12 (ghibli) days until the end of classes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the last month of classes is always the most chaotic for me. My routines are completly lost, and i'm always behind all my classes, no motivation to study nor to rest, it's absolute chaos.
So I'll be trying to make those last 12 days not be wasted. And to make it a little bit more fun, I'll make those days on theme with ghibli films (coincidentally, I've only watched 12 of them as well). So
Day 1 - Spirited Away🍜 Day 2 - Kiki's Delivery Service 🐈‍⬛ Day 3 - The Secret World of Arriety 🪷 Day 4 - Ocean Waves 🌊 Day 5 - From up on Poppy Hill 📝 Day 6 - Whisper of the Heart🎻 Day 7 - My Neighbor Totoro 🌱 Day 8 - Grave of the fireflies will change this one for Weathering with you so it's not sad 💧 Day 9 - Wind Rises 📐 Day 10 - Howl's Moving Castle 🔥 Day 11 - Castle in the Sky 🏰 Day 12 - Ponyo 🐟
Basically I just want to make those days the more cozy, productive, but also chill possible. I'll also try to stay way less time on my phone and more engaging on my hobbies. And just have a positive mindset and kinda romanticize my life!
And that's it, i'll start tomorrow (monday), since today I'm still totally dead bc of the anime con yesterday LOL

11. castle in the sky the world of nausicaa is leavened with a bit of fun—a swift of joy—a loose of light—the first ghibli—explodes onto the scene to vie for child hearts child eyes child minds—in sky the castle a cake crumbling between child fingers

Independent Excursion #1: Studio Ghibli Museum and Park
On May 10, some friends and I went to the Studio Ghibli Museum, which is outside of Tokyo. We purchased reservation tickets a month ahead of time, so we showed up at our given time and waited in the queue. Once we entered the museum, we were not allowed to take any photos inside. We also received our ticket stub for the short film we would watch later. The main exhibition on the bottom floor of the museum is dedicated to the process of creating an animated film. There were sketches of Ghibli characters, stills and screen grabs of Ghibli films, and a variety of interactive ways to engage with the exhibit. My favorite ones involved rolling the film of a scene from “Spirited Away”; by adjusting your hand’s speed you could adjust the speed of the animation. On the second floor, there is a big Cat Bus for children to play on, and on the roof, there is a life size robot from “Castle in the Sky” that you can take pictures with. The rooftop is filled with lush greenery and vegetation. After getting souvenirs and gifts at the Mamma Aiuto Shop, we had some treats at the Straw Hat Café. We ended by going to the Saturn Theatre and watching a short, 13-minute film. It was a mini-sequel to “My Neighbor Totoro”. I enjoyed watching it with Japanese audio, but there were no English subtitles. I usually watch Ghibli movies with the English audio, so it was fun to try and follow along with the plot without any subtitles or audio I could understand.
On May 23, we went to Ghibli Park in Aichi. We arrived later to our reservation than expected, so we did not have enough time to visit all of the different areas surrounding the Ghibli Warehouse, where we spent the most time. We browsed the various shops, and a couple of my friends checked out their food options outside. I was able to see and take pictures in a recreation of Arrietty’s house from “The Secret World of Arrietty” as well as the garden, the entrance to her home. We walked by Children’s Town which replicates where Studio Ghibli is located in Tokyo. We also walked through the main exhibition which walks you through famous scenes in many of the Ghibli movies, and you can take pictures at each scene! Besides the Grand Warehouse, we were able to briefly visit the Valley of Witches. We were able to go into a replica of Kiki’s attic room from “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and see Howl’s Castle and Sophie’s hat shop from “Howl’s Moving Castle”.

Academic Reflection:
Something that stood out to me was the stark contrast between the museum and the park. The museum was more informational regarding the animation process, while the park was more of a photo op area to immerse oneself into various cinematic universes. At first, I felt the museum could use more engaging and interactive elements, but after reading “Anime tourism: discursive construction and reception of the Studio Ghibli Art Museum”, I realized how the park and museum are supposed to provide completely different experiences. The small nods to Ghibli in the design and decoration of the museum add a more subtle immersive element compared to outwardly blunt decoration elements and life size scenes at the Studio Ghibli Museum. I also learned through my reading that the museum was designed by Hayao Miyazaki with the goal of making the museum itself an exhibit.
