Mistigram: AdeptApril has drawn a stylized #ANSIart #telephone handset today in order to metaphorically convey that today is #AreaCode Day! Back when we were confined to the use of landlines and local calling plans, when telecommunications were conducted through #dialup connections over phone lines, the boundaries of these invisible territories demarcated specific manifestations of cyberspace that were beyond our reach. We make a big deal about having been established and rooted in area code #604 -- describing the province of British Columbia in Canada -- and coincidentally just a couple of days ago we wrote an extensive gloss of our home area code on a wiki we recently established, over at https://github.com/NicheInterests/mistfunk/wiki/area-code-604 , since entries pertaining to our corner of cyberspace are slowly but surely finding themselves purged from Wikipedia. If there are other subjects you'd like to see covered, please drop a line -- or feel free to send in an article yourself!

It always concerns me when I see a phone number written without an area code. Like, WHICH 555-5555 am I supposed to call? I know that stems from New Orleans only having one area code, so they assume you already know it, but I grew up in Houston, which is apparently getting a fifth area code soon, so it is kind of important that you include it.

Besides which, my personal phone still has a Houston area code, so I do still need to write it down.

Mistigram: The Mistigris computer arts collective was established in the jurisdiction served by area code 604, and its activities remain coordinated from that region today. We still lean on the numerical designation to describe our turf rather than geographical features or political boundaries because it describes the realm of telephony in which local cyberspace activity was conducted over dial-up modems, our native element, even if most of our contributors are not regularly calling in to exchanges in this area any more.

This logo celebrating our native area code 604 (or, more likely, its onetime IRC chatroom channel) is a specimen of the "Photoshop filter" variety of high resolution graphics that filled artpacks like weeds in the late '90s (taking over the role of the "lit" that served as the pack-filling weeds of the _early_ '90s 8), cooked up by one of our more adept specialists in the practice, Lord of Darkness (later aka ewerx). It serves to clearly communicate its thesis: "Hi! I'm in ... cyberspace. (But I'm connected via area code 604!)"

This piece was included in the MIST0897 artpack collection, released 26 years ago this month.

Now that I ended this chapter on a cliffhanger lol, DxP REWRITE is gonna take a 3-4 week break. While Chapters 1-2 pretty much wrote themselves, & I have a pretty good plan for Chapter 4 onward, I have some extra work & prep to do for Chapter 3. ;u;

However, I won’t be leaving you empty-handed - I have an intermission to take up the Sun / Wed slot in the meantime:
