Ayla #2: Entry 2
We made it to the Ashtorn Tree. It felt heavy and light at the same time. Quiet and loud. So loud. Overwhelming. When we first stepped into the forest, I thought the whispers were the pasts and futures of the people around me, amplified by the power that surges all around us. But here they are again. Louder, trying to get our attention, trying to tell their stories. Some people seemed like it took all their restraint not to go straight to the tree and touch it. I don't need to look at the futures to know that this might be a bad idea. Not that I'm not intrigued. But it's not the power I'm interested in. Not the symbols, although they did look fascinating. I didn't even take a closer look at them...because of the whispers. Oh, the whispers. Could this possibly be an equally bad idea as touching the tree? Totally. But I am not here to pass on an opportunity like this. To ignore this future. The whispers have stories to tell. And I am willing to listen.

Books of 2021 - September TBR: Magical Readathon edition
(AKA. Lizzie has gone mad!)
Tumblr media
It's my last month of relative freedom before the last year of my masters begins in October, so I wanted to make the most of my time rather than just doss about on my phone for another month. As such I decided to do the Magical Readathon, hosted by G from Book Roast on Booktube, to make me read. However, because I'm a chronic overachiever, instead of picking out prompts I wanted to do I'm trying to read for all of them. Someone needs to restrain me at this point!
Anyway, here's the books:
The Novice Path Entrance: read a book with a map - Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson
Already a bad start for a readathon... I’m getting back into the mood for high/epic fantasy and I need to finish my rereads of both these books. I’m currently in the mood for Oathbringer, mainly because I’ve been catching up with Shardcast and finishing my Words of Radiance review. However, I REALLY want to reread Rhythm of War now we’re almost a year on from its release, but I need to reread Oathbringer first.
I do want to say I might give myself a pass and say if I’ve read half of Oathbirnger I’m counting it as a success because these books are MASSIVE and I’ve got a few other tomes on this list!
Ashtorn Tree: a book that keeps tempting you (or top of your TBR) - Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
This is where posting your tbr a week into the month gets awkward... I’ve already finished Peter Pan. However, I read this in one of my whims to read a book with Captain Hook in it, usually I veer off into a retelling but it was time to read the origninal book. I’d not read Peter Pan before, and I keep feeling the urge and surpressing it. (Should have kept doing it because the book really hasn’t aged well...!)
The Mist of Solitude: read a standalone - Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray*
Another bad choice... I’ve wanted to read this book for ages, I’d meant to start it earlier this year, and I’m buddy reading it with a friend. I need to read it now and it definitely fits this prompt. I do really love Vanity Fair as a story - both the film and miniseries are FABULOUS - so I’m excited to get into the book...it’s just 900 pages!
Much like Oathbringer I might give myself a pass if I read over half the book and say I’ve completed the prompt!
*I've left my physical copy at my Nan's like a prize idiot so I couldn't include it in the photo...
Ruin of the Skye: read a book featuring ghosts/hauted house, or other supernatural elements - The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
Oops another one I’ve already finished. This is the only ghost story I own that I haven’t read, it’s also short (thank God!) However, I really don’t like ghost stories... It showed in my reading experience.
Obsidian Falls: read a thriller or mystery - Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
This is another genre I don’t read a lot from, I’ll read the occassional mystery through dark academia or Agatha Christie but I can’t even think of a thriller I’ve read recently! However, Jamaica Inn is my book club read for September so I’ve got to read it and the quotes on the book says it’s a classic thriller
Tower of Rumination: read a five star prediction - Malice by John Gwynne
I rarely predict 5 star reads, that last book I remember picking up thinking ‘this will be a 5 star read’ was The Way of Kings, which I read 5 years ago... However, I do have high hopes for this one? Honestly, this is the book I’m most likely to switch out for something else depending on my mood later in the month.
Orilium Academy Arc: a book with a school setting - Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger
I needed a book I know is going to be a quick read at this point, I also really want to revisit the Finishing School series because I read the whole series in about 4 days! I also want to have a small refresher before Carriger’s next book in the Delightfully Deadly series comes out next month, which is a sequel about one of the sidecharacters introduced in this book. It’s also a fun, fast paced, YA adventure about victorian girls at a school for spies - what more could you want?!
I’m tentatively throwing Measure for Measure by Shakespeare onto the pile because it’s left over from last month - but no promises because there’s already A LOT. I also needed to finish Emma at the start of the month, so that added on abotu 200 pages!