Additionally, although it was a journey and a half to get to both the museum and the park, I believe that their geographic isolation from major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto serve to emphasize the strong connection between Studio Ghibli and the natural environment. Reading the following excerpt by Denison (550) furthered my belief:
“The association between the park and the museum purposefully mirrors themes within many of Miyazaki and Takahata’s Ghibli films, which frequently entertain pro-environment motifs and plot lines (McCarthy 1999; Napier 2005). The landscape around the Art Museum therefore works not just as a marker of its distinctiveness as a place of anime tourism, it further marks the Art Museum as geographically separate from the urban norm of Tokyo. This in turn reinforces the importance of nature to the Ghibli brand of filmmaking, and the location of the museum in Mitaka helps to situate the Art Museum as a cultural geographic response to previous anime tourism sites located within the centre of Tokyo.”

New AU Idea!
So this is based on a thing I did because I was bored with my child Dave AI. Basically I decided to put him on the cat bus and take him to a spirit forest and thought it would be cool to imply that the reason he fits in so well there and not anywhere else is because he’s some kind of creepy lizard fae creature. It was mostly just me reminiscing over watching Studio Ghibli, and then I thought… what if there was a Studio Ghibli DSAF fusion AU.
So my idea for this AU is for it to play like a combination of my three favourite Studio Ghibli movies in plot, those being My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Ponyo (a bit less of Ponyo and using My Neighbour Totoro as the main framework because it’s what fits best. Also I must mention I adore Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howls Moving Castle, I just prefer these ones, and these fit the story I’m thinking of better.)
So it would have child protagonists like all 3 of those movies, and would mostly focus on Jack. Löng post btw explaining the general plot. Please read it over though and tell me who you want me to design first and if you have any ideas to improve the AU! <:
My idea for the plot is that like in My Neighbour Totoro, Jack, Dee and Peter have just moved to a new neighbourhood. Dee is exited because she’s an adorable little child, is underrated as hell, and I love her. Peter is distant from the rest of the family because he’s nearly an adult and is upset about moving and is angsting. And Jack hates the idea of moving away from his old friends, and is kinda left alone to deal with it.
The new house is a bit of a mess as it’s really old and hasn’t been lived in for a long time, Dee is exited and is constantly exploring the forest, Peter just kinda stays in his own room and ignores everyone, and Jack just kinda doesn’t know what to do.
Dee starts talking about seeing spirits early on, but no one believes her.
Jack gets mad and blows up at his parents at dinner one day, before running off into the woods, he travels into a very deep, dark part of the woods, followed by his siblings, and then is stopped by Dave, who is a fae spirit around Jack’s age, or at least who seems to be as spirit ages are unclear, he’s probably older than that but is considered a child by spirit terms and mentally and physically is one. Dave is immediately hostile and threatens Jack’s life if he gets any closer. Jack asks why and Dave explains that he’s protecting the grave of his master, the rot king (Henry), until he comes home. I should also note that Dave is masked (it’s a rabbit mask because of course the fuck it is) and cloaked at this point and his actual appearance isn’t shown until later.
Jack tries to talk more but Dave tries to kill him, just as he does Jack’s siblings appear. until he’s pulled aside by another spirit just in time. This spirit is Harry, who is a black bear spirit which initially scares Jack but he quickly realizes he’s a friend. Harry takes Jack “somewhere safe” because he claims the forest is not safe for mortals at night because that’s when the vestiges of the rot king come out and seek mortal souls to pull into the void to feed to their master. Dave isn’t technically an actual vestige, and does not have the ability to deliver souls to Henry. The reason for this is because being the sort of evil spirit Henry was, he commanded an army of lesser evil spirits who could only come out at night which greatly limited his power, so when he found Dave, he used Dave to be his servant during the day because as a neutral being of the forest, Dave was able to be out during both day and night.
Harry takes the Kennedy’s into his home inside a large tree, apparently recognizing Dee and scolding her for not listening when he said not to go out at night, where we are introduced to the other bear spirits/phone guys, Steven is a red panda which while technically not actually a bear I think fits, Jake is a grizzly who lost his cub, Roger is a sun bear, and Rebecca (no I didn’t forget about her), is a sloth bear.
