waking up in Wakanda it hadn’t felt like he needed it. He’d been just that much more secure in himself. And it’s a relief, bigger than he ever could have imagined, to know that he actually can get rusty, relatively so anyway. It’s a relief to know he’s still human enough.