Magical Readathon Wrap Up
Tumblr media
The Novice path was treacherous and full of pitfalls but I made it through relatively whole. My overall goal was to read 11 books for the readathon. Two were required to complete the journey and advance to the academy next April. But I wanted to read all seven prompts, which I did, and I read 1 of the 4 character building prompts. Luckily I have until April to read the rest of them. I should mention that these aren't my full reviews for the 8 books I read; those I will be posting in the upcoming days/weeks.
On my personal reading tracker, which I don't think I have ever shared with anyone I keep track of the following information because I am a nerd and like stats to look at at the end of the year. I keep track of: Date Started/Finished, Title, Author Name, Page Count, Hours Listened, Type Consumed (ie. Audio, Physical, E-Book) Author’s Gender Identity (if stated), Author’s Ethnicity (if stated), Author’s Sexual Orientation (if stated), Category 1 (ie. Fiction or Nonfiction), Category 2 (ie. Novel, Novella, Short Story, Poetry, Comic, Manga, Graphic Novel, etc.), Age Groupe (ie. Adult, New Adult, Young Adult, Middle Grade), & Genres
Reading Stats:
Page Count/Hours Listened: 2892 Pages / 74 Hours
Type Consumed: 2 E-Books, 6 Audio Books
Author’s Gender: 4 Male, 5 Female
Author’s Ethnicity: 2 Unknown/Not Disclosed, 4 White, 3 BIPOC Authors
Author’s Sexual Orientation: 2 LGBTQIA+, 5 Unknown/Not Disclosed, 2 Heterosexual/Straight
Category 1: 8 Fiction
Category 2: 1 Graphic Novel, 7 Novels
Age Groupe: 4 Adult, 4 Young Adult
Genres: 5 Fantasy, 1 Dark Urban Fantasy, 1 Horror, 1 Mystery/Thriller
Ratings: 1: 3 Star, 2: 4 Star, 5: 5 Star
The one Character building prompt I read was...
Province: Kerador - Read a book from an ongoing series.
Five Dark Fates ~5 Stars~ by Kendare Blake Book 4 in the Three Dark Crowns series
The Novice Path Prompts  The Novice Path Entrance: read a book with a map.
Pawn of Prophecy  ~5 Stars~ by David Eddings The Belgariad Book 1
Ashtorn Tree: read a book that keeps tempting you (or top of your TBR).
Saga Volume 1  ~4 Stars~ Written by Brian K. Vaughan  Art by Fiona Staples
The Mist of Solitude: read a standalone.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue  ~5 Stars~ By V.E. Schwab
Ruin of the Skye: read a book featuring ghosts, haunted house, or other supernatural elements.
The Valley  ~4 Stars~ by Mike Salt
Obsidian Falls: read a thriller or a mystery book.
The Maidens  ~3.75 Stars~ by Alex Michaelides
Tower of Rumination: read a five-star prediction.
Blood Like Magic  ~5 Stars~ by Liselle Sambury Blood Like Magic Book 1
Orilium Academy Arc: book with a school setting.
The Ravens  ~5 Stars~ by Danielle Paige & Kass Morgan The Ravens Book 1
Throughout the readathon there were questions asked and scenarios put forth testing our characters. Our responses to these would tell which guild our characters would best be suited for. Some people clearly had one guild, some had multiple choices like myself but at the end of the day you are allowed to chose one of the four.
The guilds are:
The Archivists
Tumblr media
The Mind Walkers
Tumblr media
House of the Arcane
Tumblr media
Order of the Crescent
Tumblr media
Like I said I had offers to join two guilds which are The House Of The Arcane and The Mind Walkers. Both these guilds appeal to different aspects of myself, as do the other two but I have taken them off the table for now. I have until the end of March 2022 to decide where I will go. I am leaning towards the House of the Arcane.
Overall I had an amazing time and I highly recommend trying this out next time around if you didn't get the chance this time. This was the first readathon I’ve taken part in and completed. I am very happy about that and also happy to have been pulled out of my 18 month reading slump.
Did you take part in the magical readathon? If so, how did you do? Which guild or guilds did you get letters from?