The bears explain that they serve the forest king (the real Fredbear), a golden bear spirit that has dominion over all the forest during the day, and once had it during the night too. But then the rot king rose to power and for a time, he ruled both, until the forest king managed to banish him to the void with the help of an unstable ally, the spirit of wolftooth peak (Blackjack) who is a giant dark spirit taking the form of a wolf. The spirit of wolftooth peak however betrayed the forest king and refused to kill the rot king, in favour of torturing him for having previously destroyed the spirit of his sister by destroying her peak. This allowed the rot king to continue his reign from a distance during the night, so the forest king employed the 5 lesser bear spirits to protect the forest at night by rescuing any mortals that enter and fighting off the vestiges. The siblings were lucky that Dave stopped them before attacking actually because if they had come any closer to the grave, the dark magic would have put up a barrier the bears couldn’t cross.
The bears request that the siblings help them defeat the rot king once and for all before he regains his power and escapes, an act he’s close to doing. Peter claims this is above their capabilities, and wants to leave to protect his siblings, but Dee is having none of it, as she’s already bonded with many of the spirits and knows they’ll be hurt if the rot king rises to power. Knowing they can’t deter her, Peter and Jack make a promise to help the spirits by purifying corrupt spirits, an act done by helping them remember what they were before.
The kids go back home for awhile then, to their parents dismay as they had worried about them before, go out o the forest around noon, promising to be back by dusk. They meet up with the bears, and for the first time for all of them but Dee, meet the forest king. He thanks them for joining his cause and explains that the corrupted spirits are ones taken by the rot king and his vestiges and either forcefully corrupted, or in cases that are much more dangerous, manipulated into joining, he also talks to Dee like a close friend, and so does she, making it clear that Dee is also the one who knows the most about spirits and magic because of her friendship with the forest king.
Steven is the youngest of the bear spirits in this and has napoleon syndrome, so the other bears send him with the siblings to help him grow up, something he’s very unhappy with. Steven ends up riding on Peter’s shoulder for most of the story because he likes being tall and Peter is the tallest sibling.
The siblings and Steven are told to seek out a corrupted fawn spirit (Jacob Adams), Peter is given a magic staff (which Steven is immediately rude about him not holding right), Jack gets a sword, and Dee gets a healing wand. The fawn spirit has turned into a stag with long pointed horns, long legs, and sharp fangs. This battle almost ends in utter defeat as the group are terrible at working together as each just tries to do their own thing, eventually Jack manages to pull them together and they purify the spirit, turning it back into a fawn. The fawn thanks them and they help him get back home to his family, exploring the spirit town while they are there.
The next day they spend the early morning finally working together cleaning their new home, and their parents, who are still worried, decide things must be alright as the siblings are getting along better.
They meet back up with Steven, and are sent out to deal with 3 spirits this time, the 3 were friends and were corrupted together. The spirits in question are a nine tailed fox (Foxy, who both Steven and Peter agree sounds awesome), a phoenix (Chica), and a jackalope (Bonnie). Freddy will not show up yet, and rather than having the toys and the standard animatronics as two separate groups I decided to do something else.
They arrive at a long abandoned observatory, and at first don’t see anything, exept for the noticeable fact that every surface is covered in thick vines. Jack tries to cut the vines, but suddenly, they all come to life and start moving, a twisted and mangled fox head appears as do it’s hundreds of viney limbs, this spirit design will be inspired by a combination of mangle, and withered foxy. As the nine tailed and now 900 limbed fox spirit comes to life, so too do the other two spirits arrive, a flightless cockatrice (a combination of toy and withered Chica), and the blind centipede hare (toy and withered Bonnie). These corrupted spirits are incredibly hard to fight on their own but things get worse from here.
Having been alerted of the purification of the fawn, Dave and a corrupted bear monster based on the onikuma arrive to fight as well. The siblings barely make it out with their lives and Dee is taken by the onikuma.
Peter immediately quits when he returns, after demanding to know why no one ever told them about the onikuma, but Jack is sure Dee is still alive and refuses to quit, causing the brothers to fight. The onikuma is revealed to be a 6th bear guardians who was willingly corrupted and they didn’t mention because he normally stays in the bog.
