So I bought my banana ball python at an expo from breeders that have good reviews in my country.
I asked if he ate dead prey and they said that all their animals are used to eating dead prey. Cause feeding live is illegal in the Netherlands.
At my home he refused to eat anything. I left him alone for a week and tried to feed him the first time, he wouldn’t eat but I thought okay he could still be stressed from the move. Next week I tried again but he was shedding so of course refused. A week later, after he had shed, he still wouldn’t eat so I cut his prey’s skull open so brain fluid leaked out. It didn’t work, he still refused. Then I tried a m.ouse and later again a r.at but this time soaked in tuna juice. Both times he refused. I tried to feed him in his enclosure, out of his enclosure, in a small dark box covered with a towel for a few hours. But the only times he bit the food were defensive strikes when I dangled it too close with the tongs. He found the tuna scented r.at slightly more interesting but still didn’t eat.
At this point he had lost 15g. When I bought him he weighed 113g. I already contacted the breeders after he refused to eat for the second time but they weren’t very helpful and after a few mails they ignored me. And I couldn’t try to feed live because my mum and I are very allergic to any kind of r.odent and get asthma from them.
After all this I was very worried about my baby snake so I went to a reptile vet. He determined that my snake had a few flagellates in his pee with a microscope, so to be sure we got meds for treating that. Unfortunately he hadn’t pooped any time at my home and wouldn’t either at the vets so we could only check his urates.
If I notice any poop at any time I can send it to the lab to be sure.
So now his treatment is done and I noticed that he became even livelier amd more active and stronger each day! Now it’s fingers crossed that he’ll eat on Monday.
Btw the warm side of his enclosure is 32C, the cold side minimum 22C, the humidity is around 60% or higher. The UTH is controlled with a thermostat. I also regularly control the temps with a heat gun and have a thermometer set up on the warm side. It also always has a box with damp moss and of course a large water bowl. It has a warm hide, a cool hide, another hide. There are multiple fake plants, 2 branches and a rock. The enclosure is 78cm long, 56cm wide and 43cm high.
So now my questions are: is this indeed from the flagellates? Or because he still was stressed from the move? Or a combination of both? Or am I doing anything wrong? Does anyone have any tips?

Lilith has a dry patch of scales on her neck and head. I think she rubbed herself against a rock which I have since removed from her enclosure. Her humidity's at about 65% and she's otherwise very healthy. Is there something I should do, or is it best to just let her heal on her own?
She’s acting totally normal and has just as much energy as before, so I’m pretty sure it’s just a superficial issue. But I wanted to ask just to be sure.

Hey Owlet, I'm having a bad cold and was wondering how much hydration is actually required to help the body heal? Should I be chugging water/tea non-stop, or just drink when I'm thirsty?
You should drink when you’re thirsty/feel like it, but chances are that you’re doing to drink more than normal ways.
For one, it’s because if you’re running a slight fever and sweating your body will want to compensate that. It’s also likely that if your nose is clogged and you’re breathing through your mouth, the mucous membranes there will dry out more, too also making you require more water.
And of course it can also help with the other symptoms, either by simpel temperature differences (say, something hot and steaming that can help unclog your nose) or because it contains things like mucilages that actually can help soothe the soreness of your mucous membranes.
So why you don’t technically need to drink that much more, chances are that other factors will make you drink more automatically. Regardless, listen to your body and drink when you feel you need it.

