General Nova Chance ♡
week 11! "a fire aligned uprising has gathered at a castle of the guiding claws.. but the head councilman has sent their best, his top general.. nova chance. she is infamous for her ruthless efficiency. as a very powerful water bender, a demigod on her mother's side, she may be able to wash a small army away on her own, but it may only spark more uprisings, so she has her father's army stay back, and goes out to meet them alone. she holds a terrifying reputation, and all of the fire aligned know what she would do if they attacked now. she reasons with the uprising, and intimidates them.. she makes concessions, but not many. just enough to get them to back down and disperse.. she wont be so forgiving next time" aa, heres week 11! took about 4 hours, and has 140 unique color values. im sorry its not that great.. my head wasnt in the game ><. anyways, thank you for checking out my art! i hope you have a wonderful week ♡

The British soldier's morale was fed not only by patriotism (`Your Country needs you') but by the unique regimental spirit that has been the envy of other armies down to the present day: one cannot let the Regiment down.

Dudeman McBaldy here represents the rank and file of specifically the Sirronan army. First he puts on his base uniform, which is what they wear around the barracks if they're not actually training. Then he'll put on his armour, which is all in bronze because Kazin hasn't figured out iron yet and like hell Raykin's letting them in on that tech. In poorer provinces, the leaf mail will instead be leather with rivets. Next he'll put on his tunic, for which the single, solitary purpose is so I don't have to draw that much leaf mail every time I draw the princes :))) This will also be where he puts on his Family Colours, which are important even when in uniform. They'll either go over or under the belt, and often army dudes will have a second set of Colours for their uniform, which will cut off at the same length as their tunic. Finally, he'll strap his breastplate over his Colours and he's ready to arm himself to the teeth.
Rank and file get a bow and quiver, a wooden shield edged in bronze and a straight, bronze kris about half a metre long, so significantly shorter than the almost a metre Raykinian blades. Making the wiggles in the kris blade takes great skill, making them more pricey, and keeping them sharp and polished takes more time and effort than a straight one, so the rank and file will most often have a straight blade. The more highly-ranked a dude is, the more wiggles he'll have on his blade.
Next is all the colours of the provincial uniforms! Haysyd is pov so they can't afford to dye their army's uniforms in anything more than ochre :( They and Sissillya have similar colours but they're on opposite sides of the empire and aren't likely to ever be at war with each other, so it's fine. Sijaaz is up in the mountains on the Llayan border, so they get grey rock and gumleaf colours. Sirrona also in the bush, so they get desaturated blue-green of gumleaves. All the bright/deep green ones are tropical because dark green leaves. The others I just gave colours so they're not going to be confused with their neighbours, with whom they're probably at war, or have been in the past.
Finally army ranks, as displayed on their breastplates. I used to have them colour-coded with steel but that doesn't work anymore cos they don't have steel, ahaha. So it's all in stripes. The Commanding Circle (of whom there are 5-9 in an army, depending on the size of the army) and the general get theirs gold plated, and everyone from colonel up gets silver in their stripes.
Additionally, and not shown here because Dudeman McBaldy is just a dude, royalty gets all the metal on their armour plated gold. Their breastplate has a peacock feather engraved into it, and another peacock feather embroidered onto the breast of their tunic and shirt. They have no power inherant with being royalty, but you still wouldn't want to piss them off. They're still related to the queen, y'know. Here are my princes to demonstrate this:

Day 23: Fav costume
My favourite costumes, I think, were the uniforms worn by the Greek soldiers. Utilitarian, cohesive, and easily recognisable, they felt the most well-placed outfits for me.
We also got to see how each soldier adjusted their uniform, fitting with their personality. Top buttons undone, shirts removed for sparring practice, untucked vs tucked shirts, their let's face it, they were leg warmers and how far up they were pulled.
There was a discussion between fans regarding symbols that Laocoön would sometimes draw on the soldiers as he prophesised their arrival. People were wondering what those symbols represented. We knew which was referring to which soldier, as Laocoön would mark Agamemnon and Patroclus in the method in which they died. A head wound for Agamemnon, a heart wound for Patroclus. But why the symbols?
It was then that we spotted that each soldier had the same symbol on their coats. An insignia determining their rank. The details that, not only the costume design had put in, but that the performers picked up on and reflected across other roles, was always so stunning.
One of my favourite quiet but desperately emotional moments of the show was when Milton Lopes as Watchman (the only Watchman to wear a significantly different uniform to the rest of the soldiers, a boiler suit instead of the trousers, shirt, and braces,) returned to Mycenae after the invasion, and in the secrecy of the crate room, tried on one of their coats to see how it would feel to be considered a real soldier.
As he would button the coat (and in summer months, one of the shirts instead of the heavy wool coat) Watchman would catch sight of his hand in the mirror, stop in the sad realisation that he would never be like them, and slowly remove the coat again.
This was a scene that only Milton ever did, and his use of his symbrachydactyly to highlight Watchman's emotional story and his desperation to be considered the same as the other soldiers, was just beautifully devastating. That a performer was able to showcase their own takes on the stories of these characters, whether that be through limb difference, gender difference, or something else, was what made these characters so fascinating and watchable again and again.
I personally preferred Milton's Watchman and the female watchmen to the male watchmen. All of the performers were exceptionally talented and did the role justice, but I always found more story in the watchmen where there was something separating them from the other soldiers in the Greek army.
Also, I would like to give a costume shout out to Askalaphos - purely for a single instance in which I was watching Timothy Bartlett play the role, and his neon collar was not lit. He was behind the counter, and the radio was silent and not working. Tim, in a strange and wonderful performance I came to associate with him, panicked and began hitting the radio, trying to make it work. Nothing he did was having any effect. He followed the cable down the wall, disappearing underneath the counter. He clearly found the plug was unplugged from the wall, and plugged it in. The radio sprang to life, and as Tim stood up, so proud of himself for fixing the radio, his neon collar was also lit up.
It was such a perfectly weird and delightful use of his costuming to accentuate what was already a wonderful performance.
