we prepared pretty well for the storm and didn't lose power but we're Still iced in. it stopped sleeting for long enough tonight for me to strap some microspikes onto my sneakers and walk to a convenience store for milk, which made me laugh because even back in new hampshire i never needed microspikes for anything except hiking. when it ices here, there is nothing to be done. nh infrastructure is full of salt trucks and plows and shovels for sidewalks and whatnot, but here there will be full inches of ice on the road and on the sidewalks until it melts. usually it melts in a day! when you're feeling the effects of ongoing climate catastrophe, tho, it does not. anyway it felt good to get out of the house and stretch my legs but my calves and feet are now burning So Bad. walking a mile having to dig spikes into ice with every step is probably the physical equivalent of 2-3 miles on normal terrain.

also i fell once when the spikes on one foot slipped off but i didn't die. 🥳

Just a heads up, I'm probably gonna be a little quieter/less active for a bit. Just found out my lease isn't getting renewed so I have to find a new place by the end of August, so that whole process is gonna be taking up a lot of my time and energy 🙃

u know what i've been thinking about. how the economy expects you to be, right now, at a job you've been at and consistently getting raises in for like, ten years. it's almost like the implication is "well yeah, you'll be able to live off this job in three, five, ten years if you stick with it and grow in the company" which is all fine and dandy, but i kind of need to live right now

Series of events that somehow are supposed to be normal and make sense to me

-leak in window of apartment during big storm

-place work order over the phone about leak

-property services manager stops by during scheduled pest control visit bc building is old and has bugs, she asks how things have been while living here

-follow up in person abt work order and she didn't know about it

-she says emailing is not an ideal way to submit work orders, and I tell her I did it over the phone, which she says is the preferred way to do it

-she personally takes photos of the location of the leak, inside and outside, as well as anything that looked like structural damage

-afterwards she gives me her email and tells me to contact her if I have any problems

-rains again several hours later and the leak is MUCH worse, several floorboards are severely water damaged and I have to stop work early to move furniture and put down towels

-email both her and the maintenance guy video evidence of the leak, as it is not clear where it's coming from when it's not actively leaking, and frankly they both need pressure to arrange to fix the damn thing before it rains again on Friday

-response to the email is a copy-pasted paragraph about an emergency work order hotline to call, and why we should not email work orders

-email her AGAIN to remind her that this is not a work order, this is a follow up for a follow up for an EXISTING WORK ORDER, and SHE told me to EMAIL her if I needed anything and SHE took photos of the affected window, and perhaps it would make sense for her, the one in possession of the photos, to have a video to go with them to attach to the EXISTING WORK ORDER that I placed OVER A WEEK AGO over the phone LIKE SHE ASKED ME TO

I have family members who strongly identify with and go hard for teams from the city that our Grandparents met in, but that nobody in our family has lived in for two generations.