Their parents refuse to let them go out again, and Dee is declared missing. Jack sneaks out at the dead of night, knowing how dangerous it is but going anyway, and he finds the tree. The bears are horrified, especially since he got quite injured by evil spirits on the way. He demands to know where Dee was taken and the bears reveal she’s likely been trapped at the bottom of the bog, which is a sort of nightmare pocket world the evil bear spirit keeps his child victims in. Jack asks how he can free her, and the bears reveal that the only way to get someone out of the bog is with fairy magic. Jack asks where he can find a fairy. The bears tell him that won’t be possible. There’s only one fairy in the forest, but this fairy is out of reach to them, all the others were sealed in the very tree the bears live in by the rot king, and as long as the king still lives, the fairies will never escape.
Jack gets frustrated and asks why this fairy is out of reach, and the bears explain that he’s already met the fairy, it tried to kill him when they first met, Jack figures out that the bears are telling him DAVE is a fairy. Jack is confused and horrified, he’d always been told fairies were tiny and cute, Dave is threatening and hostile, and around his own size. The bears explain that fairies are neutral tricksters, capable of changing size at will, and that this particular fairy was taken in, manipulated, and mutilated by the rot king who cut off Dave’s wings. He’s too devoted to ever be shaken from his goal.
Jack declares he’s going to purify Dave. The bears do not like that idea, and Steven refuses to come claiming it to be suicide. Jack claims he has to do it for his sister.
Jack gets his sword and goes out to fight Dave alone. He finds him sitting at the massive obelisk that is the rot king’s grave and seemingly praying to it.
When Jack approaches he immediately arms himself and demands to know why Jack is here. Jack claims he’s here to purify him, and Dave laughs in his face and then teases him about coming out on his own.
With that the fight begins, Dave removes his cloak to move faster which reveals that his clothes barely fit on him because of how thin he is (he was malnourished by Henry, and only leaves to eat once a week for 3 hours.) Dave far outpaces Jack, but he continues to be able to defend his attacks until dawn breaks, and during the fight Dave’s mask is knocked off outing him not only as a lizard boi, but also shows some of his scars from his abuse at the hands of Henry.
After a few more minutes Jack manages to get through to him and Dave breaks down crying, to which Jack comforts him. Purifying Dave causes the mask and cloak to turn to dust as those were the symptoms of his corruption which is a bit weird but I think it has to do with some of the other unique aspects of his situation. Also I’m not gonna make Dave’s lizardyness be his corruption because lizard boi is best boi, and he can’t just grow his wings back.
Jack decides to stop lying to his parents about where Dee is, and comes home with Dave, who may or may not have developed a crush on Jack when he comforted him.
After some convincing Jack manages to make his parents aware of everything so they can help, and convince Peter to help again.
Setting off with Peter, Steven, and Dave, Jack goes to the bog of the onikuma. After a long and difficult fight which included the onikuma summoning the other 3 corrupted spirits from before, they manage to win and purify all the spirits, setting Dee free with Dave’s magic.
Dee is acting like she never left as she has forgotten ever doing so alongside the 10 other kids locked down there with her.
The group returns to the forest king who despite being proud of everything achieved, such as Dave and the onikuma’s purification and Dee’s release from the bog, is rather grave, as he says it’s too late to stop the rot king’s returns.
The group asks if there’s absolutely no way to stop him, and the forest king admits there’s one, it would be to have the assistance of the spirit of wolftooth peak. The forest king also reveals that if the rot king dies, he does too, as the rot king is a part of him that split off. The rot king can survive without him in a weakened state, but he would die if the rot king were to die.
Somewhat conflicted, the group travels up the mountain, meeting the spirit of the peak. The giant wolf yells at them and fights them for their arrogance but is eventually convinced the rot king must die, and this isn’t what his sister would have wanted.
the group, now with the wolf spirit, travel into the void and meet the rot king face to face. He’s a being of pure decay in this who himself is rotting. Major nowhere king vibes. In an epic final confrontation all the characters but Jack are defeated, like in the game, but Jack manages to bring them all back by channeling energy through his sword.
