Casa Burés is an emblematic modernist building, close to the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona, designed by Francisco Berenguer, a close collaborator of Antoni Gaudí. The interior is furnished with the STUA Costura sofa paired with Solapa tables; and the dining area that uses Lau table surrounded by Laclasica chairs. here are some barcelona recs from someone who lives there, other than things barça related:
- the beach, especially in the mornings or during sunset
- for a pretty view of the whole city: tibidabo/temple expiatori del sagrat cor, túro de la rovira, mirador del nen de la rutlla, mirador de l'alcalde, MNAC
- shopping: passeig de gràcia, portal de l'angel/ciutat vella - try to avoid la rambla if you can
- if you like gardens: teatre grec/jardins de laribal, jardí botànic de barcelona, parc del laberint d'horta, parc de la ciutadella (+ hivernacle del parc de la ciutadella, a greenhouse in the park)
- for architecture/pretty things: parc güell, casa batlló, la perdrera, casa vincens gaudí, sagrada família (most people take their pictures in plaça de gaudí), recinte modernista de sant pau, arc de triomf, catedral de barcelona, el pont del bisbe, el mural del petó, palau de la música catalana, plaça reial
- food is very personal so just some general things: if you want to go to mercat de la boqueria, mercat de santa caterina is a better option with less tourists, try not to go to restaurants in the very busy and touristy streets, trust me the quality is bad, if you want to eat paella, eat it for lunch (it's not supposed to be a dinner food) at a specialized rice restaurant, and be prepared to eat dinner after 8/9PM haha
i didn't expect this to get this long, but here you go 😂
Don't mind me, gonna go ahead and jolt all of this down 😅

What happened to Levi Davis?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spanish police are still searching for England Rugby star, Levi Davis, who vanished without a trace on October 29th. Davis, who also appeared on the celebrity version of The X Factor, left The Irish Pub in La Rambla, Barcelona, alone at around 10:05 pm. He had traveled to the tourist hotspot from Ibiza just a day before, only carrying a small backpack. The grainy image of him leaving the bar is the last confirmed sighting of Levi.
Levi’s family had apparently received a tip that he was seen in Placa Sant Agusti Vell, a homeless area and a square just minutes away from Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf monument. However, nothing has been confirmed. Police have since confirmed that Levi’s passport was found by a member of the public. This is a worrying update as you cannot book into a hotel or even rent somewhere without one. His phone and two bank accounts have been untouched since he disappeared and so this is another blow for his family. The case is ongoing.

Mataro day 1
An earlyish ride so we could get our ride done before the heat. This ride did retrace some of what we did Thursday but without going gravel or super steep. It seems this route is a favourite among the locals as we encountered heaps of cyclists out there today.
Back at the campground we did a couple of chores before taking a picnic lunch to the pool (accompanied by a glass of rose acquired at the pool bar). The weather is definitely changing. I think the top today only got to 29 and there’s a nice breeze to keep things cool. It is forecast to rain tonight and tomorrow and at one point today on the ride it was definitely spitting a couple of drops (once I determined it wasn’t the wind blowing my own sweat back onto me 🙄).
Mid afternoon we caught the train into Barcelona. We arrived in time to see some of the teams practicing on the course. We decided to head towards the start and got there with time for a bit of shopping and a drink before cramming in to watch the first teams start.
We’d had a few spots of rain since arriving in Barcelona but of course minutes before the start we got rain and thunder and lightening. We’d brought our light rain jackets as we thought there was a chance we’d get a bit of drizzle but it pretty much rained for the entirety of the stage. It was also really dark. Sunset isn’t until 8:30ish but it was getting quite dark from about 6:30 on. We have a 100% hit rate with La Vuelta. This is the third stage we’ve watched and the third to have rain (and it’s never been a little rain 🙄). They’ll be paying us to stay away.
It was such a shame to see the ttt reduced to a limiting losses exercise and trying to keep upright. We saw every team on course and were front and centre when Laurens de Plus hit the deck (it looked really painful). We were by now near Parc Ciutadella and the Arc de Triomf and they had a big screen there where we could watch the last teams finish.
By now we were pretty wet so as soon as we knew the result we went in search of dinner. We had a nice dinner and it gave us the chance to dry out a bit. After dinner we caught the train and bus back to the campground. It’s been a big day.

