#ask me which halloween film is my fave
allfattenedup · 1 year
Note
omg that halloween video was filmed over a (1!) year?! you already put so much work into making high quality videos, but that's some serious dedication! insane! rapid weight gain isn't usually what I go for but holy fuck the quality! do you have any video style inspirations? the lighting is just incredible, so moody/cozy, how long did it take to actually get the shots and then to edit? (the price for your patreon is an insane bargain either way) keep it up, dude!
Can I just say I really like that I get horny asks and art-influence asks? 🤣 Thank you for the questions! My style inspiration comes from cinema - no specific cinematographers that I can single out but the visual style I like is that soft indie film, sense of place type look. Films that have a strong, sometimes overwhelming, colour palette like Drive, La La Land, Enemy, Grand Budapest Hotel, The Fall, they really influence me. Films that use a really strong sense of colour and light to create a feeling. I really like cinema that looks like photography. Gregory Crewdson is one of my favourite photographers, his work is highly cinematic, he creates scenes that make you ask questions and I really like that cyclical influence of cinema on photography and vice versa which is really evident in his work. Annie Leibovitz is another huge fave. And look, let’s be real. I’m not thinking about these giants of the art world when I’m sitting down to plan my kinky little videos. But those are some of the influences that have gone into developing my style over the years.
And as for how long it takes, it varies a lot. Obviously the Halloween video took the longest, I don’t think I’ll ever top one year! 😆 But even the shots themselves took quite a while for that one, for a bunch of reasons. I was using my whole apartment so I was moving the lights and the set up a lot. I was trying to find angles where I looked skinny enough for the ‘before’ shots (not so easy anymore!!) and that took ages. There was make up I had to do for the stretch marks and padding for the end shots. In some shots I was so bloated I could hardly think straight and had to move carefully. There were also a lot of moving parts. I remember doing one shot where it was a slow pull back from the table overhead with the candles burning, water vapour for atmosphere, and as it was pulling back my phone had to come into shot and ring right as it became visible which I needed to trigger while I was doing the shot and keeping it steady… it was very complicated! 😆 So the Halloween video was multiple full days of shooting over the course of a year. But then something like my Fourth of July video was much quicker and easier to do. I just put on a tight flannel and went to town on a pie while moving the camera a few times for some variety in shots.
Editing used to take me much longer but I’m getting better at it now and I can usually get a whole video edited in half a day. Honestly the main thing I’m worried about is that as I’m getting bigger the filming is getting a little harder to do, especially the constant up and down of setting up the shot, getting in frame, checking the shot, etc. But I’ll just have to find a way to make it work because im having way too much fun. Thanks for your questions!

So I usually don’t ask these kinds of questions.
But what are your top 5 favorite movies of all time?
The reason is because there’s over 100 years of films out there to choose from lol. But oh well. Go at it.
oh no i’m really bad at answering these ‘favourite’ questions but i’ll do my best haha.
i think my no.1 fave film is mulholland drive. it’s david lynch weirdness at its finest (and is a standalone piece unlike twin peaks: fire walk with me, which i also think is a masterpiece but also that you need to be familiar with the series to really appreciate it.)
if you haven’t seen mulholland drive i would say absolutely check it out, even if you don’t enjoy it, it’s an important moment in film, taking a dark trip through hollywood and the movie business.
my other picks are probably more horror-centric & fairly predictable/typical 🤣
halloween - such a simple film in concept & execution but it’s so creepy & effective.
alien - i’d pick the original over the sequel since it’s more claustrophobic & the overall atmosphere is much more terrifying.
the exorcist - i honestly think this movie is really scary, i know a lot of people call it over rated. i think what really speaks to me about it is the cosmic battle between good and evil and forces that are so far beyond our control.
lotr: the fellowship of the ring - this to me is actual magic on film. everything on screen is so beautiful, the characters & story are so captivating, but especially understanding the insane effort & creativity that went into making these films. nowadays with everything done on green screen sets & post-production we’ll never see anything painstakingly made on that scale again (see the hobbit, lol.)