Hello! I hope you're having a nice day/evening. I just wanted to ask, do you have any advice for those wanting to rear their first snakes? I'm hoping to find myself one when I can afford the essentials.
heya! thanks, so far today has been pretty good! as far as advice, I’m not really sure. I haven’t been keeping snakes all that long (almost 4 years) so I’m definitely still learning things. But I think it really depends on what kind of snake you’d like. I do know that no matter what kind of snake you get that all snakes require pretty specific care.
My first snake was a ball python, I’ve had her now for over three years and shes doing great. My husbandry wasn’t the best when I first got her (i had bought a glass tank and it took a lot to keep it humid and warm, its been replaced by a PVC cage now) but I learned a ton from some of the people on here as well as the Ball Python Forum
So I suppose my first bit of advice after deciding what kind of snake you want, is to read as much as you can about that species of snake. Find people on here who have healthy thriving snakes of that species and read their FAQ’s and their care sheets.
And also, idk if anyone else does this but i have a special savings account for snake-emergencies. Things like emergency vet visits, as well as regular supplies and food. The cost of keeping snakes (and other reptiles in my experience) is a lot more than some people (esp. me) expect. I know it might sound strict, but I’ve always held myself to the ideal that if I can’t afford the best care for my pet then I can’t afford that pet. If they aren’t happy healthy and thriving then I shouldn’t have that pet. When I was still in college and unemployed I wanted a snake sooo bad but I knew my income couldn’t provide the best for any animal so I waited until I could provide a good home.
Also, I prefer to get my snakes from smaller private breeders. I did get Gyll from an online herp-mart type place, and nothing against them, and nothing was wrong with Gyll, but it was a bit impersonal. I don’t know her hatchday and she didn’t come with a lot of information (her feeding schedule etc.) I wouldn’t ever buy from a big box pet store like Petsmart. And there are certain ‘popular’ snake breeders (bhb) that don’t properly care for their animals and I would want to avoid. Its just my opinion though. I really like looking for animals on MorphMarket and FaunaClassifieds I think there are a few people on tumblr who breed snakes as well.
I personally like the herp community on here a lot, there are a lot of really nice, super helpful people. @i-m-snek has some of the most helpful guides on here imo. So maybe check those out. Some of my other fav snake bloggers are: @thlpp @cornsnoot @tailsandco @the-long-dog @william-snekspeare @wheremyscalesslither
Good luck, and let me know if you need anything else!
Anyone else is also free to add to this I’m sure I forgot a bunch of basic tips, I haven’t had my coffee yet! <3

Hey what are some good small species of sneks for people who don’t have a ton of room for a pet? Are there any that stay small enough for an enclosure space equivalent to a 20 or 30 gallon tank? I had a ball python as a teenager that I adored, and now that I’m an adult I’m interested in getting a snake again, but I don’t really have the space to give a BP a nice roomy enclosure with lots of furnishings the way I’d like to. Do you have any recommendations or helpful info?
Yes! Yes I do!
There are many snake species that stay on the small side, and don’t require super-specialized setups to keep happy and healthy. Here are some off the top of my head:
Hognose snakes
Adorable little buggers who love to dig. Look at that cute turned-up snoot! Boiz are significantly smoler than gals, so if you want a smol snek, a hognose boi is your man!
Kenyan sand boas
Check these out! Colorful, docile, and won’t you look at that derpy face! Absolutely presh. Love to dig. Shiny! I want ten.
Rosy boas
Another compact boa species. They are ground-dwelling and cute-cute-cute! Docile and derpy. Very good snek.
Cal King Snake
Depending on where you live, it may or may not be legal to keep. I believe in California, where they are native, you can’t keep them as pets without a special permit.
King snakes like to climb, so if you don’t have room for an enclosure with a large footprint, but can have a tall one, you’d make a cal king one very happy snek.
Good luck!

That shark post features a transmisogynist jsyk
this only just got delivered to me, a month late, seems like...
i don’t know who the terf is, and what post this is in relation to, as I share a fair number of shark posts. so... idk -- this blog is 100% about scaly animals, and no transmisogyny is allowed on it, but i don’t have a full list of everyone who’s a shitty person on tumblr, so i will occasionally share a post that has one of those in the thread, but as long as they’re not outing themselves as a shitty person by spewing transphobic shit, i have no way of knowing, short of vetting every post i share against every profile that’s in the thread and that’s just a bit much
terfs have no place on this blog, and if y’all follow me -- pls reexamine your views and stop being shitty to trans ppl. or failing that, go to heck and unfollow me

how do you tell your snails apart?? is there a way to mark your snails so you can tell which one is which??
You’d have to pay very close attention to their shell patterns. While the snails are still growing, you should not mark their shells with anything, but once they’re fully grown you could put a dot of nail polish on top of their shell -- just a little dot, and run room-temp water over it to accelerate drying.
But in the end, it’s your decision to make, on how important is it to tell the snails apart, versus their safety.