He inhales sharply. "Sure we don't have time to take care of that?" She checks her timepiece again. She'd figured an extra ten minutes in for contingencies, and if she hurries, she can make it back in three. Her blood thrums through her veins. "It's got to be quick," she decides, and pushes him up against the wall.
Feels Right gets a little epilogue to finish it off ;3

snippet from Oedipus this week:
Jak flinches, eyes flicking nervously across the table. Swallowing sharply, he opens his mouth, and then closes it again. Slowly, he pulls something from his hip pouch and places it on the tabletop. The Seal of Mar that Damas carried. And then another, identical Seal joins it. Sig's eye widens. “Mar… so you did see him.” His prosthetic zooms in on the two objects. Mar's looks like it went through hell. Sig grinds his teeth. “Even if all that is actually true…” He looks at Jak, who still won't make eye contact. With a huff, Sig continues, “If it's true, and Mar is… in the past, how do you know he's safe? You mentioned the Shadow - Samos - but not him. Where was he when y'all left?” He glances between the two. Now neither of them will look at him, Daxter suspiciously silent. Jak's clear nausea has returned, even stronger this time, if his hand on his stomach is any indication. But Sig can't spare any concern for Jak at the moment, all his worry turned to Mar. He growls, “Answer me, dammit! And don't you dare lie to me. How do you know he's okay?!” Jak bolts up, chair scraping loudly as his fists slam on the table. “Because I'm Mar!”

When Torn swaggers up and pins Ashelin to the war table, alarm bells sound in the new Governess' head. She's immediately struck by the heat in Torn's gaze, his skin flushed, ears drooping slightly. He presses his lithe body along hers, all angles wrapping around her curves, and murmurs, "Hey." Ashelin blindly closes out of the hologram she'd been working on. "Are you alright?" "Mmmm…" His crotch grinds down on her leg. A dampness soaks into the fabric of her pants - glancing down, she can see the wet patch across Torn's front. His lips meet her jaw. "I need some help, Ashe." "I can tell," she says. Gripping Torn's face in both hands, she pulls him away from her neck and examines him. Pupils blown out a bit, but not to the extent of a drug; blood in his cheeks, consistent with arousal; ear tips heavy but rigid. "Ashelin, I need you," her boyfriend begs, "c'mon, please…" His belts hit the floor around their feet. "Use me, I'm your slut to be bred and filled -"

⚠️ incest
The feeling burned away under the heat of Damas’ gaze. Jak cocked his hips, smirking at the man over his shoulder. He'd mostly disrobed in the entryway, but the king's gift remained, in part because it was so complicated to remove.
Damas stepped up behind Jak, weathered hands coming up to one of the straps. “Allow me to help with that,” he chuckled softly.

⚠️ incest
Damas turned from where he stood by the bed, eyes sliding up and down Jak's body. “I am glad the chest plate fits so well,” he said, “it truly suits you.”  Jak's fingers skimmed over the bronze plating. The new piece he'd gotten that day for a job well done. A little twinge went through his heart at the memory of receiving it - the warmth in Damas’ voice when he'd mentioned his son, the bitter taste that it left behind.