(a bunch of others that i cant really rank but im feeling indecisive - jurassic park, the matrix, the blair witch project, pulse (kairo), kill bill, the fifth element, terminator 2, the craft, suspiria, let the right one in, donnie darko, the silence of the lambs, hellraiser, possession, a nightmare on elm street, evil dead 2, scream, the thing, inception, the shining)

I really need this anon to come back and lecture me on why what I said is factually incorrect (it isn't)
back to your earlier reply.. scream is a fave of mine! I also saw it as a kid mdmfld (family movie night). yes he's a dick, a killer, and unwashed but he's also a hottie. so, there's that! that opening scene though, it had me like 😱
I think I know what you mean about older films having a kind of charm? I like the slightly dodgy special effects a lot, although there are times when they're spectacular I guess
pinhead? oh that's amazing. I could never finish hellraiser 😭 but I love the cenobite designs. I don't think you would have been annoying by asking! 🩷
alien is legit terrifying though, I'll give you that. seeing the breakfast table scene just 🤯🤯🤯 I think I was 7 or 8?
🦇 (not the whore of babylon)
i read the bible, there’s no talk about thou shalt not watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 1975, Starring Tim Curry, Directed by Jim Sharman.
mhmmmmm id let billy climb through my window tbqh 🤭 scream is the first ever horror movie i ever watched so it’s very near and dear to my heart 🥹
i just find old horror movies - and old movies in general to be honest - to be so impressive. i’m really interested in practical effects so i’m that person who spends the entire movie on google trying to find out how they made the blood splatter like that or how that monster made a noise. it’s even better when the movie is bad, it increases how endearing it is to me by 110%.
i watched hellraiser on halloween a few years ago WITH MY FATHER. 😭 it was awkward to say the least. and it’s not even like he didn’t know what happens in that movie anyways because it was another one we had on dvd or vhs which he’s watched many times before.
i still haven’t rewatched alien because i remember how scared i was of it as a kid 😭 it’s traumatised me along with the krillitane from dr who and the rat from fantastic mr fox…

9, 11, 41, and 46 for the weird ask game!
This is in reference to this post! Feel free to participate~!
9. which do you prefer, hot coffee or cold coffee?
Cold coffee all the way, I love iced coffee sooooo much. Zing from the caffeine, refresh from the coldness~!
11. favorite extracurricular activity?
I didnt realize "extracurricular" was a school term, I thought it was any activity you did in your free time, lol. But I suppose the word "hobby" covers that pretty well...
In school, I did orchestra for a bit, which I enjoyed! And did some plays. The former would probably be the "fave." Hobby-wise, I enjoy listening to music, so it checks out, lol.
41. how do you take your coffee?
I actually know nothing about coffee, currently, lol. Id love to learn about it properly someday, or at least the terminology (this is something that Ive actually gone out of my way to set up for some time ago, lol).
There was actually a distinct moment I had where I asked a Dunkin Donuts employee what the difference between a caramel iced coffee and a caramel iced latte was, and they straight up told me they didnt know, lol! From what I understand, lattes have more milk and cream...?
Anyways, after that moment, I got regular caramel iced coffees rather than a latte and didnt have an adverse reaction, so the answer to this question would probably be (1) flavored, (2) sweetened, (3) iced, and (secret 4th thing) in ice cream form. As in coffee ice cream. But I do what to try an affogato someday...!
46. favorite holiday film?
Coraline, hands down. Also partly because I cant remember many other holiday movies than Nightmare Before Christmas and I like Coraline more, lol. Halloween is the best holiday, and I have fond childhood memories of watching Coraline in 3D, even if it spooked me a bit back then. Its a really fun movie visually, aesthetically, and plot-wise! Love it, ahhh!!!
Thanks for the questions, ahhh~! Have a wonderful day! <3

Horror movie time! Do you like them? Are you a thriller person or a gore person? Any favorite villain? What horror movie do you think is over hyped? What horror movie do you like the most? How do you feel about jumpscares? Twist endings? If you're not a horror movie fan, just talk to me about your favorite Halloween movies :)
ahhh this ask was made for me 💗
where do i begin?
i love thrillers but i like gorey ones slighly better but it's mostly 80s horror films that include practical effects that i like the most, it's just something about them makes it way better tham in modern horror films. one of my faves i would say is the thing and the evil dead (and pretty much any movie that contains blood). actually i found out a few days ago that they included a bit of stop motion for the evil dead two and that's what made me love that movie even more <3 the only modern body horror movie i liked would be men (i know it wasn't a cup of tea for many ppl) but personally, the effects and the intense build up made it terrifying and good for me. also not sure why but i also tend to love horror that includes religion, like the exorcist and the conjuring movies and hereditary (the devil thing). i'd say the horror film that i love the most would be the chucky movies [ and ofc bride of chucky ;) ] since i also been loving slasher films lately, and those movies also has some paranormal stuff in it (like in bride of chucky when tiff tries to resurrect chucky).