The rot king is finally defeated. And thus begins the epilogue in which the Kennedy family vow that all future generations will protect the forest, the wolf of the peak finds peace and redemption, Dave decides to give up some of his power so he can grow up alongside Jack for totally not gay reasons, Steven is crowned as the new forest king and everyone lives happily ever after.
It’s a weird AU but I think it could be cool and I might make a fanfic about it, please give feedback and advice and as I’ve said, tell me who to draw first! <:

10 Comfort Shows / Movies
Got tagged by @emeraldhazeart to do one of these? Thanks. c: Likewise I'm not going to do these in any order because I'd have to think a bit harder about it, but I'll try not to list (all of) my favourite movies of all time and focus on stuff I find comforting. 🌺
The Care Bears Adventure In Wonderland - I have to mention this one because I rewatched and rewinded it so many times as a child that the videotape got worn. Rewatched it again recently and realised I can still heavily relate to the film's 'Alice', so it left a lasting impression. Psps, this one's up on Youtube for free...
Tumblr media
2. Come Outside - Another show from my childhood, which I haven't gone back to rewatch. It's sort of like a kid's version of how it's made with a sweet auntie figure and a mischievous but cute dog.
Tumblr media
3. Wander Over Yonder - Okay so this is just leaking into my favourite shows, but I really like WOY. It's funny and visually stunning and Wander's optimism can be infectious.
Tumblr media
4. Kiki's Delivery Service - I could put a lot of Ghibli films on this list, like My Neighbor Totoro or Ponyo or The Cat Returns, but I'm choosing Kiki because it spoke the clearest to me about being in a difficult place and sharing kindness with others - and without having as intense themes as something like Howl's Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away, which I also like, but for different reasons.
Tumblr media
5. Pokemon 4Ever - Hnngh I didn't even watch this one as a child. I watched it for the first time, like, last year. But it's really special and I love Celebi I can't even begin to describe it. Maybe it's because it's got that Pokémon Colosseum thing going on, I don't know.
Tumblr media
6. Beauty and the Beast - Uh favourite Disney movie. Again I have a few of these. It good. Next
Tumblr media
7. Come Dine With Me - I used to watch it a lot. I like cooking competition trash TV, sorry... This only wins out over Cake Wars because I'm pretty sure I saw more of it, but I love that too.
Tumblr media
8. Poirot - One does not generally think of murder when one thinks of comfort, but this basically encompasses any and all murder mystery shows my grandma has playing on the TV when I go to her house. I haven't seen Poirot for a while, but I think he's my favourite of the main chracters I see on these things - and I don't get as riled up as I do while watching Doc Martin, Heartbeat or Father Brown!
Tumblr media
9. The Way Of The Househusband - I think I watched all of what was available of this in one sitting when it came out, and I haven't really returned to it since ... but that's a lot more than I do for other shows. You've probably seen snippets of the manga on Tumblr. It's simple, it's one running joke, but it's a good one.
Tumblr media
10. Wallace and Gromit - All episodes / films of Wallace and Gromit have a few intense and scary scenes for young children! But I would still watch them for comfort. There's just something reassuring and familiar about this man and his dog.
Tumblr media

I feel like @yaspup9000 would enjoy this one so have a tag! Umm and if anyone else wants to do it I tag you as well ok!!

Rambling about the Ghibli movies I’ve seen
1. Howl’s Moving Castle
Tumblr media
This was my first ever Ghibli movie! And I loved it and I still love it. It was like this amazing discovery and I was hooked on the animation, the character design and the story. There were funny moments, thoughtful moments and even scary ones. I remember thinking Calcifer was hilarious and I watched it dubbed in Spanish and Howl’s voice is the same as Castle/Nathan Fillion, but the VA does a great job. It’s one of my favorites, probably the most.
2. From up on Poppy Hill
Tumblr media
Watched it in English and I’ll probably rewatch it that way just for Anton Yelchin. It was yet another surprise. Has a good tone and music and the story is okay until the weird SPOILER “are they siblings?” part END SPOILER. Yep, I get it was because of the war and all that. Anyway, it’s on my top list. Also, I ended up expecting a kiss or hug or something but then I read Ghibli doesn’t portray relationships that way... and I’m okay with that.
