It always concerns me when I see a phone number written without an area code. Like, WHICH 555-5555 am I supposed to call? I know that stems from New Orleans only having one area code, so they assume you already know it, but I grew up in Houston, which is apparently getting a fifth area code soon, so it is kind of important that you include it.

Besides which, my personal phone still has a Houston area code, so I do still need to write it down.

Back when we were confined to the use of landlines and local calling plans, when telecommunications were conducted through #dialup connections over phone lines, the boundaries of these invisible territories demarcated specific manifestations of cyberspace that were beyond our reach. We make a big deal about having been established and rooted in area code #604 -- describing the province of British Columbia in Canada -- and coincidentally just a couple of days ago we wrote an extensive gloss of our home area code on a wiki we recently established, over at https://github.com/NicheInterests/mistfunk/wiki/area-code-604 , since entries pertaining to our corner of cyberspace are slowly but surely finding themselves purged from Wikipedia. Mistigram: The Mistigris computer arts collective was established in the jurisdiction served by area code 604, and its activities remain coordinated from that region today. We still lean on the numerical designation to describe our turf rather than geographical features or political boundaries because it describes the realm of telephony in which local cyberspace activity was conducted over dial-up modems, our native element, even if most of our contributors are not regularly calling in to exchanges in this area any more.

This logo celebrating our native area code 604 (or, more likely, its onetime IRC chatroom channel) is a specimen of the "Photoshop filter" variety of high resolution graphics that filled artpacks like weeds in the late '90s (taking over the role of the "lit" that served as the pack-filling weeds of the _early_ '90s 8), cooked up by one of our more adept specialists in the practice, Lord of Darkness (later aka ewerx). It serves to clearly communicate its thesis: "Hi! I'm in ... cyberspace. (But I'm connected via area code 604!)"

This piece was included in the MIST0897 artpack collection, released 26 years ago this month.

Area Code Day -  Area Codes first came into existence in the 1940’s in the laboratories of AT&T and Bell, slowly but surely this idea was expanded on and developed until it finally went into effect in 1947. It was called the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) and would solve the issue of not enough phone numbers for both the USA and Canada.

Forget-Me-Not Day - Reminds Americans of the sacrifices returning soldiers have made of body, blood, and limb. Created in 1921, the day reminds Americans that National Forget-Me-Not Day originally raised funds for services for returning injured soldiers. At the time, the existing hospitals were insufficient to support the numbers of returning disabled veterans. The day serves to honor all past and current United States Military veterans who bear the permanent scars of battle.

World NET Cancer Day -  Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are cancers that begin in neuroendocrine cells. These cells are similar to nerve cells as they send or receive messages within the nervous system. Some tumors grow slowly and others more quickly. Common symptoms include pain, lumps under the skin, fatigue, and weight loss.  Because these symptoms are similar to other illnesses, it is difficult to diagnose neuroendocrine tumors or NET cancer. Over 90 percent of all NET patients receive incorrect diagnoses. Initially, these patients get treated for the wrong disease. It’s not uncommon for NET patients to go up to 7 years with incorrect treatment. When doctors finally diagnose the disease correctly, the cancer has usually spread to other parts of the body. For these reasons, NET cancer awareness is of utmost importance.