i only like jumpscares if they're not too overused and if they're timed right. in hereditary for example, that one clicking scene got me good and the head against the ceiling scene (that entire movie is a masterpiece itself) i also feel the exact way with twist endings as long as they're relevant to the story and how executed they are.
not sure i can think of which one is overhyped but i've heard the recent halloween movies kinda are which i can see why (the first one is the best imo) i saw halloween ends and i only enjoyed the second half lol but i think those movies are decent. as for my favorite villain, i would go for ginger from ginger snaps and jennifer check, they're both one of my favorite horror icons but that would be a story for another ask :)

since your ask box is empty: do you have any recommendations for stuff to watch, read, listen to, etc during autumn or in october? or just tell me about some of your fave media you haven't had a chance to really talk about here!
Ooh yes!
My favorite autumn record isn't even actually an album; it's one of those weird themed posthumous collections you used to find at like, Borders or something. It's called Ella & Louis for Lovers. My mom got it for me when I was in high school and was starting to get obsessed with Ella Fitzgerald because I'd just been in a really cool Ella Fitzgerald ballet production. Then after falling in love with my wife I got obsessed with how beautiful and transcendental the songs on it are, like they're all about how the weather is stormy and nature is changing and being in love is the same as being one with nature. That's what they all seem like to me anyway haha. Pop music used to be so good, man. Anyhow, I listen to Ella and Louis records a lot, but this particular lucky collection is perfect autumn music.
Other autumn recs: my wife's Durin's Day playlist (for those who celebrate), my favorite Powerwolf album (vampire werewolf clergy metal band with the opera singer and the organ), The October Project (which I feel I have to mention just for the name, but they're an underrated 90s band imo), and this spooky graveyard music video for this Pandora's Box song (and I wish their album was on Spotify because they are an underrated and fascinating 80s girl group.)
One last thing! I saw the Song of the Sea last night for the first time (dreadfully late) and I sobbed so much my abs hurt today. I adored everything about it. Selkies are everything to me, but the film had even more than that going on. It was great. And I didn't even know that it took place around Halloween/Samhain until we started watching it! So if you want a new Halloween tradition, it's a great film and it is thematically important that it takes place during Samhain. I just loved it.

so i need littel help, I wanna have a movie Marathon day at Halloween. And just more to wacht, soooo what is your favorit scary movies? or movies for Halloween season? pretty pleas:3 Thank you, and have a good wahtever time.
i usually just watch whatever the girl puts on. and then 20 minutes in we end up fucking.. so.. i'm not a good person to ask for movie recs
ooc// BILLY IS A LOSER BUT I LOVE THIS QUESTION SO I'M ANSWERING IT. Super long kind of info-dumpy spam of movie recs below the cut! Happy Halloween!
My two favorite halloween/horror movies are Scream (1996) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006). Scream is a classic, I don't have to talk about that one. But Billy and Stu are sexy and I love that the film subverts expectations by giving us 2 killers instead of 1.
TCM (2006) is a prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and you could watch them in either order to be honest. They're both great. I just prefer 2006 because Thomas (Leatherface) wears a half-mask in that one so we get to see his eyes and his glorious hair. Sexy chainsaw man go brr. And naturally I love The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) because I love Bubba and Nubbins. And the door slam scene and the chainsaw swinging scene and the 70s fashion and the grab/hook scene. Ugh. Amazing. That being said, the ableism in the beginning it rough to watch if you're sensitive to it. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) is kind of.. not great. It's watchable, but you'll probably not like any of the main characters and they made Bubba a Michael Myers clone which ruins his character. I'd say you probably won't like this one if you like the other TCM movies. If you like Halloween you might like it though? Watch this one first if you want to like it.. lmao.
I also suggest Hocus Pocus for a halloween movie because it's a classic and I love the witches.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) fucking sucks; don't waste your time unless you're really dedicated to seeing Johnny Depp in a crop top for like 3 minutes.
The original Halloween is also bad in my opinion, I'd recommend the Rob Zombie remake instead.
Saw 1 and 2 are really good but don't watch them if you hate being stressed out or if you don't like gore. A lot of people say those movies are torture porn and I wouldn't necessarily say that for the first two, but there's still a lot of gore in them. Not as much as in the other ones but... you know. Needle Pit. The Mask. Reverse Bear Trap.
The Babadook is really good and scary. It's very psychological. Midsommar is good too but I wouldn't say it's scary? Like, outright? Us (2019) is super freaky, definitely watch that. Jennifer's Body isn't scary (to me), but it's sexy so for sure watch that one. Orphan (2009) is really good and a prequel just came out that is ALSO insanely good and I beg you to watch both. The Orphanage (2007) is freaky and I recommend that too.
