We’re house-sitting right now, so I don’t have my usual equipment. I’m filming this with a mirrorless camera, no microphone, no tripod, and no professional lighting. When I stumbled upon this Apple-certified refurbished iMac Pro on Newegg, it was a no-brainer. The deal was incredible—23% off the original retail price. To give you some numbers, a brand-new base configuration iMac Pro would set you back $4,999. Thanks to Newegg, I got this one for $3,849. Even better, Newegg didn’t charge sales tax, unlike Apple’s official refurbished section, which had this model priced over $4,000 plus tax. So, I managed to save a significant amount of money, which is always a win.Unboxing the iMac ProAlright, enough about the backstory—let’s get to the unboxing! The packaging is top-notch, with a sturdy foam box to protect the contents during shipping. I remember my previous iMacs having pictures on the box, but this one is all about minimalism, featuring just the serial number and specs on the side.As I peel off the Apple tape and open the box, the first thing that catches my eye is the keyboard. It’s a sleek, dark color, which I love because it won’t show dirt and grime as easily as the white ones. Plus, it has a number pad—a must-have for me. Alongside the keyboard, there’s the Magic Mouse, also in black. While I appreciate the aesthetic, I actually prefer using a Logitech thumb-ball mouse for ergonomic reasons.Now, for the main event—the iMac Pro itself. I recognize this is an odd thing to think about when talking about a desktop computer, but, well, it’s the iMac. After all, this is probably the kind of thing you’re going to want to hold onto for a number of years, so lighting and interior decorating are both worth considering before you make your decision. But the system and even the keyboard is a bit more of a commitment, really. The latter two, obviously, are something you’re able to futz around with a bit. The keyboard matches, the cables match, the desktop wallpaper matches, the adorable packaging matches (it’s a fun unboxing experience, as those things go) and even little touches like the OS buttons match. That goes double here - since, boy howdy, is Apple on theme. It’s really the sort of thing that really benefits from being seen in person, if possible. I will advise that anyone who plans to buy one of these systems visit an Apple Store if there’s one nearby if you’re comfortable doing so. Honestly, it’s more of a gold than I expected, with a bright and shiny glean to it. Mine landed with a yellow hue - something nice, light and spring. Everyone wants to know which we’d be getting. It was the most frequently discussed question around the TechCrunch (virtual) offices. It finds the company moving from what was ostensibly an industrial design to something more warm and welcoming. Sure, there have been plenty of updates since then, but nine years is a long time for an Apple design to go without a major refresh. The flat-panel design arrived early this century and settled into the most recent design around 2012. Of course, the design language has evolved dramatically in the nearly quarter-century since the first iMac arrived, owing to changing styles and, of course, ever-reducing component sizes. The colorful line of all-in-ones ushered in Steve Jobs’ second triumphant stint with the company, arriving at the tail end of a decade in a year personified by the Volkswagen’s New Beetle. But I’m at a loss for a better word to describe what feels like a true spiritual successor to the iMac G3. Words like “cool” or “sleek” are generally go-tos here. The overarching theme for the system is “cute.” This is not a word I often apply to technology. In spite of adding 2.5 inches to the display size over the 21.5-inch, the new system is an extremely thin 11.5 mm (or 14.7 when the stand is factored in). I was genuinely surprised by how compact the new design is, compared to past iMacs. There’s an immediate upside, too, of course. I’d initially assumed that added bit of screen real estate was going to be fairly negligible once you’ve passed the 20-inch threshold, but turns out, like anything else, it takes some getting used to. Having used a 27-inch iMac for much of my day-to-day work throughout the pandemic, I’m honestly surprised by how much I miss those extra three inches. The biggest thing the 2020 system has going for it is that it’s, well, big.

I'd have liked an HDMI and two more USB-C ports at the least (see: the cheaper Mac Mini), but this is still a solid and versatile selection.Īpple hasn't changed the 27-inch display panel itself-you still get a 5K resolution (5,120 x 2,880 pixels), which is incredibly sharp, and the colors look wonderfully accurate. You get a headphone jack, Ethernet jack (upgradeable to 10-gigabit), SD card slot, four USB-A ports, and two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports. There are a few ports, too! Compared to what you get on a MacBook Pro, the iMac feels like a Swiss Army Knife. The screen can't swivel side-to-side either, which makes it difficult to reach the ports on the back, especially if you have the iMac against a wall. I used my tester unit on a standing desk so I was able to get around the limitation. You still cannot adjust the $1,799 iMac's height, only tilt the screen up and down. Put it next to a Microsoft Surface Studio 2 or this Dell Inspiron and it won't look quite as modern-the thick frame and portly bezels (edges around the screen) don't help-but this is still an attractive machine.Īpple's bigger mistake is not improving the stand. The (recyclable) aluminum chassis is sleek and the swooping stand is graceful. However, if you need a desktop that won't take up much space, and has enough power to run almost all the tasks you throw at it, this 2020 iMac won't disappoint. And if you were hoping for Apple's own silicon powering the iMac, that might take some time too. If you were hoping for a modern iPad Pro–like makeover, you'll need to wait a little longer. It looks the same, and is still just as elegant. I've been using the new 27-inch model in the tiny bedroom of my New York apartment for almost a month, and unboxing it brought a wave of memories of the many hours I spent in that old newsroom. The new iMac looks and feels no different. All this while looking more stylish than any other piece of tech in the room. It was adept at handling Adobe InDesign (which we used to lay out the news pages) and the dozens of Chrome tabs and Word docs I had open at any given moment.