3. The Secret World of Arriety
Tumblr media
This movie was so pretty! Well, all of them are pretty, but I really liked the production design in this one. And my first time watching a Ghibli movie in Japanese (Your Name was my first movie in Japanese and I had rewatched Howl’s... with subs before, but you know). It feels like a fairytale and it has great music.
4. Spirited Away
Tumblr media
I guess this is some sort of Alice in Wonderland Ghibli version. And, oh, my, is it bonkers. Lots of creativity here with the character designs, the story is great but it had a lot of WTH moments and I really wanted them to reunite after all that.
5. Kiki’s Delivery Service
Tumblr media
This one was a little boring. It looked promising, I love witches and the premise is interesting, but it dragged a little, the boy is so annoying and my favorite character is the cat, so...
6. Ponyo
Tumblr media
The Little Mermaid, Ghibli version (btw, I got nothing against retelling fairytales, because they do it in such a creative way). This was the opposite: weird start, got me hooked. Ponyo is a delightful character. Between my favorites.
7. Princess Mononoke
Tumblr media
Loved the idea and the beginning, got weirder and weirder. I get it could be a product of its time, but the story would benefit from a little more work. Although I liked the spirits design and it obviously inspired the creators of ATLA, especially in the creature design for Korra.
8. Castle in the Sky
Tumblr media
Another product of its time in terms of pacing and the strange obsession of grown men towards a little girl. It was... nice. Reminded me a lot of Atlantis, so I guess Disney took some notes. The design of the city was good and the lore interesting. And the boy got me chuckling in the action scenes, doing all that barefoot.
9. My Neighbor Totoro
Tumblr media
Talking about cute. This movie is so simple and yet so good. The tiny Totoro has to be my favorite Ghibli creature and it has a lot of charm.
10. Whisper of the Heart
Tumblr media
While I usually hate those kind of endings (love has had me waiting enough), it made me feel hopeful instead of sad. Another movie with a slow pace but a really long scene is just following a cat, so of course it was going to get on the top of my list. Is quite relatable as a writer and I sure hoped I’ve had (or had now) that support from my parents. The scenes of the book look great and even though I already knew what was going to happen from 5 minutes in, I didn’t even care.

What's Your Favorite Ghibli Movie? | Korean Vocabulary List
We all love Ghibli movies. And probably everyone has that one movie which they feel particularly pulled towards or which has the most (nostalgic..?) sentiment for them.
Being led by my own personal nostalgic sentiments, I've been meaning to rewatch ‘Nausicaa From the Valley of the Wind’ but this time dubbed/subbed in Korean. I thought knowing the plot beforehand would be more effective for language learning than jumping straight into a movie I haven't previously watched and familiarized myself with. When I was trying to search it up on the internet, I figured it will surely have '나우시카' somewhere in the title but had no clue as for the rest of it... Thankfully, the search engine algorithms are indeed very smart and helped me find what I was searching for anyways haha.
Yeah, well, and later here I am thanks to my curiosity to know every single title of Ghibli movies in Korean 😸 Half of them are pretty straight-forward and intuitive while another half offers some good new vocab 😼 Most importantly – now you'll know how to say in Korean which Ghibli movie is your favorite!
I didn’t translate names, grammar points nor repeating words twice. However, I did add literal translations when the title differs from the English one.

Hayao Miyazaki has been the guy I thought of from the top of my head who knows how to write well rounded female protagonists. He doesn’t care about marketing to the otaku audience. He cares about making a good story with multi-dimensional characters. What is your favorite Ghibli film?
You would think that given the cultural behemoth that is Ghibli, several Shounen mangakas would've gotten a grip and treated their female characters with more respect, but I guess we were wrong. Miyazaki was right when he said that "anime was a mistake"; they just keep proving his point!
Anyways, my favourite movies are:
Spirited Away (my very first Ghibli movie ever);
Kiki's Delivery Service;
Howl's Moving Castle;
Pom-Poko;
Ponyo;
My Neighbor Totoro.

Assignment 1 - Industry Model - Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese animator, director, producer, screenwriter, author, and manga artist.