Pan's Labyrinth isn't technically a horror movie but it can get creepy as fuck and is really good. The Dark Crystal isn't horror but it can also get creepy so that and The Neverending Story could be good to watch. If you watch those two, throw in Labyrinth (1986) as well. Add in The Last Unicorn too because it has a similar vibe as the rest of them.
Oh! Black Swan is fucking awesome too so watch that! It starts pretty normal and then slowly gets freakier and freakier. Same with Oculus, though people have mixed feelings with that one. The Ward is a movie that scared the ever-living shit out of 14 year old me. I don't know if it still holds up, but you can give it a go.
Train to Busan is pretty okay if you like zombie stuff. Warm Bodies isn't horror but it's also a zombie movie and one of my all-time faves. Fido I don't think is "horror" but I like that one too.
Okay, this is WAY too long so I'm stopping here, but if anyone else wants mun's opinions on horror movies, please ask.

horror asks: 5, 6, 10, 12, 20
Thank you so much for asking! This became long, so I will be putting this under a readmore.
5. list your top five horror films I started thinking about all my favourite horror films and then realized there is no way I will be able to narrow the list down to just 5, so I am going to cheat. I am going to give you 10 films, in two top 5 lists. 5 faves from the 80's and then 5 more recent films that I enjoy. Why? Because I, for some weird reason, almost think of 80's horror films as this... completely separate thing when compared to newer ones, lol. Horror in the 80's was just really extra, I think.
So, with that being said, here are the lists.
TOP 5 / 80's
The Shining (1980) I first saw this when I was 10 years old and was terrified to sleep alone in my tiny attic room for at least a week or so, so for the nostalgia factor alone this film is going to have to be included, lol.
Pet Sematary (1989) Actually faithful to the Stephen King novel unlike the 2019 film which I immensely disliked. Genuinely disturbing in the right kind of way. The novel is also my favourite by Stephen King, however, so that greatly affected my decision to pick out this one.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) This is a classic. Although I remember laughing more than actually being scared when I first saw this all those years ago as a teenager. Still, a perfect typical 80's horror film.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) I hate clowns, but even so this movie doesn't really scare me so much as it does simply entertain me. I have watched it a few times and have in fact been thinking about rewatching it again sometime soon. I don't really even consider this seriously as horror I think? But it is fun, so it gets to be on my list.
Hellraiser (1987) My reasons for this are more to do with nostalgia than with this actually being a great masterpiece. I first watched this when I was 12, later I made my little sister watch it with me, and by now I can't even remember how many times I have actually seen it. I also like the second Hellraiser a lot, actually... but we don't talk about the rest. :/
TOP 5 / MORE RECENT STUFF
The Blair Witch Project (1999) A classic. THE found footage film for me, nothing else can really compare.
Sinister (2012) Horror films involving young children in one way or another usually always creep me the fuck out, enough said. I also remember being genuinely shocked by the ending when I watched this for the first time so... points for that.
Dead Silence (2007) I am terrified of dolls, especially ventriloquist dummies, and this features those. No matter how many times I watch this, it always gives me the creeps... but I know it is not a movie for everyone.
The Descent (2005) Let's go climbing into this unexamined cave, what could possibly go wrong? :D Well, let me tell you: So - many- things.
The Ring (2002) I think this one is maybe quite a cliché choice, but nostalgia factor is to blame for this one again. I used to have this on VHS as a teenager and that VHS was watched often.
There are so many other films I could've included instead of these ones, but I'm going with these 10.
6. what is your favorite genre of horror? Definitely paranormal/supernatural kind of horror. I have never been big on slashers or stuff like that, those have never really done anything for me. Body horror yes, but just... lots of blood and stabbing... no.
10. are there any horror movies/franchises you find overrated? Well, since I don't really like slashers or serial killer films, movie series like Saw and similar just... really aren't my thing. In fact I find them quite boring.
Other than that, I must say that I have seen so many people everywhere praising the 2015 horror film The VVitch but when I watched it I only felt really angry most of the time - and bored for the rest. So 0/10 from me, would not recommend. I guess I was not the target audience.
12. what do you think is the best halloween film? Oh no, I was afraid someone would ask me this. Because now I need to out myself as a fraud who has a) never watched all of the Halloween films and b) doesn't really even care about the ones I've seen. 🙈 I have only seen the first 2... and all I can even remember about them is that the first one almost bored me to death. Sorry! I know I am surely insulting so many people by just having admitted this but... now the truth is out. 😅
edit: Wait, now I started wondering if this question is about the Halloween-film franchise or Halloween-themed films in general? Oh well. I said what I said.