It's just that I am German and I think it's kinda offensive to bring the iron cross in connection to nazis. The iron cross is the sign for heroes and every person who got one who was (later) seen to be unfit of character will get it removed (not a single nazi has it anymore). Not to mention that it isnt a former military deco considering that it is still being given out, it's a rather rare occurence too. The nazis had smeared a lot of German symbols and signs, they will not take this one too
I’m a German too. Pewdie isn’t. He hasn’t earned an Iron Cross, and he shouldn’t be wearing one.
Nor is he a Georgian Orthodox Christian, and shouldn’t be wearing that symbol either.
I also don’t like the fact that many of older German military insignia and symbols have been co-opted and tainted by the Nazis, but that is specifically why I take extra offense at people like pdp taking symbols they KNOW will remind their audience of the Nazi symbols, both to troll the Jewish people and to signal support to their right-wing base.
pdp hasn’t shown a shred of cultural understanding or reverence for either the Georgian Orthodox Church nor for the German Iron Cross and the people for whom those symbols have a meaning. He’s a troll and at best ignorant, but his history of off-hand (and not so off-hand) racist remarks makes me think he’s not that ignorant.
I currently live in the States, and here there are many people who wear symbols that are not technically Nazi, but sure look like it unless you look real close. I saw a man on TV, hosting a show about guns, wearing a cap with what looked like the SS Adler on it. I almost spat my drink out. I had to pause it, and look at it really closely, and sure enough, it was not the same, the eagle was holding something other than the swastika in its talons, but unless you inspected it this closely, you wouldn’t know.
As a German, I am very sensitive to seeing examples like these, being used by those people to signal their ideology to each other. And I am fucking tired of that, too. But that doesn’t mean that I’ll pretend like every one of those people is just displaying those symbols because they like the look of them.
Similar to us Germans, Buddhists may also feel the same about the swastika, but I have yet to see anyone defend the use of that symbol outside of religious context, by white people with blond hair and blue eyes.
A propos pdp

I'm wanting to order an A35 from Animal Plastics but the problem is I'm going to be moving but I'm not quite sure when. It could be anywhere from a couple months to a couple years. My question was- do you think that it will be moveable once it's built? Or would it be better to just wait until I'm fully moved, whenever that is. Thanks!
You can move it fully assembled if you have two people who can lift things. It’s not super-heavy, just bulky.
Or you can take it apart and move it in parts.
You’re supposed to caulk inside along the bottom edges and a couple inches upward to waterproof it, but you can cut the caulk with a knife when you take the thing apart if you must.
You can also just not caulk it, if you’ll be using a thick layer of absorbent substrate like coco husk chips and coir, so any pee etc doesn’t leak out.
Then you can easily disassemble it for the move and put it together and caulk it at the final destination.
Remember that Animal Plastics usually has long lead times for the orders, we’ve experienced 8-10 weeks with some of our cages, so factor that into your decision-making process.

How are your noodles doing?
Thank you for asking! They are doing quite well!
We just had a feeding day, and tummies of many of my noodly friends are pleasantly distended :)
Lasso, Coil, Leeloo, Slinky, and Porthos are all enjoying their meals.
Makeba said he wasn’t hungry. We’ll try again in a little while. He’s in excellent body condition, and can afford a skipped meal or two.
Sunny and Rocky were a bit disappointed that it wasn’t their turn to eat yet. They’re not very good at keeping track of time, so it’s understandable.
Here’s a picture I just took for you of Porthos peeking out of his hide right now.

do you know a good quality snake tank that you can get relatively quickly? or do all the good ones have long wait periods like animal plastics?
Not to be a smart-ass, but…
All the good animal enclosures that I know of, such as AP have long lead time. For “right now” nothing beats a Sterilite bin.
Buy some bungee cords to make sure the lid is on tight, melt holes in the lid for ventilation, attach heat mat and thermostat – you’re in business!
You can drill/melt holes in the side walls and use them to attach cross-bars for the snake to climb. Make them out of dowels from the same store – they’re like 1.50 apiece or something?
I’m serious, 100% – this beats any glass tank, hands-down.