Over the years, he has created extraordinary, magical and whimsical worlds for both children and adults to lose themselves within.
Miyazaki is a genius, and his films succeed on many levels – technical, emotional, intellectual, philosophical, artistic, and political.
He is a co-founder of one of the biggest animation studios in the world, Studio Ghibli,
Miyazaki has directed masterpieces like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke which have earned him critical acclaim as well as immense popularity on a global scale.
In 2003, Miyazaki won the best-animated film Oscar, for the spooky and surreal Spirited Away.
Tumblr media
Early years
Hayao Miyazaki was born on 5th of January, 1941, in Bunkyo, Tokyo.
He is the 2nd Oldest of 4 brothers.
Father was director of his uncle's factory, Miyazaki Airplane, which made rudders for fighter planes, during WW2
He constantly liked to draw, especially planes.
His childhood dream was to become a manga artist.
During his 3rd year in High School, Miyazaki's interest in animation was sparked by “Panda and the Magic Serpent (1958)”, Japan's first feature-length animated film in color.
Miyazaki attended University in the department of political economy, majoring in Japanese Industrial Theory.
He joined the "Children's Literature Research Club", as it was the "closest thing back then to a comics club".
Around this time, he also drew manga; he never completed any stories but accumulated thousands of pages of the beginnings of stories.
Early Work
These are the studios he worked in;
In 1963, he began his career, working in television at Toei Animation as an in-between artist.
The first large-scale animation studio in Japan, between 1963 and 1971.
Following are some examples of his animation in early work;
1963 Watchdog Bow Wow
1971 Lupin III - Series
1984 Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind
He became chief secretary of Toei's labor union in 1964.
Miyazaki later worked as chief animator, concept artist, and scene designer on The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun (1968).
Miyazaki’s first trip abroad was an important source of inspiration, and his great love for the European landscapes were integrated into these shows.
Following are some examples of his Manga in early work;
1969 Puss in Boots
1972 Animal Treasure Island
1998-1999 Tigers Covered With Mud
Studio Ghibli
Tumblr media
Studio Ghibli was founded with Miyazaki’s friends and colleagues Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki in 1985.
Ghibli halted production in 2014 when Miyazaki announced his retirement, but reopened in 2017 when he decided to go back to work on How Do You Live?, which is currently some three years away from completion.
Miyazaki’s career as a feature-film director at Studio Ghibli:
Castle in the Sky (1986),
My Neighbor Totoro (1988),
Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989),
Porco Rosso (1992),
and later works Princess Mononoke (1997),
Spirited Away (2001),
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004),
Ponyo (2008)
and The Wind Rises (2013).
Tumblr media
All of Miyazaki’s films are aimed at children or young teenagers. But he makes his films resonate with adults as well as children by keeping the emotions authentic.
Miyazaki does not underestimate the intelligence of children, or their powers of understanding. Characters in his films, they experience loss and sadness as well as joy, despair as well as hope, in a way that is relatable for both children and adults.
Miyazaki draws heavily on Japanese landscapes and culture, although the humanism of his films means they can be appreciated by international viewers. He loves the country’s woodlands (which he says contain more bugs than those of Europe), and he and his team made field trips to forests to research films like My Neighbour Totoro.
Tumblr media
Themes and approach
Miyazaki tends to focus on female heroines, and his work has a feminist angle.
Miyazaki says he likes to create female characters because, he does not want his films to reflect only his own experiences.
Heroines that are powerful women in control of their own fates, and the destinies of whole cities and countries.
Flying is an activity which Miyazaki loves to animate, and it is a big theme of his films. Miyazaki’s father designed planes, and Ghibli shares its name with an Italian aircraft manufacturer.
Tumblr media
Miyazaki likes the connection between creative design and engineering that goes into aeroplane design, and thinks it is similar to the process of making animated films.
Miyazaki’s approach to animation is based on Japanese anime, but is uniquely his own. Each of his films looks different, and each uses a unique colour scheme and library of shapes. His skill at depicting human movement has played a big part in his success.
Instead of writing the scripts and then adding the animation later – the modern Hollywood way, he focuses on the visual storyboards and then constructs the stories around the images he creates. Miyazaki’s focus on visual storytelling has allowed his imagination free reign.