20. are there any ‘bad’ horror movies that hold a special place in your heart? Oh, there are actually so many. 😂 I'm giving you a few that I can immediately think of.
Amityville II: The Possession (1982) is the first one that comes to mind. Me and my sister used to watch this over and over again when we were teenagers, we quoted some of the parts to each other at random all the time and even today if either one of us would say some iconic~ line from this film all of a sudden, the other would immediately know. This movie is very bad. So bad it is good. Kinda? Or maybe it's just us and our fucked up sense of humour.
Tremors (1990), as Wikipedia describes it, "American western-themed monster horror comedy film". It stars Kevin Bacon who is battling huge flesh eating worm monsters, so what's not to love? 🤣
The People Under the Stairs (1991) So bad but so good? Or maybe it's just the nostalgia once again, since this is again one of those films I saw (too) many times as a teenager. This is what Wikipedia has to say: "The plot follows a young boy and two adult robbers who become trapped in a house belonging to a strange couple after breaking in to steal their collection of rare coins."

hi!!! happy almost-wwx-birthday!
📱 show your phone lock screen and/or home screen: I'm a bit boring and I'm nervous about being embarrassed, so they're usually nature images. I had mob mp100 on my bg for a while back when I was like...20. this is both my lock and homescreen now
Tumblr media
🌡 Fave season: GOTTA BE AUTUMN. I like winter because I love the snow and it's very beautiful, and I like how spring is green and growing and flowery, but fall is SO gorgeous where I like and saves us from the terrible heat of summer and I fucking love halloween. breaks my heart that I'm not doing anything for it this year. I don't dress up very often but I like the parties. but my roommate and her bf aren't doing anything and it's a workday so idk....I'll watch a movie or something
🎥 Fave film: ah, I see, the old uno reverse. I actually have a really hard time picking favorite movies since I'm more of a tv/miniseries fan, so here are my top five, which I love for different, very basic reasons
The Handmaiden (screams. so so beautiful so powerful such an incredible love story the pacing the plotting the schemes the cinematography all impeccable)
The Addams Family (halloween special, LOVE the humor and family antics)
Princess Mononoke (oughhhh the themes the music the animation the imagery)
Kung Fu Panda movies (goofy, full of stupid jokes, but the way they handle fatness literally makes me cry and the fight scenes rule)
Lord of the Rings movies (these are THE christmas movies I watch with my family so I have a lot of warm memories associated with them, and they're so pretty!!!)
I forgot all the movies I've ever enjoyed. good thing I made a spreadsheet documenting every piece of media I've ever consumed and rated them all
📻 Fave song currently: well, I don't listen to music much anymore... let's see, the ending song from a podcast I finished the other day was this lovely song called Harmony Hall by a little band called Vampire Weekend
thanks for the ask!!

35 Questions for Fanfiction Writers! ✨: 8, 9, 16 & 32
8. Which character(s) do you find easiest to write?
I've written primarily for the Klaine fandom for a little over a year now ( god has it only been that long?) - and I find it fairly easy to write both Blaine and Kurt. I'll toss Santana, Sam and Elliot in there as well - they are faves of mine. Now do readers like my interpretations of the characters? That only they can tell you. 😉 I've just started to write for the RWRB fandom - so it we will have to see how that goes ( My money is going towards Alex, Henry and Zahra - but only the future will tell)
9. Which character(s) do you find most difficult to write?
In the Glee/Klaine fandom - maybe Rachel? I didn't particularly gel with her canon wise. I guess I feel if you have some emotional connection/understanding of a character it makes it easier to write for them. For RWRB - again, it's too new to say. Maybe the Queen Mary/King James? Shaan might be intimidating to write.
16. Any guilty pleasure trope(s)?
As a reader I have so many - ( I am a reader first, writer second) - I haven't tried writing all of them yet though. I have a great fondness for reading kid fics (I'm actually working on 2 simultaneously now!). AU first meetings are another fave. I love seeing crossovers of my favorite films/TV shows. with my fandoms. Historical fiction, fantasy/scifi , D/s . . lord too many to count! Oh, and give me a good fireman fic any day !
32. Summarize a random fic of yours in 10 words or less.
Used a random number generator for this - because I didn't know which one to choose! Out of my current 26 fics posted, the generator actually chose 1. So my first ever fic: Trick or Treat in 10 words or less: Halloween loving sub, Blaine is surprised by his Dom husband.
