1: What book did you last finish? When was that?
ooooh my god I finished Gutenberg Elegies in February and even that was skimming the afterword. I’ve read so few complete books so far this year.
2: What are you currently reading?
I was burning out on An Experiment in Criticism so I’ve switched to In Cold Fear which is about the book ban debates over Catcher in the Rye. I have a bunch of different short story and poetry collections lying around and that’s sucking up most of my reading time.
10: Sci-Fi or fantasy? Why?
Tumblr media
why should the people have to decide between two genres, both of which offer rich experiences? I am asking Washington DC and the publishing firms why they have pushed this unfair choice on decent folk everywhere. (I usually default to scifi cos it’s what I grew up with more of -_- )
15: What book changed your life?
no joke I think it might have to be when I read King Lear for my last year of high school. that or Demian were books that really got to me and felt world-expanding at a time when I could really get hit with that. I read Cat’s Cradle and Slaughterhouse Five right around that time, too. The other contenders are Dinotopia when I was really young, or GUT Symmetries as I was dropping out of college.
34: List five OTPs
I’m… gonna have to cheat here and list five romances that really got to me… Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, Estraven and Genly Ai, Sue Trinder and Maud Lilly/Nam Sook-Hee and Izumi Hideko, Anthy and Utena, and Otonashi Kyoko and Godai Yusaku
35: Name a book you consider to be terribly underrated
Ashizuri Aquarium by Panpanya or Bruno Schulz’s collected stories, maybe not terribly underrated but Schulz is definitely disappearing off the radar for anyone who doesn’t have an interest in Polish/Jewish literature, and Panpanya’s never going to make it onto the radar of anyone who’s not interested in *weird* comics. I could probably put down loads of leftist artists who get left out of The Leftist Artists canon, too.
47: What do you do to get out of a reading slump?
I’m super lenient with myself on this kind of thing, honestly. I’ve figured out that I pretty much always have a hanker for poetry, essays, short stories, so I like to keep that kind of stuff at hand. a novel that I hate but that has a quick plot and quickly read prose will help me build up a lot of steam. honestly had not heard of the idea of a book slump until I spent a sick-week bopping around book-youtube and it still seems kind odd to me. I don’t fret a lot about not reading
50: Why do you love to read?
I have this pretty vivid memory of sitting in my high school library during some lunch reading some book in a four volume series, you know some 4000 page thing and this guy come up to me and told me how much he loved the book and I would definitely love the series, and honestly that’s the strongest memory I have of the book. so much of reading ends up being talking to other people about what you’ve read, suggesting new things to read, forming relationships off a mutual interest — and then so much of it is all private and will only ever be private, all the little aha moments, some long connection you’ve drawn because of some disparate things you’ve read, asking yourself ‘in what spirit and in what way do I read this specific thing?’ all kinds of things