Tis the end of the 2nd round of our trip. Figured I would highlight the top 10 stops we made.
Tumblr media
Stonehenge - we weren't going to visit London and not make this stop. Glad we did cause this pic is EPIC! Look, there is even a dove flying over my head. Just epic...
Tumblr media
Large Hadron Collider - Geneva Switzerland is one of the two most expensive places in all of Europe. (Zurich is the other). We went out and had Fondue for dinner and I told the Airbnb host "man, we just went to a really expensive restaurant, but it was good." Turned out to be the cheapest meal we could find during that stop. Our francs were going fast. Like atoms flying near the speed of light.. see what I did there?
Tumblr media
Rialto Bridge - Venice Italy has our affection. Next trip we take to France will no doubt include another visit to the City of Love. I miss you, Spritzes!
Tumblr media
The Colosseum - Rome overwhelmed us with all it had to offer. We were seeing sites and taking pics trying to collect them all, but the Pokemon were too many. Literally, we would see one thing and be like wow, and then turn around and there was something else. We had to go home the first day and regroup with a plan for what we wanted to see, cause it was out of control. So next we went and saw....
Tumblr media
Pompeii - Probably the single most amazing ancient site we saw on this trip (and we saw a lot). Being allowed to explore with no limitations, and experiencing walking through the streets and standing in the rooms the way the citizens of Pompeii once did was enough to keep me looking over my shoulder and asking "did you hear something?"
Tumblr media
Roman Aquaducts - totally underrated. These are GIANT structures spanning I don't know how far, bringing water to cities that could not exist without them. It was like seeing dinosaur bones left standing in their tracks in the middle of a field. Too cool.
Tumblr media
Baths of Caracalla - it took 9000 workers 5 years to build. When it was completed, 6000 Romans at a time could come bathe in this giant complex. Another underrated site defined as such because I'd never heard of them and this Tumblr is all about me, let's face it.
Tumblr media
GGANTIJA - while visiting Malta, we saw the Tarxien Temples, Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Hagar Qim, Mjandra Temple, and the beast you see above. A solid tour of ancient temples so epic, people make money writing books and TV shows about how aliens must have been involved. The feeling I got, having visited these, is I have to pick one view or the other: either it's AMAZING what early man accomplished or aliens are kind of disappointing in their lack of terrestrial abilities.
I choose to be amazed. We had a guide on the morning of the Spring Equinox who said: "it's kind of insulting to our ancestors that we see what they were able to achieve and say "you couldn't have done this on your own, you had help." Instead, we can stand in awe of what can be achieved when mankind works together toward a common goal."
Tumblr media
The Phoenician Cart Ruts - Probably aliens.
Tumblr media
Arc de Triomf - Does this belong in the top 10? Maybe not, but I can't just leave Barcelona Spain off the list completely. We intend to come back and visit. If we skip dinners in Geneva, we should be able to afford to stay here for a month or so. That will be nice.
I think we had hit our max on wanting to experience all the sites and sounds of the European Pokemon collecting by our last day in Barcelona, cause instead of rushing from Site A to Site B, we just bought a few Estrella Damms (popular beer in Spain) from a corner market and brought them into a Taco Bell and had a picnic, lol. That's a true story.

Winter holidays recap part 2
Arches
Going to La foixarda with my sister to practice rock climbing
Feeling my forearms sore
Then lunch at an Italian with Raúl and Fran
Picking up Nico and walking to arc de triomf
My sister meets Piotr
I walk her to the train
I stay with Piotr and I help him practice catalan
Only one swim in the Mediterranean
At night, frozen, before the unseasonably hot weather
The one time I go running, my knees are not made for running anymore
I hate it, but I don't push myself like I would have in the past
Learning to accept my limitations as I grow older (sort of)
Not meeting with as many friends
Some can't, some don't seem that interested
I start to feel the toll of time and absence
Marc and Marina and Marina are my salvation
The unexpected friend group that keeps me sane
I go to Barcelona to renew my driver's license and I see a friend of Alan from 15 years ago, he doesn't remember me, I think I freak him out a bit with very detailed memories of the one time we met
I forget about the integration of tickets so I walk home from the center, pass by Les Glòries and go in for, probably, the first time. After years of walking by and riding the night bus by it.
It takes me about 2 hours
I do a lot of duolingo lessons