Arrgh . . that was hard 😂. I need more words!

so I was doing some research after watching movie 6...
...and apparently it was originally written as a comedy
Tumblr media
Yeah, I was surprised, too
Baron Omatsuri is not my favorite One Piece movie—Film Z has too many of my favorite tropes to be usurped from that position—but I do think it is the most daring. Of all the supplemental material I’ve seen and read, it feels the least...One Piece-ish.
Yes, that includes the noodle commercials.
If you haven’t seen the movie and can stomach a little spookiness, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. Unlike movies like Strong World or Z that have the look and feel of a manga arc, Movie 6 transplants the Straw Hat Pirates into a world that doesn’t feel like a One Piece story, taking risks and exploring themes that would never fit in the manga proper.
In addition to the obvious changes in art and animation style, there are supernatural elements that don’t make sense within the One Piece world. None of the Straw Hats win a fight—Luffy included, although he is heavily implied to have killed the big bad at the end. The moral of the movie, if it can be said to have a moral, is if you lose the people closest to you, the answer is to forget about them and make new friends. The story ends with many questions left unanswered and the main drama between the crew unresolved.
And, if you allow me to get philosophical for a moment, I wish there were more movies like it. As I wrote in my review of Novel A, I don’t go to supplemental material or side stories looking for a repeat of what’s in the manga. Oda has written 1000 chapters of One Piece—why not spice things up a little and try something different for a change?
I know the answer isn’t that simple, and by their very nature not all risks will pan out. There will be people who don’t like this movie because it’s different, both in look and tone. But there’s something to be said about a creator putting their heart and soul into a work and having it show in the final product.
Which brings us back to the original premise. How does a movie go from a light-hearted comedy based on a variety show theme to...this
Tumblr media
Baron Omatsuri was directed by Mamoru Hosoda and came out in 2005. To put that into perspective, the movie was in production when the Luffy vs Usopp fight was first seen in the manga. Manga!Luffy had not yet faced the challenge of an inter-crew disputes when the story was being written and boarded, nor did the creative team have the events of Sabaody and Marineford to see how Luffy would react to the loss of his loved ones. They were working without a full understanding of Luffy’s character, and to a lessor extent the character of the Straw Hat Pirates, and it seems like Oda was much less involved In production than has been in movies since Strong World and beyond.
Likewise, Hosoda had just left a tumultuous situation at Studio Ghibli while working on Howl’s Moving Castle, and if this interview is anything to go by (https://instrangeaeonsblog.wordpress.com/2016/04/24/mamoru-hosoda-on-omatsuri-danshaku-animestyle-interview-part-1/) was going through a lot of personal shit when he was brought on as director. The script he was given was originally written like a variety show—something that was carried over into the various trials seen in the final movie—and meant to be a lighthearted affair after the relatively serious Movie 5 (which I have not seen am thus unable to compare tone).
With that backstory in mind, it’s easy to see how the bickering and backbiting between the Straw Hats early in the movie is a metaphor for Hosoda’s time at Ghibli, which is something he admits to in the interview. Movie 6 feels different than any other One Piece movie because it’s the project of a man who has had to endure the loss of those who he was close with, at least in a professional capacity.
There are moments in Movie 6 where Luffy doesn’t feel like Luffy. More than once a member of the Straw Hats ask him to intervene during arguments, moments Luffy either ignores or doesn’t notice. It’s a version of Water 7 where instead of fighting Usopp, Luffy ignores the underlying differences within his crew, and as a result loses everybody.
The structure of the three trials follows a clear path of deterioration within the crew, the initial goldfish scooping game showing the Straw Hats at their best and inciting the jealousy of the Baron, the ring toss sowing discord among the crew even as they snatch a narrow victory, only for them to be utterly crushed in the third and final challenge as they’re unable help one another survive.
It is somewhat implied that the Breaking of the Fellowship(TM) is magical in nature—that like the One Ring, the Lily Carnation was able to influence the Straw Hat’s thoughts and actions, but this is never stated outright and I prefer the more mundane interpretation: That without strong leadership the Straw Hats fell victim to the manipulative machinations of the Baron, and simply self-destructed as a result.  In the end, it’s up to the interpretation of the viewer.
And speaking of things up to interpretation, I love how the Lily Carnation isn’t explained in the slightest. The plant that initially absorbs the Straw Hats looks more like the stem of a devil fruit than a flower, it for some reason rings like a gong when hit, and somehow is able to turn pieces of itself into facsimile of the Baron’s old crew who can somehow move around despite being plans. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and the element of the unknown works so well in the horror-lite setting.
