What Is The Durga Puja And How Is It Celebrated?

In the month of September-October when the season ‘Sarat' brings a bunch of white cloud in blue sky the whole Bengal celebrates ‘Durgapuja, Bengali's biggest festival. Durga Ashtami is celebrated on 13th February 2019 of this Magha Navratri. On this day the weapons of Goddess Durga are worshiped and hence it is known as ‘Astra Puja’. It is also called ‘Virashtami’ due to the display of arms and other forms of martial arts. Devotees offer prayers to Goddess Durga and keep a strict fast to seek Her divine blessings.

On this day, devotees get up early in the morning and make several offerings to Goddess in the form of flowers, chandan and dhoop. In some places, Kumari Puja is also performed. Young girls aged between 6-12 years are worshipped as the Kanya (virgin) form of Goddess Durga. Special ‘Naivedyam’ is prepared for offering to the Goddess.

Fasting is an important ritual of the day. The observer of Durga Ashtami Vrat abstains from eating or drinking all through the day. The Vrat is observed to acquire spiritual gains and seek the blessings of Goddess Durga. Some devotees keep the fast by drinking only milk or eating fruits. Consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol is strictly prohibited on this day. The observer of the Vrat must sleep on the floor and keep away from the comforts and luxuries.

In some regions of western India there is also a custom of sowing barley seeds. After the seeds reach a height of 3-5 inches they are offered to the Goddess and later distributed among all family members.

Devotees chant various Devi mantras on this day, read Durga Chalisa and also the Durga Ashtami Vrat katha. Shakti temples are visited for participation and darshan of special pujas.

In Sanskrit the word ‘durga’ means ‘undefeatable’ and ‘ashtami’ signifies ‘eight day’. On this day the fierce and powerful form of Goddess Durga incarnated as ‘Goddess Bhadrakali'. The day of Durga Ashtami is celebrated as the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon ‘Mahishasura’. Observing the Durga Ashtami Vrat with full dedication will bestow grace, peace and good fortune.

OYO hits weekend with over 300K bookings; surpasses New Year's bookings

SoftBank-backed travel technology platform, OYO, has revealed that the company received over 310,000 bookings for the last festive weekend (Navratri, Durga Puja and Ashtami). This is the biggest booking for the company so far in 2022, surpassing weekend bookings for peak travel days such as Republic Day, Holi, and Valentine’s Day. In fact, this weekend also overtook overall gross bookings for New Year’s weekend, usually the highest booked weekend for the travel industry.

OYO also observed a 134 per cent jump in weekend vs weekday bookings during the festive weekend in 2022 vs 111 per cent in 2019, indicating that more travellers are stepping out during the weekends. This travel boost can be attributed to the pent up demand for travel and increased vaccination rates.

“Travel optimism is at an all-time high across the country,” said Shreerang Godbole, SVP - product and chief service officer - OYO. “As restrictions are eased and air travel bans lifted, travellers are looking forward to celebrating festivals with their loved ones, heading out on summer vacations and making the most of their long weekends. This surge during the festive weekend is a testament to the travel boom that’s ahead of us in 2022.”

OYO’s booking data between 8-10 April, 2022, reveals that leisure destinations like Srinagar, Manali, Shirdi, Prayagraj, Chandigarh, Gwalior, and Ludhiana saw the highest growth over the last weekend.
