These are accidental compositions that weren't meant to happen. I didn't compose them with the intention of fitting them in a circle, or even doing paintings just of hands. I was in the process of creating a larger piece, and in both cases, I witnessed something in the way the hands came together. Art often works that way. You just have to be ready when it moves you in a direction you weren't planning. "Waiting for God" is a painting of mine from 1996, based on a nightmare I had of a creature coming through the floor and attacking me. It was a reflection of my anxiety and the uncertainty I felt after moving to the Washington DC area. As well as my my loss of faith. This is made clearer if you know that the figure is me. ( I had long hair then ) I painted myself waiting, – in limbo – between the world beyond the window frame and the one underground.