My personal theory is the island somehow managed to eat a devil fruit which manifests itself as the Lily Carnation (which due to the L/R conflation in Japanese, is pronounced ‘reincarnation’, which I think is a nice touch of foreshadowing that may or may not have been intentional).
(Also, I can’t decide if little chewing animation it makes when it’s eating people or the weird bullseyes it makes when shit gets real are the most terrifying thing in the movie.)
Tumblr media
Hmmm, tasty.
Anyway, this is getting long, so here are some final thoughts:
1) This movie has some low key fantastic outfits. The Straw Hats all look very cool without being over designed like a lot of recent movies. Big hat Robin is of course a fave, and makes me really want to see her in a Carmen Sandiego getup.
2) Screenshots do not do the animation of the movie justice. It’s very fluid and has a lot of excellent expressions/poses, although I admit the 3D is jarring at times. Do not let the art put you off if you haven’t seen it
3) Also, I don’t think there’s any shading? Like at all? The movie does a lot of cool stuff with color instead. For example, the scene where Luffy initially loses to the Baron his skin goes all grey, and I thought it was because he was fighting at night, but it stays grey even in the better lighting of the underground tunnels and stays that way until he finds out the Straw Hats are still alive, where it returns to his normal color
4) There’s an extended Benny Hill-type gag when Luffy first chases after the little mustache pirate that’s perfectly timed to the music, and ends when Luffy just uses his power to grab him. The comedic timing is amazing and it’s probably my favorite funny moment in the movie, of which there are several despite the overall darker tone
5) The extended jungle shot from Nami’s POV? Very cool
6) I love how from the earliest scenes nothing is as it seems. The opening text is Robin reading the map, but the storm that’s seen on screen is the one that sank the Baron’s crew. Likewise the whole fancy city is shown to be fake panels early on, the goldfish catching game is a trap, etc., etc. It does a good job clueing the viewer in early that’s something’s very wrong on the island, even if they don’t realize it at first
7) I don’t think this type of movie would work in modern One Piece without somehow nerfing Luffy. Horror works best when the protagonist is weak and vulnerable, and that fits best with a pre-Gear 2/3 Luffy (same with the rest of the crew, tbh. I was waiting for Nami to use her lightning stick during the games, forgetting it hadn’t been boosted yet).
8) I like how there are four captains on the island representing different levels of loss—the Baron has lost his crew and wants to destroy all others because of it, mustache pirate lost his crew and is willing to put it behind him to make new friends, Luffy has freshly lost his crew and hasn’t decided what path he will go, and coward dad hasn’t lost his crew yet but is at risk if he doesn’t change his cowardly ways
9) I think the reason why Chopper was the first Straw Hat to disappear is he’s the most likely to play the part of peacemaker. He’s also the only crew member needing rescuing at the end of the goldfish scoop game, when Luffy foolishly puts his life at risk trying to save him from drowning, just like he recklessly charges the Baron at the end of the movie. Except that time there was no Sanji to save him, leaving Luffy to get his ass thoroughly kicked
10) This is a very good Halloween movie, and I’m glad I watched it in October

TW: Major angst ahead
A/N So I have opened my requests so if anyone has any requests or questions I'm ready and waiting!
I sat propped up on some pillows on my boyfriends bed scrolling through my instagram and twitter. Nothing unusual really, I had already filmed my video for the week and honestly editing just sounded like too much work for me right now. I had been a YouTuber since 2011 when I was merely a 13 year old kid just posting videos of friends thinking I was hilarious. I had gained quite a large following quickly and was one of the first you tubers to hit 10 million subscribers. I was proud of my fanbase they had grown up with me and I shared my life with them.
This included my boyfriend Harry. We had been together since the first charity match they held back in 2016. i had been there as support for JJ, him and I being friends since we had both gained notoriety on YouTube whilst still being quite young. After the match harry had plucked up courage and asked me on a date, it was awkward at first as I didn’t really know him other than being JJs mate. But here we are almost 5 years on and still going strong. Well that’s what I thought.
After abandoning my phone I decided to check out a few of the boys’ videos. It’s so sweet to see how much each of the boys have grown over the years. I scrolled through few of the comments and for some reason they were saying how it seems that Harry and the girl in the video had so much chemistry. I brushed it off until I saw one commenting how harry never posts about me or mentions me any more, which when I think about it was completely true. At the beginning of our relationship harry couldn’t go a week without posting an instagram about me or a video with me. I looked back on his channel and the last time he has posted me was like a year ago, and on instagram it was halloween, which was nearly 4 months ago.
I wasn’t even mentioned any where at all. How couldn’t I notice this it seems like even the fans had noticed my disappearance from my boyfriends life. i get that we have been together for a while but to just not even address that we were together was a little odd.
I decided to get my mind off of it by posting an instagram story asking fans to ask my questions. After a few minutes the questions came rolling in. The usual popped up like my fave video I’ve ever made and the best holiday that I have ever been on. However, there was an overwhelming amount of questions asking if and when harry and I had broken up. Then came one that really struck me ‘you know he only used you for clout, move on sis’.
I heard the bedroom door open and I shut off my phone plastering a fake smile over my face as my boyfriend walked in. “Hey baby” I smiled as I propped my self on my knees and out stretched my arms for harry to fall into. Instead I got a mumbled “hey” and a glance before he sat at his desk. I slumped back down on the bed and shuffled over so that I was closer to harry. “Is everything alright?” I questioned almost sheepishly “yh, Y/N, I just have to do some work” he said in a frustrated tone, he never called me by name he always used one of our nicknames. i whipped my legs over the side of the bed and started to walk out of his room. “Tea?” I questioned wanting to disappear into his jumper that I was wearing. “You know what Y/N, maybe you should go back to yours” he said not even looking at me. “No tell me what’s wrong, I- I want to help you, I love you” I said in a more stern tone than previously intended.  With that Harry whipped around in his chair with his hand reseting on his temple and his gaze avoiding me at all costs. “I see the comments, and the accusations, and they’ve never bothered me ever cause I love you. I truly do and I just want to know what I’ve done” I rambled as I stood still in my place at the foot of his bed.
It seemed like an eternity until he replied. “I just, I don’t feel like we’re working, you changed and well that’s it” he said with no remorse in his voice. My breath hitched in my throat as I wasn’t expecting that type of reply. We had talked about marriage a family our dream home, our whole lives revolved around the other person. Then the comment from earlier rang in my. “Is that true? Or is it because I’m no longer useful to you? I can’t provide the extra clout or subscribers any more to help you grow? Did you even ever love me?” I bombarded Harry with the questions, my voice cracking at the end and a single tear rolling down my cheek. This time he didn’t respond he just stared at me accusingly. I had been nothing but supportive towards this man and to throw it all away out of the blue? How dare he.
I just nodded my head, silent tears rolling down my face, I grabbed my bag and stuffed it with whatever I could see through my blurred eyes. I grabbed my keys and ripped his key off of the chain. The whole time all he did was stare at me, not a tear in sight. The only sound was my muffled cries every now and then.
I turned to Harry with my hand on the doorknob. “Please just say something, anything and I won’t go” I said my voice completely failing me and my mascara stained tears dripping off of my face. He opened his mouth and for a split second I thought he was going to say something. But after no words left his lips, I just nodded. So this was the end, the end of the happiest time of my life. I opened the door and walked leaving my ex-boyfriend to stare at my figure as I walked away.  making my way through the apartment and to my car the only thing running through my head was the comments and how blind I had been for so long. As soon as I got there I broke down. The ugly cries came and there was nothing I could do to stop them.

🙅🏻‍♀️👻
Omg YES thank you for these, my dear!!!
🙅🏻‍♀️ What is one trope you refuse to ever write?
The bully was secretly queer. Nope no nah no thanks!!!!!!!!!
👻 Have you ever written holiday-themed fics? If yes, which is your fave? If not, what’s one holiday you’d want to write for, and which character(s) would the fic be for?
The closest I’ve ever come to holiday fics are my halloween fest Penelope AU (aka the greatest film of all time everyone needs to watch it) and my snowed-in college AU. But neither one are actual holiday fics, which is WILD considering im such a slut for holiday romcoms. I do definitely want to write a —
IM SORRY IM CUTTING MYSELF OFF AND NOT EDITING THIS BC I NEED IT DOCUMENTED THAT I STRAIGHT UP FORGOT ABOUT YOU AND MY HOMETOWN FOR A MINUTE THERE???? AKA MY PRIDE AND JOY??????????? MY CHiLD?????
Good god i am so disappointed in myself. I have not written enough fics to be forgetting them lmfao
Anyway, yes, i wrote a sad holiday exes fic once lmao, and if i wrote another, i would love to write a cozy, happy, hallmark vibes fic for david & patrick one day!
Thanks for this, friend, i love making a fool of myself on this site.
Ask me about my writing
